In a momentous announcement, Atlanta, Georgia, has been declared the host city for the 2024 BLACK GIRLS ROCK!® Awards, marking a significant milestone as the city becomes the new epicenter for the world-renowned celebration. Over the years, BLACK GIRLS ROCK!® has honored the outstanding contributions of trailblazers, entertainers, icons, community activists, pioneers, business moguls, thought leaders, and rising stars.

So, Andre Dickens has lied about the total cost of cop city to the citizens of Atlanta.

Instead of the 30 million originally planned,

Cop City will instead cost tax payers 67 million!

That's more than twice as much as promised!

The majority of Atleans oppose cop city being built so that's tax payer money going to a unsupported cause without any vote.

If you are in Atlanta please attend the second public comment on June 5th. If not from Atlanta make sure this problem is heard about all across the world. With all the misogynic, transphobic, homophobic, and racist laws being pass right now, I fear that this facility will be used to further the fascism present in the U.S.

Not to mention the ecological disaster this will cause

These pictures were taken by drone only three months from each other. The sediment and runoff from this alone far exceeds the national limit and it will only get worse with the chemical runoff from the explosives that will be used.

I know the world's sort of gone to the dogs lately but please please please don't let this go out of the public eye. If the police force can't train then the police force can't enforce these laws. Yesterday, from a Harris campaign event in Atlanta, Georgia, Atlanta reporter Tariro Mzezewa noted that the crowd of 10,000 people “was ecstatic. There was chanting, cheering, singing, and dancing for hours in the lead-up to and throughout the event,” Mzezewa wrote today in Slate. 

Mzezewa reported that rapper Megan Thee Stallion told the audience “I know my ladies in the crowd love their body. And if you want to keep loving your body, you know who to vote for,” before performing her hit “Body.” Georgia Democratic politicians showed up in force: voting rights advocate and former state representative Stacey Abrams, senators Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, state Democratic Party chair Representative  Nikema Williams, and Atlanta mayor Andre Dickens. 

“What you’re seeing is very real,” Mzezewa wrote, and she quoted an attendee who said: “it’s nice to witness history, but getting to be a part of it from the ground up is a whole other level.” Certainly, the grassroots enthusiasm for Harris’s presidential candidacy is palpable. More and more self-identified groups are launching fundraising calls for Harris; yesterday the Latter-day Saints for Harris—Mormons—announced that they, too, are “putting [their] shoulders to the wheel!” Today the executive board of the United Auto Workers also endorsed Harris.

At last night’s event, Vice President Harris noted that Trump has pulled out of the September debate to which he had previously agreed. “Here’s the funny thing about that,” she said. “He won’t debate, but he and his running mate sure seem to have a lot to say about me,” After hitting the campaign’s refrain that marks MAGA Republican behavior as “weird,” she added to applause: “Well, Donald, I do hope you’ll reconsider to meet me on the debate stage because, as the saying goes, if you’ve got something to say, say it to my face.”

Trump did not say it to her face, but today he unloaded spectacularly on three Black female interviewers at a meeting of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) in Chicago.

When ABC News senior congressional correspondent Rachel Scott began the interview by quoting a number of his racist statements about Black Americans and asking why, given that history, Black voters should trust him, he lost it. “I don’t think I’ve ever been asked a question in such a horrible manner,” he began. “You don’t even say ‘Hello, how are you?’ Are you with ABC? Because I think they’re a fake news network, a terrible network.” 

He went on to try to dominate Scott, listing the policies he claimed to have put into place, and to attack the people who organized the event before saying, “I have been the best president for the Black population since Abraham Lincoln. That’s my answer….  And for you to start off a question and answer period…in such a hostile manner, I think it’s a disgrace.”   

As the session began, so it continued, with Trump questioning Harris’s Black identity—while also mispronouncing her name—and warning the attendees that they need “to stop people from invading our country that are…taking Black jobs.” NBC News correspondent Yamiche Alcindor told MSNBC that during the interview, “people were stunned, people were gasping, there were some people who were shouting back at him saying ‘That's a lie!’” Attendees laughed and jeered at Trump throughout the 37-minute session; his handlers made him leave early. 

Scott accurately summed up Trump’s long history of racism, but lately he has been advertising it. In an interview with Fox News Channel personality Laura Ingraham aired last night, Trump said that Harris would be “like a play toy” for world leaders. “They look at her and they say we can’t believe we got so lucky. They’re gonna walk all over her.” “I don’t want to say as to why,” he said to the camera, “but a lot of people understand it.”

It is unlikely that his insults and naked racism will appeal to anyone but his base, making his performance, as Jessica Tarlov put it on the Fox News Channel, “a complete, absolute dumpster fire.” It is possible that Trump has lost the ability to read a room and reassure his audience that he’s a good bet. But it is also possible that Trump cannot bear to see the enthusiasm building behind Harris, not only because of its electoral meaning, but also because it reveals how small his own following is and how much people loathe him.  

