@aloraaki3 oh this is the idea behind this piece! Symbolically, Emily and Trellis may be rather opposite on a lot of things, but where they do meet in the middle, is that they both have the capacity to do good — and destruction. It's two people, with potentially world ending powers — the fire and the flood (STORKS MENTIONED 🗣️🗣️🗣️💯💯💯🔥💪💪🔥 WHAT THE FUCK IS A BAD MOVIE 😎😎😎💯💯👏👏). A lil shallow and toon on the nose?? Yeah, but I love it! I love duality, I wish I knew how to depict it with more depth 😭

They're not actually fighting here, just in combat poses! And ngl, the elements were added last minute, you can tell bc I didn't factor that shit into the lighting 😂 too hard for me right now.

For context, this was the og idea, but I found it too difficult right now. I wanted something that can be done within two weeks, not worked over months (I have things to do).

Just for sharing, I always had this hc (blatantly ignoring canon) that they eventually evolved their own fighting styles outside of conventional stonekeeper types, which makes them unpredictable to opponents. That, and they also developed another separate style that incorporates the other person in it, meaning the style can't work without the other etc etc. It's basically their strengths doubled w none of the weakness (no I don't 100% know how fights work but I like the ideas!).

How would Emily fight?

Intimidation and overwhelm.

Thing is, her taking down pretty strong enemies spread out real fast to a lot of people, so opponents aren't gonna enter a fight with her expecting a weak lil girl but someone who is a fast learner and too strong for her skill level. That means there's no point in decepting that she's weak and unskilled, so she relies on an extremely powerful pre-emptive attack that would a.) hopefully end the fight before it even started and b.) intimidate and discourage other opponents from fighting her to begin with. She's very fast and very strong, but has poor defense so she's more prone to dodging and running/flying around the fight area. Name any stonekeeper attack, and she's probably already made a more efficient and powerful form of it. However, a huge disadvantage she has is that she exhausts her magical reserves way faster than an average stonekeeper because of said powerful attacks (her physical stamina is better though). This isn't such a problem if it's a duel between 1-2 people, 3 is pushing it because most fight don't last longer than a few minutes, but prolonged battles strategy-wise like with an army, her chances of winning plummets rapidly with every minute too long.

How would Trellis fight?

Deception and restraint.

Trellis got the opposite rep from Emily — he's been weak for years, so people don't expect that to change any time soon. Turns out, if you got out of your abusive environment and actually trained oneself in a way that doesn't hurt and discovering your own style instead of having an unsuitable one forced unto you helps you grow crazy fast (his stone power attacks are still weak however). That said, he still pretends he's the same guy, deceiving as much as possible like sticking with basic stonekeeper attacks, opting to deflect enemy attacks instead of blocking (it's also because he's hiding abilities he doesn't want opponents to know, and it's healing). He's best at attrition as a result of that restraint. However, he's secretly a support/tank, so he's the one who makes sure Emily lasts longer in a fight and covers her weaknesses when she can't. In turn, her being the more obvious threat in the field allows him to distance as he tries to think up a way to bat the enemy once Emily's pre-emptive attack fails and the fight lasts longer.

Riley is one of the few characters in btvs who is not at all Buffy. He is not a shadow, reflection, or a part making up the whole.

The character he does thematically reflect is Adam (which is literally the only thing about his character that has ever compelled me). And I think seeing how similar he is to Adam made Riley even more desperate to be like Buffy. But the very reason why he could never be a shadow/reflection/a part of Buffy is because he doesn’t want to share and help carry Buffy’s burdens (at least not unless it was on his terms), he just wants to be the hero. He wants to replace Buffy(‘s role).

I will say this, Riley, Adam, and the first slayer were all created unnaturally and are viewed as abominations by both mortals and demons alike but the difference is that the slayers as a whole and as individuals actually learn how to reconcile these two seemingly opposing sides of themselves while Adam never understood humanity and Riley could never understand demons

While I do get why some people would use this as evidence to say that Riley is a part of Buffy, having a similarity to Buffy does not a Buffy archetype make. Because Buffy could never not understand both humanity and inhumanity. She was never given that chance. She desperately fought against this, but we see in season 6 that her demons are as much a part of who she is as is her humanity.

For Buffy it’s about who she is, while for Riley and Adam, it’s about what they are

re: jealous Henry

maybe it was just a bug in my game, but at the start of the quest where Henry and Hans are riding out from the Devil's Den to hunt, when on the road Hans is talking about wenches and there are some dialogue options for Henry's reply but ALL OF THEM WERE GREYED OUT EXCEPT FOR HENRY GRUMBLING ABOUT IT. I seriously thought I'd only be able to select the grumbling since I was romancing Hans, but right before/as I clicked it the other options suddenly became available. like I said, probably a bug (though I never noticed this anywhere else in my game), but hilarious from a meta perspective--like Henry's instinct was to bitch, but then he thought it over and chilled his ass out lol

but anyway, yeah, it's been a while since I played that quest but I remember some distinct hints of jealous Henry there!

Okay so I LOVE that scene so so much. I love that it confirmed for us that Henry was jealous enough of Karolina the first to deliberately botch Hans' attempt at romancing her, and I love that Karolina the second could not be more fake. And you 100% right that this is an incredible moment where we are privy to jealous Henry (that Hans DOES NOT PICK UP ON EVEN A LITTLE BIT).

It amazes me that Hans doesn't catch on to this at all. That boy is so in his own head that this shit just passes right by him.

