Solar Crisis (1990)
Solar Crisis has become vastly more interesting over the years. Tim Matheson, Charlton Heston, Jack Palance and Peter Boyle star in this sci-fi adventure with ... umm... effects and music.

This isnt wrong but I find myself having minor quibbles over it including
I'm always going to be upset that Watchmen is Alan Moore's best known work as a writer and not Supreme. My personal favorite is Promethea but that's beside the point.
Watchmen was already originally conceived of as a vehicle for the Charlton characters recently acquired by DC (Captain Atom, Blue Beetle, Question, Peacemaker, etc.) before editorial decided they want to fold them in with the main line post-Crisis.

Kibbe Body Types, Part 2: David Duchovny
Tumblr media
Gillian Anderson's Kibbe analysis here; beginner's guide here.
Okay.
So.
We're going to have to do this analysis a little differently.
David Kibbe has a thorough quiz to type your body correctly... if you're a woman. So... I'm going to have to go around the mulberry bush a bit to arrive at David Duchovny's Kibbe Type.
...Why don't you tag along with me? We'll find out together.
(Spoiler: I already know his Type.)
KIBBE BODY TYPES-- BUT FOR MEN
Tumblr media
(**Note**: You can skip this section if extra reading isn't your thing.)
Kibbe identifies female bodies through their height, their hips, their chest, their waist, and their shoulders. However, male bodies are a whole different ballgame: width is the key measure-- of greater importance even than height-- as well as the softness or "fleshiness" of the frame.
THANKFULLY, Aly Art's got my back with this video.
Now: we must identify the yin-- soft, delicate, short, light-- qualities and separate them from the yang-- strong, tall, lean, vertical, angular, sharp-- qualities. Everybody has a blend of those two traits slapped on their skeletons; but Kibbe tried (tries) to keep it as simple as possible.
There are five basic body types; and those five types are divided into yang (sharp) and yin (soft) variants.
Dramatics-- 100% yang energy: tall, lean, strong, hard. They look angular and heavy. Typically have smaller eyes, prominent nose and chin, and thin lips.
Benedict Cumberbatch, Sean Connery, Charlton Heston, Ricardo Montalban, Errol Flyn, Daniel Craig
Soft Dramatics-- predominant yang energy with some yin added: softness and fleshiness added to their sharp, angular frame.
Dean Martin, Christian Bale, Matthew McConoughy, John Travolta, Nicholas Cage, Clark Gable
Flamboyant Naturals-- strong and hard, but with wide, blunted edges. They appear sporty or athletic: moderate to tall height, wider shoulders, and slimmer waists and hips.
Calvin Klein, Dick Van Dyke, Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood, Tom Selleck (maybe), Michael Landon (maybe), Joe Biden
Soft Naturals-- like the FNs, they are wide, and blunted; but their width is softened by added fleshiness, appearing slightly less tall, less dense and more delicate. They sport plusher, softer cheeks, lips, torso, and thighs; and often appear "cuter" than FNs, Ds, and SDs.
Alan Alda, OJ Simpson, John Wayne, Robert Redford, Robert Conrad, Bing Crosby, Tom Cruise, George Clooney, Gene Kelly, Brad Pit, Gene Hackman
Dramatic Classics-- is an even, "average" mixture of yin and yang elements with a slightly more dominant yang presence. They have a very blended bone structure with tauter cheeks and more predominant facial features.
Carey Grant, John Ham
Soft Classics-- is an even, "average" mixture of yin and yang elements with a slightly more delicate yin presence. They have a very blended bone structure with softer lips and fleshier cheeks.
John Slattery, John Glenn, Gregory Peck, Bryant Gumbel
Romantics-- is 100% yin: smaller, shorter, softer, more delicate. No sharp angles. They appear gentler, less harsh, less "brutally" masculine than their Dramatic and Natural counterparts.
Colin Firth, Leonardo DiCaprio, Elijah Wood, Simon Baker, Richard Gere, Michael Jackson, Omar Shereef, Billy Dee Williams, Elvis Presley
Theatrical Romantics-- is 100% yin with a taut touch of yang to their features: narrow, delicate bones instead of fully-rounded, softly-widened angles.
