CURIOSITIES: 1-MF has never hidden his admiration for Michael Caine: "He is one of the reasons I became an actor."
2-In 'Without a Clue' Michael Caine is Sherlock Holmes and Ben Kingsley is Dr. Watson. The film has the peculiarity that Dr. John Watson is the brilliant detective, while Holmes is an actor hired to impersonate the detective.

🎬| Without a Clue (1988) Directed Thom Eberhardt Written Gary Murphy Larry Strawther
3-MF was interested in Michael Caine to play his father in the series Breeders, which did not materialize due to the actor's health. The role would ultimately fall to Alun Armstrong, who performed wonderfully as Jim, Paul's father.

New Scotland Yard: The Wrong-Un (1.7, LWT, 1972)
"What happens to them if they do get away with it?"
"Nothing, really; transfer to different prisons, serve their time. The system goes on."
"And stays the same."
"Yes."
"All a bit pointless, isn't it?"
#new scotland yard#the wrongun#1972#lwt#classic tv#tony hoare#paul annett#john woodvine#john carlisle#stuart henry#billy murray#alun armstrong#john woodnutt#james mellor#christopher sandford#kenneth oxtoby#frederick hall#michael deacon#kenneth watson#forbes collins#ian patterson#a murder inside a prison sees our dynamic duo sent in to investigate‚ and once again Carlisle's shifting personal politics are on the slide#here he's positively frothing at the mouth about the evil ways of the imprisoned; it fits tbf with his pro death penalty sentiments from#back in ep2. Woodvine is the quieter voice of... what? not quite empathy but something close perhaps. that's not to say that the scenes of#interrogation are not uncomfortable and aggressive‚ but he breaks into rare good humour when meeting a crook he himself had put away. by#the close of the episode he's even sharing (very subtle) critiques of the prison system as a whole with the unusually progressive warden.#a young cast of then unknowns includes future stars Armstrong and Murray among the inmate population‚ but this isn't really a 'guest star'#type of episode‚ with plot and ensemble cast taking focus. Annett's bleak footage of trudging feet in prison uniform which opens and closes#the ep leaves little doubt on where he stood on the prison reform debate‚ but it isn't translated enough into the script i dont think#or at least‚ it could certainly have gone stronger and aimed for more impact. but perhaps not within a weekly cop show eh?

The 1992 Parliamentary Debate: Echoes of UK’s Position on Somaliland's Recognition
Throwback to 1992: #UKParliament debated #Somaliland's recognition. While acknowledging historical ties, the government cited security concerns & a divided Somali national movement as reasons for not recognizing Somaliland. Still relevant today?

I finally rewatched SPLIT SECOND aka DETECTIVE STONE last night for the first time since my dad rented it when it first came out in 1992. What a strange movie. Global warming causes floods in future (2008) London and there's massive rat infestations everywhere. Stone is haunted by the murder of his partner years ago by the killer who is a giant mutant or alien monster that absorbs its victims DNA. The monster is also part rat but looks like a mixture of a Xenomorph and Venom. There's a thing about how Stone had an affair with his partner's wife (played by Kim Cattrall) and he felt guilt about it after his partner was killed. Stone has a DNA connection to the monster, as does Cattrall and eventually his new partner. The monster doesn't seem to want to kill Stone or the people around him though it has the chances to do so. Seems like the monster is some kind of totem to represent the bad feelings that arise around an affair/love triangle and all the collateral damage caused by it.
There are some fantastic character actor performances in this by Pete Postlethwaite, Alun Armstrong, and Michael J Pollard.

There were certain sentences in Colin Hughes’s life that never failed to ruin his day. “Sorry, you’re starting this one from the bench” was one; any sentence from his mam that started with “Colin Alun Hughes” was another. Both indicated some kind of failing on his part, some kind of mistake he’d made that had disappointed those closest to him.
“That chick is totally checking you out,” was in a league of its own.
-a fic in which Colin's intentionally poor game manages to snag him a man

Source: the Bay Area Reporter, 11 September 1986 So glad to learn that Les Miz was recognized early on for its gay rage.
MISERY LOVES COMPANY Although the plot to Rossini’s opera is little more than a piece of fluff, the musicalization of Les Miserables by Alan Boublil, Claude-Michel Schonberg, and Herbert Kretzmer has so much meat to it that one sits in awe of this show’s cumulative theatrical impact. While the socially downtrodden in Victor Hugo’s novel can muster any strength at all, their misery is accompanied by extreme anger and bitterness.
The Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Les Miserables (adapted for the stage and directed by Trevor Nunn and John Caird) is, to my mind, the most powerfully concise piece of musical theater to emerge since Fiddler On the Roof. Although its score is not as lyrical as one might wish, the overall production details the course of history with stunning dramatic momentum. Andreane Neofitou’s period costumes and John Napier’s massive (yet extremely fluid) sets contribute to the show’s vast panoramic sweep.
Wonderfully touching performances came from Colm Wilkinson as the protagonist, Jean Valjean, Jackie Marks as the waif Famine, and Frances Ruffelle as Eponine. Alun Armstrong and Susan Jane Tanner were amorally entertaining as the Thenardiers (France’s answer to Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett). Michael Ball’s Marius and Rebecca Caine’s Cosette handled the romantic chores quite nicely, while Ian Tucker’s performance as the young street urchin, Gavroche, was remarkably strong for a child actor.
When one seeks superlatives to describe musical theater at its finest, let’s just say that Les Miserables is to Cats what Maria Callas is to Marie Osmond. As I left London’s Palace Theatre. I had that exhilarating feeling which comes from receiving a good swift kick in the ass to remind you just what you’ve been missing for far too long. The American premiere of Les Miserables is scheduled for December at Washington’s Kennedy Center prior to the show’s Broadway debut in February of 1987.
Given the current political climate in the United States, I would urge each and every one of B.A.R.’s readers to see this show as a means of getting in touch with his own sense of gay rage.
