Finished season 2…
#MAN…………….MAN.#Shima speaks#Squid Game#Squid Game season 2#You know what I’m sure the rebellion would have gone GREAT if In-ho. WASN’T THERE#(Also if Dae-ho didn’t freeze up 😭)#Homie got hit with the PTSD at the wrong time 😔#I keep telling myself that In-ho just doesn’t know what it’s like since he’s the Front Man but then I remember!#Shit wait he’s done this before!#I love how much In-ho and Gi-hun compliment each other. AND how they’re also complete opposites#They both won the Squid Game. Watched people die. And were too late to save the ones they loved#And yet!! And yet. There’s still such a huge difference between their character#Bc Gi-hun is STILL compassionate. Still has faith in people. Is still HUMAN#Meanwhile In-ho isn’t#Imagine what a turn of events this season would have been if Gi-hun’s compassion and humanity actually got through to In-ho…man…#In-ho changing bc of Gi-hun’s faith and care for people and deciding you know what yeah. Fuck it. Fuck THIS. I’m over it#And actually helps with the rebellion all the way to the end. Kills his subordinates bc he’s done with this shit#Anyway what a fucking ROLLERCOASTER holy shit.#HYUN-JU MY FUCKING QUEEN. SHE IS EVERYTHING. SLAY BITCH I LOVE YOU#I will be SO upset if she dies#Also slightly off topic from the ending but AGHHH when they were doing the 5 team race and everyone was cheering!!! It was so sweet 😭#They were all on each other’s side at least in that moment#Just seeing everyone yelling and hollering and cheering on all the teams I wanted to CRY#And then they all try to kill each other later on. Smh#Anyway can’t wait for season 3 to tear me asunder :))))

Sanjuno’s Story and Fandom Masterlist
I’m going to pin this list of titles so that people can more easily figure out what they want to vote for each Friday. Anything labelled with Meta, WIP, or Concept can be voted for.
1.    ATTACK ON TITAN
1.1.  Coordinates T by H: Eren’s coordinator abilities allow him to metaphysically bond with other humans, thereby giving everyone in the group the ability to psychically communicate with the rest and also boosting everyone’s healing ability exponentially to be on par with the Titan Shifters. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
2.    BLEACH
2.1. What Happens on Vacation: Crossover with YYH – turns out that Kurosaki Misaki was a senior ferry girl on sabbatical (which translates as living a mortal life unaware of her true nature) and she was late returning to work due to being trapped in Grand Fishers gut. Ichigo and Uryuu are very confused when their “cousin” Kazuma shows up to introduce his new bride to the family. Koenma is just really pissed off by all the paperwork he needs to deal with while cleaning up his father’s mismanaged pet project. Chaptered, WIP - Unposted
3.     CODE GEASS
3.1.  A Code of Ice and Fire: Crossover with GOT – Lelouch, his two younger siblings, and Lelouch’s most loyal followers are reincarnated into Westeros. Lelouch proceeds to make it his lifelong mission to drive Cersei into frothing fits and strengthens the Baratheon dynasty to the point that even Tywin is impressed by his grandson’s machinations. Then CC shows up with dragons and Ned Stark starts to think that maybe Robert’s onto something with the “drinking to forget” idea. Meta
3.2.  Abandon Thyself: Post-Zero Requiem Suzaku travels back in time to the scene in the Shinjuku Ghettos when the truck explodes. Given that the people closest to him haven’t actually spoken to Suzaku in years, the origins of Suzaku’s obvious mental instability is hilariously misattributed by various outside PoVs. So when Suzaku hits his knees in front of Lelouch, swearing eternal devotion and vowing to make Lelouch the next emperor nobody panics. (They should really reconsider panicking.) Drabbles, Prompt Fill - Posted
3.3.  The Sun Also Rises: At the moment of his death in the Zero Requiem, Lelouch travels back in time to his childhood body. With only a week to go before Marianne is “assassinated by terrorists” Lelouch sets out to rearrange the board in a way none of the other players will see coming until it’s far too late. Lelouch has been given a second chance to make things right, and Lelouch wouldn’t be Lelouch if he didn’t plan big. This time around, Lelouch plans for his victory to be a bit more obvious. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
4.    DCU
4.1.  Time Enough: Terry McGinnis, his little brother Matt, and their dogs are the only members of their timeline to survive because Bruce Wayne was too old to see any more of his sons die in front of him. So they all got knocked out, shoved into an escape capsule, and ejected from the Batman Beyond timeline before it crumbles. Said time pod crashes into the middle of a Red Hood versus Match throw down, and Terry’s Wayne-inherited charisma is so powerful it allows him to banter his way into good graces of both villains. Jason drags them all off to his lair because every single member of the Batfam hoards orphans. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
5.    DRAGON BALL
5.1.  Saiyajin Pride: Alien biology has a larger impact on characterization that it does in canon. Mirai comes back to the main timeline live in sin with Videl and Gohan. Vegeta and Goku deal with some shit that comes from being the last full-blooded members of their species. Then just as things are settling down… Garlic is an idiot who thinks up a loophole in the “can’t wish people dead” rule and wishes Goku and Vegeta’s families straight out of existence and they end up in an entirely different reality. The only upside is that Vegeta finally gets to kill Frieza. Chaptered, WIP - Unposted
6.    FAIRY TAIL
6.1.  Flight Of Dragons: Future!Lucy misses her target and ends up landing further back in time, during the same year Natsu and the rest of the Dragon Slayer kids were brought to when they were pulled forward in time.  Fairy Tail luck kicks in, and future!Lucy runs into child!Laxus as he escapes from his father after being fed the Lightning Dragon Lacrima. Laxus is handed a Prophecy and runs with it. Children have never needed Fairy Tales to tell them that Dragons exist, but they certainly help. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
6.2.  My Heart Overflows: Juvia and Grey have finally started dating, but the Fairy Tail Mage Guild has some interesting traditions when it comes to proving the validity of a romantic relationship. Oneshot, Prompt fill - Posted
7.    FAMILIAR OF ZERO
7.1.  A Velvet Glove: Crossover with TMNT – Leonardo gets summoned to be Louise’s Familiar. Since all of his brothers are dead, Leo sees no reason not to make the most of this “lifelong bond of magic and spirit” and adopts Louise as his little sister. Halgenkia is not prepared for a Louise Francois le Blanc de la Valliere with ninja training. Henrietta is probably far too gleeful over making her best friend her Spymaster, but it’s not like anyone knows enough about what they’re doing to stop her. Reconquista gets exposed and smashed, and Wardes really should have respected his fiancée more. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
8.    FINAL FANTASY VII
8.1.  A Dirge of Ice and Fire: Crossover with GOT – Several members of Avalanche and the Elite Soldiers are reincarnated as the spares and bastards of Westeros’ Great Houses. Given that Rhaenys Targaryen used to be Cid Highwind, the Sack of King’s Landing goes very differently. Meta
8.2.  A Feather’s Weight: Crossover with Naruto – Kakashi and Obito, along with their respective subordinates, are reincarnated in Wutai, and are thus in position to undermine a lot of Hojo’s plans simply by being themselves. Wutai still loses, but by a much smaller margin, and SHIN-RA realizes much too late that Wutai’s “concession” was a trap. Kakashi is a big shiny distraction for Sephiroth, the SOLDIERS revolt, and nobody knows who assassinated President Shinra. Chaptered, WIP - Unposted
8.3.  Antiviral: Woden and Gaia conspire to create antibodies to fight off Jenova’s infection. Cid and Vincent end up bearing the brunt of this decision, get roofied by Divine Intervention, and also end up the Gaian equivalent of demonic werewolves. Also the Planet is transforming all the SOLDIERS into werewolves too, yes, even the dead ones. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
8.4.  For Love Of: Cid Highwind crashes the Tiny Bronco into Lucrecia’s cave, does the metaphysical equivalent of tearing her heart out and eating it to absorb her power, and them proceeds to adopt General Sephiroth as his son because it’s not like anyone can stop him. Cid Highwind does what he wants. Sephiroth does what Mother wants. SHIN-RA soon regrets everything because Cid Highwind is a hell of a lot better at rewriting the social order than Avalanche is. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
8.5.  Hindsight is 20-20: CHAOS decides to rewrite time because they have a massive crush on Cid and they don’t want him to die. CHAOS fumbles the landing and Cid ends up in the body of some weird Lucrecia/Ancient-Cetra-Who-Was-Jenova’s-Host Clone and ends up giving birth to Sephiroth. Things only get worse from there. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
8.6.  Like it Rough: Cid likes Vincent a lot and also has a bit of a kink for scars. Cid walks in on Vincent naked, runs away to hide his raging boner, and Vincent ends up chasing Cid around the airship until he can pin his friend down in the Captain’s bunk because the demons are all drunk on the pheromones. Oneshot - Complete
8.7.  Names of Power: Jenova’s taint getting mixed into the Lifestream has far-reaching consequences, and Avalanche gets tapped to handle the fallout whither they like it or not. Series, WIP - Posted
8.7.1.     Small Packages: The Lifestream meddles in Avalanches lives even after the Planet has been saved. There are clones and ancient powers better off left alone but it’s not like Avalanche ever gets a say in the matter. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
8.7.2.     History Inverted: Jenova isn’t all the way gone and the Planet really doesn’t care if Humanity survives or not as long as the infection is burned away. Aerith shoves the spirits of Avalanche and their children into a new timeline because she doesn’t want to watch their souls get shredded. Avalanche proceeds to mosey along and wreak havoc in the way only they can manage. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
8.8.  To Earn the Sky: Echidna, Mother of Monsters and Heroes, and Jenova, the Calamity From the Skies, are at war. Hojo makes a very big mistake when he uses the Blood of Echidna’s Children in his Revenant Project. Cid Highwind is a good son, and his Mother wants to meet her new Grandchildren. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
9.    FINAL FANTASY XV
9.1.  A Light of Ice and Fire: Crossover with FFVX – Noctis, his Retinue, and the loyal members of the Kingsglaive and Crownsguard are reincarnated into Westeros. Jorah Mormont is Cor Leonis, but Cor Leonis is not Jorah Mormont, and so the Northern Forces are something to fear in Robert’s Rebellion. By the time King Robert visits Winterfell, it will be a very different Northern Kingdom that he finds there. Meta
10. GAME OF THRONES
10.1.               Crossover Fixits to Help Westeros be Less Miserably Doomed: Various casts from other series end up reborn in Westeros and use knowledge from their previous lives to change the Game. Series
10.1.1. An Assemblage of Ice and Fire: Crossover with MCU – Team Iron Man focus, since Tony is reincarnated as Ned Stark. Starks are made of Iron, and Winter is coming. Tony’s genius intellect, knowledge of politics and economics, experience with magic and alternate realities, and the fact that Extremis carried over through his reincarnation and adapted to work with First Man magic means that the Stark siblings who go to the Tourney of Harrenhal are nothing like the canon versions. Rhaegar gets his Stark bride, and he proceeds to regret it for the rest of his life. Meta
10.1.2. A Balance of Ice and Fire: Crossover with SW – Qui-Gon Jinn’s three Padawan Learners and Padme (who got taken in Anakin’s place) are reincarnated as the Tyrell siblings. They proceed to follow the Will of the Force and prepare the Seven Kingdoms to win against the Long Night. Meta
10.1.3. A Code of Ice and Fire: Crossover with CG – Lelouch, his two younger siblings, and Lelouch’s most loyal followers are reincarnated into Westeros. Lelouch proceeds to make it his lifelong mission to drive Cersei into frothing fits and strengthens the Baratheon dynasty to the point that even Tywin is impressed by his grandson’s machinations. Then CC shows up with dragons and Ned Stark starts to think that maybe Robert’s onto something with the “drinking to forget” thing. Meta
10.1.4. A Dirge of Ice and Fire: Crossover with FFVII – Several members of Avalanche and the Elite Soldiers are reincarnated as the spares and bastards of Westeros’ Great Houses. Given that Rhaenys Targaryen used to be Cid Highwind, the Sack of King’s Landing goes very differently. Meta
10.1.5. A Dying Will of Ice and Fire: Crossover with KHR – The Tri-Ni-Sette holders and all those bonded to them are reincarnated into Westeros Noble Houses. Xanxus is born as Robert’s eldest trueborn son and Heir to the Iron Throne, and so all it takes is one look at the Wall to know that there is something to fear on the other side. Tsuna is busy swooning over Arya’s muscles but in-between reciting odes to his amazing betrothed he takes time to tell Nono’s ghost “I told you Xanxus would make the better Heir.” Meta
10.1.6. Meta
10.1.7. A Space Between Ice and Fire: Crossover with Naruto WCE – The Konoha Founders and their siblings are reincarnated as Starks and Baratheons and manage to save the Realms of Men while resolving their many and varied issues with one another. Meta
10.1.8. A Transformation of Ice and Fire: Crossover with TFG1 – Most of the Cybertronians who died during Unicron’s Awakening end up reincarnated as dragons (Seekers) and Direwolves (Autobots). The sapience of the animals causes significant changes to outcome of several key canon events. Meta
10.2.              Singing In A Different Key: SI is reborn as Jon Snow, who then precedes to Machiavelli the fuck out of the North in preparation for the coming Long Night and also to screw over the Lannisters. Because fuckthe Lannisters. Meta
10.3.               Wolf At The Door: When Ice takes the head of Eddard Stark, Valeryian magic mixes with the Blood of the First Men. It’s wild, uncontrolled, and Ned ends up as a four year old in Winterfell’s Godswood, staring at his reflection in the water. Eddara Stark, second-born child and first-born daughter of Rikard and Lyarra Stark looks back up at him. Ned, fully believing that this is his punishment for failing his family and best friend the first time around, decides to fix the Realm by fulfilling the Pact of Fire and Ice. The thing about being a woman is that no one ever expects you to be a threat, not even other women. The thing about being the Quiet Wolf is that everyone overlooks you until the moment your teeth sink into their throat. Concept
11. GET BACKERS
11.1.               Holy Days of Yore: Various celebration themed fic that explore Ban’s backstory as the “With Queen’s Grandson” and bring a bit more of that old black magic into the Get Backer’s lifestyle. Series
11.1.1. Lupercalia: Ban gets a magic matchmaker box in the mail and everyone wears their heart on their sleeve for Valentine’s Day. Oneshot - Posted
11.1.2. Oeastre: Ban gets roped into being the master of ceremonies for Maria’s coven and Easter gets interesting. (Everyone makes like bunnies.) Oneshot - Posted
12. GIRL GENIUS
12.1.               The Other Side of the River: One of the Jagermonsters manages to catch wind of Lucrecia’s plans and absconds with Klaus Barry during the confusion caused by the first explosion. This understandably causes some disruption in everyones plans when KB and his nanny run into Agatha during her time with the Circus. WIP - Unposted
12.2.               Threefold Path: Agatha, Gil, and Tarvek get their brains booted back in time during the si vales valeo and decided to run away and join the circus until they’re old enough to take over the world properly. WIP - Unposted
13. GUNDAM WING
13.1.               Mistakes and Misdemeanors: Heero was on blockers for the entire war due to a series of implants, which did no favours to his mental health. When the implants run out Heero gets run over by a hormone train and absolutely nobody knows how to handle that. Chaptered, WIP – Posted (Under Revision)
14. HARRY POTTER
14.1.               Black As His Name: Sirius Back lives! Because the Veil dumps his mind-and-soul into the empty body of his younger self in a world where Walburga Black lost it on her eldest son much earlier in life and Sirius was tortured until he was left brain-dead. Arcturus Black is pissed off over the treatment of one of his Heirs and since Sirius’ magic is still intact, names Sirius the Heir to House Black and proceeds to hold the Heirship over everybody’s heads for spite for as long as Sirius continues to “live”. Everyone in the Black Family is very surprised when the annual shaming ritual disguised as Sirius’ birthday party is crashed. By none other than the birthday boy himself. Sirius rolls with it and becomes a True Black in the most Marauder manner possible. WIP - Unposted
14.2.               Black Hunt Under Bloody Skies: Crossover with KHR – Regulus and Sirius both end up dumped into KHR because Death owes them a favour on its Master’s behalf. Things start to get weird after the Arcobaleno curse is broken. Regulus is actually Skull and Sirius is his Sky and they confuse the entire Mafia so much. WIP - Unposted
15. HOMESTUCK
15.1.               A Jump To The Left Behind: Post game reality has all the races living in a Galactic Republic, and the Troll Ancestors and Human Guardians all need to team up in order to solve the mystery of the planetoid-sized meteor that just barreled into the middle of their busiest spacelane because their names are written all over it. In the process of exploring the meteor they accidently wake up the Players and Sprites. Chaos ensues. Concept
15.2.               Pandora’s Final Gift: A mermaid AU where a Deep Old One gives Eridan (and only Eridan) the memories of his Game Player Self as a lark. Eridan hits the level cap for his current reality, freaks out, saves Sollux’s life, and then absconds as far away from the center of the Empire as he can get. Concept
16. INU YASHA
16.1.              Hunter’s Moon: The standard “Demon Mating Season” idea that draws on the infectious nature of demon energy in the Sengoku Jidai and runs with it. Everyone over the age of eighteen gets some. Kagome gets to go home and take a nap. Chaptered, WIP – Posted (Under Revision)
16.2.              Cry Wolf: Playing straight with the crack concept that Inuyasha and Kouga were betrothed as children. Kagome isn’t in the picture because she got yeeted back to her own time when the Shikon no Tama got purified. Chaptered, WIP – Posted (Under Revision)
17. KATEKYO HITMAN REBORN
17.1.               A Dying Will of Ice and Fire: Crossover with GOT – The Tri-Ni-Sette holders and all those bonded to them are reincarnated into Westeros Noble Houses.
