How I got scammed

I wuz robbed.

More specifically, I was tricked by a phone-phisher pretending to be from my bank, and he convinced me to hand over my credit-card number, then did $8,000+ worth of fraud with it before I figured out what happened. And then he tried to do it again, a week later!

Here's what happened. Over the Christmas holiday, I traveled to New Orleans. The day we landed, I hit a Chase ATM in the French Quarter for some cash, but the machine declined the transaction. Later in the day, we passed a little credit-union's ATM and I used that one instead (I bank with a one-branch credit union and generally there's no fee to use another CU's ATM).

A couple days later, I got a call from my credit union. It was a weekend, during the holiday, and the guy who called was obviously working for my little CU's after-hours fraud contractor. I'd dealt with these folks before – they service a ton of little credit unions, and generally the call quality isn't great and the staff will often make mistakes like mispronouncing my credit union's name.

That's what happened here – the guy was on a terrible VOIP line and I had to ask him to readjust his mic before I could even understand him. He mispronounced my bank's name and then asked if I'd attempted to spend $1,000 at an Apple Store in NYC that day. No, I said, and groaned inwardly. What a pain in the ass. Obviously, I'd had my ATM card skimmed – either at the Chase ATM (maybe that was why the transaction failed), or at the other credit union's ATM (it had been a very cheap looking system).

I told the guy to block my card and we started going through the tedious business of running through recent transactions, verifying my identity, and so on. It dragged on and on. These were my last hours in New Orleans, and I'd left my family at home and gone out to see some of the pre-Mardi Gras krewe celebrations and get a muffalata, and I could tell that I was going to run out of time before I finished talking to this guy.

"Look," I said, "you've got all my details, you've frozen the card. I gotta go home and meet my family and head to the airport. I'll call you back on the after-hours number once I'm through security, all right?"

He was frustrated, but that was his problem. I hung up, got my sandwich, went to the airport, and we checked in. It was total chaos: an Alaska Air 737 Max had just lost its door-plug in mid-air and every Max in every airline's fleet had been grounded, so the check in was crammed with people trying to rebook. We got through to the gate and I sat down to call the CU's after-hours line. The person on the other end told me that she could only handle lost and stolen cards, not fraud, and given that I'd already frozen the card, I should just drop by the branch on Monday to get a new card.

We flew home, and later the next day, I logged into my account and made a list of all the fraudulent transactions and printed them out, and on Monday morning, I drove to the bank to deal with all the paperwork. The folks at the CU were even more pissed than I was. The fraud that run up to more than $8,000, and if Visa refused to take it out of the merchants where the card had been used, my little credit union would have to eat the loss.

I agreed and commiserated. I also pointed out that their outsource, after-hours fraud center bore some blame here: I'd canceled the card on Saturday but most of the fraud had taken place on Sunday. Something had gone wrong.

One cool thing about banking at a tiny credit-union is that you end up talking to people who have actual authority, responsibility and agency. It turned out the the woman who was processing my fraud paperwork was a VP, and she decided to look into it. A few minutes later she came back and told me that the fraud center had no record of having called me on Saturday.

"That was the fraudster," she said.

Oh, shit. I frantically rewound my conversation, trying to figure out if this could possibly be true. I hadn't given him anything apart from some very anodyne info, like what city I live in (which is in my Wikipedia entry), my date of birth (ditto), and the last four digits of my card.

Wait a sec.

He hadn't asked for the last four digits. He'd asked for the last seven digits. At the time, I'd found that very frustrating, but now – "The first nine digits are the same for every card you issue, right?" I asked the VP.

I'd given him my entire card number.

Goddammit.

The thing is, I know a lot about fraud. I'm writing an entire series of novels about this kind of scam:

And most summers, I go to Defcon, and I always go to the "social engineering" competitions where an audience listens as a hacker in a soundproof booth cold-calls merchants (with the owner's permission) and tries to con whoever answers the phone into giving up important information.

But I'd been conned.

Now look, I knew I could be conned. I'd been conned before, 13 years ago, by a Twitter worm that successfully phished out of my password via DM:

That scam had required a miracle of timing. It started the day before, when I'd reset my phone to factory defaults and reinstalled all my apps. That same day, I'd published two big online features that a lot of people were talking about. The next morning, we were late getting out of the house, so by the time my wife and I dropped the kid at daycare and went to the coffee shop, it had a long line. Rather than wait in line with me, my wife sat down to read a newspaper, and so I pulled out my phone and found a Twitter DM from a friend asking "is this you?" with a URL.

Assuming this was something to do with those articles I'd published the day before, I clicked the link and got prompted for my Twitter login again. This had been happening all day because I'd done that mobile reinstall the day before and all my stored passwords had been wiped. I entered it but the page timed out. By that time, the coffees were ready. We sat and chatted for a bit, then went our own ways.

I was on my way to the office when I checked my phone again. I had a whole string of DMs from other friends. Each one read "is this you?" and had a URL.

Oh, shit, I'd been phished.

If I hadn't reinstalled my mobile OS the day before. If I hadn't published a pair of big articles the day before. If we hadn't been late getting out the door. If we had been a little more late getting out the door (so that I'd have seen the multiple DMs, which would have tipped me off).

There's a name for this in security circles: "Swiss-cheese security." Imagine multiple slices of Swiss cheese all stacked up, the holes in one slice blocked by the slice below it. All the slices move around and every now and again, a hole opens up that goes all the way through the stack. Zap!

The fraudster who tricked me out of my credit card number had Swiss cheese security on his side. Yes, he spoofed my bank's caller ID, but that wouldn't have been enough to fool me if I hadn't been on vacation, having just used a pair of dodgy ATMs, in a hurry and distracted. If the 737 Max disaster hadn't happened that day and I'd had more time at the gate, I'd have called my bank back. If my bank didn't use a slightly crappy outsource/out-of-hours fraud center that I'd already had sub-par experiences with. If, if, if.

