To all Americans who use/ have used Facebook. They're settling and sending payments to users who have been active between 2007 and December 2022, as your data was sold to Analytica (who supported President Fart).
The article has a link to the application form.

twitter trying to put a fee on new users from the philippines and new zealand... SO many things are not good about this, but one thing that sticks out to me is that, while I know that it's to curb spambots and melon moose does not have the intelligence or finesse to cambridge analytica this, I'm also just like. tired of being the targeted demographic for social media experiments for someone else's profits with no consideration of how this will greatly affect local politics here

The users' lawyers alleged that Facebook misled them into thinking they could keep control over personal data, when in fact it let thousands of preferred outsiders gain access.
Facebook argued:
its users have no legitimate privacy interest in information they shared with friends on social media.
US District Judge Vince Chhabria called that view "so wrong", and in 2019 largely allowed the case to move forward.
That sums the company up quite nicely.
Your information even if you aren’t posting (collecting telemetry from your phone, contact list, etc), is what they’re after, and it’s what generates revenue for the company.
Stop using their apps. Uninstall their apps.
End Manipulation Platforms Now.

im taking a class on disinformation and fake news this semester, and one of the things that absolutely changed the way I look at information and news on the internet and how they're portrayed, is that the main tool all of those people that are here solely to sow chaos, spread misinformation and have control over the public are using isn't like. untrue information. it's not lies. it's polarization.
they're going to post a thing in this circle, and in that, raise the emotions and rally the people against each other, and we're just doing it. we're really just doing whatever the hell they want because we're angry and we think it's a righteous anger, that we have a right to that anger, and they fucking LOVE it. it's so easy to control emotional people. divide and conquer, yknow?
like, i get it. I really do. We're angry and we do have a right to be angry. It's healthy to be angry. But, as much as it pains me to say it, we probably should be looking for ways to compromise with the society as it is today instead of rioting and burning and wishing death on everyone who disagrees with us. because I look around after learning how misinformation agents work, and I feel like we're all blind to what's happening. I saw a screenshot of a headline that said a legislator in montana would rather risk her daughter's suicide than let her transition, with no links to the article or even a source. nothing. and people got so angry in the notes. don't we know that catchy headlines is how they get you? regardless if it was real or not, don't we know that mechanism? of course we disagree with republicans or whatever the hell is going on in america, of course we're angry that a mother said that about her child (if that was the case, once again - no sources at all) but there's a place for anger, and there's a place for constructive discussions. we should draw conclusions from our emotions, not act through them
we're all vulnerable to manipulation. we can't forget that misinformation isn't just 5G conspiracies and deep fake images of the pope wearing a coat. there are agents out there actively fuelling our rage against other people for their own goals. we're not immune to that just because we think our cause is the right one

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Meta’s new app, Threads, has promised users a better experience than Twitter, but he is censoring users and offering no avenue for appeal.
Example:

.
Also, for those considering moving from Twitter to Threads — 87 million Facebook users had their data harvested by Cambridge Analytica that was used to target people during the 2016 election.

for a very brief moment, I'm gonna go all tinfoil hat conspiracy theory on main and say that honest to god I'm very scared that one day "AI art" (insert disclaimer here that it's not true AI etc etc you've already seen me rant about this pet peeve) and others will further enable mass disinformation campaigns for something (maybe elections). like. do you remember how much damage cambridge analytica has done to sway global politics. now imagine all that but with all this AI stuff. idk it's just. the horrors of being in the information age.