17.2.               Black Hunt Under Bloody Skies: Crossover with HP – Regulus and Sirius both end up dumped into KHR because Death owes them a favour on its Master’s behalf. Things start to get weird after the Arcobaleno curse is broken. Regulus is actually Skull and Sirius is his Sky and they confuse the entire Mafia so much. WIP - Unposted
17.3.               Burning Salt Water: Crossover with OP – Xanxus gets dumped onto the Oro Jackson during the Pirate King’s last voyage when Nono’s Zero Point goes sideways and he ends up adopted by Rouge and Roger while he heals. After the execution Xanxus ends up raising the ASL trio to take over the Pirate Throne and Ace sets the Moby Dick on fire when Whitebeard kidnaps him. Meta, WIP - Unposted
17.4.               Cat’s Paws: Uri has seen enough Time Travel bullshit to know how it works, and so when Hayato gets himself killed she grabs his soul and flings herself backwards in time because fuck the timeline this is her human and he’s not allowed to abandon her again. The other Box Animals think it’s a great idea and do the same with their humans, and this results in the kind of alternate timeline that gives Byakuran a headache. In other words, Uri creates a timeline where Flame Actives are a lot more Alien than they used to be and now everyone thinks Youkai and other myths are real. Chapters, WIP - Posted
17.5.               Fire Shall Waken: All of Nono’s sons are still alive when the Cradle Affair happens and it results in the entire 10th Generation gathering up their Harmonies, rolling Xanxus into a blanket burrito, and taking off to Japan under assumed names where they proceed to spend the next eight years coddling Tsuna and being spoiled rotten by Nana in return. Meta
17.6.               Gremlins Della Varia: Mammon’s experiments with the Curse have had some odd side effects on the Varia. It all comes out during the Ring Battles and the other Arcobaleno are Judging You, Viper. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
17.7.               Karma, and the Repercussions Thereof: Crossover with Naruto. Legendary Ninja from the Elemental Countries get reincarnated into KHR and proceed to adopt all the Magic Rainbow Fire Children. Nono and Iemitsu suffer. Series, WIP
17.7.1. Karmic Balance: Kakashi and Obito are ninja married from the very start because of metaphysical bonding and some minor haunting during their last lives. Between Ninshu Shinobi needing to be in Clans and Flame Actives needing to be in Harmonies it does not take long before the child stealing begins. Gokudera Kakashi is the best wife and Dokuro Obito repents, repeatedly and often, while also having the time of his second life. Tsuna loves his Kakashi-sensei and wants to be just like him when he grows up. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
17.7.2. Karmic Justice: Madara and his brothers are reborn as Fon’s nephews and do not take kindly to the Arcobaleno curse being put on one of their relatives. The Hibari Clan proceeds to start hunting for the Man in the Iron Man en mass. Madara and his brothers hit Namimori during Nono’s visit and witness the sealing of Tsunayoshi. They don’t take well to this either. Things go worse for Tsuna than they do in canon and Madara hunts down Tobirama because he needs the resurrection to be done perfectly. Tsuna loves his Madara-shishou and wants to be just like him when he grows up. Oneshot - Posted
17.7.2.1.      Karmic Justice – Hubris: Madara comes across Xanxus in the ice while investigating the Vongola and despite Xanxus being a bit older than the usual target for child stealing decides to steal him anyway. After resurrecting Tsuna, Madara and Tobiramas next project is defrosting Xanxus. Concept
17.7.2.2.      Karmic Justice – Providence: Madara finds Xanxus on the streets while hunting in Italy for the Man in the Iron Mask. Wrath Flame calls to Wrath Flame and Madara instantly adopts the delightfully savage little boy. Then Namimori happens, and Tsuna’s seal gets him temporarily killed, and Xanxus reaches 100-year-vengance-plot levels of overprotective big brother. WIP - Unposted
17.8.               Music of the Spheres: Crossover with SM – Post Stars Usagi and Post Vongola Inheritance Tsuna are cousins who meet for the first time ever only after the Vongola’s enemies kidnap Ikkuko and Shingo. Usagi gets taken into protective custody by her Mafia relatives without being given the chance to say she doesn’t need it. Usagi then proceeds to seduce all the women, charm all the men, and accidently throw Iemitsu out the nearest window every time he’s in the same room she is. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
17.8.1. MotS - Celestial Chorus: Chibiusa’s arrival has Usagi dragging her family to Namimori to prove that Chibiusa isn’t their cousin and things get wildly out of hand. Meta
17.8.2. MotS - Sing In Exaltation: The Shingo from The Sharp Knife Of A Short Life hears the name of his ‘cousin in Namimori’ and immediately begins to meddle. Meta
17.9.               Overlooking the Obvious: They say that to truly know someone you need to walk a mile in their shoes. The adage is proven true rather dramatically when a misappropriated Possession Bullet ends up switching Gokudera and Hibari into each other’s bodies. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
17.10.           Reach For The Sky: Kamen Rider Sora and his team are the protectors of Namimori against the invasion of Youma from the dark dimension. Reborn shows up to tutor the last remaining Vongola Heir and ends up in the middle of a longstanding battle against the Forces of Evil. Does the World Greatest Hitman have what it takes to guide the mysterious masked Rider towards his true strength? Stay tuned to find out! Drabbles, Prompt Fill - Posted
17.11.           When the Nightingale Sings: Sky Flames are Dragons, and when a Sky is Sealed they turn into True Dragons once said Seal breaks. Tsuna has the Best Treasures Ever. Reborn is confused but willing to roll with it. Hayato needs to do all the research. Drabbles, Prompt Fill - Posted
17.12.           Where the Sky Meets the Sea: Crossover with OP – The ASL Trio are reborn as Sawada Tsunayoshi’s younger brothers, and the Will of D means they remember everything. Sawada Iemitsu might once have been Akagami no Shanks and despite lacking his memories knows better than to keep secrets from his wife. (Iemitsu does keep a lot of secrets from Nono, such as the fact that he has more than one son.) Iemitsu redirects Xanxus’ attention to the Family traitors, Nono never meets Tsuna, and nobody gets sealed. Then Reborn shows up, and everything is now on fire. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
17.13.
18. KYOU KARA MAOU
18.1.              The Needs Of Our Natures: Wolfram decides to prove exactly how much his mother’s son he really is and seduces Yuuri. Wolfram seduces Yuuri like it’s his job. (Yuuri likes it.) WIP - Unposted
19. MARVEL
19.1.               An Assemblage of Ice and Fire: Crossover with GOT – Team Iron Man focus, since Tony is reincarnated as Ned Stark. Meta
19.2.               Iron Laced: Crossover with TMNT – Maria Carbonell was actually Oroku Karai in disguise because she was on vacation from being a member of the Council of Shadows. Karai and all the Turtles accessed magic ninja dragon powers when they took over the Council and Karai-as-Maria passed that down to Tony. So Tony is actually a dragon and an encounter with the Enchantress leaves him locked in his dragon form. WIP - Unposted
19.3.               Miles To Go: Post-MCU Civil War almost-Time Travel where Tony grieves so hard he sends an Extremis injector capsule to the year before the Winter Soldier murdered his parents. Said capsule lands in front of a wasted 15-year-old Tony in the aftermath of a frat party. Cue the face hugger scene. Tony gets an Extremis upgrade about 30 years ahead of schedule and it’s the only reason he survives the memory download without his brain turning into mush. WIP - Unposted
19.4.               Perception: Instead of killing Scott in X3, Dark Phoenix instead fixes the brain damage that prevented him from controlling his optic blasts and then shunts him trough time an space. Scott wakes up 18-years-old in Stryker’s lab and proceeds to hijack Wolverine’s rampage so that they can both escape. James Howlett is impressed, and Cyclops hates everything but especially time travel because it ruins all his fallback plans. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
20. NARUTO
20.1.               A Feather’s Weight: Crossover with FFVII – Kakashi and Obito, along with their respective subordinates, are reincarnated in Wutai, and are thus in position to undermine a lot of Hojo’s plans simply by being themselves. WIP - Unposted
20.2.               A Space Between Ice and Fire: Crossover with GOT – The Konoha Founders and their siblings are reincarnated as Starks and Baratheons and manage to save the Realms of Men while resolving their many and varied issues with one another. Meta
20.3.               A Widening Gyre: Rin survives the Chidori and her existence is now an S-class secret. Said S-class secret distracts Obito on his way to ambush Kushina’s labour and several different chase scenes take place. They all end up in the ROOT base made from one of Tobirama’s old labs and instead of Kyuubi getting loose Team Ro, the Fourth Hokage’s team of bodyguards, Obito, Anko, and all of ROOT plus Danzo himself get dumped into the Warring Clans Era. Obito kills Danzo in a panic when he realizes that taking the Bijuu means killing Rin, Kakashi sacrifices himself again, and there is a lot more running around. Kakashi suborns ROOT en masse, Obito is stupidly overpowered and homicidal but it’s okay because Kakashi is playing damsel in distress and distracting him. The Senju and the Uchiha are all really confused by these kids, there are far too many mistaken identities, and Konoha gets founded much earlier than in canon. Meta
20.4.               According to Custom: Hashirama and Madara should not be left unsupervised (that’s why Mito and Touka tend to lurk nearby when they have tea together) because it causes them to get Brilliant Ideas. This time they decide to make friends with one another’s little brothers. How Madara went from being “nice” to Tobirama to courting the oblivious younger Senju is still something of a mystery, but there are several bets riding on when Tobirama is going to realize what’s going on. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
20.5.               Around the River Bend: Tobirama feels Itama die and runs to the river to mourn. Quite predictably he meets Madara there, and the course of History changes. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
20.6.               Colours and Promises: Set a decade after the Evil has been defeated and life returned to normal, Tobirama (once the magical superhero Dragon) is still living with the side effects of sacrificing everything to save the world while he was still a teenager. Notes on a piano, and a familiar voice singing a familiar song. Tobirama finds Madara (once the magical superhero Phoenix) and finally gets to enjoy his victory. Love can be killed, but it never dies, only ever taking on new shapes as we move on with our lives. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
20.7.               Dare Not Speak Its Name: Madara is Demi as all get out aka Madara’s a virgin with a shy dick. Also known as the AU where Madara proposes marriage to Tobirama for the sake of peace and the children. The only reason Izuna approves is because the thought of Tobirama suffering a lifetime of blueballs is hilarious to him. Meta
20.8.               Heavy as the Mountain: Team 7 is losing the fight against Kaguya, but Obito and Kakashi perform a last-minute sacrifice that means the kids survive. It also causes them all to be de-aged by over a decade and thrown back in time to the Warring Clans Era. Kakashi and Obito die, Team 7 gets adopted by presumably-Hatake Kanna, then a few years later they run into Uchiha Izuna and it all descends into chaos. (Team 7 takes total advantage of everything to get their revenge on Zetsu and maybe fix some of Konoha’s longstanding issues at the same time.)  Oneshot, Prompt Fill – Posted
20.8.1. Crumble To The Sea: The adventures of time travelling Team 7 as they get adopted by the Uchiha Clan, arrange to make Izuna’s life miserable until he proves worthy of courting their An-chan, and get aggressively mother-henned by Uchiha Madara. (The last one came as a bit of a surprise.) Kurama ends up adopting the Uchiha Clan because he likes frustrating Zetsu, and Team 7 appreciates the extra time to grow taller before they need to go weed whacking. Concept
20.9.               In Konoha We Dance: The Uchiha Clan has a tradition of belly dancing and it fixes everything that was wrong with Konoha in canon. Series
20.9.1. O-Bon Appetite: Thanks to his dance training Izuna manages the core control to dodge Tobirama’s sword enough to avoid a fatal wound and Konoha starts off on more equal footing. Tobirama then walks into a traditional Uchiha celebration and his brain shuts off. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
20.9.2. Hot Like Burning: Kushina drags Minato to the Uchiha Police Office Party so she can make time with Mikoto and there is so much skin, Minato was not emotionally prepared for this. Fugaku takes advantage of the Yondaime’s weakness as only an Uchiha can and the glorious ‘ship FuMiKuMi sets sail. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
20.9.3. Got This Fire Burning: Overnight shifts at the Mission Desk gets boring. Konoha ninja like to dance, because dancing isn’t boring. Kakashi shows them all how it’s done when a member of Team 7 hits it. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
20.10.           Karma, and the Repercussions Thereof: Crossover with KHR – Legendary Ninja from the Elemental Countries get reincarnated into KHR and proceed to adopt all the Magic Rainbow Fire Children. Nono and Iemitsu suffer. Series - WIP
20.10.1. WIP, Chaptered - Posted
20.10.2.1.  Karmic Justice – Hubris: Madara comes across Xanxus in the ice while investigating the Vongola and despite Xanxus being a bit older than the usual target for child stealing decides to steal him anyway. After resurrecting Tsuna, Madara and Tobirama’s next project is defrosting Xanxus. Concept
20.10.2.2.  Karmic Justice – Providence: Madara finds Xanxus on the streets while hunting in Italy for the Man in the Iron Mask. Wrath Flame calls to Wrath Flame and Madara instantly adopts the delightfully savage little boy. Then Namimori happens, and Tsuna’s seal gets him temporarily killed, and Xanxus reaches 100-year-Xanatos-Gambit-vengance-plot levels of overprotective big brother. WIP - Unposted
20.11.           Look the Innocent Flower: Orochimaru gets the Hat instead of Minato because instead of working for Danzo he creates his Baby-no-Jutsu (the same one that produced Rogu and Mitsuki) and that’s how Orochimaru accidently turns Tenzo into the Orochimaru-and-Tsunade lovechild while field testing some gene-splicing adoption techniques. Sarutobi is so delighted by all the babies he names Orochimaru his successor without any further debate. Konoha proceeds to become a somewhat androgynous, gender-fluid utopia full off affectionate, friendly people who only want you for your body. Orochimaru refuses to allow hypocrisy in his Konoha and loyalty to ones comrades is not only encouraged, it’s enforced. Meta
20.12.           Negotiation is an Artform: Remix of The Art of Negotiation by Kage88 – Konoha’s Founders take a trip to Uzushio and the Uzumaki are annoyingly persistent in their attentions, even when said attentions are unwanted. Tobirama’s political savvy is not to be underestimated, and Tobirama’s just as ridiculously overprotective of his loved ones as his relatives are of him. Bitchy pining resolves into dating, and the only reason Tobirama lets Hashirama get away with betting on his love life is because Hashirama was the only one who had faith in Tobirama making the first move. 20.14.           Only Fools Rush In: Also known as the Uchiha Get Catnipped AU – the scene of Rin’s suicide is a few seconds off from canon and this not only results in Rin remaining alive, but Obito is also welcomed back to life so enthusiastically by his teammates that his Makengyou spontaneously manifests. A year or so later, Danzo attempts to use an experimental drug to weaken the Uchiha Clan enough for ROOT to have an easy time killing them and/or an excuse for eradicating the entire Clan. Only the drug is a happy-making drug that has every single member of the Clan manifest the Makengyou and immediately run off to snuggle their friends, family, and sundry other precious people. Meta
20.15.           Red in Hand and Claw: Madara has Raptor Summons. This fact is significantly more terrifying than anyone outside of the Uchiha Clan is really aware of. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
20.16.           Roads Diverged: Kakashi from a Darker-Than-Canon AU ends his fight with Obito with mutual destruction, and as they both lay dying Kakashi confesses to having always loved Obito. Obito being Obito and therefore unholy levels of Extra even for an Uchiha, proceeds to use Edo Tensai on Team 7 in order to heal Kakashi and then fling him through dimensions until he lands in a Lighter-Than-Canon AU where Kakashi sees Rin in time to avoid hitting her with the Chidori. Things spiral from there. Chaptered, WIP - Posted

Too bad for them, the new-and-improved Shen Qingqui is here to stay. Meta
20.18.           That We Answer to Our Stars: Crossover with SW – Kaguya’s reality warp has some strange side effects to the point of ridiculousness. All the Uchiha to ever exist are resurrected and then dumped wholesale onto an alien deathworld that is essentially what Training Ground 44 would be if it was allowed to cover an entire planet. The Uchiha proceed to seduce the Jedi and foil all of Palpatine’s plans for galactic domination. Meta, Chaptered WIP - Posted
20.19.           The Memory Remains: Canon divergence via the reincarnation of Uchiha Izuna, his wife Kanna, and Senju Touka as Uchiha Obito, Hatake Kakashi, and Nohara Rin. Yes, they retained all their memories. Yes, Konoha is going to suffer for its sins against the children. Yes, this is going to end in a Team Minato threesome. Meta
20.20.           The Thin Line: Kakashi loses patience with the Sandaime when no appreciable action is taken to remove Danzo from power even after Kakashi literally reports to Sarutobi’s face that he was ordered by Danzo to assassinate the Third Hokage. So Kakashi crashes an Uchiha Clan meeting and asks them to run away with him and his cute little brothers to a lovely tropical Island. Cue the Uchiha Exodus That Fucks Over Canon. Kakashi and the Uchiha Clan proceed to re-found Uzushio and collect a few S-class missing nin along the way. Meta, WIP - Unposted
20.21.           The Waters and the Wild: The Senju are High Court Fae, and the Uchiha are Wild Hunt Shapeshifters. 20.23.5.                Quoth the Raven: Danzo’s schemes got him chased out of Konoha to escape execution, and he invades during the Chunin Exams in order to get his revenge. Summoning Tobirama using the Edo Tensai was probably not the best plan. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
20.24.           Tsukumogami No Kankurou: While he is still very young, Kankurou signs a Summons contract with the Tsukumogami (aka the Muppet Theater Troupe) and then proceeds to interrupt Yashamaru’s “attack” on Gaara while simultaneously wreaking havoc across the entirety of Sunagakure. All of this is done to get back at Rasa for not letting Kankurou play with his baby brother. The Middle Child Syndrome is strong in this one. Never underestimate the power of petty spite. 15.17 Final Thoughts (2/2)
Part one here. OKAY, let’s Talk About Dean™, shall we?
Dean has been flatly angry this season—really, he hasn’t meaningfully moved past the place he was in at 14.20 or 15.01. This empty rage, clawing for moral high ground, searching for some vicious place of agency and righteousness, has manifested in ugly ways all season, from the way he’s treated Cas and Jack, to stuff like executing the vampire kid in 15.04 or the bar dude in 15.07. Sam has not been exempt from complicity in this pattern; we’ve seen a lot more unthinking hunts, like in 15.10 or 15.15, wherein the motive and the story is secondary to the necessity of the Success of the Justified Kill at the end of the book. The shorthand for hunting this season has been killing things, not saving people.
Dean saying Jack isn’t family: FINALLY. thank you. It’s true, it’s always been true, this has always been Dean’s opinion, since season 13: his affection for Jack has always been fundamentally conditional. And I’m so glad to hear him openly acknowledge it in a way neither Jack nor Sam can make excuses for. (even though poor Jack, bless his heart, still tries—in the sense that he understands Dean’s straightforward hostility in a simple way that is nearly a comfort. More on that in a separate post.)
Dean’s speech to Jack in the car: wowowowow. Dean pushing Jack to suicide SURE IS SOMETHING, ain’t it? Amazing. He tells Jack, with no sense of irony or illusion, thank you for killing yourself so that Sam and I can finally be free to have a life. What’s so FUNNY here is that Dean easily could have said many things that would have been more sympathetic—like, thanks for doing this to save the world. Instead, the way he contextualizes the worth of Jack’s sacrifice is in exactly the same terms Billie used last episode: what it means for him personally.
This is an unsightly peak of selfishness. Even during the sporadic times Dean tries in this episode and in 15.16 to contextualize his need to be free of Chuck as something for Sam’s sake as much as his own, his protectiveness is much more explicitly and significantly of Their Lives. And Their Lives are not equally Sam’s: their little world’s status quo, the car the hunt the music, belongs to Dean. The amount of ownership that Dean’s had? Made him more vulnerable to the revelation of Chuck’s control, and more unhinged as he seeks to win it back. Dean’s sense of self is much less relentlessly internal than Sam’s, going back even to childhood.
