#actually rather pleased with my Bronze Age abstract #Advisor is going to demolish the Other one but that's okay because I at least did something so I got the practice and I can sleep now.#It's kind of funny I was writing the Bronze Age one and I can already feel the struggle of compressing a dissertation's worth #of information into 15 minutes. Like ffs I'm supposed to speedrun oil as an extraction reductant and also talk about Egypt's alum trade?#But this is My Fault. I have done this to myself.#Okay but I'm already bubbling with excitement to talk about Leather Tanning again. Nobody was here when I went on this massive #5 hour long rabbit hole of leather tanning research because... I think I was trying to find out if you could use mushroom collagen #to replicate leather? (The answer is yes.) But it took me down this road of Leather tanning because I was trying to understand the #ion exchange that makes it supple and TLDR there's this massive exploitative industry in the Middle East and Southeast Asia that uses #Cobalt salts because the Co 3+ sits really nicely in the collagen site and you can quickly dye and destroy most of the organics from the #animal itself; but because of that you've also destroyed the texture of the leather. I forget why Al 3+ isn't used. I think it's because it #weathers over time and the leather becomes stiff and hard again. Same with Fe3+. ANYWAY. Try and find thick leather when you #do buy leather because leather IS great and I will die(dye) on this hill. But it's the exploitative textile industry that causes problems.#Honestly I've forgotten 90% of the chemistry but it's so fucking cool and a really interesting peek into an organic affected by inorganics #rather than affecting an inorganic mineral with organics. trying to convince my parents to let me buy a moped. my mom said no its a bad idea for a week but then i showed her a gopro video of a guy reviewing the one i was thinking of after passing 3500 miles with it and now she wants one too. onto dad

#its just a lot more affordable than a car. saves money on gas. everywhere i go is usually within 10-20 minutes anyway. if i need to go to #the doctor downtown once every three months ill just pay $40 for an uber instead of $500 a month plus insurance for a car.#instead of $90 a month. thats just a no brainer. and i have the luxury of choosing to not have to go out in bad weather.#and if i did. again. itd still be cheaper to uber several more times a month back and forth than to buy a car #tldr. come on dad you used to be a biker. let me be a fag metrosexual version of one

unfortunately for everyone involved im hitting the exact right combination of summer melancholy + extreme mental illness spiral + late july/august + insomnia that makes me rewatch shadowhunters. sorry in advance

#it was the only thing that got me thru 2017 i always associate it with the second half of summer specifically..#i started watching it in march but s2b was coming out in july/august so that's why those stuck #im doing so badly. lol #i think everything just kinda came together coupled not leaving my room for anything other than my daily walk for #1.5 months and counting but oh my god. hello #im spiraling into shit i havent had to deal with in like years can i LEAVE. So close to relief

Just gotta not melt tomorrow (technically today)

#I can deal with upper 80s/low 90s #Not my ideal outside temps but I can cope pretty comfortably #But seeing as the thermometer said it got up to 94 degrees in my apartment today & the weather apps claim it got up to 102/109 outside #I'll be RELISHING a 86 F day #I keep wondering how I rode out these kinds of temps so easily in the Southwest-#- and then I remember we had air conditioning (not GOOD air conditioning- but air conditioning all the same)#I will say though that it's a dry heat so it's nothing compared to more humid regions at lower warm temps #I'd take 102F Portland over 85F Orlando any day
