Two PhD students walking home after a night out in Montreal's west end decided to skirt around a police operation by stepping into the empty road.
Within minutes they found themselves slammed against a fence in what they say was a violent arrest — one with his arms twisted to the near breaking point and the other his legs spread so far apart that his pants tore and both his knees were injured.
"It was confusing because I didn't really understand what was going on," said Amaechi Okafor, a Black man from Nigeria who came to Montreal three years ago to pursue a doctorate in history at Concordia University.
Speaking during a Friday news conference organized by the Center for Research-Action on Race Relations (CRARR), Okafor's voice shook as he recounted what happened at around 3 a.m. on St-Jacques Street in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce (NDG) on July 22.

On Monday, May 15 we hosted our official launch event “Symphony of Disruption” and brought together C-suite leaders, media execs, music industry icons, musicians, artists and tech innovators for a celebration and to explore the forces that are disrupting the business of music.
ON_Discourse has a bold plan to transform tech discourse with a new membership-focused media company and during its launch event we hosted discussions with Oana Ruxandra, Warner Music's Chief Digital Officer, Máuhan M Zonoozy, Spotify's Head of Innovation and Run the Jewels’ Manager, Amaechi Uzoigwe and Academy Award winning musician and DJ, Questlove.
The founders of ON_Discourse include Dan Gardner, co-founder and executive chairman of Code and Theory, and Toby Daniels, former CEO of Crowdcentric Media and founder of Social Media Week, along with over 30 other leaders in business and technology.
The core team includes two veteran journalists and strategists –myself as head of content and product, and Kelly Bourdet executive editor. I have held key roles at Reuters, Circa, The Wall Street Journal and Crain Communications and spent five years in television at The Daily Show. Bourdet worked in and contributed to creative, fast-paced newsrooms at CNN Business, Gizmodo, Vocativ and Refinery29.

John Uzoma Ekwugha Amaechi OBE (November 26, 1970) is an English psychologist, consultant, and former professional basketball player. He played college basketball at Vanderbilt and Penn State, and professional basketball in the NBA. He played in France, Greece, Italy, and the UK. He has worked as a psychologist and consultant, establishing his company Amaechi Performance Systems.
In February 2007, he became the first former NBA player to publicly come out as gay after doing so in his memoir Man in the Middle. He has been regarded as “one of the world’s most high-profile gay athletes”.
He was born in Boston to an English mother and a Nigerian Igbo father. He and his two younger sisters were raised by their mother in Stockport, England. He first played basketball at the age of 17. He signed for the Manchester United, now known as the Manchester Eagles. His form for Manchester United saw him move to the US to play high school basketball at St. John’s Jesuit High School in Toledo. He began playing college basketball at Vanderbilt but transferred to Penn State, where he was a two-time First Team Academic All-American selection. He became a motivational public speaker and a mentor for area youth.
He spoke about his sexuality on ESPN’s Outside the Lines program.
He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science by Manchester Metropolitan University in recognition of his achievements not only as an athlete and broadcaster, and for his charitable work with the National Literacy Trust, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, and the establishment of the ABC Foundation to encourage children to become involved in sport and their community.
He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2011 Birthday Honours for services to sport and the voluntary sector. He was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate of Arts by the University of East London. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
