a lot of the talk about Bushnell is reminding me of my "the "mentally ill" have their right to violence revoked" thing again
like. When you're deemed mentally ill, suddenly you must stress how you are more likely to be a victim of violence than a perpetrator to be deemed as human. Because any violence you commit, as a crazy person, is bad. It cannot carry rationale, because you are crazy. If I, as an autistic person, hit someone who was hurting me and got in legal trouble, I can be referred to as just "crazy" instead of as a victim responding to an aggressor. It's an underdiscussed area of dehumanization.
And that's before we talk about intersectionality, and before we talk about how this factors into the idea of ODD, and the "violent" responses patients have to doctors (including those who simply aren't white, and those forced on meds that hurt them, and those resisting sexual assault, and-).
But this is not just interpersonally political, it is political at scale. Black men were targeted by schizophrenia diagnoses during the Civil Rights era (and this is also around when schizophrenia became a "scary" illness). The crazy cannot have valid political criticisms, as a movement (remember that being "crazy" is a vector of oppression abd marginalization) or as individuals in other movements.
Ive seen both the sentiment of "oh Aaron is gonna be slandered as crazy" and exactly what the sentiment warns of- "we can't valorize suicide from the mentally ill". And the first isn't wrong, because society at large does view the "crazy" as lacking political agency, but it's lacking.
Bushnell had been trying very hard to get out of his military contract without being imprisoned at best, while witnessing genocide and knowing he was complicit. He may not have had clinical depression normally, but that would inspire a mental rational response of situational depression (and yes, mental health issues can be a rational response to horrible circumstances). Further, I know of instances of self immolation that WERE done by people who did have long standing mental health issues and were done to protest the treatment they'd experienced that caused them and that resulted from their existence. Mental illness and divergence from the norm is more complicated than just "these people are incapable of rationality, they are incapable of political thought, and they are incapable of agency".
#cipher talk#Aaron Bushnell#Ask to tag#Self immolation#Suicide tw#I'm thinking about how like. Chloe Sagal did what she did to protest how she was treated as a mentally ill trans woman and highlighted#Her mental illness and struggle with homelessness primarily. And it WAS a political protest#The only really. Sensible thing I've seen on this about how it was a suicide was 1) someone pointing out some people may relapse in#Response to this WITHOUT delegitimizing his actions and sharing helpline sources#And 2) another person pointing out it'd be absurd to accuse hunger strikers of promoting eating disorders#Like. You know what I think soldiers who are complicit in genocide probably DO develop mental health problems#And I see the idea that they do used in some pretty batshit ways recently!#But so- so fucking what#Resistance fighters and genocide victims have mental health issues too#Why is it for soldiers ignored or used to dehumanize victims until of the soldiers turns is gun away from them?#What's next am I gonna watch people delegitimize the actions of Palestinian resistance and the Bielskis and fucking#Unistʼotʼen as the actions of people who 'just have mental health issues' and therefore can't be political?#We also have the similar protests of Black people (two in the last 6 months) being swept aside

Time to cry genuine tears as I realize if trump wins the election I will likely have to move very far away from everything and everyone I've ever known and loved <3 I'm sorry but people saying they're not gonna vote bc "both suck" genuinely GENUINELY makes me sick as someone whose life will be directly threatened if the very obviously far worse ghoul gets into office. Who the fuck does that help. Genuinely who is helped by abstaining. Yes they are both fucking god awful and terrible I hope they burn in hell forever and ever but also one threatens to gut every minority group in this country ALONGSIDE continuing if not WORSENING what the other shithead is doing anyway. I'm PRIVILEGED by the fact that I can likely just move, most can't. Most WILL be facing death. Many will be facing mass deportation to a country they may not have ever set foot in, that they may not even speak the language of. Sorry to fucking fearmonger or whatever sorry sorry but as a transgender latino I'm facing being forcefully ripped out of a beautiful culturally rich place I was hoping to live and die in while some of you are hemming and hawing about how not voting is the "right choice". Now is not the fucking time and abstaining right here right now means abetting harm to every minority in this country. Fuck you. Vote.
#hashtag apparently unpopular take I don't want bad to get worse. sorry for being brown but I am not your fucking collateral damage#we can protest together as a semi functioning country when our rights aren't threatened to be ripped apart if we don't collectively lock in#like I get it I understand that the idea is that if we protest with our votes#we might be able to force biden to stop funding israel#which like. ok! respectable#but listen to me#regardless of what you threaten. you need to vote blue in the end. you fucking understand me#abstaining AT THE POLLS is not going to do anything#if trump wins yea the dems will prbbly go “wow we should've listened” but also trump will be president and it's game over#there will be no “next time the dems will try harder” because we will be in a facist hellstate and getting deported arrested or dying

