D.E.B.S. at 20: a Queer Cult Classic

There is a secret film hidden within the shadowy sapphic corners of Letterboxd. Some call it escapist trash, some call it an underrated cult classic, fools call it a male fantasy. It calls itself D.E.B.S. As other early-2000s chick flicks like Charlie’s Angels and St. Trinian’s have been reevaluated and embraced for their candy-floss aesthetics and campy wit over the years, the lesbian community was quietly reclaiming its own equivalent with 2004’s D.E.B.S.

The precursor to contemporary high-concept lesbian films like Bottoms, the spy flick is filled with something that queer female moviegoers still often yearn for: fun. That includes Jordana Brewster and her era-defying eyebrows as the impeccably named supervillain Lucy Diamond, John Woo–style fight scenes that parody the action genre in the same way as Charlie’s Angels, and a cheerfully cheap aesthetic where spies run around in plaid schoolgirl skirts.

D.E.B.S. was written, directed, and edited by filmmaker Angela Robinson. While “unapologetically queer” might be an overused phrase, it does apply neatly to Robinson. The Chicago-born director’s first project was a short film called Chickula: Teenage Vampire, calling on the long history of vampiric queer women that began with 1872’s Carmilla.

Her love of playing with genre led her to later put a lesbian spin on the movie musical by writing the underappreciated Girltrash: All Night Long and exploring polyamory in a period biopic about the creators of Wonder Woman, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women. On the small screen, she also burnished her lesbian credentials by working on several episodes of The L Word.

When D.E.B.S. started life as a short film, Robinson described it as “a story about a trio of superspies who are all chicks. I love all the comic-book characters: Charlie’s Angels, Batman, Josie & the Pussycats … But I always wanted them to be gay and they never were, so I wrote my own.” Success at Sundance led to Sony snatching the short up and deciding that D.E.B.S. should be a full-length feature.

Two decades later, the joy of this movie lies in the details. The tone is immediately set by a gravelly voice-over telling us that there is a secret test hidden within the SAT to recruit young female superspies (and establishing that, like Bottoms, this is a film aware of genre archetypes and willing to push believability). Our main character Amy (Sara Foster) is an academic overachiever — like many lesbians overcompensating for their perceived failure to live up to social norms. Her perfect score on the secret SAT test makes it even more scandalous when she falls for the aforementioned supervillain Lucy Diamond.

Queer friend groups may delight over the nostalgic frosty eye shadow and lip gloss worn by the D.E.B.S. (which stands for “discipline, energy, beauty, strength,” naturally) at all times. Flip phones, CGI holographic screens, and Goldfrapp’s appearance on the soundtrack will also remind you that you’re watching a film made in the early 2000s. And many will squeal when they spot Holland Taylor, over a decade before she came out, as the academy’s head.

Admittedly, the special effects are goofy enough to cross over into comedy, especially when our girls are abseiling into a restaurant or climbing walls with plungers, and the lighting could be charitably described as resembling teen soap operas of that era. But the chemistry between Amy and Lucy is crackling enough that YouTube compilations of their scenes have racked up hundreds of thousands of views online. Their fun enemies-to-lovers plotline begins with the pair pointing guns at each other and quickly progresses to a whirlwind romance (the other D.E.B.S. think Amy’s been kidnapped and launch a national manhunt, just as many friend groups have had to organize rescue missions for lesbians on weeklong first dates).

You could argue that espionage serves as a metaphor for the closet and that Amy is such an effective spy because she’s used to lying to herself about her sexuality. But that almost seems like too much weight to put on this meringue confection of a genre spoof: Its campiness liberates the characters to inhabit a fun, exaggerated universe with no serious homophobia or consequences. Guns are used, but the so-called superspies have such consistently terrible aim that there are no real casualties. And Lucy Diamond’s supposedly nefarious crimes are all reversible — the murders pinned on her are revealed to be misunderstandings, and she returns all of her stolen goods in order to win Amy back.

