ok so i promised to elaborate on klaus and kabbalah thing. my judaism hyperfixation is currently at its peak on the sinusoid (currently researching conversion), so buckle up.

and here we approach the secret third option, that he may not even know. season one takes place in ~2009 and klaus is an elderly austrian man. do the math. yeah. if he is ~60, he would be born right after the war. if he is ~70, he would be born a the very beginning of it, right after the anschluss. i think he is no older than 80, which makes him ~10 at the time of anschluss. neither of this options is a safe one, if you are a jewish child (the first one is not exactly unsafe, but a looot of people who survived and stayed in europe, never stopped hiding their identity out of fear, even from their children).

Introduction

Akumu Soukoku is the younger brother of Lovesick’s second member, Max Soukoku and is not known for being anything else besides that. However, unbeknownst to anyone aside from a select few people, Akumu is actually a trainee assassin for The Commission under the mentorship of his brother, Max, having finally earned the right to be with his brother after years of unrelenting and ruthless training.

Akumu is a young preadolescent boy of short stature and a skinny, almost malnourished figure. He has very pale skin from lack of sunlight with noticeable scars on his left eye and right cheek as well as a beauty mark under his right eye, to put it simply, he looks like a younger version of his older brother, Max, with the same messy mop of dark brown hair that ends at the base of his neck and a pair of emerald green eyes that have no signs of life in them.

Not only does Akumu look similar to Max, he also dresses like him as well with a few minor changes. He wears a long sleeve burgundy red shirt with a fur lined, black hoodie over it and gray ripped jeans, on his feet he wears a pair of black combat boots which he hides his daggers in and for accessories, he wears a pair of red stud earrings, a silver necklace with a crow pendant attached on it and finally, a silver ring with roses engraved into it with a ruby center.

Personality

It doesn’t take a genius to know that Akumu takes heavily after his older brother, Max, especially if you were to put the two together. He has the same silent and introverted disposition as him, only answering when it’s directed solely to him or when he’s with people he is comfortable with, another thing that he shares with the brunette is that he’s quite reclusive and borderline antisocial as a result of being kept away from the rest of society, it’s even worse given his young age but one should never take his silence for shyness or they’ll see just exactly why it’s a bad idea to try and mess with him. He’s currently on the road to try and integrate better into society with the help of Max, Ren, and Kaiji all of which he is extremely close to and sees the Kobe Division team as family, therefore he really tries to make them proud with his progress.

Mentioned before, when he’s around people he’s comfortable with and knows he can trusts, Akumu is a bit more expressive, he’s more willing to talk and there are rare times where he even acts his age and not like the unfeeling killer in the making like he’s supposed to be. That being said, he’s is fiercely protective of his loved ones and will not even think to hesitate to attack, maim, or even kill those that pose as a threat to them or if he feels like it ensures their safety. This stems from a deep rooted fear of being alone again or worse, being back in the clutches of the Commission who have done irreparable damage to Akumu’s body and psyche in their pursuit of recruiting him to their organization.

What sets Akumu apart from other children is age is obviously his ability to take a life without issue or even feeling any remorse, in fact, it’s very disturbing how much killing comes easily to him, as if he was almost made from it even without the Commission’s influence which is why they have such an interest and investment in the boy as Akumu is quickly climbing the ranks and has become something of a rising star in the organization, especially under Max’s tutelage, to the point where there is even rumors of him becoming a fourth proxy of the Commission’s leader. What’s more is that Akumu is quite fearless for his age, not much fazes him and things that do, he refuses to show it, opting for a more defiant and fighting attitude in the face of danger and even death, it’s unknown where this came from but it seems to be one of the few traits that’s been instilled in Akumu even before coming into contact with the Commission.

Trivia

Akumu has a pet wolf cub named Iris, originally given to Max as birthday present, he gifted the cub to Akumu after seeing how well they got along together and is now his emotional support animal.

Akumu has a fear of lightening and electricity as result from the “training” he went through.

Akumu is extremely stealthy and can sneak up on anyone without a problem, not even the most observant person can even tell where or when he’s coming until it’s too late.

Akumu has a much darker and feral side to him, which some of the Commission members have dubbed it as a kind of “Berserker Mode” where he goes into a state of extreme bloodlust and only a select few people (which includes Max) are able to calm him down.

Akumu suffers from frequent nightterrors, to the point where he needs to be sedated by sleeping pills if things are bad enough, Akumu can never recall most of them except for one, a woman covered in blood laying dead in front of him.

Akumu has a severely high pain tolerance, while he can still feel pain unlike his brother, it usually doesn’t resister until someone points it out or much later.