I know you feel that way about Chuck, Sam says, because he has known this feeling since season 5, the revelation that every choice he made, every tiny rebellion he thought he managed, was in service to a dark plan. He knows, and he knows Dean is not dealing well, and he knows why.
I’ve already written a lot about the rest of Sam’s speech, but I gotta repeat anyway how much I LOVE Sam’s stubborn insistence that, yeah, Dean, you definitely protected me from Dad and Lucifer both, and it is in fact the only thing I’m 100% certain of.
Dean threatens Sam with lethal violence. This is not the first time, obviously, but the way it happened actually is a pretty fascinating break from tradition!
For one, this is not a Moral High Ground Thing. Dean is making no judgment here; he’s not killing Sam For His Own Good. Sam isn’t on his knees. It’s not that Dean thinks Sam is in the grip of some dark power. Dean knows Sam is just, y’know, disagreeing with him over Jack’s suicide.
This is also not an Under the Influence thing. Dean isn’t a demon, he isn’t possessed, he isn’t bearing the Mark of Cain. This is straight up, unthinking rage and frustration, unleashed in destructiveness.
If Dean HAD gone through with shooting Sam here, I’m certain he would have regretted it instantly and view it as an awful mistake [and probably we’d be watching him castigate himself over this terrible sad unavoidable tragedy]. Ironically enough, Jack’s accidental killing of Mary in 14.17 would then be the closest point of comparison—and that’s being way too generous to Dean. Jack didn’t actually intend to point lethal power at anyone, whereas Dean very much chose to aim and cock his gun.
Dean…. isn’t really a very good agent of free will, historically. In times of crisis, Dean has a pattern of being willing to go along with the first plan that gives him some kind of autonomy or power, even if it takes away more of his or someone else’s autonomy in the long term (see: selling his soul in s2; signing up for Team Heaven in s4; nearly saying yes to Michael in s5; letting Gadreel possess Sam in s9; accepting the Mark of Cain in s9; agreeing to throw himself into space and kill Sam for Death in s10; saying yes to Michael to kill Lucifer in s13; nearly caging himself in the Ma’lak box in s14; nearly shooting Jack on Chuck’s orders in s14; going along with Billie’s plan in s15). He often finds himself willing to give up freedom for security. Which isn’t always the wrong decision, sometimes it’s prudent! But he’s much less of a contrarian than what he sells himself as.
Sam, actually, for all the times that he’s lost his autonomy, and for all that he is often narratively subordinated, is the one who’s the eternal spanner in the works. He talks Dean down from a bunch of the previous examples. He’s the guy whose dramatic speeches are ruining all of Chuck’s fratricide fics—expressions of Chuck’s issues with his own sister. It’s Sam who had the bullet wound connection to Chuck’s mind, and it’s Sam who paralleled Amara this episode. Sam is a placater, Sam is the guy that Chuck really, really has a problem with, and I want to see this explored more.
Dean threatened to kill Sam because Sam was refusing to accept his fate. The destiny that Sam refused was killing Jack, who has been Sam’s investment, Sam’s kid, and Sam’s parallel, to help Dean escape his destiny. This feels like a thesis, or something like it: it’s an encapsulation of how Sam and Dean’s fates are tied together not just by love, but by an undeniable core of violence and a chilling imbalance of emotional power: love and protection inosculated with harm. Dean’s angry, he’s breaking down, he’s going off the rails, and it’s in the face of this that Sam, with blood on his face, offers unity: he tearfully makes his pitch, insists that Dean is good, that Dean won’t sacrifice Sam, that his protection is true.

Jin Guangyao's Violation of 忠孝仁义
So I had written about WWX and his strong sense of 忠孝仁义 last week. While I was writing it, I kept on thinking about JGY and how he managed to violate all of these virtues. I wanted to go into this characterization of him because I find it so interesting how opposite he is to WWX in the decisions he made. (Warning: i’m not nice to JGY here so if you don’t want him dragged, don’t read?)
Tumblr media
忠- loyalty, devotion, fidelity (usually for country or monarch)
Tumblr media
(Can I take a moment to talk about how much I LOVE THIS SHOT?! The blood of WRH on the camera lens, WRH falling over, the sudden shift to brightness that mirrors the scene in ep 50 where JGY obscures the sun in his bow (picture above the read more cut)! I can’t get over how much I LOVE the lighting and the way WRH collapses, making way for JGY to become the new sun. Foreshadowing much CQL Crew?!)
This one might be a stretch depending on how you read JGY. I fully believe he went to work for Wen Ruohan as Wen Zhuliu did -- seeking someone who will value his skills. However, WZL died for WRH and JGY just bided his time. (Note: While we know very little about Wen Zhuliu, we know he was at least 忠 and 义. He died for WRH and Wen Chao and refused to let WC desecrate Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan’s bodies. For that, I have to give him respect. He, despite everything, still had that jianghu sense of 义. Also, the man can count. And knows what a golden core feels like.)
So we know JGY gave Lan Xichen the maps, but he also lured them to Nightless City where the puppets were waiting. Had WWX not brought out the Stygian Tiger Amulet, would JGY have murdered WRH? Or would he have stayed in the shadows forever? As a viewer I have no idea what JGY is thinking, what he’s doing, or what he’s hoping for. He hides so well his intentions that there is debate about if he really was helping with the Sunshot Campaign or not! That isn’t something you can say about someone with loyalty.
What upsets me further is that Nie Mingjie, having been JGY’s superior officer, sees JGY more clearly than LXC can. NMJ has seen JGY murder and has seen the level of self-serving vindictiveness JGY is capable of. In the case of the Sunshot Campaign, this self-serving attitude made JGY become a double agent uncommitted to either side. Too bad NMJ could not convince LXC of JGY’s duplicity. I’m gonna blame those dimples.
The fact that we do not know JGY’s intent really shows his lack of 忠. If You Stand For Nothing, JGY, What Will You Fall For? (Answer: Himself and that is not 忠)
孝 - filial piety (deference to your lineage)
So for 孝, you’re supposed to respect your parents, honor your parents, and defer to your parents. What are you not supposed to do? Kill you father. That’s what.
So this should’ve been a really short section because that’s pretty cut and dry. But I want to look at what JGY says to JGS when JGY brings in Sisi and the other women.
Tumblr media
(He’s so creepy in this picture! *shudders*)
“父亲,我给你找来了你最爱的女人. 有很多个. 你高兴吗?”
“Father, I have brought you your favorite -- women. There are many. Are you happy?”
(Translation note: you can translate the line as your favorite women or your favorite -- women. I chose to translate it as the latter due to the context.)
First of all, the tone. JGY’s voice is breathy. I can almost hear a smile. He has zero moral qualms about this. He addresses his father as father, not dad or anything close. But he does acknowledge that relationship. And then he says he’s brought JGS’s favorite. There’s a slight emphasis on the favorite there. And it’s creepy. JGY adds the next line and goose bumps start to form on my skin. He knows his father’s sins and he’s punishing his father with it. Why are you doing this JGY?! And at the end, when it asks “Are you happy?” his voice is so sinister I want to scream. JGY clearly knows what he’s doing. He knows exactly what it means to be 孝 and chooses to make a mockery of 孝, to make a mockery of his father, and to kill his father.
And then, after he watches JGS die, he tells Sisi and the other women to continue -- to desecrate JGS’s body. This is about as un-孝 as one can get! Remember, WWX and JC were willing to die to get JFM and YZY’s bodies back so they could be cremated and honored. The difference here is night and day! Yes, JGY was very good to his mother, including building a Guanyin Statue in her likeness and sparing Sisi who was a friend of his mother’s, but I cannot get over how much of an abomination he was toward JGS (even if JGS deserved an awful death).
仁 - benevolence, humanity, love of man
JGY has no 仁. Does JGY love anyone other than himself? Maybe his mom. (He might have some 仁 towards Su Sh*t She but that’s only suggested by the last couple of episodes.) That’s really it. He might have loved Jin Ling as his nephew. He might have loved LXC for LXC’s kindness and brotherhood. He might have loved Qin Su as whatever relationship he thinks they had. But when push comes to shove, JGY has zero benevolence towards anyone. He’s willing to kill Qin Su, take Jin Ling hostage, and take LXC hostage. (He also has no 义 but that’s the next section!)
And there’s ep 23. When LXC, JGS, and NMJ were discussing what to do with the Wens,  JGY suggested the Wens be imprisoned at QiongQi Path. Since WRH had ordered the slaughter of multiple clans, including the Jiangs at Lotus Pier, doing the same to him would not be considered unreasonable. Ruthless, yes, but a good show of might and order. This acceptance of murder is due to the concept of 诛九族. 诛九族 (zhū jiǔ zú) is one of the most severe punishments in ancient China. The character breakdown makes it fairly self explanatory:
诛 - to execute, kill, put to death
九 - nine
族 - family, clan,ethnic group, or tribe
诛九族 condemns you and your entire family to death (Depending on the source, some say it’s you + 8 types of relatives. Some say it’s everyone related to you from 4 generations above to 4 generations below).
By suggesting the Wen remnants be imprisoned and not slaughtered, JGY presented himself as 仁. However, by turning around and slaughtering the people per JGS’s wishes, JGY knowingly chose the immoral path where blood flowed like rivers.
(Also! The way this shot pans down makes me think about how JGY is descending into a hell of his own making...)
Tumblr media
义-  righteousness and code of brotherhood
Good god, 义. I have so many feelings about 义. Let’s start with some history because CONTEXT is so important. So when you ask a chinese person on the street to give you an example of 义, I’m willing to bet one of the most common answers you will get is 桃园结义 (tao yuan jie yi, or peach garden/grove establishment of brotherhood). This is THE story of fraternal love between non-blood related men.
So quick and dirty synopsis of 桃园结义 and the three kingdoms story (I actually haven’t read it and it’s been a while since I actually tried to figure out the plot… so hopefully this is all correct!). Three men (刘备、关羽、张飞/ Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei) met on the streets, fought each other, became besties, and decided to start a rebellion. They took over one third of the country with the oldest (刘备) being the monarch and the other two working at his side (a little Yunmeng bros feel there, right? You’ll be the leader, I’ll be your right hand man). And they died for each other. 关羽 was the first to go. To seek revenge, 张飞 worked his men to the rebellion. Two of 张飞’s subordinates ultimately decapitated him while he was sleeping and brought it to their enemy. 张飞’s head and body are buried in two different cities in China (doesn’t this make you think of NMJ’s fate? Because it did when I was thinking about this and I wanted to cry. Also, 张飞 started out as a butcher. SERIOUSLY CQL/MDZS, can we pretend to be SUBTLE!?). 刘备 continued seeking revenge. Prior to 关羽’s death, the three kingdoms were in semi-equilibrium where the two smaller ones were allied against the larger. However, 关羽 being killed by their kinda-ally destroyed the delicate balance between the three kingdoms. 刘备 could’ve tried to make peace but he wasn’t going to let his sworn brother’s murder go unavenged. They all died in the end but with honor and brotherhood intact. 刘备 and 张飞’s determination to avenge 关羽’s death epitomizes the virtue of 义. They are willing to die for eachother.
In CQL the parallelism to the 桃园结义 imagery is obvious to anyone who has a cultural background that screams Romance of Three Kingdoms at you. Let’s take a look, ok?
A quick Google image search yields these images (I couldn’t choose):
Tumblr media
You know what they look like? This (from ep 40):
Tumblr media
You know what 桃园结义 looks like when mainland China made a live action? This:
Tumblr media
And you know what that reminds me of in CQL (ep 23)?
Tumblr media
Are you freaking out now about the visual parallels? Ok. Good. Because we’re moving onto a tiny bit of text comparison because i’m excited and i can.
Per Romance of Three Kingdoms (note: historically inspired novel, not history), 刘备、关羽、张飞 swore the following oath:
“念刘备、关羽、张飞,
Hope that Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei
虽然异姓,既结为兄弟,
Even though we have different last names,since we have sworn to be brothers
则同心协力,救困扶危;
Then let us unite our hearts and efforts towards helping the needy
上报国家,下安黎庶。
Repaying our country, bringing peace to the people.
不求同年同月同日生,
We do not ask to be born on the same day of the same month of the same year
只愿同年同月同日死。
But hope to die on the same day of the same month of the same year
皇天后土,实鉴此心,
Heaven and earth, verify our hearts
背义忘恩,天人共戮!”
If we turn our backs to righteousness and forget charity, may we be slaughtered by all.
Now, let’s look at the oath said by the 3zun:
“神明在上。
Brilliant gods above,
今日我兄弟三人在此立下重誓,
Today, we three brothers swear a solemn oath here
上报仙门,下安黎庶 ,
To repay our cultivation sects, To bring peace to the people.
天地同证,如有异心,
Heaven and earth be our witnesses. If we become disloyal,
千夫所指,天人共怒”
May a thousand men point their fingers at us and may we be incite the anger of all
Even some of the wording is verbatim. The parts I bolded are what I was excited by since they’re either parallel or verbatim.
The first set of lines: 上报国家,下安黎庶 and 上报仙门,下安黎庶 . (Remember when I guessed in my WWX post that since there are no countries, the cultivation sects are the target of 忠? This is my proof that I was right!) My hubris aside, this is the part of their oath where they swear to be both 忠 and 仁 together. The wording is verbatim except for the part that doesn’t apply to the CQL universe!
The second set of lines: 天人共戮 vs 天人共怒. The sentence/phrase format and message is identical-- betray this oath and incur wrath.  (I can’t help but headcanon NMJ wanted to say 天人共戮 because it’s so much more metal but JGY was like, that’s really severe and convinced LXC to side with him to get it changed.)
Even the structure of the oaths are similar. Both oaths start with an introduction (we are three who want to be brothers), both oaths ask the heaven and earth to see them (Heaven and earth, verify our hearts & heaven and earth be our witnesses), and both oaths call upon the wrath of the people for vindication in case of betrayal. The CQL version is an abridged version of the three kingdoms oath and the writers set that up along with all the imagery because they want us to be constantly thinking about the three kingdoms bros and their amazing “even after death we’re still brothers” sense of 义.  They want us to compare JGY’s 义 with that 义 and find JGY lacking.
The obvious betrayal of 义 is NMJ’s death.  Not only is JGY the cause of NMJ’s death, he butchers (i’m cringing at my own pun... but it’s so accurate) NMJ’s body so that NMJ’s spirit cannot rest.
But, to me, what JGY does to LXC is betrayal on par with what he does to NMJ (and not dissimilar to what Xue Yang does to Xiao Xingchen). As we went over in the section about 仁, JGY says one thing so that LXC suggest JGY handles the matter. When everyone leaves, JGY does the un-仁 thing, essentially with LXC’s blessing. JGY kills NMJ but he does it by asking LXC to teach him how to play guqin. LXC becomes an unknowing accomplice (like XXC who becomes the killer of tongueless victims of corpse poison).
So remember in my WWX post how I said WWX took on what he perceived as JC’s debts so JC doesn’t end up 不仁不义? JGY says one thing and does another in front of LXC. He knows LXC cares deeply about being righteous and kind. He knows LXC wants to do good. And he leads LXC down a path of self doubt and regret. LXC ends up teaching JGY the techniques that kill NMJ. LXC lets JGY handle the Wen remnants. Thus, unlike WWX who tries to absolve JC, JGY intentionally puts LXC into the position of 不仁不义.
Can WWX and JGY be more diametrically opposed (foes)?

Another one of those “Catra didn’t abuse Hordak; he abused her, and it was terrible!” posts crossed my dash today, and it got me thinking again. About something I haven’t seen elaborated upon before. At least not recently.
This isn’t going to be about whether Hordak ruined Catra, or whether Catra manipulated Hordak (that’s this masterpost right here!). They both harmed one another, obviously, and I’m not going to go into who was the “more evil” of the two.
What I am going to go into is a bit of a breakdown of why Hordak treated Catra as he did. Not specifically why he used certain punishments (hint: it’s because he has nearly no positive social skills because have you seen Horde Prime?), but whether or not he should have been more supportive/trusting of her in seasons two and three. Obviously not four, because yikes, but should he have been more willing to accept her as a trusted subordinate?
Short answer: No.
Long answer: strap in, friends and neighbors. We’re gonna look at why Catra was a poor investment from the get-go. But first, a disclaimer!
I am in no way condoning the sorts of punishments Hordak inflicted upon Catra. Asphyxiation and Shipment off to Beast Island are not CF-approved methods of behavior modification. Got it? Good. Now, to business.
The chief reason I feel that Hordak was right in not trusting Catra, despite her efforts at serving him, is because said efforts weren’t honest. And like, I know that sounds sort of cheesy, given that we’re dealing with Hordak here, but hear me out.
Tumblr media
When Catra pledges her loyalty to Hordak, she’s lying. Mind you, she might be lying to herself as much as she is to him (meaning that she might temporarily believe in her own conviction), but that doesn’t change the fact that she is never truly loyal to him. Her goals are never really his goals. She’s not like Entrapta, invested in his interests, actually bonding with him in any way. She has no true allegiance to him beyond using him, and his trust, to “beat” Shadow Weaver and Adora. And while I’m not certain Hordak knows enough about her personally to understand the emotional reasons, I do think that he recognizes her as someone who is trying to climb rank for personal goals. Unlike Entrapta, who cares nothing for rank and is always genuine.
Tumblr media
Catra’s personal goals resulting in damaging decisions is readily apparent in her little mini-arc with Shadow Weaver during season two. Hordak orders her to send Shadow Weaver to Beast Island because Shadow Weaver is legitimately dangerous. She has knowledge of the Horde. She has knowledge of sorcery. Hordak is making a sound, if admittedly cruel, tactical decision to kill her because she represents a severe danger to him and the Horde at large. Instead of accepting this sound logic, Catra keeps Shadow Weaver alive because of her own emotional connections to her.
Now, I’m not blaming Catra for this in a moral sense, really, because I know the painful reason she does this, but pragmatically, this is a horrible decision. Shadow Weaver does escape. And she does spill Horde secrets to the Rebellion. And she lets the Rebellion in on one of the most devastating attacks the Horde endures besides what happens in season four.
Hordak is right. He’s not nice about it, and he’s definitely not gentle in his reactions, but he is absolutely right about what should have been done regarding Shadow Weaver from the beginning.
Tumblr media
Add to this glaring error the fact that Catra lies to him about it. How is he to work with a second-in-command that makes terrible decisions, against orders, according to her own personal goals, and then tries to cover it up? It’s just not wise for him to truly trust her.
Also: when he does actually trust her, fueled by his own issues with self-worth and her manipulative lies, she leads him down an incredibly self-destructive path. She sentences his one true friend to death. She never truly focuses on supporting his plans or supporting him, instead providing stability only as long as it benefits her. Once her deception is revealed, she turns on him violently. To save her own life, yes, but that life wouldn’t need saving if she hadn’t essentially killed Entrapta to get her little victory over Adora.
