My honest review of the Super Mario Movie :)
Overall: very enjoyable! I was able to have a good time and appreciate everything the movie did well!
MAIN CRITIQUES OUT OF THE WAY:
Voice Acting - Mario and Peach were not my favorite. I was able to kind of look past the voice acting as the movie went on but if I started paying too much attention to it, it was a little rough. They both suffered from not capturing the energy of the characters. Peach in particular was unfortunate to me because she was missing so much of her cute and bubbly energy.
I just really thought Peach could have been done better. She was just ok. I do like that they showed her as caring for the Toads, and sees herself as a guardian to them. I wasn’t against the girlbossification bc it still lined up with games she has been playable in. There’s a scene where she completes an obstacle course and finishes with doing her special floaty dress technique and that was a fun touch. My main criticism with making Peach not as bubbly and almost ridiculously sweet as she normally is was that it would have made parts of the movie make more sense. When Mario shows up, she just kind of accepts him immediately, no questions asked. Just, ok! Sure! Let’s see what you’re made of. And I think that had she been characterized to really lean into the feeling of “I’ll help anyone because I’m just that kind and sweet!” it would have made more sense as to why she helped him so fast.
Music choices were a little??? Questionable. I like the songs chosen outside of the movie, and I think going for 80s songs was fun, but they felt a little out of place and jarring at times. Like there’s a sequence where they’re racing super fast through the Jungle Kingdom and they chose Take on Me for that? The vibes just didn’t match with what was going on and the energy of the song imo.
Things I enjoyed!
THE ART AND ANIMATION: it was so so good. This movie was so pretty to look at. The textures, the colors, the bounciness of everything!! The world was very well done and I loved the atmosphere created in each area. The various Mario species were so fun to see animated in this style. The Mushroom Kingdom looked wonderful and I loved the bustling city nature of it. Personally as a really big fan of the Mario RPG games I think it would have been nice to see citizens who weren’t Toads but that’s a minor complaint. The Jungle Kingdom was really fun too and I loved the tie in with Mario Kart especially in the kart building sequence where it mimicked the kart selection in Mario Kart 8.
The little references and throwbacks: We already saw it in the trailer but the in movie commercial for the brothers calling back to the original super show was still so good. BUT WHAT I WASNT EXPECTING WAS THE DK RAP. I lost my mind. The other main kongs were shown too which was a pleasant surprise!! There were also references to other Nintendo IPs, I noticed Kid Icarus, Star Fox, Game and Watch, and Punch-Out in particular but there was probably more! There is also a reference to the original Jump Man name in the background too. ALSO WE GOT TO SEE PAULINE!!! I was really hoping for maybe seeing Rosalina too bc of that one Luma character but that didn’t happen. I also was hoping for Daisy with maybe a reference to neighboring kingdoms but that didn’t happen either. That’s ok tho! Very minor thing.
BOWSER UGH. Bowser made this movie. So much detail in his animation and Jack Black did phenomenal in his performance. There were quite a few Bowser moments that had me laughing, they characterized him really well for this movie. It felt very classic, reminded me of his portrayal in the comics especially.
Jokes were kind of a hit kind of a miss. There were a few moments that got a big smile or laugh out of me and other moments where I just felt such a deadpan “that wasn’t funny.” But overall there weren’t too many instances I felt myself withering away bc a joke was so bad.
Musical score was very well done. The classic Mario theme songs were integrated very well throughout the movie.
THE MARIO AND LUIGI MOMENTS WERE SO GOOD. I loved the love they captured that they have for each other. Mario cares about his bro so much and Luigi looks up to him and it’s so sweet. That was captured very well in their characterization. Their reunion hug after Luigi is rescued was adorable and I also loved seeing a little flashback sequence with baby Mario and Luigi.
Overall I think the movie did a good job with capturing the energy of the baseline Mario games. Out of all the Mario movies that have been made so far, it definitely does that the best. (Great Mission to Save Princess Peach is still the best Mario movie though)

10* games to know me! (*it was hard to fit ten games onto here so here's kind of a good analysis of it)
1. Wandersong
Ahh, this was the first game I think where I was involved with a fandom and for good reason because Wandersong is so dang good after hearing some stuff about it on the internet years ago! Chicory: A Colorful Tale also is related since the man who made WS also made this too.
2. Dicey Dungeons
Dicey Dungeons is becoming one of my new favorite games because of the easy to learn game style, cool art style, and great soundtrack as well! Also, because of working with mods with art for enemy and player sprites, this game kind of is responsible for getting me back into making art.
3. Guitar Hero/Rock Band
These two game series was kind of my first experience with rhythm gaming and also it actually got me into drumming in real life! I still play these games nowadays to some degree thanks to Clone Hero (fan game which plays like these two series).
4. Racing games in general
I grew up playing a lot of arcade racing games and still play some to this day, so basically this could be considered one of my favorite genres. Games I love from this genre are Hydro Thunder, the Rush series, the Ridge Racer games, Mario Kart DS and 8 Deluxe, Midnight Club II and 3 REMIX, the early Gran Turismo games, the Burnout series and the list could go on, but it could go on forever.
5. Skateboarding games in general
Skateboarding games are super fun! I play the early Tony Hawk’s games because of the addicting gameplay and the Skate series because tricks are super good when you get used to the control setup and the Skate games are the types of game where you can relax, get on, and ride around in the city and do tricks whenever you feel like doing so.
6. Dance Dance Revolution
Another rhythm game series that I do enjoy a lot since this was another first experience of rhythm gaming for me! There was a period in my life that played the heck out of this and got very good, but nowadays I would probably never reach the same skill level as back in the day, heh heh 😅 The beatmania and pop'n music series also are related since they also fall under the same umbrella of rhythm games that Konami makes (under the BEMANI brand) and has somewhat shaped my music tastes nowadays (plus I kind of do like pop’n music’s art style).
7. Pikuniku
Ahh, this game is so good! I love this game’s quirky style and the soundtrack matches the games tone as well, it’s one of my favorites! The only thing that is my least favorite part was that it’s so short to beat the game though, man this game honestly needs a sequel
8. Rhythm Heaven (series in general)
Ooooh, the Rhythm Heaven games are so great with the gameplay, the soundtrack, and the art style too! I personally prefer the DS installment and Fever.
9. Neopets
Oh yeah; I’ve been playing Neopets since 2008 and am still am to this day to some degree! My first account sadly got frozen but I am still going strong on my second account :)
10. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004
I put this one on here because TW2004 also feels like somewhat of a “relax and just play” game as well, although it’s better if you beat the main campaign beating all the golfers first (which is tough but doable!). I would also put TW2003 and TW2005 too because I grew up with those ones but I heard 2004 is the better version with more courses and such and it shows.

I Have Now Watched Teen Titans (2003) and Will Give You My Episode Because I Feel Like It (SPOILERS)
Worst Episodes
5. Homecoming-Honestly there aren’t a whole lot of outright bad Teen Titans episodes. The Brotherhood of Evil are good, and I love the Doom Patrol showing up. This mainly got on the list because Mento is so lethally stupid of a leader that I just really hate him in this episode.
4. Only Human-Again, not bad. Atlas is a silly villain whom I love because he’ll throw hands over losing a video game, and Keith David and John Dimaggio are a great pairing. It’s just got a dumb “Your heart will bring you through” lesson when Cyborg has a literally weight limit due to being robotic.Eh, not awful.
3. Forces of Nature-This one actually is bad. Thunder and Lightning are not engaging characters, the Beast Boy-learns-to-say-sorry subplot was weak, and Slade has a random fire demon ritual. Typical crummy Moral of the Week writing from a show that would later do great at it with episodes like Spellbound and Troq.
2. Fractured-Larry’s really annoying. There are a lot of Teen Titans episodes about reality warpers causing mischief, and Larry is far and away the worst of them, even though he’s the closest one to heroism. I will never watch this episode again, not even for sexy sexy Johnny Rancid.
1. The Beast Within-Sure, I’ll follow public opinion! The plot contrivances of ignoring Beast Boy’s toxic waste encounter and a second Man-Beast were too much for the gritty, dark tone. I actually think a full episode exploring their anti-bad guy bias when one of their own seems to turn would be a cool episode, but they already softballed it with Apprentice, so some of the impact got lost. Ah well.
Best Episodes
10. Revved Up-I love Wacky Races and Mario Kart, so an entire episode around race hijinx is right up my alley, and they play the chaos and character interplay very well. Ding Dong Daddy’s hilarious, the T-Car gradually breaks down, and Starfire and Raven get to do the one bit from Blazing Saddles. Coolio!
9. Lightspeed-I do love the HIVE Five. They’re a really endearing anti-Teen Titans, and I wish we got more of them. These perspective flip episodes are really fun, and the zany characters are a huge boost. Billy Numerous and See-More are hilarious, and Mammoth yelling “Hey, I paid for that!” was top-notch. Plus, Kid Flash was a fun nemesis, and Jinx gets to tell off Madame Rouge, that hussy.
8. Masks-Slade could sometimes get on my nerves. His “all part of the plan” coolness seemed less like a trait of an awesome strategist and more like a writing excuse at times. However, here we get to see him and Robin play manipulation chess, and having a direct opponent was an excellent choice. Plus, it has the Red X costume, and though it didn’t make the list, Apprentice also became awesome in large part because of the boost this episode gave to Slade’s legitimacy.
7. For Real-Ok, this will be the last Season Five episode. Control Freak is a hilarious villain who combines the zany reality warping of Mumbo Jumbo with the pathetic joke nature of Dr. Light into a giant nerd with a chip on his shoulder and too much power. His gauntlet match really helped legitimize the Titans East and was just ingenious in general. The gag of him expecting the main Titans and his traps getting busted was also great as was the chatroom gang. Solid episode all around!
6. The End-Trigon had a lot of setup. Zombie Slade, the occult symbols, Raven’s paranoia. With all the build, one could reasonably fear the entrance not measuring up. It did. Trigon instantly turned the world to lava and became a giant must-destroy-but-can-we freakout final boss (except for the Brotherhood of Evil) that very nearly killed the Teen Titans, and the sheer drama of it all made for some excellent villainous television.
5. Birthmark-Speaking of setup for Trigon, this is an entire episode of Slade hunting down Raven. The horror of fire demon zombie Slade and the gradual dissection of the team leading up to all the markings was a super-tense effort. This was a key moment in making us believe that we the viewers should keep watching for The End while also being a great episode to watch itself.
4. A Date With Destiny-Enough seriousness! Let’s do a prom episode with killer moths and Killer Moth. Watching Robin suffer and sulk his way through slow dances and a tuxedo before getting to tell Kitten off was hilarious, and bumbling, daughter-enabling, city-threatening Killer Moth was a great villain. Likewise, Kitten was a hilarious bratty diva who filled the villain shoes quite well. Top notch!
3. The Sum of His Parts-This is probably the first great episode of Teen Titans, and it set the formula for a lot of future serious episodes: psychological dissection of a Teen Titan. Mumbo Jumbo is fun and all, but the slow tension of Fixit trying to turn Cyborg full robot and showing how dear his humanity is was one of the more painstaking episodes, and it definitely made this into their Heart of Ice. For the thoughtful Teen Titans fan, I say this.
2. Revolution-And for the Teen Titans fan hopped up on sugar, I say this! Mad Mod’s got one joke: he’s British. It’s a joke that doesn’t last more than two episodes, but man do they get their money’s worth here. Every moment is another British pop culture reference as this loony Brit sinks his teeth into every piece of the scenery. As mentioned before, there were a lot of mischievous reality warper episodes, and this one is head and shoulders above them all. And now, time for the final crumpet of this tea time.
1. Haunted-Again, I am willing to follow public opinion. It’s just a really fraught episode where Slade becomes a horror movie ghost villain, and Robin slowly unravels. Again, it’s all about the tension of “How did he come back from the dead?” “Oh crap, is Robin going to be ok?” “Man, Raven took one in the kisser through psychic powers!” The Titans writers are very creative, but they usually save their powers for zany antics and goofball villains (which I love: see entries 10, 7, 4, and 2). However, here they use those powers for evil, and man is it unsettling. Best Teen Titans episode ever!