Akumu suffers from amnesia, unable to remember anything from his past from age 8 and below, any attempts to try and remember usually ends in a splitting headache, his necklace however, is the only thing he has that might have any connection to his past.

Akumu has a fondness for birds, even convincing Max to build a bird house together near the cabin.

Akumu carries his signature weapons, a pair of dual daggers everywhere he goes, usually hidden in his boots and will attack anyone who tries to take them from him.

Who should play Batman in the DCU?

This is a question that I think no one really wants to answer.

After the success of Matt Reeves The Batman, Michael Keatons return to the role, Kevin Conroy's Death, and Ben Affleck leaving it, I think it is safe to say people have had enough Batman, and enough good takes of the character.

Even so, Andy Muschetti is currently set to direct The DCU's Brave and the Bold, which will show a new Batman, now older and with his son, Damian Wayne.

Recently a popular fancast surfaced of John Krasinski for the role, to some fans love and some fans dismay.

Personally, I don't think he was suited for Reed or for Bruce. I can see him more as a Green Lantern. But this did get my wheels turning, hopefully to do better. And I got some picks. But first, we need to answer a few questions.

What live action versions are we pulling from?

We want to pull key elements from different versions, but there are so many iterations Jesus.

I am not going to go into all of them, I'll stick with 3. But know that I am a fan of most iterations of The Batman.

Ben Affleck

Love him or hate him, Ben Affleck's Batman was memorable. Personally he has a lot of things I want to incorporate into our DCU Batman. For one, he is our older Batman. Our actor should be similar aged to Ben.

He is also a complete unit. After being Batman for so long, he has had to make himself more of a unit in order to properly take out foes.

This is also the best voice, suit, and fighting style I've seen for a live action Batman. The voice modulator works wonders.

I think Ben had a presence that made it clear he was a leader of the team, if not Thee leader. I want our Bruce to feel the same.

Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson is a little weirdo. And I mean that in the best way.

This was the first time I think it was properly shown how uncomfortable it might be to be around such a presence as Batman. He is fear personified, and working with someone like that can and should be awkward.

Pattinson also took being Batman way too seriously, our Bruce should do the same. Batman's a religion to Bruce.

We need someone who can be a middle ground between these two as Batman.

Christian Bale

While those two perfected Batman, no one has done Bruce Wayne better than Bale.

Bale by far did the act of Bruce Wayne most convincingly. It is one of my favorite aspects of his films. We need someone who can pull off charming douchebag when needed, but slip back into dark loner.

Bale was also funny in a way Batman hasn't been in awhile. We need someone when comfortable be able to joke with Clark.

You can see why casting a Batman can be extremely difficult. Balancing all these characteristics are crucial to making it work.

What ethnicity is Bruce Wayne?

All iterations of Batman have been white.

Now, is there value in making him another ethnicity? Maybe. Making him a person of color could be part of why he doesn't trust the police and takes matters into his own hands. Perhaps maybe his parents being new money is why they are killed. Who is to say?

For now, I will say Batman can be any ethnicity.

Other Stipulations

The DCU Batman is confirmed to have a son, Damian Wayne. Assuming he has already raised Dick Grayson, Tim Drake and Jason Todd is already dead, this Batman has to be in their 50s. We're looking for an older actor.

George Clooney, Val Kilmer, Michael Keaton, Christian Bale, Robert Pattinson and Ben Affleck have all taken up the role, meaning we need a name. Someone who immediately you know, whether you like it or not. But we also need someone surprising.

We need someone who we can see doing this for awhile. At least 5-8 years. The DCU is just starting, so someone with longevity is a must.

He should probably be tall.

Finally, as always, someone not known for past superhero roles. Let's begin.

3. Jamie Dornan

Jamie Dornan may be the safest and most controversial choice for The Batman.

Like Pattinson before him, Dornan is known for playing the love interest in some pretty bad movies, but since has made a career for himself full of wins. Projects like Belfast, Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar and the Tourist proves Dornan has the acting chops for it.

He is a little younger than we would like, but he can play older, and looks a lot like a classic Bruce Wayne.

I have two main concerns for Dornan. One, would he be better off as a villain? In the DCU, he may make a fantastic Gotham City villain like Harvey Dent. But in the MCU, does he have the making of a fantastic Doctor Doom? I think so.

Finally, the character he plays in Fifty Shades of Grey is BASED on Edward Cullen, who was played by Robert Pattinson, our current Batman. The comparisons will be built in from the beginning, and we something fresh.

I think Dornan can kill it, but there's too much against him for him to be my main pick.

2. Bradley Cooper

Now I know what you're thinking, he's Rocket Raccoon!

