Kroashent Character Spotlight: High King Alain II Hir
For August/September, I'm taking on a little side project, cleaning up and finishing some of the placeholder characters on the Kroashent WorldAnvil. Oftentimes, inspiration strikes suddenly, leaving me with a lot of unfinished concepts that don't quite fit cleanly into the mix. I'll be returning to answering Q+As soon (questions are always open and welcome) and writing the next chapters of the book. In the meantime, working on a lot of commission work, so this is something of a side project when the tablet is charging.

Val's Notes: By an odd coincidence, we got onto a long stretch of detailed Marie-Morgane character entries, all of whom are fairly established, with multiple stories and artworks featuring them. Today, a shift to something more simple in many ways, but more complex in others.
Alain II Hir (The Tall) is a fairly minor character in Kroashent, living almost 700 years before the time of Kathalia and Co. He's based on a quasi-legendary ruler of the same name, a High King of the Bretons and King of Dumnonia. He plays a minor role in Geoffrey of Monmouth's story of the Welsh King Cadwaladr, but has little record of his rule beyond that. Personalities like Alain II Hir provide a great, sometimes frustrating challenge to me as a writer and a researcher, but, given how remote Alain II is to the events of the story, his name is probably known only to Marie deCygne, a bit of historical ephemera to show off during trivia night at the Ash and Hazel.

Dragon age Meta : Breton Lavellan
My version of Clan Lavellan for Aloysius Lavellan, my Inquisitor, is inspired by Brittany and the Bretons.
And here's a lil ramble about how "Rather Death than Dishonor" became the clan's motto!
Brittany's historical motto is "Kentoc'h mervel eget bezañ saotret", which was translated on Wikipedia in "Rather death than dishonor", though there's a strong taint/dirt/filfth dimension to "dishonor".
It comes from a legend where a white haired stroat choose to be killed by Anne de Bretagne's dogs who were hunting it instead of crossing a muddy river that would have stained its fur. Admiring the animal's dedication, Anne spared its life.
Another version, my favorite, says it's Alain Barbetorte, son of the last King of Brittany and Duke of Brittany between 938 and 952) who said that to his men during a war against the Normands as he saw a stroat standing up to a fox rather than crossing that same muddy river.
NOW TO THE LAVELLAN. It's their motto as well.
Their legends say their motto, "Rather death than dishonor", has been said by an Emerald Knight to his men during the second exalted march against the Dales. Cornered by Orlesian soldiers, they're faced with a choice : Crossing a large muddy river to flee, or stand up and fight. As he remembers witnessing a Halla standing up to human hunters, refusing to cross a dirty river to preserve its coat and its whiteness, he shouts these words to his men and they fight the human soldiers until victory.
That's also why THEY particularly hold the Hallas as sacred animal, more than dalish already do.

I wonder why Till picked eels as his tattoo. I mean, it’s a big one! I guess we’ll never know.
Now I understand what they meant when they said “everything he does is extreme”. Most people get a tattoo, then maybe another one, and he goes in and -bam!- covers his entire back.
The eel nest... That's a good question ! It's true that it's a big tattoo, and according to the tattoo artist, Till didn't move an inch during the days he worked on it, I really don't know how he did it but as he has a great resistance to pain, that must help.
Only Till, and maybe the artist who tattooed it, know the true meaning of this tattoo, so I can only offer you interpretations (this is going to be a long answer) (and before anyone asks, yes I had researched the meaning of eels before, I know it's weird).
There are two mentions of eels in Till's works : the first explicit in Knebel's video ; and the second in the lyrics of the song 'Mutter' ("In ihren Lungen wohnt ein Aal" / "An eel lives in her lungs").
Knebel's version is interesting because according to Éloïse Mozzani : "Ingesting the hot heart gives the talent of prophecy and [...] it "will bring back to life everything that will be presented, and will restore it to life as before". (I don't remember any other mentions either in the lyrics or in the poems...)
It is Knebel's video that is chosen by artist Randy Engelhardt in his presentation of Till's tattoo.