--
When you’re twelve, and almost at the end of your first year of high school, you get into a fight with your parents as to whether or not you still need a babysitter. Much to your chagrin, however, they don’t see twelve as ‘practically sixteen, which is practically an adult’ and you sulk for the full three days leading up to the night they were going out. The night of, you’re fully intending on staying in your room, until there’s a knock at the door, and you hear a voice that is absolutely not your usual babysitter.
“Be good,” your parents call to you as they’re leaving, having noticed where you’d cracked the door to your room to see who it was. You make a face at them, but you’re surprised to see a kid from Sixth Form on crutches, who is absolutely not Madeline, standing in the hallway awkwardly. You’re pretty sure you’ve seen him around school, maybe he’s on the soccer team? You’re not sure.
“You’re not Maddy,” you tell him, opening the door a little wider, and he seems surprised for a moment to see you there. A kind, awkward smile appears on his face as he regards you with gentle amusement.
“Well spotted, I’m Ben, Maddy’s got the flu,” he explained easily, and offered his hand, “you’re Y/N, right?” And he’s trying so hard, but you’re still kind of mad at your parents for insisting on a babysitter in the first place.
“Who else would I be?” You asked flatly, which surprised a laugh from Ben, but you shook his hand anyways; you had to give him props for trying, “why are you using crutches?” You asked outright, since you’re pretty sure he wasn’t using crutches last time you saw him at school. You turned, heading for the living room, deciding to at least give him a chance.
“Sprained my ankle in class the other week,” he explained, hobbling along behind you.
“Sport or just P.E?” You asked, throwing yourself onto the sofa and picking up the TV remote. Ben was quiet for a long moment, and when you look at where he’s sitting gingerly on the edge of the sofa, he’s making a face like he doesn’t quite want to admit the truth.
“Theater sports,” he explained, which piqued your interest, which, of course, you try not to let show on your face, because if your babysitter knows you already think he’s cool, you might die of embarrassment. But also, you suddenly feel incredibly validated for taking those theater classes every Thursday afternoon.
“They’re -” he tries to explain, but you give another eye roll.
“I know what theater sports are,” you tell him, and his smile turns amused.
“You do?” He asks, and you think he might be a little bit impressed, or perhaps it was just wishful thinking, either way, you nod firmly, “well I was in the middle of Space Jump - you know Space Jump, right? Where you start an activity and then someone else calls ‘Space Jump’ and you have to freeze and they have to make a new scene from your freeze, and then someone else comes in -” he explained, mostly to save you the embarrassment of admitting you didn’t know the game, “well I was up on one leg on a chair, climbing the rigging of a ship, you know how pirates do, and I froze, and -” he gestured how he’d fallen off the chair, with accompanying sound effects.
“Couldn’t you have just put your other foot down and balanced yourself?” You offered, and he shook his head, expression adamant.
“It’s all about the commitment to the bit; I was trying to entertain them, and the best way I can do that is to put myself out there one-hundred percent,” he told you sincerely, “you’ve always gotta follow through.”
“You sprained your ankle,” you pointed out, “isn’t that dangerous advice?” He deflates a little, looking down at his leg.
“Follow through but use your common sense, you’ve got common sense, don’t you?” He asked, giving a wry smile, two which you nodded diligently, “don’t get yourself hurt, then,” he suggests, before changing the subject quickly, “you hungry yet? Your parents said we could order pizza.” You’re easily excited by the thought of pizza, a rare treat your parents allowed you whenever you were babysat.
It’s a pretty uneventful night, all things considered, you order pizza, and he lets you win at Crash Team Racing, and you’re falling asleep to a comedy movie until Ben gently suggests that you go to bed. You’re too tired to argue and try and weasel your way into staying up later, so you yawn loudly and wish him a good night before shuffling off to bed. The house is quiet, apart from where he’s watching a Top Gear rerun and waiting for your parents to get home.
You don’t think about it much beyond telling your parents ‘yeah, he’s pretty cool’ when they ask. You don’t think about him much beyond that, at least not for almost a full week, until you’re sitting in your geography class just before lunch, having managed to snag a seat by the window looking out onto the back field, and there’s a PE class doing laps on the field. All are running, except the teacher, and a boy with blonde hair, standing with all his weight on one foot, and a pair of crutches tossed to the side, looking like he’s arguing the teacher.
“I heard when you’re in sixth form you get to push in the front of the line at the canteen,” you hear your friend, Merissa, next to you muse, and when you turn, she’s followed your gaze outside to the field. After a moment, you turn again, and watch the blonde attempt to put weight on his obviously injured foot; it looks like he regrets it, and he sits on the grass, sulking.
“That’s probably Ben,” Merissa tells you matter-of-factly, “he’s on the football team with my brother.” And something about the kind of unwarranted pride in her voice at being in the know makes your face scrunch up. Part of you wants to tell her that you know who Ben is, obviously, but another part of you doesn’t want to admit to still needing a babysitter; it feels childish. So you keep your mouth shut and turn to back to the board.
And the following week, in your weekly theater class, you’re about to take your turn at Bus Stop, wherein your goal is to make the other person on the ‘bus stop’ as uncomfortable as possible until they finally leave, which is when you’ll assume the roll of the innocent bystander, and someone else from the class will come up and try and make you uncomfortable. It’s a lesson on improvisation disguised as a game.
The voice you’ve been practicing slightly pinches your vocal cords, and you’ve barely got a moment to assume a matching physicality, and you worry for a second that it’s not funny, that you’ll just look like an idiot -
Put yourself out there one hundred percent.
You steel yourself, making strange shapes with your hands as you twist yourself into as much of a creature as possible, within reason, using the strange voice you’d concocted, feeling a thrill as your entrance gets the biggest laugh of the class. Oh.
A few months later, in the Summer after your first year of high school, you’re finally thirteen, and are allowed to have the house to yourself for the day, but if you’re parents are anticipating staying out later than midnight, you need -
“Please,” you begged, “just don’t say babysitter, I’m not a baby.”
“Fine,” they acquiesce, “you need supervision, just if we’re out very late.”
Despite your indignation at the situation, Maddy’s got a cello concert, and you’re hoping that that means -
Ben greets you like a friend, wearing a denim jacket with no crutches, and he might be the coolest person you know.
“You still on Crash Team Racing?” He asks with raised eyebrows as he heads into the living room, and you roll your eyes.
“That’s so old school,” you scoff, and he raises his hands in surrender, trying not to look as amused as he feels, watching as you pull out two Wii remotes, “Mario Kart’s much better.” And you hand him one.
He’s not above letting you win, but it turns out, he doesn’t have to; you’re scarily good at the game, which you credit to playing pretty much nothing else for a solid month, and by the time the pizza arrives, the win ratio is about fifty-fifty, and you’ve bonded considerably over your mutual and unreasonable hatred for Waluigi, the only NPC who seems to consistently beat you both.
“Do you get to push in the front of the line at the canteen?” You asked, holding your pizza in one hand and letting it cool for a moment.
“Huh?” Ben’s burnt the roof of his mouth, and is reaching for his drink when you ask, “whaddya mean?”
“My friend Merissa says Sixth Form gets to push in the front of the line.”
“I don’t think we’re technically allowed to,” he says after a moment of consideration, and you hear his nonverbal ‘but we still do’ anyways, “it’s not a rule rule, you know?”
“Are the A-levels hard?”
“Haven’t done ‘em yet,” he answers honestly, burping quietly after taking a drink, and you hum, and take a bite of pizza.
“I’m already scared of my GCSEs,” you admit after a moment of chewing, and Ben laughs gently.
“You’ve got nothing to be afraid of,” and he sounds like he means it, so you can’t help but believe it, soothed a little in your premature worrying. To be fair, Ben could say anything about school or life and you’d probably believe it; he was cool and older than you, but he treated you like a friend.
You mention in passing that you’d gotten the lead for your class’s skit in the end of year showcase your theater company puts on, and mentions that it’s because you’d been committing to the bit in class, and the pride in his voice when he congratulates you is something you end up thinking about for days.
He ends up babysitting you twice more that Summer, not that you were complaining. It meant you got pizza, and to hang out with the coolest person you knew, a fact which you reiterated to your parents, much to their fond amusement, though you made them swear to never tell Ben that. He brought over Super Smash Bros and you guys would play for hours.
The only problem was that Ben was never allowed to know about the crush you had on him, because everyone in the world knew it was weird to have a crush on your babysitter, and you’re pretty sure he has a girlfriend and -
Doesn’t matter. You’re just started to discover the delightful world of crushes and relationships, and Merissa has a boyfriend on Tumblr, and you know that when you get back to school you can have a normal crush on a normal boy in your year, even if all the boys in your year look like thumbs. And Ben...
Is your babysitter. And a decent guy. And your friend, sort of. So you just hope he hasn’t noticed.
After Summer, he’s studying his A-levels, and Maddy’s got a day job so she can babysit at nights again, and it feels like everything’s gone back to normal, like you can breathe again.
You’ve never really seen him at school; you don’t tend to hang around the back fields, but a few weeks into the first term, you’re having lunch with Merissa and Charlie, one of your other friends, in the library, when you spot him laden down with textbooks, making his way to one of the study rooms at the back. You’re not sure if he’ll even acknowledge you, even though your table is directly along the best route to the back rooms, so you just give him and smile and a nod in greeting.
“Hey, Y/N,” he grins quickly, doesn’t stop, but nods in return, and your heart feels like it’s beating out of your chest. Charlie sinks her nails into your arm the moment he’s gone into the study room, and Merissa quietly screeches your name.
“Chill out,” you’re trying to keep a low profile, but both other thirteen year old girls are demanding to know what just happened, “we’re friends.” You say with a shrug that’s far too casual.
“Friends?!” Merissa demands, and you can feel yourself growing more flustered.
“We hung out a few times during summer,” you open your notebook in front of you, trying to distract yourself.
“You hung out with Ben? Y/N he’s a football guy, he’s so old, he’s like eighteen!”
“We’re friends,” you insist, “don’t be, like, creepy about it,” you snorted, and Charlie let out a pterodactyl-like noise. They drop it at your insistence, and you’re just glad they don’t ask you to elaborate.
You don’t see Ben much after that anymore, he’s too busy with his A-levels to babysit, and when you’re fourteen, your parents agree that you don’t need a babysitter anymore. You’re more than happy to let your Summer crush fall to the wayside, and let your memories of Ben, like all good Summer memories, fade into blurry obscurity.
You wouldn’t need to worry about seeing him again anyways, right?
Oh how wrong you were.

