How I feel about Mal Bertha and her character PART 1
This is not a Mal bertha Biography and it is biased in the sense that I don’t like her at all. Read with caution.
Descendants 2 was actually the first movie of the trilogy that I had watched. My little sister was watching it and I happened to be passing by and sat to watch it with her when it caught my eye. 2017 me had a completely different opinion of Mal bertha than today not because I was younger but simply because D3 hadn’t come out yet and I hadn’t watched the first movie or even knew there was books. I can’t stand Mal bertha, not even the D1 version of her and that’s the one even Mal antis love. I didn’t like her in the first movie but it was more of a “I wouldn’t be friends with her.” I didn’t think that she was unforgiveable and that it was impossible to give her a second chance. She made her own bad choices but she expressed genuine regret for them and was only 16. Despite me, loathing Mal’s existence I related to her in sense that it’s scary wanting to change but you don’t know whether or not your actions have caused too much damage.
In D2 watching it as a stand alone I saw a girl wanting something other than the ‘happily ever after’ and deciding she would go for what would make her happy when she went back to isle. I was desperately hoping that after the ‘It’s going down’ scene that she would go back to the isle and not choose to stay somewhere she wanted to leave. But we know how that went and the ending left me bitter and sad not for her, but for Uma. She began to leave a bitter taste in my mouth when she broke up with Ben and came back and just expected him to get back together with her. I’m going to go around every version of her character.
PRE D1
She was a dick. That’s the simplest way I can put it. I don’t like even acknowledging pre d1 Mal because it leaves me with this very negative view of her character that I don’t think was necessary. I feel like this is a big fuck up, wanting to have Mal be her ‘evilest’ before coming to Auradon. I understand the reason why they wanted to show her growth and change throughout the series. But after looking at some real life scenarios with a similar Mal situation it made me look at it differently. Imagine this: someone who severely bullied you and harassed you and everyone around getting to go to a new place and get the best treatment there, then she’s congratulated with becoming queen of that land and not only that she then decides she’s going to be queen of the place she was bullying and harassing people at without ever properly apologizing. This happens in real life and these people get exposed which is why I don’t like it. It would be different if Mal actual grew throughout the series but it was real just her gaining more power and the scenery changing from Pre D1-D3. She also continued to make the same type of ‘mistakes’ with no actual direct consequences all she had to do was cry and they forgave her. She would be okay if it Descendants was a stand alone movie. But knowing the type of life she would get to live after all of this behavior puts me off from reading it. It would also be different if Mal lived a simple life in Auradon (Aka not trying to take control by dating the king and then stepping all over said king) She got more than what she deserved to have. In my opinion she did deserve the chance at all better life just like all the other kids who didn’t commit any crimes to be locked up. But in the eyes of people she victimized she wouldn’t deserve to be Queen become royalty, live in castles and get gifted with limos and bikes.
D1
D1 is the version of Mal everyone generally likes however, like I stated before I didn’t like her even then. At the start we see someone who is clearly trying to please her mother so if her mother wants bad behavior she gives her that. Throughout the main plot she did things of her own accord that she can’t use her mom as an excuse for. There’s a couple different things but a lot of them had to do with Ben and I’m making a whole post on how Ben was treated like shit throughout the franchise so that will be addressed then and not in this post. However for a reference she drugged him with a spelled cookie into falling in love with her for the wand. He wasn’t even willing to eat the cookie at first but she guilt tripped him into eating it. We could brush this off as her doing whatever she needed to do to get to the crown but to me she took advantage of the situation by actually going on dates with him. He was already spelled and willing to listen to whatever she wanted so besides for her own personal interest why would she go on the dates? (Granted a 16 year old wanting to get cute and have a nice date with a nice boy is not a fault or wrong in any way the fault here is all of this was happening when Ben was not in his right state of mind until the spell washed off.) Her taking advantage of Jane’s insecurities was not cool either and I’m interested in what ways she would’ve tried to use Jane if it was easier to get to the wand through her. Since her main crime in my opinion was Ben and since he’ll have his own essay post I’ll focus on Audrey here.
Her disrespect to Audrey
It was unnecessary, she had no reason to have had Audrey’s name in her mouth as much as she did D1. It would make more sense for Mal to like Audrey’s sassy boldness to me not shit talk her every chance she got. At the start they had a small passive aggressive conversation that could’ve just been left at that because technically they burred the hatchet between the two families. It was a “hey I don’t fuck with you, you don’t fuck with me” type of a situation that could’ve grown civil. However, throughout the movie in comparison to Audrey who really just had a problem with Mal’s mother until she spelled ben then it became direct problems with each other. Mal was continuously talking shit about Audrey as if Audrey was the one who fucked with her family. This time her upbringing can be referenced, on the Isle she most likely was allowed to openly hate things and Audrey was most likely raised to at least pretend to be polite. But from the Audrey we’ve seen she clearly doesn’t care about holding her tongue she’s straightforward with how she feels and she didn’t have a problem with Mal she had a problem with her mother. The only time she talked about Mal directly was about the hair spells which she ended up being right about (Mal’s addictive reliance on magic in D2 and Jane at the end of D1). After completely ignoring Audrey’s feelings and literally stole her boyfriend (not even on the the you can’t steal a loyal man type of shit she literally stole him he wasn’t even allowed to consent to it.) She later in Audrey’s Diary multiple times tries to reason this with she never meant to directly hurt Audrey and that she didn’t really want Ben she just wanted the wand etc etc. The evidence doesn’t back this up Mal, you’ve made your disdain for Audrey clear and talked shit about her to Evie right after you spelled Ben the did I mention bs claiming “Chad will see her horrible personally” as if you knew her personally and that Chad didn’t grow up with her. Mal can say she didn’t mean to hurt Audrey but she clearly didn’t mind that she did.
I’m going to make a whole separate on Audrey and how I do think she gets a lot of slack because people can relate to her, but also how her treatment in comparison to Mal’s is unfair.
I did think she deserved a chance to show remorse for her behavior (spoiler: she didnt) Again, I like to look at things from the pov of other characters for things like this. If I was an Auradon kid who was friends with Mal and ended up finding out she was using me and plotting to take over and destroy the place I lived with/for her mother but changed her mind last minute. I would see her as forgivable I just wouldn’t want her around me. In other words I would expect her to start her own new life, not continue trying to live the one where she was plotting without even actually apologizing to people. AU: After descendants instead of continuing to date Ben she breaks it off and goes to an Art school frequently coming back to visit Auradon and after high school she goes on a quest (with the C4 of course) exploring all kinds of different kingdoms and countries because she was locked up on the isle her whole life. In the future she possibly returns to Auardon and even could get back together with Ben with a proper start.
D2
The first Descendants Movie I ever saw so it holds a special place with me and I actually rooted for Mal the first time I watched it. I sat in to watch at the argument scene and knowing all of the plots now and after rewatching it my opinion has change greatly. We see a blonde and very stressed Mal who’s dealing with the pressures of becoming a royal in order to secure her place with Ben. I do feel bad for Mal when she was talking to Evie, she was trying to reach out to her friend about her situation and was basically told to stop talking about it. I understand Evie’s feelings of wanting to leave the past behind but I can also understand Mal feeling like she’s cornered and can’t even talk to her best friend. I can also understand her feelings of ending up overwhelmed with her decisions from going to somebody who did whatever whenever to becoming a royal with duties I get the pressure. If Mal decided that wasn’t the life she wanted to live and went back to the isle where she felt more comfortable I don’t see anything wrong with that. She wasn’t required to stay in Auradon if she felt like she was unhappy there. That says a little something about Auradon to me if somebody would rather live where they ate rotten food than live there. My sympathy for Mal stops there because everything else was a result of her own actions and things she brought onto herself.
1. The royal situation
Let’s get one thing clear nobody was forcing Mal to hand sign up for the prime and proper royal life. She did that herself.
Nobody told her that she had to dye her hair blonde and have a complete wardrobe change, she did.
Nobody said she even had to continue the terrible relationship she had with Ben and go straight into being a royal in order to basically become Ben’s wifey, she did.
She’s saying all of these people are expecting things of her when 6 months ago she was stealing candy from babies when she was the one who let people have these expectations. She decided to take up the role herself because that was what she wanted. Let’s be honest with how it happened Mal would not live in Auradon if she had to be a regular citizen she wanted to be in control of everybody and to have power because that how she always lived. However once she realized that nobody was just about to hand her this power just for being with Ben unlike with her Mom (getting to rule the isle just because she was her daughter and not because she actually worked her way up there) and that she actually had duties and work to fulfill if she wanted to be the boss. She let her pride get in the way by feeling she had to prove she could last with Ben and become an Auradon girl and ended up miserable and blaming Ben for something she decided to do herself.
She then had the responsibility to fulfill all of those duties and she was struggling unlike anybody else who would’ve had to abide by the “don’t use magic” quote on quote rule she decided to use Magic after claiming she’d give it up and was still a hot ass mess. She can’t even use the excuse that was to help her with her lady in training because she was using it to not be late to class and later to try and manipulate Ben. @ishiphumasohard made a good response on why it was unfair for Mal to use magic as her ‘right’ because at what point would it be unfair to other kids? While all the other kids have to show up on time to school Mal gets to use magic to turn back time instead of just being on time. If other kids studied all night for a test Mal can use a speed reading spell. If there was a cooking contest Mal can spell her way into a feast while the others would have to the actual labor. You get the point, because magic is not universally used by everyone in Auradon and it’s an unspoken rule that it’s not to be used then she should have followed this rule.
I will say the girl was stressed and was feeling alone, I already gave my sympathies for that.
The magic situation really hit the fan when she felt comfortable enough to spell the boyfriend who had already put enough trust in her to continue their relationship that started with her drugging him for her own benefit. Compared to her Ben did seem to be taking it easy but maybe like her, he didn’t want to show it. It seems Ben and Mal had a sort of pack to work hard together to become ‘the king and queen’ of Auradon they were supposed to be in it together. In my opinion it would make more sense for Ben to be hiding things from Mal than the other way around due to the nature of their shitty relationship. But that’s just not how it went down and after Mal tries to spell Ben into not finding her spellbook he gets RIGHTFULLY ANGRY. That entire scene was her fault, she could’ve explained herself and why she was using magic and that she was having a hard time but she once again decides to take advantage of Ben’s trust. Then proceeds to make sure she ends the fight with her being the victim. So much so that the entire fact that she spelled Ben was never brought up again.
Going back to the isle
She then decides to go back to the isle, if this was really her decision I wouldn’t mind it. There’s nothing wrong with her liking the isle better than Auradon if that’s where she felt at home. The problem was she was clearly emotional and let’s be honest, if she had called all of her friends together and actually broke up with Ben and told them this was her decision to go back to the isle before leaving they MIGHT (hard might) not have ran after her like they did. Not only that the duties that we were speaking of earlier, she didn’t formally pull out of anything which is why it irked me when she was so irritated that they came back for her.
Some people actually didn’t like her attitude as soon as she got back on the isle because she expected to run it. That wasn’t surprising to me honestly, because for her whole life that’s how it was, only person she was scared of was her mother. She quickly realized however now that her mom isn’t around and in lizard form nobody was scared of her. Most unrealistic part of D2 was how Mal didn’t get jumped as soon as people realized she got back. Like I said Isle Mal was a straight dickhead and had too many enemies to be walking around like she was.
Another point was when she got her hair dyed by dizzy, the shop wasn’t open, she saw this, ignored it and went in anyway. Not even because her and Dizzy were tight like that she just expected her to do what she wanted (get the pattern with Mal here?)
Skipping her scene with harry because it did nothing to the plot.
The rest of the C4 and Ben come to get Mal back as expected and she acts all surprised and angry. Ben apologizes to her and instead of apologizing for what she did and then explaining that she doesn’t want to go back to Auradon and be a lady of the court. She continues the narrative that Ben wanted her to change and that she’s not good for Auradon so she’s going to stay on the isle. What’s the difference between the two? The first one is her taking responsibility of her actions and deciding for herself that that’s not the life she wants. While the other is acknowledging none of the blame and deciding to run away not because that’s not what she really wants but because everyone will turn on her so she has to run first. It painted a narrative that nothing of this was her own doing while at the same time making it seem like she is doing the right thing by backing away which in hindsight probably was the better decision. Mal’s feelings weren’t the problem I understand them, she thinks she won’t be accepted as herself so she wants to leave before they can kick her out but that’s not what caused her to leave and she knows it. You got caught doing something shitty and instead of apologizing you ran away.
After Ben gets kidnapped she lectures the C4, again she does have some blame in this. With the way the fight ended it made it look like Ben was in the wrong so he was going to try and apologize regardless if they brought him or not. The rest of them came to keep him safe and as her gang members come back for her. Was this not something she considered after she calmed herself down? Ben honestly had no reason to be directly on the isle unprotected besides to sneak and apologize to you so are you really going to just blame the C4 for bringing him there and getting him captured?
Then when Uma, who has him captured plans a meeting she antagonizes her like that’s what is best for Ben at the time. Even in the mist of Ben being in danger she thought it was a good idea to try and piss off the person holding him captive. If you don’t remember what she did she called her shrimpy, insulted the smell of the restaurant and said she never thought of Uma while implying that Uma always had her on her mind for no reason. None of that was necessary to ask what Uma’s conditions were to give Ben back she just couldn’t help herself.
She didn’t care about Dizzy
Who had just performed a task for her and right after she paid her got robbed and had the place trashed just for Mal to say she’ll be alright. This should’ve been foreshadowing at the very least that she wasn’t ready to be making decisions for other people’s lives because besides her own and her friends she didn’t care for many especially those on the isle.
It’s going down
Even though it was in the song and not directly her words again antagonizing the person who has Ben held captive and threatening his life, insulting them is stupid. This entire scene is messy and they shouldn’t even had been able to win a fight against pirates outnumbered. When has Mal ever picked up a sword???
Car ride Back
She gets mad when Ben has sympathy/ shows understanding for Uma. She somehow realizes that it’s wrong Uma kidnapped him but was comfortable spelling him without a second thought. In my opinion she thought she had some type of ownership over Ben she could do what she wanted to him and if somebody else did it was wrong. (Even though this can be applied to what she did in D1, I’m only talking about D2 because most people agree she showed regret for her actions in D1) When he calls her out on her hypocrisy she goes mute and does that thing, of letting her mouth hang opened whenever she gets called out on her shit.
END OF PART 1
I was going to make this one long post but I’ve been putting this off long enough so here is part 1, no idea when part 2 will be up. I do hope to have the Ben posts up before that.

Little Flame (Hades x reader)
Request: Can I have an imagine where I'm Mal's best friend and I have a crush on Hades and he overhears?
A/N: Made with love, based on @thorxme18 ‘s request (I modified the concept a bit) 🥰 Sorry not sorry but… no smut in this one. Also, this ended up being super long, I think it's like 7k-ish ???? Anyways….. Enjoyyyy and tell me what you think.
Pairing: Hades x reader
Warning: Cursing
Disclaimer: I DO NOT own Descendants or any of its characters.
Y/I: your initial
Much to your surprise, everything had changed from the last time some VKs were elected to go off-shore. Everyone who wasn't chosen seemed to be happy for those who were; you wished you'd've had that reaction from your mentor and, you'd dare to say friend, Hades. You couldn't bring yourself to stop thinking about it, it made both your mind and your left foot bounce non-stop as you waited for Mal and Ben to make an entrance at the new students' welcoming ceremony.
Ben thanked his people for their support, but not everyone seemed to be sharing the positive attitude on the VK topic. Beside you, you heard Audrey's grandma, whose name you couldn't remember, scoff, "not like we had a choice."
All you did was roll your eyes, after all your time in Auradon, you had grown used to the comments about you being a villain. You listened to Ben while fidgeting with the sleeve of your dress, a grin plastered across your face in expectancy of what was gonna happen after he finished singing. However, just like it happened with the announcement of new arrivals, not everyone was happy about the king's proposal.
"No!" Audrey screamed, making a few threatening glares, including yours, be thrown her way. As cliché as it may sound, it is right to say that, if looks could kill, Audrey would've been dead within seconds (if her jealousy didn't kill her first).
After Mal said yes, everyone began celebrating and commenting on how romantic the gesture had been, how good of a couple they made, and how lucky Auradon's people were to have them.
"Ben and Mal are the absolute best, I really cannot wait for Mal to be queen," said the girl who was standing next to you.
With a smile, you nodded in agreement, "I know, I mean, they work really well together, and they're such a great couple."
"You'd really rather have a VK on the throne than me?"
The girl just turned around and left, but you faked a smile and mocked, "I think even Carlos' dog would make a better queen."
"You're not one to talk, you're one of them yourself," Chad Charming came to Audrey's defense.
"Why thanks, captain obvious, I was completely unaware of that." You rolled your eyes at them as you began making your way to where your friends were standing.
As soon as Mal came down from the stage, you and Evie engulfed her in a tight hug.
"Did you guys know?"
Evie just sighed and grinned, "everything."
You shrugged nonchalantly, "helped plan it." You hugged her once more, thrilled to see her so happy, "you're gonna be the best queen that this pretty, preppy people can even imagine."
….
You stood next to Evie's desk, scanning a new book of sketches she had made for Mal's wedding dress and munching on a chocolate chip cookie.
"Who else knows about the crown and the scepter?" asked Evie, with her brows slightly frowned.
"No one. I mean, think about it, people are scared enough as it is. We have to employ these entirely new security measures". Mal spoke with confidence as she explained the situation to both of you.
For one, you couldn't believe that such important objects had been stolen, and you understood the fear of the people, knowing from first-hand experience how dangerous and wicked villains could be. However, you didn't support the Isle's complete isolation, it was unfair to take such measures.
"Will this delay our bringing over more V.K.'s?" Evie asked.
Mal sighed and replied, "We're talking about closing the barrier for good."
You gasped. "What? M, they can't do that."
Automatically, Evie's notebook rested on the table next to you and began pacing.
"Not only will you kill dozens of children's illusions to be here, but we'd never get to see the others again. You said no, right?"
"Y/N is right, you know? Besides, the four of us are living the dream, and we finally get to share that. I mean, what could be more important than that?" Evie had always been the most compassionate out of the five of you, so she was trying to lead Mal into the path that seemed the kindest.
"Yeah. I know. I mean, maybe security or maybe peace of mind for everyone in Auradon. People like Hades, dangerous and cruel, could get out of the Isle at any moment, I truly believe that it's best for us to keep the barrier closed. For the sake of our people".
"Our people? M, look, don't get me wrong; I really admire how you care about everyone's safety here at Auradon," you sat on a spare chair, between your two best friends, eyes pleadingly looking at Mal. "But you can't afford to forget where we all come from. Better than anyone, we know that not everyone there is a criminal; and, even some of those who are, want a chance to prove themselves. There must be something, anything that can be done."
Mal seemed a bit taken aback, both of you could see that she was having a hard time with the current situation so, even if you didn't completely agree with the measures that she was telling you about, you gave her your most sincere smile and all the support that you could muster.
"M, I'm so glad that you're going to be Queen. You will be a part of these conversations, you will stand up for the V.K.s. Thank you for telling us. You're gonna be a great Queen".
Mal seemed gave you a small closed-lip smile, you and Evie stood up and hugged her, and she sighed, calming down a bit.
…
You hummed to yourself as you helped Carlos prepare a picnic basket for Jane's birthday party. Chuckling, while Evie threw different fruits at Jay, you folded everyone's towels and neatly arranged them. When you were about to go upstairs, to get your camera, you heard a faint, "later, suckers!" coming from outside.
You all rushed out and, before you could see anything, Jay exclaimed, "Whoa! You might wanna think of a spell for that."
Turns out, Audrey, who apparently was out and about looking for trouble, not only stole the scepter and the crown, but had also turned Mal into an old lady. Your friends were debating over what to do concerning the Audrey issue, when you chimed in, "The only thing more powerful than the scepter is Hades' ember. We need to go get it."
Carlos countered, "Are you sure? I mean, Y/N, can't you fix it with your magic?"
"Sorry guys, but Hades's our only choice, we need to get the ember."
Jay scoffed, "Yeah, right. We can also invite him over for tea."
Carlos gave him a smack on the back of his head, but didn't support your suggestion either.
"He’s right, Y/I,” Evie spoke up, “ besides, no one knows where his lair is”.
You shared a look with Celia, then shrugged, “I do. Actually, we both do.”
“I'm his errand rat. I've got the key at my dad's.”
“Great, you’re both coming,” announced Mal.
To be honest, you missed the dusty air of the Isle; you'd never been a fan of the Olympus, so when the gods decided to kick you, the goddess of devilry in war, daughter of Ares, out of the place, you didn't even bother argue. You greeted Dr. Facilier, waltzed around his shop for a bit, and then exited with your friends.
"Long time nay see," beamed Harry with a wicked grin. The bikes that had brought you were now occupied by pirates of The Lost Revenge's Crew.
Jay was fuming and it showed, he snarled, "get off my bike, Hook.''
"Catch me if you can, Jay!"
And then, they were gone.
You made a move to follow them, as Jay, Carlos, and Evie already had, but Mal placed a hand on your shoulder. "They got this, the three of us gotta gotta go find the ember." So you made your way to Hades'.
With a sigh, you opened the door to one of the most familiar places in the whole Isle.
"Okay, stay quiet," Celia warned. " It echoes, like, crazy in here."
The three of you walked and you could see Mal's eyes bouncing all around the entrance of the 'New Underworld,' as you liked to call it jokingly. When Mal passed besides Severo' s cage, his three mouths snarled menacingly and he began barking; however, it stopped when you passed by and was replaced by happy panting. You looked at him but decided against greeting the three-headed dog, you'd have time for that later. Your best friend sent you a questioning look and you smiled at her, as if telling her "I'll explain later."
The only way of entering the lair was similar to the entrance of the mines in which dwarfs worked back at Charmington. Multiple rail bikes were stationed on the edge, together with some lantern helmets. Each of you took a helmet and got into a bike, which immediately began taking you to where your mentor and friend lived.
You glanced back at Celia and Mal as you explained, "okay, the plan's simple: you'll approach him and get the ember while Celia and I distract him".
"Okay," "alright then," they both agreed.
Given that the former god was fast asleep, you and Celia stayed at the entrance of the cave, while Mal followed your directions and approached him, to take the ember. You mentally cursed as Hades, still unmoving, inquired, "What are you two doing here?"
"We just thought we'd, uh, say hi," Celia tried. When Hades didn't respond, she continued, "also, we noticed that you're low on… on… canned corn."
Not knowing how to support her weak ass excuse, you limited yourself to greet him with a small wave, to which he responded with a smirk and a nod.
"Hi, Dad". Mal remained behind his couch, bending her knees to face him.
"Quite a show you put on the other day," he claimed.
"Right back at you".
After steering awake, he stood up, more like jumped to his feet, "I was just coming to see you!"
Mal didn't believe him, and didn't bother to pretend. "Really? Wonder why.Is it because I'm gonna be Queen?"
"Ah! Now, Mal, don't be bitter".
"You abandoned me when I was a baby," the fae's voice was full of anger and disgust.
The god rolled his eyes and defended himself, "no. no, I left your mother. She's not the easiest person to get along with".
"You think?"
You scoffed, making your way toward the small storage room where all your witchcraft and sorcery materials were sitting, unused ever since you moved to Auradon. While you gathered your possessions, you didn't pay much attention to their interaction, they deserved privacy.
From where you were, you could hear them sing and fight like they hadn't done in the last sixteen years or so.
"Do you wanna make up for being a lousy dad? - Give me the ember," you heard Mal demand.
Hades smirked, "the ember only works for me." And me, you recalled.
"No. It'll work for me. We're blood."
"You're only half Hades. The ember won't do everything for you that it does for me".
"I'll take my chances." Mal began to walk toward where you were, so you took it as a cue to grab your bag and make your exit.
"If it gets wet, it's game over."
When you left, Hades glanced at the cupboard where you kept some things, noticing that, now, the only thing left was a small piece of burnt paper with the words LONG LIVE THE UNDERWORLD messily scribbled on it. His thunderous laugh was faintly heard back on the surface. 'The place does have on hell of an echo'.
Your eyes seemed to be stuck on Mal as you walked back to the barrier; when she noticed you gave her a smile, but felt a kick in your stomach for not telling her which was your connection to him. You could have told her at the lair, but remained silent, thinking it was better to do so when the tension was less.
