୨୧ she's super close with joe despite the seven-year age difference. ୨୧ joe is super proud of all of her hard work and dedication in everything that she does. ୨୧ the entire bangles team buys her merch and listens to her music in the locker room even if they don't admit it to anyone. ୨୧ growing up, she wanted to be famous so bad that she begged her parents to let her audition for acting gigs, and later she started putting out music. ୨୧ she lives on her own out in la, but she has her own bedroom at joe's house in cincinnati for when she visits or just wants to get away for a while. ୨୧ her and olivia are absolute best friends and it warms joe's heart to have two of the most important women in his life being so close to one another. ୨୧ even though her brother plays in the nfl, she's a huge nhl fan, but most specifically she's a jersey devil's fan. ୨୧ her best friend is joey king. ୨୧ she loves anything sweet, but she's a big sucker for donuts. ୨୧ she's not a real blonde but keeps up with dying her hair because she doesn't like her original hair color. ୨୧ she calls joe almost every day but she'll call him more than once when she's really missing her brother. ୨୧ she dated her girl meets world costar, tanner buchanan, in 2016 before the two split in 2018 on mutual terms. ୨୧ during the summer, when she's not on tour, she's spending time at the lake house with the boys, but she leaves early to make sure she sees her brother before their schedules get hectic. ୨୧ she will NOT eat mcdonald's, she's told herself that she can't have it and she's sticking to it. ୨୧ she prefers waffles over pancakes and cupcakes over cake. ୨୧ she's allergic to nuts and makes sure to keep her epipen with her at all times. ୨୧ joe is her emergency contact so the one time in the summer where she accidently eats something with nuts (the boys at the lake house freaking out during) he jumps on the first flight to michigan just to check on her. ୨୧ she doesn't keep in touch with any of her girl meets world co-stars, but she has kept in contact with corey (her closest male friend) and sometimes she's seen commenting on peyton meyers instagram. ୨୧ she hates her middle name and knows she's in trouble when her parents (and even joe) call her by her first and middle name. ୨୧ she has a small butterfly tattoo behind her ear that she got matching with olivia. ୨୧ she has a necklace that was given to her from ja'marr chase for her birthday with a diamond encrusted plaque of her name that she never takes off. ୨୧ to add to the necklace from ja'marr, she had a shorter necklace that has jacks' initials hanging from it that he gave her that she also hardly ever takes off.
𓆩ᥫ᭡𓆪┊KAELYN & JACK'S TIMELINE!
୨୧ in 2021, she was on james cordan where she played 'spill your guts' and admitted to having a thing for new jersey devil's player, jack hughes. ୨୧ after the episode aired, everyone on the internet freaked out, making sure to tag the devil's center player in everything. ୨୧ jack was seen commenting on her instagram just a few days after the episode aired. ୨୧ joe, being the overprotective big brother that he is, made sure he did his research on the hockey plater before approving of them. ୨୧ their relationship was confirmed in june of 2021 when he posted pictures of her from a concert he went to while she was on tour with the caption, "my girl❤️". ୨୧ jack's family adores kaelyn, her and luke ending up being the best of friends due to being the same age.

Chris Geidner at Law Dork:
The future of mifepristone access is up in the air on multiple fronts right now — just five months after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a challenge to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s treatment of the medication abortion drug.
In June, a unanimous Supreme Court held that the private plaintiffs challenging the FDA’s rules surrounding mifepristone access lacked standing to bring their claims. At that point, the challenges had already been whittled down. They were not to the original approval of mifepristone itself but to the 2016-and-since changes to access of the drug, including allowing the mailing of the drug by ending the in-person dispensing requirement and increasing the gestational limits on when mifepristone can be used. Now, though, Donald Trump has won election to the presidency — and questions about what his new administration will do to federal policy surrounding the drug are front and center. Additionally, moves in recent weeks in existing litigation suggest that neither backers of the drug’s availability nor those seeking to restrict its access are willing to sit back and wait for the Trump administration to act. The result could be a flurry of litigation in the coming months, some all but forcing the Trump administration to quickly weigh in on the matter and, potentially, sending one or more questions back to the Supreme Court sooner rather than later.