When this live-action Totally Spies with a lesbian twist debuted, it only made $97,000 and was dismissed by critics. But there were enough moviegoing gays impressed by its snappy dialogue, fun romance, and stunning supporting cast (including Meagan Good, Jimmi Simpson, and Devon Aoki with a French accent) for its reputation to grow online over time. In forums and YouTube comment sections, young girls were asking, “Are there any lesbian films where they just fall in love and have fun and don’t die at the end?” Their answer was D.E.B.S.

born at the tail end of a blackberry winter, claire adler was known as the pastor's daughter long before she would come to be known as mare dellmount. in god's name, her father took up deadly snakes each sunday —  as did her mother, and their parents before them. copperhead rattlers, blow vipers, and timber rattlers alike graced the services in crockett pentecostal church, incorporated into the service on the word of the new testament –  "they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." it didn't matter that snake handling in church services was illegal in kentucky. serpent handling was the will of god —  if you were bit, they'd say it was him deciding that your time had come. her father was bit eight times before his luck finally ran out.

mare's childhood was spent equally between church, homeschooling, and sneaking onto her father's old pc in the dead of night  —  covering up the modem with a blanket so that the dial up wouldn't wake her sleeping parents, and turning around the photo of jesus on the desk so that he wouldn't know she'd watched avril lavigne's girlfriend music video five times in a row. her family, and by extension her, were backwoods as backwoods got — but mare knew enough of the outside world. she knew what her father did was illegal. she knew that the public en masse believed they were crazy, religious coots with a death wish. oftentimes, she thought she agreed.

their congregation was a close one, adverse to outsiders and even more adverse to the idea of losing one of their own to the outside world. with their patriarch gone, their community was in a state of disarray, and without a plan for how to move forward. money was a concern — pastor adler had done all of the church's finances himself, and had not deigned to share with anyone the method behind his madness. mare's apprehension as she raised her hand, adorned with outrageously chipped pink nail polish, was completely feigned. she'd always helped her father with his snake bites growing up. maybe she should go to school, become a doctor, or something — get them some real money.

the issue was hotly debated, but in the end it was decided she should go. the second she was carried across county lines by the train, claire adler died. in her place sat mare dellmount. if you'd asked her then, she'd swear up and down that she mostly kept her half of the bargain. she went to school, admission bolstered by stellar homeschooling grades. she became a nurse, and a decent one at that. by the time graduation rolled around, she was $30k in student loan debt, and there was no way on god's green earth she was going back into the serpent's den.

stratford county hospital was the first place that offered her good pay, and mare figured texas was as far away from crockett she could get while still living in the continental united states. still bogged down by debt, she worked doubles as often as she could. at night, she would go dancing, or cheating at pool, or just plain drinking. no longer in the business of limiting herself, mare pretty much lived her first two years in straton in a long string of indulgences. a few months ago, paranoid and afraid that she would lose the freedom that she'd found and so enjoyed, she called an anonymous crime tip line in kentucky and told them what had been going on in crockett. she doesn't know what befell them because of her call, and she can't bring herself to look it up.

these days, she's haunted by her past. she feels guilty for betraying her community — for leaving her mother behind. simultaneously, she lives in fear that someone from back then will find her and drag her back. she's thrown herself into work completely in an attempt to just ... get on with things. she's burned down her old life and salted the earth behind her — all she can do is move forward, and helping people at the hospital is the only thing that feels remotely redeeming.

she's pretty silent and generally gives off weird and off-putting vibes 😭😭 which is why she likes working in the nicu. babies don't look at you funny or care if you don't have something interesting or intelligent to say. they also don't mind a crazy thick kentucky accent.