Everything was quicker than expected, you got in, got the ember after sort of an awkward greeting, and got out. The only problem that you had was the fact that Gil and Harry had now escaped, unleashing a chain of events that had resulted in the oddest of alliances. Long story short, Uma had been roaming the sea all this time, apparently looking for a hole in the barrier; and, while doing that, she had found all the luxury of life outside the dome of the Isle. So, now Mal had promised to guarantee a future for all VKs and you were working with the sea three.
After arriving at Auradon prep, Mal had lead you to the Castle. You looked for Ben with no success, ending up in a room full of knight armours which, speaking of odd, were now charmed to fight. Thanks Audrey. From there, things had gone messy and both gangs were now singing, dancing and fighting for their lives. You did what you could to cover Mal, who was battling two minion armours at once. You swinged your sword and struck the ones around you, with your eyes focused on the scene surrounding you; they were outnumbering you and your group was cornered into the center of the room. However, you couldn't help but notice that the sea witch had dropped the ember, which Audrey had noticed too.
When one of the knights went for the ember, you slashed his head off and went for it too, beating him to it. You concentrated, closing your eyes and clenching your fist around the ember. The familiar burst of blue sparks began to run through you and your eyes opened, glowing silver as you screamed and lifted your arm, making the knights stand completely still before dropping their swords and falling to pieces.
"Y/N?" Mal winded, her wide eyes calling on to an explanation.
You scratched your neck, trying to force your words out, "it's a long story, M."
She pressed on the topic, "Hades said his ember only worked for him, How..."
The others remained quiet, using the time to catch their breaths and recover from the recent encounter; however, Evie's and Carlos' faces mirrored Mal's.
Hesitantly, you revealed the truth. "You guys know I'm sort of a greek goddess myself?," they nodded.
"I am, or I used to be, the goddess of devilry in war, known for being reckless and destructive. This sparked Hades' interest, so he became my mentor and one of my closest friends. When my dad, Ares, found out, he asked Zeus for my permanent expulsion from the Olympus, so I moved in with Hades. Before everything with Hercules and Megara happened, I was already learning everything about the Underworld. Hades' grew to trust me enough to teach me the magic of death so, as it all happened, I learned to use the ember".
The others looked satisfied with your story, but Mal looked at you with an air of betrayal, "so, you've known him all this time," she concluded.
Again, you sighed, "that's right.'’
This time, it was Carlos who spoke, "why didn't you tell us?"
"I don't know, guess, the way I saw it, you guys would've treated me differently knowing that I'm immortal". Okay, that was only half of the truth, but you couldn't risk it in the middle of such an important mission.
Evie smiled at you and, while hugging you, she assured, "Y/N, We love you, no matter what."
Carlos, Jay, and even Mal were quick to join her, showering you with smiles and words of agreement.
"Uh, guys, sorry to interrupt but we gotta keep going," Gil said, making you end the hug and continue your search for the king.
….
On your way to Audrey's room, Mal approached you.
"So… you and my dad being friends, didn't see that one coming," she chuckled.
You shrugged, kicking the dust beneath you, "he was there for me in hard times, the guy has a better heart than what people give him credit for."
She nodded at your words, "How'd you guys meet?"
"We made quick friends in the Troyan war. I was summoned by the greek soldiers and he was there, personally gathering the souls of the fallen. He said my work was great and I complimented his fiery hair, which, as I came to learn, turns out is one of his softy points."
"The Troyan war? So that's why you didn't even open your greek history book," she concluded, lightening the mood.
Audrey was not in her dorm, but Uma found her diary, so you arrived to the conclusion that she was at Fairy Cottage, a place where she had spent a big part of her childhood. Nevertheless, you had all agreed to meet at Evie's after the two hours had passed, so you headed there instead.
When you made it, you saw the three new Vk's fast asleep on the living room, and Evie's boyfriend, Doug, in the same condition but in her study.
Evie fell to the floor beside him, desperately trying to wake him, but to no avail.
Uma rolled her eyes, "he's spelled, is she not a fast learner?"
"She's emotionally involved, okay?" Mal defended her.
"Well, in that case, she should be able to wake him up. True love's kiss".
The atmosphere in the room got thicker with Uma's suggestion, so Evie asked to be left alone with her sleeping boyfriend. After a song and a true love kiss, not to mention with Doug back on his feet, you decided to take a break and have a snack.
You smiled when Mal apologized to Uma, and placed a hand on hers to show your pride and support. However, happiness and peace of mind didn't last long. With loud thuds, wooden boards began to cover the windows and trapped you inside the house. Mal's eyes glowed green as she tried to break Audrey's jinx, but her magic wasn't powerful enough so she and Uma had to join forces. The boards fell down.
Evie hummed, "You did it! Together! This is what I've been talking about".
"I guess my shell likes you," Uma shrugged, wanting to appear nonchalant. "Why don't you hold on to that?"She handed the ember to Mal, but instead of keeping it, she smiled and handed it to you.
"Actually, I think Y/N should have it. She knows it better than I do," she confided.
You thanked your best friend and put the ember away, proceeding to look out the window.
You caught a breath but, before you said anything, Celia announced, "hey, it's your bae!"
That's all it took for all of you to rush outside, stopping on your tracks when you saw the guys on Evie's front yard. With a smile plastered on your face, you hugged Jay and Carlos, and smiled at the pirates and Ben (who was Busy greeting his queen-to-be).
"I'm so glad you guys are okay," you raved. "All of you," once again, your eyes fell on Gil and Harry.
After reuniting, you had to part ways once more; Jane, Gil, and Doug went to find Fairy godmother, and the rest went looking for Audrey to Fairy Cottage.
….
Frankly, it was quite predictable that Audrey would, yet again, outsmart you; so, when she wasnt in her hideout anymore, you weren't as surprised. To say that going there had been a loss of time would be inaccurate, given that you had witnessed a sort of amusing scene when Ben freed Chad.
You were walking together, abandoning Fairy cottage, when Ben demanded that, someday, he had to hear how Mal and Uma ended up working for a common cause. You shared a look with Evie, and she happily declared, "Actually, Mal promised to let all the kids off the Isle - once this is over".
"Mal?" The king inquired.
The fae sighed defeated, which you didn't understand.
"I have to tell you guys something. Um… I lied to you," she confessed. "No one will be coming off the Isle".
You couldn't help but get angry at her, how could she give you so much hope only to crash it? You knew that if you opened your mouth, you wouldn't be able to control your words so, with your eyes locked in the ground, you stood motionless.
She continued, "the program is shut down. And the barrier… will be closed for good. For Auradon's safety."
Uma spoke up, looking at Mal with a deadly glare. "Hold up. So we're saving your precious people and your behinds for a lie. I knew it was a mistake to trust you. You're always out for yourself".
Harry followed his captain's example, facing Ben.
"And you, King Benny..." he bowed, approaching your friend, "you're probably just gonna throw us all back inside".
It was not the badass pirates who raised their voices in that moment, it was the broken children who had discovered that they had been, in fact, fighting for a heartless lie this whole time.
"You know what? I actually thought you were brave. You're nothing but a chicken." Celia's voice broke when she spoke, sounding so betrayed that it wrecked you. "Too scared to tell me I was never gonna see my dad again".
You went after Celia, throwing the ember at mal with your back facing her. Unnoticed by you, the magical gem had landed on a tiny puddle on the forest floor; but that had been enough to extinguish its light.
"No! No," Mal exclaimed, tears beginning to flood her eyes.
"Regain your might and ignite! Regain your might and ignite!" Despite her desperate tries, the ember did not light back on.
The two pirates left to find their friend, showing no empathy at all and not bothering to look back.
At least now, Mal had the guts to face her friends and apologize. She directed her words at Evie and the others, but wished that you were there too, even if she didn't deserve it at that moment.
"Evie… I'm so sorry. I'm sorry, I just… I thought that... I was afraid to tell you. I thought I was gonna lose my best friend.I… I just lost Y/N! But I had to do something. I had to protect Auradon".
Evie brought herself to ask, "closing the barrier was your idea?"
Mal sobbed, defending herself, "I did it for us. I did it for our life that we have here now."
"For our life? What about the kids that we left behind on that island? The kids that we promised? We were their only hope. I thought you were gonna stand up for the V.K.'s. But instead, you lied to them. And you lied to Jay. And you lied to Carlos. And you lied to Y/N. And you lied to me. We're your family."
"I'm gonna go look for Y/N," whispered Jay, only for Carlos to hear.
When the younger boy nodded, the thief began to run in the direction in which you had previously left. After a few yards, he found you, throwing rocks into a small pond. He kneeled to sit next to you, but with a cloud of pink fog, he turned to rock. That's what let you know that Audrey was near, probably going after Mal, so you jumped to your feet and ran back to your friends. There they were, all of them turned to rock; but Mal was nowhere to be found.
Okay, think, think, she has to be somewhere near. Where would M go? She'd go find Audrey; now, where would Audrey go… The castle!
So, that's where you went and when you arrived, you saw your friend begging the pirate sea witch for her help. You were about to make your presence known, but you were snatched off your feet and hit with something on the back of your head.
You woke up on one of the towers next to Celia, who practically threw herself into your embrace.
"It's gonna be fine," you tried to reassure her.
"No, it's not," scoffed Audrey, grabbing Celia by her forearm and forcing her to stand up. "Now, scream for help," she ordered, "I need Mal up here so I can end her once and for all."
Celia complied. "Help me, Mal!" she screamed.
"Don't listen to her, Mal! Go find the others," you tried to warn her but Audrey put the scepter against Celia's neck; "say another word, and she's done with," she threatened.
"Save your little friend, Mal!"
"Help me, Mal!"
You cheered when you saw Mal approaching in her dragon form, but a glare from Audrey was enough to shut you up.
"Careful not to fry your little V.K. buddy!"
Audrey was distracted by Mal so you took the chance and jumped from the tower, landing on your feet. You ran to Uma and Harry, who were still there, watching the whole thing.
You dusted off your jacket and approached them, "are you guys okay?"
"Yeah, but she doesn't stand a chance without the ember," claimed Uma.
''We're stronger together. We're stronger together!" She tried to use her shell, but it was not working. "I'm right here, Mal! Regain your might and ignite. I'm right here, girl," the ember flickered lit but it didn't last long.
"Let me help, you placed your hand over Uma's, grabbing the shell with her. "We're right here. Regain your might and ignite!"
Your eyes gleamed silver and you beamed, "It worked!"
In that moment, Harry took you by surprise when he hugged you and Uma at the same time, not caring about 'sides'. You hugged the pirates back and grinned.
"Thanks Uma," you smiled, "and I'm sorry for everything".
Even if Mal had already apologized to Uma, you felt the need to do the same because, even if you did everything under your friend's lead, you had still been terrible with her.
"S'alright," she returned the smile, "and I'm glad we did this together."
…
For what seemed to be the thousandth time you closed your eyes and concentrated on the ember, but the result was not different from the previous attempts. You fell back into Ben's arms, panting.
"Sorry, guys, but I'm not powerful enough. The ember's laced to Hades' magic, not mine."
"There must be something that we can do, she's slipping away," Evie insisted.
"As Y/N said, there's only one person in the world who might be able to do something about this, and that's Hades," said Mal.
"Hades? He wouldn't do it. I wouldn't risk it,"Ben tried to reason.
"Actually, he might do it for me. He's my father," Mal revealed.
"I'll send guards to get him,"offered Ben.
"I can go get him," you volunteered, "I know where his lair is."
Ben looked at you questioningly; "he's, uh, an old friend of mine," you wrinkled your nose.
Uma entered the ro
\om, followed by Harry. "Maybe I can hitch a ride. The Isle is my home, someone needs to be there to protect it."
"Well, then, you will need your first mate". You smiled at them, already fond of the pirates.
"The Isle will be in very good hands."
The room fell silent, but Celia broke the ice, "Can I go, too?I wish I could be in both places," she gave Mal a sad smile.
So, it was settled. You were leaving the following day.
….
"I'll be back soon, stay here," you told the guards.
"Good luck, Y/N," Uma placed her hand on your shoulder and you smiled at her.
"Thanks, guys, for everything."
"Nay," shrugged Harry, "no big deal but, seriously, if ya ever visit, come to the ship."
With that, you parted ways. You knew how to get to Hades' by heart, from every part of the Isle; so it took you no time to reach the entrance of his lair.
You let out a breath and went in.
"Look who showed up after the curtain closed, heard you helped Mal beating the witch wannabe," he didn't even have to look your way to know who had traspassed his property; it was enough with the sound of your step.
"I… How did you even hear that?" You tried to avoid the elephant in the room.
Ignoring your question, he continued as he added what you noticed were the final ingredients to one of the potions that he sold at the market. "Congrats, really. Guess I taught you well. Now, let me guess, you came to say a final goodbye now that you're welcomed to join the goodie-two-shoes once again; it was fun having you, Y/N/N."
Now, you straight up scoffed at him, "dude, chill, don't get all cheesy and sad on me. I'm here because I need a favor; actually, Mal needs a favor."
He looked at you and you could see that he was angry, broken, and yet willing to help you out once again, "okay then, little flame, I'm listening.
You looked around the room, then looked at him, "It's Audrey, she's under the sleeping curse."
He crossed his arms over his chest and raised a brow, "so what, didn't you use the ember to wake her?"
"Couldn't do it," you admitted. "Guess I'm not as connected to it anymore."
He scoffed, glaring at you, "Who would've thought, it's been what, four years? Not that I'm keeping record."
Even if his tone was sharp and his eyes seemed hateful, you could read him like an open book; and, to say that it broke you to see him so hurt because of you was quite too little to express what you felt. "Hades, I… I'm sorry."
At this point, your eyes were boring into his pleadingly, but his pride didn't let him forgive you so easily.
"You're sorry?" he exclaimed. "Jeez, little flame, that's a relief! I'm glad a lowlife villain like myself is at least worthy of your apologies!"
For a moment, your sadness and regret were clouded by anger. You were forcing yourself to be brave enough to make amends and here he was, being a complete dick without even listening to you.
Stepping closer to him, with only a few inches between the two of you, you barked, "look, I'm actually trying here. So if you could shove your ego up your ass for a second and listen, that'd be fucking great!"
He smirked, closing the gap even more, "at least you haven't completely lost it yet."
When the steam of the moment dissolved into the air, you stepped back and sat down, using your hand for inviting him to do the same. "Now, the truth is, I did try to call; I tried to reach you the last time I was here, but I… I don't know. I was afraid of losing Mal to you. I was afraid of losing the world outside to you."
He remained silent so you continued, "When I was chosen to go to Auradon, I thought I had lost everything. Then I just met all of this great people and discovered that I'd… I..." you huffed. "Who am I trying to trick. The truth is I was awfully ungrateful with you, and a terrible friend and I'm really sorry."
He quirked a brow.
"Yes, I'm sorry, and as much as you'd like to hear more, that's all that I have to say."
"What were you saying about not getting all sad and cheesy? Oh, right, 'dude chill!' " He mocked you with a high pitched voice, making you smile.
"When do we leave?"
"As soon as possible."
….
When you got to Auradon, the guards told you that the king had sent specific instructions for Hades' stay. You were forced to head back to your place, and he was kept in a small version of the magic dome for the night. Next morning, when you were already back at Audrey's dorm, he was taken there by at least eight guards.
The former god entered the room, his limbs adorned with silver cuffs, and his face sporting a snarl of disgust to which you had become familiar with a long time ago.
Mal walked up to him, closely followed by you.
"Thank you," she said, "for coming."
"Didn't do it just for you," his eyes caught yours.
Ben and Mal shared a confused look, but the king broke it and asked, "can you wake her?'’
"Since when do heroes care about villains?" asked Hades, turning the cards around.
Ben trailed off, "she's..."
The god completed the young king's sentence, "one of your own. Right, When you guys try to destroy the world… it's an error in judgment. But when it's one of us… lock them up and throw away the key."
He scoffed, "right, Beast?"
After having a stare down with the former king, who had imprisoned the god and stripped him off his magic all those years ago, he raised his hands, but the guards restrained him immediately, going full defense.
"Yeah. I'm gonna need to use my hands," he declared.
He extended his hand, silently asking for the ember. Mal handed it to him and this time he was not restrained.
When he grabbed the gem that was rightfully his, his hair lit up.
He smirked, "haven't lost my touch."
The former lord of the dead stepped closer to the bed, he began the countercourse and the room was showered on a blue light, beaming with his power.
Audrey woke up, wishing for it all to be a nightmare. "I'm sorry. I wanted to hurt you both. I wanted to hurt all of you," she sighed.
Mal and Ben approached her bed. "I have owed you an apology for… a very long time now," said Mal, Ben agreed, "and so have I."
Then, Audrey's grandma, whose name you still couldn't recall, apologized to Mal. Just then, Beast motioned the guards to seize Hades, and to take him away once again. How classy, apparently a villain didn't even deserve a thank you.
After the guards exited the room, you followed them into the hallway.
"Wait! Guess I'll see you later," you smiled. "Say hi to Pain and Panic for me."
"They'll be thrilled to hear from you," he tried to smirk back, his expression just as sad as yours. "Thanks for a glimpse of the sun, by the way."
Without thinking twice, you walked up to him and pressed your lips to his, framing his left cheek with your right hand. The kiss wasn't as hungry as you would've expected it to be, but it was eager and full of feelings. It was the perfect way to say I'm gonna miss you.
No word was uttered afterwards. Your foreheads remained against each other for a few seconds, and his blue eyes looked at yours in a way in which they hadn't before, yet he didn't smile. You both stepped back, turned around, he slipped the ember into your hand, and then you left your separate ways. You smiled to yourself and held the familiar gem, feeling its power and warmth curse through you.
Days passed and you couldn't stop thinking about that kiss; you hadn't told anyone and it was eating you alive. So, now that you were at Evie's, wrapped around a blanked by the fire, watching a movie with your two best friends, you were gonna do it. You grabbed the remote and pressed pause, taking a breath and looking at them.
"Guys I need to tell you something. I'm sorry if it upsets you but it's been drowning me for some time now. I, I kissed Hades the day he came here to wake Audrey up."
Evie smiled at you but Mal was frozen in shock, her mouth was agape and her eyes were wide open. She tried to say something but words didn't come out.
You continued, fidgeting with your blanket, "M, I know that things have been quite tense between you but I couldn't lose him; I couldn't let him go back to the Isle without knowing how I felt and, believe me, I've tried to tell you guys before but I was also figuring this whole thing out."
Evie grabbed Mal's hand supportingly, then the fae took a breath and smiled at you. "Thanks for telling me this, Y/I.''
"You guys, you're my best friends. There's no one else I'd trust with this," you smiled at them, glad that they'd had taken it so well.
Mal sighed, "still, I can't reverse my decret to close the barrier Y/N. I'm sorry, you know that no matter what, I'll always be there for you; but I have a kingdom to think of and, even if Hades has helped us out and, even if he's your friend or… whatever he is," she chuckled, both of you joining for a second, "I can't overlook the crimes he's committed."
Your head and your heart were divided. You knew that Mal was speaking as a queen and not as a friend, and were utterly happy that she supported you, even with everything that was going on between her and Hades; but you couldn't stop yourself from being disappointed in the fact that she didn't even consider letting him out of the Isle.
Even so, you gave her a tender smile and hummed, "I know M, and I wouldn't think of asking you to do it for me. I just had to talk this out with you, it didn't feel right to keep it to myself."
"We're happy for you, Y/I," Evie smiled.
"Very," agreed Mal.
…..
Now, a few days later, you were happy again, as happy as you could be with everything that had happened. Standing between Evie and Carlos, you clapped as Ben and Mal appeared on the balcony.
"Lady Mal and I wanna thank you for celebrating our engagement with us today. I couldn't be prouder or happier to call you my Queen." Ben looked at Mal lovingly, and to be honest you felt only a bit jealous of their happiness; but they both deserved it, after going through so much. "So… raise your glasses to our future Queen of Auradon."
"To our Queen of Auradon!”
"To our Queen of Auradon!" you cheered.
"Speech, Your Special-ness," mocked Carlos.
Jay followed, "speech, Your Fancy One."
"Speech, your oh-so-royalness," you winked at her.
She chuckled and smiled apologetically, then she fell serious and the crowd became silent.
She turned toward Ben, "I can't. I can't be Queen of Auradon. I can't turn my back on the Isle."
After you looked at her, nodding in encouragement, she began talking to the people. 'We made a decision… to close the barrier forever; and it was my idea, but it's wrong. I've learned that you can't live in fear because it doesn't actually protect you from anything. You never know where the bad is gonna come from. And you never know where the heroes are gonna come from either."
Carlos grabbed your hand, in assurance.
Mal continued, "Without Uma and her pirates, Auradon would be gone. And without Hades, my father, Audrey would be gone. We are all capable of good and bad, no matter which side of the barrier we come from. And that's why I can't be Queen of just Auradon. I have to be Queen of the Isle, too. And it's time that we take the barrier down forever."
Ben placed a hand on her back, and spoke in her support. "I choose to be a King who moves forward. It's time for forgiveness. It's time for new beginnings. The barrier will come down!"
"Yes!" "Woo!" you and Carlos cheered.
"Bring it down, Mal," and so, the five of you did it together.
After everyone on both sides had processed what had just happened, a sea of villains and vks flooded the bridge and came to Auradon; your eyes surfed the crowd, looking for the face you wanted to see, but he was nowhere in sight. Some of the Auradon kids made their way to the gates, to welcome the newcomers, so you joined your friends at the very front of the bunch.
Everyone was dancing and singing and celebrating, so you let the vibes absorb you. You danced and cheered with the rest, but when the party mood dimmed out a bit, you finally saw the spikes of blue hair that you were looking for moments before. However, you didn't approach Hades, you went straight to Mal.
"He came," you said, anxiety dripping from you.
She smiled at you reassuringly and advised, "Get out there and tell him how you feel; he's a complete idiot not to feel the same."
"M, I can't," you insisted, "what if he doesn't?"
She smirked at you, "as I said, only a complete idiot wouldn't like you back."
You let out a breath, shook your fear out, and looked around to see where he was. Much to your despair, or your relief, he had been standing behind a group of people nearby.
"So, how exactly do you feel?" he smirked. "I think it wasn't clear enough the other day."
"Look, I've liked you for quite sometime now," you confessed. "Maybe a few decades. The kiss the other day, it was just me spilling it all; you don't have to like me back, but I just had to tell you."
" 'Dude, chill! Don't get all cheesy on me'," again, there was his cheap impression of you.
This time, you couldn't help but laugh and roll your eyes at him and, before you could say anything, his hands flew to your waist and his lips were on yours once again. This time, both of you were absorbed by the moment and let the kiss be everything that the first one had not been. He bit your lower lip and granted himself entrance to your mouth, which you accepted happily. You separated to catch your breath and smiled. He looked at you like he had before and avowed, "Nah, I think I don't like you that much, little flame."
Once again, you laughed and punched him playfully, "shut up, really."
"Or what?" he challenged, making you blush.
You recovered quickly, and whispered into his ear, "I guess you'll find out later, maybe at my place."
"Welcome to Auradon, by the way." You kissed his cheek, grabbing his hand and leading him to where Mal and the others were.

AN: hi! this is a work in progress fanfic i’m uploading in advance of 15 chapters, so please show this some love, also sorry in advance for typos and spelling errors, my grammar is shit ;/ please enjoy!
I was so young. Too young. I didn’t understand why anything happened. I grew up in Agrabah with my parents and my brother, Aziz. But it wasn’t the dream vacation destination everyone in Auradon sought it out to be. It was a wreck. Jafar and Hades had invaded Agrabah and fought against my parents for revenge. Agrabah was damaged after their attack and our government had struggle to repair itself. So we had to live in a semi-permanent safe home for quite some time. By the way, I was also cursed by Jafar as a kid and I could shape shift into a tiger and develop other powers in the future. In my home, Mom was always stressed. Yelling and screaming how we needed to be better than they were to protect our city, especially me with my powers. My brother and I both took fencing classes, martial arts, learn how to shoot, every survival skill in the books before taking boys and girl Royal etiquette classes. Mom was the one who was particularly hard on me and my older brother throughout our childhood. Dad, not so much. He spent a lot of time in meetings in Auradon City. That’s how my first friendships began. He was great friends with King Adam and Queen Belle, elected leaders of Auradon. Ben, their only child was shy around me at first. He was intimidated by my mature stature. He like horses, painting, books, and food. I liked singing, fencing, and dancing but I also had a love for food and books so we got along through those things. We would always talk about the different ingredients in our cultures foods. His French pastries and my Arabian comfort foods. We were an inseparable pair of friends. And then I was introduced to Audrey. She joined our group soon after King Adam and Belle has decided to promise my parents and Audrey’s parents to a trust bond. A promise that would have one of us marry in the future. 9 year old me definitely didn’t want ANYTHING to do with dating my best friend. Neither did Ben. But Audrey, she was so persistent. She would constantly try to grab his attention. She was such a cheeky little girl. Raised to be such a lady compared to my more loose and carefree attitude. Somehow, Ben was happy around her. Our group soon expanded, and I met the greatest person ever. Li Lonnie, my greatest friend ever. Daughter of Fa Mulan and Li Shang, she was like me. Mature, strong, intelligent, and such a beautiful kid. Sure, she didn’t have my hazel eyes but she was such a pretty girl. She spoke so intelligently and when she spoke it was law. She was one of my inspirations as a kid. And still is :)
Time passed and we realized we weren’t kids anymore. My brother had to go away to a school in Auradon. And I was alone soon again. But I had my friends. But my child-like manners went away when I realized it was soon my turn to go to Auradon. So, I ran away. But you’ll hear more about that in the future.
