We are back with Blog No. 3 and guess which film we will be writing about this time! Yeah, not a difficult guess at all. We Hrithikians know the timeline of his films by heart.
When Hrithik Roshan had signed on to play Altaaf in Mission Kashmir, he was just another newcomer in bollywood.
By the time, the film released, he was a phenomenon after being catapulted into fame overnight by Kaho Na Pyaar Hai. Also, aided by his terrific and subtle performance in Fiza, he had established himself as not just a star, but also as a sensitive and intelligent actor. Naturally, there were a lot of expectations from Mission Kashmir. Whether or not the film lived upto expectations is not ours to say because we believe it completely depends upon the individual perceptions of viewers. However, Hrithik proved his worth yet again, and this fact remains undisputed even today.
It was particularly challenging to play Altaaf after Amaan, considering both characters were similar to a certain extent and Altaaf could easily become redundant. And yet, the very first time Hrithik graced the screen as Altaaf, the audience knew this was a completely different character. Hrithik made Altaaf more ruthless than Amaan. While Amaan had a lot of repressed anger, Altaaf was all about wild fury. He even completely altered his body language so that Altaaf never resembled Amaan. Altaaf had far more confidence, walked with bold strides, his head always held high, proud in the belief that he was right, unlike Amaan who was always stuck in a moral dilemma.
Mission Kashmir also marked the beginning of a very special on screen bonding between Hrithik and Preity Zinta which definitely elevated the overall quality of the film itself. Hrithik went on to work with Preity in two more films, incidentally two of his all time best. The ending of the 'jheelon ka shahar' song was almost poetic and the chemistry between the two as they looked into each other's eyes was undeniable.
In conclusion, despite the criticism levelled against the film from several quarters, Mission Kashmir gave us some treasures which we Hrithik fans shall cherish forever. And we express our wholehearted gratitude for that.

The artist has intensively contributed to the Tamil music industry and worked with many musicians like Ilaiyaraja, A.R Rahman, Rajkumar S.A, S. Balachander, Vaidyanathan L., Deva, Gangai Amaran Aadithyan, K.V. Mahadevan, Shankar Ganesh, Vidyasagar and many more. In this blog, we reminisce about some of the many iconic Tamil Karaoke Songs of K.J Yesudas and how he still conquers every soul with his mesmerising voice.
Deivam Thantha: You must have heard this song whether you are from the 1970s or not. It is one of the most significant hits of Yesudas from the movie Aval Oru Thodar Kathai. The song has a haunting melody and profound meaning; every Tamil music loves to the core.Â

Kannukkum Kannukkum: IIlayarajaâs music goes in sync the best with Yesudasâs voice, and this song is the proof of that. This overwhelming number from 1980 will strike the chords of your heart even today. It will become a massive part of your karaoke sessions. We challenge you!Â

So go ahead, check both the versions and fall into the common dilemma of voicing which one is better.Â

Rajasthanâs renowned âHariprem Filmsâ headed by âNitin Samadhiyaâ presents a plethora of royal symphony to India.
âHariprem Filmsâ presents Rajasthani folk music video âVidaaiâ by Swaroop Khan. Itâs all about daughters first love â Father! Hariprem Films presents a Rajasthani folk song âVidaaiâ, it embarks on a fascinating journey of story-telling that focuses on the special bond shared by fathers and daughters. Having charmed audiences across India with their previous tracks, especially those featuring the vocals of music industry heavyweights, they now intend to push the bar further with the alluring vocal textures of popular Rajasthani playback singer, Swaroop Khan, known for his work in films like Aamir Khanâs PK and Sanjay Leela Bhansaliâs Padmaavat. Interestingly, apart from singing, Swaroop Khan has also written and produced the track.
