#Ancient Egyptians Were Blacks – Kemet History

Ancient Black Egyptians? They were African? Were they? This was a topic that was raised and discussed. It is true that other studies have been carried out which suggest the opposite. But the answer is there if you look closely at the enormous array.

Here are the facts that prove ancient Egyptians were Black and Africans.

Ancient Egyptians referred to their homeland as Kmt (conventionally pronounced as Kemet). According to Diop, the Egyptians referred to themselves as “Black” people or kmt, and km was the etymological root of other words, such as Kam or Ham, which refer to Black people.

Senegalese scholar Dr. Cheikh Anta Diop (1923-1986)’s role in life was to challenge Eurocentric and Arab-centric perceptions of pre-colonial African society. He set out to prove definitively that Egypt’s ancient civilization had its origins in Black Africa. At the Museum of Man in Paris, he performed melanin checks on Egyptian mummies and concluded that all the ancient Egyptians were among the Black races.

Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamen and family analysis by DNATribes recently found that sub-Saharan Africans, especially those from Southern Africa and the Great Lakes region, are the closest living relatives of the mummies, Face2Face Africa documented.

Scouring the past of Egypt and ancient Egyptians, some ancient Greek historians said that the skin of ancient Egyptians was “melanchroes,” that is, black or dark-skinned. The ancient Egyptians were also identified by early Latin eyewitnesses as “black-skinned.”

Scholars Agree Some of the world’s most esteemed scholars have speculated that Egyptians were Black Africans. Some modern researchers, like W. E. B. Du Bois accepted the theory that Ancient Egyptian society was mostly black Face2Face Africa documented.

In addition to Dr. Diop’s research, in its geographic DNA study, National Geographic recorded that 68 percent of present-day Egyptians are ethnically North African, with foreign invasions having little influence on the genetics of most modern Egyptians.

Some of the most famous ancient Egyptians have been identified as black. For example, Queen Ahmose-Nefertari is most often identified as a woman of color. “According to Sigrid Hodel-Hoenes, the author of “Life and Death in Ancient Egypt,” the Queen’s black skin color is derived from her role, as black is the color of both the fertile earth and the netherworld and death.”

“The term is a collective noun which thus described the whole people of Pharaonic Egypt as a Black person,” according to Diop.

Reading Bones Most of the skeletons and skulls of ancient Egyptians had characteristics similar to those of modern Black Nubians and other people of the Upper Nile and East Africa, showing they were Black and African, according to study by scientist Diop.

The Blood Group Tell Us Also, blood type is evidence, according to Diop. He discovered that even after hundreds of years of intermixing with foreign invaders, the blood type of modern Egyptians is the same group B as West Africa populations on the Atlantic seaboard and not the white race’s A2 characteristic prior to any crossbreeding,’  The Atlanta Star reported.

He discovered that even after centuries of intermarrying with foreign invaders, the blood type of modern Egyptians is the same group B as West Africa tribes on the Atlantic seaboard and not the white race’s A2 characteristic prior to any crossbreeding.

“The Atlanta Star reported that Diop clearly indicates that ancient Egyptian, modern Egyptian Coptic, and Wolof are related, with the latter two having their origins in the former.

Diop wrote in the “General History of Africa”: “The relationship between ancient Egyptian and African languages is not a fictional fact, but a demonstrable fact that it is impossible to put aside for scholarship.”

The artifacts, including hundreds of fragments of pottery, jewelry, stone vessels, and ceremonial objects such as incense burners, were initially recovered from the Qustul cemetery by Keith C. Seele, a professor at the University of Chicago. The cemetery, which contained 33 tombs that were heavily plundered in ancient times, was on the Nile near the modern boundary between Egypt and the Sudan.

The significance of the artifacts, which had been in storage at the university's Oriental Institute, was not fully appreciated until last year, when Brace Williams, a research associate, began to study them.

“Keith Seele had suspected the tombs were special, perhaps even royal,” Dr. Williams said in an interview. “It was obvious from the quantity and quality of the painted pottery and the jewelry that we were dealing with wealthy people. But it was the picture on a stone incense burner that indicated we really had the tomb of a king.”