Relevant to the mifepristone litigation, Trump has announced that former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is his nominee for attorney general, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is his nominee to run the Department of Health and Human Services, and Marty Makary is his nominee to run the FDA. Since the election, anti-abortion groups and activists have been “emboldened,” as The Washington Post reported, despite abortion protections passing almost everywhere they were on the ballot. There will be efforts to push the administration to adopt anti-abortion positions, but, beyond that, those same groups will be going to court regardless of what the new administration does. Although far-right groups like Project 2025 were advocating for a Trump administration to resurrect and use the 1873 Comstock Act to prevent mailing of mifepristone (and, potentially, any other “article or thing” used in an abortion, under reasoning I described in this article), neither Trump nor any of these key nominees have backed such a step. Although Bondi certainly identifies as “pro-life,” the primary case cited from her time as Florida attorney general is her 2016 defense of a Florida law requiring a 24-hour waiting period before a woman or other pregnant person could get an abortion. It is important to remember that she left office more than three years before Roe v. Wade was overturned. As such, limits in her arguments in the case don’t tell us — in either direction — what her views would be today.
[...]
Missouri, Kansas, and Idaho — the trio of states — filed a motion on Oct. 11 to amend their complaint in the case, basically, to add to it in light of new information and in the wake of the Supreme Court’s standing ruling. On Nov. 1, however, the Justice Department filed a motion to dismiss the case, as well as a memorandum of law supporting that and opposing the states’ request to amend their complaint because, the lawyers wrote, “Once Plaintiffs’ Complaint is dismissed, the separate Complaint filed by the three Intervenor States—the States of Missouri, Idaho, and Kansas (“the States”)—must likewise be dismissed. The Fifth Circuit has squarely held that intervention requires a jurisdictionally proper suit. Because this Court never had jurisdiction over Plaintiffs’ claims, it could not obtain jurisdiction over the States’ claims.“ Danco Laboratories, the maker of Mifiprex, filed a similar motion and argument.
[...]
Most important to all of this is what happens if Kacsmaryk rejects DOJ’s request or does not rule by Jan. 20. At that point, although Danco’s position isn’t likely to change, it is possible that DOJ and the FDA’s position in the case could change. If not dismissed by Jan. 20, then, it is very possible that this case could force the new Trump administration to very quickly weigh in on these questions about mifepristone access. Remarkably, that is not all. In a less closely watched case, a group of Democratic-led states sued the FDA in Washington to protect — and, in fact, expand — access to mifepristone. The case had been in a holding pattern while some Republican-led states unsuccessfully sought to intervene in the case, but it recently got going again. The Democratic-led states filed their motion for summary judgment in October, arguing that mifepristone should not be subject to “special restrictions” when “[i]t is even safer than such well-known drugs as Tylenol, Viagra, and insulin” that have no such restrictions.

With Trump's win, the future of mifepristone could be more decisively settled this SCOTUS term or the next one.

Timeline: Part 4 -July 2017
Previously:
2015 - April 2017 | An Update
May 2017 - June 2017
This piece features events, press, and PR from the summer of 2017. You will see competing narratives - the Daily Mail leaking Meghan's dossier drip by drip by drip and Meghan's team counterattacking with engagement rumors.
There are two main stories in the royal sphere during this time that we know Meghan is paying attention to, as these most definitely shape her understanding of what it means to be royal: royals taking glamorous summer vacations and daily coverage of Diana's life, the impact of her death, and her lasting legacy to the world.
Fasten your seatbelts!
(Note - this was initially meant to also include the August 2017 events but Tumblr was having problems saving the post.)
July 1, 2017: The Cambridges, Harry, and the Spencers attend a private memorial service at the Spencers' Althorp estate for Diana. Meghan's relationship history is published and it's revealed she left Cory for Harry.
July 2, 2017: Charles plans to host a 70th birthday party for Camilla and the Express speculates whether Harry will bring Meghan with him. Additionally, the broadcast network that airs Suits in Britain drops the series from its slate and won't show its upcoming seventh season.
July 3, 2017: Kensington Palace announces that the Cambridges will visit Poland and Germany.
July 4, 2017: Kensington Palace confirms that Harry will have a role in the upcoming state visit by King Felipe and Queen Letizia. Meghan teases whether she will attend Wimbledon 2017. Harry's scandals are revisited.
July 5, 2017: Meghan's appearance at the 2016 Create & Cultivate conference resurfaces, as do her comments from The Tig about being biracial.