The eel is a snake-like fish with a slimy body, reduced fins, able to breathe out of the water and which lives in rivers, ponds and meadows but goes to the middle of the oceans to lay there. It is sometimes confused with the snake, and therefore its symbolism too, just as it resembles the serpent and the dragon of the Middle Ages.
In French, there is an expression which says : "il y a anguille sous roche" (literally "there are eels under the rock") which amounts to expressing one's perplexity vis-à-vis a situation that one considers questionable. A second expression says : "filer comme une anguille" ("flee like an eel") which is said of something that escapes without being able to hold it, on which nothing can be founded.
The eel is intimately linked to water as an element and to the moon as a guide because eels find their way thanks to the moon. And indeed, a study conducted at the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research has just confirmed that the moon influences the migration of these fish.
For Jean Chevalier and Alain Gheerbrant in their 'Dictionary of symbols' : "The eel - for us elusive and a symbol of dissimulation - is linked both to the snake by its morphology and to aquatic symbols by its habitat. It was, in the Ancient Egypt, the emblem of the Harsomtous of Dendera, rising sun, symbol of the primordial manifestation emerging from the waters. A familiar animal in Japan, it is considered there as a divine messenger : iconography associates it with the turtle. [...] At a lower level, the eel unites the symbolisms of the snake and water. It has kept a sexual connotation in modern slang which sometimes uses the image "eel in the underwear" to designate the penis."
In my native region, Brittany (West of France), the eel is sacred, as Éloïse Mozzani confirms in her book 'The Book of Superstitions, Myths, Beliefs and Legends' : "According to a belief in the Middle Ages, eating eel was harmful to the voice and made young girls sassy with men. However, these few pernicious effects were nothing compared to the magical and medicinal properties attributed to a fish whose divine character the ancient Egyptians recognized - only priests were authorized to consume it - just like the Bretons of the last century and the Japanese who still consider it a divine messenger."
For Didier Colin author of the 'Dictionary of symbols, myths and legends' : "[...] the eel is a symbol of secrecy, mystery, concealment, but also of something which escapes us, which slips between the fingers, which one cannot retain, grasp, understand. However, because it lives in clear waters, it has a much less bad reputation than the snake. [...] The appearance of an eel in a dream can therefore announce to you that "there is an eel under the rock", that is to say that you are being told something that you will not take long to learn, or that you are hiding a a fact of which you will soon have the revelation ; Similarly, in the tradition of omens, seeing a living eel swimming at the surface of the water is the announcement of a secret that will be revealed to us or of a confidence that will be made to us. to find an eel under a rock is to learn a surprising fact that we did not know, but which nevertheless existed without our knowledge. To see a dead eel is to discover a fact relating to a past circumstance or an event which is no longer relevant, but which was concealed from us in its time, or of which we were fooled."
For Melissa Alvarez, author of 'Meet Your Energy Animal', the eel is defined by the following characteristics : "The eel symbolizes transformation, mystery, disguise and hiding. The eel is excellent at using camouflage to protect itself from predators. It is fast and swims by moving her body in a sinusoidal fashion. The eel's electric shock can produce a six hundred volt shock that paralyzes its prey. The eel tends to have poor vision, and it relies on its radar-like sense of perception to search for food. During the day, she buries herself in the mud and rests there until she is ready to go back to hunting. It talents are : Attractiveness ; Ability to relate ; Flexible ; Privacy ; Night ; Sens of observation ; Sensuality ; Vitality. And it challenges : Evasive ; Reserve ; Too cautious ; Lonely ; Fleeing."
John Matthews makes it a powerful totem in his book 'Celtic Animal Totems, A Shamanic Journey to Meet Your Allied Animal' : "A great source of wisdom and inspiration like the salmon (on which it feeds), the he eel also has a reputation for protection. Irish mythology suggests that certain eels could transform into destructive weapons when wielded by a warrior. This is how the name of the famous spear Gae-Bolg belonging to Cuchulainn, comes from the Eel Morrigan herself assumes the form of an eel in magical combat with Cuchulainn. Given its ability to insinuate itself into the least accessible places, the eel is an ally of choice when seeking the answer to a difficult question, requiring subtlety and flexibility in its approach. Totem precepts :
Pathfinder : Anything can go like water flows.
Protector : Beware of treacherous currents.
Challenger : Actions always have consequences.
Hint : The deep waters contain treasures."
There must surely be other meanings to this animal, and an intimate meaning specific to Till of which only he can speak. But I think it might give you some directions...

News are given of what is happening on the Canadian West Coast, with Ron Sakolsky’s Surrealism and the Anarchist Imagination, as well as twenty years of The Oystercatcher – systematically published every May 1st – with surrealism as its field of investigation. « Surrealism is never what it seems ».
Homage is paid to Claude Tarnaud’s Maga, illustrated by Henriette de Champrel,  » offering suspended forms between jelly fish and madrepores » – one of these images is on the first page, to Alain Roussel and his Impossible Text : « To read this fine flower is an immense pleasure, this is what Jehan Mayoux, who knew flowers so well, would have appreciated ». The issue will close on Max Ernst’s Imaginary Worlds – Liberated Worlds.
Various articles will include our « regrets »: on the surrealists’ colonial « unframing » and on forgotten departures in 2018 and 2019.. There will be four pages of references to documents and exhibitions.