On the incense burner, which was broken and had to be pieced together, was a depiction of a palace facade, a crowned king sitting on a throne in a boat, a royal standard before the king and, hovering above the king, the falcon god Horus. Most of the images are ones commonly associated with kingship in later Egyptian traditions.

Evidence of the oldest recognizable monarctiy in human history, preceding the rise of the earliest Egyptian kings by several generations, has been discovered in artifacts from ancient Nubia in Africa.

Until now it had been assumed that at that time the ancient Nubian culture, which existed in what is now northern Sudan and southern Egypt, had not advanced beyond a collection of scattered tribal clans and chiefdoms.

The existence of rule by kings indicates a more advanced form of political organization in which many chiefdoms are united under a more powerful and wealthier ruler.

A Lesson on Sympathetic Magic

What is Sympathetic Magic?

“Sympathetic magic, also known as imitative magic, is a type of magic based on imitation or correspondence." - Wikipedia

It may involve acting on a physical representation of a target or creating a physical representation of the outcome or recreating the desired outcome through motion and art. In this way, the practitioner might cause change at a distance in time or space.” - magickalspot.com

Sympathetic Magic Broken Down

Sympathetic Magic might sound difficult but I promise it is not. Let’s have a bit of a history lesson. Sir James George Frasier first outlined the underlying principles of sympathetic magic in his (1890-1915) book The Golden Bough (Ch 3). He explained that it was based on two basic principles which we now call the Law of Similarity and the Law of Contagion or Contact. There was also a book written by Richard Andree called Sympathy-Enchantment which was written in 1882. The idea of some form of sympathetic magic has existed since prehistory.

There has been talk of Ancient Egyptians using sympathetic magic within their rituals, from use of charms and amulets. We can see examples of sympathetic magic in Kemetic practices, some history is never forgotten.

Principle - Explanation: Examples

Law of Similarity - “Like produces like”: Uses of a poppet to create a direct link to a target for healing, baneful work and other means

Law of Contagion - Objects or beings/things in contact retain a connection: Using a taglock (hair, nails, body fluids) in a spell to influence the target or as a representation of yourself

Law of Correspondence - Symbolic associations create connections: using for example a pink candle for self-love or a black candle for protection or baneful work. This would follow colour magic for theory

Law of Association - Linking two entities establishes a connection: Placing a photo of an ancestor on an ancestor altar or using a photo as a Taglock for a spell

Sympathetic Magic is the correspondence itself within witchcraft practice. It’s the main driving point behind a spell that uses materials. Without mastering sympathetic magic, your spells may not work as intended and may not have the power behind them that you so wish. Even materials in magic sometimes need a taglock of sorts for a spell to be as effective.

Law of Similarity

The Law of Similarity states that things that resemble each other have a connection on a metaphysical level. Examples include a poppet being used to represent an individual, either yourself or someone else. Its similarity to the target. This is what would drive the spellwork, as it would influence the target as intended. This is the basics of the law, the very base of representations in spellwork.

The Law of Contagion or Contact

The Law of Contagion states that things that were once in contact remain connected after separation and that whatever affects one can still affect the other, and whatever energy was in the original remains in the removed. We see this in taglocks, taglocks that were once connected to a being, living or dead. This can be physical taglocks (hair, nails, body fluids) or even a business card this person once possessed or an item of clothing. Alternatively, if you were out of options a name and birthday or a photograph would work fine. In a pinch, you work with what you have.

Types of Sympathetic Magic

Similarity

That of which resembles something that represents or substitutes an object or thing to do with the working. We can look at alchemy in this sense, we would alchemize an ingredient as a substitute. Pomegranates have been seen as a substitute for blood as t’s connected with life/death, vitality and mortality/immortality. It shows this symbolism through myths throughout different cultures and some folklore (ex. vampires). You can thank our Maven Satan for this fun fact so I can look into it further.

Contact

That of which something came in contact with something that can represent an object, thing or person. Examples include taglocks (hair, nails bodily fluids) or even moon/sun water as its rays have “touched” the water, blessing it a certain way. It can be UPG, SPG or VPG.