Yes he is, but the Guardians movies are now finished. And unlike his teammates, Cooper doesn't really show his face when playing the character. In a way, he is oddly detached from Marvel.

He has also worked with James Gunn before, is currently producing Joker: Folie a Deux, and has an incredible career to back up him as a pick.

From American Sniper to Nightmare Alley to A Star is Born, Cooper consistently delivers. He can do suave, he can do loner, he can do troubled, and he can do comedy. I think he could be a spiritual successor to someone like Ben Affleck, and lead the Justice League in a way that feels natural.

He'd also be useful behind the camera, as he was the director of A Star is Born.

My biggest concern with Cooper is whether he would want to do it. One of the benefits of playing a raccoon is you get to work from a booth for maybe a few hours and you're done. This would be a commitment.

There also comes the question of whether Cooper is bigger than the role. We want people to be lost in the story, so finding an actor who convincingly be Batman is crucial. Cooper might be just a little too big for this.

Of my three, I think Cooper is the most likely to land the role, and that may be for the best.

1. Alexander Skarsgård

If we're looking for a surprising pick, with range, physicality, a name that is big but not bigger than the role, I give you: Alexander Skarsgård.

Known for roles in The Stand, Succession, The Northman and Infinity Pool, Skarsgård is one of those actors who is often forgotten but people are excited to see when he pops up.

He is a dramatic actor who can do funny, scary, and anything in between. He's played fantasy characters in The Stand, a billionaire asshole in Succession, and a warrior in The Northman, all praised. He has all the making of a great Batman.

He is classically handsome, and at 6'3, 46 years old, he is just in the age range we're looking for, and towers over most heroes.

He doesn't feel like any other Batman before him either, which will help us stay away from those comparison conversations.

I don't think there really is a perfect answer as to who should be the next Batman. But of all my options, Skarsgård makes the most sense. I could see him and David Corenswet leading the league for years to come.

hi. this is my little update because i really wanted to talk about things, but i no longer feel safe doing so currently, i may in the future, or i might look at stuff and comment on them individually. i will explain why. i will not accept being silenced or shut down. i feel i was in a very scary situation and i was threatened when statements around things surrounding my identity were being talked about flippantly and i was speaking to someone i believed was unsafe and capable of lying to me or otherwise harming me, ladder of which they did

when i was speaking to the user edqey, we got along okay, they seemed to tell me information about their experience in the servers (for example stated that someone by the name of vera scened with them, and that they were specifically told a lot that they werent a good friend). i was interested in this because i dont know vera well and if it was a scene without consent i wanted to know about it, same for if it was a scene that caused dissociation. i LITERALLY cannot recall much of what was said because the group dm i was in with edqey and their partner was either deleted or i was removed from it, so i will skip the meat of what all else we spoke about, but while screenshotting things edqey said to forward to pengo and glip, as i said i was having a difficult time speaking for them and would much rather prefer to be in a dm with those two as well (so i wouldnt be brushed off as doing things like fucking "mindlessly defending glip" when talking about glip's art that they drew with their hands, hopefully) and edqey was stating stipulations. glip did not like the stipulation of "you must get therapy" because it was coming from someone who was willing to tell them to kill themself, firstly, and secondly glip didnt see a need for therapy as their last experience(?) with a therapist involved the therapist siding with marl and glip doesnt see a need for it at the moment. they did however say that if edqey's partner wanted to talk without edqey theyd be willing, pengo was still willing to talk to both.

vera showed up in the conversation and noted that edqey was similar to someone they confronted, starting from the homestuck icon and the fact vera remembers everyone who liked homestuck in the servers, and when vera pulled this person AND the conversation that was likely being recalled as a "scene" AND the dissociation comment AND an entire google drive folder of talking to this person COMPLETE with the main topic of discussion being that the person was being a bad friend everything lined up to everything edqey told me, so i asked edqey if they were this person.

the reason i asked this is because knowing this would change how i interacted from then on. i was deeply uncomfortable with what i saw spurring on the discussion and one of the people their behavior affected is still in the community. this, and what they were calling a scene wasnt a scene. scenes are indicated by planning in advance and a /jointest beforehand. these werent present. it was a talk in disassembly. i wanted to ask why they were calling this a scene, genuinely, because i was confused.