And yes, yes, Hordak is evil, and his plans shouldn’t be bolstered, but that doesn’t change the fact that, to him, Catra is dangerous. Though supporting him didn’t have to just include supporting the warfare; supporting him could have included supporting Entrapta, who helped him with his illness and his true personal goals.
Now, add to all of this the fact that she can physically kill him at any time, and I feel that it’s pretty apparent that him giving her legitimate trust was a Bad Idea.
But CF, you might say, CF, what if he was nicer to her? What if he hadn’t endangered her with his temper, been a Good Boss instead of choking her or trying to send her to Beast Island?
Tumblr media
Well, dear reader, maybe she would have been a safer subordinate to him, then. Maybe. But remember what she did to Entrapta. Remember what she did to Scorpia, who only loved her and never, ever hurt her. Remember that Catra, in her pain, lashed out and hurt every one of her friends. Badly.
Given that fact, I still don’t think she would have been a safe bet for Hordak. I mean, she wasn’t, in the end, was she? He actually did give her legitimate trust in season four, and... well. We all saw what happened.
So! In conclusion: this idea that Hordak somehow wronged Catra by not giving her the trust and praise that she deserved is silly. He didn’t give these things to her, in seasons two and three, for valid reasons pertaining to her actual bad decisions and lack of trustworthiness. He wasn’t being petty, or cruel, or manipulative. He was acting on sound logic.
Shame he failed to continue with that logic in season four; it might have protected him, but we all know why things ended as they did.

BROLY and GOKU are BROTHERS (AU/Headcanon) PART 1
So, the overall premise of this AU is kind of a rewrite to Goku’s lineage. Instead of Raditz being his brother, it’s actually BROLY who’s Goku’s twin brother!
Tumblr media
The story goes like this; Gine was a lower class medical Saiyan who essentially kept the warrior saiyans alive through the equipment they gained from other planets they inhabited or destroyed. Gine grew this hatred for fighting as a whole and was ostracized for her overwhelming sympathy and mutual respect for other Alien species. Eventually, she helped save the life of a Saiyan elite from death who was named Bardock. A hard headed patriot of the Saiyan race that sought out their best interest, even if it went against their races ignorance and Pride. Of course after a while Bardock and Gine bond over one another and eventually she comes to bear twins with him. One named after Bardock’s Grandfather who was the strongest great ape of his time “Kakarot” (Gine rolls her eyes, who would name their kid after their grandparent? 👀) and the other named by Gine herself. Choosing “Broly” as that sounded sweet to her! Even though they aren’t really supposed to see each other since Gine is a lower class and Bardock is an Elite, they both managed to have a fine family in secret, hence why no one ever really knew about these two before. Bardock in this AU is supposedly the second strongest saiyan next to King Vegeta on their planet, and comes from a lon line of insanely powerful Saiyan warriors. Bardock would still keep his old crew from the original rendition of Bardock’s story (Fasha, Borgos, Shugesh, Leek, and Taro) along with the Saiyan General Paragus who was great friends with Bardock and in turn was the only one to know about Kakarot and Broly.
Much like the beginning of the original TV Special, the Elite Saiyan Team totally dominates a planet of innocent alien inhabitants. But instead of Bardock being ambushed by a future seeing alien, he’s actually then ambushed by his OWN TEAM! Bardock is shocked to their betrayal and Fasha herself explains that this was all because of the Frieza Empire. They were ordered by Frieza himself to kill him and his family that he got word about! Bardock from there understanding the situation at hand still doesn’t back down and ends up defeating his fellow Saiyan brethren. Vowing to get revenge on Frieza for forcing them all to turn their backs on their own kind.
After Paragus finds and rescues a barely breathing Bardock from death, they both go to King Vegeta for assistance in a rebellion since word got to them in the middle of their fight that Frieza was planning on destroying the planet IF his team failed him. However, they were only met with suspicion of treason against their King and his new son training elsewhere with Private Nappa. Paragus calls him a coward, insinuating that their “King” was scared of the looming threat of Bardock possibly surpassing him, and overthrowing his position of royalty as well as the rewards that come from being in the good grace among Lord Frieza. The king enraged from his position being disrespected orders his men to kill them! And thus the two survivors are chased out of the castle.
Now with Bardock being the only one there who was strong enough to even muster a fraction of a chance at killing Frieza, chooses to stay behind as he tell’s Paragus and Gine to escape Planet Vegeta with their two sons. Since he believes that Frieza would be coming for them next. Gine at first refusing to leave her lovers side but was forced to by Paragus, sending each other one last goodbye look as he goes towards Frieza’s ship and army to finish the fight! Leading to the unfortunate obliteration to Planet Vegeta that we’re all too familiar with...
The ship Gine and Paragus ended up on gets caught in the planet’s explosion. The electrical wiring in the ships shield system haywires, accidentally sending Goku’s pod (that Gine put both boys in each just in case of an emergency) within the ship towards the automated destination; Earth. Gine immediately tries to go after him but Paragus stops her explaining that the rays from the explosion would have killed her! So she reluctantly stays, watching Kakarot’s pod in total distress of what his fate may intale...
Smash cut to little kid Bulma starring at the big telescope out in the break of the morning dawn sky, getting gitty and excited at her sights on a “shooting star” 👀
Meanwhile, the ship lands on Planet Vampa right as Broly actually starts to wake up. After three days of them waiting Patiently in the ship, and in turn Gine being in complete shambles that one of her own children is possibly stranded out there, decides that she’s had enough waiting around and loads up a pod to go find her missing son. Only for Paragus to once again distress that they can’t. He wanted to go along with her but knew deep down that they couldn’t risk Gine escaping in the slight chance that Frieza or one of his men ends up finding her and in turn them, ending their efforts of leaving the Planet’s Destruction in vein. So she begrudgingly complies at first, focusing on taking care of her other infant son in her arms.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A couple of earth days pass as Paragus learns the layout of the planet and it’s inhabitants. Gine focuses all of her efforts on finding food for them and Broly but realized that this planet was nothing good for the baby Saiyan or herself for that matter. Not to mention the ships rations were running extremely low to the point where Paragus was growing Delirious from starving himself and suggested other methods of survival. Such as killing and eating the bug like creatures for nutrients and protein. Gine knew of the stakes they faced for survival, but deep down in her heart she couldn’t bring herself to making her infant son eat something so deprived. Paragus wasn’t having any of it and was showing signs of growing irritated with her presence, so in order to escape his delusions and finally find her other son lost in Kami knows where she repacks a pod big enough for just her and Broly. But unfortunately Paragus catches her in the act and...puts her down. Single shot from the back went all the way through her chest killing her almost instantly. He didn’t want the chance of the Frieza Force capturing them again, at least that’s what he tells himself...
As the blaster shot through Gine’s chest, her last crying scream was “Kakarot!!!” knowing that her son will probably die somewhere out there in space... Broly being the little baby that he was witnessed her dying right in front of him, cried out in RAGE and transform for the first time just from the newly overwhelming emotion of sadness and grief into a fully powerful OOZARU! He didn’t even NEED the moon to transform, which Paragus nipped in the bud immediately by cutting off his tail, right as he attacked Paragus and gave him the scar on his eye that we see. As he was transformed back into a child he doesn’t even remember anything before going crazy which Paragus took full advantage of by saying his mother was killed by those bug monster things that inhabit Planet Vampa. And with Paragus being a former General of the Saiyan’s, he teaches Broly everything he knows and treats him no different than his other subordinates. Hence the drill sergeants esque treatment Broly receives from his “father.”
Every now and then, however, he’ll get flashes of his mother dying just from hearing the word “Kakarot”. Which will instill a blinding panick RAGE where he can’t be controlled! Hence why Paragus created the neck brace to keep him in line. And of course comes into play when he actually meets his long lost sibling on Earth.
(And that’s all for part 1! Stay tuned for part 2 soon, and if any of you guys like this story, lemme know if you want a “Story of Raditz” post to explain what happens NOW to the beginning DBZ storyline) 👍
how does toshiro view his lieutenant? are they friends? is she a bad subordinate? is she someone he can trust?
Tumblr media
        You already know all of these answers but I SUPPOSE I can put in my two cents. Evidently, she’s someone he considers a very close associate, a being of importance, in spite of not exhibiting so very verbally. His actions, however, displays his attachments to her quite strongly. For example, during the winter war, ‘fore they went to fight Halibel and her fraccion, he promptly asks her if she was doing alright, putting her mental and emotional state under consideration knowing she might have to fight Ichimaru -- A man he’s well-aware that she loves so intimately. Furthermore -- In the last arc, the way he looks at her the instant Cang du dropped her dying form in front of him speaks momentously of their connection. The way his eyes widen in shock. The way he tried to reach her after defeating him, after utilizing so much energy and wounds, to only fail midway. That was such a powerful moment -- I’m not ready to see it animated.
         Rangiku was the individual that presented the directional arrows of him becoming a Shinigami. Because of her, he discovered that he was the source that was gradually killing his grandmother, making her very ailing, with his Reiatsu-- Something he withheld no exact information of prior. -- Because of that eventual meeting -- He was able to spare her and enlist in the academy to which eventually brought him to his present captaincy. She was that sole push, albeit the actuality he initially never wanted to walk atop such a path -- but knowing his powers were that dangerous, he had no other alternatives than to make that painful final decision. He owes her a lot for briefly educating him there and then and eluding him from the plausibility of everlasting guilt and heartaches. I wanna believe he ended up in the tenth division by chance -- fate intertwining them both as inseparable camaraderies since their encounter decades ago -- which then began developing to what they are now. Two souls formed of pain, heartbreaks, strengths, and determination to overcome all obstacles whilst leading what their old captain has abandoned. When Isshin was in the human world -- Rangiku had been there to help him through the process of becoming captain. Aided him with his needs -- to garner respect. Scold those who murmured doubts - -so on and so forth. She always had his back and he was cognizant of it. Appreciated it.
          The only negative traits she has as a subordinate is her procrastination and terrible drinking habits. As seen, she often stresses him with incomplete paperwork -- fabricates myriad of excuses to skip said paperwork duties -- forcing others to do it for her which ultimately strains schedules and deadlines.  -- then she tends to drink during the day -- making messes -- causing unnecessary trouble for him to mend afterward and making herself incapable to function for the remaining hours of her shift. But aside from that. -- She’s naturally a prominent lieutenant. She does what she’s told outside of -- the aforementioned. Always ready to guard -- annihilate Hollows - prosecute orders. Always by his side -- protecting his back -- teasing him here ad there in hopes to get a reaction from his far too serious personage akin to their fight against Bazz -b where she teased him about how it's cute that he’s openly asking for her help. She loves him dearly and it shows as clearly as glass. In the diamond dust rebellion movie, it shows that --  how she worries for him -- how he hesitated to leave her to chase after Kusaka. The way he thanked her at the end of the movie for everything she’s done. for being there for him. He trusts her more than anyone and that's a given. Complete opposites -- coming together to form and represent squad ten. Bubbly and grumpy. illuminating and nonchalant. Social and Anti-social. They balance each other’s personalities to a tea and that’s why they work so ideally together. There’s never too much of one trait on their plates.
             And there’s something to be said when they respect each other so deeply, they never forcingly pry in things when one is irritated or distress. While some may think that ‘s an awful method. it's their way of honoring personal values. They patiently wait until the other is wholly ready to come forward to discuss their issues. He also allows her to sleep in the office for hours when required. Never waking her until needed. They seldom take each other’s share of paperwork and finish them too. In all, They’re a family, And losing one of them would surely destroy the other as well as the squad into millions of bitty pieces.
Let’s Write Cody’s Redemption Arc
Tumblr media
It’s been, what, two months since Season 7 of the Clone Wars came out? It showed more of the details of Order 66 from the clones’ perspective, showed Rex and some other clones getting their chips removed, how Ahsoka and the defected clones reacted to the Order now that no one was being mind-controlled. However, other Clones that were more than just red-shirt clones, Cody most prominently, were still subject to Order 66. Thus, “Cody stans” (of which I thought I was the only one but I suppose not) were heartbroken all over again when Cody didn’t hesitate to give the order to blast his general off a cliff after having fought alongside him for years prior. So I’ve been thinking about how exactly Cody would react if he were faced with the reality that he was being used by Palpatine both during the Republic as well as the Empire. I decided to explore exactly how that would work if not only for myself, then for the .002% of the Star Wars fandom whomst happen to care about Cody and his relationships. I’ve outlined a point-by-point timeline, detailing exactly how I feel this might play out, starting from the point of defection.
The reason that Cody couldn’t canonly separate from the Empire is in part because it would be pretty gratuitous to have yet another well known clone have his inhibitor chip removed so that he is no longer affected by Order 66. On the other hand, that would give a lot of freedom to write an actual redemption arc from the perspective of a clone that has to actively question his place as a trooper under the Empire and even the Republic to an extent. This way he can exercise agency rather than just having the chip (or lack thereof) do it for him.
Tumblr media
I believe that it would be too easy for Cody to ultimately become a rebel--he’d have to be prematurely killed off before it even got to that point. This would continue with the pattern of Cody and Rex being foils to each other. Where Rex defects immediately and we don’t really get to see the process of his questioning his role during the Clone Wars, Cody’s journey can be shown in greater detail without it having a satisfying or even definitive conclusion. (I’m saying his ending shouldn’t be open-ended, he should just straight up die.) If it were left ambiguous whether or not he developed a rebel’s ideology, he never joined the rebels anyway so it ruins the illusion.
Tumblr media
For the actual meat of the story and the aforementioned process of defection, Cody would need to go from a top rung (relatively) under the Empire to the bottom. It could mirror the fall of the jedi, specifically Obi-Wan’s fall from grace as a well-respected jedi master to an old hermit living in hiding in the middle of a sandy desert. Likewise, Cody was the first and only clone Commander for years of his life and respected by most clones and jedi alike. Then Order 66 comes and he tries to murder one of his closest companions. He then continues to show his unquestioning loyalty to the blatantly evil Empire and is of the highest rank in the new stormtrooper army.
Tumblr media
However, he was not well respected by those under his command the same way that he was during the Republic. He grew to be a bit of a racist once the Empire started enlisting (or kidnapping and grooming) humanoids that were not clones to serve in the stormtrooper army, believing that they were inferior and abusing and overworking them when they didn’t meet his unrealistic expectations. He also lost a lot of his aforementioned friends and didn’t make any new ones due to his abusive behavior. He presumably lived the rest of his life, bitterly serving the Empire, so that’s one way that his quality of life declined. However, he was still pretty high up on the Empire’s social ladder so a real fall from grace would be what actually kicks off his redemption arc.
Tumblr media
Somehow he’d have to first cut ties with the Empire, and the only way that would make any sense would be to be forcibly cut from his high-ranking position so that he is suddenly a nobody out on the streets. But as someone who served as a commanding officer longer than anyone else, that would require Darth Vader to somehow no longer have a use for him or maybe even look upon him with malice and see him as detrimental to his power. It’s possible since those under Cody eventually garnered an extremely negative opinion on him, they might band together to sabotage his position by convincing Vader that he is secretly planning a rebellion of his own. If that were the case, Vader would obviously have him executed, forcing him to escape with nothing but his life, cutting him off from the Empire and his title forever. This would diminish his status and place him on the lowest rung of society under the Empire. It would force him into hiding from any of his former cohorts, superiors, and subordinates. It would turn him into a street rat, resigned to one of the farthest corners of the galaxy where the Empire would never find out of his mortality status.
Tumblr media
Only at this point when Cody has nothing left to lose and is probably rummaging through dumpsters to get by would he finally have the chance to stop and contemplate the Empire’s oppression and conquest alongside his own role in all of it. After being forced into hiding from the Empire, he’s an open target. He was already a war hero under the Republic and only grew more brutal and discriminatory under the Empire, causing his name to be more feared among the common folk should he ever be recognized by one of them, let alone the way that clones as a whole must be feared during the Empire’s reign. If he is exposed and vulnerable, he could have been targeted on the street once people realize he is a clone. His health would definitely be on the decline after being detached from the Empire.
Tumblr media
(x) (x)
At this point it would be good to for once introduce a completely original character in this story arc that is based in nothing other than pure fanservice. They could be another human being, but they don’t have to be. If I had my pick, I’d steal from Alan Dean Foster’s Episode IX pitch and use (what I believe are called) Alesians whomst may or may not have tentacles for limbs. At this time, the focus would have to be taken away from Cody and put into focusing on the world building and characterization of this new character whomst I will dub as “Ynox” because that’s a valid space-sounding name, I’m sure. Could Ynox parallel Cody in some way? Maybe she’s a Zuko type where she comes from a rich family who held some less-than-flattering ideals (they were Separatists) and now she has some defecting of her own on her hero’s journey. For some reason along with the tentacles, I would imagine the Alesians to also possess limbs and abs buff enough to rival those of a wookie, the only difference being the sheer visibility of the contours on each tentacle from their rippling muscles due to their sleek skin and lack of furry overcoats.
Tumblr media
Anyways, Ynox is going to be Cody’s lancer and they’ll traverse the galaxy together for a little while until Cody is inevitably fridged for her benefit. Probably she’ll find him in some alleyway getting beat for being a clone. Seeing this helpless stranger, she fights off these non-force-sensitive goons, using her sheer muscle to disarm them of any weapons. She chases them off and gets Cody to safety and somewhere where he can get medical attention and not receive any further mistreatment. Ynox could be a character with a certain set of morals. She and her family were Separatists in part because they hate the Jedi Order and what they stand for. From their perspective, jedi intervene in societies and situations that are not their business and wield lethal weapons as well as eagerness to use them that are thinly veiled beneath the flowery language of being diplomatic monks. Because of that, Ynox may be wary of any clones by association, although she does not know about Cody’s own legacy. Although she may dislike clones as a knee-jerk reaction, Cody hasn’t given her any reasons not to help him.
Tumblr media
The shared character motivational part is where I draw a blank. I want these two characters to start travelling together, all the while realizing that the things that they used to believe are relics of an old, flawed system. But they need immediate needs to get from Point A to Point B if the overarching plot is to be accomplished. Otherwise it’s just characters going through the motions with no personal investment. There is a want vs. need dichotomy that still needs figuring out because of this. One of the wants they need to want is to find anyone that Cody knew that fought for the Republic. Obviously the first person he will always have on his mind will be Rex, but since Rex has wiped himself off the map as well, they probably both assume each other dead. The only one that still has political power would be Senator Organa. They’d look for him first since he’s the only one that’s not in hiding.