Freshman year of high school. Audrey and Ben has broken off from our group and started dating in High School. Audrey has changed so much. She was such a sweet girl with a big heart but had begun to morph into a self-absorbed teen. Lonnie was still the same kind-hearted best friend. When I arrived in Auradon, I had a familiar face to help me. My cousin, Jordan. Daughter of the Genie. Everyone in that school was so nice that it hurt. My mother had raised me not to believe everything in front of me. But one particular thing or something changed that. A blonde boy with short curly hair and beautiful blue eyes had captured my attention. I still remember when our eyes had locked for the first time in the school courtyard. It was a whole new experience for me. I suddenly felt happy inside. Like a new found confidence in me was discovered. But my cousin Jordan advised me not to approach the boy. Chad Charming, son of Prince Charming and Cinderella. The most popular boy at Auradon Prep. Every girl would fawn over him endlessly. One day I had found a note from him on my lunch tray to meet him in the gardens. I swear we talked for hours about everything. We talked about our dreams, our experiences, our hopes. He made all my dreams happen. I wanted my first date to be at a carnival and he made that happen. I wanted something from the mall and he got it for me. I thought everything with him was just fine. Until that party. Ben had thrown a party for all his friends at Auradon Prep and Chad and I were there. Everyone was drinking except me. Imagine, prestigious kids of Royalty breaking illegal drinking laws. I didn’t know at the time but the punch was spiked heavily with Vodka. I never drank Vodka after that damn party. Jane, the headmistress, Fairy Godmother’s daughter had come to my dorm crying. She kept saying “I can’t take this anymore”. She had gave me the worst news of my life. She had seen Chad take me upstairs while I was drunk and touch me in explicit manners. Essentially, my boyfriend decided to rape me at my best friend’s party. I was sickened by that. And when my family pressed charges and got a restraining order on him, the case ended in a settlement. He didn’t even serve time. Because the judge was a family friend of the Charmings. I was devastated. I cried for weeks. I didn’t eat. I didn’t sleep. I just cried. Lonnie visited me every day while I was out of school. She had told me that Chad had moved on and was doing perfectly fine. I was miserable for all of Sophmore year.
By the way, my name is Adri Ababwa and I’m the world’s stupidest masterpiece. But you’ll see why later.
------------------------------------------------------------
“Adri,” My best friend, Ben called out.
My eyes widen, suddenly alarmed from my name being called.
“What’s up?” I say striding over to Ben’s side as he looks out the window of his parlor.
”I spoke with my parents about the proclamation,” Ben says.
I roll my eyes, realizing what’s about to happen.
”I told you your idea was stupid. Your dad would never let you bring Villain kids over-“
”They approved it,” Ben says, stopping me between my sentence.
My eyes widen in disbelief.
“Oh. Oh! I guess that’s good for you I guess,” I say nervously.
Ben takes both of my hands in his.
”Listen, I know things were rough for you last year, but this year we need change in this world. And I’m gonna be the one to establish that change,” Ben says.
”Even if that means bringing the daughters of Maleficent and the Evil Queen and the sons of Cruella de Vil and Jafar to Auradon Prep?” I ask nervously.
”What did I say about that?” Ben asks cheekily.
”They’re not their parents,” I reply in a mumble.
”Right,” Ben says, patting my shoulder. Ben opens his mouth to say something but hesitates.
”What?” I ask.
”That‘s why your going to be my advisor,” Ben says.
I take a step back.
”Your crazy but okay,” I giggle.
Ben chuckles softly and goes to the phone to ask his secretary if Audrey is on her way to the room for her Coronation fitting.
I walk through the door and wish Ben good luck.
As I stride down the hall, I hop onto my sticker filled skateboard and race down the halls. I greet the guards surrounding the castle and slide the down the handlebars of the stairs. I see Audrey and stop to walk the rest of the way.
”Adri! It’s a pleasure to see after so long. Out of your depression, I see,” Audrey says snarkily.
”Sure! I’m fine. And I see your makeup is looking as creased as ever,” I reply in the same fashion.
Audrey huffs and rolls her eyes.
I strut off.
”Fucking bitch,” I mutter to myself, hopping on my skateboard and skating back to my dorm.
As soon as I reach my dorm, Fairy Godmother is standing by my door.
“Can you please give me the board?” Fairy Godmother asks.
”Can’t have any fun around here, can I?” I ask, giving her my board for the fifth time this week
“Not for the first week of school. Remember we have-“
”Press coming in to report on the school, I know Jane told me,” I say at the same time as Fairy Godmother.
“Good. Then I’ll see you soon,” Fairy Godmother says dismissing herself.
I turn around and head for the courtyard where I spot Jordan under our gossip tree.
”What’s new, pinky-Lou?” I ask.
”Hey, cuz. Just doing some newspaper projects. I writing about the secret camera web series of our school and the new kids coming to the Isle,” Jordan says.
”Damn, news does travel fast,” I scoff.
”Ben posted an announcement a couple minutes ago,” Jordan says.
I roll my eyes in disbelief.
“What if one of them is cute? You gonna go for it?” Jordan asks cheekily.
”HELL NO. I am never making the same mistake of opening up to a person ever again,” I yell.
”It’s gonna happen...” Jordan says in a song-like manner.
”Shut the fuck up!” I say.
The night I sneak out of my dorm and go to the kitchens to get a snack for Roxie, my baby tiger.
”Insomnia?” A voice says behind me.
I’m startled by the voice and I turn to see Lonnie standing over the counter.
”Yes, you asshole,” I sigh.
Lonnie laughs silently.
”You know someone’s gonna find out that it’s you recording the videos at lunch,” I say.
”Stop it. That’s top secret,” Lonnie says.
”Who cares? Everyone knows that they’re asshole and dickheads anyways. And your very lucky that I haven’t ratted you out to Jordan. She’s persistent,” I say, grabbing some bacon from the fridge and putting it in a pan
”That’s for Roxie, right?” Lonnie asks.
”Maybe not,” I say.
Lonnie laughs and I take a piece of cooked bacon and put it in my mouth.
I hum softly at the taste.
”Hey. Don’t be afraid to talk to me sometimes. Especially after what I saw,” Lonnie says.
Ah. The thing. After some time in my self-quarantine of Sophmore year, I decided it was time for everything in my life to end. So, I grabbed some pills and I did something I regretted. Lonnie saved my life that day. That’s why I love her so much.
“I know, mama,” I say softly as I cook the rest of the bacon.
”You have no idea how much I care, Adri,” Lonnie says, hugging me from behind me.
”Thats probably why I love when you’re around,” I chuckle.
Lonnie lays her head on my shoulder.
”By the way I signed ya up for the welcoming comitee with Audrey,” Lonnie whispers.
”What!” I yell.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two weeks later...
Someone starts banging heavily on my door. I open my eyes and the sound in my ears clears.
”ADRI! Wake up! Your late for the Vk’s welcoming,” Audrey screams from behind my door.
Maybe I should have stayed asleep. Damn you, Lonnie.
I put on this:
pin.it/5uiV7hV
And I walked out my door.
“Ben shouldn’t have made you his advisor if you were gonna sleep in,” Audrey says.
”I’m here aren’t I?” I reply.
”Shut up, let’s go,” Audrey says, grabbing my hand and dragging me down the stairs to the courtyard.
Oh god this is gonna be terrible.
Ben sees me and Audrey coming up next to him.
”What happened to you?” Ben asks.
”Slept in,” I mumble.
Ben chuckles and Audrey takes his arm.
”It’s fine by the way, it’s actually the first time in a while,” Ben says.
Fairy Godmother begins to greet everyone in the small group of band kids and cheerleaders until she reaches our trio.
”Ben, Audrey, Adri, how are you?” Fairy Godmother.
“Good,” We all say.
The limo pulls up and the band starts playing. The limo stops and two boys pop out fighting over a scarf.
My eyes glance towards to girls who come out of the other side of the car. One has short plum hair with a plum leather outfit to match. The other girl has long wavy blue hair with two crown braids at the front.
“Why do you want whatever this is?” One of the boys with gray hair says.
”Because you want it,” The other boy in a red beanie says.
Right off the bat you notice who’s who. And the boy in the beanie is definitely Jafar’s son.
“Leave it where you found it! And by that, just leave it.” Fairy Godmother says.
”Just cleaning up!” The boy with the red beanie says.
He puts the scarf back in the limo and his eyes immediately catch mine.
He catches me as I stare at his frame. His brown hair, his dark brown eyes, his muscular form and his leather outfit all catch me off guard.
His frown turns into a smirk and he strides towards me.
”Hello, foxy~ The name’s...Jay,” The boy introduces, attempting to flirt with me.
I laugh softly at his action.
”Your quite the catch aren’t you?” I remark with a smirk.
“Welcome to Auradon Prep,” Fairy Godmother says, stepping between us.
I whisper a little thank you to her and she nods.
”I’m Fairy Godmother, the headmistress,” She curtsies.
”As in, the Fairy Godmother? Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo?” The girl with plum hair asks.
”Bibbidi-Bobbidi, you know it,” Fairy Godmother says.
“Does she ramble like this much?” I ask Ben.
”All the damn time,” Ben says.
We snicker in unison.
Audrey nudges Ben.
”It’s so nice to meet you all. I’m Ben,” Ben introduces.
”Prince Ben. Soon to be King, right Bennyboo?” Audrey interjects.
I fake-vomit at the nickname and roll my eyes.
”You had me at Prince. My mom’s a queen so that makes me a princess,” The blue haired girl says, fawning over Ben.
”The Evil Queen has no Royal status here and neither do you,” Audrey smiles cheekily.
”Yes she does, otherwise Snow White would cease to be Royalty and she is her step-sister,” I comment with a smile.
Audrey raises a brow to stop me and I wink in the girl’s direction. She gives me a smile in return.
”This is Audrey. My-“
”Girlfriend. And future queen,” Audrey says.
”Last but not least, this is Adri. My advisor and my best friend,” Ben says.
”Your new wickedly cool best friend,” I say with a smirk.
”These three are going to show you all around and I’ll see all tomorrow. The doors of wisdom are never shut! Except library hours are 8:00 to 11:00 and you know I have a thing for curfew,” Fairy Godmother says, excusing herself.
”She tends to drag things out of proportion. Don’t mind her,” I say.
Ben chuckles and Audrey nudges his arm.
“It is so, so, so good to finally me... meet you all,” Ben starts as Jay hits his chest with a light punch.
“ This is a momentous occasion, and one that I hope will go down in history... Is that chocolate?” Shaking the gray haired boy’s hand that is covered in chocolate.
”As the day our two peoples began to heal,” Ben finishes.
“Or the day where you showed four peoples where the bathrooms are,” The plum haired girl says.
“A little over the top?” Ben asks her.
”More than a little,” She says.
”So much for my first impression,” Ben says awkwardly.
“You're Maleficent's daughter, aren't you? Yeah, you know what? I totally do not blame you for your mother trying to kill my parents and stuff. Oh, my mom's Aurora. Sleeping...“ Audrey starts.
”Beauty! Yeah I’ve heard the name. You know, I totally do not blame your grandparents for not inviting my mother to their stupid christening,” The girl responds.
”Water under the bridge!” Audrey fakes.
”Totes!” The girl replys in the same tone.
They laugh together pathetically.
“Jeez, can we get this over with?“ I scoff.
” OK. So how about a tour, yeah?“ Ben starts.
We start to move towards the front of the school.
“Auradon Prep was originally built 300 years ago before my father turned it into a high school when he was elected King,” Ben says, clapping his fingers to morph the statue.
The gray haired boy jumps into Jay’s arms.
”Carlos, it’s okay. My father made the statue to remind us that anything is possible,” Ben addresses.
I laugh at the boy’s banter. Jay sees this and drops Carlos to the floor. I can feel him lurking by me as we continue inside the school.
“ So do you guys have magic here? You know, like wands and stuff?” Mal asks.
“All that stuffs pretty much retired. Most of us are just ordinary mortals,” Ben says.
”Unlike me. I was cursed so...” I say clicking my tongue.
”And you happen to be kings and queens?“
“That’s true. Our royal blood goes back hundreds and hundreds of years,“ Audrey says, placing an arm around Ben.
”Doug,” Ben calls Dopey’s son down.
“Doug, will be showing you to your dorms. If you have any questions-“
”Ask Adri or Doug,” Audrey says, whisking him away.
“Um, hey guys. Hi, guys. I'm Dopey's son. As in Dopey, Doc, Bashful, Happy, Grumpy, Sleepy, and... Heigh-ho.,” Doug starts, his eyes landing on the blue haired girl.
I take the clipboard from him and read their names.
”Mal Bertha. Evie Grimhilde. Carlos De Vil. Jay Farr,” I read to myself.
I interrupt Doug as he talks about classes.
”I’ll be showing you to your dorms,” I say, walking up one staircase.
”Guys, it’s actually this way,” Doug points towards me as the go in the wrong direction.
They follow me until we stop at their dorm rooms.
”Boys, you have the larger dorm here,” I point.
”Sweet!” Carlos says, hopping inside.
”What’s in it?” Jay asks, me
”Two full size beds, a flat screen tv, mini fridge, 3D printer, gaming console, a bathroom for two, fireplace, and double closet,” I say off the top of my head.
”Thank god, that’s enough to keep them busy for hours,” Mal says.
Me and the girls turn away from their room but someone places a hand on my shoulder.
”Hey, can we talk after?” Jay asks.
”Why?” I ask, raising a brow.
Jay gives me a pleading looks and I roll my eyes, walking away.
”Girls, this is your dorm. With roughly the same things as the boys except a bigger closet and bathroom and no gaming console,” I say.
”This room needs more-“
”Purple? I supposed you would agree. Love your outfit by the way,” I compliment.
”You don’t look to horrible yourself,” Mal smirks.
”I made it by the way,” Evie adds.
“Fashion Designer, huh? You could make some bank with that,” I comment.
Evie smiles.
”If you need anything, I’m the first door down the hall,” I say.
I close the door to the girls dorm and turn to see someone completely unexpected. My smile turns into a frown as I see Chad Charming at the end of the hall. As I try and stride down the hall to Jay and Carlos’s room, his gaze meets mine.
”Well, well. Look who it is. Little miss court case,” Chad says, his lips curving into a smirk.
”Your lucky my restraining order is expired, Charming,” I snark as he draws near to me.
”You know, you’re lucky Ben and Lonnie are friends with you. Otherwise, everyone here wouldn’t give a damn about your little charity case,” Chad says cockily, running a hand through my hair.
My body tenses and my teeth clench as he touches my hair.
“Don’t do that,” I say through my clenched jaw.
”Or what?” Chad says, pinning me against the wall. His frame towering over me.
”You gonna sue me again just so that I could give your pathetic ass more money?” Chad asks.
”Get your fucking hands off of her,” A voice says from behind Chad.
I look over Chad’s shoulder to see Jay standing behind him with a scowl on his face.
I can practically feel my eyes change shape, pleading to Jay to help me.
Chad gets off of me and walks towards Jay confronting him.
”Is that a threat?” Chad asks.
”You gonna punch me if it is, Princey? You know, you probably shouldn’t mess with someone you barely know. I’m sure it’ll have serious consequences,” Jay growls.
Chad backs off, intimidated by Jay.
”Whatever, man,” Chad scoffs, taming a step back.
He turns to me, his smirk returning.
”I’ll see you later, babe,” Chad says, winking at me.
He walks away and I can practically feel the tears coming to my eyes.
”Who the hell does he think he is?” Jay scoffs.
My legs start to move down the hall, trying to get away.
”Hey! Where are you going?” Jay calls behind me.
”Leave me alone!” I choke.
Jay’s footsteps chase after me and he grabs my wrist.
”Stay out of my business and leave me the hell alone,” I say in a serious tone.
”What was that about though? And why do you look like your about to cry in any second?” Jay asks deliberately.
I growl under my breath.
”Because he’s my abusive ex-boyfriend who raped me while I was blacked out at Ben’s party! And now everyone pities the hell out of me and treats me like a child because I tried to commit suicide. Is that what you’re so desperate to get out of me?” I yell.
Jay is taken aback by my words. His brown eyes widen as he looks at me. Searching through my eyes and seeing the pain in them.
”Shit, I’m so sorry. Look, I will never ever do that to you ever again,” Jay says, concerned by my action.
”Listen, don’t make promises you know you can’t keep,” I say.
Jay turns to leave but I grab his wrist.
”You forgot you tell me what you wanted to speak about,” I say with a smirk.
Jay scratches his neck nervously.
”Sorry. I was just so concerned about the way that guy was talking to you that I didn’t even realize,” Jay explains.
I chuckle lightly at his concern. How is he so chill after that? After I just yelled at him?
“I was just wondering if I could learn a little more about you. I mean-since we know a little bit about Ben and Audrey so,” Jay says.
I giggle lightly at his question. Then I hesitate, remembering this is the son of my parent’s enemy. But suddenly, my new found confidence tells me “Fuck it”.
”Well, I’ve lived in Auradon for 3 years. I like Art a lot. And um, I’m the daughter of Aladdin and Jasmine,” I say shyly.
Jay erupts in a light chuckle. My brows furrow at his actions.
”Did I say something wrong?” I ask.
”No, but that does explain everything,” Jay says with a smirk.
”Explain what exactly?” I ask, confused by his action.
”The comebacks, the way you roll your eyes, the outfit, and the way you act around danger. You have that “I really don’t give and shit sometimes attitude”. I’m assuming it’s family trait,” Jay laughs.
I roll my eyes at his banter.
”Sure, dipshit. And you know wanna know what gives you away?” I ask cheekily.
”What?” Jay says, playing along.
”The fact that you prance around me, eyeing me just like your father did to my mother when she was my age,” I say with a smirk.
His eyes widen, catching him off guard.
”And I promise you, your little concerned or flirtatious act isn’t gonna always cut it with me, pretty boy,” I say, tapping his shoulder and turning to leave.
I look behind me and see him smirk behind me as I walk to my dorm.
That boy is gonna keep trying to win me over. And I’m in for the long game...
The Problem with Mal (part 1/3)
Or, Framing and Why It’s Important
Let me get this out of the way right away: I love Descendants. I love DCOMs, I always have, and I love musical DCOMs even more. High School Musical and its sequels were my whole life growing up, and I can sing every word of every Camp Rock 2 song right now from memory (even though I didn’t like Camp Rock 1; don’t hate me.) But what I love even more than musical DCOMs is Disney Movies. Aladdin, Mulan, Hercules, these are some of my favorite movies from growing up, so combining Disney Movies with Disney Channel Original Movie/Musical? The most galaxy-brained idea imaginable from my point of view.
BUT.
I have a problem with the writing in Descendants. More specifically, I have a problem with Mal.
Quite frankly, I just don’t like Mal. I think she’s mean, and I think the movies would be better off if she wasn’t in them. If I completely turn my brain off and absorb the story the way I’m sure the writers want me to I could be fine with her, but the second I begin to think about any of her actions beyond the surface or the implications of those actions I remember why I don’t like her. I didn’t like her in the first movie, and that feeling has only grown exponentially with the release of every moment. All of that culminated in D3, where my Mal-hate has reached its peak. It has bubbled over, and I must release it somehow.
So what am I going to do with that? I’m going to write about it. Why? Mostly because my brother wouldn’t listen to me complain/rant about it and I had to put these emotions somewhere. Let’s do this.
DISCLAIMER(S)
1. This is literally a giant anti-Mal hate post. I’m going to try to keep this as even and fair as I can, but I’m not going to pretend like this is an unbiased assessment. If you are a Mal stan, this is the part when you click away.
2. I am by no means a literary or film analyst. I am technically a “writer”, but that’s about all the credentials I can provide. If you’re looking for actual academic discussion, you are going to be sorely disappointed.
3. This has nothing to do with Dove Cameron. I actually like Dove, I think she’s a talented actress and singer (rapping and dancing notwithstanding). I mean, I watched every single episode of Liv and Maddie when I was way past too old for that to be acceptable. Dove Cameron is probably a fine human being, I really appreciated what she said about the addition of politics into the Descendants universe, and I actually like her in the role, I just wish I liked the role itself. But I don’t want anyone to take this as an attack on her as a person or anything.
4. I read the Isle of the Lost when it first came out like a thousand years ago, and the Wikipedia synopsis for Rise of the Isle of the Lost. I also watched the first three or four episodes of Wicked World and I can’t remember a single thing that happened in them. With that said, this essay is ONLY about the movies. The movies should be (and are, I believe) able to stand on their own, and at this point, I’m not even sure if the tie-ins are considered canon anymore. With that said, there are some things from the tie-ins that are pretty much common knowledge among fandoms (Uma and Mal didn’t get along on the Isle because Mal was kind of a bully, the VKs’ parents were abusive, etc) that probably bled into this essay. If there’s something I wrote about that has been rendered noncanon by the movies please let me know. On the same track, please don’t comment saying that something from Wicked World explained/justified/whatever else a point that I make, because it’s not going to change my argument.
5. This is not, like, me passing judgment on Mal stans. I’m not saying that Mal stans are bad or dumb or whatever for liking her character. I don’t really expect this to change anyone’s mind about stanning Mal either. This is purely a cathartic exercise for myself that I decided to inflict on the world for some reason.
Okay, I think that’s about it. If you have any thoughts at all on this, please come talk to me about it! Agree, disagree, love it, hate it, I literally just want to talk to other descendants fans. Y’all ready to do this? I give you…
Part 1: Mal Alone
Let’s look at the series of actions and the motivations behind them for Mal’s character.
Descendants 1
Mal is chosen to go to Auradon; she is very reluctant.
Her mother demands that she steal the fairy godmother’s wand, Mal agrees.
Mal convinces the others to help her steal the wand; they break into the museum but fail to retrieve it.
Mal learns that positioning herself as Ben’s girlfriend will give her the best shot at retrieving the wand, she spells Ben into falling in love with her.
As all this is happening, Mal is gaining popularity at school for her ability to provide magically beautiful hairstyles.
On their first date, Mal begins to have actual feelings for Ben, she considers releasing him from the spell.
Audrey, her grandmother, and the other AKs bully Mal and the rest of the VKs, and Mal regains her faith in the plan. She also takes away Jane’s magical hair.
Mal concedes from the plan enough to decide to release Ben from the spell, but only after the coronation.
Mal considers stealing the wand; before she gets the chance, Jane does so and accidentally opens the barrier.
Mal takes the wand back from Jane to give to her mother, Ben convinces her not to.
Mal defeats her mother and remains by Ben’s side in Auradon.
Notice a theme here? Mal is characterized by two things, and essentially two things only: her ambition and her survivalist spirit. I should clarify that when I say ambition, I don’t necessarily mean in the traditional, politically power-hungry sense. Mal is an opportunist. Every decision she makes is done with the intention of securing a position for herself, and usually a high-ranking position.
She rules the island before coming to Auradon and is reluctant to leave that position of power when given the opportunity. When she arrives at Auradon, she becomes the school’s magically appointed hairstylist, first to seduce information out of Jane, and then because it gains her popularity within the school. Notice how as soon as this popularity is taken out of the equation, Mal disappears all of the beautiful hairstyles? Mal wasn’t sharing her magic for any kind, selfless reason, but because it could get her something, and as soon as she stopped being able to get something, she took them away.
Mal also finesses her way into the already-occupied spot of the second most powerful person in the kingdom. From there every decision she makes is an attempt to keep that spot. It could be argued that Mal displayed some selfless impulse when she decided to free Ben from her love spell, but even this comes second to herself. She tells him explicitly that the cupcake is for “later”, as in, after the coronation and after she and her mother have already taken over, and when he eats a bit anyway, she yells “No!” at him. Maybe she does feel something for Ben, but he still clearly comes second to herself.