Exactly Who is Janus?!
In the last video, Patton had finally learned Deceit's real name! Now, Patton is bombarding Janus with questions on he is. But, when Patton oversteps a little bit, Janus decides to let him know...with subtle hints...
This was inspired by a multitude of @fluffymary's fanart. I know you didn't ask for this, but I'm giving it to you. Why? Just because. Your artwork is SO GOOD! I love it! So, here's an appreciation fic for you. :)
Janus was sitting, playing a video game in a large leather chair in the living room. He was playing Mario Kart Deluxe 8 on his Nintendo Switch, playing as Wario on a motorcycle. Even though he was fully focused into the video game, Janus was also able to notice Patton's presence behind him. After finally finishing the last lap and getting second in the ranking, Janus looked over his shoulder to look at the childish boy watching over his shoulder.
"..........Yeeeeessss?" Janus asked, giving Patton the 'keep talking' hand signal.
"So...Janus! Janus, Janus, Janus. Jan-nus! J-nus. Janus the snake boy!" Patton said, playing around with his name.
"What do you want?" Janus asked, growing slightly impatient with him.
"Sorry! I'm getting used to calling you Janus rather than Deceit. Janus...totally not like the dork from Mean Girls..." Patton muttered.
Janus sighed and put his switch down, allowing his game to just stay at the after-race options screen forever. "Do you need something? Or can I just be on my way?" Janus asked. The truth was, Janus wasn't sure whether he should be taking Patton seriously or not right now. So, asking this would help Patton get the point across quicker.
"Well, I do...but it's also gonna take some time. So, if you have other things to do, or races to win, I can leave you alone." Patton told him in response.
Janus didn't really expect such an...open-hearted answer...which is ironic, because Patton is literally described as 'Thomas's heart'. Was Patton guilt tripping him? Or was he being considerate? Was Patton able to sense some existing irritation? Janus didn't know what to do now. But he soon decided to push down whatever irritation he had going through his brain. Janus turned off his switch and got up from his comfy chair. "Well...would you like a drink of some sort? I assume since we're gonna be talking for a while, the least I can do is to offer up something to drink." Janus offered, putting on a small, genuine smile to convince Patton.
Patton gave Janus a toothy smile and a small giggle. "I didn't know you could act like such a gentleman!" Patton reacted.
Janus rolled his eyes, but smiled. "Well, I can be quite...unpredictable..." Janus replied smugly.
"And mysterious." Patton added. Janus was taken back by that last part. He looked at Patton in subtle surprise. "I know all kinds of things about all the sides...except for you. I know almost nothing about you." Patton explained.
Janus shrugged his shoulders. "I suppose that's what happens when you silently judge the dark sides for years on end." Janus said bluntly. Patton winced at that. The sad part was, it was true! But...that was years ago. Patton has changed in a couple years...for the better.
"I'm sorry Janus...I was very prejudiced in the past. But...When Virgil came into my life, I...I began to have hope for the dark sides." Patton admitted.
Janus looked at Patton. He smiled. "Okay. I will admit: you did seem pretty calm about me pretending to be you that one day." Janus mentioned.
Patton crossed his arms and smiled. "And then you went on to do an impression of Logan." Patton added.
"Never doing that again." Janus said back to him.
Patton guffawed. "You already DID do it again! You dressed up as Logan TWICE!" Patton reminded him.
Janus's eyes widened, as he realized his mistake. He lowered his head to hide his embarrassment. "Right..."Janus muttered.
"SO:" Patton declared, sliding himself in front of Janus and grabbing the leather armrests. "Your name is Janus, and you represent Thomas's imperfection. How old are you?" Patton asked, leaning in closer and closer to the snake man.
Janus turned his head to the side, to look away from Patton and allow himself to properly focus. "I-...Yes. And, I'm technically 2 years old." Janus told him.
"Cool! And how long have you been existing inside the mind palace for?" Patton asked.
Janus thought for a moment. "...I believe my birth came about when Thomas was 3 years old, reaching 4 years of age." Janus replied.
Patton thought for a moment. "Yeeeaaah...I guess that would make sense." he replied. "Okay. Next question: Do you like cookies?" Patton asked.
"No." Janus replied with a smirk.
"Would you like one?" Patton asked, conjuring up a plate of cookies right in front of them.
Janus's eyes widened in surprise for a moment, before lessening back to normal and looking at the yummy chocolate chip cookies in front of him. Janus took a couple cookies and began to munch on them. "Thank you." Janus said, accidentally causing a few crumbs to fall down his lips.
"No problem." Patton replied. "So, are you part snake just on your face? Or, is your whole body part snake?" Patton asked. Janus removed his gloves and showed him his hands. "The latter! Okay." Patton reacted. "Can I feel?" Patton asked.
Janus blinked in surprise. "Feel?" Janus clarified.
"Yeah. I wanna feel your scales." Patton explained. Janus lifted an eyebrow, but reached his hand out for Patton to feel. Patton began feeling the different scaly pieces on his hand, that contrasted with the rest of his skin. The outside of his hand was completely covered in scales, while the inside of his hand was a transition from underbelly snake scales to regular human skin. It was very strange to look at from a human point of view. But, it was more intriguing to Patton rather than strange.
Janus watched as Patton carefully dragged his finger across the scales on the outside of his hand. Curiously, Patton also lifted up the sleeve, and noticed that the scales ran up his arm as well! Patton only felt the lower forearm and the wrist however, before pulling the sleeve back down and letting go. "That...is really cool." Patton told him.
Janus looked up at Patton and smiled. "Thank you." he replied.
"Are the 3 arms on your left side covered in scales as well?" Patton asked.
Janus lifted an eyebrow, but allowed his other 4 arms to slide out in front of Patton. Now, all 6 of his hands were showing themselves to the father figure before him. Janus specifically removed the other 2 gloves from the hands on his left side, and showed Patton the scaly backs and the skin-covered palms. Patton looked at the hands' scales, and noticed how similar they were to each other. They all had yellowish scales, with snake underbelly scales leading up to regular skin on the palms.
"This is so cool!" Patton exclaimed, dragging a finger across the top hand's scales.
Janus found it a little funny that Patton was so interested in such a thing. But one thing that Patton DIDN'T know about, was just how sensitive his scales were. "A snake's scales are known to be very sensitive. Specifically, the special scales surrounding my fingers and my palms." Janus told him, dragging his own finger across the sides of his hand.
Patton smiled and looked at the underbelly scales. "They're almost the same color as your skin!" Patton declared, dragging a finger around the sides of Janus's fingers.
Out of nowhere, a yelp and a titter filled the room. Patton made a questioning hum as he lifted his head up, and couldn't help but notice the wobbly smile spreading on Janus's face. Patton narrowed his eyes and smirked suspiciously.
"Janus?" Patton asked.
"Mm-hm?" Janus replied.
"You used the word sensitive to describe your special scales...right?" Patton asked, keeping his fingernail super close to the side of Janus's thumb.
Janus bit his lip. "Mm hmm...I did." Janus replied.
Patton started dragging his finger up and down the ball-shaped spot under Janus's thumb. "So...did you mean sensitive as in..." Patton paused, before picking up his finger movements to make them flutter. "...Ticklish?" Patton asked.
Janus was now pulling on the hand that was being held hostage, and trying to keep his chuckles and giggles under control. To make matters worse, Patton was just staring at him with an evil, confident smirk on his face. He was determined to tickle him with what little information he had in his grasp...LITERALLY.
"So, which spot would you say tickles more? This spot-" Patton began wiggling a couple fingers on the far side of Janus's palm, below the pinky finger. "-Or this spot?" Patton asked as he wiggled his fingers on the sides of the snake's wrists. Janus clenched his teeth at the new spots, but also clenched his fists at the spot Patton was tickling at the moment. Weirdly enough, the wrists themselves were REALLY bad compared to the hands themselves. So bad in fact, that Janus was getting closer and closer to breaking already! And it's only been about 5 minutes!
"Pahatton, Not-not thehere!" Janus begged, accidentally letting out a couple giggles amidst his protests.
Patton noticed this as well. "And why not?" Patton asked, before fluttering his index finger on the left side of the carpal tunnel area. "Ticklish?" Patton asked.
Amazingly, that was the exact moment when Janus had broken! "Pfffftthehehehehehehehe! HahahaHAHAHAHAhahaha! Pahahattohohon! Dohohohohon't!" Janus protested. His giggles had broken through his titters, and they were now filling the room.
Patton gasped and covered his mouth in surprise. Suddenly, Patton broke his calm composure and squealed excitedly! "Your giggles! Janus, your giggles are so-...Giggly!" Patton complimented as best he could. Janus's eyes widened as he looked at Patton with a big, red blush on his face. "That's a good thing! I love them! They're so free!" Patton added, trying to make Janus feel a bit better.
Janus looked down and away from Patton and used his hat to cover up the big, genuine toothy smile that filled his lips. He couldn't figure out what to do with himself! It was such an awkward, but genuine moment that Janus had never really had before.
In an attempt to see Janus's smile, Patton gently placed a few fingers under his chin and attempted to lift his chin up. Though he managed to get some sort of smile in his view, Janus was somewhat resisting Patton's kind advances. Instead though, he giggled and pushed Patton's fingers away.
Patton giggled back. "ticklish neck too?" he asked.
Janus looked away before looking back at Patton. "No." Janus replied awkwardly.
Patton narrowed his eyes to try and look at something. He walked himself closer to him and lifted his chin. "Wow! I had no idea your scales went down to your jaw! Like, look at this! It goes to your chin, and it ends at your neck!" Patton reacted, poking and gently touching Janus's jawline.
Janus yelped and immediately fell into cute little giggles. Patton was genuinely intrigued, but he was also curious to know just how ticklish Janus really was. Were all his scales more ticklish and sensitive than his skin? Or, were certain scaly spots more ticklish than others?
Suddenly, Patton felt a pair of hands squeezing his sides! "YeeEEEEK!" Patton squeaked, hanging his head and covering his mouth. Janus let out another giggle. Only, this giggle was lower in pitch, and more...evil.
"I'll say, I am pleasantly surprised. It can't be real! Is the ultimate tickle monster in the mind palace...ticklish himself?" Janus asked in a sly, low voice. Patton began letting out nervous little giggles while attempting to get himself out of this mess with protests. But unfortunately, his giggles were turning his protests into unhelpful babbles.
Janus began wrapping his bottom pair of arms' fingers around Patton's hips. "Apologies, Patton...It seems you're speaking in incoherent gibberish! Perhaps a little..." Janus paused his words to give Patton's hips a quick, deep squeeze. "...push will help you?" Janus suggested.
Patton yelped at the hand placement, and squeaked like a mouse at the sudden squeeze. Patton immediately placed both hands onto Janus's lower pair, and attempted to pull them off him. But, Janus noticed Patton's open armpits and shoved his top pair of hands inside the armpits! "EEEEEHEHEHEHEHE! JANUHUHUHUHUHUS! NOHOHOHO AHAHAHARMPIHIHIHITS!" Patton yelled, falling into laughter in mere seconds.
"Well! It certainly made you louder, but I still can't quite understand everything you're saying. But, I did understand the last word: armpits. Using that, I can determine what you were saying!" Janus explained casually, as if Patton wasn't being tickled at all.
"YEHEHEHES! YEHEHES, YEHES, YESYESYEHEHES!" Patton reacted. Oh man! Yes! He was going to get free!...Or so he thought. The moment Janus started tickling Patton's belly with his middle pair of hands, Patton began to doubt his chances of escape.
"You wanted me to keep tickling you under the armpits! Am I correct?" Janus asked, lessening his middle and lower hands to solely focus on the armpits.
"WHAHAHAT?! NOHOHO! NONONONONOOOHOHO! THAHAHAT'S NAHAHAT WHAHAHAT IHIHI MEHEHEHEHEAHAHANT!" Patton yelled back. His squirming had greatly picked up. Just from this, Janus was able to see that this was one of Patton's worst spots.
"Oh! Really? Hmm...That's strange. I could've sworn that was what you said." Janus muttered.
Unfortunately, Patton's squirming and armpits were closing, not allowing him much room to work with. So, Janus stopped tickling and waited for him to calm down. When Patton was calmed down enough, his grip on Janus lessened so that Janus could get his hands out. Janus gently wiggled his hands out. But as soon as the sly snake was given control, Janus immediately took a hold of Patton's wrists and lifted them up. With more room to tickle under the armpits, Janus removed his right hand glove and started exposing the spots with his wiggly fingers.
"OHOHOHO GAAAHAHAHAHAHAD! YOHOHOHOU EHEHEHEVIHIHIL SNAHAHAHAHAKE! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" Patton shouted.
"There we go! Look at all the spots I was missing! Did you know that by keeping your arms down, you weren't allowing me to tickle...right here?" Janus asked, before immediately digging his fingers in the curve of his one armpit.
"aaahahahAHAHAHAHAHA! OH GEEZ- OHOHOHO GEEHEHEHEHEHEHEZ!" Patton shouted as he began going crazy from all the tickles.
"Hmm...Something tells me you're too ticklish here. Perhaps I should try somewhere else?" Janus suggested.
Patton nodded his head frantically, in hope that it would lessen. "YEHEHEHES! OHOHO PLEHEHEHEAHASE! THEHEHEY'RE TOHOHOHO TIHIHICKLIHIHIHIHISH!" Patton begged.
"Very well." Janus declared. With one last tickle, Janus stopped his fingers and let the poor boy get a breathing break.
Patton happily took it, breathing in deep to try and make up for as much air as possible, in one go. "Th-Thank yohou...Thank you Jahanus..." Patton said, growing calmer by the minute.
"No problem, my friend." Janus replied, holding onto Patton with his middle pair of arms under his armpits to prevent Patton from falling to the ground. "I do have a question though: Do you have a favorite spot to be tickled?" Janus asked.
Patton's face almost immediately turned a light shade of red. He awkwardly bursted into giggles at the thought of it, and hung his head to cover up his blushing. "Reheheahally? Uuuhuhuhuh..." Patton giggled as he stuttered.
Janus lifted an eyebrow curiously. "Are you going to reply Patton?" Janus asked. Patton only continued to giggle helplessly in pure embarrassment. The teases were getting to him a LOT. "Or am I going to have to try out a few spots myself?" Janus suggested. Patton squealed at the suggestion alone, and fell into even MORE giggles! Finally, after a bit of waiting, Janus decided to go for the latter. Janus brought his lower pair of hands down to Patton's waist, and gently placed them onto his hips.
"OHOHohohoho nohohohohoho! Thahahat's aha suhuhuhupeher tihihihicklihihish spohohot." Patton told him.
Janus smirked. "I'll take that as a no then." Janus decided. He moved his hands up to the belly region, and lifted up Patton's shirt to get better access. As soon as one of the hands landed on Patton's belly, Patton's giggles went up a couple octaves and a huge, toothy smile overcame his lips. Janus noticed almost immediately. He hummed. "A good spot, I believe?" Janus asked. Patton nodded his head in reply.
Janus smirked and began squeezing his fingers all over his tummy. "EEEEEHEHEHEHEHEHEHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! THIHIHIHIHIS IHIHIHIHIS FUHUHUHUHUN! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" Patton reacted happily.
Janus's jaw dropped. "You LIKE this?" Janus asked, still tickling him.
"YEHEHEHEHEHES! IHIHIHIHI LOHOHOHOHOVE IHIHIHIHIT!" Patton replied, all giggly and pink in the face.
"Hmm...How about here then?" Janus suggested and wiggled his index finger inside Patton's belly button. Almost immediately, Patton squeezed his eyes shut and fell into a mix of giggles and cackles. His arms were no longer flailing around and were instead, clutching his upper stomach as he laughed freely. "Fascinating! Even as you experience breathlessness, you still want to keep being tickled." Janus reacted. Patton nodded his head up and down as he felt his blushing cheeks grow a darker shade of red. "Well unfortunately, I care about your ability to breath more than you appear to. So, I'm gonna give you a bit of a break." Janus told him before lessening his tickles.
Upon being given a chance to breath, Patton actually began whining a little bit. It was like Patton had just been told he had to go to bed while he was playing! It was quite adorable and amusing to hear a near 30 year old whine like a toddler. But nonetheless, Patton did take a few minutes to breath and make up for the lost oxygen. "That's right...get your oxygen back. You're gonna need it." Janus said to Patton with a smirk.
He gave Patton's belly a little tickle for encouragement. Patton giggled and leaned the back of his head against Janus's chest for a while. "Say...Is your neck ticklish by any chance?" Janus asked.
Patton nodded his head. "Yeah! Yes it is." Patton replied. Janus smirked almost immediately and began wiggling his top pair of arms on Patton's neck.
Patton squealed. "HEHEhehehehehe! Hahahahahahahahaha! Ihihihihit's tihihihihicklihihihihish! Vehehehery tihihihihicklihihihihish!" Patton giggled, raising his shoulders as he shook his head.
"Oh really? I had no idea. I couldn't tell from all your giggling. I thought you might've been thinking of something funny." Janus teased.
"Buhuhuhuhut, yohohohou're thehehe ohohohohone tihihihicklihihihing mehehehehe!" Patton argued happily.
"Me? Tickling you? Why, I'd do no such thing." Janus teased further. To add to the tickles, Janus began tickling the other, exposed side of his neck. When one side of his neck would become exposed, Janus would tickle it. This was repeated for some time, to keep Patton on his toes.
"Buhuhuhut, yohohohou're dohohohoihihing ihihihit nohohohohow!" Patton argued.
"Doing what? What could I possibly be doing? You have to be specific." Janus told him.
Patton squealed and increased his squirming a little bit. "Yohohohou're tihihihihihicklihihihing mehehehehe! Yohohohou're uhuhuhusihihing yohohohour fihihihingehehehers tohoho tihihihickle mehehehehe!" Patton told him.
Janus lifted an eyebrow before looking at his hands. Suddenly, it all became clear! Janus gasped in pretend surprise. "Oh! Oh my! It would appear you're right!" Janus exclaimed. Patton only continued to giggle happily as he finally 'figured it out'. "Perhaps I should stop." Janus suggested, before stopping his fingers.
Patton's quickly died down, but so did his happiness. As soon as Janus gave him a break, Patton looked at him with sad, hurtful eyes. It was like seeing a puppy who's toy just got stuck under the couch where it can't reach. It managed to create a temporary ocean of sadness inside of you, that could only be cured by continuing to give him what he wants. So what did he do? Janus continued to tickle him on the neck.
"Hahahahaha! HehehEHEHEEEEEEEE! Yahahahahahay!" Patton squealed and giggled with childish glee.
Janus couldn't help but let out a few giggles himself! This was such an adorable scene to watch! Not only was Patton enjoying being tickled, but he was even asking for more! It also seemed even more evident to Janus that Patton cares more about laughter and happiness then his breath and oxygen intake. So throughout the session, Janus has had to give Patton breaks in between runs. But thankfully, Patton didn't complain much at all. If he wasn't subtly pouting, he was taking advantage of the breaks.
For the next few weeks, Janus gave Patton lots of tickle attacks to make up for childhood memories that were never made. And unsurprisingly, tickle fights really helped the two sides get closer together! Patton learned that dark sides can be really fun and forgiving, and Janus learned that light sides can be cute, and really needy at times. But, Janus didn't mind the needy aspect.
Not one bit...