youtube
âThis song is close to me and can be considered as part of me. As every girl child is the heart and soul of parents, Vidaai is a part of my heart and soul now. Iâve written, sung and composed this song by pouring my heart and soul at every stage of the song. Iâve seen quite a lot of Vidaai rituals in Rajasthan like everyone else, Iâve noticed girls feel sad at the time of their marriage. They feel that theyâre not a part of their own family; however, that is not true. Iâve tried to send a message through the song that girl is an integral part of the family and theyâre treated with the same level and respect as boys. Itâs a strong message that Iâve tried to convey through the song. Iâm thankful to Hariprem films as during pandemic, itâs hard to work during this period. Mr Nitin Samadhiya and his team are great, they followed all the protocols and guidelines of COVID-19 during the shoot. We had a lot of fun shooting and at the same time, we were emotional as well because of the nature of the song. The team loved âVidaaiâ song very much. I appreciate everything that has been done at Hariprem films and Iâm looking forward to work with the team in future for many songs.â says Singer Swaroop Khan.
Vidaai features the use of indigenous Rajasthani instruments with the sole purpose of creating an enchanting atmosphere around listeners. In fact, these historic instruments are the perfect vehicle to feel the intensity of the songâs message and celebrate the love-filled relationship between father and daughter.
youtube
âSince last year, we wanted to work with Swaroop Khan because of his voice and folk genre. We discussed this with him and decided to make a song that will connect with the audience soul. Swaroop came up with this lovely song âVidaaiâ which describes the raw emotions between fathers and daughters. We planned the shoot with all safety precautions and safety measures. We wanted Swaroop Khan in the video so we adjusted the storyline accordingly. As a person, Swaroop is such an amazing, humble, and down to earth person. Working with him was a great experience and hence we would love to work with him again in future.â, says Mr Nitin Samadhiya (MD CEO of Hariprem Films)
The music video features heart-touching performances by a stellar cast that includes Aaradhya Rao (Winner of Eva Miss India), Kunal Acharya (Udaipurâs model and lifestyle/fashion blogger) and Anil Bhagwat (Viceroyâs House web series fame). With top-notch production values and the directorial prowess of Haripremâs CEO, Nitin Samadhiya (nominee at the Zee Sagarika Music Awards), Vidaai boasts an outstanding team of professionals consisting of co-director Ankit Chatterjee, concept by Vishal Nahar, cinematography by Ankit Chauhan and edited by Aman Singh. Supporting production credits include Mahendra Samadhiya, Rani Samadhiya, Prasun Kansara and Aastha Bhatt.
Nitin Samadhiya, the MD and CEO of âHariprem Filmsâ is blessed to encourage artistic music. In twelve short years, his passion for film arts and crafts has paid off well. Samadhiya has been nominated for Best Sound Engineer at the ZEE Sagarika Music Awards for the album âKanherichi Phuleâ. Incidentally, Samdhiyaâs sound engineering skills have also landed him in the Limca Book of Records. Since its inception in 2008, Hariprem Films has expanded its portfolio to include prestigious projects for the Shiv Sena and the Government of Rajasthan. It has worked with over 200 of the top conglomerates from India and the world over while handling commercial advertising and marketing accounts of respected Rajasthani brands. Most recently, their 2021 release âBadhta Jaâ with Shankar Mahadevan, a motivational song composed by Kiran Kumar Bhatt and arranged and recorded by Tejas Chavan and Samadhiya himself, opened to rave reviews by audiences. Download Best Tamil Movie Song and Ringtones
Tamil tunes are connecting with and charming, an outrageous wellspring of fervor. The early kinds of these tunes got a handle on the rich manifestations from Sangam Literature anyway over the time span, the sort, the structure, and the style of music started changing into an absolutely new structure that is reestablishing and psyche loosening up.
The new kind of Tamil tunes is unfathomably influenced by western melodic show. Besides, various new instrumental tunes are permeated in the wonderful sections of the tunes. These touch the focal point of listerner's heart and leave a suffering impact. Beside that exceptional Tamil vocalists and arrangers like AR Rahman, Illayaraja, Yesuads, Hariharan, Unni Krishnan, and Lata Mangeshkar have win hearts of a million with their grand voice and striking pieces.