Imitation

While being close to similarity, it's not quite the same. It involves the act of creating an imitation object. Things like Poppets are great examples of alchemizing an ingredient for a working. The important thing is that it looks like the thing/person you are creating, however, a close imitation works just as fine (alchemy). Correspondence Correspondences are essentially the idea that something can influence another thing because of its relationship or resemblances to said thing. Let's say for example a correspondence to a deity, Roses are seen as a correspondence to the goddess Aphrodite or Keys for Hekate. You can also have something like Peppermint that represents the planet Mercury, as it rules under such. Correspondences can look like colours, plants, minerals and objects. As long as it represents that thing you are working with, it is a correspondence.

Practice - Purpose: Example

Poppet Magic - Healing, cursing, influencing, or representing a person: Constructing a doll-like figure and using it as a focus point to a ritual

Mirror Magic - Reflection, divination, or reversing energy: Using mirrors to channel intentions, amplify energy, reflect energy or for scrying

Material Correspondences - Utilizing plants, minerals and colours for their symbolic associations: Selecting specific herbs or flowers from research for their correspondence to include in a spell or working

Charm or Talisman Creation - Protection, luck, or manifestation: Crafting a personal charm or talisman with an intended purpose like protection or invisibility

Brainwashing, grooming, conditioning, indoctrination centers.

Seductive marketing, hypnotic messaging, brainwashing techniques in advertising.

Same with homeownership being the “American Dream”.

It was started as a marketing campaign at the beginning of the 1900s by a president of a real estate company.

The marketing campaign proved so successful that starting with FDR’s New Deal, the United States government started pushing and promoting home ownership as quintessential to the American Dream.

Today, 94% of Americans believe that owning a home is a quintessential part of the American dream.

Brainwashed. Indoctrinated. Conditioned. Groomed.

Its actually taking on hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt, signing your life away for 20 to 30 years when you have no control over the housing market or economy.

Have you all already forgotten about Lehman Brothers, subprime mortgages and the housing collapse PURPOSELY CAUSED in 2008 by lenders providing loans to borrowers whom they knew would be unable to pay the loans back thus causing a housing market collapse and allowing the same lenders to buy back these subprime loans and pocket billions while the housing market and economy crashed and millions lost their homes and jobs?

Were you alive in 2008?

If not, look it up.

So, its a losing proposition, owning a home.

A HELOC is taking on more debt even if you borrow against the equity in your home in the form of a loan, you will have to pay the loan back with interest.

No thanks.

Even if you are clever and invest in upgrading your home, rent it out, make money off of it as a rental property or invest in it and flip it and profit it off of it or if you pay the loan off over 20 or 30 years, do upgrades to the home, then sell it for a significant profit, so what?

How the fuck is that a “dream”?

That doesnt explain the promotion of home ownership as a quintessential part of the American dream.

Most of the wealth in America is owned by white people as they concentrate the wealth then pass it on to their future generations and bloodline through estate planning and wills that transfers real estate and assets from wealthy parents to their children.

How hard would it be to take the Earned Income Tax Credit that right now goes to parents with children that own a home, take that money and repurpose it to a Universal Basic Income (UBI) that provides each American adult 18 and over with a $1k a month?

They have done studies that have shown that even $500 a month — and if we have $4 billion to send to Israel every year to kill innocent Palestinian civilians dont tell me we dont have $500 a month for every adult in the US — significantly improved the lives of families in poverty — they stopped skipping meals, they stopped undereating, starving, eating sugar sandwiches and dry cereal for dinner, they stopped avoiding getting needed urgent medical care, they stopped smoking to suppress their appetite (this is well documented, look it up), they stopped drinking as self medication, they stopped eating cheap shitty fast food and frozen meals — and surprise, surprise their quality of life went way up.

For $500 fucking dollars.

And surprise, surprise, they dont want that.

The amount is forecast to double by 2050 and 90% is never recycled.

Over half of the plastics produced are used only once, for things like packaging, utensils and straws.

