Not quite as many as January, but still not bad! A better mix of genres, though it's interesting that I read mainly romance in January, and not as many in February.
I have a few still going (Wool, Head Like a Hole, A Light in the Dark, Never Caught, others probably), that I will hopefully finish up in March.

I feel that during the first coffee date walk through the market, rye has a fraction of a millisecond's kneejerk trauma freakout of '...wait. wait. am I really catching feelings for a rich boy again. with how that went down last time. am I truly that stupid' (once derogatorily referred to quite openly at a party as 'young master anaxas' pet mortalitasi' to which the young master anaxas only grinned and shrugged and STILL you don't break up with his smug controlling ass for good for six more months because you have a desperate bottomless yearning pit where your self respect should go, twice shy lol). and then he actually looks at lucanis standing next to him getting harding spearmint to help with bad dreams and generally being so quietly thoughtful and sweet through the prosaic yet necessary medium of grocery shopping it makes me feel a little unwell to truly contemplate. and rye is like '*the softest fondest eyes anyone has ever turned on anything* ...you know what. I suspect we don't have to worry about that repeating, I think we're probably safe. I am comfortable being this level of stupid. (slowly dawning marital intent even at this stage)'.
(part of the reason rye buys NONE of illario's bullshit at all right from the beginning is that he's basically vaccinated against this exact type of dude after that relationship lol. charming suave guy who in the beginning pays you a lot of lavish attention and takes pains to make you feel special every time you're in a room with him -- but shallowly and mostly, it slowly dawns on you, when there's something he wants from you (and he's often doing it at the expense of someone else, raising you up to put someone else down and you won't believe this... it can turn into a seesaw at a whim. yay). and beneath that there's just a seething pit of resentment and inferiority complexes and bitterness left to fester until he can make it everyone else's problem and that IS going to start to bubble up between the cracks with you too if you stick around for long enough. no thank you been there done that wasted my youth and potential on it and all I got was this lousy shiny set of new emotional intimacy issues haunting me for life! trust me illario I HAVE, as it were, chosen the wrong dellamorte before, which is exactly how I know I didn't this time. go get him lucanis I've got your coffee
hilarious mental image: rye and illario sitting quietly together while everyone else is busy milling about during a cursed dellamorte family dinner (the vibes are so bad. you know the vibes are bad. sitting as still as you can and hoping for calm skies is your best bet without lucanis or teia favourite child privileges to work with) and rye out of the blue gazing thoughtfully into nothing over the edge of his glass with half-lidded eyes to go 'you know. you remind me a lot of my ex. not in a good way' and illario with absolutely no shame and hilariously also something that's the closest he ever gets to real sympathy going 'yeah, I get that a lot'. best talk those two ever had, unironically. their bond leveled up to its final form that day. *soulsborne boss defeated text* MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING REACHED)
#idly trying to decide what nevarran great house rye's shitheel early twenties boyfriend was part of#(possibly as one of the piddliest side branches of that house too b/c between that and the youngest son thing..... bad news)#there would be something especially delicious about him being a van markham of course. adds some Layers#to the baron van markham situation. but maybe that's TOO neat. nobles can just suck as a Class (as they do). I must Contemplate#I do really love the idea I'm going with here that it could be the youngest son of the duke of cumberland (so an anaxas)#(perhaps grandchild? slightly unclear how the numbers work out there we have too little information to go on I think)#who made so much trouble back home in cumberland they basically sent him off to the capital to raise hell over there lol#the classic 'god idk send him off to an aunt and she'll either straighten him out or they'll kill each other#either way he won't be my problem for the duration' move. oh the tribulations of an afterthought of a son no one really needed#(funny headcanon to make that the pentaghasts can't come up with a solid direct heir to king marcus to save his at least#seven-fold resurrected ass. while the duke of cumberland has heirs. maker help him but does he have heirs the house is full of them#where are they all coming from. his wife staring directly into the camera like she's on the office)#dragon age#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age: the veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers#oc: Ellaryen Ingellvar#Lucanis Dellamorte#rook x lucanis#rookanis#illario dellamorte#doing coffee with the crows after the city choice adds quite a bit here lol. among other things it opens the distinct possiblity#that rook has overheard lucanis talk about wyverns in banter and the dagger is a more purposefully chosen thing#much like lucanis' cake choice is dependent on rook's beverage preferences later on. their freaks match#gifts to give your special person to tell them you've done deep research on them but like not in a stalker way#this post went off to places I hadn't expected. but love the rye and illario stuff that turned up here lmao like yeah that feels about righ

tbh one of my soft goals when writing class swap baron is to aim for a no-stan quota. it will be a futile attempt but one is not at leisure to abandon the great work