Then in the finale, she chooses good, not because it’s the right thing to do, but because it “makes her happy”. Although this movie was marketed as “villain kids learning to be good,” among other things, Mal never actually learned this lesson. She is okay playing second fiddle to her mother for a little bit, but her pivotal moment of growth is ultimately her deciding that she’d rather be Ben’s number two, and there she remains.
Don’t believe me? Let’s look at the second movie.
Mal opens the movie trying to fit herself into the perfect princess/girlfriend role, which makes her unhappy.
On a date with Ben, she gets caught using magic and attempts to spell him into forgetting their argument.
Mal runs off from her date and away to the Isle. Once there, she immediately reverts to her villain self, even going so far as to dye her hair in a stunning bit of Disney subtlety.
While there, Uma, her old rival, kidnaps her boyfriend. She works to get him back but maintains that she will be staying on the Isle after he is safe.
Mal and Evie sing a beautiful song about how much they mean to each other, but it does not change her mind.
During the battle, Mal (apparently) changes her mind. She returns to the Isle with Ben and her friends but seems unhappy about it.
At the coronation, Mal again slips into her “perfect” persona, shown by her wearing Auradon’s colors.
Uma arrives at the coronation, having spelled Ben into falling in love with her. Mal is heartbroken and tries to leave.
She is stopped by Jane revealing Ben’s coronation gift to her, a stained-glass picture of her in her Isle colors.
Mal true-love’s-kisses Ben awake. She turns into a dragon and fights Uma. When she turns back, she is dressed in the gown depicted in the picture.
In this movie, too, Mal makes every decision with the intention of securing her personal standing. She dislikes being forced to play a part at the beginning of the movie, but she is willing to put up with it if it means getting to stay Ben’s girlfriend, even to the point of spelling her boyfriend who she claims to love. When she believes for a second that that option could be lost to her, she immediately retreats to the Isle, where she is guaranteed some measure of power.
When she arrives, however, she finds that someone has usurped her position on the Isle, and it is Uma, her old rival. When she discovers that Uma has kidnapped Ben, she tries everything to get him back. This, it could be said is an altruistic act, done out of love for another person, but even this is tarnished because she clearly does not love Ben enough to be with him. She makes that very clear over and over again. She even sings a whole song about how much she loves Evie but again, not enough to leave her position of power.
So if it’s not love, why else would she go through so much trouble to rescue Ben? Simple: she cannot allow her rival to get a leg up on her. Mal spends the rest of the movie after she discovers Uma is involved working to publicly undermine her. Why else would she agree to an arm-wrestling match of all things in front of Uma’s entire crew? When they leave the isle after rescuing Ben, Mal doesn’t end up with them because she changes her mind about Ben or Evie, but to prevent Uma from escaping after her. For two straight movies now, Mal has refused to make even a single unselfish decision.
Let’s move on to Descendants 3, arguably the worst offender.
Mal opens the movie helping the other four VKs announce the new arrivals into Auradon.
She is next shown keeping an eye out for Uma, the only other person who poses a threat to her.
Ben proposes to her, securing her position as Queen of Auradon.
Mal, Ben, and the other VKs return to the Isle to pick up the chosen children, but as they are leaving, Hades almost escapes.
When Hades, her estranged father, and Uma, her bitter rival, both appear to pose a threat, Mal suggests that they close the barrier permanently and prevent any other VKs from crossing over.
She lies to Evie about her role in the closing of the barrier to preserve their friendship.
When Mal discovers that Audrey, her original bully, poses a danger to Auradon, and herself specifically, she returns to the Isle to beg her father for help in the form of a magical ember.
On the way back, they are stopped by the Sea Three, who steal the ember from her. In exchange for the ember and their help with Audrey, Mal agrees to release all the children from the Isle, a promise she does not intend to keep.
Back in Auradon, Mal and Uma butt heads over leadership of their uneasy alliance. When Uma suggests they split up and go check Audrey’s cottage, Mal scoffs at this idea.
When they ultimately end up going with Uma’s plan and finding Audrey’s diary as a result, Mal thanks her for her contribution.
Evie is anxious about whether true love’s kiss will work on Doug. She sings a song about it, and Mal and Uma are seen behind her, encouraging her and providing backup vocals.
Audrey attempts to trap them inside the cottage, and Mal and Uma are forced to work together to free themselves.
At the Fairy Cottage, Mal admits that it was her idea to close the barrier permanently and that she still intends to go along with this plan.
Mal’s group implodes, and she sings a song about how she intends to get her happy ending.
Mal finds Audrey and attempts to battle her as a dragon. Uma, on the ground, forgives her for some reason. They combine magic and defeat Audrey, who goes into a coma.
Mal has her father temporarily escorted from the Isle so that he can wake Audrey. They reconcile.
Mal’s friends forgive her for the closing of the barrier, even the Sea Three, who apparently have no problem with returning to the Isle.
Before an audience of Auradon citizens, Mal announces her plan to close the barrier permanently. She finishes by saying that she cannot be the Queen of Auradon, she has to be Queen of both (the Isle and Auradon).
They take down the barrier and Mal is reunited with her father. At the end of the movie, the four original VKs return to the Isle to visit their parents.
Descendants 3 is interesting because it combines some of Mal’s most self-serving actions with her only three altruistic ones. Halfway through the movie, Uma makes a suggestion about how to find Audrey. Although Mal initially ignores her, the idea proves to be a good one, and Mal thanks her for her idea. This was Mal’s first entirely selfless action in three movies, which I underlined above because it is so significant.
A short while later, Evie is shown angsting about whether she and Doug are really True Love through song. In the background, Mal and Uma support her, both emotionally and through backup vocal “do-waps.” This is notable because it is the first time Mal is ever seen supporting one of her so-called friends, but we’ll get to that later.
The third and final act, also underlined above, is even more significant. Mal calls her estranged and neglectful father from the Isle to wake Audrey from her coma. This is where I must truly give Mal credit. Coming face to face with her abusive (yes, neglect is a form of abuse) father in order to help a person who bullied her and became a villain to hurt her specifically is a truly selfless action. It must have been hard for her to face him again so soon after he told her “You’re stronger with those daddy issues” (yuck). Furthermore, it would have been easy for her to leave Audrey in her coma, as Audrey had never been kind to her. This action required actual sacrifice and was done for no personal gain on Mal’s part, which makes it basically the best thing she’s ever done. Unfortunately, this scene arrives on the tail of a movie dedicated to showcasing Mal’s worst impulses at increasingly higher levels.
For the rest of the movie, Mal’s modus operandi of doing everything possible to secure her own position is in full effect. It is no coincidence that the moment she has the most to lose (Her position as Queen of Auradon at the hands of her father and her biggest rival) is the moment she makes her most callous and self-serving decision yet: to close the barrier permanently, essentially dooming all of the children still on the Island to a lifetime of poverty and oppression. Even within a small, unstable group of the original VKs + the Sea Three (and Celia I guess), Mal cannot bear not being the one in charge, arguing with Uma at every turn. And when her supposed best friends and her fiance are turned to stone, does she show any sadness for them at all? Of course not. She sings a Broadway song about how determined she is to find her own happy ending.
This, of course, culminates at the end of the movie, when Mal decides they should bring down the barrier. As an aside, bringing down the barrier is a terrible idea, because releasing all of the actual villains on the families of the heroes whose lives they attempted to ruin is… unwise, but I digress. On paper, this should also be considered a selfless act, but of course, Mal undermines it by claiming that she cannot be Queen of Auradon, she “must be the queen of the Isle too.” Her final act is synonymous with her biggest bid for power yet, and unbelievably, it works. Thus, Mal ends the third movie the same way she started the first, vying for power at the expense of Auradon (and basically everyone else.)
Mal is an incredibly selfish character. She makes three total noble decisions over three movies, and they all happen in the final installment. Amazingly, I don’t think this makes her a bad character, nor do I think this is bad writing on the part of the screenwriters. What makes this bad is the way her actions and “arc” are framed.
Self-serving protagonists can work. Look at Kuzco from The Emperor’s New Groove, or Rebecca in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, or even Bojack of Bojack Horseman (disclaimer, I have not seen CxGF or Bojack Horseman, these comparisons are based on my surface-level understanding of these shows and a cursory skim of Tvtropes. Y’all are welcome to tell me why I’m wrong about this.) The difference is, if you want your audience to root for these self-serving main characters, you have to show them going through some sort of growth or arc to become more selfless, particularly if you are writing a DCOM about the merits of being good. But unfortunately, this is only the beginning of the problems with Mal’s character.
The Goddess of Life, The King of Death: Chapter Two
Dinner was delightful. Marinette was able to have foods she had sorely missed in the six years she had been away from Olympus. Hades even had some cookies with bits of ambrosia from her family’s stall at the local market. He had walked her back to the gates of his realm. Soon, they reached the surface and she turned to him.
“I can’t thank you enough, your majesty. Not only for having me for dinner, but also for allowing me to stay in your realm at all. You would have been well within your rights to punish me for trespassing.” Felix could see Charon in the background, smirking at his boss. May as well give him something to smirk about.
“I would never turn away a lady, especially not one so fair as you.” He took her hand in his and gently kissed her knuckles. “If you would like, you can join me for dinner again. Say, a week from now?” He smiled at her, and watched as she blushed again.
“I would like that, your majesty.” She managed to squeak.
“Please, my lady, call me Felix.” The girl then gave him a smile that made his brain stall for a moment.
“So long as you call me Marinette. Until next week, Felix.” She bobbed a short curtsey, and made her way through the gates to the land above. Felix stood there for a moment before his friend made his way over.
“Well Felix, I never thought I’d see the day! You, romancing a lovely young goddess. If I did, I expected it to be some power play, but that girl left you, the ice-hearted king of the dead, speechless. I’m impressed.” His friend laughed, and Felix huffed.
“Really Claude, you needn’t be so rude. Lady Kore is a lovely young goddess.”
“Wait, Kore? You mean the goddess who has Olympus in knots?” Claude’s jaw was slack.
“Maybe. You know I don’t keep up with gossip from Olympus. I’m rather busy down here, you know. Speaking of, you have a line forming Charon. You best get back to work.” With that, Felix spun on his heel to head back to his palace and the paperwork that awaited him.
“Well boss, things are certainly about to get interesting…” Claude thought to himself as he readied the ferry.
XoxoX
And so, it went on. Every week Marinette would venture down below the earth and spend an evening with Felix. From there, it grew to visiting a few times a week for dinner, to him taking her on tours of the realm. She met all three of his friends, and grew a rapport with each. Her and Allegra gossiped about Olympus and had spa days. Her and Claude acted like siblings separated at birth. Her and Alain snarked and sassed each other, but would come together to prank Claude from time to time. It went this way form many years, until Marinette was soon spending more time in the Underworld than on earth. It had been twenty years since she had set foot on Olympus, and she was fine with that. She went up to the surface once in a while so that she could see her parents, as no-one but her Nona knew she was friends with the entire Underworld crew. Gina was rather chill about it. She had dropped in a few times, and jetted out a few days later. On one trip, Sabine had said something that nearly made Marinette choke on her nectar.
“That nasty little Lila girl is marrying Adrien next year. Somehow, she still has everyone convinced that she’s the goddess of life.” Marinette may not have choked, but she had spat crumbs all over the picnic blanket. After a heavy gulp of nectar, she had rasped out
“What? How?” Sabine had smiled at her daughter and handed her a napkin.
“She says that you’re the goddess of deceit and lies, and that you ran away for attention. What will happen to the cosmic balance is beyond me. The girl is obviously the real goddess of deceit, with how many deities are buying into her lies. I am happy that you’re okay dear. Your happiness has always been my number one priority. Your father really is sorry he couldn’t make it this time. He’s got an appointment with the happy couple today to decide on their cake. They’re having Audrey make the dress and everything. It’s being called ‘the event of the century’.” Both women laughed at that. “SO, how have you been dear? Tell me about your travels!” That was another thing. She and Allegra often dragged Felix away from his work to some odd place on earth, just to get him to take a break.
“The French have invented these delightful cookies, called macarons. I got Papa the recipe, they’re amazing. You’ll love them, I’m sure.” Mother and daughter chattered the day away, until the sun began to set. Marinette sighed and stood.
“Oh, how I wish you could come home without everyone saying such cruel things about you.” Sabine bemoaned. “Or at least stay out to see the moon. You and Luka got on so well when you were younger.” Marinette sighed and hugged her mother tight.
“I know, Mama, but if he sees me, he’ll tell everyone on Olympus where I am. I’m enjoying my life, and I can’t risk it.” Sabine squeezed her daughter tight.
“You can’t hold out forever, Marinette. Attendance at the wedding is mandatory, you know that. You have a year. I wish I could give you more.”
“But that’s a year away. For now, you need to head home. If you arrive back too late, there will be questions.” Both mother and daughter, no matter the risks, couldn’t help but stay in each other’s arms for a few minutes more. Marinette watched as her mother began to glow, before fading out of existence. She flipped up the hood of her cloak, and made her way into the woods. She was hurrying along to the gate way hidden in a pile of boulders when she heard a rustling noise behind her to the left. She hurried her pace. She may be goddess of life, but monsters could still hurt her, and some were hard to kill. She had almost made it to the rock pile when she saw someone trying to come at her from the side. In a panic, she changed her appearance. Her eyes became brown like Claude’s, her hair blonde like Allegra’s, and her facial structure warped to be similar to Alain’s. The figure stepped out of the trees, revealing a girl with dark hair and brown eyes. She wore a tunic and leggings, and carried a long thin sword. Marinette recognized her as Kagami, goddess of the hunt. This was bad. She had expected a mugger or a killer, not another deity!
“Maiden, what are you doing out so late at night all alone?” She seemed worried, like she feared for Marinette’s safety. Then, it clicked. Kagami had a group of girls that traveled with her on earth, maidens who had needed away from their lives for some reason or another.
“I am on my way to gather herbs for my mother. She is ill and needs them soon. I must hurry, ma’am.” Marinette poured her anxiety into her voice, trying to sound desperate.
“What herbs does she need, maiden?” Kagami placed a hand on her shoulder in an attempt to soothe her.
“Um, garlic, thyme, sage and mint, ma’am.” Kagami nodded, before reaching into her satchel. She dug around for a few seconds, before handing Marinette three jars.
“Take these and run home, maiden. May your mother be well soon.” Kagami turned on her heel, and made her way back into the woods. Marinette tucked the jars close to her chest, and hurried through the woods. She waited outside the boulders for a few minutes, making sure that there was no-one watching, before tapping the center boulder seven times. It rolled aside, and Marinette scuttled down the stairs, nearly running into Claude at the bottom.
“Woah! You good, ‘Nette?” He grasped her shoulders, and checked her over for any injuries.
“’m fine, Claude. Just almost got caught.” She let her features melt back to normal, and vanished the jars she still held. “Let’s head back. I’m so tired. I also have gossip for tomorrow.”
“Oooh! Is it juicy?” He crooned as he rowed across the river.
“It’s certain to cause a stir, that’s for sure.”
XoxoX
Felix glanced up from the report he was reading when Marinette entered his office. She paused long enough to remove her cloak before slumping into an armchair he kept by his desk for when she helped with paperwork. She let her head sag against the back of the chair and let out an almighty groan.
“That bad?” He asked.
“Worse. Adrien and Lila are getting married next year, and it’s mandatory. Unlike the yearly galas and bells, I can’t skip out.” She began massaging her temples.
“Really? Well, this gives us time to prepare at least. We can commission a dress, have some jewelry, made, and figure out what to tell anyone who asks where you’ve been. I don’t imagine you’ll want to tell them that you’ve spent almost the last eight years in the Underworld.” He grabbed a quill and a blank piece of parchment and began jotting down plans. “We could say you’ve just been traveling the mortal realm. Or that you’ve been with Lady Ondine, under the sea. She likes you well enough, she should be willing to play along.”
“Felix.”
“We’ll need to make it look like we don’t know each other.”
“Felix.”
“That would be rather hard to explain.”
“Felix!” She yelled, interrupting his tirade. “We could just tell the truth. You and I are friends and I spend a lot of time down here. They think I’m the goddess of lies and deceit. To them, it would make perfect sense for me to spend my time here.” Felix dropped his head into his hands with a groan.
“How did I not think of that?” She giggled a little. He may act cold and stone-hearted when around his subjects, but Felix was actually a bit of a drama queen.
“That’s what I’m here for. To fill in the gaps. For example, did you order those crates of ambrosia for the isles of the blessed yet?” Felix winced.
“Creation above and below, what would I do without you?” He dug through the piles of scrolls on his desk, and began to panic when he couldn’t find the order form. Marinette cleared her throat, and held out the appropriate parchment to him.
“It was on the floor beneath your chair.” He took the parchment from her and kissed the inside of her wrist.
“Truly, I am the luckiest man in the world. Remind me again how I got you to agree to let me court you?” She blushed in the way that he loved. It dusted a petal pink across her peaches-and-cream skin, along her nose and cheeks and the tips of her ears.
“Allegra asked if we were courting and we both said yes.” He shook his head.
“Remind me later to send her a basket of those fruits she loves.” Marinette merely giggled, before nodding.
“I’m going to go tell Allegra and Alain, if they don’t already know. Love you.” She kissed his forehead and headed for the door. He waited till the door and shut before sighing. He pulled open a small drawer in his desk, an withdrew a small box, maybe a foot square. Nestled within on a bed of black velvet was a crown of platinum, embedded with rubies and garnets, all round cut, and layed in a stunning design. The earrings were in a seperate box.
“And I you. Let’s just hope you say yes. I guess this will have to wait. Creation knows father would be furious if I got married before Adrien.” He shut the box, ignoring the ring that sat in the center of the box, encompassed by the crown. After all, he had looked at it every night for the last two years.
DESCENDANTS 3 - REVIEW
WARNING! SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT, DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE MOVIE!! from this point onwards, reading is on your responsibility. you have been warned.
Alright, Descendants 3, where to begin with this...
First off, thinking that this is Cameron Boyce’s last movie ever, it makes me feel very sentimental and sad and I hope that the movie would’ve done him justice more. But I’m afraid that while it was a cute and aesthetically pleasing movie, that is about it.
After watching it a couple of times now, I have one word for D3: clusterfuck. I’m not going to lie. D1 was great, D2 was good but D3 wasn’t really the ending this saga deserved. NOW KEEP IN MIND that I haven’t read the books and I personally think that the movie still should take time to explain things. Plus the books came after the first movie anyway so...
In a nutshell, the plot is inconsistent, the movie is rushed and lot of the character development (save from Mal’s and Audrey’s) is pretty much murdered and just ditched away.
Beginning with a song like (Good to Be Bad) like every Descendant movie, it gives the movie the energy that it lacks towards the end. The VK’s choose Smee’s sons, Celia and Dizzy to come to the Isle and return to Auradon, only to get them after giving them time to pack their things.
Next thing we see, Ben and Mal are getting ready to embark to the Isle with the VK’s. They stop in front of the Beast statue though and Ben sings (short acoustic verse “Did I Mention”) to Mal, then proposing to her. Audrey is not pleased but hey she’s back and damn she’s rocking that hair!
Now this is where things go a bit off the rails. I understand Audrey still holding resentment to Mal even though at the end of D1 she seemed to be amicable with her so - what’s the dealio Audrey? Of course we can assume that her resentment grew back during D2 - the movie she wasn’t in. Her grandmother is there and basically gives Audrey shit cause she lost Ben to Mal (like wth is it with this hatred from grandma, chill out lady...).
Mal, Ben and VK’s go to the Isle and while they’re leaving back Hades tries to break out and use his ember but Mal fights him (as a dragon) and gets him back inside. In Auradon, Audrey sits in her room and embraces her darkness (”Queen of Mean”, one of the best songs in my opinion, holy shit), stealing the Queen’s crown and Maleficent’s staff turning to Dark!Audrey and suddenly possessing magic and knowing how to use it without any training? Okaaay, shady much? I mean it could be the staff also controlling her so I’ll give the benefit of a doubt here.
Alright so Hades tried to get out, Mal makes the hard decision to shut down the barrier forever with Ben after reasoning with him and feeling guilt for possibly endangering Auradon. Cut to Evie’s little cottage-manor, Audrey pays Mal a visit, cursing her to turn into a hag. That kind of didn’t really serve a purpose in anywhere else than maybe Audrey’s mind if she thought that Ben wouldn’t love her? Idk man. Anyway, Mal can’t reverse the spell because “there’s nothing that can reverse the staff’s spell”. Oh but waaait....
The VK’s decide to get Hades’ ember, going to the Isle and suddenly Mal turns back again because dark magic doesn’t work in the Isle. So... Mal/VK’s just forgot that? I doubt it because they did live there for such a long time. Oh well, moving on. Celia is with them cause she runs errands to Hades. Meanwhile in Auradon, Jane’s having her birthday party and Audrey crashed it, cursing everyone asleep. Except Jane cause she jumps into the Magic Lake - again something that can reverse the staff’s spell that is supposedly non-reversable? Did anyone actually fact-check the script, I wonder... And well - she takes Chad with her. Oh the loyal, dumb puppy.
Alright back to the Isle, Celia gets the key and we meet Dr. Facilier shortly, he’s actually a nice man (oh and btw so was Dizzy’s grandmother aka. Cinderella’s stepmother before too...) which I have kind of hard time imagining BUT nonetheless I kinda like it? They get out and find Harry + Gil and couple other pirates stealing their bikes (same kind Mal took to the Isle in D2) and run after them. Celia and Mal go to Hades’ lair.
They find Hades napping, but then he wakes up, Celia trying to distract him so Mal can get the ember. But whoops, he grabs Mal’s hand. And then we learn something shocking! (not really) “Hi Dad.” Oh well look at that, Hades is Mal’s dad. Even though I recall that in the first movie it was said to be a human male? But then again, makes sense why Mal has such great magical powers. They argue and get a nice rock’n’roll duet together (”Do What You Gotta Do” and boy I’m fawning over Cheyenne Jackson’s voice!). Celia kinda does background “ooh”s which is... so weird really. Like why?
I’m not gonna lie, I kinda enjoyed the bickering chemistry between Hades and Mal as father and daughter. He clearly cares about her but tells her that her mother was not an easy person to be with and he never stayed in contact with Mal. Now this is about everything that we learn about their relationship. Mal has a certain resenment at him but Celia reveals that Hades being her father explains him asking about her. Mal tells her that Evie is the only one that knows.
Meanwhile in Auradon, Audrey visits Ben making him an offer to make her his queen again but he thinks she’s under a spell and Audrey realises he doesn’t care about her. She uses magic to turn Ben into a Beast and also turns Fairy Godmother running towards the Museum to get her wand into a statue (not shown how she made that happen really... but later on we see that she can apparently see ppl in the staff u know, like a CCTV kinda thing).
VK’s get back to the portal and when they cross over, Harry and Gil do too. They try to stop them and in the midst of it the ember drops to the water (spoiler: if it gets wet, it stops working). Uma catches it and then turns back into human. They strike a deal when Mal makes a promise to let any of the VK’s that want to get out of the Isle, get out.
So Uma, Harry and Gil are now going to Auradon with the VK’s to help them. Kinda reluctantly. Gil gets all pumped up for fresh food and all which is kinda cute x’D And Harry ofc is trying to steal money from a sleeping student but Jay stops him. Dude is awake though and tells the VK’s what happened. They go to look for Ben and go to his castle, eventually finding the walls clawed and end up in a fight between some armors that Audrey controls (”Night Falls”).
Eventually they beat Audrey together and almost celebrate. But not quite cause they are enemies. Evie is trying to play the middleman, suggesting an icebreaker game which doesn’t really take off. But props to her for trying. Also I should say that she suggested trying to be friends when they met Uma, Harry and Gil at the entrance to the Isle.
After the fight they split up - the boys go into the woods trying to find Ben while the girls go search Audrey’s room and Uma finds her diary where she mentions the fairie’s cottage. Then the girls go back to Evie’s where they found Smee’s twins and Dizzy sleeping as well as Doug. Evie tries too wake him up but can’t (duh, he’s under a spell). Uma’s all like “he’s under a spell. is she not a fast learner?” and Mal tells her that Evie’s emotionally involved. Which brings us to the ah so sweet - true love’s kiss (”One Kiss”). But Evie is unsure cause they haven’t used the L-word yet. When did Evie become so insecure though? She has been super confident throughout the series even though imho her storyline with Doug has NOT gotten the moment in spotlight it deserves. But wait, she kisses him after the song and he wakes up! Aww so it is true love. Bitches I wanted to see more of them before this bc they’ve been in the background (also can I mention that Doug has turned into like a young Nicholas Cage clone with his long hair and all and dam he’s cute!).