David Kibbe, Orlando Bloom, Prince, Johnny Depp
Flamboyant Gamines-- an uneven mixture of yin and yang elements, with more pronounced yang in their angularity and sharpness. They have small, rectangular muscularity: angular facial bones, smaller shoulders and torso, some tautness to their physique.
Jimmy Kimmel, Frank Sinatra, Neil Patrick Harris
Soft Gamines-- an uneven mixture of yin and yang elements, with more pronounced yin in their rounded curves and softness. They appear the most "cute" of the types: an even smaller Gamine, with softer cheeks, softer noses, softer lips, bigger eyes, smaller hands, etc.
Fred Astaire, Robert Downy Jr.
THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE MONOTONE
Tumblr media
David's frame is dominated by prominent, long vertical lines-- dare I say, blunt edges?-- and shoulders that appear-- or are?-- wider because of his narrow waist and hips.
Using this previous post as a rough guide to map out his features, DD has pronounced yin-- softer cheeks, rounder nose, softened jawbone, softer flesh over his muscles-- but not enough to cover or dominate the long, strong bones in his frame and overall musculature.
I have my suspicions, and they swing Soft Natural (not enough T-bone shoulder to fit Flamboyant Natural); but let's put this theory to the test.
COMPARISON IS OUR REPRIEVE AND JOY
But you ask: how are we going to type the Man, the Myth, the Monotone without a handy dandy reference guide?
Easy peasy. We compare him to other body types and notate the differences.
David and Gamines
We're eliminating Gamines first because their shorter lines, shorter stature, and more angular or rounded bodies are in direct opposition to his longer, denser lines.
Compared to DD's wider shoulders, denser frame, and squarer facial features, Jimmy Kimmel and Lucy Liu (and Theatrical Romantic Gillian Anderson) appear more"weightless", angular, and narrow.
Tumblr media
Soft Gamine Winona Ryder and Halle Berry appear weightless as well; but their angular features are tempered by an added layer of softness that corresponds with the fleshiness of David's face.
Tumblr media
David and Romantics
We have a look-a-like for this section: Richard Gere, a pure Romantic.
Compared to DD's wide shoulders, slim torso and hips, and more defined musculature (even at his skinniest), Richard is composed of rounded curves, more delicate facial and skeletal bones, and a soft layer of flesh over his torso, arms, thighs, and legs. Even at Richard's fittest, there was still a softness present in his body that could not be chiseled away or hidden.
Tumblr media
The two Romantic Type women below-- Drew Barrymore, pure Romantic; Gillian Anderson, Theatrical Romantic-- again highlight the density of David's structure, bringing out a "heavier" presence than the Gamines had previously.
Tumblr media
David and Classics
Is David a Classic Type? Frankly, no-- his bones are too long and dense to be moderate and balanced; and he, even more frankly, looks terrible in very quaffed, groomed, and buttoned-up outfits.
Compared to DD's length and width, Dramatic Classics appear more proportionate, their touch of sharpness blending in with-- not rivaling-- the balance of their frames. DC Carey Grant's more balanced edges bring out the angles in DD's face, more so than the Gamines or Romantics did.
Tumblr media
By contrast, Soft Classics' proportionate frames contain a touch of softness-- Meryl Streep's yin calls forth David's, appearing more rounded instead of angular or blunt.
Tumblr media
David and Dramatics
Compared to David, Dramatics' structure is more elongated, narrow, and angular. Dramatic Benedict Cumberbatch has sharper, more prominent features; less width across his shoulders and torso; and barely any yin to speak of in his face.
(I also suspicion Tea Leoni as a Dramatic; so sneaked her in here.)
Tumblr media
Soft Dramatics have the elongated sharpness of the Dramatics with a soft, fleshy padding over the tautness of their features. Compared to SD Christian Bale's sharpness-in-spite-of-his-softness, DD's softer, blunter edges become more obvious.
Tumblr media
David and Naturals
And last but not least, we reach the native soil of David Duchovny's body type.
