PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on the CD pressing of "Voodoo-U," the second studio album from Belgian electronic music group LORDS OF ACID. It was released in 1994 under Rick Rubin's American Recordings label.

Q: "In "Voodoo-U" from 1994 and "Our Little Secret," from 1997 the sound is a bit more industrial. Did you think that you had done everything in New Beat?"

PRAGA KHAN: " — In those days, Lords of Acid’s music was a combination of the late New Beat/early techno sound and the US industrial sound. We used the bass lines and synth riffs of the European sound and added industrial guitar sounds. This created a new sound. In 1994, when "Voodoo-U" got released, I got a lot of phone calls from famous American rock stars who were raving about the album. To me it was just a logical step in the evolution of the sound of Lords of Acid."

Unfortunately this rendition of Blue ultimately did not make the cut of the self titled album but would appear in acoustic form as a bonus track on Serj Tankian’s solo debut Elect the Dead.

The albums that give their musicians another success late in their careers can influence their standings. For instance, Santana continues to be reminded of Supernatural and I assume many think Johnny Cash on American Recordings is the whole deal. The latter in particular should be seen as a double edged sword. On the one hand the discs made Johnny Cash cool again for a certain subset of music listener that wouldn't give him a chance, whereas on the other the series made him sound gloomier than what he was. Sure, the darkness lies a lot in his work – no one could ever deny that without sounding like a buffoon –, yet Mr. Cash also had a wicked sense of humour along with many other dimensions American Recordings did show that. However, the later reception seem to have forgotten this.