1. Do you like to dance? I like to head bob or move my arms/hands, but that’s about the extent of my dancing. Oh, and I make sad attempts at some TikTok dances lol. I should also mention that this is done solely in the privacy of my home.
2. A song that’s been stuck in your head: WAP by Cardi B ft. Megan Thee Stallion. Particularly one part of the song because of TikTok.
3. Put your music player on shuffle and write the first ten songs that play: 1. My Future by Billie Eilish.  2. Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd. 3. Look At Her Now by Selena Gomez. 4. Bed by J. Holiday. 5. Mercy by Shawn Mendes. 6. My Strange Addiction by Billie Eilish. 7. My Type by Saweetie ft. Jhene Aiko and City Girls. 8. A Place for My Head by Linkin Park. 9. Frontin’ by Pharrell ft. Jay-Z.  10. Roxanne by Arizona Zervas.
4. You’re in a tattoo parlor about to get inked. What are you getting done? I’ve wanted to get “free bird” for several years.
5. What’s something you can see yourself going to jail for? I can’t imagine going to jail.
6. You’re given $10,000…under one condition: you cannot keep the money for yourself. Who would you give it to? My mom.
7. If you had to delete one year of your life completely, which would it be? I think we all could probably get behind deleting 2020.
8. You’re an Action Movie Hero. What’s your weapon of choice and the line you scream when defeating your arch enemy? Hahaha me, an action movie hero.
9. Would you rather be stranded on a desert island with someone you love for ten years or someone you hate for a month? Explain why. I don’t hate anyone, but I imagine having to spend any amount of time with someone I hated would be a nightmare. A month would be better than 10 years, but...gah, being deserted for any amount of time would be horrible.
10. Do you believe in aliens? Why? No.
11. Do you believe in ghosts? I believe in spirits and guardian angels, but not like...Casper-type ghosts. Lol. <<<
12. Have you ever played “Fatal Frame?” Nope. I’ve never even heard of it.

14. Do you keep secrets? Yes.
15. What game systems do you own and what systems have you played on in the past? I have an Nintendo Switch. My brother has a PS4, PS2, Xbox, and Wii, all of which I’ve used before. In the past I’ve also played on the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, PS1, portable Sega, Gameboy Advance... I think that’s it.
16, On consoles, what genre of video games do you prefer? I love Mario Bros. Back in the day I was also super into Spyro and Crash Bandicoot. Most recently I’ve been obsessed with Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Sooo, whatever genre those games are. I guess rpg’s and action-adventure? Racing games like Mario Kart are fun, too. Ooh, a few years ago I got into the Life is Strange series, which according to Google are a “episodic graphic adventure video game.”
17. On the computer, what genre of games do you play? I love The Sims, which fall under life simulation.
18. Which video games’ artworks do you have a book of? None.
19. Apart from glitches, freezing, and crashes, what moments in video games frustrated you the most? Apart from those things, which are super frustrating, having a hard time beating a level and continuously dying are also up there.
20. Which video game characters annoy you? I’m not annoyed by any.

What do you think of that Mario Kart Tour game?
It kind of makes me angry, because there’s some really good ideas in there, but it’s attached to a very crummy mobile game.
And it’s, like, cynically mobile. It’s ten thousand experience meters, some which have caps in order to stop you from playing and come back tomorrow. You can only earn so much EXP, or earn so many coins.
Which is a psychological thing. Habits are hard to break, so they want to turn it in to part of a daily routine. You gotta keep coming back day after day after day until you can’t even remember why you’re still playing it. That’s the point. It’s low-level addiction.
And the currency you use to get pull new characters, “Rubies,” are pretty rare (as is the mobile game style). This isn’t a gentle nudge to get you to spend money, Nintendo is grabbing you by the skull like a bowling ball and they’re ready to throw you into a volcano if you don’t start buying rubies, which if I remember right, shakes out to around $1 = 1 ruby. Of course, mobile games employ tactics to muddy the exact dollar conversion to dodge gambling concerns, so it’s never a direct translation like that, but it’s close enough.
But it does mean that every time you do a gacha pull, you’re spending the equivalent to $3-5. Ironically, one of my starter pulls was Mario, But With A New Hat.
Tumblr media
It also aggressively pushes you to buy in to their stupid Mario Kart Tour subscription service, because every time you get a package of free bonus items (kart parts, etc.) there’s always a little section to the gift where it’s like “if you paid us $5 a month, you’d also get…” And it’s always stuff like free rubies. Great. Pay $5 a month so you only have to grind slightly less to get Mario With a Different Hat.
It also sucks to play, like, in general. It’s shocking to look at the options screen for this game and see how many assists Nintendo built in to this game to make it work in portrait mode. Nintendo games are usually way more thoughtfully designed and polished than to include four different driving assists for a Mario Kart game.
So far, these are the only settings where the game feels halfway playable to me:
Tumblr media
And even then, it can be kind of difficult to stay on the road. Even at the best of times, I find myself over or under-steering constantly, missing coins or struggling to get out of the grass.
Throughout it all, you’re awarded ratings that determine how you unlock new cups going forward. All of them are locked behind star requirements, and you get stars by getting high scores in a race. Score is awarded for things like tricks, successful attacks, grabbing coins, and placing high. You also get score multipliers by chaining actions together.
But quickly you realize that as you progress to further cups, and re-race on the same tracks, getting the same positions when you finish those races, your scores begin to slip. The whole thing is balanced around forcing you to grind out levels so that, again, you don’t blow through anything too quickly. Racing well and placement ultimately doesn’t matter, it’s all just one long, blatantly obvious treadmill.
Can’t have too much fun. It’s not allowed.
The part that makes me angry is just how much content is being wasted on this game. I actually wouldn’t mind collecting all these skins and kart bodies in a proper, real, console Mario Kart game. They made brand new courses specific for Tour, too, and remastered other, older tracks that weren’t present in Mario Kart 8. I want all of that stuff in a Mario Kart game I actually want to play.
youtube
This has more features than Mario Kart 8 does, too. Tour includes ways to maximize limited content by providing arranged variants of existing tracks. So there are “R” and “T” variants of everything. R seems to stand for Reverse, such as Rock Rock Mountain up there, where you drive the entire track in backwards orientation. It’s notable because they had to significantly rework the track to make it work in reverse, making it feel totally new in the process, and the “T” variants do something similar.
And mini game modes! This is the first Mario Kart game since Mario Kart DS to contain non-racing challenge missions, like testing your driving skills by driving through rings, or testing your aim with weapons by hitting goombas scattered around a track.
I would love to see all of this stuff get implemented in a Mario Kart game that’s actually fun to play. Imagine if Mario Kart 8 had “R” and “T” variants of all its 40+ tracks! That would be amazing! My only hope is that somebody back-ports some of this stuff to work with the Cemu version of MK8. I’d at the very least like to play the New York track in a proper version of Mario Kart.