Look into remote options, freelance and/or start your own business online at home.

Exxon Mobil created a Plastic Grocery Sack Council in 1985 to get customers to use plastic sacks widely.

Same with retirement being the “golden years” and purchasing a house “being the American dream”.

So, who created the concept since it is so ubiquitous in American society & culture?

What about the “golden years” of retirement?

Instead of dreaded years of decline, Del Webb revolutionized retirement in America to be something people desired and longed for.

I’m sorry if this question has been answered millions of times, but over the months I’ve become worried if it’s wrong for me to worship the Kemetic Gods.

I stsrted practicing this faith earlier this year and have made connections to many gods, but I still worry that since I’m white, it’s really shameful and disrespectful for me to worship them. I love the gods and I don’t want to ignore them, but I’m worries this is cultural appropriation.

I will disagree a little with the last comment as there are some cultures with closed practices and customs, but the rest is pretty accurate.

Quite simply, our concept of race did not exist back then in the age of pyramids. You were either Egyptian or a foreigner, and even then, they were very open and shared their culture with others. Granted, like any major civilization, they did engage in warfare but that's a whole nother thing u can read up on ur own.

We even have greek and egyptian God combinations. Roman ones too I believe. So it's not cultural appropriation to me imo. He worked as an adjunct professor (1973-1987) at Cornell University in the Africana Studies and Research Center, then directed by James Turner. He also taught at other institutions, including Malcom-King College in Harlem and Rutgers University. In 1977 he accepted an honorary faculty position with the Israelite Rabbinical Academy at Beth Shalom Hebrew Congregation in Brooklyn.

Dr. Ben appeared several times on Gil Noble’s WABC-TV weekly public affairs series Like It Is.

Dr. Ben was a prolific author whose writing focused primarily on ancient Nile Valley civilizations and their influence on Western cultures. According to Nick Chiles writing for Atlanta Black Star, “One of [Dr. Ben’s] many specialties was the ancient civilization of Kemet in Egypt. He was one of the first true Egyptologists, before that title had even come into vogue. Dr. Ben was always a controversial figure because he had no interest in trying to placate European scholars or writers who were threatened by his claims about Africa, Europe and the Middle East.”

In 2002, Ben-Jochannan donated his personal library of more than 35,000 volumes, manuscripts and ancient scrolls to the Nation of Islam.

Dr. Yosef Ben-Jochannan died in Harlem, New York on March 19, 2015 at the age of 96 at the Bay Park Nursing Home in the Bronx. He had been married three times and had a total of 13 children.

“Of all our greats, Dr. Ben physically took tens of thousands of scholars, activists, students and associations to the Nile Valley to make the pages of his book more authentic,” said his colleague, Reggie Mabry. “We saw our own experiences of what he wrote… For that the Black world is indebted to this Black man of the Nile and his family.”

The  Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty (1539–1292 bc) Akhenaten,   identified himself with the sun god Aton and elevated the cult of Aton above the worship of most other gods, including Amon, the king of the gods.

Political and religious upheavals showed very early in history that people do not like major changes in their deepest beliefs and ancestral values. After his death, his name was erased from many temples, buildings were destroyed and the ancient worship was restored.

The night sky was understood as the body of the goddess Nut, who tried to connect with the earth, the god Geb, but was prevented by the air, the god Shu. Nut's body was composed of stars which, in some religious texts, are seen as "illuminated vessels" sailing through the body of the goddess.

 It was their familiarity with the night sky and the cycles of nature that made the ancient Egyptians perceive a pattern: as soon as Sopdet, an extremely bright star appeared in the sky, the floods of the Nile River began. That star is currently called Sirius and the story I'm going to tell you,  begins on a distant planet that surrounds it - Askhant and on it develops a mystical-technological civilization that governs this mysterious world - The Athon Empire.

Ancient archaeological records on the planet speak of a distant blue planet illuminated by a star,  deserts as far as the eye can see "Desheret" and of very fertile black lands "Kemet" and these records have always intrigued the various generations of scholars and Askhant mystics.