There are various destinations that offer free download anyway potential results are there that the sound quality may not be so extraordinary. An enormous bit of the overall public download tunes from free goals feeling that it's not generous on their pockets. In spite of the way that a couple of tunes may be open in extraordinary sound quality anyway a huge bit of these destinations pack music records to make a couple of save assets from their end. This weight certainly lessens the sound quality.
Some are paid locales where incredible quality songs are open to a detriment yet by far most of these goals are not outstanding as no one gets a kick out of the chance to pay for something that is available to no end. Beside these there are locales on which people can check out their favored Tamil tunes on the web.

Life and times of Jaidev.
by
Vikram Appasaeb Jadav
*âDekh li teri khudai, bas mera dil bhar gaya* *Teri rehmat chup rahi, main rote rote mar gaya . .â*
One of the greatest but unsung and unwept composers of yore was Jaidev. In 1933, 15 year old Jaidev Verma ran away from Ludhiana to Bombay, to become a film star. He acted in eight films as a child artist in Wadia Film Company. But owing to his father's blindness, he had to return to Ludhiana. While he was acting in films in Bombay he took music lessons from Krishnarao Jaokar and Janardan Jaokar. After his father's death, it was his responsibility to look after his sister. After he got her married, he went to Lucknow and continued his music studies under Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.
Ali Akbar took Jaidev as his music assistant when he composed music for Navketan's âAandhiyanâ and âHum Safarâ. From âTaxi Driverâ he became SD Burmanâs assistant. SD had full trust in his genius assistant; each time he entrusted him with a composing or creative job, he would advise him not to complicate it with difficult âmurkisâ and âharkatsâ. Jaidevâs contribution to the compositions of SD Burman can be gauged through these very intricate nuances, very typical of him, obvious in a number of gems like âPhaili hui hain sapnon ki baahenâ (House No. 44), âHum bekhudi mein tumko pukare chale gayeâ (Kala Pani), âHum hain raahi pyar keâ (Nau Do Gyarah), âDekho rootha na karoâ (Tere Ghar Ke Saamne), âAise to na dekhoâ (Teen Deviyan), and âTere mere sapne ab ek rang hainâ (Guide) to name a few.
Jaidev got an independent assignment in âJoru Ka Bhaiâ, after which he composed music for ChetanAnandâs âAnjaliâ. Music of both of these films became very popular. But, with âHum Donoâ, Jaidev came into the limelight, and how? Who can forget the bhajan âAllah Tero Naam, Ishwar Tero Naamâ sung by Lata! And as long as there are lovers around, âAbhi Na Jao Chhodkarâ will be their favourite anthem as if it is a Valentine message. âMain zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gayaâ became the life philosophy of Dev Anand. Jaidev built a reputation as a sensitive composer who did not compromise on the quality of music for the sake of applause.
After Hum Donoâs success, a promise was made by Dev Anand that every alternate film of Navketan will have music by SD Burman and Jaidev. Accordingly, SD Burman was entrusted the baton of âKala Bazaarâ and Jaidev âsignedâ for the music of âGuideâ for which he is believed to have composed a couple of tunes too (âTere mere sapne ab ek rang hainâ, and âDin dhal jaaye haye raat na jaaye); however, the film was made and released finally with music by S D Burman, his career best. Jaidev proposed, Dev Anand disposed! Probably, for the first time, Jaidev felt exploited and stifled at Navketan and âGuideâ marked the end of his long and fruitful musical association with both Dev Anand and SD Burman. Navketan, too, never called him back, which was the unkindest cut of all. Though the hurt feeling lurked in his mind for long, his respect and reverence for SD Burman remained the same till his last. Besieged by a chain of misfortunes, Jaidev made âJo kho gaya main usko bhulata chala gayaâ the mantra of his life with his spiritual character to âguideâ him.
