Shout out to alt people who can't afford to be "visibly" alt but still partake in the culture.
Shout out to alt people who can't have the look they want because of sensory issues and/or health issues (long hair are too much/you can't grow hair, accessories are too heavy/too loud/not possible for various reasons...)
Shout out to alt people who can't wear make up for sensory and/or health reasons.
Shout out to alt people who look "cheap".
Shout out to alt people who can't partake in concerts, festivals, or any events because of sensory and/or health reasons (but for the love of god, make events accessible PLEASE).
Shout out to alt people who can't attend events because they struggle with addictions and raves, festivals, concerts are triggers.
Shout out to alt peole who are struggling with addictions. Period.
Shout out to alt people who don't fit in the body standards. BIPOC, fat, disabled, mentally ill, everyone.
Shout out to alt people who just got into in at ANY AGE and are met with gatekeeping. I love you.
Shout out to alt people who are poor and can't afford any of the stuff we see displayed on social medias.
I love you all. I wish communities were more welcoming. But you are as passionate as anyone and you deserve to find community anywhere.
Take care.

Dumb and hopefully short rant incoming, but as someone who may not be goth herself but does enjoy learning about and meeting people on the internet from different alternative subcultures involving music, fashion and beliefs against larger society atleast, I absolutely hate how gothic women are so sexualized and fetishized into this stupid archetype of "Omg Sinful Hawt Fem Dommy Mommy Gf!". When I say that, I'm not talking about like I don't know...normal girls who happen to be sexual workers and just so happen to be into a similar aesthetic or something, I mean like actual unconsenting women who just happen to want to present more outwardly as someone from the community and get randomly and inappropriately commented on by gross, pornsick/porn addicted men on the internet. There's nothing wrong with being attracted to/having a preference for that, but there's a difference between thinking a woman is beautiful because you like how they present while still treating them like the human being they are and those who just see them as a sexual object to be used for your pleasure whether the gothic girl in question wants to or not...(Again, sorry if I wasted anyone's time but I need to atleast just share my thoughts since it's been bothering me for awhile, you know?)

As a scene/emo/alt kid, I like when people use terms like "scenecore" and "emocore" and "gothcore" when they genuinely mean the aesthetic of the culture. I don't think it's posing to share fashion like that, and for a lot of people can be a safe and fun introduction into it. I know it was easier to wear silly bandz and mismatching socks than listening popular emo/scene bands in the house I grew up in.
The point is, let people enjoy our fashion and aesthetic, and avoid negative people to your own discretion. Maybe share some parts of the culture you love, you might make a friend.

Alternative Reading: SE Hinton
Looking for some classic reading about alt characters? Look no further than SE Hinton’s novels. While Greasers are not exactly punk, they ARE a part of historic American counter-culture and a piece of the early alternative scene, and one featured in some of SE Hinton’s most prominent and classic novels.
The Outsiders
Tumblr media
“‘The Outsiders‘ is a youth novel by S. E. Hinton published in 1967. Ponyboy Curtis and his gang of greasers regularly fight with another gang, the upper-class Socs. Ponyboy learns valuable lessons about family, unity, friendship, and goodness and is affiliated with a group when a Greaser kills a Soc.”
The Outsiders is SE Hinton’s most popular book and has a movie made after it.
Rumblefish
Tumblr media
“Fourteen-year-old Rusty-James reigns as the toughest kid in his rough, depressed neighborhood. He worships his older brother, who was the leader of a gang. But his brother drifts aimlessly, and Rusty-James lives only for the excitement of fighting.”
Rumble Fish also has a movie made after it.
That Was Then, This Is Now
Tumblr media
“That Was Then, This Is Now is a coming-of age, young adult novel by S. E. Hinton, first published in 1971. Set in the 1960s, it follows the relationship between two brothers, Mark Jennings and Bryon Douglas, who are foster brothers, but find their relationship rapidly changing and deteriorating.”
That Was Then, This Is Now also has a movie made after it.
SE Hinton has many other books. You can find a full list of them as well as more information about her here.

Bat Noveau and a Music Poll!
youtube
Tumblr media
"The Cry" by Bat Noveau is an example of 2000's gothrock that honors its roots. This song and the band itself honor the post-punk scene developed during the 1980's. As a younger goth person, I never grew up in that time period. However, I could not tell that this track was created as recent as 2008. I grew up in the late 2000's-early 2010's, and I would have originally guessed that this was made in the 80's.
With that being said, I was thinking of creating band recommendations; a mini-series that would highlight the "Goth Band of the Week." I want to explore more of what gothic music has to offer. Sharing my findings would help bring new life to the scene and give some underrecognized artists some well deserved credit.