Tumblr media
Something that I’ve neglected to note but happens earlier on in the narrative is that not only does Cody get ungraciously excommunicated from the Empire, but he also gets a concussion in the process. This is what knocks out of him the hatred of all non-clones as troopers as well as his immediate and unexplained desire to murder all jedi. And as Cody continues on his travels to find people connected to his past, a lot of his past memories will come to light as well. Maybe he remembers Kenobi and how close they grew when they fought alongside each other with the 212th Battalion. Does he regret killing him? It doesn’t matter either way because just like all his other old friends, he believes he is now dead... until someone tips him and Ynox off that Kenobi may still be alive! This could spur him on to try and find where he is. On the way they have wacky adventures and Cody’s relationships from the Clone Wars as well as the entirety of Ynox’s backstory (turns out Organa is attuned to the fact that her family were notorious Separatists) are fleshed out. Some of the adventures will matter to the overarching plot with recurring both original and preexisting characters while some will be pure filler. I’m thinking it could have a sort of Orange is the New Black or Handmaid’s Tale setup where a present conflict is being shown with an interwoven flashback subplot, and they are thematically linked somehow.
Tumblr media
They’ll try to hide Cody if they believe that him being recognized as a clone will put them in any sort of danger. They meetup with Organa eventually and try to negotiate with him. Ynox is already on tense terms with him, having been on the other side of the political spectrum. They try to hide Cody from him since he would definitely recognize him for who he is. Maybe Cody gets found out and they are forced to make a daring escape and move on to the next planet for more leads on anyone else’s whereabouts. Their tracking of Kenobi could finally pay off when it leads them to Tatooine. However little do they know they’ve been tracked the entire time by a bounty hunter sent by Vader. They’d been attacked by them multiple times but never realized they were the same person who’d had it out for them to begin with. But none of that matters once they get to Tatooine and let their guard down.
Tumblr media
It may have been easy to find the planet on which Obi-Wan now lives, but it’s much harder to find his exact location when the planet is covered in nothing but sand for miles and all the houses that are spread a ranch’s worth apart from one another look exactly the same. At this point, Cody must make peace with the fact that he may never find the closure or meaning that he’s been looking for and that he can’t be chasing his own tail, trying to find Obi-Wan or anyone else when that endeavor could be entirely fruitless. He decides he’ll stop and make a life for himself separate from both the Republic and the Empire. And just as he decides that the assassin strikes. Cody is killed before he can find Obi-Wan, before Obi-Wan strolls into town just a few hours later and meets Ynox. Neither of them recognize each other and neither of them know each other’s relationship to Cody.
Tumblr media
What a long stream of consciousness! It was far more specific than I initially intended it to be but because some things were more specific, it raised more questions with rather vague or nonexistent answers. Maybe this is less of a redemption arc and more or a complete mess. However I hope it might get anyone who stuck around to read it thinking about what types of character arcs defected clones might go through. Season 7 of the Clone Wars gave us a little more insight to Rex’s character development, but I wanted to see more of a de-radicalization process. Perhaps this whole thing should have been about Rex instead. But people seemed so upset over Cody’s betrayal (even though at this point it’s the only direction that makes sense), so I thought that it couldn’t hurt to fantasize.
Chapter 1: The Battle of Behalla
In this world, there are many endings that are endings in appearance only, and actually the beginning of another story.
The Battle of Belhalla, which occurred in early spring of the Grann Year 760, was one such ending.
The Grannvalian Empire's records only described a simple account: the Grannvalian King's son-in-law, House Velthomer's Duke Arvis, who would afterwards become the first emperor of the Grannvalian Empire; defeated the liberation army at Belhalla Field, killed the ringleader, Prince Sigurd of House Chalphy; and squashed the rebellion.
Compared to the accounts left describing Arvis’ magnificent victories during the subsequent battles that unified the lands, it was really quite short, and when those who didn’t know the details read it, they thought the rebellion that Sigurd started was not that big of an event in the slightest.
But what really happened?
The records list no other casualties than Prince Sigurd. However, at the Battle of Belhalla, and in the chain of battles, schemes, and other events leading up to it; the powerful leaders across the continent were divided into enemy and ally, bringing many of them to their deaths.
Even more surprising, was that among the deceased were descendants of the Twelve Crusaders of legend, including many of those who'd inherited legendary weapons:
Prince Kurth of The Kingdom of Grannvale, inheritor to The Book of Naga
Duke Byron and Prince Sigurd of House Chalphy, both inheritors to the Holy Sword, Tyrfing
King Eldigan of The Kingdom of Nordion, inheritor to the Demon Sword, Mystletainn
Prince Quan of The Kingdom of Leonster, inheritor to the Earth Lance, Gáe Bolg
Princess Brigid of House Jungby, inheritor to the Holy Bow, Yewfelle
Duke Lombard of House Dozel, inheritor to the Holy Axe, Helswath
Duke Reptor of House Freige, inheritor to the Holy Thunder Tome, Mjölnir
High Priest Claud of House Edda, inheritor to the Holy Staff, Valkyrie
Prince Lewyn of The Kingdom of Silesse, inheritor to the Holy Wind Tome, Forseti
and King Mananan of The Kingdom of Isaach, inheritor to the Divine Blade, Balmung.
The only two survivors were Duke Arvis of House Velthomer, inheritor to the Holy Fire Tome, Valflame; and King Travant of the Kingdom of Thracia, inheritor to the Heavens Lance, Gungnir.
For so many of the Crusaders to meet death… it was only common sense that something unthinkable had happened, leading people to create all sorts of rumors.
One such rumor was that countless fireballs fell from the heavens during The Battle of Belhalla.
"If that isn’t what happened, then how else could so many of the Crusaders have died?" The person who started the rumor wondered.
But those rumors simply explained all that had transpired, and didn't shed light on any of the evil plots being carried out in the background.
Because if even Duke Arvis, as a major character of those stories being kept secret from the world, did not notice that The Battle of Belhalla was nothing more than the end of a prologue, it was only natural that the people who started those (laughably exaggerated) rumors did not realize it, either.
With all of the rebellious uprisings stamped out, Arvis traveled to the surrounding countries of Silesse, located to the north; and Leonster, located to the east; and subjugated them. They no longer had proper leaders, so conquering them was easier than taking candy from a baby. With those final acts, the Kingdom of Grannvale succeeded in obtaining hegemony of the entire Judgralian continent.
King Azmur of Grannvale was on death's door, leading Arvis to immediately become the first emperor of the Grannvalian Empire, as if it had already been decided.
No one objected to his ascension. In fact, everyone overwhelmingly supported it. Arvis’ popularity among the commoners was particularly unusual, but it was because they had long wished for a strong, intelligent leader.
As they did not know the true meaning of the Battle of Belhalla, they could not view Arvis, who'd suppressed the rebellion, as anyone but the rightful king.
Arvis was a very ambitious man, who had long wished to unify the continent and become the first emperor of Grannvale. And upon fulfilling that wish, he moved on to a new ambition - etching his name into history as an extraordinarily benevolent ruler.
Arvis established laws guaranteeing the commoners their rights, while making the nobles unable to do whatever selfish things they wished with their territories.
The Loptr Church, previously oppressed as a cult, had contributed greatly to Arvis' victory. Arvis, in truth, had not only the blood of a Crusader flowing through his veins, but also that of the Loptr Church's founder, Archbishop Gale. For that reason, the church secretly supported him. For their efforts, once Arvis gained the authority to do so, he publicly recognized them for the first time in 220 years.
However, he did not allow them anything more than that, nor did he give their current leader, Archbishop Manfroy, a say in the government.
In the beginning of his reign, Arvis was an ideal leader for the people.
-
And so, seventeen years passed.
The Battle of Belhalla became just like any other historical event, and the story appeared to be over.
However, it was still being written in silence.
Fine Grannvalian wines rest within a barrel for ten long years, slowly maturing. This story is like one of those fine wines. It continued to mature, simply evading the eyes of the people during those ten long years.
The first sign was that the Loptr Church slowly began to influence our story. In the Miletos region, the church revived the rituals sacrificing children to the Dark God Loptous, once carried out during the Loptrian Empire. This was in spite of Emperor Arvis strongly prohibiting them...
Next, the kings of the remote regions slowly began to ignore the laws Arvis had established. Having observed the Loptr Church’s behavior, they thought the emperor had lost his authority.
The kings levied high taxes on the commoners and punished them without trial, all while indulging in hedonistic lifestyles.
This marked the beginning of the end for our story. However, neither the commoners (nor the kings) realized that yet. The commoners simply blamed the kings and Loptr Church as the cause for their hardships, and hoped for a savior that would change it all.
Then, their previous opinions of the rebel Sigurd changed.
His image was originally that of a man who always stood as the leader of his army on the front line, bathing his entire body in the blood of his enemies. He was known as "Blood-Soaked Sigurd," the terrifying rebel. However, at some point, he became "Sigurd, the man who knows no fear," and the epitome of bravery. The new stories passed around were those of his kindness.
They told many examples of the times in-between battle when he'd shown endless compassion towards his subordinates and the people, representing everything they wanted from their new savior.
"That’s right! Sigurd is a man who stood up for the people, and is the true hero!" They thought.
At the same time, a rumor circulated that Sigurd had a son named Seliph, who was growing into a fine young man.
"Where is he?"
"In a hidden village in a remote region of Isaach!"
"He is the one who will save us! I know it!"
"Let's gather everyone who can fight, and go to Isaach to join his army!"
"I heard that Lord Seliph's army already chased the imperial army out of Isaach!"
"Then let's start our own rebellion! If we do, I bet they'll come help us!"
The rumors were indeed just rumors, and reality was quite different.
It was true that Sigurd's son Seliph was living in a small Isaachian town called Tirnanog, and was learning how to fight in preparation for the day he knew would come. However, he viewed it as a day that was still very far off (though he knew it would come). It was also more accurate to say that he still wasn't prepared for a rebellion yet at all.
He had two teachers, one who taught him tactics, and another who taught him swordsmanship.
His tactics teacher was Oifey, who was both a knight and a tactician.
The members of Oifey's family had served each generation of House Chalphy as their tacticians. He was still only fourteen when Sigurd’s battles began, but insisted Sigurd allow him to come along, and Sigurd agreed (under the condition that he not step foot on the battlefield). He'd been confident that his studies would undoubtedly be helpful to Sigurd.
Seliph’s other teacher was Prince Shannan of Isaach. Shannan was a descendant of Sword Saint Od, one of the Twelve Crusaders, and was the next in line to inherit the Divine Blade Balmung.
Tumblr media
Isaach had fallen when Grannvale invaded during Shannan's childhood, and Balmung had been lost at that time. Afterwards, his young aunt, Ayra, guided him through a series of unfortunate events, leading them to be captured in The Kingdom of Verdane, then saved by Sigurd.
Before The Battle of Belhalla, Sigurd had entrusted Seliph to Oifey, and ordered him, along with Shannan, to leave the battlefield. While traveling, Oifey and Shannan learned of Sigurd's loss at Belhalla, and after they rediscussed their plans, they changed their destination to Isaach. Ever since then, the three of them had been avoiding the Empire's search parties, leading them to settle in Tirnanog, located near the northern tip of Isaach.
Sigurd suspected that he might die, and chose arguably the best teachers in the world for his son.
They were both prodigies and had a strong sense of duty.
They believed that the only way to repay their gratitude to Sigurd, and clear Sigurd’s regrets, was to raise Seliph to become a warrior fit to be called a descendant of Crusader Baldur. The Holy Weapons could not be used by all of the people of the Crusader’s bloodlines, but only by one person in each generation. Whether or not a person was the chosen one and could wield their bloodline’s Holy Weapon, was sometimes recognized at birth, but sometimes unknown until the moment they first touched it. The moment they did so, they would feel warmth course through their entire body, and be filled with a mysterious power. After that, they could display the power of their Holy Weapon, a great power that should be feared.
House Chalphy's Holy Weapon, the Holy Sword Tyrfing, was currently lost (it had likely fallen into the hands of Emperor Arvis). Still, both Shannan and Oifey agreed that they should prepare a powerful enough army to take the sword back.
Seliph had inherited his bright blue hair from his father, but recently, his expressions, gestures, and manner of speaking were also all shockingly similar to Sigurd's.
And his swordplay was improving at an incredible rate.
"Seliph, there's no question that you are the inheritor to Tyrfing." Both Shannan and Oifey had said this to him countless times now.
In addition to those two, though he wasn't exactly a teacher, another man occasionally visited Tirnanog, and kept Seliph updated on current events.
His name was Lewyn. He was a descendant of the Crusader Wind Mage Ced, Prince of Silesse, and inheritor to the Holy Wind Tome Forseti.
Lewyn had fought alongside Sigurd and participated in The Battle of Belhalla, so they'd long thought that he'd met the same fate as his other allies on that day.  However, roughly two years prior, he'd shown up at their house without any warning whatsoever..
He wore the same bard's clothing he'd had since long ago. His expression, specifically the shape of his forehead and eyebrows, looked a bit more prudent, but otherwise, he wasn't any different from the Lewyn Shannan and Oifey remembered.
Once they'd introduced themselves to each other, Seliph begged Lewyn to tell him stories of his father. Lewyn stared off into space, likely picturing his bygone days with Sigurd in his head, then started to speak.
"He always fought like a demon, and led the charge, striking fear in the hearts of his enemies while simultaneously inspiring his allies.
“However, that didn't mean he liked fighting. He was always considering whether or not he could solve things without fighting. Anyone who was beside him, knew very well about those worries.
“On the other hand, once he'd made the decision to fight, he always led his army and charged straight into the enemy lines. He would make the enemies’ blades swing towards him. He was trying to push himself to the boundary between life and death, where he couldn’t afford to have worries or doubts, and he was also gathering the enemies around him to try to lessen the injuries his allies suffered, even if only just a little.
“In summary, as I said before, he inspired his allies, struck fear in the hearts of his enemies, and his battles always ended in victory."
"May I ask one thing?" Oifey asked nervously.
“What is it?”
"What happened at The Battle of Belhalla?"
"It was no battle.” Lewyn hissed.
"It wasn't?"
"It was a surprise attack, and a massacre."
They all gasped at Lewyn’s unexpected words.
"After our long fight was finally over, we crossed the Aed Desert, and attacked Grannvale. Our first destination was Velthomer, as we'd received word that Reptor, leading the Friegian Army, was waiting there for us. It was supposed to be a very difficult battle. Instead, by the time we made it to the battlefield, Reptor's army was already in chaos. Arvis' army had attacked them from behind.
“We didn't have any idea what was going on, but we still attacked Reptor's army. After being betrayed by their allies, they didn't last long, and were quickly destroyed.
“Afterwards, General Aida, who had led Arvis' army during that battle, approached Sigurd, and said, ‘Lord Sigurd, you and Duke Byron have been cleared of all accounts of treason. We knew that everything, including Prince Kurth's assassination, was all plotted by Duke Reptor. King Azmur said that he would like to apologize to you for the misunderstanding, and propose a ceasefire, if you and your allies would just come to Belhalla.’
“Anti-war Sigurd happily accepted the proposal. Because they'd watched Arvis' army attack Reptor, the thought didn't even cross his mind that she could be lying. So much so, that he told everyone in his army from other countries that they could return home if they wished.
"Three days later, we reached Belhalla Field. The Grannvalian Army was lined up in front of the castle to greet us.
“‘There's way too many people here.’ I told Sigurd.
“Sigurd nodded, stopped his horse, and turned around to face everyone.
“‘If we move towards the palace in a large unit, then we will invite another misunderstanding. I’ve decided that the army will stay here, and only a limited number of people will accompany me during my audience with the emperor.’
“I immediately realized that Sigurd had misunderstood the meaning of what I'd said. I wasn't referring to the number of our allies, but the number of Grannvalian soldiers. However, I realized later that Sigurd had already known. That’s why he had his unit stay far behind him, so they could quickly escape when the time came.
“And so, just under twenty people proceeded between the two lines of the Grannvalian Army. Among them, Shannan, was your Aunt Ayra. Her beloved, Lex of House Dozel, was with her. And I was there with my beloved. Ayra and Lex walked next to each other, and my beloved and I were looking at each other the entire time. We both knew. We knew it was the last time we'd ever see each other.
“The other couples had known that as well - Princess Lachesis and the free knight Beowulf, Princess Tailtiu and Prince Azel, the dancer Silvia and High Priest Claud, Princess Aideen and Prince Jamke, and Princess Brigid and the archer Midir… they all tried to enjoy the little time they had left, and not spoil it with fears over what was to come.
“At the end of the long lines of soldiers waited not King Azmur, but Arvis.
“Arvis then gave his entire army the order. ‘Capture the traitor Sigurd, and his party! There is no need to take them in alive! Execute them on the spot!’
“The elite of Arvis' army all attacked us at once. The mages stationed on the hills surrounding us also rained down burning meteors on us.
“You probably understand now why I said that the Battle of Belhalla was no battle."
Everything Lewyn had shared was true, however, he'd left out one detail for Seliph's sake.
And that was that King Azmur's granddaughter had shown herself at Arvis' side for a brief moment. She was not only the princess of Grannvale, but also Deirdre, Sigurd's wife and Seliph’s mother, who'd gone missing two years prior. She appeared to have lost all memory of her past for an unknown reason. Otherwise, she never would have betrayed Sigurd. They'd met while Sigurd was fighting in the Kingdom of Verdane, and fallen in love at first sight.
Afterwards, she and Arvis went on to have twins, a boy and a girl. The older one, the boy, was Crown Prince Julius of the Grannvalian Empire, and Seliph's younger brother from a different father.
Though Lewyn had finished his story, no one could speak for a long time.
Finally, Seliph declared, "I cannot forgive Arvis for what he did! I hate fighting, just as my father did. But Arvis is the one person I cannot forgive."
"You've helped me make up my mind too, Seliph. I hate him! He killed my lord! When you raise your army, I intend to dedicate my life to you." Oifey said.
"I can't forgive him, either! He is Lord Sigurd and my aunt's murderer, so I will kill him!" Shannan yelled.
And so, another story began.
The writers of this new story were bathed in a light that shined so brightly, there wasn't a person alive who wouldn't soon learn of them. Meanwhile, the writers of a hidden story were buried deep within darkness, so that no one would learn of them...
Ok, now I’m chapter 66 of Heaven Official’s Blessing and I’ll put my ramblings under the cut because of spoilers (btw, thank you for the likes, reblogs and comments in the other posts!  ❤️❤️❤️)
Shi Qingxuan: “no matter how good the intention, after being passed around, words will always end up becoming negative
Me: well, that’s because the heavenly court is full of morons... actually, it makes sense considering that they’re a bunch of, in general, privileged and self-entitled rich people with a mass communication device.... oh shit, the Heavenly Court is like Gossip Girl.
Me before: Qi Rong went insane because Xie Lian fell.
Novel: Nah fam, he’s always been a crazy psycho and a bully.
Me:...oh, ok.
