Augustine and Mercymorn is like: You’ve heard of open marriages before now get ready for open divorce!

So I was thinking, about the Lyctors and their Sainthood titles. And while yes, we know they were named for their cavs, I think they were also named for the parts of them that their cavs brought out.

For Mercymorne, there was only one person who ever truly brought her Joy. G1deon had a very certain person who brought out in him a sense of Duty. Augustine’s brother taught him Patience, etc. They were named for the parts of themselves brought to light by their cavs.

Even Ianthe, who only through Babs’ sacrifice and becoming a lyctor, could she finally get the attention and individual notoriety, the Awe, she’d been so deeply desiring. And it’s a whole different conversation if you want to argue that her true cav is her sister.

And thus I present to you Harrowhark the First, the Saint of Comedy, because there was only one person who could truly make Harrow smile.

““cristabel died yesterday,” she says, emphatically. “or. today?” she gnaws on her lip, an old, absentminded habit that she hasn’t quite managed to kick as her heart thrums in her chest. she expects augustine’s lips to curl in a smile. it’s what he’s been waiting for — mercymorn’s complete and utter break from reality. she loves him just about as much as she loves being first at something. when she and cristabel had mastered augustine and alfred’s lab in record time, mercymorn had carried that feeling for a week, lightness in her step and a smirk on her lips. if she was in his position she would laugh. augustine doesn’t react as she expects — no smirk blooms on his lips (slowly, like the cheshire cat) and there’s no light in his eyes as he realizes that he’s gotten the better of her. instead, he heaves a heavy sigh and opens the door to his and alfred’s quarters wide. “well, you’d better come in,” he says.” or; the morning after their cavaliers die, mercymorn and augustine wake up to find them alive again. and again. and again.

author reveals finally happened for the lyctor exchange and now i get to talk about my piece!! i'm so so proud of this piece, mostly bc whatever mercymorn and augustine have going on makes me want to study them with a microscope and that's basically all this fic is. they make me feel like biting glass for realsies

my section for augustine (and mercymorn) are pretty brief, since for the others I was taking down any information that hinted at their personality, but we know them! so i didn't have to do that! nonetheless, here are all my notes on what seemed like relevant information about augustine during my reread:

I was thinking about how we don't actually know how Pyrrha died. Just that by her own telling, she "was killed," and that she was the first cavalier to die outside Cristabel and Alfred's suicide pact.

Before Nona came out, I suspected Gideon the First must have killed her, probably with her consent. That seems unlikely to me now, with everything we've learned about them in Nona.

Also before Nona came out, I came to the conclusion that the lyctors demanded John kill Alecto following a "great attack" on Canaan House and the revelation of what a Resurrection Beast is. Based on Mercymorn's assumption that Alecto was a freak who would attack her on sight, I also highly suspected that Alecto either participated in or perpetrated the attack on Canaan House, thus proving herself beyond a shadow of a doubt to be untamed and dangerous in a way that not even John could talk his way out of.

I just recently noticed a detail in Nona the Ninth that might slot all this together like puzzle pieces:

Pyrrha has seen something very like Nona's tantrums before, and that memory scares her. Enough that she avoids even thinking about it.

I think Alecto may have killed Pyrrha.

the love triangle in TLT is so funny because it's not even a true love triangle. it's like a shape that hasn't even been invented yet. first you've got Ianthe, who thinks Harrow is totally into her but isn't. and Harrow is into Gideon but also this really sexy corpse. the sexy corpse was maybe probably in a relationship with Gideon's dad who's also the leader of the solar system. he hooks up with his officers sometimes and has hooked up with his best friends over the last 10,000 years because they were bored. Ianthe also has this weirdly borderline incestuous relationship with Coronabeth but Coronabeth is in love with Judith who had a crush on her now-dead cavalier. the only ones who've got a semi-normal relationship are Camilla and Palamedes and even then they had a weird poly thing with Dulcinea even though they never met her in person. and they have another weird poly thing with Pyrrha but by that point they're sharing a body. then they decide to do a mutual suicide/soul binding ritual and become a whole new person in Camilla's body. also they're second cousins. oh Pyrrha also had a weird poly thing with her necro and Gideon's biomom/the leader of the rebellion who's fighting against Gideon's biodad. I don't even have time to unpack all that and that doesn't even cover half of the shit happening here. there's also the whole Cytherea thing