Many of the ancient records were burned but a Secret Society tries to discover the whole truth amid enigmas and forbidden secrets against the laws of the Keoths, the ruling mystical elite.

Members of the secret society, identified with an inverted triangle, "The Guardians Of Thoth" move through mazes of information, ancient writings, data centers, excavations and ancient ruins in hopes of understanding their own history and understanding why so much institutional secrecy .

The Spear of Celle is the mystical weapon of Celle of Many Waters. Celle, who began as a shaman for the ancient fennec settlement of Dand Ocurp (Door to the River's Mouth), eventually rose to become Pharaoh of the competing Black Dynasty before Alexander the Great's conquests into Egypt.

One of the indigenous fennec tribes of North Africa settled around a massive, but abandoned, temple to Amon-Ra. Celle had just become shaman - and the youngest shaman in the history of the tribes. When the leader of her tribe, Arhou, began to strip the temple and turn it into a place of Apeaen worship, she struck him in the back of the skull with a rock. He was killed on impact, and she was immediately detained by her tribe. Moments before she was to die for her crime, she gave a plea that it was the will of Cia to preserve the temple and to investigate the mysteries of Kemeticism. Her plea was convincing, and her life was spared. She took up the mantle of shaman-chief - the first and last time this has ever happened.

Celle, discovering her silver-tongue, used it to buy trade and advantages with the neighbouring Egyptian state. She went alone, naked, and represented her people on her own. Stunned by her bravery and commitment, the Pharaoh's advisor, Bek-Char, gave her a task that, should she and her people complete it, would become a protected vassal of Egypt and her armies, and would be granted a representative to ask the Pharaoh of her earthly needs. She intended to return to Dand Ocurp that night, instead of resting and partaking in the lavish gifts of the Pharaoh's advisor. She hid inside a desert caravan and slept with food rations.

Legend holds that the fennec shaman-chief Celle awoke to the caravan being attacked by raiders sent by those very enemies that she was asked to attack for Egypt's favour. Naked and armed only with a simple spear, she defends the caravan and kills all of the raiding party.

Celle's injuries were grievous, but the caravan had many tonics and herbs, and she asked the few survivors of half their goods as payment for saving their lives. Honourbound to obey her demand, she was gifted what she needed to mend herself, and took the rest with her - along with a horse and caravan coach - back to her people at Dand Ocurp. She regaled the tribe with her adventures and, with the spoils of her victory, the tribe feasted and fornicated for seven days and seven nights until, according to Lapis of Alexandria, "most of the women would become pregnant - as young as seventeen, and as old as forty-three - before the year's end." Celle herself would become pregnant, too, and with "… the seed of several men, among them with names such as Kiss, Purity, and Large."

Celle, with two others, returned to give the news - along with the caravan's witnesses - to Bek-Char in the ornate Egyptian desert citadel-city of Aat. Amazed by her prowess and ingenuity, the battle-scarred Celle brought her tribe and its place in the desert into Egyptian society. This began the Apeaen Schism that persists to the modern day, where Apea accounts for '70%' of all fennec folk pagans and Dazua has claimed the other '30%'. Dazua, founded by Celle, inherits many Kemetic beliefs and rituals. Because of this, she is called the First Saint; despite causing the Schism, she remains as important a religious and cultural figure to Apeaen fennecs as she does to Dazuan fennecs.

Using the same spear that she purchased this alliance with, Celle fought in many wars - both for and with her people from Dand Ocurp, assisting Egypt's military, and even against Egypt, until she was eventually put to death by the Greek Pharaoh: Ptolemy I Soter. Her spear rests, now, in a very small cultural museum, in the modern city of Heaven's Honour (Arabic: Sharaf Aljana), where it resides within a mosque on the grounds that the former Temple of Amon-Ra once stood.

Many legends exist about the spear and its mystical powers. Apeaen fennecs believe that it is a powerful artefact, blessed with Sky Magic. Dazuans hold that it waits for one of Celle's descendants to claim it and unite the fennec diaspora under a new Pharaonic regime. Some believe that it has the same abilities of the Ark of the Covenant, or that it's a cursed weapon that, should it ever be held or touched, will bring swift death and/or misfortune.