The next Friday night, at 5:30PM, the fraudster called me back, pretending to be the bank's after-hours center. He told me my card had been compromised again. But: I hadn't removed my card from my wallet since I'd had it replaced. Also, it was half an hour after the bank closed for the long weekend, a very fraud-friendly time. And when I told him I'd call him back and asked for the after-hours fraud number, he got very threatening and warned me that because I'd now been notified about the fraud that any losses the bank suffered after I hung up the phone without completing the fraud protocol would be billed to me. I hung up on him. He called me back immediately. I hung up on him again and put my phone into do-not-disturb.

The following Tuesday, I called my bank and spoke to their head of risk-management. I went through everything I'd figured out about the fraudsters, and she told me that credit unions across America were being hit by this scam, by fraudsters who somehow knew CU customers' phone numbers and names, and which CU they banked at. This was key: my phone number is a reasonably well-kept secret. You can get it by spending money with Equifax or another nonconsensual doxing giant, but you can't just google it or get it at any of the free services. The fact that the fraudsters knew where I banked, knew my name, and had my phone number had really caused me to let down my guard.

The risk management person and I talked about how the credit union could mitigate this attack: for example, by better-training the after-hours card-loss staff to be on the alert for calls from people who had been contacted about supposed card fraud. We also went through the confusing phone-menu that had funneled me to the wrong department when I called in, and worked through alternate wording for the menu system that would be clearer (this is the best part about banking with a small CU – you can talk directly to the responsible person and have a productive discussion!). I even convinced her to buy a ticket to next summer's Defcon to attend the social engineering competitions.

There's a leak somewhere in the CU systems' supply chain. Maybe it's Zelle, or the small number of corresponding banks that CUs rely on for SWIFT transaction forwarding. Maybe it's even those after-hours fraud/card-loss centers. But all across the USA, CU customers are getting calls with spoofed caller IDs from fraudsters who know their registered phone numbers and where they bank.

I've been mulling this over for most of a month now, and one thing has really been eating at me: the way that AI is going to make this kind of problem much worse.

Not because AI is going to commit fraud, though.

One of the truest things I know about AI is: "we're nowhere near a place where bots can steal your job, we're certainly at the point where your boss can be suckered into firing you and replacing you with a bot that fails at doing your job":

I trusted this fraudster specifically because I knew that the outsource, out-of-hours contractors my bank uses have crummy headsets, don't know how to pronounce my bank's name, and have long-ass, tedious, and pointless standardized questionnaires they run through when taking fraud reports. All of this created cover for the fraudster, whose plausibility was enhanced by the rough edges in his pitch - they didn't raise red flags.

As this kind of fraud reporting and fraud contacting is increasingly outsourced to AI, bank customers will be conditioned to dealing with semi-automated systems that make stupid mistakes, force you to repeat yourself, ask you questions they should already know the answers to, and so on. In other words, AI will groom bank customers to be phishing victims.

This is a mistake the finance sector keeps making. 15 years ago, Ben Laurie excoriated the UK banks for their "Verified By Visa" system, which validated credit card transactions by taking users to a third party site and requiring them to re-enter parts of their password there:

This is exactly how a phishing attack works. As Laurie pointed out, this was the banks training their customers to be phished.

I came close to getting phished again today, as it happens. I got back from Berlin on Friday and my suitcase was damaged in transit. I've been dealing with the airline, which means I've really been dealing with their third-party, outsource luggage-damage service. They have a terrible website, their emails are incoherent, and they officiously demand the same information over and over again.

This morning, I got a scam email asking me for more information to complete my damaged luggage claim. It was a terrible email, from a noreply@ email address, and it was vague, officious, and dishearteningly bureaucratic. For just a moment, my finger hovered over the phishing link, and then I looked a little closer.

On any other day, it wouldn't have had a chance. Today – right after I had my luggage wrecked, while I'm still jetlagged, and after days of dealing with my airline's terrible outsource partner – it almost worked.

So much fraud is a Swiss-cheese attack, and while companies can't close all the holes, they can stop creating new ones.

Meanwhile, I'll continue to post about it whenever I get scammed. I find the inner workings of scams to be fascinating, and it's also important to remind people that everyone is vulnerable sometimes, and scammers are willing to try endless variations until an attack lands at just the right place, at just the right time, in just the right way. I would like to know about your take on Jimin and Jungkook's car conversation in AYS. Do you think there was a break up?

First let me answer the second part of your ask. And then I'll talk about their car conversation.

Do I think Jikook had a break up?

NO. NOT AT ALL.

I think you got this idea about a break up cause we didn't get to see Jikook interactions during the Solo Era prior to AYS. Now, them not interacting publicly does not mean they don't interact at all. I'm sure they did meet up and spent time with each other BUT behind closed doors, in the security of their apartments. However that time was NOT ENOUGH for them who used to spent 24×7 together. Together during work hours and later relaxing at home but again together, prior to Solo Era. So, whatever time they had to spent apart was not by their choice but it was forced upon them. They had demanding schedules which kept them apart. And whatever time they spent together we didn't get to know about that cause they didn't feel the need to report it to us. They're not obliged to do that. However I think they were together in Jungkook's apartment from that time when Jimin showed up at the airport with a scratch on his arm which looks like a scratch from a big dog (Jungkook posted a pic of Bam around this time too)

Also, we wouldn't have known about Jikook having a sleepover at Jungkook's house the night before AYS Jeju if Jimin didn't share it with us.

And what about all those times Jungkook started a live every time Jimin boarded a flight from Korea? Did they spent time together before Jimin had to get on those flights? I can take a guess.

Jungkook being excited and lighting up like a Christmas tree whenever Jimin comments in his live. Trying to lure Jimin into doing a live with him using boxing, beer and fried chicken. What about that half naked live and their flirting back and forth making us all third wheels.

That's not how a person who went through a break up behaves.

