Got him strung up despite the thicker elastic.

He's a very lovely doll and it's weird to finally have something in person that I've only seen in photos for over a decade. This is becoming a trend for me huh.

The posing is not as good as I'd imagined 😅 Definitely needs some sueding.

Now the face ... needs the eyes and mouth cleaned up but I don't want to hack at that with an xacto yet. I need some more delicate filing tools maybe. Or just another bout of bravery outta nowhere.

Unoa Freak 1, 2 and 3 [Review]

Summary

The Unoa Freak series is specifically written to celebrate and discuss Unoa dolls. Created in 2003 by Gentaro Araki, founder of Alchemic Labo, they were one of the first BJD available on the market. They are not as popular as they once were but Unoa dolls come in many common sizes, making these books a great resource to this day. The books also contain tutorials on face-ups, manicures, modding, stringing and more.

These books have been created with so much love and creativity, from the beautifully illustrated covers, to the fashion editorial style spreads for the patterns. They are one of my favourites to take off the shelf just to flick through the pages.

The number of patterns varies by book and each one has been created by different artists, so do take a look at the tables below before purchasing.

Pros

Gorgeous cover art with a partially transparent layer

A real must if you love Unoa dolls

Minimal instructions for the patterns, sometimes just a couple of drawings

The patterns in the book don’t work for every size of Unoa doll, usually each pattern is designed for a particular body sculpt (cries in Unoa Zero)

My copy of UF2 had a few pages come loose from the binding - not sure if it's a common problem but something to keep in mind

Final thoughts

I don’t think I would recommend these as pattern books for beginners, as the patterns are sized so specifically and the instructions are quite minimal, but if you are an experienced sewer I think you will enjoy the variety of styles here. My main reason for recommending these books wouldn't be the patterns though - it's the peek into BJD history that make them special. I think they are a great addition to any bookshelf.

I have changed Milo's hands but Aya took over the camera.

Aya is a legit Unoa Lusis NS 1.5. She came second hand from DOA.

She has three faceplates. Madoromi (sleepy) is my fave one.

Unoa boy body from evilbay arrived!! I wasn't sure how he could fit in a box that small but he was in there, wrapped in a nice pillowcase I hope the seller won't regret losing.

So I think the hip caps were out because he was dangling like a wind chime from loose elastics.

Into the dirty boys bowl to be SCRUBBED with rubbing alcohol and then washed up. Elastics went into the trash. He really was not dirty at all. And the black paint on the nails came right off.

Some before and afters. I gathered enough courage to shave all the pour spouts/gates off with an xacto.

He matches the L-Bi dreaming face I got from Dollyteria!! Using a Buff headback I got a while back.

Just gotta wait for the channels to dry out before I restring him with fresh elastic. I don't have any thin stuff but I think I can do him with single strands of the thick stuff, we'll see. 🤞

I’ve had a ton of chain and other jewelry bits stashed away and finally decided to do something about using it. xD Ended up making a pile of chain necklace pieces for myself and one of my friends. also made a chainmail necklace to burn through moar jump rings.