Aaron Rupar of Public Notice, who produces wonderful video threads of important events, “put together an 11-minute supercut of Trump angrily self-immolating at the NABJ before his handlers pulled him from the stage.” 

Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo analyzed Trump’s meltdown in Chicago this way: “I think we’re getting the first view of imploding Donald Trump as he realizes that what was his for the taking ten days ago is slipping away and he’s likely to go to prison rather than the White House. He [is] being dominated and humiliated by Harris and he’s losing it.” His post after the interview, in which he boasted “[t]he questions were Rude and Nasty, often in the form of a statement, but we CRUSHED IT!” seemed an attempt to reassert his old pattern of simply declaring things to be true that…aren’t. 

Indeed, one of Trump’s answers to the journalists in Chicago revealed that he cares only about getting elected, rather than governing. It also suggested that his camp is trying to reassure him that his pick of Ohio senator J.D. Vance to be his running mate will not hurt their chances, even as more and more videos of Vance attacking women become public and as he is historically bad in front of television cameras.

Vance has only 18 months of experience in elected office, making him one of the least qualified candidates for vice president in U.S. history. When asked if Vance would be ready “on day one,” to assume the duties of the presidency if necessary, Trump answered a different question altogether, revealing what is uppermost in his mind. “I’ve always had great respect for him…but…historically, the vice president in terms of the election does not have any impact, I mean, virtually no impact. You have two or three days where there’s a lot of commotion…and then that dies down and it’s all about the presidential thing. Virtually never has it mattered…. Historically, the choice of a vice president makes no difference.”   

The Harris campaign responded to Trump’s performance by saying: "The hostility Donald Trump showed on stage today is the same hostility he has shown throughout his life, throughout his term in office, and throughout his campaign for president as he seeks to regain power and inflict his harmful Project 2025 agenda on the American people…. Today's tirade is simply a taste of the chaos and division that has been a hallmark of Trump's MAGA rallies this entire campaign,” while “Vice President Harris offers a vision of opportunity and freedom for all Americans.” 

It urged Trump again to “stop playing games and actually show up to the debate on September 10."

Trump’s petulant fury at the Black journalists today suggests just how dangerous it would be to put him in control of the nation’s law enforcement and military capabilities a second time. We were given a glimpse of how eager he was to turn those capabilities against American citizens in his first term when the Department of Justice today released the report of the department’s inspector general concerning the Trump administration’s response to the Black Lives Matter protests in Washington, D.C., in summer 2020.

The authors of the report emphasized that they were unable to compel the testimony of officials including then–attorney general William Barr, his chief of staff William Levi, FBI deputy director David Bowdich, and FBI Washington Field Office assistant director in charge Timothy Slater. 

But what they were able to put together even without their information was that, although the protests were largely peaceful, Trump was desperate to get 2,000 federal officers into the area around the White House on June 1, 2020, to increase federal control of the city. To the frustration of the people in charge of the agencies, he could not articulate a mission, only that he wanted 2,000 people around him. With only about 90 officers from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, the Bureau of Prisons, and the U.S. Marshals Service on hand early on the morning of June 1, Barr told a conference call with Justice Department leadership that  Trump wanted “max strength” on the streets, and to “dominate the streets.” 

Trump then echoed that language in a call with the nation’s governors, saying, “If you don’t dominate your city and your state, they’re [going to] walk away with you. And we’re doing it in Washington, in D.C., we’re going to do something that people haven’t seen before. But you’re going to have total domination.”

Then, the report says, the administration began to prepare to invoke the Insurrection Act, an 1807 law that authorizes the president to deploy the U.S. military and federalized National Guard troops within the United States to suppress civil disorder, insurrection, or rebellion. At 4:48 that evening, lawyers from the Office of Legal Counsel, who advise the president, received an email that the president was going to address the nation at 6:00 and that a proclamation invoking the Insurrection Act should be “ready for signing” before then.

Shortly after, additional officers from the Bureau of Prisons—without names on their uniforms because they do not usually wear them, if you remember the concern over those nameless uniforms—arrived at the White House. Barr was in charge of clearing the streets, and ultimately, by about 9:00 he felt things were calm enough that he advised Trump against invoking the Insurrection Act. 

But it was evidently a close thing.

It says a lot about what catches folks attention that although they claim to care about substance they ignore or are oblivious to the fact that at the #KamalaHarris rally more than just rappers spoke. Both US Senators- Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock spoke. Congresswoman Nikema Williams, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, and former state Rep. Stacey Abrams also gave remarks. VP Kamala Harris spoke about tackling price gouging, banning assault weapons, passing reproductive rights, making housing more affordable, fighting project 2025, capping prescription drug costs, inflation and more. So now that the twerking has your attention, maybe turn your attention to the substance.