"Instead of boxing, the Black Baron/Penelope should have used a sword during the fight with Sly. Not only would it have foreshadowed the fight with LeFwee, but also it would have given us more instances of women with swords... *dreamy sigh*"

turning over the idea of a marmalade fic set in the somewhat distant future. after the events of the movie, marmalade and otis kick off an even more passionate game of cat and mouse. she may have always known who was after her but after he has a face to go along with who he's chasing it goes from a job he's passionate about to something more like obsession.
they get close to one another, but never as close as they were when they were in the cell. it's fleeting glances from across busy rooms. it's the back of a head or the sight of a familiar profile rounding corner. it's notes left behind and intercepted.
until enough time goes by that otis gets assigned to a case that needs his full attention and then some. the kind of bad guy that makes him sick to think about, doing the kind of evil shit that's hard to imagine thinking of let alone doing. he needs help and he knows it, cause to reach the guy in any way that matters he's going to need something more than the long arm of the law.
anyway then it's a job with an older, more settled version of the two of them. where their edges have been filed down by time and they have a history to reference and fall back on. time has given them a better idea of how their pieces fit together and as they work this job they're figuring out how being back together in person changes the fit.
i just imagine them running away from some kind of danger, otis questioning everything that got them there while marmlade is cheerfully chattering like "we're a team, finally, partners in crime. see when we met all that running and chasing was romantic but it wasn't real. this is real!"
of course by the end they're running away together so they can lay low to avoid any fallout from catching the guy and saving the day

Keeping seeing people talk about the D&D movie (Honor Among Thieves) lately and how it “shouldn’t have bombed” and “deserved better”.
Do not get me wrong, it absolutely did not deserve to bomb, it’s and awesome movie. But I feel like we’re forgetting some key context here.
The audience for this movie is much smaller than most silver screen productions. D&D is MASSIVE, bigger than it has ever been before, but it’s audience is still pretty niche when you consider movie goers in general. It started behind, not everyone was going to go out to see it.
More over, it’s a bit of Wizard’s own fault. Right before the movie came out, there was the whole One D&D controversy where Wizards essentially said “hey we want to have the rights to your homebrew content, and you need to pay us to publish or create anything using the dnd system.” Which is a lot of stuff guys. 3rd party adventure books, tons of creators and independent D&D based businesses, not to mention a plethora of video games. Like yanking that license would have killed hundreds if not thousands of businesses. People were (very justly) upset, meaning a lot of people did not go to the movie to avoid supporting wizards of the coast.
So like, did the movie deserve better? Absolutely. But there are very clear reasons why it did not make the money the studios wanted it to. I love that movie, I would love a dozen sequels, but I would also love it if Wizards could keep their foot out of their mouth for more than a month.
Maybe we’ll get a Pathfinder movie some day.

Thank you @figuringthengsout for tagging me <3333
rules: list ten books that have stayed with you in some way. don’t take but a few minutes, and don’t think too hard - they don’t have to be the “right” or “great” works, just the ones that have touched you
Soo tired it’s very late so I’ll be brief. In order I read them, not in order of importance to me
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - every mother and her daughter should read. My first profound read.
Crime and Punishment - the triumph of my fourteenth year. The Quest for the Perfect Translation pt.1 (it’s Nicolas Slater’s version. You’re welcome)
Ordinary People - found a similar person in Conrad. And cried. A lot.
The Plague - hahaha covid. Incredible. Began my love of Camus and then I got into philosophy and then died a little bit
All Quiet on the Western Front - the most influential a book has been on my life. Started the WWI interest and got me into the trench poets and started my research paper and so much more
The metamorphosis - learned so much about disability and what my family is. Read it so many times.
Inferno - got me through a rough spot. The Quest for the Perfect Translation pt.2 (I SWEAR BY Dorothy L Sayers. She’s incredible)
Patrick Modiano Missing Person - I can’t even talk about this one except to say that it changed me and that I want to write like him
Eichmann in Jerusalem - began my love of nonfiction and journalism and my obsession with the guardian and the Atlantic and the New Yorker, etc and now I spend so much money on newspapers and magazines I blame Arendt and her terrific reporting.
I didn’t include any poetry plays or short fiction because that would be cheating. Would require a whole other list for those.
And, note, these are the books that impacted me profoundly. Not exactly pleasureful books I got into, how it works for me in fandom. That would, again, be another list. (Aftg, sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie)

The Wolf Among The Hounds: Baron Vi
Tumblr media
Silco raised Vi and Jinx from being found on the bridge that night. Their lives changed and Vi was quick to learn to be crafty and mindful of decisions while also being swift of a fist as well. She is a powerhouse in her own right even if Silco favors Jinx more over her. Vi is perfectly all right with that even if she knows how his empire runs and how to keep people under heel.
She grew up to have a mind that is quick to spot trouble and see through facades well. Quiet when on the guard, she is observant above all else and swift in afflicting pain when warranted. Sevika taught her quite well on how to brawl and she perfected her craft. When not able to swing a fist, she is also deadly with a knife or anything else she can get her hands around.
Thought of as the Wolf among the Hounds, Vi has made it clear The Lanes are her prowling ground and she will keep order within it. She respects certain baron territories however and has never given Baroness Caitlyn a reason to worry for her neutral ground. Vi respects her laws and her woman as she often is a guest within the brothel house to quite a few of the women on occasion. She is always respectful and gentle with them. However, she is extremely loyal to Baroness Caitlyn. Anyone who is foolish enough to try anything on her will find themselves face-to-face with The Wolf personally. While Caitlyn can easily handle herself with her own strong skills, Vi is still extremely protective. She has always been that way for Caitlyn since back from being kids and meeting for the first time. That streak only grew as they grew up.
Her other loyalties will always tie to her sister, Queen Jinx.