Flamboyant Naturals are a close but not perfect match-- their elongated, blunt width not only matches but exceeds DD's shoulders, torso, arms, legs, and facial features. FN Harrison Ford looks denser, more muscular, and even more athletic when compared to his softer brother from a different mother.
Tumblr media
Soft Naturals: finally, David is home! Soft Naturals have the width and length of the FNs Types softened and slightly moderated by an added, pronounced yin quality. Their face, lips, arms, torso, and slim waist appear less blunt (if no less wide); and the dense musculature of their frame is less noticeable in comparison.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LINES, SILHOUETTES, AND OTHER FASHION ADVICE
Now that David's found his SN kind, I shall pack him up a little box lunch of good wardrobe advice to take with him. ...Or that was the theory, except it is notoriously hard to get my hands on Kibbe Body Type advice for men.
Tumblr media
I shall do my best to transcribe and transform Aly Art's excerpts (here) from David Kibbe's Metamorphosis book:
"Soft Natural: it is the overall combination of the very soft yin with the yang undercurrent. Slightly soft and fleshy body type on an angular frame combined with an appealing, innocent essence.
Tumblr media
Height: moderate.... Bone structure: slightly angular bones, slightly broad shoulders, moderate to slightly short limbs, slightly leggy look also possible. Blunt or small and irregular facial contours-- nose, cheekbones, and jawline. Hands and feet are moderate and fleshy, or slightly small and wide. Body type: slightly soft..... Facial features: full and rounded. Round eyes, round eyes, full lips, soft cheeks. Nose tends small and wide; or slightly irregular, blunt or wide. If overweight, the body tends to become extremely soft and fleshy, with the waist thickening. The upper hips, arms, and thighs tend to collect excess weight most rapidly.
"Physically, you are basically angular in bone structure-- although this is softened by a fleshy body type and full facial features.... To disperse your soft yin undercurrent..., we want to develop an appearance that could best be described as fresh and sensual....
Tumblr media
"Shape: Asymmetric and irregular curves-- elongated ovals, wide circles, ellipticals, and so on. Relaxed geometrics with rounded edges, easy swirls. You might not look as good in sharp geometrics; in wide, chunky, and boxy shapes; in plain, symmetrical shapes; in overly ornate shapes.
Tumblr media
"Line and silhouette: unconstructed silhouette with shaping, particularly at waist. Relaxed lines with subtle drape and flow, particularly bias cuts.
Tumblr media
You might not look as good in wide, shapeless silhouettes; in sharp, severe silhouettes; in symmetrical silhouettes; in fitted silhouettes.
Tumblr media
"Details: details should be loose, relaxed, delicate, slightly intricate, and very creative. Any detail that suggests a bit of antique or the earth is excellent. Shoulders should not be sharp or stiff. Necklines should be loose and soft, not closed, restricted, or fussy. Simple draped necklines; soft cowls; soft notched collars; clean lapels; shawl collars; and so on. Waist should be defined, although loosely: there can be a slightly blousy effect with the top draped over the waistline, or a slightly dropped waist as long as the silhouette is fluid. Gathers and falls should be deep, full, and soft; sleeves can be full and flowing, or gently tapered at the wrist with minimum detail.
"Trim should be delicate and antique, shearing applique, and so on. You might not look as good in sharply tailored detail, in no detail, in overly fitted and fussy detail, in animated, perky detail."
Tumblr media
Conclusion
Tumblr media
David Duchovny's gonna do and wear what he's gonna do and wear. And that's just fine.
Thanks for reading~
And take care of yourselves.
Tumblr media
Enjoy!

I was today years old when I learned the actor Alan Young played David Philby in the 1960 movie "the time Machine" and played the flower shop clerk in the 2002 version.
I love both so now I'm watching both, in order.
Looking into this more, a ton of movies I like have done this with their remakes.
War of The Worlds 1953/2005, Gene Barry and Ann Robinson. Cape Fear 1962/1991, Robert Mitchum And Gregory Peck. Planet of The Apes 1968/2001, Charlton Heston. and so many more but those I already knew.