I have to say, I feel MUCH less charitable towards him than before. Insulting the people at the top is hilarious, insulting the ones beneath you makes you a bully (and he’s not a bully, he’s a full psycho).
And about that, something that called my attention was that in chapter 1 it says that Xian Le fell to chaos because of the Emperor’s cruel governing; I was like ‘Xie Lian’s father is a cruel Emperor...?’ I thought it was odd (Xie Lian seemed to have a good relationship with his parents, so how could he get along with them if the Emperor is cruel while he wants to help the common people??), so I considered the possibility that the Emperor when Xian Len fell was Qi Rong and not Xie Lian’s father and that Qi Rong governed a la Joffrey, but then XL’s parents would have to die within 3 years after Xie Lian ascended. I still think that’s a possibility, but the other chapters also show that Xie Lian did NOT get along with his father because of opposing views regarding royalty and the common people (his dad is a fucking snob), and details about Xian Le shows that the state of the country COULD lead to a rebellion, even with Xie Lian’s dad as the Emperor. I mean, when I read in chapter 1 about the golden carriages and lavish parade, I was like ‘if the country was so rich, why did the people rebel?’ and then these chapters show that while the nobility and royalty have this HUGE amount of wealth, there are still people living in the slums, in poverty or homeless... I mean, the disparity in wealth is shown to be so deep (the description of the royal palace in comparison to the nearby slums makes you go yikes) that it makes sense that people would grow increasingly dissatisfied. And actually, I was like ‘....is Xie Lian ok with this?’ but then we find out that he did NOT agree with his father’s ruling, but could not do anything against the king --> but I’m not sure if staying away was the right choice...
And about the Crown Prince Xie Lian, I have to say, the author did an amazing job of portraying how different Xie Lian was when he was Crown Prince; I mean, yeah, he was “woker” and more humble/down-to-earth than the rest of the nobility but certain details made evident that despite that, his view of the world was still coming from a sheltered and rich young master. Like on the one hand, his understanding of the difference between his and Mu Qing’s privilege when he decided to cover him for the gold foil was fantastic, or him taking responsibility for all damages made by Qi Rong (including economic losses from vendors) was great. But on the other hand...
Novel: he didn’t bring a lot with him. Only 200 treasured swords.
Me:
Tumblr media
Or when he was looking for sweets to give the poor children because he thought that giving them coins was too much like dismissing beggars and he thought it was inappropriate --> I have to say I was like ‘fuck your candies, Xie Lian! if I were poor/homeless, I would WANT you to dismiss me with your golden coins!!’
I mean, he was nice and humble, and was much better than the rest of the rich people when it comes to helping and understanding the common people, BUT his view was still one that came from someone who grew up being rich and royalty (something he couldn’t help since he was the crown prince in a country like Xian Le, but those details are very interesting, as that trait is not present in the current Xie Lian).
Jun Wu: “in this matter, you really worked hard for nothing, and pleased no one” --> FUCK YOU!! he saved the (rest of the) common people of Xian Le, he avoided them being killed or facing a new wave of discrimination, he avoided clashes and he contributed to the peace in the region, so fuck that ‘worked hard for nothing’ you snake (and this is why Xie Lian needs to elope with Hua Cheng and be done with the fucking heavenly court).
And if he sent Xie Lian because he’s the “only one he trusts” why didn’t tell him “hey the one that disappeared was the Earth Master and I’d sent him to be Hua Cheng’s subordinate as a spy, so Hua Cheng is probably involved” instead of just fucking sending him blindly to the Ghost City??? suspicious... And I love how every time Jun Wu tells him to be wary of Hua Cheng, Xie Lian is like ‘I suddenly can’t hear’ lol.
And thinking about Jun Wu's possible motive to have Xie Lian fail/fall, it called my attention that in Xian Le, the second-highest temple, after Jun Wu’s, was Xie Lian’s (and he only ascended for 3 years...), and I keep thinking that maybe he felt threatened by Xie Lie?? I mean, Xie Lian was suuuper popular and talented (he only cultivated for 2 years before ascending??) and he “disrespected” his parade and refused to apologize because, in XL’s view, he did the right thing, I mean when I read in chapter 1 “Then the Heavens would be the ones who are wrong. Why should the people who are right apologize to the ones who are wrong?” I was like ‘he’s totally right but damn, that’s a gutsy answer’, so I think Jun Wu saw Xie Lian as a powerful (lots of believers) young god who he could not control (or was not respectful enough) and may surpass him and said ‘hell no, he needs to be beaten’ and did it in a covert way while pretending to support him (....and totally not because I was watching old American Next Top Model’s videos and reading comments about how Tyra usually downplays/criticizes the girls that are more beautiful than her because she feels intimidated while pretending to be nice, and that made me think of Jun Wu as Tyra >_>....)
Sasha’s path in season 2
Y'know, I didn't mean for this kinda thing to be the focus of this blog. I wanted to primarily talk about video games and maybe bring up comics and movies every once in a while. I had no intention of turning this into a cartoon discussion blog, but this is where we are, so let's talk about Amphibia.
Tumblr media
Amphibia is a new Disney Channel cartoon about three young girls being transported to a world of talking frogs. The series follows only one of the girls, Anne, who was taken in by a family of Frogs named the Plantars, as she tries to find a way back home. It's basically one of the few Western Isaki shows.
For reasons known only to the mad and the divine, Disney decided to air the entire season all at once; with a new episode every day for five weeks. So the finale's already come and gone. And it was quite a ride. After spending months in the small village of Wartwood, Anne is finally reunited with her best friend from Earth, Sasha...Only to find out Sasha came to Wartwood with an army of toads.
The toads actually trick all of Wartwood in come to their homebase just to kill Hop Pop for inadvertently starting a rebellion by standing up to the toads that have come to Wartwood over the course of the season.
Tumblr media
As the series goes on, Sasha is revealed to be a pretty terrible person. Manipulating and coercing Anne to do things she didn’t want to on Earth, and teaching Grime to do the same to his soldiers so they’ll fight harder for him. The plan to trick Wartwood was actually her’s.
But at the end, Anne finally stands up to Sasha, frees Hop Pop and Wartwood, and destroys the Toad Tower. (Although she didn’t actually want that to happen and one of the less stable frogs planted explosives against her orders not to do so)
The Tower going down causes Sasha to almost fall from the roof and Anne and the Planters try to save her. Even though, like I said, Sasha came up with the plan to kill Hop Pop in the first place. Sasha seeing the Plantars doing so much to save Anne makes her realize she’s been a shitty friend, and her actions have directly put her friend in mortal danger.
It’s interesting that, despite seemingly taking advantage of Anne for most, if not the entirety of their relationship, it’s made very clear that Sasha does genuinely care about Anne’s wellbeing and happiness. She just thinks she knows better than Anne on what that actually is and forces her to do things she wouldn’t want to do ordinarily. But as they are dangling from the top of the tower, Sasha has a moment of clarity; realizing being a real friend means putting your own feelings aside for the sake of your friend. Saying to Anne, “Maybe you’re better off without me.”
And to atone for everything she’s done to Anne, especially in the last few hours, Sasha let’s herself fall so the Plantars can pull Anne to safety.
Tumblr media
Really think about that. A thirteen year old girl was willing to let herself die after realizing what a shitty person she is. But the thing that makes this particular plot point interesting, is that Sasha doesn’t die.
I mean she’s a child and this is Disney, there was no way Sasha was going to die, especially in the first season. So Grime comes out of fucking nowhere and saves her. And before walking away with the rest of his Toad army, he gives Anne a dirty look, unquestioningly think that Anne THREW her off the tower. See, just like Sasha actually cares about Anne despite how she treats her, Grime cares about Sasha despite being a tyrannical warlord.
So, like I said, the season finale was a bit of a ride. It ends with Anne emotionally drained after seeing her oldest friend almost dying for her, and fairly certain that nothing will ever be the same between them. But fully prepared to venture outside of Wartwood with the Plantars to find a way home.
Tumblr media
Anne’s path forward is pretty firmly established, but the big question is where Sasha will go from here. The most hopeful course of action would be for Sasha to take the revelations she’s experienced to heart and strive to be a better person. Leaving Grime and the toads to reunite with Anne and the Plantars on more humble and peaceful terms. And had this series come out when I was a kid, I’d expect this to be the how everything would play out. But this is a Post-Avatar world we’re living in. It’s not out of the ordinary any more for cartoons aimed at kids to take darker turns in it’s storytelling.
Speaking of Avatar, I feel like Sasha may go through a similar situation as Zuko at the end of Book two when he freed Appa to help Aang, doing something that went against the very core of who he was as a person. Sasha doing something so uncharacteristically selfless as letting herself die for Anne when their relationship up until that point was so monumentally one sided, it will undoubtedly result in the same existential crisis that Zuko went through. Though...maybe not with the day long coma and the fever dreams.
Tumblr media
But while Zuko at his core was a good person, doing morally questionable thing because of a misguided sense of honor and a desire to get back in his abusive father’s good graces. Sasha, at least at present, doesn’t seem like a good person. Being manipulative and amoral, with her only real redeeming quality being her genuine friendship with Anne. And well...Anne and Sasha aren’t exactly friends anymore.
The main reason Sasha sided with Grime was because of a promise for the toads to help her find Anne and their other friend Marcie, who by the end of the season is still missing. But not only does Sasha not seem to take any issue with the fucked up things Grime wants to do, she’s the one who came up with the plan to murder Hop Pop for a purpose she has absolutely no stake in. She has no reason to help the Toads keep their iron grip on the Valley, but she does it anyway, and even takes advantage of the trust Anne has garnered from the frogs of Wartwood to set her trap in the first place.
So while Sasha face-heeling would make sense in the context of realizing she’s been a cunt to her best friend, it would make just as much sense for Sasha to double down on her actions and gradually becomes a worse and worse person as the story goes on.
It’s also a factor that now Grime knows how to better manipulate people thanks to Sasha. It would make sense for Grime to twist the events of the finale to frame Sasha in the right, and lead her to continue on her already set path, and preface all the terrible things she continues to do as the ends justifying the means. Yes, she’s hurting innocent people, but if it means getting Anne and Marcie back to Earth in one piece, she’s willing to do it. She may not like who she’s becoming, but if it’s for her friends it’s worth it.
In this sense, Sasha learns from her near death experience that a friend should give of themselves, and do things you may not want to for the sake of your friend. The problem comes in how she goes about that. To her, Grime and the Toads are the best chance she has to find a way back home, so it’d be easy for her to rationalize continuing to work for them. She may not like what she’s doing anymore, but she’s doing it for Anne and Marcie.
There’s also the thematic element of setting Anne and Sasha up as character foils to take into account. Anne started off as selfish and a bit of a brat, but through the various adventures she’s had with Sprig and the various other frogs of Wartwood, she’s grown as a person and become more thoughtful and compassionate. She’s actually saved the town more than once during the three months she’s been in Amphibia, and it all culminates in the penultimate episode of the season, Anne of the Year. Where all of Wartwood celebrates how far Anne has come since she arrived.
Sasha, on the other hand, was held captive by the Toads for months until she helped Grime protect their tower from giant Herons and taught him how to get the best out of his subordinates with empty flattery. When Grime give Sasha the offer to become his second in command she relishes the idea of gaining enough power to basically do whatever she wanted.
The longer they stayed in Amphibia Anne became more of a hero, while Sasha became more of a villain. Anne will most likely continue to grow as a person, and the more she and the Plantars explore the Valley, especially with the whole “Hop Pop is the face the rebellion” plotline, there is almost certainly going to more instances where Anne will have to defend more towns from Grime’s army. Spreading stories of the strange, tall, gangly creature with a sword standing up against the Toads. While also putting her in direct conflict with Grime and Sasha.
Is Sasha still going to fight Anne to save Anne? Will she come to the decision that the best what to keep Anne safe until she can find a way home is to keep her prisoner? After all the only reason Anne was in danger at Toad Tower was because she left her sight.
And what if Sasha decides Grime isn’t doing enough to figure out how to get her home, and takes control of the Toad army away from him. I mean the toads already like her more than Grime, it wouldn’t be that hard for Sasha to convince them to make her their leader despite her age. And as he’s being led away to be either exiled or executed, Sasha says to him, “I bet you wish you hadn’t save now.”
Am I seriously suggesting Disney make a cartoon where a teenage girl both becomes the main villain and develops a death wish?
Tumblr media
When Sasha let go of Anne’s hand at the top of the tower, she wasn’t just willing to die, she was expecting to die. Grime saving her means she’ll have to deal with that...and for a thirteen year old girl, that’s not going to be easy. It’s going to fuck her up emotionally and mentally, and it’ll only get worse if she does go full darkside.
A huge wild card in the story is Marcie. So far we don’t know where she is, what she’s doing, how she’s going to be introduced. There is basically no information on this character or what her relationship with Anne and Sasha is. We know she was the one who brought the Music Box to Sasha and Anne’s attention, and she was probably just as manipulative as Sasha is. But since we don’t know what Marcie’s been going through, we don’t know how she’ll react to the changes in both Anne and Sasha or if she’ll side with one, the other, or stay as an independent entity.
Amphibia is a surprisingly good show so far. Which isn’t too surprising considering the guy who made it also worked on Gravity Falls. It will be a matter of time before we can say with any kind of confidence that it will be remembered as one of the highlights of modern cartoons...but it seems like a safe bet. Especially with how the first season ended and what it sets up. It’s entirely possible I’m talking out of my ass on this one. Nothing that I proposed will come to be, and Sasha will just become one of the good guys. But the fact that Amphibia built it’s characters so well I could have this kind of discussion and not have it seem like absolute bullshit, that’s saying something. This show has a lot of potential. And I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.
You'd been confused ever since you met that rebel. Why did he think you were a murderer just from looking at you? Had you looked too angry? Sure, you'd been a little upset that he was about to hurt the group of stormtroopers you were overseeing, but you thought you were fairly calm about it.
Maybe you shouldn't have taken out your blaster. You hadn't intended to use it unless you really had to.
But he had his blaster, too, and you'd heard stories of the Resistance. He was far more likely to happily kill you, so why was he calling you a murderer?
It had been a couple weeks since you met him and you still wondered why he had made such baseless assumptions about you. You found yourself unable to concentrate on your duties, you were thinking about it so much.
So when you were doing checks and saw the rebel being dragged into the base — for questioning, you'd been told when you asked a trooper — you decided that you would pay him a visit. If others were questioning him, you could, too.
General Hux was more than pleased that you would be joining their efforts, not even hesitating to give you access to the room they were keeping the man in.
It was very dark and very quiet when you entered. He was strapped to a device, just barely gazing up at you, looking like it took all his strength not to simply pass out.
"I tell them to try harder and they send in you?" His words were slurred with what sounded like pain and exhaustion. "I knew you weren't all innocent."
"I came to question you, just like them." You kept your distance, just in case, and didn't notice his look of bewilderment. "Why did you call me a murderer? And a monster?"
He stared for a brief moment. "Because I know firsthand everything the First Order is capable of. I know that it takes someone evil to be a part of this."
"I've been taught all my life that the Resistance and rebellion are the evil ones. We want peace over the galaxy, while you thrive on its chaos."
"—you really think they're just questioning me?"
"Yes."
"Come here."
You shrank in on yourself a little, eyeing him cautiously. "I don't think that would be wise."
"I'm strapped down tight. I can't do anything to you." He shook his arms to show that the metal around his wrists was secure.
Biting your lip, you nodded slightly and started towards him, stopping with some space still between the two of you. "Why am I here—" Your words ended with a gasp as he tilted his head forward, allowing you to see the bleeding injuries on his face. Was he trying to imply that this was done to him? "You...you've hurt yourself."
"No. No, you know the truth, I can see it." He let you see his bleeding temple, which had you frowning in sympathy. "They're questioning me, yeah, with a little extra encouragement added in. You know why?"
You opened your mouth and then shut it upon realizing that no one had actually told you what they wanted him to tell them. "No."
"They want to know where the map to Luke Skywalker is. So they can find him and kill him, and rid the galaxy of Jedi."
"No! That—" You hesitated. Why would your colleagues want Luke Skywalker? You knew the Jedi were bad and that he would never join your side, so if they weren't going to get him to join you, then...
You shouldn't have come in to question him, because now you were even more confused.
"They're good...they wouldn't..." Yes, some members of your group were a little overzealous, but did that mean they were cruel? That murder was easy for them? You recalled one day when you had witnessed General Hux's anger, but that had been far different.
"You really don't know, do you, kid?" His voice was full of wonder; tired eyes full of complete perplexity. "You've really never killed anyone?"
"No. No! I just want peace. I thought that was what we all wanted." You looked down at your feet, berating yourself for second guessing all you had grown up with, and the man stared at you.
"I'm about to put a lot of trust in you, so if it turns out that you're lying to me and you're some evil mastermind, I'm gonna be really pissed off." He waited until you curiously met his gaze before continuing, "My name is Poe Dameron. I'm a pilot for the Resistance, and we want peace. We only kill if we have to — like you were going to when you saw me going after those stormtroopers. The First Order has been manipulating the hell out of you. They're the ones who make chaos, they're the ones who kill without a second thought, they're the ones who want to take over the galaxy, and they're the ones who want everyone to be like them."
You shook your head. "You're lying to me."
His eyes were too honest. Too honest. Why couldn't there be a flicker of doubt or malice in them? Then you could have hope that he was lying and that your whole upbringing hadn't been manipulated.
"I'm not. Look, if you let me out of here, I'll take you with me." His tone was also honest and that only made your fears grow.
Your fear also felt like some strange hope you hadn't realized you needed, and that feeling had you eyeing his restraints. You felt like you were floating closer, touching the metal and then his hand.
But it was all too much. To be told that everything you knew was a lie was far too much and seemed like it was an easy lie, and you felt too scared to set him free.
"I'm sorry." You had never held anyone's hand before. Was that some wrong thing that only happened when you were part of the First Order? Did members of the Resistance hold each other's hands? You forced yourself to pull yours away from his, even though it was warm and the kind touch relaxed you both.
"Especially if you're telling the truth, but I...I cannot risk losing everything I have for a man I should be against." You swiftly turned and made your way to the door.
"Do you have a name?" His question made you pause, but you didn't turn. "Or are you not worth a human name? Are you Officer Number 107 or something?" You couldn't tell if he was curious or taunting.
"I...I shouldn't tell you."
"Come on, I told you mine. I told you the truth. The least you could do is tell me your name."
It was a simple request from a possibly honest man. All he wanted was your name.
There were so many thoughts swirling through your head that you didn't tell him, instead running out of the room and leaving him alone.
Your confusion was strong, but your newfound suspicion was stronger.
You should have forgotten what Poe said. He could have easily been lying to you, but he sounded so truthful.