A tire of a Boeing 757 exploded early Tuesday during maintenance at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, killing two Delta employees and injuring a third, according to the company and local officials.

The incident happened at around 5 a.m. on Tuesday when a tire exploded while being removed from a Boeing 757-232, which was parked at Delta’s Technical Operations Maintenance facility.

Specific details about the circumstances of the incident were not immediately known but a statement from Delta Air Lines confirmed that two of its employees were killed. A third was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“The Delta family is heartbroken at the loss of two team members and the injury of another,” the airline said in a brief statement. “We have extended our full support to family members and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”

The statement added: “The Delta family is grateful for the quick action of first responders and medical teams on site. We are now working with local authorities and conducting a full investigation to determine what happened.”

Both the airport and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) declined to comment, referring media inquiries to Delta Air Lines. Flight operations at the airport are not affected.

The plane involved, with tail number N683DA, had arrived in Atlanta after a flight from Las Vegas on Sunday night.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said multiple agencies were at the scene to address the situation. “I offer my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased Delta employees,” he said.

Atlanta City Council votes to support a pause on Five Points Station construction

Thanks to Atlanta City Council for passing a resolution this evening to support the Mayor's call for a pause on the Five Points Station construction while funding issues are examined.

Though it has no legal weight, the resolution (presented by Amir Farokhi and Jason Dozier) is appreciated as a show of solidarity with the voices speaking out with concern about the construction plan, which will close the station to pedestrian traffic for about four years.

Here's the text of the resolution...

WHEREAS, On June 6th, the Atlanta City Council ("City Council") became aware of the provisional findings from the More MARTA Operational Audit; and

WHEREAS, these included $69.9 million in miscalculations and discrepancies in operational costs, as well as issues surrounding bus enhancement, governance, and gaps in institutional knowledge; and

WHEREAS, subsequently Mayor Andre Dickens wrote to MARTA leadership to call for a temporary halt on the construction of the Five Points MARTA Station and

WHEREAS, City Council stands united behind him in this request, and

WHEREAS, while the findings are preliminary, the figures are so substantial as to necessitate the halt until the data is made final and a public dialogue can ensue; and

WHEREAS, because we cannot, in the interest of good governance, move forward with such a major project when the very foundation of the relationship between the City of Atlanta ("City") and its transit agency is fractured.

WHEREAS, further, independent of the audit's preliminary findings, City Council has been vocal in its concerns surrounding the Five Points Station and

WHEREAS, this includes the fact that proposed improvements do not substantially improve the functionality of the station, and

WHEREAS, the planned four-year closure to pedestrian access in the center city is unacceptable; and

WHEREAS, there is a lack of confidence that this will effectively serve us during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and

WHEREAS, and while we appreciate MARTA's emphasis on tangible progress, in this instance we should take the time to get it right rather than moving too swiftly.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA, that the Atlanta City Council stands united with Mayor Dickens in his call for a temporary halt on the Five Points MARTA Station project.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that once the final audit report is received, there should be a public dialogue around the findings and their impact on public trust as well as City Council's ongoing concems around the construction of the Five Points Station

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that these requests are being made with the best interests of Atlanta residents at heart. But also in the interest of restoring trust between MARTA and the City Government. Because the strength of this partnership is vital to Atlanta's futur

You may have read about the shipping containers converted to housing for unsheltered people in Downtown Atlanta. It's called The Melody and it's the product of a City of Atlanta initiative for finding land the city owns and potentially using it for housing.

The effort is supported by an analysis of city properties done by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA).

2018: the City of Atlanta announced this bridge would be transformed into a parklet with protected bike lanes as part of a placemaking project. I served on a steering committee during the design phase, when some beautiful plans were developed.

In 2019: the city accepted a $10,000 grant from @peopleforbikes to build a parklet here, and several public meetings are held to get feedback on initial designs.

2020: the city identifies a designer to work on engineering plans for the parklet, a consulting firm called Arcadis.

2021-2023: I've heard info from insiders saying the project is still alive, and I want that to be true! No public info appears to have been given since a City of Atlanta rep told Urbanize Atlanta in 2021 that the parklet would be complete by the end of that year 🙄

Saddest irony for me: I was blocked from walking on the sidewalk over the bridge by a meet and greet Andre Dickens had while campaigning for mayor. I had to walk in the roadway where cars were moving, and where a parklet should be today. Maybe next year?

Suspects arrested following a riot in downtown Atlanta have been charged with multiple misdemeanors and felonies, including domestic terrorism, according to police.

The Atlanta Police Department (APD) released the names of six suspects who were apprehended during the riot in the city on Saturday evening. Only one of the suspects was from Georgia.

