Wildwood Cemetery has a whole walk through the woods with graves still scattered throughout. This photo shows one off to the right of the path. These two photos are on either end of the same path, weaving through the woods. 10/10 for the unique ambiance.

Aye - Aye - Aye! This Halloween I had a gig at UMASS Amherst and had a seat in the lobby where everyone had to walk past me to get to the dining hall! I had taken 100 free crystal 'friends' with me - and gave every single one of them away! I was only doing one-card readings, and calculated that I had done @ 130 readings. Was supposed to be 5 - 9 p.m. plus food, but I didn't stop doing readings until @ 9:30 and had to pack and go upstairs and find food! It was a very interesting evening! Some kind person got me a hot tea for my throat about half-way through.

In this view from the Mill Street bridge in North Amherst, swimmers sit on the dam at Puffer’s Pond in 2016. The town has applied for a state grant that would help pay for development of an improvement plan at the pond, including the dam and dike.
Amherst requests state grant to develop Puffer’s Pond improvement plan
"If the money is awarded later this year, engineers will be hired to examine the pond and propose fixes. They will take readings on the depth of the water in the pond, get an understanding of what’s on the bottom of the pond, and take depth of sediment cores and examine what’s in the sediment.
Such a project could help the town to decide whether to undertake dredging of the pond, last done in 1986, when 100,000 cubic yards of material were removed.
“It does move the needle on dredging,” Ziomek said. “From that information we should be able to extrapolate the volume of sediment that needs to be removed from the pond.”

Salome Dancer
Artist: Robert Henri (American, 1865-1929)
Date: 1909
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Mead Art Museum at Amherst College, Amherst, MA, United States
Description
Broad, slashing strokes give powerful shape to this defiant female figure standing with parted legs, a pose more athletic - even pugilistic - than seductive. Her oppositional posturing matched the painter’s contrary aesthetic sensibilities. The Realist painter Henri sought a provocative and timely subject in Salome, the biblical figure who served as her mother’s dutiful pawn in facilitating King Herod’s assassination of John the Baptist. By the late nineteenth century Salome had evolved into a far more aggressive and decadent creature, as witnessed in Oscar Wilde’s notorious play of 1891. That Henri adopted the theme in 1909 suggests his desire to capitalize on Salome’s high currency for controversy, which had been confirmed by the New York Metropolitan Opera’s scandal-provoking performance of Richard Strauss’s Salome (based on Wilde’s play) in 1907. The gleam of amusement that enhances Salome’s haughty expression slyly evokes her complicity in constructing Henri’s own reputation as a radical painter.

Saw a post where you mentioned you broke into an abandoned mental hospital during college and I gotta ask: Did you go to GCSU? if not, how many fucking colleges have abandoned mental hospitals nearby?
I went to the University of Massachusetts Amherst, actually
it was the Belchertown State School in Belchertown, MA, which no longer exists (although there were, from 1992 to 2006, two abandoned mental hospitals nearby- BSS and the Northampton State Hospital)
also, to clarify a bit, my friend and I didn't "break in" in a literal sense. that just sounds more dramatic than "a door was off its hinges in one building and another had a ground-floor window open." my friend, a lifelong local to the area, had broken into boarded-up buildings on the campus with a crowbar before, but I was concerned about the police station next door and had never done urban exploration before. so we stuck to places we could enter without any Breaking required
I should also add that we never had any intent to vandalize, steal, etc. we only wanted to look around and that's all we did. as with many such places, BSS was shut down largely due to inhumane conditions, and we didn't want to make light of the ill treatment people had suffered there. we just wanted to see the abandoned buildings
it was wild. looking back, I'm not sure Enter An Abandoned Hospital Building With Only One Friend, A Phone That's Getting Sporadic Reception In Said Building, And A Powerful Flashlight is something I'd do again, even though it was the middle of the day- they don't show you in fiction that when those windows are boarded up, that's heavy-duty plywood. it's not just a few measly little planks at an angle. it was DARK in there, punctuated only by places where skylights had been left uncovered, and the occasional room where the window coverings had fallen or been prised away. One of those rooms had an antique wheelchair in it, near the window; one of the eeriest things I've ever personally seen
navigating stairwells was a bit of a nightmare. it had rained recently, too, so the floors were wet and gritty. I ended up ruining a cheap pair of ballet flats and throwing them away afterwards
and for weeks afterwards, I couldn't stop imagining every building I entered in the same state. now that I knew what decades of abandonment looked like
anyway they tore BSS down in 2016, the year after I graduated. I think it had developed a problem with arsonists, and they'd been wanting to do something with the land anyway. plans for an assisted living facility have gone back and forth since 2014, finally being approved last year according to a news article I just found. not sure if it's been actually built yet or what
#ask#western mass#it was not Kirkbride AKA Classic Victorian Gothic Asylum; the buildings were newer#Kirkbride hospitals like Northampton State were designed to admit more light so that might have actually been less creepy#but NSH was gone before I hit high school let alone college#anyway now UMass has zero nearby abandoned mental hospitals#mortalmab

Yehudit Shadur (Israeli, 1928 - 2011), Deft Hands That Devise Skillful Works, Papercut, 40 × 33 in.
Exodus 35:35
They have been given the wisdom of heart to work all manner of crafts, of the designer and the weaver and the embroiderers in colors, in blue, in purple, in scarlet, and in fine twined linen, even of them of deft hands that do any workmanship and of those that devise skillful works
In an effort to gather works of beauty for the Tabernacle, the artisans, such as Bezalel, that G-d had endowed with “divine spirit of skill, ability, and knowledge of craft” were summoned to contribute their crafts in the presence of the Lord, as Moses had commanded.
This mural papercut was made for the former Fiber Art Center in Amherst, MA as a way to honor all manner of crafts. x
