blah blah we’ve all heard the discourse about whether or not mercymorn dyes her hair and what shade of pink/red/orange it is etc etc etc. yawn. we’ve been there and done that. instead i would like to humbly propose that mercy’s hair is in fact natural and it is augustine who dyes his hair. i think he bleaches his hair an UNGODLY amount per millennia and then magicks it back to looking healthy. i think that in alecto the ninth we’re going to see a picture of alfred quinque with beautifully luscious jet black locks, and all of a sudden harrow and gideon will remember that as a matter of fact augustine DID get dark roots once a month, which they never paid attention to at the time on account of The Horrors. i think augustine the first is kind of like if homelander was the I’m Just Ken flavor of bottle blond

I don't have too many thoughts for Alfred Quinque, except that John was wild for using title "Saint of Patience" for the first person to kill himself

Imagine the unbearable pain of Alfred Quinque. Only person in the commune with a Real Job. I'd have killed myself way earlier.

It's not talked about as much as lines such as "you never got rid of being so absolutely fucking goddamn sad" or "I gave you my whole life" etc, but this quote by Augustine has always struck me hands-down as one of the most devastating sentences in the entire series. Imagine torturing yourself for TEN THOUSAND YEARS with the belief that you could have saved your little brother's life if you'd just had a few more minutes. Talk about a living hell. The only surprising thing to me about the lyctors is that they didn't snap and try to kill God sooner.

R.I.P. to Jod but I'm different. If Mercymorn had confronted me about the secrets of lyctorhood, I simply would've reminded her that Alfred and Cristabel's suicide pact forced both her and Augustine to perform the eightfold word in an unplanned emergency, then made up some bullshit about that ruining my plan to explain the truth at the last minute before anybody actually got sacrificed Abraham-and-Isaac style.
Plus, then I get to explain that I had to let the rest of the lyctors kill their cavaliers because I loved Mercymorn and Augustine so much that I couldn't bare telling them the truth after the fact, that would only be more hurtful. Now it's their fault half their friends had to murder the other half.
Perfect A+ Jod level bullshit.
No way telling Mercymorn it's basically all Cristabel's fault backfires on me at all. 0% risk of consequences for sure.

Ok I definitely wanna have Ianthe as Augustine and Corona as Alfred. But there’s two routes to go down with Cam and Pal:
Palamedes as Gideon (original flavor) and Camilla as Pyrrha- parallels work, both with being Nona’s caretakers and with occasionally swapping who’s in control of the body. I could also definitely see them having a similar dynamic with Wake as G+P do, in love with the same person except they’re maybe more aware of it. I think they would write each other letters and it’d be super angsty and sad etc
Palamedes as Mercymorn and Camilla as Cristabel- Funniest shit I’ve ever thought of in my life. Characters don’t mesh well but just imagine the constant bickering with Ianthe. Peak
Also, you get Augustine and Alfred as the weirdly codependent highly extravagant siblings, and either Mercy/Cris or Gideon/Pyrrha as hyper-competent similarly codependent colleagues and cousins. You know what I think it should be Mercy and Cris. They deserve to be fucked up scientists
Oh, and one more thing: Isaac is Cytherea.
Just think about that.
Ok ok I agree that them as Mercy/Cris is amazing and hilarious and the way it should be but consider: then as Gideon/Pyrrha and Dulcie is Wake

POOR OLD SISYPHUS, POOR OLD US.
[the locked tomb. mercymorn and augustine get stuck in a time loop. 8.1k.]
““cristabel died yesterday,” she says, emphatically. “or. today?” she gnaws on her lip, an old, absentminded habit that she hasn’t quite managed to kick as her heart thrums in her chest. she expects augustine’s lips to curl in a smile. it’s what he’s been waiting for — mercymorn’s complete and utter break from reality. she loves him just about as much as she loves being first at something. when she and cristabel had mastered augustine and alfred’s lab in record time, mercymorn had carried that feeling for a week, lightness in her step and a smirk on her lips. if she was in his position she would laugh. augustine doesn’t react as she expects — no smirk blooms on his lips (slowly, like the cheshire cat) and there’s no light in his eyes as he realizes that he’s gotten the better of her. instead, he heaves a heavy sigh and opens the door to his and alfred’s quarters wide. well, you’d better come in,” he says.” or; the morning after their cavaliers die, mercymorn and augustine wake up to find them alive again. and again. and again.
author reveals finally happened for the lyctor exchange and now i get to talk about my piece!! i'm so so proud of this piece, mostly bc whatever mercymorn and augustine have going on makes me want to study them with a microscope and that's basically all this fic is. they make me feel like biting glass for realsies
read ‘poor old sisyphus, poor old us.’ here on ao3!

a line in Nona that I think about regularly is when Pyrrha says she’d have better luck pimping out Augustine and Alfred than she would pimping out Camilla and Palamedes. Hey Pyrrha what does that MEAN.
WHO doesn't think about it. It's such a CHARGED line. The implications:
Augustine and Alfred were both sluts. Yeah that tracks
At some point in the few centuries pre-lyctorhood there was a honeypot mission, or something else, that required Pyrrha to get favours out of someone (?) by offering up Alfred and/or Augustine for sex
"Pimping out" implies that Pyrrha gained something from it
Both of them went with it so either they owed Pyrrha (the web of sexual favours tightens!) or they also got a cut of the metaphorical reward
WHO WERE THEY PIMPED OUT TO?
Questions that haunt me at night