What happened to Jaidev after Hum Dono is the kind of heart-wrenching cruelty that film industry keeps inflicting on its best talents. After the mega success of Hum Dono songs Jaidev was the natural choice of Navketan for their next film Guide starring Dev Anand. Jaidev composed and recorded two brilliant songs and all persons in Navketan management were extremely happy with the songs. But all of a sudden, mysteriously enough Jaidev was thrown out of Guide!
It is said that Dev Anand pressurized Jaidev to work as S.D. Burmanâs assistant in Guide. It was a cruel event where a sensitive creative genius like Jaidev was suppressed by the heartless mighty. Jaidev was never again invited by Navketan to compose songs. Dev Anand used both the Jaidev songs in his film Guide. It is said that those two songs were âDin Dhal Jaaye Haye Raat Na Jayeâ and âTere Mere Sapne Ab Ek Rang Haiâ sung by Mohammad Rafi. Being cast out of Guide was a very big setback in Jaidevâs film music career. He never really recovered from the shock. Jaidev used to frequently narrate such incidents to his friends, wracked by inconsolable grief.
This was the time when Jaidev met and got introduced to young composers like Roshan and Madan Mohan. This is a great example of the saying âgenius finds geniusâ. Roshan invited Jaidev to sing in his very first film. Once, when Roshan and Jaidev were going together to a film company, they saw Madan Mohan. Roshan was reported to have told Jaidev, âI am going to introduce you to a brilliant young composerâ. On introduction, Madan Mohan and Jaidev needed no time at all to become best of friends.
Roshan, Madan Mohan and Jaidev had many similarities. They were rare music geniuses. They were unfailingly great human beings too. Their unquenchable thirst ran to music, languages, literature and wine. None of them were given the importance or prominence that they richly deserved. But they lived their entire lives as friends and supporters. Theirs was a rare friendship in the âman eats manâ world of cinema.
Film world has its own inviolable rules. It needs people who can achieve mass popularity by shortest possible route. Its impatience with geniuses is well known. Geniuses like Salil Chowdhury, Madan Mohan, Roshan, Vasant Desai and Jaidev failed in this race to huge popularity. They did not have the talent to market themselves. What complicated the matter was group politics that acted as a barrier to fresh music entering the industry. True geniuses who blazed their own path overcoming all barriers in our film industry are very few.
Jaidev also composed the musical score for âMaitee Gharâ, a Nepali film produced by King Mahendra. The King was so pleased with Jaidev that he offered him a blank cheque and asked him to fill in any amount as he wished. But Jaidev returned the cheque and asked for a tiger skin instead!
People who speak of the Golden Age of Hindi film music mostly speak of commercially successful names like Naushad, Shankar Jaikishen, S.D. Burman, R.D. Burman, Kalyanji Anandji and Laxmikant Pyarelal. But there are many composers who established their identities through the uniqueness of their compositions alone. They may not have composed music for a very large number of films. Many of their films might not have succeeded at the box office.
Jaidev had composed music for less than thirty films. The number of songs to his credit may not be more than hundred and fifty. But Jaidev is a name imprinted on the hearts of lovers of vintage Hindi film songs as the genius who gave such fabulous numbers as âKabhi Khud Pe Kabhi Haalaat Peâ, âAllah Tero Naamâ and âAbhi Na Jao Chhod Karâ. âKabhi Khud Pe Kabhi Haalaat Peâ is among the best ghazal numbers sung by Mohammad Rafi. There are many who rate the number sung by Lata Mangeshkar for Jaidev âAllah Tero Naamâ as the best prayer song to have emerged from Indian films. In a recent televised event, Jaidevâs âAbhi Na Jao Chhod Karâ was rated both as their favourites and the best Hindi film song ever by todayâs stars Shankar Mahadevan and Farhan Akthar.
It is possible that an average listener may identify Jaidev as the only music composer from Hindi films to have won the National award thrice. But the lamentable fact is that this composer of incomparable songs, winner of many state awards and winner of âSur Singar Samsadâ award for Lifetime Achievement in Music remains so unknown to common man that we keep hearing the question, âJaidev? Who is he?â even from people who love his music!