And now you were watching your colleagues closer. You noticed how quick their tempers were, how the stormtroopers got in trouble for the smallest mistakes, how they spoke of rule and power, how General Hux had ordered a group of troopers to 'strike down anything that speaks against us' before he sent them off to a planet.
That one had scared you the most. It made everything you were told seem especially true, and you didn't know how to deny it.
You felt so...lost. Everything you were taught, everything you knew was steadily crumbling around you. All you wanted was peace and you thought that was the First Order's goal, that the Resistance was full of true evil, but it suddenly all felt wrong.
You were wandering down a corridor rather aimlessly a couple days after your forced epiphany when you nearly walked right into a stormtrooper and Poe Dameron.
"Oh! Uh...officer—"
"FN-2187." The name-that-wasn't-actually-a-name felt wrong after Poe's comment of 'not being worth a human name'. Poe seemed impressed by the fact that you knew who it was so quickly, but you meant it when you said they were your friends and not your subordinates. "What are you doing?"
"I was just...uh..."
"He's not going to be executed, is he?" You said the words before you could stop yourself, eyes widening. That was never something you would have assumed would happen before.
"No. I'm...transporting him. Yeah, yeah, that's good."
"What?"
"—I'm transporting him."
It didn't take a genius to know what he was doing. FN-2187 had always been a bit hesitant when it came to his duties — you understood why now — so it was easy to figure out that he was leaving. That he was probably going to join the prisoner, whose words were probably true, and whose world was probably better for him.
You could have gotten General Hux. You could have been a good officer, done what was right, and helped your good cause.
But your cause seemed to be selfish now. Cruelty hidden beneath convincing words to get its way.
Your heart pounded at the thought of turning them in. You were afraid they might be killed if you told someone, and you were also afraid that you were defecting. At least on the inside, as truly defecting seemed like a terrifying thing to do.
"You had better transport him fast. You know how the general feels about wasting time." You spoke softly, purposefully, to let them know that they were safe.
"Yes, ma'am." The relief and appreciation in FN-2187's voice was as clear as the surprise and slight fondness in Poe's eyes. "You could come with us."
"No, I couldn't." Your response was immediate. You couldn't because you were scared of getting caught, and you couldn't because what if it really was some intricate lie? What if you ended up in the hands of a group more sinister than the one yours was described as just a couple days before?
"Thank you." That was Poe, looking at you gratefully as FN-2187 continued to lead him down the hallway.
You watched them walk, for a second, before you became overwhelmed with the need to tell him something. You weren't sure why, but it seemed important that he know. "Y/N."
"Huh?" He looked over his shoulder.
"My name. I do have one. It's Y/N."
"Y/N." The way he said your name — with this little smile that you found charming, which was odd since you'd never stopped to find a smile charming before — made you feel human in a way that you didn't realize you hadn't felt. You had a name, unlike stormtroopers, but you were so used to only hearing your surname, and it was always out of respect or right before you were given some order. "Thank you, Y/N."
You watched them go with a pang of regret, but your fear was enough to keep you from going after them. Even if your world was a lie, you weren't meant for something different when it was such a risk.
Poe Dameron didn't know you, anyway. He would forget. And FN-2187 would likely have a life more suited to him, and be happier out there. They didn't really need you along for the ride just to give you possible freedom.
What you didn't know was that, as Poe made his escape, your name kept repeating in his head, over and over. It was a name he'd heard before, so why the hell did it seem so beautiful now that he associated it with a First Order officer? Sure, you were surrounded by evil and somehow existed without a hint of malice, but you were part of the First Order. You were his enemy.
But, stars, that name really never had been so beautiful before.
Neither of you would be forgetting each other any time soon, you thinking of the kind rebel that said your name like it was gold, and Poe thinking of the gorgeous name that belonged to a woman who was benevolent against all odds.
A connection was formed before either of you would realize it. You both assumed you wouldn't meet again.
You were both wrong.
They all end up in theROOT base made from one of Tobirama’s old labs and instead of Kyuubi gettingloose Team Ro, the Fourth Hokage’s team of bodyguards, Obito, Anko, and all ofROOT plus Danzo himself get dumped into the Warring Clans Era. Obito killsDanzo in a panic when he realizes that taking the Bijuu means killing Rin,Kakashi sacrifices himself again, and there is a lot more running around. A Fire to Beat Back the Dark, Chapter 2
Hey, less than a month between chapters. That’s pretty good for me.
...
Yes, I know, I need to work on that.
Anyway, read on to see the Rebellion’s introduction to defector-from-the-Horde Catra and see Adora and Catra get some Shadow Weaver closure. ~3,000 words.
Chapter 1 here.
Chapter below the cut. Link to AO3 version through here.
By the time the trio arrived at Bright Moon about an hour before dawn, Bow and Glimmer had gone back to bed, letting others take over their watch duties. Queen Angella was awake, however, and willing to accept Adora telling her that the best place to update her on how the night's mission had gone was the edge of the Whispering Woods.
As they approached where Swift Wind and Catra had hidden themselves from easy view, the sound of a lively, if hushed, conversation could be heard. Adora could have sworn that the phrase 'beast-kin discrimination' was somewhere in there. She made a point to say something somewhat loud and largely pointless to Queen Angella, alerting the two of their arrival. By the time they were all in sight of each other, Catra had taken on the stance of a cadet awaiting an officer's displeasure, back straight and head bowed.
It was a pose Adora had seen her take countless times, often out of the corner of her eye while she did the same, but this was the first time she saw it and found herself wondering how much it hurt Catra's pride to take it. The subservience required of them as budding soldiers that had felt harsh but necessary at the time seemed much more cruel when applied to a Princess with fire in her heart, and whatever else they had been told, that was what Catra had always been. How bad of a friend had she been for not realizing how much it had hurt Catra sooner?
Still, the stance was the best choice for someone asking for permission to enter the castle she had led an attack on barely more than a month before, and Adora and Swift Wind flanking her helped give Catra credibility while she explained Hordak's displeasure with her and the actions that led her to coming into contact with the Black Garnet. A flame from her hand lit her face as she told the queen, “The Fright Zone is my home, more than I ever realized, and I want Hordak out of it.”
That was how Catra came to enter Bright Moon hidden under a hooded cloak to prevent panic in whoever might catch sight of her until she could present her case to the Rebellion at large.
---
“I have made contact with a previously unknown Princess who has connected with the Black Garnet,” Adora announced to the gathered rebels.
“Scorpia's not unknown,” said Frosta.
“It's not Scorpia.”
“Besides,” Glimmer said, “no one in Scorpia's family has ever been able to use the Black Garnet, not in any recorded history anyway.” She turned back to Adora “Where is she?”
“Nearby, but first you all have to understand. The only reason she was able to even get close to the Black Garnet at all is because she first worked her way far up into the Hoard's ranks.”
“Did you know her?” asked Perfuma.
“Will you vouch for her?” asked Frosta.
Adora bit her lip. “When I was in the Horde, there wasn't anyone I trusted more. Since I've joined the Rebellion… She would say we were stupid if we didn't keep a close eye on her.”
Bow and Glimmer looked uneasy. Adora had barely spoken to them over the course of the morning, saying that it was best to wait for the meeting to fill everyone in at once, but the two of them were going to put the pieces together quickly now.
Mermista was the first one to speak up. “At least she sounds honest. I like her already.”
Catra appeared through a well-concealed service door and walked up to stand by Adora. “I think that's as good as I'm going to get.”
Glimmer stood up, her hands on the table. “Catra?! Catra is the new Princess?!”
“Yeah,” Catra said holding her hands out. She let the flames build there until they were high enough that everyone at the table could clearly see them and her control of them. “It shocked me too.”
“And for the record, I don't know of any Horde tech that can do that. She's not faking.”
“Just so we're clear,” Perfuma said as Catra brought her hands together to smother the flames. “This is the same Catra who you once said would kill us all in front of you to make you suffer.”
“Wow, Adora, I don't know whether to be glad to hear you think I have the skills to pull that off or upset at your opinion of my morals.” Catra figured that pointing out that the gathered Rebellion members would be of more use to the Horde as hostages than martyrs wouldn't be useful at the moment.
“I'm just glad to hear you admit that you have morals.” Adora gave a wan smile. “I was describing a worst case scenario. You angry at me is always a worst case scenario.”
“Look, everyone, I know you all are going to be suspicious of me. I would be too. So here's something that may ease your minds a bit. This isn't actually a big priority shift for me. My plan was always to take control of the Fright Zone and the Horde away from Hordak. I may have been raised to be a Horde soldier, but I dream of never having to take orders from anyone ever again.”
Catra looked around the table, seeing her words sink in with the desired effect. For Adora that meant a look of grim understanding. For most of the others it meant a look of dawning realization. As children, they may have had to listen to their parents or other caretakers. In the years since, they may have agreed to plans that included taking direction from people with information or understanding that they lacked. But no one had ever, ever taken away their choice to say ‘No.’ The question ‘Why?’ had never been meet with ‘Because I said so,’ followed by the threat of punishment for their insolence. Every one of them was clearly thinking about how they would have chafed under being forced to live such a life. A few of them may have even moved on to realize that if Catra had come to them under any other circumstances, as anything other than a fellow Princess looking to take back her land, she would have been subordinate to them. However kindly or playfully worded, there had always been a chance that one of the Princesses would pull rank, making them no different from any Horde officer as far as she had been concerned.
She continued, “Before, the plan was to impress Hordak, and be such a good officer that he named me his successor, and no one would question it if he met an untimely end shortly after. But now, I have a claim that has nothing to do with Hordak, so instead of waiting to stab him in the back, I can go ahead and stab him in the front. And if you all help me do it… Well, that will make diplomatic relations between the Hoard and the Rebellion go a whole lot smoother afterwards. Won't it?”
“The main duty of any She-Ra is to maintain the harmony of Etheria by working with the Princesses, all of them. Being Catra's enemy confirmed something I already knew. That she is a highly capable combatant and the best tactician I know. I want her on our side. I need her on our side.”
“What about trust?” Glimmer asked.
“Trust can be earned.” Adora said.
“It's a bit hard to repair after it's been broken though,” said Catra, “but I'm willing to try if you are. I can probably get you Scorpia. Entrapta will be a harder sell.”
Perfuma's eyes widened. “Entrapta's alive?!”
“You didn't tell them? That's cold,” Catra said in Glimmer and Bow's direction before turning back to Perfuma. “Yeah, I found her crawling around in the ductwork two days after your rescue mission. Between the Horde's advanced technology and the First Ones' tech I've been swiping for her, I'm pretty sure she's never been happier. As long as she can keep making Hordak's machines work better than he can, she's his favorite.”
“We offered to rescue her,” Glimmer said. “She turned us down. And she's the one who froze the Whispering Woods.”
“She was really excited for the chance to 'hack the planet'. Now she's working on Hordak's portal technology along with weapon design.”
“A portal to what?” asked Bow.
“Where he came from as far as I can piece together. All I know about that is that he made a machine to mimic the air of the place to make some of his tech work better.” Thinking of the machine in action made her rub her throat at the memory. “And I can't breathe it.”
Silence hanging in the air for a moment until Frosta said, “If he wants to leave Etheria, that could solve most of our problems.”
“If he wants to bring in reinforcements, that could make things a lot worse for us,” said Bow.
“It's best if we stop him before he gets it working, and I'm not just saying that because I want to secure access to the Black Garnet,” said Catra.
“Yeah, and our last mission into the Fright Zone went so well,” said Mermista.
“See,” said Catra, “your problem then was that there are two people on Etheria who know the Fright Zone better than anyone else. Before, you only had one of them. Now, you have both. Plus, the Horde is now minus Shadow Weaver, and she was their only magic-user.”
Glimmer asked, “Does Hordak know you're here?”
“As far as anyone in the Horde knows, I'm chasing Shadow Weaver. With the deadline on me, it will morning after tomorrow before anyone should officially care where I am. The only person I talked to about the Black Garnet before I left was Scorpia, and she should have bought my story that I just hoped that whatever information she had about it might help me track our escaped prisoner. I still can't believe she came here.”
“Shadow Weaver knows she's in my head,” said Adora. “She just misjudged how. Maybe if she realized how many of my nightmares revolve around her, she wouldn't have thought breaking into my room in the middle of the night was such a good idea.”
“And you're the one she liked.”
“She thought I was a more useful tool. That's different.”
“So how exactly did Shadow Weaver go from second-in-command to prisoner? That sort of feels like a hole in your story,” said Glimmer.
“She kept devoting time and resources to bringing back Adora after Hordak told her to stop. That got her on his bad side. The breaking point was how she reacted to Entrapta experimenting with the Black Garnet. She felt that, because she had been the only one drawing power from it for years, it was hers. Hordak felt otherwise.”
“Yes,” said Castaspella as she entered the room, “whether she is called Shadow Weaver or Light Spinner, that woman does not like to give up power. I'm glad to know her days of terrorizing people are over.”
“Castaspella, this is Catra,” Adora said. “She was my friend in the Horde, and we just found out that she's the Princess linked to the Black Garnet.”
“With Shadow Weaver talents, she likely figured that out a very long time ago. I'm sure her attentions were very close and unpleasant.”
“To say the least,” said Catra.
“I want to get her behind proper magical wards as quickly as possible. I'm sure you both would rather see her leave instead of finding out that I spirited her away while you were in the middle of a meeting.” Casta's gaze drifted meaningfully to Queen Angella, who had, to this point been silently observing the proceedings.
Angella said, “Seeing as how this has turned from a simple weekly update to a potentially more complicated planning meeting, I suggest that we reconvene after a break, assuming that everyone is agreed to allowing Princess Catra to be part of our plans.”
Most of the voices that came from around the table were reluctant, others were grumbling, but none of them said no.
Adora placed a hand on Catra's shoulder. “Welcome to the Rebellion.”
---
Adora's hand was still there as the two walked into the room were Shadow Weaver was being guarded with Castaspella following behind them, though their expressions were considerably more somber.
“Ah, Catra,” Shadow Weaver purred. “I knew Adora would be able to capture you if she put her mind to it.”
“I wasn't captured,” Catra replied, stepping away from Adora's hand. “I asked to come here. I know why you sent her after me though. I think it's the same reason you've ever done anything to me. You were trying to stop this.” She snapped and a small flame sprouted from a single fingertip, causing Shadow Weaver to tense. Catra moved and leaned forward until the fire was within inches of the broken mask. “You spent my life terrorizing me trying to make sure that this never happened. Trying to make sure I would never be as powerful as I could be. I would be justified in anything I wanted to do to you.” She blew out the flame. “But you're not worth the energy. You spent all those years scared of a child who could take your power from you. That makes you too pathetic to hate.”
“I should have had you thrown out of the Horde as soon as I realized your link to the Black Garnet.” Shadow Weaver snapped. “Adora's fondness for you and Hordak's plans be damned. What could possibly be the point of keeping a hostage against the good behavior of the queen of an exiled people?”
Catra's breath hitched for the moment before she recovered, straightening her back. “Your baiting me. You may even be baiting me with the truth. The thing is, as of now, you haven't said anything I didn't already know or could have guessed, and you likely aren't the best place I could find out the rest for sure. In the past day, I've learned more about where I came from than from a lifetime of listening to you. You would think that the woman who taught me the story of 'The Lookout Who Cried Princess' would have been more careful with her lies.”
Adora stepped forward, taking Catra's hand for comfort. “You're our past. We survived you. Now we have bigger problems to deal with, and a better world to make.”
Castaspella seemed to take that as her cue. “Shadow Weaver, formerly known as Light Spinner, you are under arrest for providing aid to an enemy of Etheria and the gross mishandling of the education of two potential magic-users, among other crimes.” As she used a fine chain, shining with magic, to bind the fallen sorceress’s hands behind her back she said, “I only wish Micah was here to see this.”
Shadow Weaver turned to Catra one last time. “I look forward to hearing about the first thing you burn down. I'm sure it will be a spectacular conflagration and a complete accident.” With a final shove from Casta, they departed.
Adora and Catra watched as they, along with several other sorcerers that had arrived from Mystacor as part of the escort, disappeared around a turn in the corridor. Bow, Glimmer, and Angella, who had been waiting outside the doorway, watched with them.
“Are you both alright?” the queen asked.
Catra had been taking slow, deep breaths. “I don't suppose that there's a training ground around here where we could set something up for me to burn down and get it over with?”
Queen Angella gave a small smile. “I think we can arrange something.”
---
Catra looked out on the training ground where there stood a dozen wooden crosses that had been draped in black and red fabric, each topped with a stuffed sack that had been crudely painted with an unmistakable mask. “You made me a bunch of Shadow Weavers.” Bow must have worked like a man possessed to put together so many while the rest of them had eaten lunch. She had been expecting something more along the lines of a hastily assembled pile of scrap wood. This level of thought was surprisingly touching.
“And I stuffed them with the driest straw I could find. Seriously, I only spent a few hours last night guarding her, and that was enough to make me look forward to watching this. It's not my best work, but I figured this was a quantity over quality sort of job.”
“I officially apologize for that time I threw you off a cliff. I'm sure you think other stuff I did was worse, but that was business. Messing with you guys playing hostage was fun.”
“Hey could you make me one of these?” Glimmer asked. “I know a single torture session and a few days of lingering curse is kinda nothing compared to being raised by her, but she said some stuff about my dad last night, and I have some aggression to work out.”
“I'll let you have two of mine.”
Glimmer accepted the peace offering with a smile and summoned her staff.
“That could leave five for each of us,” Adora noted.
“You get four, I get six, and you let me torch what you leave behind.”
“Sounds fair.” She readied her sword while Catra summoned flames to both her fists.
Shadow Weaver was right about one thing. It was a spectacular conflagration.
hc; sparda 1
HISTORY
Sparda’s demon species is insectlike, and lays their young in dead large demons --- thousands of eggs at a time. These eggs hatch, and the young eat their way out of the corpse before beginning to cannibalize one another. The survivors of this feeding frenzy  find a dark and wet place to hide alone and enter a chrysalis state, in which they remain for a century before hatching properly as their fully grown selves.
Sparda is small for his species, only 9 feet or so tall, but he was one of the survivors of his brood. He, like all of them, chose his own name, and followed his own instinct to become stronger and gain more power. That is how his species lives, a constant quest for more, to gather power and continue evolving, until they reach their truest form and pinnacle and their mutable and ever changing form settles into a permanent one.
Sparda did this, eventually joining another power-hungry demon named Mundus as he amassed an army --- he had not the taste for conquest as the other man, only seeking power, but all the same, the two fought side by side for a long time.
It was only when Mundus declared his intent to attack the human world and subjugate it, just before Sparda would take his final form, that the young demon (only five hundred years post chrysalis, unlike Mundus’ nine hundred) took pause. He was a demon, but he had honor, and fighting and destroying those that were so helpless and weak didn’t sit right with him. Curious as to why Mundus wanted them under his thumb, he slipped through a rift in the human world and took a human guise, walking among them for a time to watch and investigate. He found these humans...fascinating, not at all like demons, with a capability for a great many things he had never seen in the Underworld, long and compassion and selflessness. He found...he didn’t want them to be subjugated, destroyed by Mundus’ hand. So he stood up to his former friend, and thus began a war.