Who's Who In The DC Universe #1: Adam Strange, Aegeus, Air Wave I, Air Wave II
Adam Strange by Carmine Infantino and Murphy Anderson
Adam was fleeing from South American natives when he was struck by the Zeta Beam, a “beam of energy sent from the planet Rann in hopes of communicating” with Earth
The Zeta Beam teleported Adam to Rann instead
Adam meets a scientist named Sardath and Alanna, his daughter
Adam became the Rann’s first citizen and savior and later married Alanna
Rann is a planet of contradictions: “Some of its divided city-states possesses science far in advance of Earth, while others exist in almost barbaric splendor”
Adam teleports back to Earth whenever the Zeta Beam wears off, he then has to calculate where the next Zeta Beam will strike (always south of the equator) to return to Rann
I’ve always loved Adam Strange. How can you not enjoy an archaeologist who has space adventures? I’d recommend the Adam Strange miniseries that came out shortly before Infinite Crisis (no, not the Rann-Thanagar War mini-series, the “Adam Strange” mini-series that preceded it. It was excellent!
Aegeus by Don Heck
A Greek national who was planning acts of terrorism when he met Bellerophon (yes, the one from Greek mythology). Bellerophon had become an Olympian-hater so he gave Aegeus a magical bow and arrow, six daggers of Vulcan (shouldn’t he be called Hephaestus (?), and Pegasus. Aegeus then decided to pick a fight with Wonder Woman and the Amazons. It doesn’t end well for him.
For such a long-running character, Wonder Woman’s rogue gallery does not have the depth of a Flash, a Batman, or a Spider-Man. Aegeus is D list. Has he even been seen post-Crisis?
Air-Wave I and Air Wave II by Alex Saviuk & Dick Giordano
Did you know Hal Jordan’s cousins were heroes? And not of the Green Lantern variety?
Lawrence (Larry) Jordan was a native of Earth-2. He developed a helmet and belt that allowed him to into any radio wave, project his voice through radio waves, among other abilities. He created the Air Wave persona, battled nazis, and joined the All-Star Squadron.
Larry traveled to Earth-1 under “unknown circumstances”, became a district attorney, married a woman named Helen, and has a son named Harold (Hal). No, not that Hal Jordan.
Criminals later shot and killed Larry as revenge against his crusades as a district attorney.
Hal inherited the Air Wave equipment and persona from his father.
His mother had a breakdown after the murder of his father and was confined to an institution. Hal was taken in by his cousins, Jack and Jan Jordan.
Hal received some coaching on heroics from his cousin Hal (yes, that Hal), Green Arrow, and Black Canary.
The only appearances of either Air Wave that I’ve read were when Larry or Hal made appearances in the All-Star Squadron or JSA series. They were okay.
I suppose a quick detour is needed for younger readers about the various earths that will be mentioned in the Who’s Who:
Earth-1: The earth of the Silver Age heroes to 1985/1986: the home of Barry, Hal, Katar, Shayera, etc
Earth-2: The home of the Golden Age/original versions of DC’s iconic heroes: Alan Scott, Jay Garrick, Carter Hall. Also, the home of the Justice Society, All-Star Squadron, Infinity Inc, etc. Bruce, Clark, and Diana among other will have versions of themselves on both Earth-1 and Earth-2. The difference is the Earth-2 versions can age, marry, and have children while the Earth-1 versions stayed young and single.
There were multiple other earths, this is off the top of my head so the designations may be wrong, but a few more were:4
Earth-3: The home of the Crime Syndicate (reverse world where the Justice League are evil, and the villains are the good guys)
Earth-F: Home of the Fawcett heroes
Earth-C: Home of the Charlton heroes
Earth-Q: Home of the Quality heroes
DC simply created another earth when they bought out another company and then plopped the newly acquired characters on it rather than try to insert the characters on a prior earth. Crossovers between earths were frequent. DC eventually decided the continuity was too complicated and thus the Crisis on Infinite Earths was born. I don’t know, I was nine years old when the Crisis began and I understood the continuity just fine, so how complicated could it be?