Because of these and other myths and legends regarding the spear, it has been the subject of several pieces of entertainment media, with the most notable mention being the 2008 Oscar-nominated action-romance film Fires Over the Oasis.

Cultural Appropriation in Modern Witchcraft

Cultural appropriation occurs when cultural practices are taken out of their original context and misused by outsiders. Cultural appropriation is different from cultural sharing, which occurs naturally in any multicultural society. Eating at an Indian restaurant is not cultural appropriation. Wearing a bindi when you don’t understand its significance in Indian culture is.

Cultural appropriation is a huge issue in modern witchcraft. When you have witches using white sage to “smudge” their altars, doing meditations to balance their chakras, and calling on Santa Muerte in spells, all without making any effort to understand the cultural roots of those practices, you have a serious problem.

When trying to understand cultural appropriation in witchcraft, it’s important to understand the difference between open and closed magic systems. An open system is one that is open to exchange with outsiders — both sharing ideas/practices and taking in new ones. In terms of religion, spirituality, and witchcraft, a completely open system has no restrictions on who can practice its teachings. A closed system is one that is isolated from outside influences — usually, there is some kind of restriction on who can practice within these systems.

There are different reasons a system might be closed. Some systems require a formal training and/or initiation, but there is no restriction on who can be initiated. Reiki and some forms of Wicca operate this way. (All other forms of Wicca are completely open.) Some systems are closely tied to a complex set of cultural beliefs that may not be fully understood by outsiders, so they are closed to people outside of that culture. Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism) is an example of this. Some systems require a family lineage, so you must have been born into the system to practice within it. Zoroastrianism and some forms of traditional witchcraft fall into this category. And finally, some systems are closed as a kind of self defense, usually because they have been the target of persecution from outsiders — keeping the system closed is a way to preserve beliefs and practices that might otherwise be lost. African Diaspora Religions fall into this last category.

If a belief or practice is part of a closed system, outsiders should not take part in it. It really is that simple. If you aren’t Native American, you should not be performing smudging ceremonies. If you aren’t Jewish, you should not be practicing Kabbalah or working with Lilith as your “goddess.” If you aren’t Black, you should not be practicing Hoodoo. You get the idea.

On a similar note, just because a system is open does not mean you can do whatever you want with its teachings. You should still make a point of educating yourself on the system you are practicing and take care not to take things out of their original context. Some forms of Shinto are open, but you wouldn’t involve the kami in a Wiccan- or pagan-style ritual — Shinto has its own rules for ritual, which are very different from Western paganism. If you feel called to work with a cultural system you are not already part of, you need to be willing to put in the work of respectfully learning about and preserving that system.

It is impossible to appropriate a dominant culture. For example, in the United States, white American culture is treated as the default. There is tremendous pressure on all other cultural groups to speak English, dress like white Americans, and act like white Americans. White American culture has deep roots in Protestant Christianity, and these religious influences are enforced through social norms and sometimes through laws. Many businesses are closed on Christmas and Easter, and I live in an area where it is illegal to sell alcohol on Sunday mornings. White (Christian) American culture is literally being shoved down everyone’s throats all the time. A non-Christian immigrant wearing a cable-knit sweater, taking Sundays off work, or celebrating Christmas isn’t cultural appropriation, because they are expected to adopt these elements of the dominant culture.

It is also impossible to appropriate your own culture, even if you weren’t raised in it. For example, a Latinx person who decides to learn brujeria does not need anyone’s permission to do so. That practice is a part of their cultural heritage.

Dead cultures are a gray area, but the general consensus is that you cannot appropriate a system that isn’t connected to a living culture. For example, Hellenic polytheism is very different from modern Greek culture. A non-Greek person practicing Hellenic polytheism isn’t appropriating Greek culture, because that religion hasn’t been openly practiced in Greece for thousands of years. The same goes for many other types of reconstructionist paganism (paganism based on recreating ancient beliefs and practices) such as Kemetic (Egyptian) polytheism, Celtic paganism, Norse paganism, etc.