Now let's talk about Jimin. Jimin writing a Love Ode, "Letter" for Jungkook with Jungkook doing the background vocals. A song which conveys how he's grateful for that one person who held him through his dark times, the person who believed in him when even he didnt believe in his strengths and how he hopes and wishes his forever to be with that person.

And then we have Jimin flying to New York to support Jungkook during his Solo debut. Not only that but he made plans to spent quality time with Jungkook cause he knew Jungkook needed it, he needed it, their relationship needed it. All under the veil of a travel show.

They're giving away major hints towards what their relationship is. Many times with their actions and then also with their words.

Now maybe you'll ask me if AYS came about cause they were trying to get back together from their " break up ". My answer is NO. The show was a guise to spend time with each other. To make memories, to be carefree and simply be with each other. Cause the time they got to spend with each other before AYS was simply not enough for them.

This was why Jungkook said " You're here". Finally". He wanted Jimin to choose him, make time for him and their relationship. Cause he's only human and sometimes needs reassurances especially when more trying times (military service) was coming up.

Also, it was their first time in front of the cameras (there were so many) without the ot7 protection to provide them a cover. So, they were probably thinking what to show, what to say, how much they should say and how much they should show.

So, yeah I don't think there was a break up. Not during the Solo Era and not during the years before that.

Does that mean they never had arguments? Of course not. They surely had. But from what I have seen and heard they resolve it pretty quickly. Their verbal communication is solid. Jimin is good in expressing his feelings and we have seen how Jungkook gets chatty when it comes to Jimin. He speaks freely and openly with Jimin. Their non verbal communication is amazing (eye contact, body language and tone of voice). They're affectionate with each other. Openly show appreciation and give compliments. Should i even talk about how much they love each other??!! There's so much of it. Pure, unconditional love. The roots of their relationship are deeply secure.

All I see is two men who are in a long term relationship giving their all to make the best out of the available circumstances. I see how in love they're and how much they cherish their relationship.

The Department of Education released the first draft for a wide ranging student loan forgiveness plan. After Biden's first attempt at student debt forgiveness was struck down at the Supreme Court in 2023, this new plan is an attempt to replace it with something that will hold up in court. The plan hopes to forgive debt for anyone facing "financial hardship" which has been as broadly defined as possible. Another part of the plan hopes to eliminate $10-20,000 in interest from all student loans, as well as a wide ranging public Information push to inform people of other forgiveness programs they qualify for but don't know about.

The House passed 1.2 Billion Dollars to combat human trafficking, including $175 million in housing assistance to human trafficking victims

The Department of Transportation announced $970 Million for improvements at 114 airports across 44 states and 3 territories. They include $40 million to O'Hare International in Chicago to improve passenger experience by reconfiguring TSA and baggage claims, and installing ADA compliant bathrooms(!). The loans will also go to connecting airports to mass transit, boosted sustainability, installing solar and wind power, and expanding service to under served committees around the country.

Medicare & Medicaid released new guidelines to allow people to pay out of pocket prescription drug coats in monthly installments rather than as a lump sum. This together with capping the price of certain drugs and penalties for drug companies that rise prices over inflation is expected to save the public millions on drug coasts and assure people don't pass on a prescription because they can't pay upfront

The EPA announced its adding 150 more communities to its Closing America's Wastewater Access Gap Community Initiative. 2.2 Million Americans do not have basic running water and indoor plumbing. Broken and unreliable wastewater infrastructure exposed many of those to dangerous raw sewage. These Americans live primarily in poor and rural communities, many predominantly Black communities in the south as well as those on tribal lands. The program is aiming to close the wastewater gap and insure all Americans have access to reliable clear water.

The White House announced deferred action for Palestinians in the US. This means any Palestinian living in the United States, no mater their legal status, can not be deported for any reason for the next 18 months.

The Department of Energy announced $60 million in investment into clean geothermal energy. The plan will hopefully lead to a 90% decrease in the coasts of geothermal. DOE estimates hold that geothermal might be able to power the hopes of 65 million Americans by 2050 making it a key step in the Biden administration plan for a carbon-free grid by 2035 and net-zero emissions by 2050.

The EPA launched $83 million to help improve air quality monitoring across America. With updated equipment local agencies will be better able to report on air quality, give more localized reports of bad air quality and the country will be better equipped to start mitigating the problem

The Department of Energy announced $63 million in investments in domestic heat-pump manufacturing. Studies have shown that heat-pumps reduce green house gases by 50% over the most efficient condensing gas boilers, as technology improves this could rise to 75% by 2030. Heat pump water heaters meanwhile are 2 to 3 times as energy efficient as conventional electric water heaters.

HHS awarded $5.1 million to organizations working with LGBTQI+ Youth and their Families. The programs focus on preventing homelessness, fighting depression and suicide, drug use and HIV prevention and treatment, as well as family counseling and support interventions tailored for LGBTQI+ families.

The House passed two bills in support of the oppressed Uyghur minority in China. The "No Dollars To Uyghur Forced Labor" Act would prohibit the US government from spending any money on projects that source materials from Xinjiang. The Uyghur Policy Act would create a permanent post at the State Department to coordinate policy on Uyghur Issues, much like the special ambassador on antisemitism.

Summary- In which his love language is gift giving. Then the gifts get crazier and crazier.

Warnings: none. Just pure fluff baby!

There were many different love languages out there and every single person out there had unique ways of showing their love to someone.

Some people lived for positive affirmation , of sweet promises and endless compliments to let the other person know how much they adored them.

For some it was quality time. Getting to come home from a stressful day at work and just getting to relax with the one you love. To be happy with doing just about anything with them, as long as they were together. They would always make time for each other. Because that was how they loved. It was special, to them.

For plenty of people, it was physical touch. Whether it was as simple as hand holding, cuddling beneath the sheets and giving warm kisses in the sun. Or a simple hand to their back in support , a bop of the nose or a long night of passion , bodies pressed together as close as could possibly be.

And for others , it was gift giving. And acts of service.