July 6, 2017: Meghan does another airport pap walk as returns to Toronto after spending 10 days in London with Harry.
July 8, 2017: Meghan leaks that she has tried on wedding dresses with friends and is beginning to think about a wedding at Westminster Abbey. The Daily Mail publishes all about Meghan's first marriage and the divorce. Katie Nicholl publishes several scoops: 1) Meghan keeps clothes at Nottingham Cottage, 2) Meghan is so familiar to KP security and the RPOs that she doesn't need a security pass to enter, 3) Harry wants to be engaged by his birthday, and 4) they want to debut Meghan as his fiancee at Toronto Invictus Games.
July 9, 2017: Harry attends a music festival and is photographed getting close to a blonde woman. At the same time, there is fast-spreading gossip that Camilla disapproves of the relationship. Meghan gets worried: she hints about the engagement to get Harry back in line and tries to assuage concerns about her marital history by explaining that being married to Harry will be different than when she was married to Trevor. Meghan merches a baseball cap.
July 10, 2017: Meghan doesn't like the comparisons to Pippa Middleton anymore (which she began, mind you) and says they look nothing alike. It's announced that Trevor is thinking about writing a book about his relationship with Meghan, sparking another round of rumors that the marriage broke down when Meghan cheated on Trevor with a Suits castmate.
July 11, 2017: It's revealed that Meghan was still dating Cory when she began dating Harry.
July 12, 2017: Meghan attends the Suits party to celebrate taping their 100th episode. Meghan's team puts out a story that she and Harry are so alike because Meghan's uncle is the leader of the Eastern Orthodox Catholic Church, just like Harry's grandmother is the leader of the Church of England. Rita Ora flirts with Harry and Meghan gets mad, saying she doesn't want to marry Harry.
July 13, 2017: The Spanish State Visit begins, with Harry accompanying King Felipe and Queen Letizia to Westminster Abbey and attending the state banquet (where he sits next to Rose Cholmondeley...iykyk). Meghan's "one tear, left eye, go" interview resurfaces and she tries to be a beauty guru again. Suits Season 7 premieres in the U.S.. Meghan practically calls Kate a Stepford Wife.
July 14, 2017: Meghan gets more private protection and increases her security team.
July 16, 2017: A friend of Harry says they're engaged and everyone is looking forward to the after-party more than the wedding. Meghan leaks that Harry will quit the royal family for her and her "don't give it five minutes if you're not going to give it five years" interview resurfaces. Harry wins his IPSO privacy case against The Mail for publishing paparazzi photographs taken in Jamaica.
July 17, 2017: Meghan sets up Chelsy to be Harry's Camilla in their marriage.
July 18, 2017: Meghan tries to be a yoga influencer again. Meghan also brings back her gender equality platform and reminds us about her soap commercial.
July 19, 2017:
Pictures from Meghan's childhood are published, including a photograph saying/showing she won Homecoming Queen in high school (US high school is ages 14 - 18). Speculation begins immediately that Meghan has had cosmetic surgery to minimize her black traits and Markle feeatures, including chemical treatments for her hair.
Meghan hints that Harry will propose on her birthday and that they will elope to marry.
Meghan leaks that she's worth $5 million.
July 20, 2017: Meghan says Harry will propose soon and they have no intentions of eloping.
July 22, 2017: Meghan's ice bucket challenge video resurfaces, causing speculation over how she knows Rory McIlroy and what the nature of their relationship is.
July 24, 2017: Meghan promotes Suits and hints that she wants IVF twins as soon as possible after the wedding. (The IVF twins story is important for two reasons. One, because in the first picture taken of Meghan after the pregnancy is announced, she is carrying two purple binders. We know she likes to virtue signal, so many people believe this is her hinting that they are expecting boy-girl twins. Second, because while she ended up having a boy, the decor and theme for her February baby shower indicated she was expecting a girl.)
July 25, 2017: Prince Albert of Monaco (son of Grace Kelly) gives advice to Meghan and Harry and British Vogue writes about Meghan and her fashion.
July 26, 2017: Meghan claps back against the rumors of plastic surgery by getting medical experts to say she hasn't had any work done.
July 27, 2017: Meghan teases an engagement in the Express, who recaps the relationship to date.
July 28, 2017: Meghan merches Rachel Zane's wardrobe. She's spotted in London, supposedly with Doria (though Doria is never seen). Meghan's insecurity over Harry's past causes problems for him.
