i don’t think people realize how well neil’s demisexuality is written. you can see his emotional connection to andrew change and grow as he learns andrew’s motivations and boundaires long before you can see his attraction to andrew appear.

i think the best example is how neil describes andrew in tkm. he never really thinks about it in detail at all and then all of a sudden “andrew looked as he always had, and neil knew his face as well as he knew every iteration of his own. despite that, something seemed different. maybe it was the sunlight streaming through the window, making andrew’s pale hair shine brighter and his hazel eyes seem almost gold. whatever it was, it was disorienting.”

demisexuality sometimes feels like a switch gets flipped out of nowhere. and andrew flipped neil’s switch because neil trusted him. trust and safety and boundary respect was literally the turn on.

neil just got back from surviving the scariest and most traumatizing experience of his life, being abducted, tortured for hours, almost mutilated and killed. then he had to recover from the damage in a hospital with hostile agents and had to barter for the right to see his family.

but the moment he finally has his foxes he is terrified all over again because there's no andrew in the room. this boy just suffered the damage of a lifetime, got to see his family at last and all he cared about in that moment was andrew being okay

I think calling Neil Josten an “unreliable narrator” in aftg is too nice of a phrase lol.

He’s a “negligent narrator” at best! Bc wdym he just didn’t bother to tell us that the death-threat-countdown-date was also his real b-day??

He left those texts on read for like 45 days & never ONCE thought to let the chat know “hey ya’ll I got a wild guess”—we had to find out when the non-narrator characters did like peasants?