And Cherrie had a feeling that she knew just what lando's love language was. Because as his best friend, she had been subjected to plenty of gifts from him over the years. From cute novelty teddy's, to strange gifts and questionable choices.

He always had something to give her each time that he came around. His hands were never empty and his eyes were always so excited to see her reaction to whatever he had bought her next . Already grinning to himself before he had even passed her the gift he had chosen this time around.

She thought it was cute. There was nothing wrong with it at all. Everybody had a love language and love languages weren't only subjected to lovers, it was for friends too.

No matter how many times their mutual friends would raise eyebrows at them, muttering in amusement about how ridiculous this was getting , telling them to just admit their love for each because it would save Lando a lot of money if he did so as well.

They both ignored their constant inputs and judgmental side eyes, too busy being locked in their own little worlds together. Giggling like little kids with their heads knocking together as he presented her with yet another gift.

It was completely normal .

There was nothing wrong with lando's constant stream of gifts. She enjoyed receiving them and getting a good laugh , or a good cry , out of them , depending on what he had gotten her this time around.

It was no different to the way that Cherrie always reached for his hand in a crowded room. The way that she always nudged him with her shoulder when they were walking side by side. The way that she would lay her head in his lap just to watch him play games with his friends online . Content to just be with him, his fingers in her hair as she drifted off to sleep, some piece of their body always touching.

It made her happy because her love language was physical affection . She loved touch. Especially when it came down to her best friend .

It was just the way they worked . And if landos gifts had been getting stranger and stranger , more out of the box and ...bigger , each time. Well, that was completely normal too. It didn't mean anything, he was just being a good friend. Wanting to make her laugh with his silliness. That was all.

She reassured herself of this again as she found herself facing a smug looking Lando at the airport , where they were meeting with their friends for a small holiday Together. A loud laugh escaping her lips as she looked at what he was wearing.

Lando was wearing a bright yellow shirt with a photo of her face on it, with her grinning at a club , dressed in rave clothes and sticking up both middle fingers at him, glitter Covering her sweaty face . He had the words 'my No 1 Bitch' printed on top of it . Then her eyes trailed down to his joggers, laughing even louder when she spotted all the different photos of herself , most of them from Snapchat's of her pulling faces at him, completely covering both legs.

"Oh my god." She snorted out in pure amusement as she glanced at his socks with her name on, and then at his cap with her name on it too.

Fully decked out in her face as he posed for her , smugly grinning to himself as he pulled down the collar of his shirt to show her the temporary tattoo of her face that he had put on his chest.

Proudly grinning to himself as he watched her collapse into a fit of giggles right there in the busy airport . Tears streaming from her eyes as she gasped for her breath , only able to point at him in amusement before falling into yet another round of breathtaking giggles.

Knees buckling as she clutched onto his arm to stop her from face planting to the ground, catching a glimpse of her own face staring back at her on his shirt , she cackled even harder .

"Oh my god Lando! Where the hell did you even get this?!" She exclaimed in amazement as she turned over his arm so that she could the multiple mini temporary tattoos that littered his arms as well. All miniature versions of her face .

She didn't even want to know just how long he had spent putting them on himself in the mirror , seeming quite content to actually leave his apartment while looking like a walking, talking merchandise bar for her.

He looked insane. There was no easy way to put it, he was absolutely crazy. That had to be it.

I mean .. where the hell did he even get ideas like this from? Was he just laying there in his bed that morning and suddenly thought 'oh I know! Every piece of clothing I will wear will have cherries face on them! I shall also tattoo myself with photos of her all over himself' , he was just like a mischievous child who always gave into his intrusive thoughts.

"I had them made myself. I am officially a fashion designer now." Lando smugly told her, clearly very proud of what he had done.

He then tilted his body to the side so that she could see the back of his tshirt as well, her eyes widening in disbelief as she saw the ugly photo of herself sleeping with her mouth wide open on a beach , a lobster red from sunburn as Lando posed next to her with peace signs, laughing in the photo .

"Oh my god." Was all she could keep repeating, flushing red as she heard familiar giggles of their friends joining them. None of them seeming very surprised at the sight of Lando with her face covering him from head to toe.

Charles took one look at him and laughed loudly in amusement , Pierre just patting cherries shoulder sympathetically as she buried her face into her hands in embarrassment.

Knowing for a fact that the following morning there would be plenty of pictures of them all over the internet . She could hearing everybody giggling and muttering between each other in clear amusement as they watched them all head down to their terminal at the airport.

"How long did this take you to do mate?" Charles asked Lando curiously as he pulled out his phone, a grin on his face as he started taking pictures of him to send to everyone else on their group chat .

Future blackmail material. Perfecto .

A groupchat that they had rightfully named 'Lando being a simp'. Where each of there friends updated them all on what crazy shit he was doing now to get her attention .

Last week Daniel had sent them a photo of Lando wearing a necklace with her name on it. Then later on a candid photo of the mclaren driver sat crossed legged on the floor making Cherrie and himself friendship bracelets to wear , out of a jewellery kit made for children.

Which seemed about right .

Neither of the best friends had any idea that said group chat, full of proof and evidence , were being collected between all of their friends for months now.

They had a bet going on , each of them betting on who would make the first move out of the two of them. Most of them saying that Lando would be the one too eventually cave in , but Charles wasn't so sure , seeing as he had years to do so and all he seemed to be able to do was wear her face on his body and all over his clothes . Like a child.

Charles just wanted him to confess his love for her instead. He wanted them both to be happy and it was very clear to everyone else around them that they were meant to be. They made each other happy in a way that nobody else could ever come close.

I mean, how far was lando going to take it before he finally told her the truth?

"It took me about six hours. Cause I had to get someone to help me print her face on everything..but the fake tattoos only took like...a minute ... each ." Lando told them proudly without any shame . Showing them off to all of them, turning around so they could see each and every detail of his fit.

He even had her face miniaturised on his shoes.

That was dedication.