This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t still make an effort to be respectful of the cultural origins of these religions. If you worship the Kemetic gods, you should probably educate yourself on at least the basic history and philosophy of Ancient Egypt. You should probably try to be faithful to the ancient beliefs in your practice. But you don’t need any sort of initiation, because there is no direct connection between the ancient religion and modern reconstruction.

So How Do We Avoid Appropriation?

Know the difference between open and closed systems, and respect if a system is closed.

If a system is open or only partially closed, try to find a teacher or mentor who is already a part of that system. If an in-person mentor isn’t possible, try to find books and other resources created by people who are actually part of that culture.

Only use items or practices in your witchcraft if you have a good understanding of their cultural, religious, and/or spiritual significance.

If a member of a culture or magic system tells you their system is closed and asks you to stop using it, listen to them.

Educate yourself on how cultural appropriation contributes to systemic racism and other social issues.

Don’t try to sneak around culture appropriation. If you burn white sage to cleanse your space, you are still appropriating Native American spiritual practices (and contributing to the overharvesting of an endangered plant), even if you don’t use the term “smudging” or appropriate the entire smudge ceremony. If something is not yours to practice, leave it alone.

Learning about other cultures is not the same as cultural appropriation. Here’s a personal example: I live fairly close to New Orleans, and I think New Orleans Voodoo is a fascinating tradition. When I visit, I like to speak to local Voodoo practitioners and learn from them about their practice. That being said, I recognize that I am not a part of that practice, and I’m not about to start incorporating elements of Voodoo into my personal practice.

As a white woman, my track record is not perfect when it comes to cultural appropriation. When I first started my witchcraft journey, I burned white sage and worked with the chakra system. I didn’t know any better, and these things were presented to me as if they were open to anyone. But now I do know better, and I’m making a conscious effort to avoid appropriation in my practice.

I’m also trying to do better for new witches just entering the world of alternative spirituality. It’s important for us to talk about things like cultural appropriation so that baby witches know from the beginning what the issues are and why they matter.

Just discovered the Kemet hashtag & if you're not familiar with the word Kemet that was the name of Egypt in the past.

Kemet mean "Black Land" which alot of people mistake for the skin colour but it's actually black land cause of the soil, it was rich black & that's how Egypt started by ancient Egyptians living on that soil by the Nile banks.

When I entered the hashtag I've seen what I feared & that's afrocentrism.

Technically Afrocentrics believe that they're the owners of Egypt & so on & that ancient Egyptians were black. If you're familiar with the Egyptian history you'd know that literally everyone is trying to claim it even though it has been proved that we still carry our Egyptian DNA even though we've colonised many times, we still carry it.

So the hashtag has false info about Egypt, false pictures, pictures of ancient Egyptians photoshopped to go with the Afrocentric movement.

Please don't believe everything you see on the internet about Egypt, Google info yourself cause we Egyptians are tired with everyone claiming our history.

Yes, because since the appearance of hieroglyphic writing (3400 BC), the ancient Egyptians designated themselves by the word KaMtou meaning Blacks, because they were. Moreover, they used the word KaMi or KeMet (KMT) meaning Black, not only to designate their land, but also by extension our continent. Sudan means "land of the blacks" and Ethiopia means "burnt faces".

I guess I should make a post about the beings I work with, in case you're curious.

Some history first. When I was about six I had an egyptology special interest (typical lol) so I wanted desperately to work with Bast. She turned me down cold. I tried an Abrahamic god after that but he never responded, so from there although I researched greek and roman gods extensively I gave up on response. When I was about 18, starting college, that changed.

I began working closely with the greek gods, through dream and prayer. Hades and Charon, Hermes, Athena, and Aphrodite were some of the main ones. Since then, Hades has adopted me as his child. Hermes is something of a mentor or older cousin to me. And many other of the pantheon are some form of extended family.