July 29, 2017: An open letter is published to William and Kate, urging them not to have a third child. This comes after playful comments by the pair while on tour in Poland and Germany earlier in the month when they were gifted baby items by fans on walkabout.
July 31, 2017:
Christopher Geidt is forced out retires and is replaced by Charles's favorite, Edward Young.
Kate hires Catherine Quinn as her new private secretary.
Meghan is worried a Cambridge baby is going to steal her thunder and leaks that the Cambridges won't have any more children. After Kate's third pregnancy is announced and this article resurfaces, speculation begins over what Meghan knew (because Harry leaked like a sieve to her).
William and Catherine are in Belgium for the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele.
Lainey gossips that the recent shakeups in palace household staff has to do with Charles's discomfort with William and Harry operating independently of him. She also confirms for the first time that Charles was angry with the KP love shield because it overshadowed his work in the Middle East.

[Condensed from a June 11, 2024 Military.com article by Ronald Lackey (Retired Major, U.S. Air Force)] –
When running for president in January 2016, Trump held a "fundraiser" for veterans. However, he didn't give the money to veterans' charities until after investigative reporters revealed that veterans had not received the donations. [Turns out, Trump was illegally siphoning money from the charity, using it like a piggy bank for his own personal gain.] Trump was fined $2 million by a judge for fraud and deceptive practices tied to the event.
As president, Trump canceled a visit to an American Cemetery near Paris, telling staffers, "Why should I go to that cemetery? It's filled with losers." During that same trip, he also told senior staffers that the U.S. Marines who died there were "suckers" for getting killed. Trump didn't even want to be seen with veteran amputees because, he said "it doesn't look good for me."
More ominously, Trump said high-ranking military members who disagreed with his political beliefs should be executed.
This is the total disregard Trump has for the honorable men and women who sacrifice their bodies, family time, and even their lives for an American cause greater than themselves.
President Biden, however, has been concerned with veterans for decades. His late son, an Army officer, died of cancer that the president believes came from his exposure to chemicals in wartime burn pits. That loss has driven a very personal commitment to the welfare of military members. While serving as president, Biden has signed more than two dozen laws that benefit veterans, including the PACT Act, which expanded the benefits and services for veterans exposed to toxic chemicals.
Working with partners in Congress, Biden's administration also expanded veterans access to health care and child care; took steps to curtail veteran homelessness (and asked Congress to triple its housing vouchers to needy veterans); lowered health care costs for World War II veterans; and expanded support to military suicide prevention programs (and established the 988 Veterans Crisis Line).
Biden has demonstrated his commitment to veterans' welfare throughout his decades of public service. His reelection would genuinely benefit military members and veterans.
Trump has shown only contempt.

The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games will see competitors parade on boats along the River Seine through central Paris on Friday.
An unprecedented security operation is in place, with organisers also facing challenges over the cleanliness of the Seine, costs and the environmental impact of the Games.
When are the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games?
The summer Olympics run from 26 July to 11 August, with 10,500 athletes competing in 329 events.
The Paralympics take place from 28 August to 8 September, featuring 4,400 athletes in 549 events.
There will be 206 countries represented at the Olympics, and 184 at the Paralympics.
Where will Olympic and Paralympic events take place?
The main athletics events will be at the Stade de France, on the northern outskirts of Paris.
There are also Olympic and Paralympic venues in the city centre.
The Pont d'Iena, for example, is hosting cycling events, while beach volleyball is at the Eiffel Tower and the marathon starts at the Hotel de Ville and ends at Les Invalides.
Tumblr media
Is the Seine clean enough for swimming?
Open water swimming and triathlon events are due to take place in the Seine, more than 100 years after swimming in the river was banned.
Tests done in mid-June showed that levels of E. coli in the water were 10 times the acceptable level.
However, Games organisers hope July sunshine and measures like a rainwater storage basin will make it clean enough.
Ahead of the Games, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo took a dip to try to prove the river was safe.
Tumblr media
How are France's security forces preparing for the Games?
The Games will be protected by the largest peacetime deployment of security forces in French history
Up to 75,000 police, soldiers and hired guards will be on patrol in Paris at any one time to guard venues and events.
The use of the Seine for the opening ceremony, with crowds watching the parade from the banks, is a first for the modern Olympics.