Grinning cheekily over at a flustered Cherrie as he saddled up beside her, throwing his arm around her shoulder to pull her closer to his side . Happy that she was in his space again.

He missed her whenever she wasn't by his side. The world seemed a little cloudier when she wasn't with him.

But now she was there with him again and the sun in his life had never shone so bright.

"You look so good." He simply told her as he eyed her biker shorts and cropped Harley shirt , hair in a messy bun with large sunglasses covering her eyes. Her typical airport outfit . She looked just as beautiful as she did in tiny dresses and ballroom gowns.

His best friend was hot as shit and he felt smug and more than proud to be able to walk beside her like this, with her arm snaking around his waist to hold him close as well as she laughed at him fondly.

Pinching his hip gently "and you look insane." She casually replied, rolling her eyes with a grin as she saw Pierre and Charles giggling behind them, phones trained on them. No doubt taking photos and videos of them.

She looked at lando's arm around her shoulders , shaking her head in amusement at the sight of a load of herself, miniature style tattoos all over him.

Only he would do something like this when they had a seven hour flight ahead of them.

She crossed her fingers and hoped that he hadn't printed her face onto his swimming trunks as well. She really wouldn't put it past him.

"Insanely good I think you mean." He immediately shot back, grinning cheekily at her.

Before Leaning down to kiss her burning cheek , sighing contently as he pulled her as close as could be. Gently knocking their heads together in affection.

And there was absolutely nothing strange about them at all. Nothing.

She was adamant about it, ignoring the disbelieving looks their friends were giving them the whole plane ride there.

Friends. Best friends. That was all they were.

It was when they were laid out on the beach together, side by side on a large towel , sunbathing in her tiny bikini and his bright yellow swim trunks , that the next gift was given to her out of the blue.

Her sunglasses were firmly planted over her eyes as she laid spread out like a starfish, already half asleep from the heat , and from the fact that the group had spent most of the week partying everything . Club after club , vodka to tequila , mixed in with some ridiculous amount of sun... she was exhausted, and permanently hungover , her liver was begging for a reset .

Hence the beach day, where she had Firmly put a ban on anymore alcohol, convinced that if she had to see or smell another vodka shot .. she would simply die. Or vomit but mostly die. It was awful.

Lando rolling back over onto his stomach got her attention as he reached out and started tapping her on her arm annoyingly , grinning like a little kid when she tried to swat his hand away from her with a tired groan. Instantly irritated.

Because Lando was the only man brave enough to annoy her when she was hungover and trying to catch a nap. The rest of their friends knew well enough to leave her the hell alone.

But not him. He just laughed and poked her side some more.

"What?!" She snapped at him, having enough .

Sitting up on her elbows , lowering her sunglasses so she could glare at him . Seeing his stupidly happily smile when her head was still killing her from last week, she wanted to kill him.

"What is it now?!"

Lando simply looked at her with a smile, then reached his hand out to prod her between her frown , giggling loudly when she immediately slapped his hand away from her again.

"I got you something." He told her excitedly , reaching for their beach bag to pull out a brown paper bag he had gotten.

Immediately cherries annoyance slid away. Sitting up and crossing her legs, she looked down at the bag curiously. Wondering when he had the time to go out and find something to give her.

He had spent most of their holiday attached to her hip, even in the clubs. He was like a third limb to her at this point. Wherever Cherrie was, Lando was never far behind.

Seeing the confused look on her pretty face, he understood what she was thinking without her even saying anything . Years of friendship kicking in.

"I went out while you were still asleep this morning. Did you know that you snore like a man?" He said to her in amusement , easily dodging her next slap. Grinning at her cheekily .

Cherrie scoffed humourfully "well you wouldn't know what that's like would you lan? Seeing as you're not quite a man yet." She shot back at him with a shit eating grin. Looking between her best friend and the bag in his hand impatiently .

He just laughed , stroking his chin dramatically with a grin "tell that to all six hairs on my new beard baby." He responded back just as quick.

Shaking his head before he could get anymore distracted, knowing for a fact that the two of them could go back forth insulting each other for hours without even trying. It was their thing.

"-And anyways. That's not the point. Look what I've got you! You're gonna love this." He gushed excitedly , tipping the bag upside so that the contents fell down onto the towel between them.

Cherrie could only look down at the little figures in front of her in shock, mouth dropping open as she let out a disbelieving laugh.

"Lando! Are these voodoo dolls?!" She exclaimed with a amused grin as she picked up one , taking in its black hair and blue eyes, giggles already bursting out of her lips as she realised just what he had gotten her.

Lando nodded proudly , holding up another little voodoo doll. This one wearing a football kit , blonde.

"They're all voodoo dolls of your ex boyfriends." He grinned, more than pleased with himself . Picking up another one with red hair this time, laughing to himself at how much it resembled her last ex boyfriend .

"I thought it would be fun to stab them whenever you feel sad . Remembering what those assholes did... look .." he said as he held up the football player doll with several holes already in it.

"I already started on this one. I saw a picture of him on insta and then I remembered what a prick he was to you so I stabbed his doll with a fork." He told her seriously , face calm and serene as he pulled on the dolls hair harshly .

"Somewhere in the world right now that twat has a really sharp pain in his chin." He let her know slyly .

Cherrie was speechless .

She couldn't even get a word out, too busy laughing hysterically as she held up all of the voodoo dolls resembling her ex boyfriends in her hands. Absolutely amazed.

"Oh my god!" She cackled flicking one of the tiny legs, tears running from her eyes as she dropped down onto her back in giggles. "Lando!" She shouted loudly in amusement while laughing .

He dropped down beside her, resting his chin on her shoulder with a proud grin on his sunburnt face. Cheesing down at her happily , laughing along with her. His cheeks flushing when she wrapped her arm around his neck to pull him onto a side hug, kissing the side of his face fondly.