At that time, I also believed myself to be working with Thanatos and never questioned why he appeared to me as a tall black man in ancient egyptian dress. I'm sure you can see the blindingly obvious result: It was Anubis all along, colluding with Thanatos to get to know me since he was aware of my trepidation regarding his pantheon. Absolute fucking bitch move, and it worked. The doggy ass bitch is now effectively my brother. What an ass. (I love him.)

Recently, I have also been recieving dreams from a norse god I believe may be Odin. The dreams are extraordinarily vague and woo-y, which apparently is just Odin's style. I must say I'm not a fan, really wish he'd just TELL me what he's on about. I'm not as familiar with the norse gods so if anyone knows good resources, hit me up!

Also, very gently, I have had some talks with dearest Luci-Lu. He seems to think I'm some kind of funny little creacher he likes to watch for entertainment and like.... listen. He's not wrong. And he's also really not bothering me so I'm not gonna spurn him for no reason.

As for other beings, I do work a little with the local fair folk and with other such naturey spirits. I also get a lot of ghostly walk-ins because, well-- I'm a witch, my sister is a witch, my dad comes from a long line of mediums, my parents are ghost hunters-- you get the picture. My mother attracts spiritual nasties like a damned magnet. They don't really bother me, because my room is warded Literally to hell and back, and our family has a reputation among both living and dead as being neutral ground. But it's a thing, so.

One time in the 2000s, the Tonester and I were invited to participate in a Pagan meetup down in central Texas. We were so excited, we stayed up all night the previous evening to bake a shit-ton of chocolate chip cookies. Then we put on our best black duds and went to the meetup. When we arrived, we found we were two of the only three men present, and that everyone else at the meetup was a Wiccan. They took one look at our black clothes and our horned pentagram necklaces and thought we were bad news. And they were really weirded out by the fact that we had made so many chocolate chip cookies. They were like, “Who the hell are these devil worshipers, and why did they bring cookies?” We tried to make friends and explain what we were all about; but things didn’t go well. As soon as we mentioned Set’s name, we received the standard response: “Isn’t He the bad guy of the Egyptian pantheon? Why would you worship the bad guy?” And when we attempted to explain, we were chastised for “not being Pagan enough.” Everything we told them about Ma’at, isfet, and Set’s war against Ap-p sounded “too Christian” to them. They seemed to think we had simply taken Christianity and replaced Jesus with an Egyptian devil-god. They didn’t believe that anything we were talking about had actually originated from Egypt. After a while, it became clear that we just weren’t welcome (despite the fact that everyone seemed to enjoy our cookies). So we left and went home. We put so much energy into this event, and we really tried our best to be cordial and make friends. But we were treated like creeps, and it was demoralizing. We never went to another Pagan meetup again after that. The word Pagan comes from the Latin paganus, which means “country dweller.” When the Roman Empire adopted Christianity as its official state religion, pagan was applied to virtually anyone who refused to convert—with the insinuation being that non-Christians were primitive, backward yokels. No one in history ever referred to themselves as a Pagan until after the Industrial Revolution, when artists of the Romantic movement started incorporating ancient polytheist ideas into their work. Since then, Pagan has become a “catch-all” term for various new religious movements that each take their inspiration from nature and ancient mythology in some way (e.g., Wicca, Druidism, Heathenry, Kemeticism, etc.). It does not actually denote any particular theology, philosophy, or creed; it is simply a collective “safe space” for several religious communities that just don’t feel welcome anywhere else. So when Pagans alienate other Pagans from this “safe space,” it is especially hypocritical. Even Wiccans know what it is like to have people call Child Protection Services on you simply for identifying as a “witch.” You would think, therefore, that they would be a little more sympathetic to other Pagans who struggle with similar prejudices. But in my experience, people generally deal with persecution by trying to shift it on to somebody else. This ugly tendency is every bit as true of Pagans as it is of other religious communities. Sometimes when people ask about my religion, they get confused because of all the different terms that can be applied to it. I prefer to identify as a Setian, but I can also be described as a Kemetic polytheist. And of course, I include myself beneath the Pagan umbrella (even though certain other Pagans would prefer that I didn’t). But really, Pagan is my least favorite self-label. It can be very useful for networking purposes; but apart from that, it is practically meaningless.