Someone on my free blaze was SOOOOO pissed I blazed it because “this is how the average American voter engages with politics” sounds like SOMEONE didn’t have their hamed burger and a cokey cola and some American milk chocolate today!!!!!!
#no this actually has me fuming#I’m queer and disabled and have been actively involved in leftist political activism since I was 15#I’m also genuinely devastated and rightfully incredibly angry#I am terrified for my bipoc friends and for my marriage. I am terrified for female bodily autonomy#I’m SO sorry I made a little jokey in the wake of an absolutely devastating political decision my country made#they notably had posted about politics once in ten hours and it was ‘boohoo America suckssss’#blogging is NOT activism and I’m not saying that they need to post for their actions to have weight#I’m saying it’s bizarre for them to be pressed I made a joke on tumblr when they themselves are relatively non-political on tumblr#I’ll put a /j next time#had to delete tag earlier but I was literally cutting class to go to protests over school shootings demanding safer gun laws at 15. like.#girl hop off my dick#I door knocked for local and national causes all throughout college. like.#anyway those are the tags I had to delete. had a typo bad in both 😭

i wish trying to do things with groups of people was not the most horrible time wasting activity on earth
#just went to local palestine action group meeting because i wanted to figure out if i could carpool to protest this weekend and the answer#was yes but then i spent the next hour and 15 minutes standing in a circle with people repeating the same things back to each other#like ok we are all here because we know it's bad. can we not talk endlessly in circles PLEASE#they did have other things planned but their speaker couldn't make it or whatever but like a bunch of people turned up anyway and i feel#like we could have accomplished something besides talking about how bad genocide is and what documentary they're wanting to show later#i should have known better and just emailed but whatever.....i did connect with someone i can get a ride with who lives in my town but then#they did not offer me a ride back when they left and i wasnt sure if it was socially acceptable to ask so i didnt so then i had to walk 20#minutes to the bus stop and supposedly the bus is coming in a couple minutes but of course. it won't#i'm so annoyed lmao i'm not going to get home until almost 9 and its going to be pitch black and there are no streetlights and i already#barely know where i'm going#not usually one to experience hanger but i definitely have barely eaten anything today and am angry but maybe for separate reasons#i can't even decide what i want for dinner!!!! goddammit#if i didn't have tomorrow off i might get lost in the ocean fr#me

How do I keep this dying plant alive?
I think it's an African Violet but I'm not 100% sure. It was a bit lopsided and wonky when I got it but since then it's gotten worse and lost a ton of leaves. I don't know what's wrong. Maybe it's the cold?
Any and all advice welcome because I don't know how to take care of plants like at all
#i got it at a fundraiser thing last week#and then carried though a protest and like 3 hours of public transport#so maybe it got knocked up a bit then?#or it could just be bad conditions#but if it's the cold how do i fix that?#i cant afford heating bills for me let alone a plant#maybe a little hot air thing i put next to it#it could be lack of light maybe#it is by a window but its just been rain and gray all week#or am i watering it wrong#help#plants#gardening#horticulture#how am i meant to be a hot plant dad if i csnt even keep this little guy alive#i am emotionally attached to this stupid plant#it was a palestine fundraiser and watching the it die is fucking depressing#i cant even help the stupid plant

trying to navigate colonizer guilt to a privileged person of colour was not something I was trained for and I think there should be a crash course or something holy jesus
#“it's easier for you to donate to Palestine and stay informed because you're white” uhmmm#I know for a fact you could easily send over $30 and forget about it the very next day but erm#“its different for me because I am first generation canadian”#fun fact so were the first white people who came here. so are all the white europeans who still come here#my dad is first generation canadian#I know it's not that simple Obviously but to use it as a shield or justification for passivity and inaction in every. single. conversation.#barking barking barking#“I don't want to think about it because I want to set roots and I don't want to feel guilty for living in this country/on indigenous land”#cool!! so do I! so does everyone. navigating that and learning how to live in ways that reduce harm is The Whole Point of this conversation#in the first place#but yeah no I shouldn't encourage people to attend protests or stay informed because well.#y'know the whole reason I do it is because im white. and it's just so easy and simple and requires no research or energy#its not because I care. or anything