"What?" He acted innocent but his mischievous grin told her everything. "There was no way I could ever punch them in real life, seeing as you seem to have a kink for guys the size of a lamppost, but doll them?" He shrugged with a smug smirk "I can punch their stupid faces all day long and still live to tell the tale." He stated smugly , genuinely thinking that this might have been one of the best gifts he had gotten her so far.

Cherrie just laughed even harder, biting down on her bottom lip as she tried to stop giggling hysterically , the pleased look on landos face just making her cackle more. Feeling a strange feeling in her chest as she saw just how much he hated her ex boyfriends, just as much as she did, if not more.

"You're crazy." She murmured to him affectionately as she picked up the footballer voodoo doll and held it up between them.

Lando immediately flicked it , hard, between its legs , making her snort and making him do it again just to see her laugh. His eyes never leaving her smile as she threw her head back against the towel, closing her eyes from the force of her amusement .

He leant down and gently bit the end of her scrunched nose , giggling along with her.

"I don't think you should get anymore boyfriends though." He whispered to her casually . Testing his luck.

She peeked one eye open at him, squinting from the sun. Lando moved his head in front of her so that he shadowed her, making her give him a smile in thanks.

"Why?" She simply asked , both of them just looking at each other. Ex boyfriend voodoo dolls scattered around them.

Lando smirked a little , sighing "cause then I'd have to come back here and have someone make even more of them. That's a lot of work when you could simply stop dating shitty guys. Save me the money too." He said so casually as though it was common knowledge.

Cherrie hummed , playing along. "Okay. I'll stop dating just so that you don't have to fly half way across the word to make voodoo dolls out of them." She replied , amused.

He just laid his head down on her chest , closing his eyes as he grabbed her hand and placed it on top of his head so that she would run her fingers through his hair. Smiling to himself when she did so without any complaint.

"Didn't say never date again." He murmured against her skin "just to date the right guy next time."

Cherrie wondered just who he thought the right guy could be. Sensing a layer of honesty and sheepishness beneath his teasing words that had him snuggling closer to her, ending their conversation there.

She looked down at him and just smiled, shaking her head to herself in amazement.

He was something else completely. She didn't know where he kept getting these ideas from.

Then she found herself staring at her best friend as he proudly put on his new helmet for the race , the one that he had been keeping from her . Telling her that he wanted her to be surprised when she finally saw it.

She could only gape in disbelief as she looked at the helmet he was wearing, a pretty normal design of his , if it wasn't for the sight of the giant pair of eyes on the front of his head.

A familiar pair of eyes staring right back at her, eyeliner and long lashes and all.

"Lando!" She cupped her hand over her mouth with with wide eyes in shock . Unable to believe what she was seeing.

"why are my eyes on your head?!" She gasped loudly .

Hearing several of the mechanics and people around them laugh quietly as they watched her freak out . A man already recording them for their Channel and Lando had one of the mechanics taking photos of her so that he could post them later.

Having expected this reaction and enjoying her disbelief greatly.

"So that you'll always be watching me no matter where I go. You're eyes are my seconds eyes.. like, I'm safe If your watching out for me . Ya get me?" He grinned at her, poking one of her eyes on his helmet proudly.

Having picked the picture from one that he had took of her on holiday , the sun having lit up her eyes making them a sea of colours, a glossy sheen over them. And the small crinkled by her eyes showing that she was smiling without even seeing her face.

Lando loved it and although everybody else thought he was insane for blowing her eyes up and plastering them on his helmet for the world to see. He thought it was a brilliant idea and was wearing his new helmet with pride.

Cherrie was still gaping at him, hands on red cheeks now, completely flustered and not knowing what to say this time around.

She could see one of their friends giving her a knowing look from the corner of her eye , which she struggled to ignore so easily this time around .

"I feel like this is sweet but yet..." letting out a disbelieving laugh as she stepped closer to him, tapping her vinyl eyes with a grin "it's also so creepy Lando. Oh my god!" She exhaled a laugh, shaking her head at him in amusement because this was such a Lando thing to do.

"I didn't know my left eye had a mole underneath it!" She gasped again as she squinted at his helmet, looking at the closely detailed print of her eyes carefully.

Lando lifted up his visor so he could see her better, nodding his head and waving his hand off at a team member telling him to wrap it up. That he needed to get into his car soon.

"Yeah. A small one just underneath your lashes. If you look closely it looks like a little heart. It's cute. It matches the one on the back of your thigh." He casually told her as he started pulling his gloves on.

Leaving Cherrie to look at her best friend in surprise "I have a mole on the back of my thigh? Where?!" This was news to her.

Lando just slyly chuckled and answered easily "right between your thigh and your right buttcheek." As though everybody knew that.

She could only look at him in disbelief , cheeks colouring as she gasped loudly "Lando! Have you been looking at my ass you bastard?!" Slapping his helmet covered head scoldingly as she realised that he must have spent a awful lot of time looking at her backside to see it.

He had no shame.

Simply giggling like a naughty child as he nudged her back , winking at her as he jumped into his car smoothly, grinning to himself as he saw the shocked look on her pretty face.

"You can't have a ass like that and expect me not to look. Don't be daft." He stated back to her casually , enjoying her speechless far too much.

"You'll see me-" he snorted to himself like a child as he slid his visor back down "at the finish line. Keep an eye out for me out there eh?" He joked, tapping his helmet again, waiting for her to do their race ritual like they always did.

Cherrie could only sigh , bending down and holding his helmet head in her hands. Staring straight into her own eyes on his head.

"you've made this so weird for me now." She complained lightly with a amused grin as she leant down to kiss his helmet head, right between her own eyes. "Good luck stupid!"

He just laughed and squeezed her hand three times before reluctantly letting go .

"I don't need luck when I've got you're eyes on me!" He couldn't help himself, he really couldn't .

"See you!"

Cherrie could only avoid their friends and families knowing gaze as she slowly walked back to her spot in the back to watch the race. Pursing her lips together to hold back her smile, ignoring her own burning cheeks as she heard max whisper teasingly

"Still just friends?"