The boys find Ben, now in beast form and trying to kind attack them (and failing adorably) when Carlos calms him down and takes a splinter from his paw (i mean... he has paws now?). Kinda reminds me of Tinkerbell and the Neverbeast when Fawn took a splinter from the Neverbeast’s paw :’D Anyway, back to the story. Then Jane arrives with sort of a hose, getting Ben all wet with the water from the Enchanted Lake and he turns back too human - except he has a little beard/stubble and kind of fangs? Also Carlos and Jane meet again and are all cute together. Harry tries to make a move on Jane but Carlos literally blocks him, lol.
Back to Evie’s. Mal and Uma are talking when suddenly boards start covering the house. Audrey’s magic has gotten stronger cause Mal can’t reverse it alone but when Uma joins in with her shell, they manage to beat it, making Audrey angry.
They build up a plan and Gil, Doug and Jane go look for the Fairy Godmother while the other’s go to the Fairie’s cottage, finding Chad locked in a closet. They walk out and then comes the moment of truth. Evie tells Ben that Uma + the pirates joined them cause Mal promised that the kids from Isle can come to Auradon. She reveals that she lied to everyone, making her friends mad. Celia takes the Ember, throwing it into a pool of water. Uma and Harry leave. Evie faces Mal, who obviously feels awful and her friends are mad at her. Then poof, they’re turned into stone. Mal sings what is - I assume - the song to build up her confidence/self-searching (”My Once Upon a Time”) and confronts Uma asking for her help to beat Audrey. But Uma turns her down even after she tells her that she saw the good in Uma - that she really cares.
Next we have Celia calling for help cause Audrey has her on top of one of the towers. Mal turns into a dragon, trying to battle Audrey but can’t do it on her own. Uma and Harry happen to come back and Uma’s suddenly like “she can’t do it on her own, i’m here girl, i’m here” forgetting that Mal totally lied to them and kinda screwed them over and helping her igniting the ember again. With the help from the ember, she beats Audrey. Everyone is awakened, except Audrey who’s fading away after being hit back with the magic. Mal can’t wake her up even with the crystal and tells Ben, Beast, Belle and everyone else in the room that Hades could. While they doubt it, Mal tells them that he’d do it - for her, he is her father after all. Ben is a bit shocked but sends guards to get him from the Isle.
He’s brought to the Castle in shackles and he works his magic, waking Audrey up. She apologises to Mal and then Mal apologises to her as well as Ben and then Audrey’s grandma apologises to Mal. It’s an apologyfest, and all is fine again. Yay? Hades is escorted back to the Isle and has a nice little moment with Mal, giving her the ember. Celia, Uma, Harry and Gil also go back to the Isle. Mal and Ben attend their engagement party and she surprisingly declares that she can’t be the Queen of Auradon - she can’t turn her back to the Isle. So in conclusion of a long speech, they open the barrier (even though the Beast is against it but Ben shushes him :D) and Mal becomes the Queen of Auradon and the Isle. (”Break This Down”) The people from the Isle (with Uma’s leading) notice this too and meet some of Auradon’s people halfway and have this big closing number with lost of dance and singing.
And then people rejoice. Gil and Jay seem to have sparked a friendship. Harry brings comedy to the scene being like “so she’s deeeefinitely taken?” bout Mal, then trying to make a move on Evie and finally Uma who’s not having it. And then Harry ends up dancing with Audrey. Okay, seems legit. Then there’s Hades, being happy for Ben and Mal (and also giving Ben the “i’m watching you eyes”). They dance into the palace yard (or somewhere) and the scene cuts to the core four, staring at the passageway to the Isle, apparently to go meet their parents (cause they didn’t come to Auradon?) and the end credits roll.
ALRIGHT.
Plotwise yes, it’s a clusterfuck. The whole movie is very rushed, it’s like they tried to include too much things. Like said, at the end of D1, it seemed that Audrey and Mal were somewhat civil, then Audrey was spending some time in the fairies cottage/seven acres woods/something like that in D2 and we didn’t see her at all. Suddenly she’s all hateful and resentful again and her grandmother is being a total jerk to her. Whole turning into evil happened almost right after the movie opened so there was no proper lead to it really. Nothing to explain WHY Audrey went back to resenting Mal and Ben and Auradon.
Then Mal’s father. Alright, pretty much everyone knew by now that Hades was gonna be Mal’s father even though I recall that in the first movie or somewhere else it was said that it was a human male. What happened in their past could’ve and more so SHOULD’VE been dug into a little more cause Mal is resentful at him for not being around - but why wasn’t he around? Why didn’t he call her? After all, he had been asking about her from Celia so obviously he does care for her.
The other VK’s were even more pushed to the side than before. I do get that Mal is kind of the lead here, but they did kind of sideline their character development. The other VK’s were in such minor roles I could easily say that they might as well be taken out altogether. Evie tried to be a peacemaker, she gets a few lines in couple of songs and one song to herself. Her character has also been very confident and craving for love, kind of seducing Doug in the first movie and making him accidentally jealous in D2 and suddenly she’s insecure? Yeah, love can be scary sometimes but of all the characters I just don’t see it characteristic to Evie to suddenly become uncertain of herself in the terms of love. Jay’s more like acting as a guide to good to Gil and Harry for the time being and Carlos is just being his adorable self. Still can’t believe there was no Jarlos kiss! (also he got Jane a pendant saying “Jarlos” as her birthday gift, how adorbs!)
The main problem is that there isn’t really a proper climax in the movie. It starts off god and then falls flat on it’s ass. May I also point out that not ONCE in these movies have Mal and Ben had a duet together - yes they’ve shared songs but also with other people in them - and they are the “true love” couple after all which is a bit disappointing. I mean Ben has been kind of put into thee background in the movies too - and in this last one even more so, whenever the core four have been side to side. But even in the last movie - since they’re engaged after all - I was surprised that when they opened the barrier, Jay was next to Mal (as well as Evie), squishing her hand and her leaning into him. In the end Ben is the king and Mal’s fiancee so in my opinion, he should’ve been next to Mal, not behind her (as much as I do love Mal). And I mean I was also waiting that the other VK’s would’ve met their parents too. But no. Disappointment.
In a nutshell D3 is a movie about Audrey being a resentful brat and turning dark, introducing Mal’s dad pretty shallowly adding pretty much nothing into her story arc or character development. Except her forgiving her father pretty fast. Too much is trying to be fitted into 1hr45mins. Mal and Hades could’ve had their own movie working it out. Audrey could’ve had a thorough build up to what led her to the dark path.
Aesthetically it’s very pleasing and I enjoyed the music and I do love the cast. The end was kind of bittersweet and the whole movie was a bit unreal once you know that Cameron is no longer with us (rest in peace). So this is and end of and era. Despite this honest and well - unfiltered - review I thank the cast and crew of Descedants from the bottom of my heart that they have brought these movies to us.
Long live the VK’s!
A Clean Slate | Bal One-Shot
The first date after Cotillion. { 2,394 words } | { ao3 | ff.net }
It's where they had their first date but this date feels even more important. Then Mal had known it would at least go well. Ben had been under a love spell and hopelessly devoted to her. Now there's no love spell, no more magic, and no more lies. Mal thinks back to that date, about wondering whether he would still love her when the magic was gone. True love or not, she knows he has every right not to want to be with her after everything.
Mal has her hands clasped behind her back to hide their shaking as Ben approaches her, looking as handsome as ever. She knows she's one of the only one who gets to see him this way. The top few buttons of his shirt are open, his hair is messy and he's grinning the way she associates with her. It's partly how she'd known something was wrong at Cotillion. The unfeeling look in his eyes and the straight line of his mouth had made her feel sick even before she'd seen Uma.
His eyes move appreciatively over her, taking in her loose purple dress, white lace-up sandals and loose waves falling around her shoulders. She wanted to look pretty but she hadn’t wanted him to know. This is supposed to be a casual date, with swimsuits just in case they want to go swimming. In case he still wants to be with her when she lays it all on the table, she thinks and winces. Then Ben's eyes move from her to the blanket laying at her feet and he throws his head back and laughs.
"Sorry I'm late," Ben says when he's done laughing, resting his hands gently on her upper arms and pulling her in for a sweet kiss that makes her hands shake all the more as she rests them against his chest. Ever since Mal's abandonment and Ben's capture and Cotillion they've barely stopped touching, wanting the assurance the other is there.
"Two minutes. I don't know how I'll survive," Mal teases, looking at him with her own smile, her breath catching before she clears her throat. "I made lunch."
Ben looks down again, his thumb rubbing slow circles on her bare skin. "I see. It looks wonderful, Mal."
Mal's eyes meet his and she knows he can see how vulnerable that she feels, how much she's hoping he's telling the truth. But he's always been able to see and he's always been open with her. In his eyes, she can see the truth, that he loves her, that he's proud of her. She can see he doesn't care that on the blanket is a white plate with a pile of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and chocolate chip cookies that are slightly burned on the bottom.
"I have to be honest. Evie helped me with the cookies," she admits because she's told herself she's going to pretend she's under a truth spell today. Ben can see the real her but she needs to know that he loves all of it.
She's surprised when he kisses her again, his fingers tightening on her arms but it feels like a comfort. When Ben pulls back, he's flushed with happiness and he reaches up, cupping her cheek. "Thank you. I love you."
Those simple words make her happier than she ever thought was possible and it feels like it's threatening to bubble out of her. She has to tamp it down, at least for now. "I love you too. Now, come on. The cookies are still hot and I think dessert before lunch sounds perfect for today."
Ben follows her to sit down on the same side of the blanket as her, taking the cookie that she gives him with an ever polite thank you. She leans against one of the pillars, spreading her dress over her thighs and looking at the enchanted waters of the lake. "I can feel you thinking," Ben teases her.
She can hear it as the opening it is. She can also hear that he won't press her. He never has and for that she's grateful. It's been hard for her to open up, to understand that he's going to love her even when she messes up. She takes a bite of cookie, chewing to give her a few moments. "I dreamed about this place," she whispers finally, looking down and biting the inside of her lip. It's not the honesty that she'd wanted but it's a good conversation opener if she does say so. "When I was still on the Isle. I dreamed about this place. I dreamed of eating strawberries. I dreamed of you."
There's silence following her confession and she can hear his slow breathing. She's terrified of what he's going to say even though she knows that she shouldn't be. It's a memory that's precious to her and she's scared of him ruining it with a response that just isn't right.
"I dreamed about you too," Ben says and Mal 's eyes widen, wondering if he’s teasing her. Ben's smiling slightly, looking almost as confused as she feels. The confusion makes her think he’s being honest. "It was on the Isle, though. I fell and you helped me up. But I thought about you… about how beautiful you were. It's part of why I decided to bring you four to Auradon. Selfish, I know, but true."
"You never told me," Mal says and she's surprised by how much emotion that Ben's confession makes her feel.
"You never told me either," Ben responds gently and she has to nod because that's true. "I never really thought it was a good time. You were already so… unsure about everything in Auradon how was I to tell you that I'd dreamed about you? I know I didn't handle it well but I was trying. It makes sense now, knowing that we have a True Love."
Mal looks down, her fingers playing with the hem of her dress and Ben reaches out, tilting her chin up gently so that she has to look at him. He doesn't have to say anything but she can see his love for her in his eyes. She feels like she can see him saying she can tell him anything. "Did you and Uma really feel a connection?"
That's obviously not what Ben had expected and he blinks at her. "What? Mal, you know that was just a love spell. It was your spell. You know how it works."
"Yes but you're still yourself. You can still feel things that are your own. You… cared for me while you were under your spell," Mal says, knowing that the concept of a love potion itself is complicated. She doesn't want to go into the sciences of it, that's more Evie's department.
Ben nods and Mal can see that he understands. It scares her that he thinks about his answer. "I feel… sympathy for them. The same way that I feel for all of you. You grew up in bad situations and you've been forced to do difficult things because of it. I saw part of it when I was on the Isle but I know that I was sheltered from the worst of it, even by the pirate crew of all people. I got to know Uma when I was on the Isle, at least a little. So there's some sort of connection.
"I want to help them. I know that I could be friends with them, the same way that I'm friends with Jay, Carlos and Evie. But it's not the same," Ben says, cupping both of her cheeks this time, making sure that she's looking at him. As if she could look away. "Mal, I love you. No 'connection,' real or fake, will ever compare to that. I may want to help them but I want you by my side."
Ben's eyes swim with emotion and she feels a surge of love for him that nearly knocks her over. Cotillion, the art of being engaged to be engaged, had terrified her only a few days ago. Now, she knows that she wants that future too. She's young but she knows what she wants. Who can argue with love, with the feeling of safety and happiness and commitment, no matter how young they are?
Mal knows she needs to say something but she's afraid that if she opens her mouth she's going to cry. So Ben continues. "I'm sorry for our fight, I'm sorry for all of it."
"Me too," Mal says quickly and Ben smiles at her. "I was just scared."
"I know. And I know that I should've supported you instead of being so caught up in myself. I'm going to start making amends to everybody. But you need to know that we can fight and I'm still going to love you. No matter what happens, it's not going to change my feelings. You should hear how my mom and dad fight sometimes. But I know that it'll never change things between them."
Perhaps that's just what Mal needed to hear. It's similar on the Isle, of course. People fight and argue and they're still family. But that means something different there than it does here. Family there meant that you lived together and maybe provided for each other. Family here means something so much more magical.
Mal looks down, keeping her face emotionless until she swipes her finger across the side of one of the sandwiches and runs the glob of jelly down Ben's cheek. Then she laughs and he laughs with her and how is this what her life has become? "I thought that you'd want somebody like Audrey. When we were first together everybody talked about how we wouldn't last and about how you were making a mistake being with me."
"I don't want somebody like Audrey, Mal," Ben says, frustration seeping through his tone but they both know this is something she needs to hear. "I was with Audrey and she wasn't what I wanted. She's lovely and a great person when she wants to be but talking to her was like- like talking to a child. She was too perfect. She didn't argue with me or challenge me. She wouldn't tell me what I needed to hear. She'd never make a good queen. Not like-"
He cuts himself off, his jaw working and Mal barely realizes that she's clenching her dress in one fist, needing something to keep herself grounded. "Like what, Ben?"
"Like you, Mal. All my life I've been told that I'm going to be king. I was raised for it from the cradle and when I was old enough, my parents always told me that I should find love and be happy but also find somebody that I would trust Auradon with. And I know that I would trust you to be a queen for the people. I'm not asking you to marry me, Mal, but I want you to know that I'm serious about you. You're everything that I ever dreamed about as a kid."
Those words are heavy on Mal as she looks out at the lake. It's surprising to hear that Ben's imagined such a future between them when they haven't been together that long. But then, long courtships aren't typical, especially of royalty, even if it was something that his parents went through. She knows that Chad's parents for instance only knew each other a few hours before his father declared Cinderella the one he would marry.
Really, the idea of marrying Ben and being with him isn't the hard part. It's the idea of being queen. It's already been so hard for her and she knows that if the media knew that she was going to be queen then they would never leave her alone. But she's thought about what it would be like if she lost Ben. She's had months of worrying about it and why is she worrying now?
"I never thought to dream about you," Mal finally responds but she's smiling as she looks up at him. Ben looks relieved that she's not running scared and that's when it hits her that he's scared too. Why wouldn't he be? They're both young and she's given him reason to not trust her. She reaches out, taking his hand and holding onto him. "But I think if I knew something like this existed it would be my dream."
Mal loves the way that Ben looks at her, emotion-filled eyes and almost always with a smile. He looks at her likes he loves her and trusts her. Mal's starting to see that he does. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable. I'm going to be more understanding about you being in Auradon."
"Ben, no. That's my fault," Mal says, the words catching in her throat because admitting responsibility like that isn't something that she does easily. But she can't stand the thought of him feeling guilty over it. "I did everything that I could to make you think that I was fitting in easily. I used magic to fit in."
"Then let's both wipe the slate clean with everything that's gone wrong. We're going to fight but we can talk about it. If you're having trouble, or I am, then we can talk to each other about it."
Mal nods, figuring that's as good of a compromise as any. It won't be easy but she's willing to try. "That sounds fair."
"Did I ever thank you, by the way, for rescuing me?" Ben asks, picking up one of the sandwiches, obviously prepared to turn the conversation in a more casual direction as he takes a large bite.
And Mal is grateful for it, grateful for this and for sandwiches and lemonade and cookies. She's grateful for having wonderful friends, old and new. She's grateful that she had chosen good and she's grateful that she had felt safe and confident enough to do it. "I don't know. You can thank me for making you your favorite food though. I worked hard over this."
Ben's laugh is contagious and laughter evolves into kissing. By the time they stop kissing and eat, the cookies are cold, but Ben still tells her they're the best cookies that he's ever had. And Mal believes him.
Evil lives on
Summary: Peter Pans daughter has lived in Auradon her whole life. Now she meets new kids. A ‘It’s Goin’ Down’ prequel
A/N: I hope you guys like it! It’s in OUaT version because more people voted for that (it actually won by one vote). I tried to include everything that happened in the movie so it’s kinds long but I hope you like it. Let me know what you think! <3
Once upon
a time, long, long ago...
well, more like 20 years ago...
Belle married her beast
in front of 6,000
of their closest
personal friends.
Yeah, so instead of a honeymoon,
beast united all of the kingdoms
and got himself elected king of
the United States of Auradon.
He rounded up all the
villains and sidekicks...
basically all the really
interesting people...
and he booted them off
to the isle of the lost
with a magical barrier
to keep them there.
Except for one…
Neverlands magic protected it from the magic the fairies used and so Peter Pan couldn’t be ‘locked up’ with the rest of the villains. But it couldn’t help stop Peter Pan from aging anymore and so here you were, the daughter of the only villain in Auradon and sister to the king. Your brother Rumple (also known as the Beast) tried to keep you as far from your father as possible, but with a kingdom to run and a son to take care of he didn’t succeed much. Not that you helped, you were your fathers’ daughter after all, causing trouble everywhere you went and if it wasn’t for your nephew Ben most of the other kids would have never allowed you to be near them.
When Ben made his royal proclamation, you were torn! Finally you would meet other villain kids like you, you knew you’d either get along better with them than you did with some of the kids in Auradon or you’d hate them. So here you were standing at Bens right side while Audrey was at his left. You smiled at them waiting for Ben to introduce everyone but Audrey interrupted him which caused you to roll your eyes. You watched as she interacted with the girl you assumed was Evie but you decided to step in.
“Audrey that’s like saying Snow White doesn’t have a royal status.” You defended the girl.
Audrey looked at you with disdain as always. “What?” She asked quietly.
“The Evil Queen is a Queen because she married Snow Whites dad, dismissing her royal status means dismissing Snow Whites as well. The Evil Queen is a Queen dowager but still a Queen.” You explained, as Audrey looked at you shocked. You smirked, turning to the villain kids. “Hi, my name is Y/N, I’m Peter Pans daughter,’ you saw their expressions chang, “this is Audrey, Auroras daughter and my nephew Ben. Welcome to Auradon!”
“Princess Audrey!” Audrey stepped in her fake excitement making you roll your eyes again. “His girlfriend, right Bennyboo?” She asked turning to Ben and it took all your will power not to gag.
You stepped back as Fairy Godmother talked to them, inspecting them. You could tell that Mal was their leader, but they all seemed pretty cool. You continued to walk with the group until you were inside, making your way to your best friend Doug, who was coming down with the schedules.
Ben stepped closer to Doug putting an arm around him. “This is Doug, he and Y/N are gonna help you with the class schedules and show you the rest of the dorms. I’ll see you later, okay? And if there’s anything you need feel free to—”
“Ask Doug and Y/N” Audrey cut in, causing you to roll your eyes again. You swore that girl would make you go blind one day. Her and Mal faked laughed before Audrey drugged Ben away leaving you and Doug alone.
Doug introduced himself but you saw how he got distracted by Evie so you stepped in ones again. “So about your classes, we put in the requirements already-” Mal came to stand behind you “history of woodsmen and pirates, safety rules for the internet and remedial goodness 101.”
Mal scoffed, “Let me guess. New class?”
“No actually. I was required to take it too.” You replied with a smirk. “Just a tip, pick the answer that sounds the most boring.” You whispered to Mal.
She smiled at you and turned to the rest. “Come on guys, let’s go find our dorms.”
That night you were in the gardens practicing when you saw Mal, Evie, Jay and Carlos sneak out. Intrigued you decided to follow them, you didn’t expect they would go straight for the Wand. You suspected they had some sort of plan to free their parents, your father had taught you to expect everything from other villains but for them to go straight for it was quite bold. You returned to your personal dorm lost in thought. Should you help them? Should you stop them? Should you tell someone? Thoughts run through your head and you tried to imagine what would happen in each scenario. You weren’t going to say anything to anyone for sure, not even Ben or your father. You couldn’t see a way of stopping them so helping them it was, but helping them do what? You could see 3 possible outcomes, one was for you to help them with whatever plan they and their parents had which would most likely be world domination by the villains, the other was helping them but getting the wand for you father to do as he pleased. And last but not least, you could take the wand for yourself and do whatever you wanted. It would not be an easy decision. You loved and hated Auradon at the same time, it had been your home and Ben was more like a brother to you than a nephew, but you hated how people looked at you, you hated how some of the parents hadn’t wanted you to go to school with their kids and how those kids stayed away from you even when you were trying to be nice. Sure you weren’t the most well behaved girl in the land but your pranks were always harmless. Could you start hurting them now?
The next time you saw the VKs you were coming back from the field with Ben, Audrey glued to his side and Chad glued to hers, as always. You shook your head as Chad complained, “You’re just saying that because Jay is better than you at Tourney.” You snickered, turning away from them to follow Evie, who’d just left Mal. You greeted the purpled haired girl as you passed by. Speeding up a little you finally caught up to Evie, linking your arms.
“You’re going to Chemistry, right?” You asked, already knowing the answer.
“Yeah!” She smiled, “I really like your outfit by the way!”
You looked down at your clothes. You were wearing a grey tank top with dark grey skinny jeans and brown riding boots, but the focus on your outfit was your green leather jacket, you always wore something green, a weird way to honor your father. Your style was simple and casual yet so different from the other girls in Auradon who all wore pastel colors. You smiled at Evie, remembering what you wanted to talk to her about. “Thank you! Actually, that’s what I wanted to talk to you about. A little birdy told me that you are a fashion expert on the island,” she blushed slightly, “Ben’s coronation is coming up and I need a dress, I was hoping you could help? The royal dressmaker keeps trying to make my dress blue even after the countless times I told her I want it green. I’m sure you’ll do an amazing job and of course I’ll pay you!” It wasn’t the best excuse to get close to them but you knew it would work.
Her face lit up and she nodded. “Of course!”
You smiled at her, “great! I’ll swing by your dorm later so we can start talking.” The two of you had reached the classroom and you led her to the sit next to Doug before sitting down yourself.
“Hello nephew!” You beamed at Ben as you fell into step with him.
He groaned but smiled at you. “I’m older than you.”
You laughed at his response. “You say that every time, doesn’t change the fact that you’re my nephew! Whatcha doin’?”
He rolled his eyes but was quick to respond. “Just going to see if Mal and the rest need anything.”
You stopped walking and smirked, this was perfect. “I’ll leave you to it!” You fake curtsey and turned to leave, his laugh following you down the hall. You were lucky Ben was used to your cryptic behavior or he wouldn’t have let you go. Once you were outside you took off your necklace, sprinkling some of the pixie dust hidden inside it on you.
This is so creepy. You thought floating outside of Mal and Evies room, eavesdropping on their conversation. You heard the door close and Mals voice saying “I think it’s time Bennyboo got himself a new girlfriend. And I need a love spell.”
You suppressed a laugh and landed gracefully. This was definitely too perfect!
“So, you spelled my nephew.” You called, coming out of your hiding spot. Mal jumped in surprise turning to you.
“I’m- I can explain myself.” She panicked, looking around to make sure you were alone. You’d followed her after Ben had made a fool of himself in front of the whole school, ready to confront her.
You waived her off. “Don’t bother. I know everything, pretty bold move you made going after the wand on your first night here, I’m impressed! So impressed I actually want in”
She looked confused, “Why should we trust you.”
“You forget who my father is.” You simply replied.
“I remember who your brother is.” She retorted.
You sighed looking away, you knew this would be a problem. “Look I…like my brother but he’s an idiot. He gave up being ‘the dark one’ for love, true love is great and all but come on, he gave up all that magic and power and for what?” She still looked reluctant so you continued. “Look if we get the wand, we break the barrier and leave the rest to our parents, it’s a win for both of us.”