Crimes That Shook Britain (Wales)
Tumblr media
Murder of Rebecca Aylward On 25 October 2010, Rebecca Aylward, 15, awoke on 6am, did her make-up, put on new clothes. She was excited about meeting ex-boyfriend Joshua Davies, 16, hoping they'd rekindle their relationship.
But Davies hated Rebecca. With mates he met on Sundays for breakfast, he'd discussed ways to kill her - poisoning, drowning, pushing her off a cliff.
In the end, that rainy morning, Davies lured her to secluded woods near Aberkenfig, Bridgend, and hit her over the head with a rock. Rebecca's distraught family reported her missing and her body was found the next day.
And Joshua Davies was arrested. His murder trial heard he'd killed Rebecca over a bet for a free breakfast. A mate had said he'd buy him a 'Full English' if he carried out his threats. Davies was convicted, jailed for life to serve a minimum term of 14 years in prison.
In 2018, Davies finally admitted to the murder to prison officers.

Murder of Karen Price In 1989, workmen found a rolled-up carpet while digging up a garden in Cardiff's Riverside area. Inside were the remains of a girl. Forensic experts made a clay reconstruction of the girl's head, identifying her as Karen Price, 15, who'd disappeared from a children's home in July 1981.
Back then, the basement flat where her body had been found was occupied by Alan Charlton. In 1991, Charlton and another man, Idris Ali - accused of being Karen's pimp - were convicted of her murder.
The trial heard that Charlton had killed Karen when she refused to perform sex acts, while Ali helped bury her body. In 1994, Ali successfully appealed, pleaded guilty to manslaughter at his retrial, and was freed. Charlton has made several appeals against his conviction. All have been dismissed and he remains in jail.

Just saw someone call Watchmen "Alan Moore's Charlton fanfic" and honestly I can't be mad at that given that it does have more fanfic-y tropes (make of that what you will) compared to Moore's other re-inventions of characters like Swamp Thing or Supreme. Imagine if you will a world where Blue Beetle is a shlobby depressed sadsack who needs his costume to get his freak on instead of, well anything Blue Beetle has done in DC Comics since 1985.

Watchmen syndrome?
//It's a term I use to describe a certain brand of media illiteracy. It's when people take away a surface-level understanding of a story as the main thesis, when it's often either a very shallow interpretation or exactly what the story is arguing against.
//I use Alan Moore's Watchmen as an example because it's the biggest victim of this. It's one of the big stories that started the Dark Age of Comics and made Grimdark a major mainstream writing style that's stuck around to this day. A lot of people think it's designed to showcase how realistic superheroes would be gritty, tough, swear, fuck, and kill people. How they'd all actually be awful people with prejudices and perversions. How the most powerful hero in their world is an apathetic god who's bound by fate and thus doesn't give a shit. How our world is on the brink of war and it's meant to peel back shallow idealism in favor of a cynical perspective on cruelty.
//And if you actually read the story, you'll see that the entire thing is an argument against all of this. It's not celebrating grimdark violence, it's using it to explore broader themes of power, whether the ends justify the means, the concept of the greater good, and the importance of human life no matter how small it is.
//People often label Watchmen as a deconstruction, but it was specifically a deconstruction of the Charlton Comics heroes, who were notable for being much more political than those of Marvel or DC: the Question, Blue Beetle, Captain Atom, Peacemaker, Night Shade and Thunderbolt.
//moviebob did a more thorough breakdown of this in his 3-part breakdown of Batman V. Superman, but essentially, Moore was trying to show why the concept of politicized superheroes would be a terrible idea, how real people being supers would be subject to the same flaws and weaknesses as any of us, and how we couldn't rely on them to save the world from the threats we're really facing.
//Yet the moments that stand out to be the most in comic are the understated ones, and the ones that highlight the importance of human life and compassion even in an universe that doesn't care. Rorschach may be a gritty murderous vigilante with a rigid black and white morality, but he never harms children and values his friendship with Nite Owl. This among many other examples.