"Best friends actually." She hissed back at him with a huff. Crossing her arms over her chest as she ignored their disbelieving laughs.

Then a few weeks later she and Lando were having their weekly sleepover together when he announced that he had gotten her another gift, just for this occasion.

With all of his ...stranger and stranger gifts recently , along with their friends knowing looks and constant badgering about their relationship. She couldn't help but be a little wary.

Looking at him with a slight frown as she watched him pull out something from the closet. Her eyes dropping down to the shirt he was wearing that already had her grinning face on, then back down to her own tshirt that also sported a large picture of Lando holding up a heart on the front too. A matching set that he had gotten them last week 'for a laugh.'

"Oh god. What have you got me now?" She laughed to ease her own nerves as she watched Lando spin back around with a mischievous look on his cute face.

He wiggled his eyebrows at her teasingly "don't worry. It's nothing crazy, just something to keep you warm , and something for you to cuddle with when I'm not here." He told her casually , fighting back his own grin so she didn't get suspicious.

She let out a sigh of relief , immediately excited at the thought of something snuggly.

"Oh my god you got me a blanket?!" She exclaimed happily when he pulled out the soft white material , smiling at him excitedly .

He nodded his head "yup. I also added my own personal touch.." he muttered with a small smirk as he dropped down the blanket to show her the full print.

Before she could see it, she quickly covered her eyes with her hand , not trusting him at all.

"You better not have put a photo of your ass on there Lando or so help you-" she started to warn him.

Lando just laughed loudly , snorting in amusement. "No I haven't! Although you would be blessed with a butt blanket of mine!" He said offended "open your eyes and have a look then you muppet!" He impatiently exclaimed when she hesitated too long .

Before finally letting out a long sigh and dropping her hands, looking at the picture on the large blanket silently for a moment . Before finally cracking a large smile, unable not to.

Because staring back at her was a smiling Lando posed out on a red back drop wearing heart covered boxers , a rose hanging out of his mouth as he posed like a sexy lady on a bed while half naked. and around him were the bold words 'aren't you lucky to have me as your best friend?'

And all Cherrie could think then was, perhaps their other friends were right. Normal , not so attached and crazy friends, didn't give gifts like this almost every week. Did they?

But then she looked past the blanket and to landos grinning face as he awaited for her reaction and simply sighed, smiling back at him in amusement.

"So very lucky. You weirdo . Where the hell did you even get those boxers from?!" She wondered with a laugh as he jumped onto the bed to wrap the blanket around her, wrapping her up in it like a burrito.

Cherrie simply letting him do what he wanted , knowing that it would make him happy.

"I asked daniel to get me them. Apparently he already had some left over from Valentine's Day." He told her casually . Leaning beside the bed to grab her next gift.

Cherrie looked at him alarmed "please tell me that you at least washed those-"

Lando giggled "they were brand new you idiot! God! How gross do you think I am?!" He exclaimed in amusement at the horrified look on her face at the thought of him in Daniels boxers.

Cherrie just looked at him pointedly "do you really want my answer to that?" She muttered to him.

He didn't even hesitate "no , not really. I like to think that I can do no wrong in your eyes." He answered her back . Grinning as he pulled out her next gift , already fighting off his own cackles.

"You ready for this one? I think this might blow your mind. I really do." He beamed down at her , eyes on her face ready to commit her Reaction to his memory forever.

She just sighed long and hard "go on then.."

She thought he couldn't beat the last gift but apparently she had underestimated him again.

Because she was yet again left in a state of disbelief as she looked at the life size body pillow with his face and body printed on it.

A cushioned Lando if you will. With hands and everything.

Her mouth dropped open in shock as she grabbed it from him, blinking down at the stuffed , life size Lando in astonsimhemnt .

"Where do you find these things lan?" Was all she could mutter, glancing up at her grinning best friend in slight concern. Wondering how he came up with stuff like this all of the time.

When she thought of buying somebody a gift, usually she thought of booze , flowers, chocolates or a gift card from their favourite store. But Lando ...Lando had never gotten her anything like that, ever.

Instead of a bottle of wine, he got her a life size body pillow of himself . Because that was just who he was. Or at least, for her. She was realising .

He didn't do this for any of there other friends. He only went overboard to see her laugh, coming up with these ridiculous gifts just to see her smile.

She felt the butterfly's rising in her chest and held back a loud sigh of realisation.

Oh no. She thought to herself grimly with her eyes glued onto Lando smiling face as he threw himself down next to her on the bed. Stuffed Lando in her arms as she cuddled it loosely, real Lando hugging her side as he looked up at her expectantly.

"I got it so that when I'm away, I'm still here with you. I know how much you hate sleeping alone soooo..." he nodded down to his cushioned self proudly "now you won't be. At least until I come back. Then he's out of the bed." He said seriously .

Oh fuck. Oh fuck me. Fucking fucks. Dear satan, she was completely screwed. Wasn't she?

She closed her eyes to herself as she hugged Lando to her, heart squeezing at how sweet he truly was behind all those jokes and teasing comments. He only ever had her happiness at the front of his mind.

Their friends and family were totally right. She realised a little too late.

But what the hell was she going to do with this information now?

Did she say something? Would he? Or would he just keep buying her all of these ridiculous gifts forever Under the disguise of just being a 'good friend'?

It turned out that she didn't have to wait that long to find out . Because not even two weeks later Cherrie was pulling up to her house with a screech after Lando had suddenly called her up to tell her that he had gotten her a surprise gift , that had just been delivered to her home.

Worry and excitement immediately filled her as she sped all the way home. Wondering what the hell he could have gotten her this time. Because the gifts had never stopped.

Within the last two weeks Lando had gotten her a rug with their faces on it. A glass jar filled with 10,000 of her favourite candy's from Europe.

A surfboard with his face on it, which she found amusing seeing as she had to sit on his vinyl face to use it. Something that Lando found hilarious , telling her casually 'that was the whole idea' like it was no big deal that she was surfing on his face .