“I know what my mom and I will do, what will your dad do? What will you do?” She asked.
“Dad will probably restore Neverlands magic, go back to being young forever, and, as for me” you smirked “well the world will need another ‘dark one’.” You lied with ease. That was the plan if you failed to get the wand for yourself, but she didn’t need to know that.
Mal finally smiled. “You’re in.”
After a few days you all gathered in the boys’ room, no one seemed surprised you were there so you assumed Mal had filled them in on your conversation. Going over the plan you all understood what you had to do. “I’ll get the pixie dust, we’ll fly out to the limo in no time.” They all nodded. You noticed they all seemed reluctant to carry on with the plan and you could see why. They had all found something in Auradon they didn’t have before, you understood that. Your dad wasn’t the best, still obsessed with staying young, trying to find new ways to do so. Your brother didn’t really care about you, still bitter Pan had abandoned him. If it wasn’t for Ben your life would have been very different.
After everything was said and done you waited for Mal outside. You gave her a sad smile. “I’ll take care of him…after, you know that right?” She nodded, turning away and leaving for the kitchen.
You were standing under a tree fiddling with the green dress you were required to wear when Peter Pan approached you. “I know that look! You’re planning something!” was the first thing he said.
You scoffed rolling your eyes at him. “Hello to you too father. Yes, I’m good! No, I can’t believe it’s been 3 months either, yes, I haven’t grown at all. School is going great thanks for asking. What about you? How is Neverland?”
He mimicked your reaction, smirking a little at the similarities. “You know I don’t like it when you call me father. And you’re changing the subject. Four villain kids are in Auradon and they’re definitely planning something.”
You looked to were Ben was introducing Mal to Belle and Rumple, smirking at their reactions. “They’re playing the long game. Maleficents’ daughter is now Bens girlfriend, she’s basically convinced him she’s his true love. She’s gonna convince him to bring down the barrier.” You lied easily.
Your fath-Peter looked confused for a moment. “What do we get from that?”
You looked at him again. “Once the villains are free there will be chaos, we get the Wand and restore Neverlands magic. Rumple won’t be a problem and Ben-“
“I’ll deal with Ben.” He cut you off. You narrowed your eyes, not sure what that meant. You vaguely remembered seeing a picture of Ben in your dads old stuff.
You sighed pushing yourself from the tree. “Bye dad!” You said walking away from him, smiling innocently. You searched for the VKs and found them basically being yelled at by Chad, as Audrey and her grandmother stood behind him. Once you got closer, Chad turned to you. “And you,” he pointed “you’ve been ruining our lives since the day you were born, running around playing pranks on us. Your father was harmless after growing up, but you, we should have put you in the Isle.”
You stood frozen, not registering what was happening around you until Carlos pulled you with them. Next thing you knew you were sitting next to Mal at one of the picnic tables as you heard Jane and Audrey behind you.
“How long do they think that’s gonna last? Mal is just the bad girl infatuation, and he has to tolerate Y/N because she’s his aunt.” Audrey said, running a hand over your shoulder.
“Yeah, I mean, he’s never gonna make a villain a queen.” Jane continued, leaning closer to Mal.
As Mal began to break the spell for Janes hair, you disappeared from your sit and appeared in front of Audrey. Everyone screamed both at Janes hair and at the sight of you teleporting, no one knew you had magic as it was never as strong as it was in Neverland, but you had been practicing and you were so angry in that moment you felt it coursing through your veins.
“There’s a lot more where that came from.” Mal said.
Audrey looked at you and Mal, fear in her eyes but she was trying to be brave. “Excuse me who do you think you are?”
You smirked, raising your eyebrows. “Do we look like we’re kidding? You should know better Audrey!”
You heard Mal starting to go through the spell book threateningly and everyone started running. Turning around you smiled. “I’m really looking forward to tomorrow!”
Mal smiled back at you. “Let’s grab that wand and blow this popsicle stand.”
When Coronation came the next day, you were nervous once again. After everything that had happened the day before, you had time to relax and think everything through. You were still hurt by what Chad had said but you didn’t want to be the cause of his suffering either. You had to make sure Mal wouldn’t get the wand.
As a family member, you stood next to Mal at the front row, unlike your father who was seated in one of the balconies as far away from the wand as possible. You saw him staring at you but tried to ignore it. When Fairy Godmother took out the wand you looked at Mal, she looked hesitant so you took her hand, giving it a light squeeze. You both watched as Ben swore rule justly and Fairy Godmother begin to bless him when Jane of all people grabbed the wand and started to swing it aimlessly. Ben was quick to run to you and Mal trying to protect you but Mal run and grabbed the wand from Jane. Everyone gasped and Ben stepped forward but you stood between them facing Ben.
“Mal, give me the wand.” He pleaded.
“Stand back.” Was all Mal said.
Evie, Carlos and Jay burst through the doors, running to you standing behind Mal. You turned to look at your father as Ben tried to reason with them, he was smiling motioning for you to grab the wand. You turned to Mal who seemed like she was going to cry, “We have no choice, Ben. Our parents-“
“Our parents made their choice. Now it’s time to make ours.” You cut her off “I know what I said Mal but, I don’t want to be my dad, I want to be good. I know we can be good!”
“You are good!” Ben stepped in.
“How do you know that?” Mal shouted.
“Because I’m listening to my heart.” He shouted back.
As Mal turned to talk to the rest you stepped closer to Ben hugging him, letting him go only when you heard Mal say how happy he makes her but he still had one arm wrapped around you. “Your parents can’t reach you here.” You reassured Carlos, looking up to your own father.
You all hugged smiling when you heard an explosion as Maleficent appeared out of green smoke. Ben run to protect his mother but you stood with the others. When Maleficent froze everyone you were surprised the spell hadn’t worked on you but you stood your ground, and when Mal took the wand from her mother you smiled. The minutes that followed were a blur, as Jay tried to grab the scepter but Maleficent started chasing him. You threw him your necklace, glad you had thought to tell them about it, and he opened it starting to float in the air landing behind you. Mal stood in front of you all protecting you from her mother.
After it was all over and everyone was unfrozen your father came to you. “I’m disappointed, you gave up all that power. All that magic and for what? You’re just like your brother.”
“No father, I’m who you could have been if you had chosen good.” You said, turning around and going to hug your friends, ready to party.
Frozen the Musical - My Act One Thoughts
Hi friends! So... here we go! I saw Frozen twice while I was in Denver - once on August 18th and once on August 19th. A few things you should probably know before we delve into all my thoughts: 1. I’ve been a musical theatre nerd for most of my life. I went to a performing arts high school for musical theatre, and majored in theatre arts administration in college. 2. I am also a Disney nerd - always have been and always will be. I did the DCP in Walt Disney World and absolutely adored it. 3. Frozen has been my absolute favorite movie in the entire world since I first saw it back in 2013. I’ve made very good friends with Anna at all kinds of local parties and gatherings, run Frozen camps, and more. So... we can imagine how COMPLETELY ELATED I was when they announced they were creating Frozen on Broadway. Which leads me to point 4... Caissie Levy. I saw Caissie in Ghost back in 2012 and was ASTOUNDED by the sheer talent I was witnessing. Caissie has without a doubt become my absolute favorite performer, but more than that, she’s become an incredible mentor. So when I found out she was going to be LEADING this show, I MIGHT have lost my shit just a little bit (read: a lot).
With all that said... I hope that makes it clear that I know my way around good theatre, but I also have some implicit bias. I will try my best to stay as objective as I possibly can (which will probably be not at all tbh) while also fangirling my heart out.
Now. Let’s talk Frozen the Musical! Prepare for a novel.
- Preshow. They have some really cool sound effects and a projection of the Northern Lights that move around. It’s really pretty, and helps to put you in that mystical setting.
- The show opens with the newly introduced Hidden Folk. Let’s talk about them for a hot second. I get why they moved away from the trolls - having seen the stage show at the Hyperion out in Disneyland, the trolls would have been too campy and weird for what they’re trying to do with this show. I love the concept - the traditional Norwegian Huldufolk are the perfect fill in. The execution, IMO, needs some work. Crystal necklaces that light up just like in the movie? Super cool. Glowing eyes in the pitch black? REALLY cool. Long, swingy tails that make them look like non-blue Na’vi from Avatar? Not so much.
- Hearing Vuelie in person with that incredible ensemble was enough on its own to basically send me into a coma.
- THE YOUNGINS. Oh my LORD. They are so ridiculously good - especially the Young Annas, Audrey and Mattea. Their comedic timing is so good... you really can’t help but laugh every time they speak (”like run naked in the breeze!” I died).
- “Anna and Elsa” is adorable and just introduces us to the sisters. They also worked in a chunk of the cut song from the movie “We Know Better”, which was perfect and made me extraordinarily happy.
- “A Little Bit of You” is so stinking cute. And then Elsa hits Anna and your heart hurts. So thanks for that, Lopez crew (I’ll be saying that a lot tbh).
- The scene where the Queen summons the hidden folk is one that I would not be surprised to be tweaked. She started chanting and people started giggling (because tbh it is a little strange - it sounds incredibly dramatic), which is definitely not what you want happening there.
- Elsa asks Pabbie to remove her magic altogether because she’s afraid of what she’ll do, which just hurts my heart. He asks her to close her eyes and tell him what she sees, and it’s basically a premonition of the coronation - she sees a monster. Tears.
- Elsa is also the one who basically says “keep Anna away from me while I figure this magic thing out,” which is also devastating because that adds another layer of her guilt to what we knew from the movie.
- Another change from the movie - the girls are still their young selves when their parents die at sea. OUCH. I think it’s more effective, honestly.
- Caissie got entrance applause and that was the first time I cried. #proudmama
- Let’s take a moment to talk about PATTI FREAKING MURIN. I’m not going to lie to you - I was really worried about what they were doing with her in all the promotional stuff we saw, but I had no reason to be. Patti is the perfect Anna. She is adorkable, silly, fun loving, and tender and vulnerable when she needs to be. Anna is undoubtedly my favorite princess... Patti lives up to it.
- There are a few lyric tweaks in “For The First Time In Forever” to go with the action on stage - i.e. there are not 8,000 salad plates, so it wouldn’t make sense to sing about them.
- The scepter and orb glow at Elsa’s touch and it’s REALLY cool.
- The moment when they opened the gates and the whole ensemble spilled in... the second time I cried. It was so epic and just a beautiful, beautiful moment. All those voices harmonizing... it was overwhelming.
- Sven got entrance applause. I’m still trying to figure out how he’s maneuvered?! Literally the most lifelike reindeer puppet you could imagine.
- Obviously we have no horses on stage, so Anna and Hans bump into each other and fall into Kristoff’s ice cart, which is a nice touch.
- Anna makes an heir and spare joke - another reference to a cut song from the movie (my favorite one, so I was thrilled).
- John Riddle as Hans... he’s SPECTACULAR. He’s not a ginger, but I guess I’ll forgive him because he is incredibly good looking and SO charming. And that voice! He makes you fall in love with him. Which makes you hate him even more later on.
- Queen Anointed is GORGEOUS in every sense. There’s a little section of choreography as the church bells ring that was very, very cool - the ensemble moves in and out of line with each chime. Hard to explain, but visually gorgeous.
- As the ensemble is singing, Elsa is basically silhouetted upstage while the priest puts on her cape and they walk the orb and scepter in. The lighting here just made me melt.
- Dangerous to Dream. There’s already been some pretty good discussion about this (see @frozenartscapes and @not-rotting for that fun), but oh MAN. After the first verse, Anna runs in and kneels downstage with her hands over her heart and Elsa sings directly at her. UGH. After she’s crowned, she observes the festivities and sings the rest of the song as Anna is shown enjoying it - dancing, being lifted up on a chair, etc. All while Elsa just looks on longingly. My heart.
- Robert Creighton as the Duke is the wonderful blend of funny, creepy (”Let me tame you with my tango” and “you’ll be looking for a king, no doubt” ugh), and dastardly that the role demands.
- The camaraderie between the sisters as Anna disses the Duke is perfection.
- Love is an Open Door. WHERE DO I START. Take the movie and ramp it up by about 800%. Sexual tension is not off limits here. Anna runs her hands over Hans’s chest, Hans grabs Anna’s butt, there’s some panting, there’s a very cute dance break where he has her leg up by her face in a split and she’s like “ow ow ow ow ow” and then she somehow ends up on the ground beneath him... and then as the song ends, he buries his face in her chest and then they proceed to make out for at LEAST 30 seconds as all the coronation-goers filter in. It is hilarious, and on the second night recording, you can literally hear me go “I thought this was a family show!” lmao.
- Elsa freezing the ballroom - the spikes shoot out of the wall and I was legitimately concerned someone was going to be impaled on stage. It’s so organic and realistic!
- After Elsa runs out of the ballroom, you see the various townspeople as they run to safety... then Elsa stumbles forward, catches herself on the proscenium of the stage, and then the proscenium freezes in what was my first “WTF IS HAPPENING” moment of the show. The projections there... omg. Otherworldly.
- Ah, and now I get to talk about Jelani as Kristoff. GUYS. He’s SO GOOD. His voice is divine. He is SO PERFECTLY SASSY, but like Patti, when he’s a softie, he just melts your heart. He and Patti play so well off of each other - their witty banter is everything you’d hope and more. Kristanna shippers, rest assured, your hearts will flutter.
- I mentioned in a previous post that right before “What Do You Know About Love”, Kristoff literally rips off Anna’s dress before she changes into Kristoff’s clothes and that was the moment I died. My shipper heart.
- Speaking of... “What Do You Know About Love”. WE FINALLY HAVE A KRISTANNA DUET, Y’ALL. And it was worth the wait. It’s 5 minutes of stellar witty banter. God bless. The music is also CATCHY AF.
- The bridge! It’s very, very cool. One of my favorite scenic elements in the show.
- “You’ve got some guts.” “You’ve got some... brains.” I’ll leave it at that.
- When Olaf makes his grand entrance, you hear his voice all around the theater. Which caused absolutely everyone to collectively lose their shit while turning around in their seats. Hilarity.
- The Olaf puppet, for anyone who hasn’t seen yet, is done very similarly to Timon from The Lion King. Anytime Greg moves his feet, Olaf moves. Same with the hands.
- Greg as Olaf. There were moments I had to remind myself that Greg did NOT, in fact, voice Olaf in the movie. He’s that spot-on, but of course with his own flair. 12/10 casting.
- “In Summer”. It’s just as ridiculous as you might imagine, though not as campy as it is in DCA with the random backup dancers in flippers and scuba gear. There’s just random birds flying in on a stick instead.
- “If there’s one thing Arendelle can handle, it’s snow.” - Anna, cut immediately to “I CAN’T HANDLE ALL OF THIS SNOW!” - The Duke.
- “Hans of the Southern Isles (Reprise)” - aka the “I’m Hans and I’m gonna manipulate the entire town into believing I’m the greatest thing since sliced bread but HEY I’m humble no big deal” song.
- The moment you’ve all been waiting for (along with literally everyone in the theatre who audibly squealed at the first notes)... “Let It Go”. Aka the moment I officially LOST. MY. SHIT. I waited to talk about Caissie until this moment because this is the first time we get to see her in all her belty, sparkly glory. She. Is. Perfection. She looks the part, she acts the part, she sings the SHIT out of it.
- I will say - the song is back in its intended key, which means it’s a half step lower than we hear in the movie (cut to a clip of Idina being like “but what if I sing it a half step up just this once?” and then hating her life as every child on the planet began to sing the song). But that makes it no less belty and beautiful. Rather than just letting that last note kind of fade like you hear on the soundtrack, Caissie takes it up to the high heavens and the sky opens up and you melt into a puddle on the floor. Wait... that was me. Definitely me.
- Scenically, I wanted a little bit more. The projections are cool, and the massive wall of Swarovski crystals that dropped from the ceiling was sparkly enough to blind me. But other than that, the stage felt a bit empty. The rumor is that they have another plan for Broadway - which makes sense since they’re in a temporary home and it wouldn’t make sense to build any really massive set pieces until they’re in a place where they can do that. They know they could pretty much put Caissie in a trash bag, throw her on stage to sing this song, and the crowd would still lose their minds. Save the magic for the big guns. At least, I hope that’s what’s going to happen!
- The dress change. There was a clip floating around from the show Friday night, and the timing of the flash was off, so it’s unfortunate that’s the one that got passed around (even though it’s still freaking incredible!) because you can kind of see the magic. Saturday night, you couldn’t see a thing and LORDY BE. It is truly magical. And the dress! It’s STUNNING. I sobbed both nights. Like... ugly crying, heavy sobbing.
And with that... I went into the lobby going “I’M GONNA PASS OUT MOM, I SWEAR. I’M GONNA PASS OUT MY FACE IS TINGLY I’M GONNA PASS OUT” because I was so overwhelmed and it was intermission.
Thanks for tuning in for Act 1... Act 2 to come later!
How about the Aks fighting styles? You know, if they are able to?
Theycan fight, but not nearly as well as the VK’s can. In a clash inAuradon, the combatants respect things like fair fighting, don’tintend to seriously injure their opponents if possible, and don’tkick them while they’re down.
Meanwhile, the VK’s will take advantage of everything they canand then some. It’s a huge part of why my OC Dog in “Reunions”utterly decimates most everyone he fights with; his incredible speedand strength, quick thinking, and instinctive understanding ofweaknesses and vulnerabilities in his enemies’ defenses aside, he’sunrepentant in using every single advantage and opportunity as theypresent themselves.
Well, that, and both your average Islander Henchman and AuradonRoyal Guard is not a very good fighter to begin with...
Anyway:
Ben
Closest Fighting Style: Every Medieval Western European Combat Style With Every Weapon You Can Imagine, plus Wrestling (Not professional)
Weapon/s of Choice: Every Medieval Western European Weapon You Can Imagine, Himself
Being the most powerful monarch in the land, and at real risk ofbeing targeted or even killed by both escaped Villains and Goodpeople falling into temptation, Ben has been schooled in severaldifferent types of combat, mixing up the usual sport fencing withactual, brutal swordplay, horse riding with jousting and archery, wrestling with the intent to kill or render your opponentunconscious, well past the point when they cry “Uncle!” and many, many, many other combat styles that are all united in the fact that their
Unlike Chad, he’s not the most popular participant when it comesto duels or tournaments because he lacks the flair, the showmanship,and the willingness to show off, but in an actual fight, Ben will winout, as he’s one of the most aggressive, relentless, anddangerously cunning opponents you will ever meet.
Thanks to a mixture of influences, training, and genetics fromBeast (strength and determination), Belle (intelligence, patience,and cleverness), and Lumiere (lessons in actual “fight for yourlife” combat and how to make the best of a terrible situation,thanks to his checkered, adventurous, and not entirely legalyouth), he is one of the most dangerous AK’s alongside Lonnie.
Be very thankful he only uses violence as an absolute lastresort.
Lonnie
Closest Fighting Style: VariousEastern Martial Arts, Armed and Unarmed
Weapon/s of Choice: Swords, Staves, Bows and Arrows,Explosives, and Herself
Being the daughter of China’s greatest War Hero and an armycaptain infamous for being able to whip up even the most incompetentand hopeless recruits into a crack-fighting force, it was all butinevitable that Lonnie would end up being one hell of a fighter,combining both her own athletic skill and her mother’s penchant forclever solutions to seemingly impossible problems.
She didn’t go through the same hellish training sequence asShang’s famous company did, seeing as she was both a kid, and theHuns were all on the Isle or living in Faraway or the Borderlands,but these days she can run through the whole course without aproblem, though it is helped by the fact that she has modernequipment, YouTube videos, and much better nutrition and trainingadvice than any of them ever had.
She rarely uses her martial prowess to fight—in fact, she tendsto just use it as a form of exercise or combine it with her hip hopdancing—but if ever there is someone (Evil!) that needs to bekilled with a sword, bow and arrow, or a staff; beaten to a pulp withher bare hands; or blown up with fireworks or actual artillery,she’ll happily step up and do wonderfully at it.
On a side note, she’s also great with clever, creative,unexpected infiltration into places that need breaking into.
Doug
Closest Fighting Style: Judo
Weapon/s of Choice: Himself
The Dwarven fighting style is very simple: use theirincredible strength/size ratio to subdue their off-guard opponentsbefore they realize they are a threat, smash their heads and bodiesin with their mining tools, or use their instinctive knowledge ofleverage, pressure points, and proper application of force to crackbones instead of ore veins.
Being that Doug himself is an outlier among dwarves, anintellectual who I assume only ever having held a pickaxe for photosand a brief stint attempting mining, does not follow this rule.
Instead, he subscribes to Judo, because it’s primarily forself-defense; it’s a matter of balance, physics, and using youropponent’s size and streng against them; and I t synergizes verywell with his Dwarven constitution of “much in little,” and he isparticularly well-suited for throwing people and knocking themoff-balance as he’s quite stable and difficult to tip over
He’s not the BEST at it as a full-on fight requires both thewill to fight, and a street brawl is a lot more uncontrolledand wild than a sparring match, but he’s not entirelydefenseless.
Ally
Closest Fighting Style: Various, primarily Swordplay
Weapon/s of Choice: Swords, though croquet mallets andother mundane objects work just fine
I would assume that Ally has trained extensively with all the cardsoldiers in the art of swordplay, though this being Wonderland, it’sPLENTY different from anything you might imagine from Auradon, and itshows if she actually has to fight.
Like CJ, she’s dangerous mainly because of her unpredictabilityand acrobatics, plus her use of her environment (hot tea to the faceis a great opener) with unusual tactics (if you could call itthat) to throw her opponents off-guard.
It’s REALLY hard to counter a strategy when there isn’t one inthe first place, or they’re just making it up entirely as they goalong.
Even if she doesn’t have a sword or any traditional weapons,she’s still capable of defending herself as Wonderland is a weird,wonderful, and wild place where you never know what toexpect, so you better be able to know many, many, manydifferent ways to defend yourself.
Jordan
Closest Fighting Style: Capoeira
Weapon/s of Choice: Herself
Jordan is no stranger to martial arts and unarmed self-defenseseeing as Eden and Genie had put it on their “Freedom List,” andold Agrabah was rife with dangers and perils that made knowing how toprotect yourself with no weapons on-hand was a very helpful skillindeed.
Seeing as she’s immortal and it’s hard to actually seriouslyinjure her, she just picked whatever martial art appealed to her themost, and I’d imagine Capoeira would be it, because of its focus onrhythmic movements, playfulness and style, and deception and catchingyour opponent off-guard appeals to her greatly.
Her fighting was often been compared to dancing or toying with heropponents, and she is doing just that; she needn’t worry aboutanything more serious than ruining her clothes, as her physical formcan be easily regenerated or changed, and cosmetic damage magickedaway.
The only real threat to her would be anti-Fae/magic weapons andtactics, but those are a different story altogether.
Chad
Closest Fighting Style: Fencing, Archery, Jousting
Weapon/s of Choice: Swords, Bows and Arrows, Lances
As a Charming and a Prince, Chad has been trained in all the usualschools of swordplay, horseback riding, jousting, fencing, archery,and all the things young royals are trained in to prepare them foreventually going to war with enemies and neighbouring countries, orimpressing their potential future wives at all the annualtournaments.
Sad to say, Chad is really more flair than substance, knowingflashy moves and tactics that certainly get applause from the crowdbut open you up so much that someone who DOES intend to hurt you canand will with ease. His trainers have continually been trying todrill it out of him, but unfortunately, Chad believes more in theadoration of a swooning crowd than the admonitions of people thatactually know how to survive a real fight, than a duelwith rules and referees.
When push comes to shove, I’d assume that Chad initiallyfalters, fails every fight he gets into, and nearly gets himselfkilled if the others aren’t around. He would wisen up quickly afterthat (assuming he survives and doesn’t suffer grievous injurythat’d prevent him from ever fighting again), and would become adecent enough combatant, if not nearly as competent as either Lonnieor Ben.
Decades of showing off is hard to unlearn, especially when thereare no rules to engagement and referees.
Jane
Closest Fighting Style: Various, primarily Judo and KravMaga
Weapon/s of Choice: Whatever is at hand
Because Jane is incapable of forgetting, will live forever, is amagical creature for whom her humanoid form is a conscious choice,and doesn’t have the opportunity to Bibbidy-Bobbidi-Boo heraggressors into the hospital, Fairy Godmother has enrolled her or shehas trained herself in pretty much EVERY martial arts and combatschool under the sun.
