Star Trek the Motion Picture premiered on December 8, 1979. Paramount had planned to launch a new television network and was going to relaunch Star Trek as Star Trek Phase II as the part of its initial programming. When the network fell apart, Paramount decided to rework Phase II into a movie. The motion picture introduced new Star Trek and Klingon themes by Jerry Goldsmith as well as a new look for the Klingons. New uniforms were introduced in this film, but they were hated and discarded for following films. Until the movie franchise was rebooted in 2009, this film had the longest run time of all the Star Trek films. Until Superman (1980) was released, it was the most expensive film made. It was the only Star Trek film in the franchise to be rated G. The film brought back the crew from the TV series James T Kirk (William Shatner), Spock (a reluctant Leonard Nimoy), Dr McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Scotty (James Doohan), Sulu (George Takei), Dr Chapel (Majel Barrett), Chekov (Walter Koenig), Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) and Janice Rand (Grace Lee Whitney). The movie introduced the new characters Decker (Stephen Collins) and Ilia (Persis Khambatta). Paramount and Director Robert Wise were annoyed by Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry's constant script rewrites and story demands. The film was mostly savaged by critics and the public, but financially successful. Paramount was onboard for a sequel as long as Roddenberry was involved in name only. The events of the film took place during 2273. ("Star Trek the Motion Picture", Movie, Event)

Arthur Rackham might be the epitome of the Golden Age illustrators for many folks, but I feel that Edmond Dulac had the most success producing work for more conventional literature. Rackham, Ford and so on were illustrators of fairy stories; one of Dulac’s first major commissions was to illustrate Jane Eyre and the other Bronte novels. He did illustrated fairy tales, including one full volume of Hans Christian Anderson, but also tackled Shakespeare, The Arabian Nights and The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. That last, a portfolio of 20 images, is probably his best-known work (though the dude did design stamps and currency too, that doesn’t seem like the same sort of recognizability, but does point to the scope of his mainstream success).
This is the David Larkin-edited Dulac (1975) and it focuses mostly on his more fantastic work. He shares something of Rackham’s murky textures and rich colors, but where Rackham taps some nostalgic notion of Britain’s rural life, Dulac is decidedly Orientalist in his designs and ornamentation. Most Golden Age illustrators seem keen to fill space, but Dulac is happy to let it stay empty, to show of its spotty tones. The alchemist on the cover is a good example of that. His monsters, what few there are, are reasonable-looking for the most part. No octopus tentacle beards here.
Despite that, Dulac has some clear lines of descent. Charles Vess is an obvious exponent as is, I think, Alan Lee. Ellie Jo Livingston counts him as a big influence as well. She’s probably painting more than enough monsters to make up for Dulac’s relative lack of them!

Last Halloween: Chapter 30
Summary: After a tragedy involving Joel happened on Halloween one year prior, the town now shuns him while ignoring the details of the now closed case. You are seemingly the only one to offer empathy to a man the town is making out to be a monster.
Pairing: Joel Miller x f!reader
One Week Later
"After seven excruciating days, the manhunt for Victor Alan Champagne of Haddonfield is over. Police have him in their custody and he is being held at the Livingston County Correctional Facility. Champagne is accused of kidnapping, assault, home invasion and attempted murder. One year ago his brother, John Champagne, died in an attempted car jacking as he was attempting to strangle the victim."
You would never forget the face of the news woman who recited the fate of Vic Champagne on television that November morning. As icing on the cake, she further freed Joel's name by including the horrific ordeal between him and Johnny the year before. Referring to Joel as the *victim* of an attempted car jacking and assault, rather than the villain as he had been labeled by the town, was a massive win. It seemed to solidify the truth and gave you hope for the future.
Beside you on the couch, Joel just stared at the television. He wasn't smiling or frowning, or showing any real sign of emotion. When he turned to you as the newscaster switched to the next story, he finally edge a smile out of the right side of his lips.
"This is all because of you, ya know," Joel said matter-of-factly.
You shook your head and kissed him before resting his head on your shoulder. "I can't wait to start fresh.. and be able to enjoy some time together without looking over our shoulders."