So it was safe to say that she was a little concerned ,and a little bit edge about his next gift , which honestly was an understment , especially since she had finally come to terms with what all of this truly meant for her.

Landos love language was gift giving. That much was obvious. And so was what he was truly trying to get her to understand . She got that now. Mabye a little late but .. better late than never right?

And as she got out of her car she just couldn't believe was she was seeing, freezing in her spot on the gravel as she let out a loud, strangled gasp, alerting Lando of her arrival .

He turned around from where he had been proudly gazing up at his latest gift for her, breaking out into a large grin at the sight of her. His whole stomach a whole Damn zoo , heart beating wildly in his chest as he watched her reaction closely.

"Lando..." she breathed out with wide eyes, hand over her heart in shock as she craned her neck back at the giant statue that was planted in the middle of her driveway . A centre piece . A massive, obnoxious ... insane statue of..

She swallowed . Gaping at the ridiculously large statue of herself and Lando hugging , the stone carved beautifully , perfectly showing their matching smiles that she now realised were full of love. Cheeks pressed against each other , a model made out of a picture she recognised instantly .

Lando had paid someone to make a statue out of the photo of them after his first race win. His helmet in one hand and his arm around her waist, the statue showing him still in his racing suit and Cherrie in his merch, hugging him proudly.

It was the same photo that Lando had framed in his home in every room. The same photo in his wallet, as his phone screen and hers too. It was a special moment for them.

And now he had it blown up into a life like statue, bigger than they were . Right in front of her driveway for everyone to see.

She couldn't believe it.

She swallowed thickly as she felt Lando shuffle next to her, knocking his shoulder into hers gently, laughing a little nervously when she went quite for a little long, lost to her thoughts and their memories.

"Lando?" She spoke up quietly , eyes never leaving the statue of them.

She was Stunned . Amazed. Amused ... you name an emotion , she was feeling it all then.

His eyes never left the side of her face , having expected her to laugh or call him stupid.. but instead she just looked calm and honestly like she was seconds away from bursting into giggles .

He felt his heart race and it was his turn to swallow nervously now.

"Yeah?" He breathed out , eyes scanning her beautiful face , trying to understand what she was thinking .

Cherrie finally looked at him, lips quirking into a small smile, displaying her amusement as she finally asked him point blank ,

"Are you in love with me Lando?" Already knowing the answer but wanting to hear it from him anyways.

Lando immediately flushed a bright red, laughing nervously as he looked between her and the statue with a anxious smile . Feeling her hand slide into his own, intertwining their fingers to stop him from fidgeting with his own.

"What makes you say that?" He meekly answered , getting a amused side eye in response.

She couldn't have giggled any louder if she tried. Squeezing his hand three times and tugging him into her side as she did so, hearing him let out a loud sigh of defeat as he wrapped his arm around the back of her neck , hugging her closely . Knowing then that his little game was finally over.

She knew.

They all did.

"Well, I don't know about you but none of my other friends have ever bought me a statue of us hugging before. Neither have they bought me voodoo dolls of my ex's, a body pillow with their face on it, a helmet with my eyes on it and-" she started to list of all the insane things he had gotten her recently .

Watching as Lando flushed redder and redder, smiling against her cheek as he realised that she knew. Letting out a quiet laugh, a little embarrassed but mostly relieved that she finally got it now.

"Yeah! Yeah! Okay! Ok!" He rushed out before she could go on with the ridiculously long list of insane gifts he had gotten her over the years.

There was a lot. Okay.

"So...?" She nudged him teasingly as she cupped his face in her hand so that he would look at her again, heart melting at his red cheeks and bashful smile.

"You love me?" She wanted to know.

Lando could only roll his eyes at her playfully , cupping the back of her head as he nudged his nose against hers gently like he always did.

"Always." He whispered to her, feeling a weight being lifted from his chest now that he finally got to tell her how he truly felt.

"I've been in love with you since you accidentally walked face first into the door of that five star restaurant in front of everyone .. then told me that you meant to do that and that you just wanted to make a entrance .." he recalled with a fond laugh, giggling loudly when she let out a loud groan of embarrassment.

It was a memory that she had tried so hard to forget. She couldn't believe that Lando chose it as the one to realise that he loved her then.

It was just like him to pick one of the most embarrassing moments of her life as the one to tell her that was the moment that he knew he loved her .

It was also kinda sweet too. She had to admit, no matter how mortified she was.

"Oh my god.. why then?!" She whined jokingly , wrapping her arms around his neck. Eyes never leaving his shining ones as he pulled her closer to him, making sure that there was no space left between them.

Lando just smiled and shook his head at her affectionately. "Because you were so embarrassed but you still smiled at me and I just knew.." he breathed out, forever in awe of her. "That I wanted you in my life forever. Even if it was just as a friend."

Cherrie smiled a little, quirking her brow up at him teasingly . "And now?" She whispered "you still want me as only a friend?"

Lando didn't answer her. Instead he just cupped her jaw in his hands and kissed her as though it was something that they had done a million times before.

Their lips pressing together perfectly as she melted against him, tilting her head to deepen the kiss, his hand trailing down to her neck as he hummed contently against her mouth. Their tongues slowly brushing together as his other hand trailed down to grab at her waist , laughing breathlessly against her lips as he felt everything fall right into its place.

Right where he belonged. In her arms. Against her lips, he smiled.

She just leaned forward and kissed him softly again "and I love you. Always have and always will." She whispered to him. Meaning every word.

And all she could think then was that their friends were never going to let this go. Knowing that they were right and that she was wrong.

But she would take the teasing and the knowing laughs for the rest of her life. Just for him. Because who better was there to fall in love with than her best friend? The man who knew her inside out. Who she could be silly with. Would never judge her.

Someone that loved her just the way that she was. And vice versa.

Better late than never she supposed. He had her now. She was his and he was hers. Just how it was supposed to be, crazy gifts and all.
