a lot of the talk about Bushnell is reminding me of my "the "mentally ill" have their right to violence revoked" thing again
like. When you're deemed mentally ill, suddenly you must stress how you are more likely to be a victim of violence than a perpetrator to be deemed as human. Because any violence you commit, as a crazy person, is bad. It cannot carry rationale, because you are crazy. If I, as an autistic person, hit someone who was hurting me and got in legal trouble, I can be referred to as just "crazy" instead of as a victim responding to an aggressor. It's an underdiscussed area of dehumanization.
And that's before we talk about intersectionality, and before we talk about how this factors into the idea of ODD, and the "violent" responses patients have to doctors (including those who simply aren't white, and those forced on meds that hurt them, and those resisting sexual assault, and-).
But this is not just interpersonally political, it is political at scale. Black men were targeted by schizophrenia diagnoses during the Civil Rights era (and this is also around when schizophrenia became a "scary" illness). The crazy cannot have valid political criticisms, as a movement (remember that being "crazy" is a vector of oppression abd marginalization) or as individuals in other movements.
Ive seen both the sentiment of "oh Aaron is gonna be slandered as crazy" and exactly what the sentiment warns of- "we can't valorize suicide from the mentally ill". And the first isn't wrong, because society at large does view the "crazy" as lacking political agency, but it's lacking.
Bushnell had been trying very hard to get out of his military contract without being imprisoned at best, while witnessing genocide and knowing he was complicit. He may not have had clinical depression normally, but that would inspire a mental rational response of situational depression (and yes, mental health issues can be a rational response to horrible circumstances). Further, I know of instances of self immolation that WERE done by people who did have long standing mental health issues and were done to protest the treatment they'd experienced that caused them and that resulted from their existence. Mental illness and divergence from the norm is more complicated than just "these people are incapable of rationality, they are incapable of political thought, and they are incapable of agency".

Time to cry genuine tears as I realize if trump wins the election I will likely have to move very far away from everything and everyone I've ever known and loved <3 I'm sorry but people saying they're not gonna vote bc "both suck" genuinely GENUINELY makes me sick as someone whose life will be directly threatened if the very obviously far worse ghoul gets into office. Who the fuck does that help. Genuinely who is helped by abstaining. Yes they are both fucking god awful and terrible I hope they burn in hell forever and ever but also one threatens to gut every minority group in this country ALONGSIDE continuing if not WORSENING what the other shithead is doing anyway. I'm PRIVILEGED by the fact that I can likely just move, most can't. Most WILL be facing death. Many will be facing mass deportation to a country they may not have ever set foot in, that they may not even speak the language of. Sorry to fucking fearmonger or whatever sorry sorry but as a transgender latino I'm facing being forcefully ripped out of a beautiful culturally rich place I was hoping to live and die in while some of you are hemming and hawing about how not voting is the "right choice". Now is not the fucking time and abstaining right here right now means abetting harm to every minority in this country. Fuck you. Vote.

How do I keep this dying plant alive?
I think it's an African Violet but I'm not 100% sure. It was a bit lopsided and wonky when I got it but since then it's gotten worse and lost a ton of leaves. I don't know what's wrong. Maybe it's the cold?
Any and all advice welcome because I don't know how to take care of plants like at all

I just gotta say. After watching tng and moving on to ds9, I can't speak for any of the other captains but. Any of the scenes with Picard that are supposed to be moving or inspiring or emotional- ain't shit compared to the fucking HEART that Avery Brooks put into playing Captain Sisko

[ID: A video clip showing a Black person in a green coat interviewing an elderly white person holding up a flag, with more protesters in the background displaying Palestinian flags.
The interviewer asks, "Why is it important for you to be here today?"
The protester responds, "Well, uh, I'm Jewish, I'm Israeli, my parents were the only survivors of their families from the Holocaust. They both survived Auschwitz. I'm not going to support genocide am I?
"I'm here with the Palestinians, and we are here with Palestine, because we don't believe that what the British government is doing is correct. The British government is supporting this genocide! It's arming Israel, it's financing Israel.
"BBC and the other media here is supporting genocide. This is illegal. This is immoral. We don't agree with it, we will never agree with it, and as Jews -- and myself as Israeli -- I am totally against it, and we will continue to be against it.
There are now more than 60 such events in the whole of Britain, uh, people don't want to support this. They are against this government on so many other issues, but especially on this one."
Another elderly white protester next to the first joins in, leaning forward to add:
"And, also, this didn't start on October the 7th. In 1948, Palestinian villages, hundreds of them --"
Another elderly protester interjects specifically, "500 of them".
The second protestor nods and continues, "were demolished, thousands of Palestinians, innocent men, women, and children were slaughtered, and seven-hundred and fifty thousand Palestinian refugees were created. That's when it started, and it hasn't stopped since!"
End ID.]

In terms of successfully getting a candidate that is not Trump into the white house, the way I see it is:
Voting for Harris is a safe choice. I don't think she is a good candidate. She is pro-fracking, wants to be tougher than Trump when it comes to the border, and according to her team, will never have an arms embargo against Israel on her platform. It feels like she is trying to lose the election. It feels like voting for a Republican. But as the democratic party nominee, she has an extremely high chance of actually winning the election.
Voting third party is a risky choice. Risk is not inherently bad nor good. You have to be prepared to take a risk. This is the risk being taken in this particular situation:
A 6-3, possibly even a 7-2, conservative majority in the Supreme Court for the next 40 years.
Supreme Court Justices Alito, Scalia, and Thomas will retire if Trump gets elected. Trump will appoint 3 young, thoroughly conservative justices to the Supreme Court who will have promised to bend to his every will, clear pathways for him, and not check his power. They will have lifetime appointments. This is not even taking into account if any other conservative justice steps down. And if something were to happen to Justices Jackson, Sotomayor, or Kagan, that would open up another seat Trump will get to fill.
Trump is using the possibility of him getting to fill Scotus seats as a huuuuuuge draw for his campaign. If conservative voters think he is a delirious old man who needs to shut his yapper but really like what the Supreme Court has done in the past 4 years*, it's not a personality contest for those voters. It's about seeing stuff get done, which it has thanks to the current Supreme Court.
In my humble opinion: All of that risk is not worth it over One Single Election.
*overturn Roe v Wade (abortion rights), strike down the Chevron Doctrine (eliminate gov agencies' power to do their job regulate corporations), Trump v USA (the president essentially can never be criminally prosecuted), and they are still very eager to make mifeprestone illegal they just need someone to present a good enough argument in court.