i admit i communicated poorly from here, we used tumblr dms from then on, my tumblr dms dont update in real time at all. i need to manually refresh to see what someone sends to me and i tend to type for a long time. it troubles me to go back through our logs, so im going to really quickly state that A. yes it does bother me when someone keeps pushing a racism issue that isnt present. i spoke to insom, actually, directly, he is not black. glip likening ideas around rape to a black man is not racism, 1 because black men can rape people 2 insom isnt black 3 source is that i am black hispanic and everything rina and edqey pushed in this regard made me deeply angry and offended, this and i have been abused by people who shared the same race and ethnicity as me, and the exact issue of "um you cant say a black person did rape" is why i never spoke about things that occurred to me, and is an issue that plagues black communities CONSTANTLY. and B. yes it does bother me when i bring up my experience and how it relates to my feelings and someone makes fun of me for it. especially someone presumably ~10 years older than me who ive been trying to engage sincerely despite literally fucking everything and theyre expressing violent ideation towards me and a lack of empathy. and C. i think it is strange to be defensive over what a minor sees or talks about but then openly claim to not have empathy for said minor and then threaten them

yeah so thats actually why i feel unsafe at the moment. i tried going around talking to others about thus but i cannot shake the feeling that it isnt enough. i dissociated while speaking to edqey in tumblr dms, and this progressed to be bad enough that i literally needed to ask people if i was actually threatened or if i was overreacting. luckily due to the fact i needed to ask this i have the screenshot of the threat and why i havent stated who edqey was or why they made me uncomfortable/concerned/why i wanted to be sure who they were

i may state this information later anyway. i feel it is unfair not to. it is unfair to me that i have to feel quiet because someone doesnt want their 4 year old dirty laundry looked at even though they keep saying "they changed :(" even in the same breath as saying shit like "my girlfriend might turn against me but luckily has a history of not being easily swayed" or whatever the fuck. it is unfair to me that i went through all the shit i went through for a document explaining how the servers fit into the cult label that is based in assumptions not only about the servers but also ME that i cannot work with because a lot of it is not currently applicable due to the fact that scenes are massively rare occurrences and the servers each have a focus on roleplay and collaborative storytelling, and not whatever it was focused on before, which i dont have experience with because i wasnt there, or is about rina, whom i am uncomfortable talking about for personal reasons (i have never spoken to rina, its just that a lot of things around rina make me uncomfortable, and her actions do too)

and i cant even talk about why i cant address any of these things

and this makes me feel like shit because i showed up to address things sincerely and earnestly, as someone who has been accused of being in a cult due to my upbringing around haitian voodoo in the past

i feel like my thoughts, feelings, and emotions, which are normal for anyone else to do, such as get frustrated when a conversation becomes personal or tedious, or dissociate or otherwise act strangely, are scrutinized as if im not worth the same compassion or consideration because im suspected to be in a fucking cult.

Oh, the "West Bank" of the Jordan River, which was where Britain split Britain split the Mandate for Palestine down the middle and decided to give ALL LAND to the EAST of the Jordan River to Arab Muslims (and barred Jews from moving or living there), and reserve the land west of the Jordan River for Jews.

However, Arab Muslims decided 77% of the entire Mandate for Palestine and 100% of rest of the Middle East wasn't enough, so Britain and later the UN decided to allocate more and more land on the "West Bank" of the Jordan River to them too.

Way to use a recent Colonial name for a region to argue that you're the pre-colonial inhabitants.

Anyway, back to scrutinizing these unscrutinized points:

"God promised it to us"; a) good luck arguing this in court. B) then why did he take it away from you for 2000 years?

a) If Jews can't argue that they deserve the land on religious grounds, then Muslims don't get to argue that they deserve it on religious grounds either.

b) "why did he take it away from you for 2,000 years"? I can flip that same question back on you and ask, "If Allah wanted you to politically control Israel, then why haven't Arabs won a single war against Israel since 1948?"

Interesting how the current Arab League of Nations just HAPPENS to reside in Arab Conquests became today's Arab League [of Nations].

b) Yes, because of centuries of violent religious colonial conquest and suppression of ethnic and religious minorities living in Muslim-majority lands--not just Jews, but Kurds, Druze, Maronite Christians, Sikhs, and others.

In your own words, "that's not how international law works, its utmost principle is a prohibition on acquisition of territory by force; I.e. you can't just steal land by conquest and military power anymore!"

c) If you really want to get into it, Arab Muslim lands were conquered and colonized by Ottoman Turks for over 400 years (from around 1517 to 1917), same as the Jews who lived in Ottoman Palestine.

That's how the European Allies gained Middle Eastern territory to begin with--because the ailing Ottoman Turks entered the war, lost, and had to cede territory to the victors.