What’s a dream role you’d cast David Oakes in if you were given the choice? 👀

i've always said that david should play robert dudley, the earl of leicester, because one thing about robbie is that he will always remain ambiguous. did he really love his wife amy robsart? was he the one who arranged her death to have the possibility of marrying the queen? also, did he really love elizabeth or did he just use her fondness for him to climb to the top? there are so many question marks all over robert, especially when his family all got executed for treason. he's also dashing, ambitious, sometimes ruthless yet passionate and intelligent. david oakes is 100% the type of character to play this role since he can add so many layers to this possibly morally gray persona and make him as humane as possible <3 (with natalie dormer playing elizabeth and holliday grainger playing amy robsart-dudley)

i also wanna see david play either arthur morgan or john marston because...well? bro loves the game lol

𝐒𝐘𝐌𝐁𝐎𝐋𝐒. 🎶 MUSICAL NOTES — what type of music does your oc like? do they listen to music very often? Canon Abigail is a fan of folk songs, especially from the Appalachian region as that is where she is born and those are the songs her father sang to her. She is also a fan of Joplin music, which was popular for the time period. She hates the music Dutch plays, though. She can appreciate some classical music, though! She prefers the lighter songs. Modern Au likes Dolly Parton, Wynonna��Judd, Maren Morris. She used to listen to Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson along with some Hank Williams Jr. with her father, but he died when she was seven. It’s painful for her to listen to them now. She also loves Madonna, George Michael, Amy Winehouse and Spice Girls. 💯 HUNDRED POINTS SYMBOL — share three random facts about your oc that others may not know. 1, She’s 100% demisexual. Her time as a sex worker has no barring on her sexuality. She was madly in love with John from the start and therefore had no problem sleeping with him. However, in a verse where she was dating someone else, she would absolutely need that emotional connection and sense of safety.

2. She doesn’t regret Jack, but she definitely struggled with post partum depression and if she has the Marston daughter, she struggles with it again. The first time, she felt incredibly alone and while she has a sense of loneliness the second time, she feels more loved.

3, She’s shy about her stretch marks, but she’s slowly learning to accept them. 💤 SLEEPING SIGN — is your oc a light sleeper or a heavy sleeper? how are their sleeping habits? Abigail is a very light sleeper. Part of it is from having to stay vigilant as a young girl in the orphanage, then as a sex worker, and as an outlaw. Even while safe in Beecher’s Hope, she’s still in survival mode. Modern Au is sadly the same as she was shifted from foster home to foster home. The stress affects her still and again, she knows she’s safe, but she doesn’t feel it. 🔱 TRIDENT EMBLEM — can your oc swim? do they enjoy swimming? Answered here! 🔺 RED TRIANGLE POINTED UP — does your oc know how to use any weapons? Yes. She knows how to use a revolver, a shotgun and very basic knife attacks. She also knows her poisons and isn’t afraid to use blunt objects. Modern Au owns a shot gun, a revolver, and brass knuckles. 🔶 LARGE ORANGE DIAMOND — does your oc know cpr? do they have any other medical expertise? Canon: Yes, if you pay attention, she takes the medic role quite often. She cared for John, but she also seems to have helped Charles with his hand and potentially Arthur with his gunshot wound. She also seems to lightly care for Hosea as well. She also cared for John’s fever and wounds as well as Jack’s early illness. Plus, being an orphan and a sex worker, she had no one to care for her but herself. I see her helping her fellow sex workers. I can also see her stitching wounds and having no choice but to learn how to deal with bullet wounds even if it isn’t bullet extraction. Modern AU: Yes! She learned CPR in high school as well as first aid basics. She also knows how to dress wounds and took excellent care of John after his wolf attack. Again, being in foster care , she had to care for herself. I can see her learning how to work with stitches and other first aid basics. 🚫 PROHIBITED — does your oc drink/smoke? do they do it regularly, or is it more on occasion or for special events? No. Abigail doesn’t smoke in canon or modern. I hc that it makes her cough worse in canon and that modern au Abigail just doesn’t like the smell and doesn't want it as an example for Jack.
