I don't have too many thoughts for Alfred Quinque, except that John was wild for using title "Saint of Patience" for the first person to kill himself
#alfred quinque#tlt#the locked tomb#i often think of the saint's names and i think john was full of shit when he came up with them

I think they fucked if you even care 💅
#like the tridentarii sisters definitely did#the only reason why Augustine can dodge the brocon accusations is because he killed Alfred pre canon#killing and cannibalizing your brother's soul and then mourning him for 10.000 years is basically gay sex#I think merging souls with your cousin is also sex btw#the locked tomb#no I have not read nona the ninth yet but I have eyes#augustine the first#alfred quinque#ianthe tridentarius#coronabeth tridentarius#tridentariicest#quinquecest

There is no way of softening this. Coronabeth Tridentarius has already been radicalised.
Camilla Hect's opinion is that the whole Tridentarii stratagem was the initiative of Ianthe Tridentarius. Though I was taken in by the twins' swindle I am not taken in by this. Coronabeth Tridentarius has never been party to anything she did not want to do, and never successfully carried out a plan she didn't think up first.
"In point of fact that's not actually Crown's boyfriend, Nona, it's her sister, but I don't think anyone could blame you for getting confused."
All four pairs of their eyes belonged to other people. Pyrrha's deep brown eyes really came from her dead best friend, and Camilla's clear grey eyes should have really been Palamedes's, and vice versa with his wintertime irises ... "You see," Palamedes had said to her, "the eyes are a dead giveaway. When you give yourself to someone else, their soul shows in yours by the eye colour; that's why you'll never see me looking out of Camilla's face with my own eyes again."
"He's going to know, Hect. You're killing each other."
"It's our choice."
"He's going to ask."
"Do what you're good at," said Camilla. "Lie."
"Hect, you're not listening. It's killing him too - ."
"It was good," said Camilla, and her eyes closed. "It was good. We were happy."
"I don't let go," said Camilla. "It's my one thing."
Thinking about the Lyctors and their cavs.
#It's funny how the second gen all managed to subvert the first Lyctor's fates in different ways.#Ianthe ate Babs and extracted Corona from BOE. Harrow kept from absorbing Gideon through any means necessary. Cam and Pal Pauled.#I've seen posts talking about Mercy/Harrow parallels before but even the tiny peeks we get into their cavs are SO#the locked tomb#harrow the ninth my beloved#tlt spoilers#htn spoilers#harrowhark nonagesimus#ianthe tridentarius#palamedes sextus#mercymorn the first#augustine the first#gideon the first#gideon nav#coronabeth tridentarius#camilla hect#cristabel oct#alfred quinque#pyrrha dve#I was tempted to do little branching things relating everything Augustine said about Cristabel to Gideon but refrained.#(kind to children->one of them definitely etc)#The way I knew exactly where all the quotes were except for then ntn ones. Still need to memorize it lol

Imagine the unbearable pain of Alfred Quinque. Only person in the commune with a Real Job. I'd have killed myself way earlier.

It's not talked about as much as lines such as "you never got rid of being so absolutely fucking goddamn sad" or "I gave you my whole life" etc, but this quote by Augustine has always struck me hands-down as one of the most devastating sentences in the entire series. Imagine torturing yourself for TEN THOUSAND YEARS with the belief that you could have saved your little brother's life if you'd just had a few more minutes. Talk about a living hell. The only surprising thing to me about the lyctors is that they didn't snap and try to kill God sooner.
#the locked tomb series#tlt#the locked tomb#augustine the first#alfred quinque#what if you could obtain nearly limitless power#but at the cost of eternal suffering#ugh!!

really interesting to me how htn interacts with fratricide foundation mythology on a subtextual level. we’re led to believe, early in htn, that augustine (as harrow explicitly writes in her notes) “killed [his] own brother” in a sort of cain or romulus style that laid the groundwork that lyctorhood stands on, being that he was the first to ascend. but as it progresses, we learn a little bit more about alfred through the words of the lyctors and john: he was “led astray”, cristabel was a “bad influence”, and augustine seems to outright blame cristabel (and mercy, by extension) for the circumstances surrounding alfred’s death in the first place. he did not want lyctorhood at the expense of his cavalier (and no one did!). as augustine refuses mercy’s suicide pact at the end of the novel, even telling her that she picked the wrong man to enter into one with, it’s evident lyctorhood in fact was not founded on fratricide, at least not in the traditional sense, but it is on suicide. just like harrow’s circumstance, just like mercy’s — and the fact that he didn’t actually kill his own flesh and blood in a display of might is all the more horrifying

R.I.P. to Jod but I'm different. If Mercymorn had confronted me about the secrets of lyctorhood, I simply would've reminded her that Alfred and Cristabel's suicide pact forced both her and Augustine to perform the eightfold word in an unplanned emergency, then made up some bullshit about that ruining my plan to explain the truth at the last minute before anybody actually got sacrificed Abraham-and-Isaac style.
Plus, then I get to explain that I had to let the rest of the lyctors kill their cavaliers because I loved Mercymorn and Augustine so much that I couldn't bare telling them the truth after the fact, that would only be more hurtful. Now it's their fault half their friends had to murder the other half.
Perfect A+ Jod level bullshit.
No way telling Mercymorn it's basically all Cristabel's fault backfires on me at all. 0% risk of consequences for sure.