//It also helps that Watchmen, as a whole, is just very well-written, beautifully-drawn and colored, effectively foreshadowed, well-paced and just overall a very professionally-structured comic. There's so much more to it than just "grimdark superhero deconstruction," hence why I refer to tragic misunderstandings of a story's purpose as Watchmen Syndrome.
//If you want a prime example, I recommend checking out Dr. Manhattan's "Thermodynamic Miracles" speech. It's really one of my favorites in any comic I've ever read.

Victor Varconi and Majel Coleman in The King of Kings (Cecil B. DeMille, 1927)
Cast: H.B. Warner, Dorothy Cumming, Ernest Torrance, Joseph Schildkraut, James Neil, Joseph Striker, Jacqueline Logan, Rudolph Schildkraut, Victor Varconi, Majel Coleman, Montagu Love, William Boyd, Michael D. Moore, Kenneth Thomson, Alan Brooks. Screenplay: Jeanie Macpherson. Cinematography: J. Peverell Marley. Production design: Dan Sayre Groesback, Anton Grot, Julian Harrison, Edward C. Jewell, Mitchell Leisen. Film editing: Anne Bauchens, Harold McLernon. Music: Hugo Riesenfeld.
Director Cecil B. DeMille always had a fondness for unintentionally hilarious dialogue. Think of Anne Baxter's Nefretiri purring to Charlton Heston's Moses in The Ten Commandments (1956), "Oh, Moses, Moses, you stubborn, splendid adorable fool!" I'm almost sorry that The King of Kings is a silent film, so that we can't hear Mary Magdalene (Jacqueline Logan) utter the line: "Harness my zebras -- gift of the Nubian king! This Carpenter shall learn that he cannot hold a man from Mary Magdalene!" After the intertitle card fades, she swans off to rescue her lover, Judas Iscariot (Joseph Schildkraut), from the clutches of Jesus (H.B. Warner). It seems that Judas has become a disciple of Jesus because he believes that he has a chance at a powerful position in the new kingdom that Jesus is planning. This isn't the only hashing-up of the gospels that the credited scenarist, Jeanie Macpherson, commits, but it's the most surprising one. It also gives director DeMille an opportunity to introduce some sexy sinning before he gets pious on us: The Magdalene is vamping around a somewhat stylized orgy and wearing a costume (probably designed by an uncredited Adrian, who was good at that sort of thing) that leaves one breast almost bare. This opening sequence is also in two-strip Technicolor, as is the Resurrection scene some two and a half hours later. Yes, it's an enormously tasteless movie. Warner's Jesus is the usual blue-eyed blond in a white bathrobe found in vulgar iconography, and the actor has little to do but stand around looking wistful and sad at the plight of the world, occasionally giving a little smile that, with Warner's thin, lipsticked mouth, verges dangerously on a smirk. The film goes heavy on the miracles, even recasting one of the gospel writers, Mark, as a boy (Michael D. Moore) cured of lameness by Jesus. (When he throws away his crutch, it accidentally strikes one of the Pharisees standing nearby, only adding to their enmity to Jesus.) Unfortunately, DeMille stages the revival of Lazarus (Kenneth Thomson) in a way that enhances its creepiness, having him emerge from a sarcophagus swathed in bandages like a horror-film mummy. Still, there's entertainment to be had, if you're not too demanding. Schildkraut's Judas is fun to watch at times: Once, he even skulks away like Dracula with his face hidden by his cloak. His father, Rudolph Schildkraut, plays the sneering high priest Caiaphas, Victor Varconi is a suitably conflicted Pontius Pilate, and William Boyd, soon to make his name as Hopalong Cassidy, is Simon of Cyrene, who helps Jesus carry the cross. The storm and earthquake after the Crucifixion is a DeMille-style special-effects extravaganza. The cinematography by J. Peverell Marley leans heavily on filters and screens to cast halos around Jesus, but does what it can to bring DeMille's characteristic tableau groupings to life. Fortunately, the movie also goes out of its way to avoid arousing antisemitism: The crowds calling for crucifixion are shown to be largely made up of bribed bullies who are suppressing those who want Jesus released, and one man furiously rejects the bribe by saying that as a Jew he cannot betray a brother.