But then the same Arab Muslims who cried big crocodile tears about Ottoman Turks occupying and oppressing THEM turned around and threw a raging bitch fit over the same European powers who freed them, deciding to spread the wealth and give ethnic and religious minorities living in Muslim-majority lands some independence too.

c) Yeah, nothing says "moral superiority" quite like Muslims militarily conquering the Jewish homeland (while Jews were still living on it in) and reducing Jews to second-class citizens in their own homeland for over a thousand years.

Not to mention the Pact of Umar, which gave non-Muslims literal "separate-but-diminutive" second class status in Muslim-majority lands, with rules like,

Hello, it is I, your friendly neighborhood historian. I am ready to lose followers for this post, but I have two masters degrees in history and one of my focuses has been middle eastern area studies. Furthermore, I’ve been tired of watching the world be reduced to pithy little infographics, and I believe there is no point to my education if I don’t put it to good use. Finally, I am ethnically Asheknazi Jewish. This does not color my opinion in this post — I am in support of either a one or two state solution for Israel and Palestine, depending on the factors determined by the Palestinian Authority, and the Israeli Government does not speak for me. I hate Netanyahu. A lot. With that said, my family was slaughtered at Auschwitz-Birkenau. I have stood in front of that memorial wall at the Holocaust memorial in DC for my great uncle Simon and my great uncle Louis and cried as I lit a candle. Louis was a rabbi, and he preached mitzvot and tolerance. He died anyway. 

There’s a great many things I want to say about what is happening in the Middle East right now, but let’s start with some facts. 

In early May, there were talks of a coalition government that might have put together (among other parties, the Knesset is absolutely gigantic and usually has about 11-13 political parties at once) the Yesh Atid, a center-left party, and the United Arab List, a Palestinian party. For the first time, Palestinians would have been members of the Israeli government in their own right. And what happened, all of the sudden? A war broke out. A war that, amazingly, seemed to shield Benjamin Netanyahu from criminal prosecution, despite the fact that he has been under investigation for corruption for some time now and the only thing that is stopping a real investigation is the fact that he is Prime Minister.

Funny how that happened. 

There’s a second thing people ought to know, and it is about Hamas. I’ve found it really disturbing to see people defending Hamas on a world stage because, whether or not people want to believe it, Hamas is a terrorist organization. I’m sorry, but it is. Those are the facts. I’m not being a right wing extremist or even a Republican or whatever else or want to lob at me here. I’m a liberal historian with some facts. They are a terrorist organization, and they don’t care if their people die. 

Here’s what you need to know: 

There are two governments for the occupied Palestinian territories in the West Bank and Gaza. In April 2021, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas postponed planned elections. He said it was because of a dispute amid Israeli-annexed East Jerusalum. He is 85 years old, and his Fatah Party is losing power to Hamas. Everyone knows that. Palestinians know that. 

Here’s the thing about Hamas: they might be terrorists, but aren’t idiots. They understand that they have a frustrated population filled with people who have been brutalized by their neighbors. And they also understand that Israel has something called the iron dome defense system, which means that if you throw a rocket at it, it probably won’t kill anyone (though there have been people in Israel who died, including Holocaust survivors). Israel will, however, retaliate, and when they do, they will kill Palestinian civilians. On a world stage, this looks horrible. The death toll, because Palestinians don’t have the same defense system, is always skewed. Should the Israeli government do that? No. It’s morally repugnant. It’s wrong. It’s unfair. It’s hurting people without the capability to defend themselves. But is Hamas counting on them to for the propaganda? Yeah. Absolutely. They’re literally willing to kill their other people for it.

You know why this works for Hamas? They know that Israel will respond anyway, despite the moral concerns. And if you’re curious why, you can read some books on the matter (Six Days of War by Michael Oren; The Yom Kippur War by Abraham Rabinovich; Rise and Kill First by Ronen Bergmen; Antisemitism by Deborah Lipstadt; and Israel: A Concise History of a Nation Reborn by Daniel Gordis). The TL;DR, if you aren’t interested in homework, is that Israel believes they have no choice but to defend themselves against what they consider ‘hostile powers.’ And it’s almost entirely to do with the Holocaust. It’s a little David v Goliath. It is, dare I say, complicated.

I’m barely scratching the surface here. 

(We won’t get into this in this post, though if you want to DM me for details, it might be worth knowing that Iran funds Hamas and basically supplies them with all of their weapons, and part of the reason the United States has been so reluctant to engage with this conflict is that Iran is currently in Vienna trying to restore its nuclear deal with western powers. The USA cannot afford to piss off Iran right now, and therefore cannot afford to aggravative Hamas and also needs to rely on Israel to destroy Irani nuclear facilities if the deal goes south. So, you know, there is that).