Joel rubbed your back and left a kiss on the top of your head. "I have to get to work." When you lifted your head he raised his eyebrows. "Dinner tonight?"
"Definitely." You shared another short series of kisses before he rose to his feet to grab his work boots.
You checked your watch, "I have class at nine and then work until four after that."
"I'll be by for my nightly coffee." Joel's eyes turned a little more playful and you smiled wide.
"Mmm.. back to where it all started."
"It'll be a great story to tell the grandkids one day." He raised his eyebrows and you smile back at him even wider. You loved when he made comments like that.
When he winked, you couldn't help it. You threw your arms around him and kissed him until he finally had to pull away with a laugh.
"Will Ronnie really be mad if you're a few minutes late?" You teased.
Joel laughed and looked down the hall. "Tempting."
"I'm kidding."
"You're half kidding."
"I'm half kidding," you agreed, still laughing, "Plus, I think we'd wake everyone up."
"We can go back to my place tonight then," Joel said, "I'll make it up to you."
"Deal." You kissed again and then saw him out the door before wandering back down toward your room. When you heard music coming from Chrissy's room you gave a knock. "Chris?"
There was movement and whispers. You realized there was someone else in the room and you almost called out, "Nevermind," but the door opened before you could.
Chrissy's face peeked between the door frame and the door that she only opened about four or five inches. "Hey."
"Hey," you smirked. "I'll come back later. I didn't know.." you motioned with your finger toward the door and shrugged, silently asking who the mystery person was that accompanied her.
Chrissy managed to slide out of her room in her sports bra and sleep shorts. Amusement and guilt plagued her expression and she looked away for a second.
"This wasn't planned," she started.
"No judgment," you said, putting your hands up, "And you don't have to say anything if you don't want to. But.." you laughed, "I'm very curious now."
"I don't want you to get mad."
"Mad? Why would I be mad?"
Chrissy sighed. "Like I said, things kind of just happened. It was like this lightbulb went off the night that we were all on the town green with you, and then we bumped into each other and went for coffee twice and then drinks a few times over the last couple of weeks. And then, I don't know. I just.. it's a bad friend move."
"Chrissy! Unless Joel snuck back in your window just now, I won't be mad. What? Tell me." Her lead up was killing you, but you also couldn't stop giggling.
"Fuck." Chrissy took a breath. "I.. I'm really into.. I can't believe I'm saying this because I hate cops sometimes."
"Wait! Steve?"
"Fuck. You hate me. I know you dated-"
"No, it's fine!" You bellowed, laughing out loud. "Are you serious?"
She nodded. "I'm sorry. He was so helpful and kind of really came through for all of us, and you and I just thought it was really brave on his part because he could have gotten into so much trouble for helping us like that. But he did the right thing. And then when he was almost killed I.. felt something."
You pouted your bottom lip and then gave your friend a hug. "I'm happy for you."
"It's not weird?"
"No it's not weird. At all."
"I mean we slept with the same guy-"
"I never slept with him."
"What?"
"Nope." You shook your head. "So you're good. Zero weirdness. We had no connection."
Chrissy let out a sigh of relief. "I'm sorry for keeping it from you."
"Don't be." You nodded toward the door with another smirk. "Enjoy."
...
Joel drove in through the gates of the junk yard. It felt a little surreal after all that had happened - and so recently. Still, he and Ronnie had similar feelings on the matter. Life must go on, and the junk yard was Ronnie's meal ticket. It was his business; how he made a living. Joel was on board with getting back to business.
"Hey kid," his boss greeted with a smile after he parked and exited the vehicle. For the first time ever, the two men greeted one another with a long, meaningful hug.
Joel patted him on the back a few times and he looked at him directly when he pulled away. "I'm sorry for all the trouble, Ronnie."
"You have nothing to be sorry for." He shook his head. "You're the best friend and coworker a guy could ask for. I'm sorry for what's happened to you."
"You saved my life."
"I did what you would have done in the same situation." He waved his hand. "Come here. I have something for you."