Si la plupart de ceux qui se prétendent "lacanien" avaient la moindre idée de ce que propose Lacan en termes d’éthique, déployant point après point la logique de ce que Freud a apporté avec le Malaise dans la civilisation, comment oseraient-ils se faire les complices de la mascarade débile et de la dictature à prétention "sanitaire" instaurée par "ceux qui veulent votre bien"?
Comment ne pas avoir une pensée émue pour le plus "famous" d’entre tous, le grand comique Jacques-Alain Miller ("L’autorité lacanienne, c’est moi.") qui en 2017 se targuait d’avoir "sauvé la France du fascisme"... Et au nom de quoi? ...au nom du "bien" qui infecte les sociétés occidentées, et qui n’en finit plus de métastaser.
L’éthique psychanalytique se fonde sur l’idée que ce n’est pas le mal, mais le Bien qui engendre la culpabilité ... la culpabilité présentant le fallacieux avantage pour le sujet d’entretenir chez lui la croyance infantile, délirante, ruineuse que tout dépend de lui...

Yet it is during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries that all the inhabitants of the duchy became known under the name of Bretons, despite their linguistic diferences. Hence, at the beginning of the thirteenth century, the German poet Wolfram von Eschenbach ascribed in his Parzival the war cry "Nantes!" to the Bretons. The terms Brittany and Bretons were now applied to all the territories and inhabitants under the authority of the dukes of Brittany, and now the Romance-speaking area – future Brittany gallo or Upper Brittany –was clearly the dominant part of the duchy both politically and linguistically. It is striking to note that the same phenomenon happened in Scotland. Originally, only the Gaelic speakers considered themselves and were considered as "Scots" until c. 1260 when the other linguistic communities politically united with this kingdom (English speakers, North "Welsh" speakers, etc.) also began to be named and to name themselves as "Scots". The "French" part of Brittany was now the leading part of the duchy, and, revealingly, the medieval custom composed for the whole duchy c. 1300 (La très ancienne coutume de Bretagne) was written in French and never translated into Breton. Consequently, the Breton speakers who needed to go outside Brittany bretonnante or had an activity that implied contacts with Bretons gallos and/or foreigners absolutely needed to learn French. They were usually sent to a family of Brittany gallo in order to do so. Jean Froissart even met a "Breton bretonnant originating from Vannes [who] knew well at least three or four languages: Breton, French, English and Spanish". However, not everybody was as gifted as this man and most of them were not totally at ease with French, as Alain Bouchart, himself originating from a bretonnant region, explained in 1514 to the readers of his Grande Chroniques de Bretaigne: "I beg them to be lenient if they find any language badly embellished by lack of elegance or pleasant style, because he is a native of Brittany. Breton and French are two languages which are very challenging to pronounce easily by one mouth." More than a century later (1637), Albert le Grand would write almost exactly the same remark for the readers of his Vie des saints de la Bretagne.

The Marian miracle at the origin of the Basilica of Our Lady of Folgoët in Brittany
The diocesan shrine and basilica of Our Lady of Folgoët (Finistère department, region of Brittany, France) began with a touching story. 
Around the middle of the 14th century, a man named Salaün (derived from “Salomon”) lived in a clearing. The locals called him "The Madman of the Woods", in Breton “Fol ar Coat”, hence the name “Folgoët”. Regarded as an “innocent soul” (developmentally challenged), Salaün begged for his bread from farm to farm, tirelessly repeating: “Ave Maria! Salaün would like to eat a piece of bread!"
Salaün’s death around 1358 at the age of 48 went quite unnoticed. He was buried in the village of Lannuchen, near the manor house of Kergoff. Today, a stone cross still marks his tomb, framed by four ovoid stones. 
Shortly after his death, however, a lily with the words “Ave Maria” written in gold letters was discovered on his grave, near the oak tree where he used to swing and the fountain where he used to dip his bread. 
When the tomb was opened, the lily was found to have taken root in the mouth of the deceased. The miracle quickly drew crowds, and it was decided to build a chapel over the tomb of the “innocent”.
In 1419, Bishop Alain de Kerazred (de La Rue) of the Saint-Pol-de- Léon diocese in Brittany, France, blessed the shrine, which was erected as a collegiate church by John V in 1423.