It was Jaidev who introduced ghazal singer Hariharan to film music in the film Gaman (1979) with the song âAjeeb Saanehaâ. This is not merely one of Hariharanâs best songs it has become one of the finest ghazals in Hindi film music. It won the U.P. state award and a nomination for National award for Hariharan. In the film Kinare Kinare, Jaidev brought together four leading singers Mohammad Rafi, Talat Mehmood, Manna Dey and Mukesh to sing a song to be picturised on one character played by Dev Anand. It was an event nobody had tried till then.
Jaidev gave Yesudas some of his best Hindi songs that suited the unique pathos that Yesudas carried in his singing style. He even made him sing for Amitabh Bachhan in Aalaap released in 1977. âZindagi Ko Sawarna Hogaâ and âChand Akelaâ with a light classical touch and the sad lullaby âKoi Gata Main So Jataâ in this film, were Yesudasâ very important Hindi film songs. Another fine ghazal singer Bhupinder shot to fame with a fabulous Jaidev song from his film Gharonda. Who can forget the depth of feeling that the song âEk Akela Is Shahar Meinâ carried with such conviction? Jaidevâs Gaman also saw the introduction of another important singer, Suresh Wadkar to Hindi films with the classical based âSeene Mein Jalanâ.
Jaidev was admired by producers as a good composer, but they considered him good enough for the small-budget films. Though most of his films failed at the box office, many of them, such as 'Kinare Kinare', 'Reshma Aur Shera', 'Alap', 'Prem Parbat', 'Gaman' and 'Ankahee', are remembered for his imaginative musical score. It is unfortunate that despite his expertise in classical and folk music and imaginative approach, Jaidev had only 'Hum Dono' and to a certain extent 'Mujhe Jeene Do' as the only commercially successful films to his credit.
Jaidev was a lonely man with no house of his own and no family to take care of him except a few friends who were mostly from the literary fields or judges, lawyers, painters, high rank officials and dignitaries. He needed a room to display his awards and trophies but sadly, most part of his life in Bombay, he lived alone as a tenant in a single room at Lily Court, near Ritz Hotel, Churchgate. His âGharondaâ song âEk akela is shehar mein aab-o-dana dhoondhta hai, ashiyana dhoondhta haiâŠâ was almost biographical and depicted his plight.
A winner of four Sur Singar Samsad awards, the Lata Mangeshkar Award of the MP Government and three National Awards (âReshma Aur Sheraâ, âGamanâ, âAnkaheeâ), Jaidev did not get the recognition he deserved and that is a sad commentary on the musical culture of modern cinema. Looking back on Jaidev's career as a music director, his struggles, achievements and set-backs, his pensive melody 'Kabhi khud pe kabhi halat pe rona aya' from 'Hum Dono' suddenly comes to mind and the heart grieves for the talent that was wasted. By a strange quirk of fate, before his composing days, Jaidev also sang songs on All India Radio. Sahirâs âTang aa chuke hain kashm-e-kash-e-zindagee se humâ was first sung on AIR by none other than Jaidev. He was the first composer who used the 'glockenspiel' for the cigarette lighter tune in âHum Donoâ. (It was Kersee Lord who brought this instrument to India, and also played it to good effect.)
As compared to his contemporaries, Jaidev was underpaid or not paid in time or not at all paid many a times. But, money considerations did not dilute his passion or affect the quality of work. He was a workaholic and had a method to his madness; he took note of the backdrop of the film, the situation, the character, the dialect, the lyrics and worked meticulously on the details of the song, its arrangement and orchestration till the final recording. No doubt he was exploited many a times of which he was well aware, but it was only when he felt so, he cut off his ties with the filmmakers (like with Dev Anand and S D Burman after âGuideâ) and dissociated himself from the composing assignment. Not many know that the title track of Ramanand Sagarâs epoch making serial âRamayanâ was by Jaidev. He left the serial at the nascent stage itself as he was not even reimbursed the taxi fare (from Churchgate to Natraj Studios, Andheri East), leave aside the credit or remuneration for composing!!