"For me?" Joel shook his head, "Ronnie, I owe you my life. You don't have to give me anything."
Ronnie waved his hand again and lead the way down to the last bay. He waited for Joel to be next to him before flinging the door upward.
"Ronnie.." Joel shook his head. "You didn't have to.. what is this? Where did you get this?" He slowly enters the garage and placed his hand on the handlebars of a motorcycle.
"I have lots of fun little projects to be done just waiting in the wings." He wiggled his fingers towards the rows of cars in the distance. "I felt bad about them busting up and ruining your other one."
"You didn't have to do this." Joel shook his head, still in awe over the bike as he ran his fingers over the seat next.
"I had fun fixing this thing up," Ronnie told him. "I'm actually a little sad I finished. Reminded me of building a car with father in my younger years. I could spend weeks or months doing this stuff." He held out a single key. "Besides, Joel. You need a little pick-me-up. And I think you and your girl will have a good time cruising around on this thing."
Joel smiled and accepted the key before giving his friend another hug. "You're a good man, Ron."
"You're a good man, Joel."

Favourite movie: i don’t think I can choose one favourite, I have so many, 😅 but I am loving my feel good movies at the moment, so if I have to pick one from that shelf I’ll go for Erin Brockovich.
Favourite tv-show: sanctuary! It has been since I was sixteen and it will probably continue to be so untill I’m old and grey😂
Favourite musical artist: Jess Glynne, I love her music. It’s all so heartbreaking but at the same time it’s not hopeless. And if I ever get the chance I will get tickets to one of her shows because that would be amazing!
Favourite colour: burgundy or just plain old red.
Favourite season: spring! I am currently in the middle of winter and I cannot wait for spring! I want to get outside and grow things, and see all the trees fill up with fresh green, and I am so looking forward to taking a walk after work in the daylight.
Favourite book: can I just say anything by Terry Pratchett, The Elenium series by David Eddings, Spellsinger series by Alan Dean Foster, The Ship Who Sang series by Anne McCaffrey, Watership down by Richard Adam’s, Torey Hayden and Deborah Ellis books are up there too but I will stop there because honestly the list goes on and on😅
Do you have any funko pops? Not currently, I did have Ant Man and Antony at one point but my shelves were getting too cluttered so I gave them away.
Do you play any instruments? Sadly no, although i have always wanted to play the piano, so who knows, maybe I’ll learn in the future.
Do you have any pets? Yes! I have a gorgeous Labrador called Nelson. He comes with me on almost all my walks and is just the bestest boy!
Do you read or write fanfiction? I enjoy doing both! I have been reading for years and now have so many ideas for writing which I can’t wait to start but I just need some time! Saying that I have time off coming up in February which will probably be perfect!
What songs have you had on repeat recently? A couple of songs by Livingston, my brain likes to take his lyrics and attach them to my favourite ships, they just seem to work so well.😆
No pressure tagging @arachniasbride @sweetteaandpie @clintbeifong @hallofhelios @ten-cent-sleuth and if anyone else wants to join in your more then welcome to!

Fun fact: I've started reading Star Trek TOS books this year, and they are a TRIP.
I've read six of them so far: The Vulcan Science Academy Murders by Jean Lorrah, Doctor's Orders by Diane Duane, Strangers from the Sky by Margaret Wander Bonanno, Spock's World by Diane Duane, Sarek by A.C. Crispin, and The Motion Picture novelization by Gene Roddenberry (and also Harold Livingston and Alan Dean Foster since they wrote the screenplay)
I have some Thoughts but this may be long so opinions below the cut!
I can't pick an absolute favorite, they're all so much fun for their own reasons. Objectively, Spock's World and Sarek are the two best, with Spock's World being my favorite of the two. I love any story that takes a long look at the Vulcans- either individual characters or them as a group- and these two do a fantastic job.
The Vulcan Science Academy Murders is not objectively good- the mystery is so easily figured out, some of the book is just a little bit insane, and there's way too many exclamation points- but it is a LOT of fun. Also has a very sweet perspective of Vulcans and the way they care for eachother.