She hasn’t gotten very far with any of them for a variety ofreasons, but Krav Maga and Judo have stuck, the former for itsemphasis on “spotting trouble before it happens, and getting outfast when it does,” and the latter because a tiny girl like herbodily throwing someone several times her size into the cold, hardpavement is a fantastic distraction.
She’s the last to jump to action, and certainly not the bestally in an all-out-brawl, but she is the best canary in the coal mineas she is hyperaware of potential danger, and always has all mannerof contingency plans and escape routes already thought up in herhead.
Audrey
Closest Fighting Style: None
Weapon/s of Choice: Knives and small, sharp objects
Like Evie, Audrey primarily uses bladed weapons as a deterrent ora last resort weapon for distracting or injuring an opponent enoughto dissuade them from attacking. Like Mal, she has no qualms aboutgoing for the most vulnerable parts of the body, as if you make itthrough her guards or make it so that you ambush her when she’sthis vulnerable, she assumes you likely wouldn’t have much qualmsabout doing way worse things to her.
Unlike the both of them, however, she’s terrible at itfrom a lack of practice, having been defended by so many swooping into rescue her at the right moments, and just her general anxiety andpanic in the face of danger, or things just not going her way.
She knows the technique, she has been schooled, it’s just thatactually being in the thick of danger is SO much more different thanhaving an instructor that politely warns you about what exactlythey’re going to do.
"Imagine: you're about to finally get married to the woman you love but instead of being excited you're panicking to your best man"
Inspired by Sick of Losing Soulmates by Dodie
warnings: this was so gross and happy okay i barely ever do this anymore. also there is a lot of dialogue between other characters!
[i do not own the gif above!]
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
With your breath caught in your throat and the expensive material of your outfit clinging your back, your were hardly ready to just waltz out there. Ten minutes.
All you had was ten minutes to pull yourself together.
Your eyes were focused on the almost blinding white material of the tent you had gotten ready in. Brooke was staring at you and chewing on one of her manicured nails, even tugging her grey dress down as if she didn't know what to do with her hands. Audrey and you had decided to share bridesmaids, none specific to either of you as you loved all of them. But you did both have a best man to walk you down the isle. Neither of your father's were present, but that was okay. At least Audrey's father had let you eat dinner there once in a while. He was coming around you, Audrey had told you that she was never sure about anything with her father, but she did know he loved you both.
"Stavo will be back in a minute, he was just trying to find Noah to see how Audrey's doing." Brooke sounded slightly unsure and kissed your cheek quickly before running off, probably to find her on and off again boyfriend; your best friend. The funny thing about Stavo and Brooke was that they never seemed to realize how in love they were until they were apart.
One day they would figure it out; you were sure of it.
With Brooke off on a hunt for her boyfriend and Audrey and Noah getting ready not so far from you, you realized how quickly everything had happened. One day you had been pacing outside of a jewelry store and a month later you were bothering Foster.
Noah Foster. You chewed on your lip and let your mind drift to when you had spoken to Foster for the first time about marrying Audrey.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
"I have a ring. But you're her best friend, you've been there for everything with her. While you guys faced the murders I wasn't there for her. So I need your blessing, Foster."
"You make it sound like leaving was your choice. I was here because I had to be, Audrey and I have both told you that."
"I should have fought though. I shouldn't have let my father drag me away. He wasn't just worried that I would end up like my brother and he'd lose another kid. He was worried of being blamed for it. He was a coward. And I should have fought to stay."
"Y/N, what if you had of stayed and gotten hurt? What if you had been slaughtered like Will? Did you want to end up like your brother? Because you wouldn't be here today, shaking like I'm about to kick your puppy and asking me if you're allowed to marry Audrey. And just so you know, I've never been more excited for a wedding in my whole life."
"Thank you for being her friend, Foster. Sometimes I wonder if she even deserves a friend like you."
"She does. Well, now at least. She earned it. She just had to kidnap me once or twice and almost have me killed before she realized that."
"Right... Forgot about that actually. She's lucky to have us both I guess. And we're lucky to have her. I can't believe I'm going to finally ask her."
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Stack came bounding into the tent and almost had the whole thing crashing down before he steadied himself. You took one look at him and almost cried at the sight of your best friend and a freshly printed comic book in hand. Of course he had a graphic novel or comic with him, when did he not? But one look at the cover told you this was a special one.
"I had to unwrap a gift or two but I found something that will help you out I think. I just finished it last night. I think it's my best work yet."
His voice was soothing and slightly out of breath and you were reminded that Stavo was your Noah. He was the one that always had your back and knew how to help. Ironically, he was also the reason you had met Audrey. He'd warned you off her when you came back to Lakewood for your senior year of high school. Telling you that she wasn't a bad person but she wasn't "girlfriend material". But college came and everyone changed, leading to Stavo and Audrey becoming friends.
"You made me a comic book?" You voice wavered slightly and he seemed to beam at you, clearly pleased that you were no longer panicking.
He gestured for you to read it and you quickly opened the first page after smiling softly at the cover. It was a drawing of you in your wedding attire, holding Audrey's hand. You flipped through the pages and read a story about a disastrous wedding in which nothing was going as planned. Your character wound up running off with Stavo's character in tow and living in a a shack in the woods on the edge of Lakewood forever. Two spinsters making crafts and drawing graphic novels for the rest of their days.
"See? You have to get married today or you'll be stuck with me forever."
You began to laugh uncontrollably and Brooke had to carefully wipe tears from your eyes so your light amount of make up wouldn't smudge. This was why Stavo was your friend, he made you forget your insecurities and fears with a bunch of terrible jokes. He was also the most loyal person you had ever met.
"While that isn't the worst thing in the world, the only person I really want to be stuck with forever is Audrey," you said softly, grabbing Stavo's hand and squeezing tightly. He helped you stand up and stay steady before kissing your forehead. You could do this, especially with your best friend by your side. "Oh, did you ever get to Noah?"
Stavo tugged at the collar of his navy blue suit and looked away. "Yeah, he's just dealing with Audrey."
"Dealing with?" Suddenly you were feeling insanely nervous again, wondering if Audrey was planning on bolting. What if she wouldn't go through with it? Maybe you weren't the only one terrified.
"Relax, she's not going to run. She was freaking out about her hair and so Noah and I grabbed your presents to help distract you."
The wind started to pick up outside and you found yourself walking quicker but begging yourself to slow down. You were terrified of a million things in that moment. What if you went into the barn and Audrey didn't show up? What if the wedding was perfect and you somehow ruined it by stuttering or saying the wrong thing? The two of you were headed for the huge rustic barn that was designed for events like weddings. It was perfect for Audrey and you but suddenly it was looming and daunting all at once.
Stavo stopped walking and grabbed your shoulders, forcing you to meet his gaze. "You can do this. I know you, Y/N. This day has been fated since you and Audrey had that stupid argument about eighties romance movies at your first college party."
You giggled and bit your lip absentmindedly, remembering that dreadful party. Nothing stuck in your mind more than the end of your iconic 'fight'.
You had another argument prepared on how Say Anything was anything but tacky, your mouth open and your eyes holding a furious glint. Audrey had taken your hand, sending a sort of shock through your entire body. Your brow had been furrowed in confusion and Audrey had leaned in slowly, making it hard for you to continue breathing. "This party is pretty gay, any chance you want to get out of here?"
Stavo didn't notice your moment of reminiscing and continued his little speech. "If any couple is ever going to work out, it's you two. If you weren't ready, would you be here now? Look at Brooke and I; just because we aren't married doesn't mean we don't love each other. But if we were ready, we would be."
You felt your head moving up and down in a nod and tried to let his words sink in. He was right, if it wasn't supposed to happen, you wouldn't have let it. Some people spent their lives being married when it wasn't supposed to be, but you knew that you and Audrey would only do it if you meant it.
And you did.
You couldn't imagine a life without her curled up next to you, her bangs constantly covering her gorgeous eyes that seemed to do nothing but adore you and her hand clasped in your's. That was the kind of future you wanted.
All you had to do was take it.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
It was a completely unexplainable experience, watching her walk down the aisle towards you after you yourself had just come stumbling down it. She was far more graceful than you were, Noah's arm wrapped around hers and a goofy grin on his still-childish face. But even through the surprising grace, her entire body was illuminated with a halo of fear mixed with excitement. Any fear of her running away was dismissed as you watched her.
Her black suit was trimmed and fit perfectly on her body, hugging her curves like a glove and sending a small rush down your spine. Just because it wasn't the time didn't mean you wouldn't take a second to appreciate how gorgeous she was.
How had you ever gotten so lucky?
Your mind seemed to numb when she was finally right in front of you. It really did feel like just the two of you there at that moment, as if no one was watching the two of you as closely as they were. How was it possible that everything could melt away like that? All you could feel was a bundle of nerves in your stomach and the weight of Audrey's gaze.
For a moment everything was silent, the wedding officiate taking a moment to start the official wedding. In a moment you would be saying your vows and finally marrying the woman you loved more than anyone in the world.
But for a split second, you were just a stunning, but nervous, wreck of young adult, standing across from a girl and completely open to the future.
Audrey surprised you by taking both of your hands in hers and leaning in closely. It seemed like she was going in for a kiss, her lips parted, until she cracked a small smile. Her eyes were practically glowing and you swore that she had never looked happier. You worried about how you looked. Did you looked too nervous, too sweaty, too unsure?
"Hey, this wedding is pretty gay. Any chance you want to get out of here?" she whispered with a glint of amusement in her eyes.
You pursed your lips and did everything in your power not to laugh and break the silence in the barn. With close to hundreds of eyes on you, you weren't confident in your ability to recover from any embarrassment.
"Oh gosh, are they here for a gay wedding? What if they find out we're just here for the champagne?" you responded in a hushed voice. Audrey grinned and her hands gripped yours even tighter. She was stopping your hands from shaking and warming them at the same time, giving you something else to focus on. She knew you too well.
"I guess we'll have to be pretty convincing."
Before the wedding had even officially began, Audrey lips were against yours and the entire world was void of anything but the two of you. There was no one watching, no one waiting for declarations of love or perfect hallmark card material.
There was just the soft tug of her lips and a subtle taste of cherry candy and your favourite mint gum.
Reality came crashing back when she gently pulled away and you had never felt more ready for anything in your life. This was it. You were going to finally commit to someone for the rest of your life in front of everyone else the two of you loved and appreciated. It was thrilling and scary and beautiful all at once.
Your ears finally caught the joyful sound of clapping at the surprise kiss and before glancing at the crowd of friends and family, you leaned back into Audrey one more time.
"That kiss was pretty gay, think we might stay for a while?"
"Always," she whispered back.
Thievery and Mischief- (a descendants/marvel crossover)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/4806a259088904024a7701351496e072/a66d68a3695b5480-ad/s540x810/6a4d878466446678dfc4305817cf071b50bf6aff.jpg)
Ah, October. The best month of the year. Fall weather stars rolling in, the leaves start to change color, and Ben’s coronation is just on the weekend. Honestly, it’s also the worst day of the whole month too. Family Day. Where our parents come to visit us after their endeavors without us. For our parents, we decide to perform an acapella version of Be our Guest. Me, Lonnie, and of course Audrey, stand at the front to perform and Audrey whispers to Chad constantly.
“Hey, how's Jay?” Lonnie asks.
”I have no clue. He’s been pretty sad all day though. He was fine this morning though,” I say.
”You never told me what happened on your date,” Lonnie says cheekily.
Ben calls places and we get into formation.
”I’ll tell you later,” I say to her with a wink.
After we finish performing, I head over to my parents.
”Hi, ma. Hi, pa,” I greet with a soft smile.
My dad embraces me in a tight hug.
”You were a little sharp during the chorus,” Mom comments.
”Jaz, cut her some slack. She did wonderful,” My dad tells Mom.
She gives me a kiss on the cheek after I hug dad. Soon, Aziz appears.
”Hi guys, just had to take care of some tourney question from Eric,” Aziz says.
”Saw your guy’s win during homecoming. Who was that number 8 kid who got the assist?” Dad asks Aziz.
”That would happen to be my boyfriend,” I respond with a smile.
Mom and Dad’s eyes both change in shape.
”Boyfriend?” They question.
“Adri’s dating a VK,” Aziz says cheekily, wrapping an arm around my shoulder.
Mom’s eyes widen in surprise. Dad just smiles.
”And who are their parents?” Mom says, crossing their arms.
“Does it matter though?” Dad adds.
”Yeah, loosen up, ma,” Aziz says, as swaggeringly as Dad does.
Mom rolls her eyes and waits expectantly for my answer.
”Okay...he may or may not be...the son of Jafar,” I say quickly, stuttering along the way.
Mom’s face morphs into anger.
”What? Are you absolutely kidding me?” Mom exclaims.
”But he’s cool, mom,” Aziz adds.
”That's...concerning. But if Aziz thinks he’s okay, then I think we should try and...open up to the idea,” Dad says to mom.
“Uh, fine,” Mom says, rolling her eyes.
I try and find Jay. I spot him by Ben.
”Can I borrow him for a second?” I ask Ben.
Before he can respond, I take Jay’s arm anyway.
”What’s wrong?” Jay says, noticing my nervousness.
”Okay, my parents may or may not want to meet you?” I tell him.
His eyes widen nervously.
”Don’t you think it’s a little too soon for me to be meeting your parents?” Jay asks, scratching his neck nervously.
”Aziz just couldn’t keep his mouth shut,” I scoff.
Jay laughs and pecks my cheek.
”I would be honored to meet your parents. But do they...?” He assumes.
”Yeah,” I say softly.
We eventually walk over to my parents and Mom stares him up and down.
”Mom, Dad, this is my boyfriend, Jay,” I introduce.
”It’s a pleasure to meet you both,” Jay says with a smile.
”Nice play last week. The whole match had me on the edge of my seat!” Dad says, extending a hand.
”Thank you, sir,” Jay says shyly.
”Please, call me Al,” Dad tells him.
Jay then turns to Mom.
”And you must be the Sultana. I’ve heard a lot of things about you, your majesty,” Jay says, taking her hand a placing a kiss on it.
”Your quite the catch, aren’t you?” Mom says.
I chuckle softly and Jay winks in my direction.
”Thats actually the same thing your daughter said to me when I first met her, your majesty,” Jay recalls.
“Did you?” Mom says, looking to me with a raised brow.
”What? It was the only thing I thought of,” I say shyly.
Mom laughs and turns back to Jay.
”You know what they say, like mother, like daughter,” Mom adds.
”Jeez, mom,” I say in embarrassment.
”Well she does have a couple of interesting traits that I assume she’s gotten from the both of you,” Jay comments.
”Nah, I couldn’t even imagine myself doing the load of things she does in a day. Compared to when I was her age, I was such a loser,” Dad says.
”You were a street rat, dad,” Aziz adds.
”I learned valuable things though,” Dad comments.
”Like what, how to steal the hoped diamond?” I joke.
”How to steal ladies’ hearts, if you get what I mean,” Dad says with a wink.
”Honey!” Mom exclaims, nudging Dad’s arm.
”And it still took you forever to get married,” A voice says.
I look over my shoulder and see Uncle Genie alongside Jordan.
”Genie! Long time no see old friend,” Dad says, approaching Genie.
Jordan gives me a side hug.
”You taking care of my girl, Jay?” Jordan asks Jay.
”She’s taking care of herself just fine, Jordan, but sure I am,” Jay says.
”Good answer,” Mom comments, listening to our conversation.
Jay chuckles a little at Mom’s comment and turns to me.
”Your family’s pretty cool. I don’t get why you argue so much,” Jay whispers.
”It’s because Jaz never wants my boy to be right,” Genie says, slinging his arm around me and Jay’s shoulders.
”Hi, uncle Genie. This is-,” I start.
”The lucky man who stole my niece’s heart! Jordan told me all about you,” Genie says, patting Jay’s back.
I glare at Jordan.
”Of course she did,” I say through gritted teeth.
”What? You know I gossip a lot,” Jordan says.
”Why do you trust her again?” Aziz says, joining our conversation.
”Because I'm chill?” Jordan assumes.
From the corner of my eye, I see Dad and Genie talking to Jay. I can feel Jay’s presence start to get nervous. I slide away from my brother and my cousin.
”Hi, can you not try and intimidate the hell out of my boyfriend? Thank you, love you,” I say, taking Jay’s arm.
”How’d you know I was-?”
”Powers,” I say shortly.
Jay nods in realization.
Soon, Jay goes back with Ben to play Croquet and I try to distant myself from my family. I hear footsteps coming from behind me. I turn and see my dad.
”Hey, what’s wrong?” Dad asks, sitting beside me on the garden’s bench.
”What did you tell Jay?” I ask.
Dad chuckles softly.
”I just gave them the whole protective dad thing,” Dad says.
I pinch the bridge of my nose softly.
”God, you guys never fail to embarrass me,” I say.
”Is that what you think of us?” Dad asks concerningly.
”Kind of,” I say shyly.
Dad holds out his hand for me to take.
I take his hand and he holds it.
”I know we’re not perfect but you’re the only daughter we have. Your mom might be rash sometimes but she’s always trying to help you. And I may joke around sometimes-“
”Sometimes?” I question.
”Okay, that might be an understatement but I seriously believe that if you're happy with Jay, it doesn’t matter if he’s from the Isle or if he is Jafar’s son. I was from the streets and your mother was royalty, and I still managed to capture her heart,” Dad says.
I lay my head on his shoulder.
”Why can’t mom be more like you?” I ask.
”Me and your mom both love in different ways, honey. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t care about you or doesn’t love you any less,” Dad assures.
”Thanks, dad. For everything,” I say sweetly.
I pick my head off his shoulder and he kissed my forehead.
“Go and talk to your friends or something, enjoy your day off,” Dad says with a smile.
I hug Dad briefly and walk off into the croquet court.
I walk over to Lonnie.
”Let me guess. Your family gave the old familiar awkward conversation to Jay?” Lonnie asks.
”This was the worst though. Even if he did push through it,” I say.
Lonnie raises a surprised brow.
”Really? You know, I think your dad might actually like him a lot. Even if your mom might freak the hell out,” Lonnie comments.
”She already did,” I add.
Lonnie and I both laugh.
”So, tell me about your date,” Lonnie reminds me.
I smile, remembering the events.
”Well, he first took me on a motorcycle ride through the city. Then, we stopped by the enchanted lake and he covered the green house with violets and gifted me a instrumental track he made for a song I wrote him,” I say.
”Aww, that’s beautiful. But how’d he know you liked Violets?” Lonnie asks.
”Aziz,” I say shortly, rolling my eyes:
”That boy is always talking to Jay now. About Tourney, video games and you,” Lonnie says.
”Oh really?” I ask.
”Every first period in Algebra. Jay never shuts up about you,” Lonnie adds.
I smile softly at the thought.
“After he gave me the song, we talked a little bit,” I say.
”About what?” Lonnie asks.
”Everything. How we grew up, our families, and he told me how he felt about me and asked me to be his,” I say.
”That’s when he asked you? Damn, took him long enough,” Lonnie says.
”Why do you say that?” I ask.
”He had an obvious crush on you so he asked everyone what he should do for his date,” Lonnie says.
”He asked you?” I assume.
”He did. I mean, I am your best friend. Now, continue,” Lonnie says.
”Okay, we went swimming afterward. He had bought me this cute swimsuit for me to wear and can I just say...he’s hot as hell,” I say.
”Is he?” Lonnie asks.
”He’s probably fitter than Herkie if I’m honest,” I comment.
”But he’s a god?!” Lonnie exclaims.
”Anyways, we went swimming and he took me to this beautiful waterfall. When the sun hit it, the color of the water would change. Underneath it, there was little space to sit with a beautiful pearl stuck in the walls. There he told me how he managed to plan the date and he...noticed my scars. I told him about what happened during fencing with Aziz and he...kissed every single one,” I say shyly.
”Oh shit. Did he get intimate?” Lonnie asks.
”He then asked me about my stretch marks and my birthmarks. And he kissed those too. But with my birthmarks, he told me he believed the past life fable and told me he wanted to be my partner. Then...he kissed me,” I say.
”No fucking way. You guys made out under a waterfall? No wonder why you had a missing spot when you covered your hickeys up,” Lonnie comments.
”Are you kidding me?” I say.
Lonnie laughs and I blush in embarrassment.
”I didn’t just have them on my neck you know,” I mutter.
Lonnie’s eyes widen.
”Tell me everything,” Lonnie orders.
”After we finished making out, the sun started to set and we watched the waterfall reflect the sun. We packed everything up, got dry and went back to the dorms. When we got there, he said good night and I thought that was it...but something told me to go after him. So I did. And I kissed him again but this time it was so much rougher. He pinned me against the wall and made out with me and then we went to my room and...he officially took my v-card,”I say.
”Holy shit! I knew it, no wonder why the Tourney team hyped him up at lunch the next day,” Lonnie says.
We both laugh.
Suddenly, people start gathering around our area.
”Whats going on?” Lonnie asks.
I see Queen Leah with Mal next to her.
Shit.
I walk over to the scene to try and get a hold of what’s going on.
”Maleficent is back on Isle. This is her daughter, Mal. Don’t you remember my proclamation to give the new generation a chance?” Ben says to Queen Leah.
”A chance to what, Ben? Destroy us? Come on, you remember don’t you? The poison apples, and the spells? My daughter was raised by fairies because of your mother’s curse. I missed her first steps, her first words...I missed it all!” Queen Leah says angrily.
”I’m so sor-“ Mal starts.
”Get away from her,” Chad says, cutting her off.
”What the hell’s your problem, Chad?” I ask him.
”Don’t do this,” Ben says to Chad.
Chad scoffs, staring at me and Ben in disgust.
”They were raised by their parents, what do you think villains teach their kids, huh? Kindness? Fair play? No way,” Chad says.
”You stole another girl’s boyfriend,” Chad says to Mal.
”Hey!” Ben exclaims.
”You enjoy hurting people,” Chad says to Jay.
”That's not true!” I exclaim.
”And you, you’re nothing but a gold digger and a cheater,” Chad says to Evie.
Evie pulls out her mirror.
”Mirror, mirror in my hand, who’s the biggest jerk in the land?” Evie says, turning it towards Chad.
It shows a reflection of himself.
”What? No way,” Chad scoffs.
Jay steps you and grabs Chad by the shirt.
”Back off, Chad. Back the hell off,” Jay says angrily to him.
Evie then sprays something at Chad. It’s a sleeping potion. Jay lets him fall back into sleep and grabs Evie’s arm. The VKs all walk off.
“Evie did something to Chad!” Audrey exclaims trying to wake him up.
I sit and watch as Lonnie and Audrey try to wake him up. I look to my parents and see as they disapprovingly nod.
God damn it.
”Adri, can’t you do something?” Audrey asks me.
”The venom in my nails should do the trick but his body will be numb for a little bit,” I say.
Audrey nods and I bend down to scratch his arm with my nail using my tiger shapeshift.
Chad wakes up immediately.
”What happened? Why am I numb?” Chad asks.
”I saved your life, idiot,” I scoff.
Audrey thanks me and I roll my eyes. Our school bell rings and we all walk to the cafeteria for lunch. Lonnie and I both pick up trays, walking side by side.
”What now?” Lonnie asks.
”Chad’s such an asshole. I wish more people knew how terrible he was to me. After this, everyone’s gonna be afraid of them I bet. Which means they’ll probably drag me under too,” I say.
Lonnie places a hand on my shoulder as I pick up my plates of food.
”I won’t let that happen to you. I promised you,” Lonnie says.
I smile softly and we walk over to the Royals table.
I see Jay stare at me as I sit with the other Royals. He looks sad and almost disappointed.
“You know it’s almost funny to know that they even tried to associate themselves with Royal society,” One of the girls says.
”I knew they were bad new the minute they walked in,” Audrey adds.
”Oh please, you’re all obsessed!” I exclaim. Everyone at the table stares at me then laughs.
”How would you know? You’ve been busy this whole time making puppy eyes with Jay,” Ruby, Rapunzel’s daughter says.
”Are you kidding me? Before he even asked me out on a date, you were all throwing yourselves into him before the Tourney game,” I add.
”I didn’t not!” Ruby gasps, putting down her cup of tea.
”It was so apparent, Ruby,” Lonnie says, defending me.
Ruby huffs and sips her tea.
”Adri, what do you think about the VKs? You seem to enjoy their company especially after quite an intimate date with Jay,” Audrey asks.
”Excuse me?” I ask angrily.
”Or did the whole Tourney team lie about you getting close with Jay?” Audrey asks.
Chad laughs at Audrey’s additional comment.