A Helping Hand
Tumblr media
pairing: jungwoo(nct) x female oc
summary: jungwoo is your lab partner that helps you study and get through class.
words: 2.2k
tags: fluff
author’s note: i started writing this a looooong time ago during spring semester when i was taking bio and it isn’t that much, but i’ve been meaning to post it and since we’re in a jungwoo drought i decided why not. i hope you enjoy!
“Mia, your exam,”
Mia smiled politely as her professor handed her results back, looking over the scantron for her overall score. She sighed at the demeaning red 62% written at the bottom. Her paper contributed to the unfortunately large percentage of students that didn’t pass the exam. Mia sat through the rest of the lecture feeling quite disappointed, expecting more out of herself. Considering she had studied the past few nights, she had hoped to at least get a B or something close, not fail the entire exam. She knew science was her weakest subject and this wasn’t the first test she got a bad grade on, but it was the first one she had completely failed. The walk to her lab afterwards made her feel even worse, remembering that she still had a lab quiz to study for.
“Hey, Mia! What’d you get on the exam?” Johnny, a classmate in her lab group asked as he sat next to her. He was an old high school friend of Mia’s that automatically drifted to her since he knew no one else taking the course. They weren’t exactly close, but had enough mutual friends to be comfortable with one another and talk.
“I don’t want to say exactly but… I basically failed,” she frowned.
“Aw, it’s okay! If it makes you feel better, I only got a C- because of the curve,” he laughed at himself. “What about you, Jungwoo?”
Mia glanced at their other groupmate, Jungwoo, who sat in front of her. He was reading today’s pre-lab, prepping for their experiment of the day. He was always fairly quiet, only speaking when it was about their classwork or laughing every now and then at one of Johnny’s jokes. Mia often wondered about him, feeling like he had more to him that no one knew about but she didn’t want to pry into his personal life.
“Oh, I got an 86%. I just missed some of the multiple choice questions,” he said.
“An 86%?! That means you’re part of the like, four people that got their score curved up to an A, right?” Johnny asked in amazement and Jungwoo nodded, making his two peers look at him in awe.
“I could never,” Mia chuckled. “and I actually tried this time!”
“If you need help, I’m in the STEM Center before class every week,” Jungwoo mentioned.
“I have a break right before class, maybe I could meet up with you? Building 3900?”
“Yeah, 3900, right around the corner.” Jungwoo nodded.
“Sounds good, I’ll see you Thursday then!”
Mia was actually excited, happy to have someone she could study with that could help her get on track. It only took a few weeks into the semester for her to notice that studying alone wasn’t the best thing to do, finding herself constantly distracted by her phone or random Youtube videos instead of working on assignments. She never got any work done on her own, and figured that studying with Jungwoo would be a great way to be productive while socializing. She also realized it would be a way to get to know her classmate better, hoping it would allow her to see how he is outside of lab.
Two days later, Mia walked into the cafeteria to grab breakfast after her morning class as part of her weekly routine. She took her phone out to scroll through her contacts, stopping once she saw the name ‘Jungwoo(Bio)’.
‘Hi! Are you in the STEM center already?’
‘Yeah, I’m in the far left corner by the long tables. I can save you a seat if you want.’
‘That’d be great, thanks :-)’
Mia grabbed her toasted bagel and cream cheese before heading to Building 3900, just across the main science building. She had never actually been inside the building before, never really finding a reason to since she hadn’t taken a science class since high school. She made sure she signed in at the front desk computer before looking around, spotting the tall boy in the back corner like he said.
“Hi Jungwoo,” she greeted him, setting her things down onto the table.
“Oh, hi.” he gave her a small smile, looking up from his textbook. He was in the middle of highlighting a word, labeling it with a definition.
“Wow, you actually bought the textbook? She said it wasn’t required,”
“Yeah, she said that after I already ordered it so I figured I might as well use it. It’s actually pretty helpful,” he said. “Did you need help studying anything specific?”
“Um…” she paused, feeling a bit embarrassed. “I kinda need help with everything, really.”
“That’s okay,” he chuckled. “I’m here to help.”
Mia thanked him as he handed her his notes, showing her what was going to be on the next exam in the current chapter they were learning about. She noticed how neat everything was, from his handwriting to the way he organized all of his papers.
“You’re so organized,”
“Yeah, my roommate gets a little bothered by it sometimes, but it’s just a habit.” he said after she pointed out everything.
“Roommate?”
“I live with my friend Doyoung in the apartments just a few blocks away. My parents are always gone on business trips so I decided moving in somewhere with a friend would be less lonely.”
“Makes sense. Do you work?”
“I do, I work at a pet store not too far from here.”
Mia nodded as she listened, gradually learning more about Jungwoo as the study session went on. They’d go back and forth asking questions as they went through their notes, both of them slowly beginning to open up as time went on. After a while the two noticed the clock said 1PM and began to gather their things, heading to class together.
This became a weekly schedule for them, Mia always meeting up with Jungwoo to study and hangout. It had gotten to the point where they would even meet up outside of campus, finding time between their schedules to study together at nearby cafes. Jungwoo quickly became someone Mia found comfort in, constantly reassuring her that she was doing great in school and helping her through difficult assignments or quizzes.
“Hey, are you two like… a thing?” Johnny nudged Mia’s arm one day during lab, Jungwoo on the other side of the room collecting samples.
“No, we’re not. Why?”
“I don’t know, you two seem pretty close now. Hanging out before class, studying with each other every week, sharing food. I wouldn’t be surprised if you guys ever got together,” he shrugged, going back to writing in his lab manual. “you guys would be cool as a couple.”
“What’s happening?” Jungwoo said as he sat back down, placing a beaker onto the table.
“Nothing, just asking Mia why you guys aren’t in love yet,”
“Good question,” Jungwoo laughed before going back to work.
Johnny raised an eyebrow at Mia, making her blush. She had to admit, Jungwoo was a handsome guy. He was tall, had a cute smile, a joyful laugh. She would often catch herself looking up at him during their study sessions, admiring his good looks. It was just an added bonus to his kindness, Mia appreciating how much he’s helped her this entire semester.
“Hey, Jungwoo, can I ask you something?” she said to him as they walked to the student parking lot after class like usual.
“Go ahead,” he said, swinging his keys around his finger.
“Are you free tonight?” she asked, knowing he didn’t have another class and it was his day off of work. She wouldn’t be surprised if he said no considering how tired he must be, but even if it was for just a little bit, she hoped that she could get some kind of quality time with him without having to look at the chemical equation of photosynthesis.
“I am actually, why? Did you need help with anything else this chapter?” he looked at her obliviously.
“No, I was just wondering... if you wanted to hangout? Not study, but go out or something?” she stopped in front of her car, looking up at him for an answer.
“I’m down to hangout, what were you thinking of doing?” he said causing Mia to pause for a bit, slightly panicking because she didn’t expect to get that answer from him.
“Um… I don’t know, to be honest. Do you want to go watch a movie?”
“Sure,”
The two agreed on meeting at Jungwoo’s for a movie night, not wanting to spend money on an actual movie at the theaters. Mia trusted him offering his place to hangout, everything she’s learned about him allowing her to enter his apartment with ease.
She looked around with curious eyes as she set her stuff down on the couch, in awe at how clean and cozy his home was. The tables were clear, floor clean, shoes lined up neatly near the door. She observed the frames on the wall, seeing pictures of Jungwoo and his roommate together with their friends or family. She figured the two must have a close friend group, every picture including the same amount of people.
“Doyoung’s home but he’s probably napping or watching a drama,” Jungwoo mentioned. They settled on a Studio Ghibli film to watch after grabbing some snacks out of the pantry, sitting on the couch in the living room. Jungwoo sat on one side, Mia on the other. There was a comfortable silence all throughout the movie, both of them only making small comments at their favorite parts. Mia would glance at him every now and then only to see him focused on the movie, fully immersed into the plot. She began to wonder if she was just overthinking, letting Johnny’s words get to her head. She was just another classmate, a simple friend. There wasn’t much else to their relationship, nothing else could happen.
Soon enough the movie was over, the end credits scrolling across the screen. The clock on the wall only read 8:04pm, Mia thinking it was still too early for her to go home.
“Question,” Mia eyed the Nintendo Switch stood in front of the TV. “do you have Mario Kart?”
“Maybe,” Jungwoo grinned and Mia laughed before getting up to grab a controller, ready to beat him in every race.
The two spent the rest of that night playing Mario Kart and other multiplayer games, the room full of playful banter and yells. Mia found herself practically sprawled across the couch while Jungwoo sat on the floor in front of her, both of them concentrated on the bright screen in front of them. It was around 11:30 when she began to doze off, driving her bike off of the Rainbow Road course several times before falling asleep.
Mia woke up the next day in silence, the TV turned off and a Snoopy patterned blanket laid across her. She checked her phone to see that it was only 7:54am, a little earlier than she’d usually wake up.
“Oh, good morning,” Jungwoo turned around in the kitchen to spot her awake, placing a bagel onto a plate. “Cream cheese?”
Mia smiled as she nodded, acknowledging how he remembered a detail from her usual breakfast meal.
“Sorry for falling asleep on your couch, I meant to go home before midnight.”
“It’s okay, I really liked spending time with you,” he said and she blushed, remembering how he would high five or hug her whenever they passed a level in Super Mario Bros. They were small gestures, but considering they were never that physically close before, Mia enjoyed it all.
Mia headed to the bathroom to freshen up, opening the bathroom door to walk back to the kitchen only to bump into a tall figure.
“Oh, sorry! I didn’t think you were still here,” Doyoung apologized, letting her walk ahead of him.
“It’s okay,” she smiled politely before sitting next to Jungwoo at the dining table.
“Doyoung, this is Mia. She’s from my-“
“Yeah, yeah, I know. Your class, you talk about her all the time,” Doyoung waved his hand before heading towards the front door. “I’ll be at Jeno’s if you need me, bye! Nice meeting you Mia!”
Once the door shut Mia’s eyes darted to Jungwoo, whose cheeks turned red. He was looking down at his plate of food shyly, embarrassed at his roommate’s words.
“So, you talk about me?” she teased, taking a bite of her bagel. Jungwoo just laughed, struggling to make eye contact with her.
“I do talk about you, to be honest. I talk a lot about you,” he said. “you’re cute to me.”
Now Mia was the one blushing, taken aback by the sudden confession. She expected Jungwoo to only look at her as a friend, not get ratted out by his roommate that she had just met.
“I think you’re cute too, Jungwoo.”
The two continued to eat their breakfast like that, sharing shy giggles and quick eye contact. They weren’t sure as to how to go on with their mutual crushes on each other, both too scared to make the first move.
“Do you work today?” Mia asked as they washed the dishes together, standing side by side.
“I do, I work 12-8pm,” he nodded.
“I’ll pick you up at 8:30?”
“Yeah, that’d be nice. Another movie?” Jungwoo suggested. Mia agreed and the two grinned, carrying on with the dishes.

My Studyblr Intro
27 Feb 2020
Greetings fellow learning peoples
Hi! I’m Hannah, or Han, or if you are 5 years old and my cousin I suppose Han-Han is good as well?
So, as I understand it, intros are important because who doesn’t want a long list of random information about a person on the internet you are entirely unlikely to ever actually meet.
... I mean, so, I love intro posts just not when they’re about me
ANYWAYYYYYY let us get to the point
Main ”Important” Information :
- I’m Hannah (as noted above but if you skipped over my rambling tirade above here you go)
- INTP-T
- I am a Freshman in College! Spring 2020 is my first semester (andddd I just realized I wrote 2019 in all of my journals)
- I go to Community College but plan to transfer after completing my first 2 years and pre-requisites. I am considering English when I transfer but that is likely subject to change at any given moment.
- This semester I am taking, English 101, College Algebra, and Intro to Anthropology. Just 3 classes to ease myself back into school life after a 2-year gap between high school and college.
- I was diagnosed with ADHD 6 or so months ago? And wow...It’s been a process. On one hand, I finally understand why I am the way I am (i.e I’m not actually a lazy worthless piece of shit) on the other I have to actually acknowledge my symptoms and find ways to still function and not just sweep everything under the rug and pretend I’m fine...so that’s fun!!! (Not that the whole sweep it under the rug thing was working for me anyway but, when you live 20 years of your life like that it's hard to change even if the change is good)
Things I like to do :
- Read! I freaking love reading! I might not do it as much as I should but I am trying to get back into the swing of reading. I am currently reading The City of Brass and Gold by S.A. Chakraborty and I freaking love it. It takes place in 18th century Cairo (and later as I understand a fantasy world) and the main character has mysterious and unexplained (le gasp) powers and there are Djinn involved and I really have only read like 50 pages? But 20/10 I highly recommend to anyone who likes fantasy.
- Write! I love writing. I have been since I was maybe 8 and made plays for my friends and me to act out during recess. Nowadays I write fantasy novels...mostly for fun. I guess one day I would be interested in being published but we shall see.
- Play Games! I got into gaming outside of the occasional Mario-kart/lego insert franchise here spree maybe 2 years ago. I really like Fantasy RPGs (The Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age, The Witcher) - My current game obsession is the Elder Scrolls Online!
- Talk about starting a garden or learning to sew! - One day my friends, one day.
- Hike! - I love pretty much every aspect of nature. It is so beautiful and I cannot think of a better way to experience our earth’s beauty than to take a hike! 10/10 I highly recommend it. It also gets me out of my headspace and helps me calm down my racing thoughts!
- Cook and Bake! - I love making food. I find it really relaxing and calming and it is probably the only part of my life where I display time-management skills. I don’t really have a preference for specific things I like to make other than that I am a pescetarian so no meat for me. However, I have been recently experimenting with bread making.
What I Plan to Post :
Keyword Plan
- Study Related Content including my notes, tips, and tricks I pick up on my college journey, books I am reading, things that happened in class...etc
- Tips I have found that help with my ADHD regarding studying or honestly just life in general.
- Updates on what I am reading/writing
- Life Updates
- Misc. - i.e whatever I want
...and that’s that. I feel like this is obnoxiously long so I apologize for that ahead of time. In any case! Feel free to message me or say hi! I am super awkward but I really do enjoy chatting with people!
Also, I am going to tag @emmastudies because when I was thinking about making a studyblr I found her post on how to start a studyblr and it really helped me have a general idea of where to begin! So thanks so much!