Tumblr media
The original plan was to give free tickets to 600,000 members of the public to watch from the river's banks.
However, the government was worried about potential threats such as a drone attack, and spectator numbers were scaled back to 326,000.
More than 220,000 of those will be invited guests and 104,000 will be members of the public who have bought tickets.
Some 44,000 barriers have been erected, with QR codes for residents and others seeking access to the river Seine and its islands.
Many of the barriers will be removed after the opening ceremony.
Intelligence services uncovered two plots against the country by suspected Islamic militants in early 2024.
In May, a man was detained on suspicion of planning an attack on the torch relay in Bordeaux, and another man was arrested in southern France over a plan to attack an Olympic football venue.
How much are the Games costing?
The cost of this year's Games is estimated to be about 9bn euros (£7.6bn), less than any of the previous four Games — in Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, London, and Beijing.
Much of the funding is coming from private companies, as well as sales of tickets and broadcasting rights.
The government's official auditors have said it may have to pay between 3bn and 5bn euros (£2.5bn and £4.2bn) for costs such as policing.
Are the Games environmentally friendly?
The organising committee of Paris 2024 has promised to make it the greenest Games in Olympic history, with half the carbon footprint of London 2012 and Rio 2016.
The Games will be held in the same city where, in 2015, world leaders agreed to try to prevent global temperatures rising by more than 1.5C.
About 95% of the Olympic and Paralympic sites are either existing structures or temporary ones.
The organisers say they are using as much recycled material as they can — including recycled cardboard beds for athletes — and trying to minimise carbon emissions.
However, it has been reported that thousands of air-conditioning units have been ordered for Olympic Village rooms by some national teams.
Are the Games pushing up prices in Paris?
Millions of visitors are expected in Paris during the Games, with ticket holders expected to spend an estimated 2.6bn euros (£2.2bn).
Hoteliers in Paris pushed up their rates, in many cases doubling them or more, in anticipation of a big rise in demand.
But there have been reports that many hotels have had unexpectedly low sales.
Bus and metro fares are also doubling in the capital during the Games.
In January, the Louvre art gallery put up its entrance fees by almost 30%.

Fixing your heart: The triumphant return of My Chemical Romance
Aimee Hallsworth explores My Chemical Romance’s sensational comeback in light of their remarkable journey through pain and struggle
Aimee Hallsworth | Sunday June 5 2022 | varsity.co.uk
On an otherwise unassuming Thursday in early May, with little fanfare and no promotion, long-mourned cult sensation My Chemical Romance released their first single since the group broke up in 2013. This new output comes in conjunction with the beginning of the band’s global reunion tour and, as "Welcome to the Black Parade" re-enters the Billboard top 200, their explosive return to the music scene has been nothing short of a sensation.
“A sense of clarity and purpose shines through the song”
The new track, “The Foundations of Decay”, filters over a static noise, building quietly. A sober guitar accompanies the distorted singing of vocalist Gerard Way before the chorus swells into an explosively triumphant crescendo of noise, as Way’s fluting voice carries over the thundering drums. The song is both completely new and wonderfully familiar: like revisiting an old friend. Since the band’s last studio album, Danger Days, all the members, except bassist Mikey Way, have produced solo albums (multiple in the case of guitarist Frank Iero). While Way drew on Britpop influences for Hesitant Alien, Iero lent far more into his punk and indie-rock interests in his first album, Stomachaches. Guitarist Ray Toro’s 2016 alt-rock album Remember the Laughter is masterful, characterised by his soft vocals and wide-ranging musical ability: he plays the lion’s share of instruments on the record. An appreciation of the diversity of these efforts highlights the different influences each member brings to the band: from Toro’s subtle melodies to Iero’s explosive energy, all of which can be felt in their new song.

“The Foundations of Decay” is an anthem of reunion and of healing. As with many of Way’s lyrics, it’s intensely personal and revisits the theme explored in the band’s very first track: “Skylines and Turnstiles”, where Way expresses the trauma of witnessing 9/11. They meditate on what kind of progress has been made since that moment, both on a personal and global level. There’s a sharp dissonance between the desolate state of world affairs and the mental stability that Way and the bandmates have achieved in the years since they split up. A sense of clarity and purpose shines through the song which lacks the escapism and fantastical theatrics that dominate the bulk of their discography. There’s a sense that music is no longer a form of life support or therapy that Way describes in the video diaries chronicling the band’s early days. It is not a song recounting a harrowing battle with trauma but an exploration of healing that anguish. By lying in the "foundations of decay", one can uncover the roots of the pain that must be healed in order to grow. When Way croons out "you must fix your heart", it is not stance but a stipulation – the heart must be fixed in order to live authentically.