Nadja Geier, 24, from Nashville Tennesee, Madeleine Feola, 22, from Spokane, Washington, Ivan Ferguson, 23, from Nevada, Graham Evatt, 20, from Decatur, Georgia, Francis Carrol, 22, from Kennebunkport, Maine and Emily Murphy, 37, from Grosse Isle, Michigan, were all charged in connection with the riot.

Atlanta police told Newsweek all the suspects face charges for domestic terrorism, second-degree criminal damage, first-degree arson, and interference with government property—all felonies.

They also face various misdemeanor charges.

The rioting drew condemnation from Republicans who branded those involved in the violence as left-wing terrorists.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) shared a Saturday Twitter post showing a video of the riot and added: "The Antifa/ BLM (Black Lives Matter) insurrection has been going on for years now."

Police did not tell Newsweek whether the protests were linked to a particular left-wing organization.

Atlanta police chief Darin Schierbaum said that a protest on Saturday began peacefully but turned violent as a group in the crowd started to smash windows and attack police.

Schierbaum said the incident was quickly brought under control and that no police officers or bystanders were injured. Three businesses had their windows damaged.

He added: "It doesn't take a rocket scientist or an attorney to tell you that breaking windows or setting fires is not protesting, that is terrorism."

After police stopped the riot, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens (D) said: "Atlanta is safe and our police officers have resolved disruptions downtown from earlier in the evening.

"The city of Atlanta and the Atlanta Police Department will continue to protect the right to peaceful protest. We will not tolerate violence or property destruction.

"I want to thank Atlanta's police officers, firefighters, 911 personnel, EMS, our law enforcement partners, and everyone else who keep our city safe."

Demonstrators gathered in Atlanta following the death of Manuel Esteban Paez Teran, 26, a protestor who was killed by Georgia State Troopers, according to Fox 5.

The troopers had been at Intrenchment Creek Park on Wednesday, a planned site for the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center, a location critics have named "Cop City."

On December 14, five people were charged with terrorism charges at the location of the future training center.

Atlanta’s “Stop Cop City” Movement Is Youth-Led Democracy in Action (Nov 2023, The Nation)

In July, the Georgia State University Student Government Association passed a resolution opposing Atlanta’s proposed “Public Safety Training Center”—also known as Cop City—to be constructed on 85-acres of land outside of city limits.

According to Ramirez, the ties between the university and the Atlanta Police Foundation further pushed students to act. “Approximately 20 faculty members and GSUPD personnel were identified as APF donors. Notably, GSU’s non-profit entity, The Georgia State Foundation, was also listed as a donor,” said Ramirez, citing documents obtained under the Georgia Open Records Act. “As an institution that prides itself on high Black student graduation rates and one of the most diverse student bodies in the country,” reads a statement from the GSU Student Coalition Against Policing & Militarism, “GSU’s participation in prison industrial complex expansion raises concerns.”

Mutual Aid and the movement to Stop Cop City  (Oct 2023, Shareable)

On August 29, 2023, Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr filed an indictment against 61 members of the movement to Defend the Atlanta Forest and Stop Cop City. The indictment alleges a vast criminal conspiracy on the part of the activists, weaving them together in a legal scheme so fantastical that one of the accused is cited for being reimbursed for Elmer’s Glue.

It’s a patchwork case with Carr — the announced 2026 Georgia gubernatorial candidate — creating a veritable Charlotte’s Web; scrawling words in the web in a desperate ploy for attention. Unfortunately, it also represents a brazen assault on social justice organizers reminiscent of the FBI’s surveillance and attacks on the Civil Rights and Black Power movements in the 1960s and 70s.

In order to justify the harsh charges, each carrying up to 25 years in prison, Carr attempts to link the protestors together based on their shared commitments to collective welfare and mutual aid. In other words, the State of Georgia is currently arguing that participation in mutual aid projects and practicing solidarity constitutes furthering a criminal conspiracy. If Carr is going to try to make a twisted image of mutual aid tantamount to terrorism, we should all get clear on what mutual aid really is.

How We’ll Know if Stop Cop City Won (Summer 2023, Hammer & Hope)

After the Atlanta City Council coldly rejected 15 hours of public comment against Cop City on June 6, a coalition of electoral groups and abolitionist mainstays announced a referendum campaign to bring the question of Cop City to the ballot citywide. Theoretically, if we are able to collect 58,203 verified signatures from Atlanta residents (representing 15 percent of registered voters), the people of Atlanta will get to decide whether or not the Atlanta Police Foundation can keep its lease for the South River Forest. On August 21, the coalition announced that it had collected 104,000 signatures — for scale, current Mayor Andre Dickens garnered only a little over 50,000 votes in the last election — but would continue the signature drive through September to ensure that the city’s onerous signature verification process does not invalidate so many that the threshold isn’t met. Still, it’s a risky strategy: the city could stall the vote long enough to build the facility. We could make it on the ballot and lose. And if we lose in these ways, what will endure?