Sparda never intended to start a war, or become the leader of an army, or fall into legend--- he wasn’t even fighting for truly selfless reasons. He simply liked humans, and didn’t think it right they be crushed under the heel of stronger beings just because. They were interesting, and he wanted them to survive, to see what they could become. He didn’t really feel like this was commendable, and yet others did. Humans began to worship and admire him, and he took it in bewildered stride--- though he didn’t really act upon any of this, simply moving to fight for their sake, finding he...liked the praise and kind words, things no demon ever was given.
He also gathered demons to him, demons that were outcasts and unsure of their place, weaker demons and nes that liked humanity or simply didn’t like Mundus, or liked him. They fought beside him, and...found themselves emulating humanity, forming true bonds as friends rather than as fellow soldiers or as subordinate and master.
In the end, after sealing Mundus away into the lowest level of the Underworld, Sparda sealed the human and demon worlds with the help of a human priestess giving her life --- once close and connected, though separate --- closing the pathways save for occasional rifts or gates. He and his most loyal men stayed on the human side, just in case, and they gave themselves to him as Devil Arms to supplement the power he had lost in using his own souls’ blade to lock the tower gate behind him.
Secreting away the jewel that formed the lock on this side, Sparda vanished into legend. He had no use in seeking more power, now that he was at his height and could not gain more, as he was using that power as a seal --- so he simply faded into the background, taking a human guise and watching as humanity grew and evolved.
Over the years, he reluctantly (at first) found himself defending humanity again and again from other demons that came through rifts and gates, killing some and subjugating others. As the centuries passed he grew to enjoy this, partially out of spite at how much his own people loathed him now, and partially out of a genuine enjoyment of the fight that nothing else could give him.
He met and befriended many humans over the centuries, but never grew close; he felt apart from humans, given that he was a demon, and they were not equals to him. He didn’t look down on them, no, but he saw them as weaker and fragile, sweet and fascinating but in need of protection. He stayed apart from them, though cultivating a human identity (many, over the years) to be able to have money and property and interact with humans if needed. But he stayed aloof, stayed distant, every so often befriending a human or two for a time, occasionally coming back to check on their descendants.
At some point, for a hundred years’ time, he lived and ruled on Fortuna as a sort of lord and guardian to the people there. It wasn’t that big of a deal to him, really, as there was a huge Hellgate there he ended up having to sea properly and protect the people from, but it was only much later he learned that the people of the city had adopted him as a legitimate god. This made him uncomfortable, and he avoided the place after that.
One stop he made regularly was at the island of Vie de Marli, where some of the descendants of the priestess and her order had settled along with other outcasts and people branded heretics --- he aided them again, sealing away a demon lord named Argosax, and all but adopted them afterwards as a sort of guardian. They were the closest to true human friends he had, though he was still distant --- something that his closest friend here, a half-demon named Ester that everyone called Matier, constantly harassed him about. She thought he needed to let himself see humans as equals, to truly live among them as one of them --- he was holding himself still in limbo, not existing in either world, and he needed to hurry up and accept his new home, something he had yet to truly do.
He could not find it in himself to do so for the longest time, unable to find a reason to connect with humanity, make that final step into accepting this world as his own. He was its guardian, a demon protecting the ephemeral and endlessly fascinating humans, but he wasn’t and could never be one of them. Humanity just wasn’t something he could be part of, experience. (This was an argument made in true self-unaware fashion, as humanity had long begun to rub off on him and make him a very unique demon indeed in small ways.)
However, in the year 1965, Sparda ran into a hotheaded and brave young witch named Eva Maylis, who helped protect her city from demons as did the rest of her family. Her courage and ferocity and compassion drew him in almost immediately, though it took a few months of mishaps and shenanigans (and Eva setting him on fire once) for them to be able to get to know each other. Eva was the first human who made Sparda feel...feel different, than he did about humans, the first one that truly reached out and tried to understand how he felt and why, who tried to bridge the gap he felt and who loved him as the flawed and imperfect being he was rather than the legendary knight most saw. Eva was very different, and he found himself falling in love with her as well, the first human he ever felt that way for.
Eva’s presence in his life slowly drew him into the human world properly, and he settled on the name/alias that he would go by from then on --- Aaron Iskandar. (Count Iskandar, as some human or other had given him the title at some point and it and what came with it stuck.) He and Eva bought a house in Red Grave City, Michigan, and married (a very small and private ceremony on Vie de Marli, at Matier’s insistence, and officiated by the woman herself), and began to build a true life for themselves, for Sparda, finally being a part of the world he’d protected and truly grown to love for so long. It was strange, at first, having to actually navigate the human world for once, after choosing to accept fully his life here, but he grew to love it just as much.
In 1977, Eva gave birth to twin boys, and Sparda adored them. His sons were now the most important things in his life besides his wife, and he knew they would be special. He had never had a family before, being a demon, and at first had no idea how to handle small squishy infants, but the concept of having a family, a real human family, was overwhelming. He knew, though, that if they were ever discovered it would be dangerous, with them so young, and began to come up with ways to protect them.
Knowing doing so was only weakening him further, he used his power to create two blades --- Yamato and Rebellion --- just for the boys. Their initial forms were basic, but he knew that as they grew, their nature as demons would shape and evolve them as they gained power. However, their base powers would remain the same, only grow stronger: Yamato was a sword of separation, and Rebellion a sword of binding together. He also took the jewel that was the key to Temen-ni-Gru (something that he’d long worn on his person as an amulet) and broke it in two, knowing it would protect them and keep them safe and help stem their power until it was ready to be awakened in full. He kept it on him, though, intending to give it to them when they were older and their blood first began to stir.
Sparda doted on his boys, teaching them swordplay with wooden toys and telling them stories of his own adventures --- cloaking them as fairy tales --- to prepare them for the day he’d have to tell them the truth. But until then, he and Eva raised them as humans. Well, humans with incredible powers of regeneration and some demonic behaviors.
His Devil Arms doted on the boys as well, most of them able to take human forms as their father’s “business associates”, but a few --- Stolas, Camio, Sitri, and Othrus --- taking animal forms and hanging around the children as ‘pets’ or, in poor Stolas’s case, Dante’s beloved “toy” owl.
However, in 1985, Sparda got word of the seal upon Mundus himself weakening, and without thinking, he gathered his Devil Arms and guns and took off, ready to fight and heedless of his weakened state --- he, still proud and arrogant, thought he could handle it himself, and protect his family. He left the dual amulets with Eva, then, his only failsafe, and took off. It was a trap, in the end and he was soundly defeated by Mundus, dragged off and imprisoned himself in the bowels of hell along with his Arms.
Sparda was tortured by the witch Malphas --- one of Mundus’s right hands --- for two years, and she eventually was able to tear from his mind the location of his human family. This is how Mundus found them. After this, he was dragged into Mundus’ throne room --- as the demon king was greatly weakened and sealed in the lowest level, but not dead or dormant --- and displayed as a prisoner, the traitor and soft and weak dark knight, chained up and displayed publicly so that any of Mundus’s men could torment and torture and abuse him as they liked.
However, this was changed some ten or eleven years later, when one of his sons was defeated and captured by Mundus. Sparda was able to sense Vergil’s torture and broke free, killing many demons in an attempt to save his son, but was caught and beaten down and sealed away again, this time in the block of ice behind Mundus’ throne, half-dead, unaware, and unconscious. There he remains, a trophy of the demon king even after his defeat by the younger of the two sons of Sparda.
Fullmetal Alchemist OG vs. Brotherhood: Hughes’ Investigation (OG 25, BH 10)
1:1 comparison this time, so Brotherhood comes across a little more favorably.
Fullmetal Alchemist Episode 25: "Words of Farewell"
Deciding to follow Scar to get clues about the philosopher's stone, the brothers take Winry with them when she notices that Rush Valley, a town best known for its automail shops, is en route. As they leave, Hughes investigates the fifth laboratory, discovering a connection between it and the war in Ishbal. He confronts the key suspect in it, Juliet Douglas, but is then attacked by Lust. He escapes the two women and tries to telephone Mustang with his information via telephone booth, only to be attacked by Envy, disguised as Ross before he assumes Gracia's form to deliver the death blow. Hughes is posthumously promoted to the rank of a brigadier general. In a flashback, Mustang and Hughes conspire together to ensure the tragedy in Ishbal never happens again.
We open with a flashback to just after Ishbal. Mustang is a mess. He's planning to resurrect the people he killed. Hughes apparently wasn't there, and scolds Mustang for going to the front lines if he couldn't handle the consequences.
Mustang's gun takes focus in the shot when Hughes says there are easier ways to kill yourself.
Mustang says the only reason he didn't try it was out of fear for his own life.
Bradley notices Hughes is sticking his nose where he shouldn't and pays him a visit to say he already investigated it and it's all handled. His coverup is that Grand was working with Ishbalan radicals, which seems like a pretty dubious story. Given Ed's reaction to Ishbal, possibly the truth of the massacre was kept from the public, so it's not unbelievable Ishbalans would work with Grand.
Hughes has found a list of higher-ups other than Grand who are also connected. The shot focuses on Sloth in the background, calmly writing something.
Bradley encourages Hughes to pursue the matter, I guess to lull him into a false sense of security.
Bradley says Sloth is the only one who knows Marcoh's safe location. We already know from episode 22 that she's working with the homunculi, so this may actually be intended as misdirection – see, Bradley didn't know, maybe he's still a good guy… Which of course is brilliant, because that's just how plausible deniability works in real life.
Hughes notices Sloth's nametag doesn't match the name Bradley called her by.
Brosh is listening in on the strategy meeting, but Ross says she doesn't want to get involved in any more crazy stuff.
Ed says he's given up on the Philosopher's Stone and wants to find another way to restore their bodies, so they're going to ask Izumi for help. Armstrong realizes this is because he doesn't want to place the others in the way of danger.
Comedy when Winry talks about Rush Valley.
Elicia is sad to see Ed go.
Cartoon skit when they talk about how mad Izumi would be.
Ah, what they actually plan to do is get Scar to tell them the secret of Ishbal's Stone. Since Ishbal didn't have alchemy, they think they might have used an alternate method. Seems like grasping at straws, but they are pretty desperate.
Al says Scar isn't a bad person, but Ed can't forgive him for using alchemy to kill.
PTSD dream with Scar and Kimblee. It's an actual dream, very distorted.
The master tells Scar he's wrong to seek vengeance while outside, an Amestrian gang wrecks their camp.
Scar kills them. Once again, the skulls are not visibly damaged in the character models.
Ah, Hughes is pointing out how odd it is that the homunculi are destroying people who get close to the Stone if they want people to make one.
Sloth calls Hughes to say she'll escort him to Marcoh's location. Hughes figures out that her given name matches that of the soldier who started the Ishbal war. That soldier was not only supposedly dead at the time, but continued to rise through the ranks poshumously.
Hughes confronts her on this. What was his plan here, exactly?
Why does Lust only extend her claws halfway instead of killing him outright?
Hughes notices her tattoo.
I do have to wonder why Envy doesn't shoot Hughes in the back while they're running? It's possible he wants to see what Hughes will do, I suppose.
Hughes calls Mustang only to discover he's already left for Central.
Hughes coldly cuts Envy-Ross’ throat, which is a really strong image that really cements how brutal and effective Hughes can be when he wants to.
When Hughes dies, we finish the flashback from the opening: Mustang tells him his plan to become Fuhrer.
Mustang says he's tempted to use human transmutation to bring back Hughes.
Mustang cries, and pretends it's the rain. The sky is clear.
We end with the Elrics reflecting on everything Hughes has done for them. Dramatic irony!
Ed sees… Hughes' ghost…?
Credits roll at the end, so I guess this is the end of season 1.
FMA Brotherhood Episode 10: "Separate Destinations"
Führer King Bradley appears at the hospital and warns the Elric brothers to be careful around the military, and he then exits through a window to evade his subordinates. Edward and Alphonse decide to go to the town of Dublith to visit their alchemy teacher, Izumi Curtis, to ask her for information about the philosopher's stone. They agree to take Winry with them when she notices that Rush Valley, a town known for creating the best automail in the world, is on the way to Dublith. Meanwhile, Hughes links the problems in Liore, the fifth laboratory, and the Ishval civil war. He discovers a connection, but is then attacked by Lust. He escapes her and tries to contact Mustang with his information at a public telephone booth, only to be pursued and gunned down by Envy, disguised firstly as Ross, and then as his wife Gracia. Hughes is posthumously promoted to the rank of brigadier general while his murder is investigated by Mustang, who concludes via Armstrong that a high ranked member of the military may be responsible for ordering Hughes' death.
We open with a flashback to Ishbal, and we get the full speech. So Mustang was openly talking about treason while in a crowd of soldiers. Okay then. We also get a shot of Mustang's super fireballs, similar to the flashback in OG.
Bradley looks directly at him and gives him a death glare. So Bradley apparently knew about this the whole time and at no point tried to kill Mustang, because…?
We cut to Mustang in the present day instead of Hughes because of course we do. He's about to move to Central.
Cartoon shift when the heroes reflect on their leads apparently deadending.
Same scene with Brosh and Ross.
Bradley pays Ed a visit. He gives the same "You know too much LOL J/K" speech he gave Hughes in OG. Ed and Al remain in cartoon form throughout the scene.
Bradley claims there's an enemy faction infiltrating the government. The Stone researches went missing only days before the Fifth Laboratory's collapse, not years as in OG.
Bradley tells everyone to be cautious, but keep investigating.
Comedy as Bradley's subordinates call for him and he sneaks away.
Cartoon face as the brothers freak out about Izumi.
Skit with Winry wanting to go to Rush Valley is very similar, but we see the map and locations more clearly.
Hughes tells Ed to marry Winry. Stop being creepy, Hughes.
Hughes reiterates that Winry can stay with them whenever she's in Central.
Gracia tells Hughes to come home safe. Ohoho.
The brothers really are intending to visit Izumi, apparently? Similar cartoon skit when they talk about how she'll kill them.
There have been rebellions in the north area as well. Hughes is worried the government will be overthrown. Oh no…?
Less of Sheska, but also less of Hughes abusing her. She's just in the background looking tired.
Hughes' logic is much less clear. He just mutters something about the uprisings and human sacrifices and wonders who ordered everything. He for some reason doesn't think it's the Fuhrer, because he thinks he needs to tell him immediately.
Lust ambushes Hughes in the archive room. How do they even know he knows anything dangerous at this point? If this is all it takes to get you killed, they should be killing all the heroes at this point.
Hughes notices the tattoo, and we get a closeup shot in case you didn't.
Hughes is much more badly injured by Lust's attack, visibly staggers and collapses.
I think this is our first confirmation homunculi can survive lethal attacks?
Hughes talks to the telephone operator, who sees that he's bleeding. I'd say that's shoddy planning on the villains' part, but Hughes proceeds to tell her nothing, so the idiot ball's just getting passed around today. Even if he didn't trust her, he could have had her send a coded message to Mustang or something.
Hughes doesn't want to use an internal line, so he goes to the phone booth.
Hughes has to give a code to connect to Mustang from an outside line. This is where he drops the photo: he needs to open his notebook to get the code.
Envy-Ross pulls a gun on Hughes while he's in the phone booth. Why did he even bother transforming? Given what happens later I guess they were planning to frame Ross, but why does Envy put up an act? That this is so obviously not Ross completely ruins the effect. Envy also does not just shoot him immediately, because…?
And Envy is still talking. Why.
No shot of Envy looking at the photo.
Hughes yells "WHAT ARE YOU?!" when Envy turns into Gracia. I'm sorry, that completely ruins the effect of the scene for me. If he had time to talk he had time to throw the knife. Less is more.
We cut away for the gunshot.
Mustang actually does pick up, and Hughes clutches for the receiver before Envy just hangs up. Why didn't Envy use Hughes' voice to screw with Mustang? That would have been actually clever.
Envy sneers about humans being idiots. Except he's in his default form in a place where anyone could see him, so methinks the pot is calling the kettle black.
Hughes' family photo gets covered over with his blood. It works I guess, but I feel like it's over-the-top.
And Hughes gets last words apologizing to his family for being late. Too much.
We see the scene with Ed before the funeral. I don't like that. I think it has stronger impact at the end, especially since it leads us effectively into the next arc.
Elicia's tone is less even: she starts off pretty calm and ends hysterical. I think that's too much like how an adult would behave, not a child. We do get more focus on Gracia crying, though.
We get a date on the grave. Hughes was born 1885, making him 29.
Mustang says the same line about human transmutation, but he adds that he understands how the Elrics felt when they did it.
Nothing about him wondering why Hughes didn't tell him the Elrics were in trouble.
Riza explicitly points out it's not raining, which I think dilutes the emotion of the moment.
We end with Mustang investigating, which I believe is covered in the next OG episode. Armstrong can't tell him who the suspects are, so he deduces someone higher up must have issued a gag order. He also deduces from Armstrong telling him the Elrics were in Central but didn't find the Stone that it's related to the Stone, which seems like more of a stretch.
Conclusion
Mustang's taking over Brotherhood again. He's the subject of the beginning and ending, rather than Hughes.
I'd say that plotwise, Brotherhood is tighter here, but OG is stronger tonally. As usual, Brotherhood feels rushed to me. Everything proceeds too fast; we don't get a clear sense of just what Hughes was onto, and as a consequence it makes less sense why the villains are targeting him specifically. OG feels more professionally directed; the cinematography and the flow of the action just work better for me. Hughes revealing a specific important detail also makes this worthwhile to the audience; his death was not in vain.
I find it notable how different the flashback is in OG. There it's a moment of vulnerability and human weakness. Much like Mustang's suicide attempt, it truly shows how affected he is by his sins. In Brotherhood it's just a vehicle to deliver exposition.
The addition of the Ishbal camp scene in OG is probably a controversial move. I can understand people who feel it's distracting, but personally I like having multiple plates spinning in an episode.
It's annoying how much time the villains take killing Hughes, though, in both continuities. Why were they giving him so much time to investigate, when they already knew he knew too much? Why didn't they just have Envy walk up to his office in disguise and shoot him? I get the impression Sloth was trying to lure him away from witnesses in OG, but that shouldn't have been necessary in the first place. This whole thing is framed like they really are outside infiltrators and not controlling the entire government; it's subterfuge for the audience's sake, not for the characters'. Knowing Bradley is also in on it, he could have just, I dunno, arrested Hughes and rushed an execution without trial. “On what charge?” “I’m a dictator, there doesn’t have to be one!” Who’s going to stop him? It’s not like he can even be assassinated!