There are some people who will tell you that criticism of the Israel government is antisemitic. They are almost entirely members of the right wing, evangelical community, and they don’t speak for the Jewish community. The majority of Jewish people and Jewish Americans in particular are criticizing the Israeli government right now. The majority of Jewish people in the diaspora and in Israel support Palestinian rights and are speaking out about it. And actually, when they talk about it, they are putting themselves in great danger to do so. Because it really isn’t safe to be visibly Jewish right now. People may not want to listen to Jews when they speak about antisemitism or may want to believe that antisemitism ‘isn’t real’ because ‘the Holocaust is over’ but that is absolutely untrue. In 2019, antisemitic hate crimes in the United States reached a high we have never seen before. I remember that, because I was living in London, and I was super scared for my family at the time. Since then, that number has increased by nearly 400% in the last ten days. If you don’t believe me, have some articles about it (one, two, three, four, and five, to name a few). 

I live in New York City, where a man was beaten in Time Square while attending a Free Palestine rally and wearing a kippah. I’m sorry, but being visibly Jewish near a pro-Palestine rally? That was enough to have a bunch of people just start beating on him? I made a previous post detailing how there are Jews being attacked all over the world, and there is a very good timeline of recent hate crimes against Jews that you can find right here. These are Jews, by the way, who have nothing to do with Israel or Palestine. They are Americans or Europeans or Canadians who are living their lives. In some cases, they are at pro-Palestine rallies and they are trying to help, but they just look visibly Jewish.  God Forbid we are the wrong ethnicity for your rally, even if we agree.

This is really serious. There are people calling for the death of all Jews. There are people calling for another Holocaust. 

There are 14 million Jews in the world. 14 million. Of 7.6 billion. And you think it isn’t a problem the way people treat us?

Anyway (aside from, you know, compassion), why does this matter? This matters because stuff like this deters Jews who want to be part of the pro-Palestine movement because they are literally scared for their safety. I said this before, and I will say it again: Zionism was, historically speaking, a very unpopular opinion. It was only widespread antisemitic violence (you know, the Holocaust) that made Jews believe there was a necessity for a Jewish state. Honestly, it wasn’t until the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting that I supported it the abstract idea too.

I grew up in New York City, I am a liberal Jew, and I believe in the rights of marginalized and oppressed people to self-determine worldwide. Growing up, I also fit the profile of what many scholars describe as the self hating Jew, because I believed that, in order to justify myself in American liberal society, I had to hate Israel, and I had to be anti-Zionist by default, even if I didn’t always understand what ‘Zionism’ meant in abstract. Well, I am 27 years old now with two masters degrees in history, and here is what Zionism means to me: I hate the Israeli government. They do not speak for me. But I am not anti-Zionist. I believe in the necessity for a Jewish state — a state where all Jews are welcome, regardless of their background, regardless of their nationality. 

There needs to be a place where Jews, an ethnic minority who are unwelcome in nearly every state in the world, have a place where they are free from persecution — a place where they feel protected. And I don’t think there is anything wrong with that place being the place where Jews are ethnically indigenous to. Because believe it or not, whether it is inconvenient, Jews are indigenous to the land of Israel. I’ve addressed this in this post.

With that said, that doesn’t mean you can kick the Palestinian people out. They are also indigenous to that land, which is addressed in the same post, if you don’t trust me. 

What is incredible to me is that Zionism is defined, by the Oxford English Dixtionary, as “A movement [that called originally for] the reestablishment of a Jewish nationhood in Palestine, and [since 1948] the development of the State of Israel.” Whether we agree with this or not, there were early disagreements about the location of a ‘Jewish state,’ and some, like Maurice de Hirsch, believed it ought to be located in South America, for example. Others believed it should be located in Africa. The point is that the original plans for the Jewish state were about safety. The plan changed because Jews wanted to return to their homeland, the largest project of decolonization and indigenous reclamation ever to be undertaken by an indigenous group. Whether you want to hear that or not, it is true. Read a book or two. Then you might know what I mean.

When people say this is a complicated issue, they aren’t being facetious. They aren’t trying to obfuscate the point. They often aren’t even trying to defend the Israeli government, because I certainly am not — I think they are abhorrent. But there is no future in the Middle East if the Israelis and Palestinians don’t form a state that has an equal right of return and recognizes both of their indigenousness, and that will never happen if people can’t stop throwing vitriolic rhetoric around.  Is the Israeli Government bad? Yes. Are Israeli citizens bad? Largely, no. They want to defend their families, and they want to defend their people. This is basically the same as the fact that Palestinian people aren’t bad, though Hamas often is. And for the love of god, stop defending terrorist organizations. Just stop. They kill their own people for their own power and for their own benefit. 

