wanted to try my hand at a fake screenshot thing with a scene from one of the bttf fics of all time, Time Is a Flat Circle by @fourth-dimensional-thinker! i set in to draw only the "little canary" line but. as you can tell. my hand slipped and fell down a 6 story building

#botched art #super mario #yes i let my sonic fixation into this sketchpage too #because while i was staring at the brothership models it kept occurring to me #how many features and proportions mario in particular has with sonic #luigi is lankier so it doesn't hit quite as strong with him #i also kept staring at the Shading Circle thinking like #“that can't be it. there has to be more. there isn't even a highlight”#but that's the thing #the cell shading doesn't have a highlight on the character models #just a thin black outline and the soft shading on the veeeery edge of minimal features #these bros are mostly flat colors!! and being in-game seeing them moving tricks my brain into seeing more depth than there is #i'm still so bad at drawing these two after years of various attempts #it starts with the face shape. trying to place the cheek curve while knowing that it'll be covered by the nose and mustache anyway #then its the nose. god i hate trying to draw the nose #then its the ear hair which i can never quite place right #and after struggling with all that i sweat profusely and spend 20 minutes just trying to sketch the mustache #then have to adjust said mustache a minimum of 5 more times until it looks right #and then the hats?? the fucking hats????#you'll notice i didn't draw them for the purposes of this page. guess why. guess.

runs said newspaper (and as someone who did the same for a year, I respect that a lot)

isn't really all that interested in MC, which is a nice change of pace

and finally, seems to dye his hair purple which makes him look like an eggplant <3

Also when he saved MC from falling on the ground and then brushed it off afterwards because he "only did what anyone would have done" back in season 4? That part was so good

EXCEPT. skimping on the backgrounds. but again. more effort than i'm willing to put in #but i think it still counts bc my only real plan was to have the askr pillars/walls as framing/backdrops #ALSO the characterization... in the panel where lif walks into frame. it's SO fun to me #they both look at lif. but moe is Not subtle about it. looking directly at him. while alfonse side-eyes him.#and the most IMPORTANT detail. is that alfonse and lif are making the same kind of face. like 🤨#there is SO MUCH POTENTIAL. in alfonse and lif sharing facial expressions. in having the same knee-jerk reactions to things.#and it's espppp fun to figure out bc you're only working w half of lif's face. it's all in the eyes/brows and SOMETIMES!#SOMETIMES!!!! it's in the nose! in this illust he is more relaxed/resting so you don't see it here #but i'm TELLING you. adding some scrunch to the nose can add soooo much expression-wise #this took longer than i expected it to. also. which is why i'm so over it LMFAOO #but i do think the extra time was worth it... first run of the last panel was too lighthearted/jokey #capturing some conflict between moe/alfonse was the right choice. in how intensely this starts off (tonally)#AND! in showing how they do butt heads at times. in fact sometimes they clash REALLY badly!!!!#which is actually so huge bc i've wanted to capture this since the beginning. how they're so similar but also so opposite #that a lot of times! they understand each other deeply and cover each other's basis. i always find it funny when a character's signature color isn't even their favorite one. anyways, kuroba's favorite color is actually cornflower.