”What’re you laughing at, Chad? You jealous that I at least found a guy who had the balls to take me out on date without calling another girl?” I ask.
Chad’s smile drops.
”Oh? I was just thinking about how detailed Jay was when he talked about your little ‘date’. It would be a shame to tell your parents that their daughter was in love and very intimate with their enemy,” Chad says maliciously.
”And would you know about love, Chad? The only love you feel is from watching people suffer,” I scoff.
”That is not true!” Chad exclaims.
“Then stop lying to everyone about what happened at Ben’s stupid party and fess up about how much of a man you really are!” I exclaim.
The whole table goes silent. Chad continues to eat his lunch silently. I can feel the fear radiating off of his aura. He’s scared of me. He’s scared of the truth.
”Audrey, you asked me what I think of the VKs? My only answer is this, we’re all the same people with the same issues, standards, and emotions. They’re exactly the same as we are, if not better,” I say.
”I agree with that statement,” Lonnie says. I wink in her direction as she defends me.
”Jane, come with me to throw out my lunch,” Audrey says, staring at me up and down before turning to leave with Jane at her side.
“That was awesome,” Doug mutters.
I smile softly and continue to eat my lunch. I see Chad give me a side eye and bite his tongue in embarrassment.
“You gonna talk to Jay?” Lonnie asks me in a soft tone.
”Lonnie, can you please shut up?” Chad says frustratedly.
”I’m sorry, Prince Charming, but your just petty because my best friend embarrassed you in front of your pity girlfriend,” Lonnie scoffs.
Chad doesn’t respond and ignores her.
Suddenly, I feel my phone buzz. It’s a text from Jay. I look up and see Jay staring back at me.
”I’m so sorry,” The text reads.
”None of this is your fault. Chad is just being an asshole as usual,” I respond.
”Thanks for sticking up for us,” His new text reads.
Rather than texting him back, I look up and face him. He lifts his head up afterwards and smiles softly. I smile back in response and give him a wink.
Soon, Ben checks up on the VKs. They’re all silent at their table. Doug tried to talk to Evie but Chad calls him back in an angry fit. He’s just mad that I insulted him regarding our past relationship. None of us like talking about it and when I included Jay’s name, it must’ve set something off in him.
Soon, Audrey and Jane return laughing.
“How long does she think that's gonna last? Mal is just the bad girl infatuation,” Audrey comments as they walk toward their table, hovering over Mal.
”Yeah, I mean he’s never gonna make a villain, a queen,” Jane says and they both turn to our table, and everyone except me, Lonnie and Doug laugh. I see Mal swish her fingers in a spell shape. I look over and see Jane’s normal hair return, everyone looks at her in disgust. Lonnie looks down and checks her hair too to see if it changed.
”There's more than where that came from,” Mal says, coming to our table.
”Who do think you are?” Audrey asks.
”Do you think I’m kidding?” Mal asks. She whips out her spell book and Lonnie grabs me and Chad so we can leave the table.
”What’s wrong with all of you?” I mutter.
”Not now, Adri,” Lonnie says, dragging me off.
“Watch, tomorrow everyone will just all be friends and forget this bullshit ever happened,” I scoff.
Lonnie sighs and puts me in a hug.
”You’re so right. But these other royals are used to their ideals and standards. They’re so self-absorbed that it hurts. But Chad has absolutely no right to spread lies about you or anyone else about what’s your business,” Lonnie says.
”It hurts that I can’t win in love. Hell, I don’t even know if Jay really loves me,” I say hesitantly.
Lonnie takes my hand and I turn to face her directly. Her eyes are caring and kind. The same Lonnie that I turned to every time when I needed help.
"Adri, there's no denying that Jay loves you. Otherwise, he would have considered continuing his heartbreaker attitude to get other girls attention. But no, he decided to go on a date with you. Decided to learn the things you like. He decided to talk to you about who he really is and committed to an actual relationship with you. To me, that proves just how much he loves you," Lonnie replies honestly.
I think for a minute. Her words are as true as ever. Since the day I met him, he's been interested in only me. Sure, he does flirt with other girls but it's true. He learned about me, my interests, and made me feel happy by taking me out on a date to help me see a different side of him without casual conversation. It was an intimate experience built for only me to see. That's probably why I trusted him when things went further, and when I introduced him to my parents.
"Thanks," I say to Lonnie, turning to face her again with a smile.
Lonnie ushers me away and I go back to the dorms.
I walk towards Jay and Carlos's dorm and I hear voices coming from the other side of the oak door.
"We get the wand and leave. Jay gets the limo, Evie sprays the driver asleep, and Carlos gets the barrier open. Our parents are counting on us," Mal says to the rest of the group.
"You want to break Ben's love spell?" Evie exclaims.
My eyes widen, "They spelled him?" I think to myself.
"Yeah. You know I've been thinking, you know, when the villains do invade Auradon and begin to loot and kick everyone out of their castles and imprison their leader and destroy everything that's good and beautiful, Ben being in love with me just seems a little extra...cruel," Mal says hesitantly.
"M?" Evie asks softly.
I can feel the tenseness in the air.
"This is our one chance to make our parents proud of us, we can't mess this up," Mal says finally.
Evie, Carlos, Jay's aura's all change to fear, sickness, and depression. It's so strong that I'm even scared for them. After, today's events everything for them has changed drastically. I just feel pity and sorrow for all they have to go through. I start to head to my dorm, when I get a text. I pull my phone from my pocket and I see it's from Jay.
"Can we talk?" The message reads.
"Sure," I say dryly.
I turn around and I head to the courtyard, sitting under the tree I spent most of my days under. Jay appears moments later.
"Is it true?" I start.
"Is what true?" He asks confusedly, taking a seat next to me on the grass.
"That you're only leaving to bring the wand back to the Isle," I cringe.
Jay's eyes widen and his body tenses.
"How much did you hear?" Jay asks hesitantly.
"Does it really matter? What matters is that you lied to me! You lied to me about Mal and Ben, you lied to me about you leaving and guess what this hurts! This all hurts! To be lied to by someone I trusted with my life and to see them suffer because they don't know how to say it!" I exclaim.
"Wait, how do you know that I'm scared?" Jay asks.
"It's obvious! You literally admitted to me that you were happy here. And every time you talk about your dad your tone changes. I saw that look in your eye in the kitchen when I talked about my mom. I saw that moment of hesitation when you talked to my parents and how nervous you got around my dad and my uncle when they spoke to you, right? You don't want to leave and be evil because you'd be leaving the people you love. That's what you told me on our date. I realize now that you were talking about me. And like I told you on that same date. Don't let other people decide who you are. You can be good. I see that. Because if you weren't good, you wouldn't have the capability to love me in the ways you do," I say to Jay, speaking sincerely. After I speak, I could barely notice that I had tears coming from my eyes. My eyes are probably morphed into my tiger for by now. Jay looks directly into my eyes, shocked by my appearance. But then he stops to think. Jay takes in my words deeply, thinking in such deep thought. His eyes have a light glaze to them now.
"Why are you always right?" Jay chuckles softly through sad eyes.
I laugh and lean over to kiss him. Our lips touch softly. Compared to the other times we've kissed, this kiss was full of emotion. Sweet, soft, gentle, and kind. Something I never expected from him. I part the kiss after a couple of moments.
"You're an absolute idiot you know that?" I tell him.
"You are too for not realizing I said the first I love you," Jay says.
I laugh softly, and he looks and me with admiration in his eyes.
"It was subtle!" I say.
"Nice save, dumbass," Jay says, recalling our last conversation under the tree.
"Thanks for noticing," I reply in the same fashion.
We laugh in unison, then Jay stops and pushes a hair behind my ear.
"You've been right this whole time, you know that? So, what do you think I should do?" Jay asks.
"Please, try and convince the others. They need to realize that all they need to be happy is right in front of them. They'll understand if they know what's best for them," I say sincerely.
Jay pecks lips shortly.
"God, I love you," Jay says in a chuckle.
"I love you too," I say softly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's Coronation day at last! I wear this beautiful dress pin.it/5TcjfhI
I wonder how Jay feels as I do the final touches of my hair and makeup. I head out to the door where everyone is dressed up and heading down the stairs to their limos. I meet my brother down at the end of the stairs.
"You look nice!" Aziz compliments.
"You don't look to bad yourself," I say playfully.
"Hey guys, you ready for this coronation party?" Jake says strutting towards us.
"I'm scared out of my fucking mind right now, so do you mind?" I say sharply.
"Damn, is being an advisor really that serious?" Jake asks.
"Essentially, she has to carry out all of Ben's proclamations and duties," Aziz explains.
"So, you run the whole kingdom?' Jake asks.
"In a literal sense, yes. But in status, no. You can just say I'm the brains and beauty of the operation," I said snarkily.
"No doubt about it," Jake says flirtatiously.
"Hey, do you mind not trying to take my girl?" Jay says appearing from the other side of the room.
"Right. Sorry, man," Jake agrees nervously, afraid that Jay might do something to him.
"Hey, babe," I say shortly, kissing him on the cheek.
"Looking strikingly beautiful as always. You nervous?" Jay asks.
"I mean I'm about to get the biggest job of my life handed to me in one fall swoop so, maybe," I say.
"Didn't you just say you're scared out of your mind?" Aziz corrects.
"Your right, I lied," I mutter in defeat.
Jay puts an arm around my waist and kisses my forehead.
"You'll be perfect. Besides, you've already got enough skills and beauty to prove how good you are," Jay compliments.
I roll my eyes and smile softly at his comment.
Carlos comes towards us.
"Hey guys, we gotta go now. The limos are here," Carlos reminds us.
The boys gather themselves leaving me and Carlos alone.
"Did you do that just so you could talk to me?" I ask.
"Maybe," Carlos replies.
Me and the gray-haired boy laugh.
"I know we don't talk much but, Jay has told me a ton about you," Carlos says.
"That's natural. You're his best friend, he talks about you and his's experiences all the time in Biology," I add.
"Really?" He asks.
"Yeah, he tells me pretty much everything," I say.
Suddenly, my mind wanders back to their plan for today. This is my chance to convince Carlos.
"You know, Jay is kinda tough. It takes him a little bit of a push to help him open up," I say.
"From what I've heard you're the only person who's done that and successfully come out without a black eye," Carlos comments. I giggle at the notion.
"But he hesitates a lot, there's still somethings I don't know too much about him but one thing that I do know is that he doesn't know what direction to take in times of struggle. And to make the right choice, I tell him not to let other people decide what's best for him. What do you think about that?" I ask.
Carlos thinks for a bit.
"Well, if I'm honest, I agree with you. Though I kind of struggle with it myself. My mom used to order me around a lot so...trauma," Carlos says.
"Same here! Always so pushy, right?" I comment.
"Too pushy. But as far as Jay goes, he's pretty hard to convince sometimes if he doesn't have any purpose or interest in something. But when it comes to decision-making, he struggles because he's also pressure by his dad to do the things he expects of him. It's as simple as that," Carlos says.
I can feel the sincerity in his voice.
"You know, no one should ever have to come across anything like that. Hell, I've been through it enough times that eventually I had to let go and decide for myself what I wanted to do," I say.
"When'd you realize that?" Carlos asks.
"When I met Jay," I reply.
Carlos smiles at my comment.
"He's my best friend and I care about him a lot. So, if you ever need help when things get difficult, just know I'm here to help," Carlos says.
I smile softly at his words, taking in the kindness of his offering.
"I should go, by the way, you look cute," I say, walking towards the exit. Carlos smiles as I walk away towards the limo.
"There you are! Come on, let's go," Aziz says. I'm hauled into the limo and we drive to the cathedral. There's a blue carpet lined out for us with press lining the barricades.
I step out, careful not to trip and I walk onto the carpet, strutting as I walk. I stop in front of the first row of cameras. The press call my name to alert my attention. I can hear Snow White reporting on everyone else's outfits. As I reach her, she announces my name.
"Adri! It's so nice to see you, darling. Who are you wearing tonight?" Snow White asks.
"I'm wearing a look from Versace's upcoming spring line," I say.
"It looks absolutely beautiful on that figure of yours! Now I have a couple of questions, your hiatus from social media has sparked many rumors among the music industry, are there projects of any kind that we can expect in the future?" Snow White asks.
HOW THE HELL DO I RESPOND? I should've called my publicist before this. I wasn't aware that people actually streamed my music.
"Well, now that my music is more mainstream currently, I have a couple of projects that I could finalize and release. By the way, I'm going to start returning to my socials to catch my fans up on my life and on my art," I say.
"Any albums we could expect to hear?" She asks.
"Possibly, I might have to cook a couple of things up but hopefully I'll have a new release soon," I respond.
"Thank you so much, Adri," Snow White finishes, and I continue down the carpet. As I walk down the carpet, I spot a group of boys at the end of the carpet. Hold on...is that? HOLY CRAP BTS IS HERE?????
I walk quickly down the carpet, I tap the shoulder of the tallest member, my good friend Namjoon.
"Adri? Oh my god, how are you?" Namjoon exclaims. He hugs me tightly.
"I'm good! Annyeong!" I say turning to greet the other boys.
They realize that I'm beside Namjoon and all come to greet.
You might be asking how I know them. Well....to be honest, I wrote a couple of songs for them with Namjoon as my partner. He's actually the person who taught me how to write in the first place, and I composed a couple of their tracks with the help of Yoongi, Lonnie's cousin.
”You nervous?” Jungkook asks me.
”Yeah, it’s like the biggest job of my life and comes with tons of responsibility,” I say.
”If it’s anything like being an idol, you’ll be just fine,” Taehyung says.
I laugh and roll my eyes.
”It’s not that simple, Taehyung,” I say.
”Just loosen up! If anything you’ll mature a little more,” Jin jokes.
”You do know I’m the same age as Jungkook right?” I ask Jin.
”Whatever,” Jin brushes off. I laugh at their actions.
”Hey, if you need anything just text me,” Namjoon says. I nod in agreement and carry on.
I continue and see familiar faces everywhere, my mom’s friends, my dad’s friends, my co-workers, my friends, my family friends. And I end up inside the cathedral next to the one person who helps me out the most.
”Brendon!” I call out.
Ah, yes. Brendon Urie, my co-worker, family best friend.
”What’s up, tiger!” Brendon says.
“Nothing much, just literally about to die inside because of the most important thing in my life,” I say.
”You should’ve called your publicist...” He assumes.
”I know! They asked me so many questions about my music and people keep asking me about my new position as advisor and I don’t know what to say half the damn time,” I say, letting out all my frustration.
”Your gonna suck,” Brendon says.
”Wait what?” I turn to face him confused by his words.
”Your gonna be terrible. Your gonna stumble like usual and stutter. Then your gonna cry and run off like you usually do. You're gonna absolutely suck when you have to confront all these people who have their eyes not only on Ben, it on you as his representative, and your gonna suck because your gonna be a big ‘ol wuss about the situation. Do you want to be a wuss?” Brendon says.
”No,” I say softly.
”Then go suck. Suck with pride,” Brendon says.
I laugh at his confrontation speech.
”Now, that’s a creative way to get me to loosen up,” I say.
”You’re so picky on yourself even when you tell other people not to. It sucks and I know that. You’ve got ambition, that’s all it takes,” Brendon says.
”Thanks,” I say softly.
”Knock 'em dead, kid,” Brendon says.
I squeeze through the people and end up towards the from next to Lonnie. Audrey and Chad link arms and look at me with a scowl on their faces.
”You’ve got no date?” Audrey asks.
”What do you mean? My date’s right next to me,” I say, linking arms with Lonnie.
Lonnie laughs at the situation and I snicker.
”I thought you were coming with Jay?” Lonnie asks.
”Sure, he did ask and I did say yes. But right now he’s occupied. So we’ll probably see each other at the after-party,” I explain, pointing up to the balcony. Jay spots me and waves. I smile and wave shyly.
”You know he’s been staring the whole time,” Arabella says, coming from behind us.
”Really now?” I ask, raising a brow.
”He’s probably jealous that you were talking to the Bangtan boys and Brendon,” Arabella says.
”You a spy now, Bella!” Lonnie asks.
”What? I’m observant. I’ve got a sailor’s eye,” Arabella says.
”Good, keep tabs on him,” I say as I think.
Arabella turns to me confused.
”I want him to be jealous. It makes the party more satisfying,” I say with a smirk.
”Oh...I get what you mean,” Arabella realizes.
Lonnie now turns to me with the same expression Arabella had before.
”I don’t get it,” Lonnie says.
”I’m gonna make him jealous so he could show me if he’s as possessive as I think he is or not,” I explain.
Lonnie nods in understanding.
”But didn’t you say he asked about Jake and Aziz when they-“
”Yes, he did. But that was just an assumption of interest, but we’re dating now. Even if it isn’t completely public, I just want to see how he acts under pressure,” I say.
Suddenly, the chorus starts, and the trumpets are sounded. I see Mal escorted in by us. I wave to her and she waves back with a smile on her face.
“You look hot,” She mouths to me.
I giggle and roll my eyes.
We all turn to face the doors as they open. Ben walks through them and we all bow as he passes.
Fairy Godmother starts by taking her wand from the case and starts to say Ben’s vow. Ben agrees to the bow but before he’s christened, Jane takes the wand from her mother’s hand.
Everyone turns to face the girl who exclaims,” If you can't make me beautiful then I’ll have to do it myself!”
Mal rushes towards her face fights the wand out of her hand.
Evie, Carlos, and Jay appear and stand by Mal.
”I knew it!” Audrey exclaims trying to approach Mal.
I step in front of her.
”Do you want to get hurt?” I say, holding her back.
Audrey hesitates but eventually hides behind me.
Me, Lonnie, and Arabella step in front of the group behind us as self-sacrifice protection from the wand.
”Mal, give me the wand,” Ben calls to her.
”Step back!” Mal exclaims.
”Revenge time,” Jay says, hesitating.
Lonnie turns to face me, searching for a reaction.
Sure, I’m hurt by his words but all that matters is protecting these people. Suddenly, he turns to look at me. His eyes, plead almost whispering “I’m sorry”. And I nod.
”You really want to do this?” Ben asks.
”We have no choice our parents-“ Mal starts.
”Your parents made their choice. Now it’s time for you to make yours,” Ben says.
“I think I want to be good,” Mal hesitates, relaxing her body.
”You are good,” Ben says.
”How do you know that?” Mal asks with fear in her voice.
“Because I’m listening to my heart,” Ben says.
The group relaxes. Mal thinks for a minute and turns to face her friends.
“I want to listen to my heart too. And my heart is telling me we are not our parents. I mean, stealing things doesn’t make you happy, Tourney, Victory pizza with the team and going dates makes you happy,” Mal starts turning to Jay.
”Yeah!” Jake says from the middle of the crowd. Everyone snickers.
Jay grows a blush on his cheeks and then turns to look at me with admiring eyes.
He smiles softly and winks in this direction.
Mal continues.
“And scratching Dude’s belly makes you happy, who would’ve thought?” Mal says to Carlos who holds Dude, the campus dog in his arms.
”And you do not need to play dumb to get a boyfriend, you are so smart,” Mal says to Evie.
”And I don’t want to take over the world and be evil. I want to go to school and be with Ben. Because that makes me happy. Us being friends makes me happy,” Mal says.
Mal puts her fist out in a huddle.
”I choose good, guys,” Mall says laughing through her smile.
The rest of the group hesitates. Mal’s eyes fill with worry until Jay steps forward and put his fist in the huddle too.
”I choose good, too,” Jay agrees.
I smile at his action and he turns to face me again and winks at me this time.
I roll my eyes at his action.
God, I love him.
Eventually, the rest of the group including Ben agrees that the VKs will stay in Auradon and everyone claps.
Until a green cloud of smoke covers the cathedral. Everyone takes cover until the clouding stops.
”I’m back!” Maleficent says revealing herself among the smoke.
We all look at her in shock.
”Go away, mother,” Mal says exasperated by the situation.
”Oh don’t be ridiculous, just give me the wand,” Maleficent orders her daughter.
The Fairy Godmother starts to cast a spell but then times stops.
I feel nothing, see nothing, I can only breathe. So, that’s what happens when time stops. I try to yell or scream but nothing comes out. I just stay in the same position I was in before. Then I can feel things again. I look around and see the situation in different eyes. It’s changed. I step away from the group behind me and everyone starts to realize that they need to file out of the cathedral.
I run over to Jay and he takes me in a warm embrace.
”I told you it would work!” I say happily.
”I know! You’re always right, your so smart and beautiful and-“ Jay starts but then leans in to kiss me.
I break the kiss.
”Hey, don’t do that. We don’t want anyone to see,” I say.
”Who cares?” Jay says.
”Babe, we aren’t exactly public, you know. Royalty drama,” I assume.
He nods in realization.
”Can I kiss you at school though?” Jay asks.
”I guess. Since you pretty much told everyone we were dating but just keep it within the school. The press will hound you,” I say.
”Of course, babe. Anything for you,” He says, then kissing my forehead.
I giggle softly and join the core four and Ben.
The after-party begins and we all gather in celebration, dancing together, talking to each other, introducing each other to new people.
But most of all, I leave with a new job and a new love.

I can also imagine the sudecers using their "otherness" from being from the aisle, another species or higher class as a novelty. So what about the seducees, how would they like to be seduced? And if it is for more manipulative seduction than honest, how would the seducees break it off?
Genetically and culturally speaking, “otherness” can be just as appealing and desired as it is rejected and feared, so yes, the VK’s have the advantage of being from the Isle, someone who AK’s never experienced before. I touched on this with my Chad/Freddie headcanons, his trying to seduce Isle Girls and getting burned very hard by their frank, quick to move on nature.
Not including Allie, Freddie, CJ, or Zevon in this one, I run out of steam quickly with an ask (intense work in short bursts) and my brain doesn’t like leaving these in the drafts. Ask for them.
Ben doesn’t consciously admit it but he enjoys having someone to “protect” and nurture, taking after Belle’s gravitating towards “difficult” people and trying to change them for the better–a “Rescue Romantic,” if you will. What will appeal to him is someone who definitely has issues and is interested in his attempts to bridge the gap with him, let him love them, and attempt to change them for the better. If it’s manipulative–it could definitely happen–Ben will likely try to put them down gently and try to make it as much his problem (which is true, in many respects) than theirs, though he’ll likely cut ties with them or interact at the bare minimum to avoid reigniting things.
Jane just wants someone to protect and love her. She’s not picky–she just wants someone that can soothe her anxieties, tell her it’s going to be okay, be fine with her panic attacks and insecurities without going too hard on the “just throw a thicker skin” and “just ignore them” talk. If it’s going to be breaking it off, she’s going to play up her numerous disorders, panics, and insecurities to completely drain the other person till they declare her too far gone and too much trouble to justify staying–bonus in that she doesn’t feel guilty about breaking up the relationship, it was just “inevitable.”
Audrey wants someone who can take control, be an authority figure, the rock to everything she does, be it regulating her emotions, taking control of problems, or being the handsome/beautiful socialite on whose arm she’s attached to. Among other issues, Audrey suffers from being unable to handle much of anything by herself, quickly falling apart as soon as things aren’t going her way. With manipulative seduction, she will probably milk the other for everything they’re worth and up the ante on her anxieties, but unlike Jane, she is perfectly willing to be the one to burn a helluva bridge and break-up with them in incredibly dramatic ways.
Lonnie is looking for someone who can match her, like her mother did with her father. She wants someone who can catch up to her as she jogs around the lake and stay for the whole session; someone who can match her dance moves; and someone who is on her level. It’s not set in stone, as people’s preferences change, but as is, Lonnie will likely want to be seduced by being challenged in friendly competition to the things she loves, someone who can show she’s as good her. If she’s going to break it off, she’ll either begin to withdraw from the competition and interaction in general, or she’ll up the ante and turn the competition into something less friendly and playful to show she no longer sees them as a partner but as a rival.
Doug, like Jane, isn’t picky, as a result of their shared low self-esteem; he’ll be happy with someone who likes him, cares for him, and doesn’t pick on him too much. What goes well with him is someone with domestic or maternal/paternal instincts, hugging, encouraging, and possibly even doing some of the chores he doesn’t like to do, much like how the Seven Dwarves fondly remember the time when Snow White was their housemate–it’s basically his standard for what “love” is, someone who’s willing to put up with all the dirty work and the boring duties simply because they want to see you happy and healthy. For breaking it off, I don’t know how exactly he would do it uniquely, but I wouldn’t put it past him to suddenly be doing chores all by himself or taking his seducer’s tasks and means of showing affection from them, showing them that their place in his life is over or being steadily taken over by him once more.