And yes, one more time, the Israeli government is so, so, so wrong. But god, think about your words, and think about how you are enabling Nazis. The rhetoric the left is using is hurting Jews. I am afraid to leave my house. I’m afraid to identify as Jewish on tumblr. I’m afraid for my family, afraid for my friends. People I know are afraid for me. 

It’s 2021. I am not my great uncle. I cried for him, but I shouldn’t have to die like him. 

Words have consequences. Language has consequences. And genuinely, I do not think everyone is a bad person, so think about what you are putting into the world, because you’d be surprised how often you are doing a Nazi a favor or two.

In his spare time, Adler likes to fish. You can find him on the river watching the water ripples underneath the stars.

He doesn't know much about his family as he was placed in foster care at six months old. All he knows is moving from house to house.

While he doesn't quite know how he feels about being a father, Adler wouldn't mind having children. The responsibility scares him slightly, but he wants to provide a safe space for children that he never had.

A true animal lover at heart, Adler has had several pets growing up. While they were never allowed in his household, he would be known to be the 'owner' of wild animals growing up; feeding them concoctions he would create from leftovers in his houses.

Adler has never loved holidays, but New Year's Day has always been his favorite. He finds himself looking forward to the change it provides every year.

Adler was a terrible student. He went to school every day, but regardless of how much he tried, he barely passed every year until he reached high school. That's the first time anyone ever really gave him the chance and he felt he could finally allow himself to pursue a future that was receivable.

THE SUMMARY

Adler grew up in the foster care system - his mother was a teenager when he was born - after none of his biological family would take him. He bounced from house to house, seeing more than thirty by the time he made it to high school. That's when he met the people he calls his parents; both were older at the time with children graduating college and getting married, but they loved Adler like he was their own. It was the first time he'd had any real sense of a family, and he knew he would do anything to make them proud. That's when he moved to Salem after bouncing from town to town his entire life, and after graduating with honors, he moved onto college, getting an associate's degree in veterinary medicine; he'd always loved animals and wanted nothing more than to be able to take care of them. During this time is when he met Selin. The two dated, but Adler has commitment issues and broke it off when he got scared. A year later the two were married in Vegas a year ago, telling no one that they'd done it. After a year of being married, She left, signed divorce papers, and now a year later Adler is in the same town as her - divorced papers unsigned - unknowingly to him.

This seems like a good opportunity to share one of my experiences from last year. For background, I am a dark skinned brown Jew who most people usually mistake for Arab or Muslim even when I wear a kipah. My fiance is white passing and always recognized as Jewish because he always wears a kipah and tzitzit. When we first moved to the city we currently live in, we sought out progressive spaces to help us navigate his transition and find progressive friends in our new home. Someone pointed us to a book club so we decided to go

We got there a bit early to make friends and noticed right away that I was the only brown person in the room, everyone else was white, and people seemed extremely excited to have me there. On another hand, I noticed right away that people treated Fiance differently when they saw the way he was dressed. They asked if he was in the right place, and one person approached him to ‘let him know’ that Zionists weren’t allowed in the book club. He was understandably upset and pulled me aside to tell me he wanted to go home, but I was really upset so I talked to that person myself. I told her that what she said to Fiance was antisemitic, and she said that I ‘of all people’ should understand. I asked her what she meant by ‘of all people’, and she told me that it was ‘dangerous for people of color’ to have ‘Zionists and Israelis’ in their safe space. I said ‘I was born in Israel. Am I not welcome here simply because of where I was born?’ I noticed the change in her demeanor immediately, and she called someone else over because she said she couldn’t bare to talk to me. She told the other person I was being ‘aggressive’ and had ‘admitted’ that I was a Zionist, but all I told her was that I was born in Israel

At that point, things got worse very quickly. She cried and accused me of ‘making false accusations of antisemitism’, said I was ‘intimidating’ her, and that she didn’t feel safe with me in the room. The person she brought over (I don’t know their pronouns) told me I had to leave. I was really angry and did end up shouting. I told them it wasn’t fair that she had ethnically profiled both me and my fiance. I was accused again of being ‘aggressive’, and when I told them I felt like they were being very racist, they called the police so my fiancé and I had to leave

Fiance and I have mostly stuck to Jewish spaces since then. I am used to experiencing that kind of racism, but Fiance has only recently started wearing a kipah and tzitzit after he began his transition so he is having a difficult time adjusting to the higher levels of profiling. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if I hadn’t told them I was Israeli, or if I hadn’t shouted, but the truth is even the accusation of antisemitism put them on defense. I fail to see how pulling my observant Jewish fiance aside and accusing him of being a Zionist before even asking his name is any different from TSA pulling me aside every time I go through security because they assume someone who looks like me could be a terrorist. In my experience, progressive spaces are always very excited to have me there when I am a faceless brown person who still has the potential to bolster their opinions, but when I reveal that I am a Jew born in Israel they are just as racist as everyone else