In Jaidevâs own opinion he gave his best for Hrishikesh Mukherjiâs âAalapâ, but when Mukherji and Amitabh Bachchan were ignored, what can be said about Jaidevâs plight? But Jaidev gave his all for the ultimate reward he got from âAalapâ. His association with Harivanshrai Bachchan got him the opportunity to compose the âMadhushalaâ, which had Manna Dey singing the âMadhushalaâ into the annals of posterity!
After three decades of continuous struggle as a music director, and with only thirty six films to his credit, Jaidev was a tired man. Age was catching up with him and his health was failing. He had no one except friends to care for him and no house to call his own. Earlier he used to spend his vacant hours over a glass of liquor. But later even that blessing was denied to him on medical grounds. On December 14, 1986, when Jaidev stepped on the stage to receive the fourth Sur Singar Samsad award for his classical music in 'Ankahee', he looked weak but healthy enough to last another decade. The glow on his tired face was probably the last flash of a falling star. On January 6, 1987, he died suddenly, at the age of 68, leaving the film industry to grieve for the loss of a talent it had consistently neglected. Life had been unreasonably cruel to him but death was more than gracious to liberate him from the misfortunes of life.

Eminemâs Clumsy Statement on Gun Violence, and 9 More New Songs
Every Friday, pop critics for The New York Times weigh in on the weekâs most notable new songs and videos. Just want the music? Listen to the Playlist on Spotify here (or find our profile: nytimes). Like what you hear? Let us know at [email protected] and sign up for our Louder newsletter, a once-a-week blast of our pop music coverage.
Eminem, âDarknessâ
From the beginning, âDarknessâ feels like a familiar kind of Eminem song â the mood is morbid and the rapping is anxious, seemingly about an upcoming concert. But soon it becomes clear heâs stringing together a series of double entendres. Then the songâs video turns shattering: Heâs not rapping as himself, sweating before a big show. Heâs rapping from the perspective of someone on the verge of slaughtering people at a music festival, in the vein of the Route 91 Harvest Festival, where 58 concertgoers were killed in 2017.
The video is gruesome, disorienting and ethically defective. It stomps on the empathy youâd been encouraged to extend to Eminem, whoâs long rapped potently about battling his personal demons, making it unclear if youâve been commiserating with a sociopath the whole time. (After the main part of the song concludes, the video clumsily pivots to a PSA about gun violence.)
This track will have a typical Eminem rollout â shock, followed by outrage. (Itâs part of a surprise album that arrived on Friday called âMusic to Be Murdered Byâ; another new song, âUnaccommodating,â references the Manchester bombing outside an Ariana Grande concert.) Certainly, a representative of the victimsâ families will speak out about how this thought exercise helps no one, and hurts many. That person will be correct. Perhaps a different artist could have explored this tension in a way that didnât feel like a traumatizing bait-and-switch, but the moral irresponsibility of invoking imagery of this nature without an unassailable message is almost too much to bear. And the veneer of wordplay itâs coated in is no armor at all. JON CARAMANICA
Thundercat, âBlack Quallsâ
âI just bought a crib on top of the hill,â Thundercat proclaims in his familiar falsetto â halfway giddy, halfway dreamy â at the start of âBlack Qualls,â the first single from an album due in April. âAnd I bought a brand-new ride/Am I keeping it real?â He decides to let himself off the hook: âThereâs nothing wrong if youâ
got it/Iâm not living in fear, Iâm just being honest.â He chose musicians from opposing generations as guest vocalists here: Steve Arrington (formerly of the funk pioneers Slave) and the young multi-instrumentalist and singer Steve Lacy. After all, this music picks up right where he left off with âDrunk,â his breakout 2017 album: springing straight out of the Isley Brothersâ 1970s milieu, landing somewhere in the near future. GIOVANNI RUSSONELLO
U.S. Girls, âOvertimeâ