[ID: A video clip showing a Black person in a green coat interviewing an elderly white person holding up a flag, with more protesters in the background displaying Palestinian flags.
The interviewer asks, "Why is it important for you to be here today?"
The protester responds, "Well, uh, I'm Jewish, I'm Israeli, my parents were the only survivors of their families from the Holocaust. They both survived Auschwitz. I'm not going to support genocide am I?
"I'm here with the Palestinians, and we are here with Palestine, because we don't believe that what the British government is doing is correct. The British government is supporting this genocide! It's arming Israel, it's financing Israel.
"BBC and the other media here is supporting genocide. This is illegal. This is immoral. We don't agree with it, we will never agree with it, and as Jews -- and myself as Israeli -- I am totally against it, and we will continue to be against it.
There are now more than 60 such events in the whole of Britain, uh, people don't want to support this. They are against this government on so many other issues, but especially on this one."
Another elderly white protester next to the first joins in, leaning forward to add:
"And, also, this didn't start on October the 7th. In 1948, Palestinian villages, hundreds of them --"
Another elderly protester interjects specifically, "500 of them".
The second protestor nods and continues, "were demolished, thousands of Palestinians, innocent men, women, and children were slaughtered, and seven-hundred and fifty thousand Palestinian refugees were created. That's when it started, and it hasn't stopped since!"
End ID.]

In terms of successfully getting a candidate that is not Trump into the white house, the way I see it is:
Voting for Harris is a safe choice. I don't think she is a good candidate. She is pro-fracking, wants to be tougher than Trump when it comes to the border, and according to her team, will never have an arms embargo against Israel on her platform. It feels like she is trying to lose the election. It feels like voting for a Republican. But as the democratic party nominee, she has an extremely high chance of actually winning the election.
Voting third party is a risky choice. Risk is not inherently bad nor good. You have to be prepared to take a risk. This is the risk being taken in this particular situation:
A 6-3, possibly even a 7-2, conservative majority in the Supreme Court for the next 40 years.
Supreme Court Justices Alito, Scalia, and Thomas will retire if Trump gets elected. Trump will appoint 3 young, thoroughly conservative justices to the Supreme Court who will have promised to bend to his every will, clear pathways for him, and not check his power. They will have lifetime appointments. This is not even taking into account if any other conservative justice steps down. And if something were to happen to Justices Jackson, Sotomayor, or Kagan, that would open up another seat Trump will get to fill.
Trump is using the possibility of him getting to fill Scotus seats as a huuuuuuge draw for his campaign. If conservative voters think he is a delirious old man who needs to shut his yapper but really like what the Supreme Court has done in the past 4 years*, it's not a personality contest for those voters. It's about seeing stuff get done, which it has thanks to the current Supreme Court.
In my humble opinion: All of that risk is not worth it over One Single Election.
*overturn Roe v Wade (abortion rights), strike down the Chevron Doctrine (eliminate gov agencies' power to do their job regulate corporations), Trump v USA (the president essentially can never be criminally prosecuted), and they are still very eager to make mifeprestone illegal they just need someone to present a good enough argument in court.
#so like yeah by voting blue we won't necessarily make progress But i honestly see not going backwards as progress#sometimes managing what is already bad actually is more productive than risking things getting a lot worse#I want to get to vote for a third party for president eventually but theres a lot of work to be done for it to be less risky#it sucks to be in that situation and we have to keep pushing and protesting harris. I by no means am advocating for Vote Blue & Do Nothing#we cant help others if we now have to spend the time fighting for civil liberties we used to have for the next 40 years