Johnathan James Bateman was born to Paul and Christine Bateman on November 3, 1982 in the village of Abbotsbury in England. An only child, John was quick and clever, had an affinity for learning when the subject matter suited him and was just as fond of books as he was tumbling about with friends in the outdoors. He had an affinity for dismissing things that didn’t concern him or seemed otherwise unimportant, often ignoring the feelings of friends or family when they conflicted with his ideas on what should be done. If he had been asked, John would have described himself as pragmatic and open, while others would have mostly agreed. He was a trustworthy friend, always good for a laugh and if anyone ever noticed that conflicts always ended in his favor .. it was never mentioned. John had a way about him that left other boys and girls alike competing for his attention - everyone wanted to be someone worthy of having been noticed by the charming, charismatic leader of their sleepy town. Madame Hong, Also known as Hong Yu, is a choreography instructor and a judge at Joy of Youth. Known for her oriental esque dances and her family, being made of aristocrats, she has had her classes at her feet, Ben the townsfolk that live in her town. A cunning mistress, she is smart, agile, and quick on her feet, using her dances to evade enemy attacks. She now teaches in a different world, alongside a certain incubus and someone from her own time. She feels so comfortable at his side, and gets jealous around or hearing about a certain someone.

Nihimni Caesura - Superior, Love Interest

Nihimni is Hong Yu’s boss. However, she wants to have a closer relationship with him. Every woman does, but she doesn’t care about his looks too much. They love his personality— how it almost mirrors hers. Their minds think alike, they share the same thought process, they are known as the mother and father of the dance troupe. Just something about him makes her heart flutter. She’s jealous of other women when they receive more of his attention. But Nihimni is clueless of her affections, dense minded as always on the matter, he believes that she’s just in the same boat with every other woman that has encountered him.

Li Yue - Coworker, Friend

Li Yue just so happened to be one of Hong Yu’s friends during her time I’m the imperial harem. They get along well, and others used to call them the Fire and Ice couple simply because Hong Yu admired red, whilst Li Yue favored blue. They treat each other similarly to how a mother and a daughter would, or how siblings would. They look to each other for advice and often mimic each other, though usually it’s Li Yue doing a lot of the mimicking.

Mu Lingchen - who is this?

Do we really need to discuss this? Madame Hong hated Emperor Lingchen. She would constantly be aware of the fact that he existed, so what she did in turn was that she would purposefully fail to notice his existence by pretending to not know who he was. She doesn’t like to talk to him or about him. Period.

Song Yu - coworker, Good Friend

The enigmatic Song Yu looks to Hong Yu like an older sibling. Yes, he’s older. But that doesn’t mean he can’t look to her for emotional advising. Sure, she has her reasons as to why they keep him around, clinging to her, but that she has yet to reveal. They work well with each other, and she yearns to see him again. Because she was good friends with his best friend, he took her in like family, same on her end, and they fought Song how to open up, safely and confidently. He favors her for that. Her braveness.

Pan’An - confidante, coworker

Ahh, the other one. Pan’An was like a father to her motherly figure. When she would leave, she would always leave Pan’An in charge. She could trust him with the team, and everyone followed his directive under their thumb. Together, they were a singular unit that could trust and open up to each other. She helped him with his low esteem, and he helped her with advising and confidence in her decisions, despite him being impulsive sometimes. They loved each other like king and would die for each other.

Daji - confidante

*insert this song here.* Daji and Hong Yu, albeit their modesty makes her bump at Daji’s head, are viewed as an interesting pair. They may not agree with everything, but they do trust each other. Daji’s twisted curiosity peaks Hong Yu’s interest, putting her at risk for a dominating error that would make her downfall. However, she can’t really blame Daji. She knows that the other mistress in red is sick in the head, and she lets her get away with the things she does. Yet she feels like she should put an end to her crimes, whether she wants to or not.

Shangxiang - Good Friend

They love to compose together. Surprisingly, the guard with a bow has a thing for poetry. Albeit its novice, her, Hong Yu, and sometimes either Song Yu, Pan’An, or both will gather to compose and recite pieces, and offer advice on how to improve. While living in the harem, Shangxiang would act like a bodyguard, alongside her maids, guarding over her home when she would be away with family on holidays. If Hong Yu could trust Shangxiang with her home, she could trust het with her life if need be.