Doctor's Orders is literally just this: Kirk, thinking he'd only be gone an hour, makes McCoy acting captain. Kirk proceeds to go missing. Due to Starfleet regulations, McCoy is stuck as acting captain until Kirk or Starfleet relieves him. (It's very funny watching both McCoy and literally every bridge officer be stressed about this)
My least favorite is probably Strangers from the Sky. It's extremely convoluted- there's a plot where Kirk is having nightmares about a suppressed past memory (a memory that, is being remembered because the events of this memory were recently published as a book), and half of this book is us just. Real-time reading this past memory? Either way, the memory is of the Actual first human-Vulcan meeting- when a Vulcan ship crash landed on Earth before the official first contact. The surviving Vulcans were rescued by a couple kelp farmers, and the story surrounding them is actually really sweet. The Enterprise crew has almost nothing to do with this story, they're only there because of a time travel incident. It really just feels more like the author wanted to tell this story, but because it didn't have any known characters in it, they were forced to involve the TOS cast. Still a decent read, just Very convoluted.
Finally, the Motion Picture novelization. Boy, this really reminded me that there really is not much that happens in this movie, though somehow it's more interesting than the movie. This is not to completely dump on said movie- I don't hate it, but it certainly is my least favorite. The novelization is really cool though because it adds a LOT of context for what Spock is dealing with. We get more of his inner monologue- something I actually wish we could witness better in the movie. V'ger is a really good character foil for Spock- the way V'ger is was Spock's end goal, yet Spock realizes that V'ger nothing like how he actually wants to be.
The word T'hyla is also just. Casually invented in this novelization, with the explicit purpose of describing the relationship between Kirk and Spock. This book ALSO acknowledges rumors of Kirk and Spock dating in a footnote, and has Kirk "address" these rumors (aka make some weird statement that doesn't actually clarify anything). Beginning of this book is a Wild time for Spirk fans.
Anyway I'm waiting on my library to get in the novelization for Wrath of Khan and Search for Spock. I also just picked up the first two volumes of the Year Five comics. Idk how deep I'm gonna get into Star Trek novels, but I'm at the very least still going strong.
Oh yeah I also tend to take photos of passages/lines I enjoyed from these books, lmk if any of y'all want a deeper look into any of these books- I can post the photos of my favorite bits!
#anyway more people should read star trek books they're fun#even if they're completely not canon#if you're out here reading fanfic you can deal with that#star trek#star trek tos#star trek books#diane duane

KAYNAK:
Dr. David D. Burns/ İyi Hissetmek

"Powerful in eloquence, shrewd in counsel" was how Bishop Marbode of Rennes described Countess Ermengarde of Brittany in a poem he dedicated to her around 1096. Ermengarde's mother, also named Ermengarde, was Ralph I's sister and daughter of Lancelin II. Her father was Count Fulk IV of Anjou and Ermengarde was raised at his court. Count Fulk IV was one of the most powerful men of his day and established a thriving intellectual center at his court in Angers. It was here that Ermengarde learned the rudiments of lordship, but also encountered many of the important intellectuals and clergy of the time. She married Count Alan IV of Brittany around 1093. Three years later, she found herself solely in charge of the county as he departed on crusade (likely in the company of Ermengarde's uncle, Ralph). Ermengarde ruled Brittany in his absence and did an admirable job of maintaining political stability of a county which was often plagued with internal fighting. Once Alan returned in 1101, they ruled the county together. Ermengarde appears in virtually every comital act from the period 1101 to 1112. Like countesses in other regions, she was present at law courts, settled disputes, oversaw vassals and made gifts to the church. Nor was Ermengarde a mere spectator to these events. The verbs used to describe these rulings and actions are plural verbs indicating that Ermengarde and Alan ruled together. In particular, Ermengarde was valuable in helping Alan maintain cordial relationships with the church. As we know from the Beaugency lords, counts and lords alike depended upon the church to help them provide stability but also to support their authority.
-Amy Livingstone, Medieval Lives c. 1000-1292: The World of the Beaugency Family