The first single from âHeavy Light,â the forthcoming album by Meg Remy (who records as U.S. Girls) is like early-period Madonna sputtering out of a radio while an ESG concert is going on. CARAMANICA
Sunny Jain, âWild Wild Eastâ
Sunny Jain, the drummer who leads the Red Baraat brass band, vastly expands his palette on âWild Wild East,â a furiously propulsive song from his solo project. Bollywood meets New Orleans, new age, rock and whatever else it takes to make this five-minute track hurtle forward with a new fusion at every junction. JON PARELES
Jonas Brothers, âWhat a Man Gotta Doâ
A crisis of masculinity? A consideration of grown-up duties, responsibilities and limits? Nope. This is a boy-band come-on, begging for the attention of a flawless girl, with âboyâ find-and-replaced by âmanâ: âWhat a man got to prove to be totally locked up by you?â Professionalism reigns, as the Jonas Brothers and their team update the syncopations, handclaps and gospel thump of George Michaelâs âFaith.â The brothersâ vocals still sound perpetually eager; the production builds fast and slickly. Will young girls still believe it?PARELES
Gregory Porter, âRevivalâ
Gregory Porter yokes together his blues and soul roots with 21st-century pop power balladry on the lead single from âAll Rise,â his sixth studio album. The result is about what you might expect if Leon Bridges, Alicia Keys and Trombone Shorty dashed off a songwriting collab (in fact, Porter wrote âRevivalâ with help from a couple of partners). Handclaps, a 10-person choir, fuzzily distorted bass and a tapestry of horns surround Porterâs leonine baritone as he hollers the chorus: âYou lift me higher, out of the fire, out of the flames/I lost the feeling, but you give me meaning again.â The video shows a young dancer, Jemoni Powe, reacting to the acquittal of Rodney Kingâs assailants in 1992, drawing a loose connection between the songâs vaguely pious themes and the continuing struggle for racial justice. Mike Campbellâs Dirty Knobs, âWreckless Abandonâ
Mike Campbell was a founding member of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in 1976 and his production and playing â with countless layers of vintage guitars â were at the core of Pettyâs music for the four decades afterward. Campbellâs own band, the Dirty Knobs, puts absolutely no distance between his music and Pettyâs. The music is a classic-rock portmanteau, invoking eastward-looking Beatles, the Who, the Byrds and the Rolling Stones just for starters. And in all those years together, Campbell clearly soaked up Pettyâs craggy vocals and pithy sentiments: He sings, âYou were lucky just to be alive/Living without a net.â PARELES
Chelsea Cutler, âSad Tonightâ
When Spotifycore evolves from pure algorithm to something more human, itâll likely sound like this â sprightly, emotionally tactile, a little sweet and cloying, while never not being breezy, so that those disinclined to pay close attention wonât feel left out. CARAMANICA
Sarah Harmer, âSt. Peterâs Bayâ
How Canadian is this? âSt. Peterâs Bayâ â itâs on Prince Edward Island â is a folky, minor-key song about ice skating at night, with a gentle vocal and a sturdy melody, that maps a precarious relationship onto the wintry conditions. âEvery little crack in the ice seemed to be enough/To make you think you might go under,â Sarah Harmer sings, with her voice gliding nearly unsupported above drums and bass. Later, a string orchestra bolsters her as she offers consolation: âStill, we had a good skate, didnât we baby?â PARELES
John McLaughlin, âKabirâ
On John McLaughlinâs new album, âIs That So?,â the esteemed fusion guitarist teams up again with his longtime collaborator, the Hindustani percussionist Zakir Hussain, as well as the vocalist Shankar Mahadevan. McLaughlin is known best for his blazing, distorted, line-driven guitar playing with Shakti and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, but here he surrounds Mahadevanâs clear, gently beseeching voice with a mist of Western harmony. The powdery synthesizer is actually coming from his electric guitar, run through a computer program that McLaughlin built over a period of two decades using sine waves, oscillators and filters, in an attempt to capture what he has called âa particular aspect of my inner music.â RUSSONELLO