What is your favorite thing to do on your phone? Tweeting, looking at my photos, or more recently, playing Mario Kart Tour hehe. Do you know what you are going to be for Halloween this year? If so, what? I dunno if we have plans for Halloween this year. I don’t really want to spend my money on a costume either. Do you still go trick-or-treating, and if so, how old are you? I do it for some years. I think the last time my friends and I did it though was 2015. Gabie’s sisters trick-or-treated last 2017, but we just accompanied them.
Which Disney princess resembles you the most? Physically? Moana would probably be the closest. Which fairytale seems closest to your life story? I don’t really like fairytales so I don’t know enough of them to identify which one I could possibly relate to.
What color was your first phone? It came in a red Winnie the Pooh skin when my parents got it for me. Was your first phone a flip phone? Nah it was the old Nokia 3310. My third phone was a Sony Ericsson flip phone. Have you ever butt dialed someone? Nope, but I’ve called people in my sleep haha. What is your favorite pizza parlor? Pizza parlors aren’t a thing here; we just have Italian restaurants in general. My favorite place that serves Italian food is Mama Lou’s. What is an old website that closed down that you miss? TWITPIC. I posted so many photos there from 5th grade which was my favorite year of elementary school. I have no idea how to retrieve them since the site shut down around five years ago. I’d be happy even to find out my pictures just floating somewhere around the internet; I just don’t want them gone forever. If you're a girl, have you ever had an embarrassing period story? Yeah, I was in PE class two months ago and was doing sit-ups when my partner looked at me nervously and she said I had a huge stain on my shorts. I had to do the rest of the workout in denim, ripped jeans. ...If so, what happened? ^ That. What was your worst experience in high school? Not having friends and struggling to know who I was and what I wanted. What was your high school's mascot? Meh my school doesn’t have one. How much did your senior prom dress cost you? A few thousand bucks. I didn’t take my prom seriously so I didn’t want my parents to shell out too much for my dress. Do you listen to Grace VanderWaal? I know a couple of songs of hers and I admire her, but I’m not a rabid fan. ...if yes, what's your favorite song of hers? The song she sang at her AGT audition has always struck me. I think I’ve cried every time I came across it. Do you watch America's Got Talent? Nah I only watch the really viral ones and the golden buzzer bits. Which country has the best accent? I can’t distinguish or identify English accents but I reeeeally like the way Tanya Burr sounds when she speaks. That’s an accent I really like. Oh and the one Claire Foy uses in The Crown; I’m not sure if that’s her natural accent but anyhow that one sounds pleasant too. Which country's flag do you like the best? The ones that go outside the box, like Nepal and Switzerland. Libya’s old flag (all-green, no design) was a bit interesting too. Did you cry at your high school graduation? No. I cried the days before. By the time of my grad I think I was just elated to finally finish high school and excited to finally be out with Gab. Did you cry at your college graduation (if applicable)? I haven’t reached that point yet but I have a strong feeling I’ll be trying not to cry the whole time, because my dad plans to be there and he’s never been to any of my graduations yet. Do your parents try to stop you from chasing your dreams? No. I know they support me so long as they know I can handle whatever it is I want to attain. What dreams have stuck with you since childhood? Going to the moon, fighting a fire, having a job that involves caring for animals. Oh and stepping in a wrestling ring. Who is a former friend that you wish would come back into your life? Sofie. She’s still a friend, but I’ve seen her like twice in the last three years. Sad, considering how ridiculously close we were in high school. Have you ever been in a serious romantic relationship? Yes. Who was your favorite Spice Girl? Uh I was too young to ever be a big fan. Did you ever want to be in a band or music group? I wanted to learn how to play the drums, but I didn’t actively aspire to take up a career in music or be in a band. What instrument did you play in the marching band? If you could take any one type of dance class right now, what kind you take? I’d love to go back to ballet. Who got kicked off of your favorite talent show that you were mad about? Pia Toscano and Siobhan Magnus from American Idol, without a doubt. Do you own the entire series on DVD of any TV show? If so, what? My dad got me Seasons 1 and 2 and a bootleg pack of Seasons 3-8 of Perfect Strangers. What show did you always want to be on when you were a kid? Hi-5!!! I always wanted to be a part of that crowd of dancing kids. I had no idea they shot everything in Australia, and that just because they air the show in the Philippines doesn’t mean the studio is also located here. Can you tell the difference between Mary-Kate and Ashley? No, I never paid that much attention to them. I know they dress nicely though. Who is your favorite set of twins? Les Twins! They’re Laurent and Larry, dancers who’ve performed with Beyoncé for the last several years. What is the stupidest baby name you have heard recently? Stupid is kinda harsh...but a weird name I’ve heard of would be Luckysia. I can’t even begin to think where that came from. What is the grossest thing you have ever vomited up? OMG I dunno...straight-up vodka, I guess? I don’t look at the things I throw up lmao. Have you ever thrown up in public, in front of someone else? Yep. ...If yes, was it embarrassing? Very. I haven’t gotten that drunk since. Did you ever take your dog to school? No as pets aren’t allowed in my school. Name one person you know who had a baby in high school. I don’t have a batchmate who gave birth while in high school, but there are several who have since had kids while in college. If you had had a baby in high school, what would you have named him or her? I’d probably have named a girl Audrey and a boy Gino, because those were my favorites back then. I still like the name Audrey but now I’m not so sure if I’d still want it as a first name for my kid. If you had a baby now, what would you name him or her? Olivia. Dunno what name I’d pick for a boy. Do you make lists of names that you like? Yes, but it’s a list for girl names only hah. Do you keep a list of your favorite quotes? Nope, I don’t like living by quotes. Describe your dream wedding in three words. Lots of: flowers, people, food. What is your favorite Chinese restaurant? The Shang Palace in Makati Shangri-La. Does Chinese food make you feel sick? Nope. It’s part of our culture so it would be unusual to get sick from Chinese food. I know it spoils quick, though. Have you ever seen someone throw up on a plane? Nah I’ve only seen that in Mr. Bean haha. I’ve seen more people get dizzy and throw up in boats/ships. Do you get motion sickness? Yes, mostly in cars, and especially if it isn’t my parents driving. Has God ever healed you of anything? If so, what? Do you believe in God? Do you pray, and if so, to whom? What is the most boring church you have ever attended? All of them. What is the most lively church you have ever attended? Do you find church fun or boring? Boring as fuck, but that’s because I’m a nonbeliever and am only forced to go because my mom is a crazily devout Catholic who makes sure her whole family catches church every Sunday. When was the last time you went to a church service? Last Sunday. When did you learn to ride a bike? I never learned :( A couple of years ago my dad tried to teach me and I was able to retain my balance for like three seconds, but I was never able to repeat it. What do you hate the most about summer? When it gets too boring it’s usually easier to fall into depression or negative thoughts in general. What is your favorite thing to do in a swimming pool? Just float in the water and relax. Which part of your body is the most muscular? I don’t know. Do you like sugar skulls? I’ve never encountered those before, so no.  Have you ever painted a sugar skull on your face? Nope. Are you an artist? I am not. Did you ever take Latin in school? No, but we were briefly taught French in Grade 1 because my school's origins is in France. They didn’t keep up the lessons, though. What was the last race you ran called? Idk, does Mario Kart on my phone count? Hahaha Do you prefer to run in the street or on the sidewalk? I prefer to...not run at all. Which major holiday is closest to your birthday? Easter Sunday, typically. Does your zodiac sign fit your personality at all? I don’t care. What is your zodiac sign? Taurus.

summary: Thais Bolton lives in the OASIS. Well, sort of. Her dream is to one day live in the OASIS as Brandewyn with her best friend Wade. But he’s more concerned with the three keys James Halliday left behind after his death. The two of them embark on a familiar journey through the OASIS to save it from corporate assholes who want to take it away.

