The past few days have been a blur of exhaustion for Kimura. They are in his hotel room now, the one his clan pays for in the city. It's quite a spacious and luxury one and a practical spot, too—perfect for late-night missions when going home isn’t an option or for bringing back hostesses to fuck without revealing where he actually lives. But this time, the room serves a different purpose. It’s been days since he gave the keycard to Hanako. After killing Watanabe right in front of her, he told her to hide here, knowing she had nowhere else to go. In the meantime he's cleaning his mess, found the right lies for his clan not to find out about the truth, or about her. Kimura visits only at night and staying longer than he should. There’s something strange about the connection between them—they didn't know about each other no less than a few days ago, yet they've seen each other at their most vulnerable. She, broken and weeping for the man who scammed her out of everything, and him, ending a life with his bare hands for her sake. Kimura stands by the window, staring out at the city lights when Hanako speaks. She asks if he’s sad. "I’m not sad, Doll" he replies, though the words feel hollow. Isn’t he? Hanako’s presence stirs memories of his sister—the one he couldn’t save, the way he saved Hanako. He turns to look at her, the dim lighting casting shadows across the suite. The nightclothes she’s wearing—he bought those for her too. She had nothing when she came here. "I just find myself with a lot on my mind since you and I met," he admits, his voice low. He’s never told her about his sister, hasn’t told anyone really, but the memories have been haunting him, especially at night. He takes a long drag on his cigarette, his eyes lingering on her. Maybe it’s Hanako's presence that’s awakening all these thoughts, things he’d rather not confront. But there’s something comforting about her words, as if she can feel his pain. No one’s ever acknowledged his emotions before—it feels strange, unsettling, but also... good. "I just need a drink," he says, trying to shake off the weight of it all. "Or two. Or five. You want one?" Alcohol has always been his way to numb the thoughts, to keep the memories at bay. It’s easier that way, isn’t it? "I see you're wearing the gown I got you. It looks nice."

Augh even Nene acknowledges that Hanakou don't really hang out one on one :c There was a lot of missed potential to explore their relationship more (maybe have Kou realize he hasn't exactly been taking 'responsibility' over Hanako like he promised initially or show their more empathetic side with Hanako reminiscing over the past and Kou trying to grapple the idea of Amane Yugi). I get that Mitsuba and Nene’s whole adventure together was important plot device to show how the two felt about their respective love interests and propel the plot forward but like!!! Sigh can’t AidaIro shed some much needed light on Hanakou post grim reaper arc?

the thing about yosuke’s shittiness around here (up close and personal, the campout) is that the vast majority of it isn’t doing literally anything for his character. i completely think yosuke’s shittiness is important to his character, but it’s by and large reflections of his own insecurities and flaws. he’s insecure about his masculinity and sexuality, he’s lame, he’s selfish, he’s obsessed with the idea of women, his mouth moves faster than his brain, he doesn’t like himself, and he cares way too much about the societal ideal of ‘normal’. but it’s really important that he’s self-aware! he knows when the things he says are shitty, he knows he’s lame, he knows he’s selfish, he knows he’s putting up a front of being carefree and normal. but there’s absolutely no self awareness here, there’s no recognizing he went too far and apologizing the next day, there’s no regret, there’s not even any self-deprecation, and there’s absolutely no compassion or empathy like he has in serious moments. a lot of what he says is just mean for meanness’s sake, in an execution incongruous with previous behaviour. it’s not even funny!

Seeing Akane reacts so strongly seeing Kako being destroyed was already a big shot at my heart but Mirai and Akane protecting each other absolutely annihilated me in the last chapter.

Akane is a character who is really blunt about his opinion and stands his ground, he said right away in his introduction chapter how strongly he hates the clock keepers, and insists on how much he isn't like them.

In this new arc, he is forced to face this part of him he doesn't want to acknowledge since the beginning, he has been forced to do it a lot since the grim reaper arc (and I think it's really starting to get to him but this is for another day)

Aoi Akane, the human forced to be a supernatural who hates his contract and the clock keepers so much he wants nothing to do with them. But what does he do when fighting Tsukasa? He keeps the latter's attention on him so the threat can't get to Mirai.

Akane is mortal and human. The only mortal clock keepers and supernatural, and he still risks his life to protect Mirai. The yorishiro of the clock keepers yes, but mostly Mirai.

He shifts his attention from Tsukasa to her because he knows what she represents for the clock keepers and he waits for the moment to let her free, even if it results in him getting hurt.

Akane is the character of the cast who shows the most how he loves life, he definitely doesn't want to die. We can see it in how he defends himself, his last movement in this fight being one of protection (and fear). Something he has been doing more since coming back a second time from the far shore. Even if he doesn't want to die, he is still at his core a nice person. He is distressed at the idea of death, disappearing for good, no matter who it may concern in the end. Finding a way to protect Mirai (and the yorishiro) goes before his own safety.

And then Mirai gets the blow for him. She knows it means Tsukasa will get the yorishiro. Kako has been the mystery the most alarmed about the yorishiros being destroyed by Hanako. But Mirai, n°1, who knows how dangerous it is for another yorishiro to be destroyed for the land, sacrifices their seat number, herself and what is supposely the most important thing to them, for Akane.

Akane is a proactive character who rarely stops in his actions. Even when Aoi was "dead" he was activaly searching for a way to bring her back and when he learned she was gone he was quick to try to find a way to go where she was. When he stops, it's because he is physically unable to move. But here, even if he is still concsious and has Time's power he doesn't do anything, like he is the one being stopped in time, unable to move on from Mirai's body.

Mirai may be made of gears but it's been clear since the beginning that she has a real attachement to Akane. Wearing the name he gave her like a medal, jumping on him whenever she can, having a personality where she clearly has fun when he is present, and actually being the one noticing him on his first day at school.

And what does it mean after all for a yorishiro to be sacrified to protect something else? That maybe Akane is in the end more important than what the yorishiro represents for the clock keepers.

If this follows the pattern of a lot of mysteries it may mean that Mirai and Kako have strong regrets/resentment towards the story/person behind their yorishiro.

It's kind of beautiful in the end to see Mirai sacrifiying their past and future to focus on the one representing the present.