That bug you encountered is hilarious to me for all the reasons you mentioned (like yeah he sure had to reel himself back in!!!) but tragically I can confirm that that was indeed a bug. Can you imagine if it wasn't tho? I almost would have preferred that!!

Debating removing the various hat-tips to Embers in my fics due to attempting to re-read that story and finding it far less enamoring than when it was the second fic I'd ever read.

So anyways now soliciting potential new names for the Wani (Zuko's ship), Crewman Teruko, and Helmsman Kyo.

Update: Seems people (at least on this blog) associate those characters with my stories, not Embers. And the personalities are different, and they're legit real world names... So I'll likely leave those two alone.

Still tempted to change the Wani's name, though. My current top contender is Wanyi, which was @tuktukpodfics 's adorable change when they were podficcing Salvage, which I shall just quote here:

Wànyī (萬一): One in ten thousand, Perchance. I realize now that MuffinLance got the name Wani for Zuko’s ship from the author Vathara and it means "alligator" in another language. But when I was reading Salvage, I always imagined it was "wànyī," which literally means "one in ten thousand" and is used grammatically to mean "what if" or "just in case." I think a ship called "The Perchance" is perfect for a boy clinging to false hope.

I think that is a lot cooler and more meaningful than "Alligator". <3

Pointing this out because it somehow escaped me that organic Solver matter color is actually dependent on the host it manifests from. It's usually red with yellow eyes/accents if not directly connected to a host, but if it comes from a host it's a different color:

Worker V - white flesh with yellow accents/eyes (I suspect the yellow is from her being Solver-controlled and that her "natural" look would be white on white since white is her set color)

Uzi - dull purple flesh with purple accents/eyes

I do actually think being Solver-controlled changes accent/eye color to yellow. You actually see it happen to Uzi's tail head when she's being controlled.

Though possible error? The eyes on her wings stay purple during this.

Standing at a rainy cold bus stop and thinking about recipe books in the Neath. Battered old things from the Surface that perhaps sat in a cupboard for a good few years until their owners accepted that they couldn't afford the import on those ingredients now, and started crossing them out and replacing them with mushrooms, lichen powders, and the less dubious local meats. Glossy-covered ones titled in looping script, printed on something not quite unlike typical paper, trying to call on the tradition and elegance of a sunlit kitchen and not quite getting all the way there. Books that embrace the Neath entirely, with indexed guides to avoiding toxic ingredient lookalikes and descriptive flavour profiles entirely without comparison to Surface fare. I want to peek inside a PC's cupboards. let me see their recipes.

Seeing you be very normal about small details in the show got me thinking about Pomni, and I was wondering if you've thought about the possibility that Pomni probably hasn't eaten in several days. Like, we know they don't NEED to eat.. but it's probably not healthy for her mentally to skip the process of 'taking care of your body'. Ragatha, for example, says that participating in sleeping despite the fact they don't need to- helps keep them mentally steady. Idk just a thought..

i DO think that like. theres definitely some psychological aspects to a lot of things like eating and sleeping that i feel like tadc characters would be at risk of neglecting... like with something like sleep, i think they can go without it for a LONG time without physical fatigue BUT at the same time like. psychologically sleep is IMPORTANT. i dont know all the science of it but iirc sleep isnt just a physical need but i get the feeling thats not smth that occurs to people in the circus often :[ ragatha seems aware enough of the benefit of the routine of sleeping and how the adventures can be helpful for that to BUT i imagine even she doesnt fully realize that sleep is still pretty important for them, just in a different way

on that note i could definitely see eating being similar!!!! its not something thatll physically harm a person in the circus if they dont eat but also eating is a deeply ingrained aspect of human life, and while i struggle to place a specific problem abstaining from it for too long in the circus couls cause, i COULD imagine it being like. at LEAST psychologically disorienting. especially with jax claiming he feels hungry??? it implies that its similar to the breathing thing that they may not phsyically need to , but their mind still assumes they do....

i DO get curious if they have like. regular meals?? i liek the hc that theres some sort of kitchen in the circus (seeing the weird little couch area was SOOO exciting for me, im super invested in finding out more about the layout of the circus!!!!! i like details like that theyre FUN) so imagine theres SOME way to access food just like how they have bedrooms (though, i get the feeling caine doesnt have a complete idea of what sleep IS but thats a diff thing). but also with them having a feast at the end of the pilot could imply they do, but with that 'reward' not being brought up at ALL in the next three eps (caine has the opportunity to mention it but noticably doesnt, especially in ep 2 where he just full on Leaves after the adventure- it seems more like he just sorta congratulates people on completing adventures and makes sure everyones accounted for and calls it a day) makes me think that communal meals are NOT super common, or at the very least them being coordinated by caine isnt...

all that to say that if shes only been part of the ep 1 feast (i cannot imagine she ate i feel like she was too out of it to do Anything😭) i am unsure if shed have gone out of her way to find a kitchen... if she wanted to know i think shed feel comfortable asking ragatha about it, but i wonder if its even crossed her mind???? and i imagine that would be jarring for her to realize, and also generally psychologically Not The Best for her...

We’ve already seen in through Conrad’s eyes. Not just him asking if the TARDIS thing was real because he doesn’t know, but also with the lights flickering during Ruby’s explanation of the Shreek.

That’s what we’re doing, that exact thing. That’s what she’s going for. No-one knowing what’s real anymore, looking like that, like Conrad’s spread his hallucinations onto the whole public.