My nose wrinkled back at the smells of 2045 Ohio. After all of this time, one would think I had gotten used to the rotten food, the spreading rust, and the chemical fumes surrounding me in every step; but, no. Every morning I still wished that I could smell fresh air for once, see the sun as it once was, and run in the grass. My parents would tell me stories of them chasing each other in the meadows, pushing each other on a swing roped to a large tree branch, and watching the clouds when they got tired. But then they moved here. Well, really everyone did. Ohio was the place to be once the OASIS opened.
All of my life I’ve lived in the OASIS. Every day was the same. I got out of bed, got dressed, and headed out for the day. When I walked out of the house, I noticed that Wade had already left, the rope tethered down to the first level. From the ground, he was waving at me, inviting me to join him. Like my parents, Wade and I had been friends since we were born. My parents knew Wade’s before they died, and they even offered to take him in, but his Aunt Alice wanted to look after him. Unlike my parents, however, we didn’t have some epic love story about love at first sight and growing up with your soulmate attached to the hip. Instead, Wade and I were just close friends. And I promised myself that I would never tell him that I wanted more.
I grabbed at the rope, and slowly lowered myself towards Wade. As I got closer, I could see his disheveled dark brown hair more clearly, and his index finger pressing the bridge of his glasses further up on his nose. Another thing we shared, our poor eyesight. Wade had these terribly small glasses with no frame, while I had big glasses with large white frames. He teased me about it, saying I looked like I was from the 70’s. Just a decade shy of what he considered to be the best decade of all time. Wade was obsessed with everything 80’s, and that was mostly to do with his obsession with Halliday. His fascination showed by his badly stained Star Wars: A New Hope white t-shirt. He tried to hide the embarrassing stains under a blue flannel, but I knew that shirt well enough. I had bought it for his birthday a few years ago.
As I tethered the rope, I listened to Wade dig the toe of his shoe into the dirt while he waited impatiently. I rolled my eyes at him. It wasn’t like he had to wait for me. He always chose to wait. I kicked his shin playfully before walking past him. Wade shook his ankle out as he hopped after me. “Morning to you, too, sour pants,” he joked. I responded with a fake laugh. “So, what’s your plan today?”
I looked at Wade, watching as his hands gripped onto his backpack straps to keep it high on his shoulders. In the OASIS you could do anything you wanted. Dancing, singing, racing, sports, shooter games, etc. You name it, Halliday created it. “I dunno,” I told him. “Probably join the race.” That was something I hardly ever did. I left that kind of stuff to Wade and Aech because they were always better at it than I was.
First time I ever raced, I nearly zero’d out; and if it weren’t for Wade, I would have. Thing was, I had just gotten past the dinosaur when an IOI car rammed into mine, sending me spinning into a brick wall. The car was totalled, and more IOI cars were approaching, I’d be hit again, and zero’d out. When I tried to jump out of the car, I found my legs stuck. I couldn’t move. My heart was racing in my chest, and I kept glancing over my shoulder to watch the cars getting closer. All I could do was keep trying to pull my legs out of the wreck, and scream for help. In the craziness of it all, I hadn’t even noticed that Wade turned around to come get me.
Too close for comfort, I would tell Wade every time he encouraged me to give it another try. So, I thought that I would never try the race again. But what else was I going to do to pass the time?
The rest of our walk was quiet— unusually quiet. But it was close to Wade’s parents’ anniversary, so I tried not to pry. When we got to the junkyard, Wade went to his bus, and I went to mine. Wade was first to discover the junkyard as a great place to hide out all day, so he got the bigger bus. Coincidentally, there were only two buses there, but they were on opposite sides of the pile of trashed cars.
I had only been in Wade’s bus a couple of times because he claimed that it was his “sacred place”. I didn’t blame him, though, for not wanting anyone to invade his privacy, I didn’t want that either. The few times I had been in there, iti was to help him look over some new information he found about Halliday. His entire bus was covered with news clippings, magazine covers, posters, pictures— everything Halliday.
We weren’t separated for long, of course. Once I was logged into the OASIS, I tracked down Z, who last logged off at the Halliday’s Journals. A friend of mine named Soyzie passed me, she was wearing her famous Rosalina from Mario Kart skin. Everyone on the track knew her because it was nearly impossible to get Rosaline, yet she did.
“Brandewyn!” she called after me, her blue dress flowing behind her.
I turned towards the tracks to look at her. Alright, I’ll be honest. No one played Mario Kart anymore… unless you were under the age of twelve. The two exceptions were myself and Soyzie. Both of us had a rough time at Halliday’s race, so we found comfort in the little kid’s sport which we dominated. “Hey, Soy,” I high fived her. She asked if I was staying for the next race, claiming that Black Power Ranger, as we knew him, was back. He was our only true competitor, but he loved to troll us. “No, I’m actually meeting up with a friend of mine. I’m gonna give Halliday’s race another shot.” Soyzie looked shocked. “I know, but someone has to get that key, right?”
Soyzie nodded, “Have fun,” she waved as racers dressed in Mario and Pokemon outfits lined up.
When I arrived at Halliday’s Journals, Z was waiting for me at the portal. “Wasn’t sure if you’d actually come.” I shrugged. “You’ll be fine. Just bail if something’s wrong.” Z put a hand on my shoulder, “Aech can fix a car, not a zero’d out player.”
As we jumped through the portal together, we found ourselves in the midst of complete chaos. Sixers were marching in their ordered lines, and there were few Gunters left, so they filled the other spots. At the front we found Aech standing proudly with his monster truck. It was infamous on the race track for squashing other cars underneath its large tires. For the most part, Aech only tried to get the Sixers, but there was always the one unfortunate noob who thought it would be smart to go under him.
Next to his large truck was an empty spot. Him and Z shared a handshake, “I saved a spot for you,” he said to his best friend. Then he looked to me, “Sorry, Brandy, didn’t know you were coming.”
“That’s alright, Aech, I’ll head to the back. Probably safer, anyhow.” Both boys nodded in agreement. As Z was about to set up his car in the free spot, he froze. “What is it?”
Z shook his head, “I have to go in the back. You can have this spot, Brandy.”
“Oh, man, really?” Aech laughed, “You have to steal gas coins from zero’d Sixers. That’s a new low, even for you.” Z hit Aech’s large arm.
Aech pretended to be hurt, whining like a baby, while I set up my car in the front spot. Quietly, Z walked away from us. I only had two cars, the one from my old racing days, and my Mario Kart bike. There’s only one rule amongst my friends at the Kart tracks, bikes only. Everyone knows that bikes are better than cars, only the little kids used karts. But that bike wouldn’t survive this track. That bike was used to dodging banana peels, not wrecking balls; and skidding along paved tracks, not normal streets. There was only one other option.
As the car set up, I thought about how Aech fixed it for me after the wreck. It was totalled, but with Aech’s mods and coins, he made do. The car was a GTA based maroon Jester sports car with the number 53 on the sides, and the number 8 on the hood. The 53 was obviously based on Herbie the love bug, but it also represents feeling free to do what you think is right even when the world is telling you no. That number is on the sides to remind me to stay grounded and level headed. The number 8 represents power, which is why it’s on the hood of the car.
I opened the car door, and jumped in. Every sound set my teeth on edge, the engines revving and the cheering from Gunters were just a few small examples. But the minute the light turned from red to yellow, nothing else was on my mind except getting to that finish line. No fucking this up. I thought to myself just before the light turned green and green fireworks shot into the sky. At the same time, everyone pressed on the gas pedal and we were off. Aech, having a heavy truck, started a bit slower, but sped up.
Off the bat, Sixer cars were crashing all over the place, and we weren’t even off the bridge. Old Gunter friends of mine were catching up to me. And soon I had to start weaving through the sea of Sixer and Gunter cars. I pushed my car as much as I could, eyeing the broken, twisted ramps ahead. Everything was moving fast— faster than I ever recalled. Against the wheel, my hands were shaking, and my palms were sweaty against the leather.
One by one, cars flew off the ramps; and some crashed, while others made it across. My grip tightened, and my foot pressed harder on the gas, and then I just prayed. For a fleeting moment, it was peaceful. I didn’t have to weave, curse other drivers who cut me off, or worry about any upcoming obstacle. I was free flying through the air, and then the car dropped back onto the track on the other side of the jump. I cheered loudly as I made a sharp left turn.
“Guys, are you seeing this?” Z asked myself and Aech. I didn’t know what he was talking about, but Aech did. He described a bike from Akira, a movie I had seen only about a thousand times. And then I realized who he was describing.
My eyes shot wide, “Art3mis is here?!” I exclaimed.
Aech scoffed, “No way is it her.”
“No, I have seen all of her Twitch streams, read all of her blog posts. It’s her.”
“Where are you guys, anyways?” I asked while driving under a bridge. Around the next corner would be the obstacles before where I crashed last time.
Z sounded like he was in a struggle as he spoke, “Just landed off the ramps. Where are you?”
I looked ahead. Swinging from the sky, seemingly attached to nothing, gigantic wrecking balls rained down upon us. To my right, a Gunter got scooped away by one, coins falling from where they once were. I didn’t think twice before collecting the coins. I looked around to see who my nearest competition was, thinking it would be a Sixer, but I saw no one. Just in case, I looked in the rear view mirror. Nothing. Over my shoulders. Nothing. What the hell? I thought to myself.
I jumped the construction sight small ramp with ease, and started to slow my speed. I didn’t mean to, it was just instinct. Ahead, there was China Town, where I crashed last time. If my heart wasn’t pounding hard enough in my chest from adrenaline, it was about to explode from anxiety. In my stomach, I felt a pit growing like I was about to puke. My breathing was short and wavering, and my eyes started to water. “I can’t to it…” I muttered as I bailed. Just before I reached the trigger for the T-Rex, I came to a halt, my brakes shaking under my shoot, and the tires tried to grab the ground as I skidded to a stop.
“What are you talking about?” Z asked worriedly.
A Sixer car zoomed past me, triggered the T-Rex who picked up the grey car and crushed it between its large teeth. “I can’t pass the dinosaur,” I said as more cars started passing me. It hadn’t even occurred to me that the Akira bike had passed me, and then the Back to the Future car passed me. My head hit the steering wheel, the siren sounded like a whisper compared to loud clamor of cars and roars from the T-Rex. “I’m sorry…”
“It’s okay,” Z said, determination now ringing in his voice.
“I had to bail to,” Aech added angrily. Then his voice cheered, “Go! Go! You got it! Go, Z!” The way he was cheering, it sounded like Z was about to win, and I wasn’t even there.
Suddenly, it didn’t seem like I needed to worry about that. “Shit…” Z growled. “Art3mis isn’t going to make it,” he said. “King Kong will zero her out.” Quiet. “Bail!” he shouted at someone. “Bail!”
I put the car in reverse and started slowly heading back to the start where we would always meet up after bad races— and all of them were bad races. I waited for Z and Aech, sitting on the hood of my car, playing on my in-game Gameboy. In the real world you could never find old technology, it was really hard and expensive. But in the Oasis, I had three Gameboy’s, two of which were customs. It was weird to be playing a video game inside of a video game at first, but I got used to it, and it’s how I started passing the time.
More and more Gunters trudged back with low health and their damaged vehicles pocketed. Some were drinking healing potions and putting “bandages” on for more health. Others, who had nothing, slowly let their health come back. In the exodus, I saw Aech’s giant avatar next to two smaller avatars. I recognized one as Perzival, and the other as the Art3mis.
As the neared, I pocketed the Jester after dismounting it, and greeted the three of them with a smile. Z was glowing with excitement, and Aech was rolling his eyes at every other word. “Oh!” Z exclaimed, “This is my friend Brandewyn,” he said it like I was an afterthought before continuing on his nerd rant. I couldn’t blame him, though. Who could? He was meeting one of the greatest OASIS streamers, someone he aspired to be like.
I cleared my throat to grab their attention. “I’m headed out. But I wanted to give this to you, Aech.” I threw the miniature figure of my car at him.
He caught it and looked at me, bewildered. “The Jester?” he questioned with both excitement and disbelief. I nodded. “You’re giving me the Jester? Are you sure?”
“I’m sure. My Copper Key Race days are over. I figured if anyone was going to take good care of it, it would be you, Aech. Treat her well or I’ll cut your balls off in the real world.” I laughed as I waved goodbye and took my OASIS visor off, Z saying something about wanting me to stay. I didn’t hear him.

Top Films, TV and Games 2018
Films
Tumblr media
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (10) My one word review for this film was 'Perfection'. I've never in my life see such a perfectly crafted animation film or... film in general, really. Every single shot looked stunning. This, combined with the excellent story and characters, the incredible voice acting, the way they managed to fit seven (SEVEN!) Spider hero characters into it without it feeling crowded, and the amazing Miles Morales origin story means that it has to be my choice for number one film this year.
Tumblr media
Mission Impossible Fallout (10) My second only 10/10 rated film this year, the sixth installment of the series was the best yet, an intense rollercoaster ride that left me barely able to breathe. Of course, the set pieces are the most important factor here; the suspense created by them has never been more thrilling. However, I loved the character moments too, particularly the slow but meaningful development between Ethan and Ilsa. I can't imagine how they're going to top this film next time.
Tumblr media
Bohemian Rhapsody (9) Biopics are some of my favourite films and rank highly on my top films list on a regular basis (think The Theory of Everything, my top film of 2014). Bohemian Rhapsody was a powerful window into Freddie Mercury's public and private life. The Live Aid scene in particular had me in tears the whole way through, I couldn't have stopped them if I wanted to. It was the perfect culmination to the film. The cast was also amazing, but particularly Rami Malek at Freddie. The way he embodied every aspect of Freddie's personality was amazing to watch and I hope that he gets recognition past the great reviews about his performance.
Tumblr media
A Simple Favor (9) This film was wickedly entertaining and all engrossing. I've never seen a mystery quite like it. The advertising leading up to its release was particularly important, enough to entice you without giving anything away. I wasn't surprised about the ending, hence the nine rather than a ten, but I was satisfied. Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively in particular gave stand out performances, although I fully endorse the use of Henry Golding as the handsome husband/boyfriend at every opportunity -- he's great.
Tumblr media
Crazy Rich Asians (8) Considering I don't have much time to get to the cinema these days, the fact that I saw Crazy Rich Asians three times has to say something! It is without a doubt the most fun film I saw this year. I loved the decadence of it all, from the settings to the grand romance. Of course I appreciated that it was a full Asian cast, as it showed Hollywood that making films based solely around a different culture works, even if it has a Westernized skew to it. But what I really adored was the women in this film, they took center stage, each which different personalities, stories and motives. I'd really love to see more of that in the future.
TV
Tumblr media
Altered Carbon (9) I've watched Altered Carbon three times. In a year where I've been short on time and have struggled to watch/play things, this alone should explain why it has taken my number one spot. Science fiction is one of my favourite genres, it has been since I was a kid. I've watched a lot of different sci-fi over the years, but when something really commits to it, even if it makes it complicated, I really love that, particularly if it is based on believable science (like in the Star Trek review). Altered Carbon was an amazing blend of intelligent writing, fantastic acting and a compelling story. A must watch for anyone who enjoys this genre like I do.
Tumblr media
Star Trek Discovery (9) Star Trek has taken many forms over the years, but this has to be one of my favourites so far. The way it embraces science makes me giddy with excitement, much like the Martian did back in 2015. They then take this science and weave it into an compelling, sometimes heart-rending story which has proven to be a stellar series of the franchise for me. I particularly love the crew and how different they all are, that diversity in terms of personality is what I strive for in my own writing and I'm so happy to see it here.
Tumblr media
Final Space (9) Whew. I did not understand what I was getting myself into when I pressed play on this show on Netflix earlier this year. I watched pretty much the whole season in one day. It was the effed up hilarity of it all that drew me in, but it was the characters and the legitimately emotional journey behind it all that made me stay. I was really impressed with this, I can't wait for more. CHOOKITY!
Tumblr media
One Day at a Time (9) If a show can make you cry every episode, it automatically gets high marks. The great thing about One Day at a Time is that it also backs up the powerful, emotional issues it deals with each time with some of the most hilarious jokes week in, week out. The family dynamic is brilliant, Schneider included, and the way they handle the aforementioned issues in a balanced, sensitive way is wonderful. It makes it feel like their family is real, despite the sitcom style, which is so hard to do. I really love it and I'm so looking forward to season three!
Tumblr media
GLOW S2 (9) I've never been very good at articulating why I love this show. I mow through every episode I'm given with very little thought as to why. It's incredibly watchable; I think a large part of that is down to the characters and cast, but also the quirkiness of it all. I also find the relationship between Ruth and Sam really compelling, whatever form it takes. I'm still very much looking forward to a third season.
Games
Tumblr media
Batman: The Enemy Within (10) I originally gave this game a nine, if memory serves, right after my first play through. However, once I played the other storyline to the game, I saw how damn freakin' good it truly is. For the first time in a Telltale game, I witnessed the devastating effects that my choices could have on the characters, particularly John. Some of the end scenes in both versions are utterly heart wrenching and it shows perfectly the twisted dynamic a hero can have with his villains. I can heartily recommend playing both this game and the first series; if you love Batman, it's so worth your time.
Tumblr media
Detroit: Become Human (8) This game is exactly what I needed this year, totally story driven and no more than 12 hours long for a play through. It kept making me want to go back and play more whenever I had time, which a lot of games haven't been able to do the last 12 months. The graphics are incredible and the plot itself can be really engrossing, particularly when you get behind the characters. I really loved Connor, I totally understand why Bryan Dechart has such a huge following now. He had the most compelling story line for me (helped by his interaction with Hank, who was also amazing) and acted the role so well. I have played through the game a second time and was able to follow as many different paths as possible, sometimes even forsaking my own conscience, which is hard for me to do! But I have no motivation to complete all the different paths, which is where I think it falls down for me. If you like games like Telltale games, then I would say this is a good choice for you.
Tumblr media
Spider-man (8) The thing I loved most about Spider-man was its story. If you can write something that will make grown men cry on stream, without shame, then I think you're onto something. The great thing about games is that they a) have the time to let you delve into the lives of the characters, which is something that movies struggle to do because they simply can't cover everything they want to, and b) really immerse you into the world so you feel like you're actually Peter Parker, soaring through the streets of Manhattan as you thwip your way from Harlem to the Brooklyn Bridge. The web slinging is particularly good and the fighting is fun too, so long as you remember to dodge. There were some things that niggled at me, made the game not as enjoyable to play as it was to watch, but all in all it was a brilliant game and really did Spider-man justice.
Tumblr media
Forza Horizon 4 (8) I remember the showcase for this game at E3 and boy, did it look good. Driving games were something I loved as a kid, albeit they were the likes of Mario Kart and Diddy Kong Racing. So far as 'adult' racing games go, this one is pretty great. It looks spectacular on a 4K screen using the XBox One X and the racing itself is exhilarating and challenging enough to make you want to work for those wins. I wish that it covered more of Britain, being limited to the countryside and Edinburgh was a bit of a let down, but I understand why they did. This is definitely a game that has more longevity if you play it with friends, although a quick jaunt down the motorway at 200mph every now and again never hurt anyone.
Tumblr media
Destiny 2: Forsaken (7.5) Ah, Destiny. I've been playing the game since Vanilla and I can't explain how good it felt back in the beginning. I could grind for hours by myself without a care in the world. Forsaken hasn't quite recaptured this for me, as I still find it hard to play the game by myself. With friends, though, it's a great experience now. We love picking up all the bounties and working towards long-term quests in the evenings and on the weekends, there's plenty of content now like the players wanted. Personally, I wasn't a fan of the story, but that's a personal thing as revenge has never been a thrilling plot line for me, so I lacked the drive to get behind hunting down Uldren. However, the game is still by far the best shooter I own from the point of view of the way it handles and the characters you encounter. I'm very glad I've been able to get back into it with this expansion.

The Jonicles - Entry 5
Note: This is the fifth entry of The Jonicles, hence why the date does not match when this is being posted. This was written back in May to June of this year before I started this blog, and there will be errors or developments in how this series was being written. Please enjoy (or don't enjoy) the fifth entry of The Jonicles!
It is the 31st of May, 2022 at 6:09 am (nice) and I'm freezing my nuts off. It is Tuesday, which means the day of reckoning has passed, but that begs the question: What did it cost? It is also #13 of my Jon Arbuckle hyperfixation. I have gone past 10 days which means my sanity has gobe far too low to salvage.
I meant to write this entry before, but I had to do schoolwork and I kinda forgot to. I've also been exhausted from it all.
But I have a very important thing to document. On the 28th of May, 2022 at 4:41 pm, I purchased Garfield Kart: Furious Racing on Steam for $2.15 as it was 90% off. This is a monumental moment because, unlike the original Garfield Kart, Garfield Kart: Furious Racing actually seems to run properly on my computer, which is real nice! Initially when I bought the game, I thought it would be a sequel, akin to Mario Kart 8 in a way. But I was pleasently surprised to find out that Garfield Kart: Furious Racing is more of a remaster of the original, with better graphics, higher poly models, that same golden soundtrack and, oh my god, it has multiplayer!?!?!?!? Ayo!?!?!?!?
But one of the best parts about it is that when I launched the game and went into the control settings, it's actually functional and doesn't go all wack on me! Heavens above! This is obviously the best god damn racing game I have ever played in my entire,  pitiful 16 year existence.
Jokes aside though, this game is... actually really good! It's like if you took the original game and buffed it up to 100 (whatever THAT means) and gave it a fresh coat of beautiful bright orange paint to go along with it. It's smooth, quite polished and oh my gosh Jon looks even cuter than he did before. Just look at that stupid little polite smile on his face, it's adorable :)
Anyway! I can actually drive without the entire game lagging! It's not as smooth as butter but it's smooth. I made a rivalry with Arlene and Nermal, killed Garfield by throwing a pie at him and making him flip off the side of a bridge on Palerock Lake, glitched out the camera and commited vehicular homicide. I even won a race! But there's still one thing that I'd like to address...
Jon still feels lesser when he loses a race, and I just need to say this again: Jon, so matter how low you feel, no matter what place you get in the race, no matter how fast you drive, you are still special to me. You still mean the world to me even when you feel you mean nothing to the world. It doesn't matter whether you win or lose if the race, you are still first place in my heart... and my brain, which I gladly and warmly welcome you into with open arms. It's only been over a week, but it feels like an eternity that I've had this fixation on you for, and I cherish every bit of it. Drive on, Jon. Love you buddy.
Last edited at 8:56, 1st of June. I... really wish school wasn't in the way all the time so I could finish writing these.
Kinda surprised I didn't go into all the nitty-gritty details when writing this one. Like, I could have talked about the higher poly models more, Jon's presence, the improved UI and higher quality music, the improved courses and how cool it is that you can actually play with your friends on Garfield Kart for the first time. I feel like this entry coulda' had more potential, to be honest. But eh, oh well. It's what it's, I suppose.
That picture of Jon reversing in his kart is super cute, though. Look at him, he looks so polite and goofy....
Cheers,
Your Local Jonnoisseur

Sorry you're home sick RTA! How about Greenflame for the ship ask?
Thank you dude! Sorry it took me a while to get to this, but here and I got it now! Thanks for your patience.
1. How do much do I ship it?: Never heard of it/ Notp / Dislike / used to ship / maybe / ship it / aww / otp / IS IT CANON YET?
2. What non sexual activities do they like to do together?
Training, going to see movies, sometimes playing video games, fighting among side each other in battle and saving people together, racing each other with their elemental dragons, or just talking to each other.
3. Who does chores around the house?
Lloyd is often more busy then Kai so he has to finish the chores more often.
4.Who’s the better cook?
Kai. But only because he secretly watches youtube videos on how to cook before he does, he refuses to admit it though. No matter how much Lloyd can see through his bluff.
5. Who’s the funniest drunk?
Even if Lloyd did drink, he still wouldn’t get nearly as loopy as Kai does.
It might have to do with the time he got sprayed with Venomari venom, but Kai can get very out of touch with reality and do a lot of stupid yet hilarious stuff. Lloyd does everything he can to make sure he doesn’t get seriously hurt, but sometimes isn’t also afraid to film him when he’s doing something particularly hilarious to show to the others.
6. Do they have kids?
I could definitely imagine them adopting a kid when they both get older, but since Kai didn’t have parents for most of his life growing up, and Lloyd had a lot of issues with his father, I would imagine both of them would be very unsure of how to parent.
Lloyd would play the roll of the over enthusiastic happy-go-lucky parent, who really doesn’t want to be a bad father and goes out of his way to make sure he isn’t even remotely similar to how his father once was.
Kai would be the “cool dad,” letting the kid stay up a little bit past bedtime, try to act cool in front of the kids friends, and be a lot more chill than Lloyd. Mostly because he doesn’t really know if he’s doing things right, but if he acts confident about it then it can’t be that bad. (Which is basically his mindset for everything.)
Both of them I would imagine being very protective. Lloyd more than Kai in just common life, but Kai would most certainly turn into a paranoid wreck if their kid is ever put in a situation where she could be really hurt, like if the kid was training to go on missions or things like that.
(Sorry this turned much longer then I thought it would, I know the question was just “would they have kids” but I absolutely love this idea so much I had to expand on it a little bit at least.)
7. Do they have any traditions?
I’m not really sure. I could imagine the two of them doing something on the day Lloyd defeated the Overlord (sort of) since the two of them were quite a big focus during that time. Idk.
8. What do they fight about?
Oh boy here we go.
Obviously they would have simple little arguments sometimes like most couples do, but I think there would be one really big problem they would really get emotional with.
I know this is sort of behavior for Kai is only sort of hinted at in canon, but I imagine Kai would be very loyal and protective of Lloyd, to the point of making himself think he matters less than him, and put his own well-being and even his life on the line to make sure Lloyd’s safe. Lloyd of coarse doesn’t want him to do that and have Kai possibly get too hurt trying to help him, but Kai is just too terrified of the thought of loosing Lloyd to listen to him.
I’m not super sure how Kai would break out of that mindset, that could probably be for a fanfic all on it’s own, but I have faith they’d be okay.
9. What would they do if they found their paring tag on tumblr? (If they have one)
Well they’re not real so they never would, but I think if they don’t find the hateful stuff, Kai would absolutely love all the fanart, fics, and other stuff people have made and would totally show any new kind of things he finds to Lloyd, which would just make him blush and feel a little shy.
10.Who cried at the end of Marley and me?
Out of the two of them, Lloyd would probably cry the most while Kai would act like it doesn’t get to him but would be crying himself to sleep that night.
11.Who always wins at Mario kart?
Lloyd. Kai could get close but he always makes a wrong turn somewhere that would completely mess him up. Also Lloyd can be downright evil with turtle shells.
(Lil extra headcannon: I would imagine on game night where everyone is playing Mario Kart together, Kai would always focus on helping Lloyd win without letting Lloyd even know.)
12.One thing I like about this ship?
Greenflame has almost all my favorite ship tropes put into it, and reminds me a lot of a bunch of other otps I ship. I know a lot of what I like about the ship involves a lot of projecting things that aren’t entirely there, but …it’s shipping. It’s kind of part of the bargain.
13.One thing I don’t like about the ship?
Ignoring the obvious elephanti in the room, the only thing I don’t like about it is it competes with another ship I like equally as much as greenflame is greenstorm. To this day I still can’t choose which one I like more.
14.The song I would say fits them?
Ho ho man, I don’t think I could choose just one. I listen to a lot of soundtrack pieces that remind me of them, heck I could probably make a whole playlist, but if I had to pick and choose, I would narrow it down to these two songs:
Do it for Her - After everything I’ve just said, this should be quite self explanatory. Just switch the genders and pronouns and I could personally imagine Kai singing this about Lloyd to… I’m not sure who but you get my point.
Your Silver Garden - Okay I admit, this is mostly a greenflame song for me because of my Magica AU so it’s probably really weird coming from an outsider, but gosh darn this song is just so beautiful and reminds me so much of those two that I couldn’t not mention it.
15. Another headcanon about the paring? (Free space)
Lloyd and Kai hold hands almost all the time. Mostly when they’re out in public areas, on missions, or by themselves. It’s a big comfort for both of them.
Send meee a ship