“This is a group of people who have a deep bond with both each other and the crowd”
This celebration of healing is evident in the live shows the band have played so far, all of which have been jubilant expressions of love for everything that My Chemical Romance stands for. These shows have been some of the best in their already impressive career primarily because they are having so much fun. Not tied to an album, there’s room to experiment and change the set list each night. By mixing up their entire discography, lesser known B-sides like “Mastas of Ravenkroft” have been aired on stage alongside classics like “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)”, showcasing their talent without poor mental health and bad coping mechanisms looming overhead.
youtube

The band have all struggled with various mental health problems and addiction over the years. That rawness is reflected in their art. A dominating factor in their staggering success has been the connectivity between the struggles of the band and the struggles of their listeners. When Way rejoices with a crowd in being alive, it’s more profound than just basking in the moment, it’s a celebration of overcoming mental anguish together.
It’s extraordinary to see Way on stage, 45 and joyful, when at one point it was uncertain he would live past 25. The crowds waving at Mikey’s children and Toro kissing Way during one of the Milton Keynes sets crystallises the joyous affection which ripples through their shows. This is a group of people who have a deep bond with both each other and the crowd who exultantly chant their lyrics. In one of his various on-stage speeches, Way explains how he used to work the crowds at gigs before being able to release that self-consciousness, proudly exclaiming: “and now I just feel connected to f-ing every one of you.” The audience roars exuberantly in response. This joy and authenticity seems to be at the centre of My Chemical Romance’s journey moving forward; the band seem so delightfully comfortable in themselves after battling extreme personal hardships and mental demons for so long. It’s going to be nothing but exhilarating to see where they go next.

to find promise of peace (and the solace of rest): a TMA fanfic

Chapter 16: June 2016
Gerard’s eyes snap open, and the world above him is bright and white. He assumes that means, despite all odds, there is a heaven and he’s somehow earned a place in it. He’s lying on a path of gold, the light of God is shining all around him, and when he sits up, he’s going to see a pair of golden gates and a benevolent man with a white beard and a halo waving him in, and his father will be there with open arms and a sympathetic ear. Maybe it’s even taken him long enough to get here that Melanie and Martin will be there too, old and bent but getting younger with every step, and they’ll be in paradise together.
All of this passes through his mind in an addled second, only to be abruptly replaced with disorientating dizziness, a cold rush down his spine, and a sudden lurch of nausea as he sits up too fast and his head swims. The thin white sheet covering him head to toe slithers down to his waist, making him shiver with both the tickle of the cloth and the sudden extreme cold.
There’s a clatter of metal and a loud scream that makes his head throb. He turns and sees a woman in scrubs and a surgical bonnet pressed against the wall, a clipboard clutched to her chest and a tray of tools that probably aren’t sterile anymore scattered on the floor in front of her. Her eyes are wide, her face pale, and she’s trembling. There’s also…something else. Gerard isn’t sure how to describe it, except that it’s black, and pulsing, and directly over her heart.
And it’s calling to him. Which is never a good sign.
Questions swirl through his mind—where am I, what’s going on, who are you, what happened—but when he opens his mouth, all that comes out is a rattle and wheeze and a puff of cold air.
The woman scrabbles away from him, stumbles, and falls over, knocking down another tray as she does so. Concerned, Gerard tries to get up, and the world swims again. He feels…frail is the only word he can come up with. Tired. Hungry. Weak. He puts his hand down to steady himself and encounters smooth, cold metal, raised slightly at the edges.
The woman presses a hand to her chest and takes several deep, steadying breaths before pushing herself to her feet. She still looks shaky, but she directs a glare at Gerard before turning towards the door and bellowing, “Lucas!”
She begins gathering the tools. Gerard’s eyes are fixed on that black, pulsing…something. It seems to be getting darker, richer, more intense, but also more solid. Like he could reach out and touch it, and oh, God, he wants to. He doesn’t know what it means, but he wants it. It whispers seductively, promising him…what? The whispers aren’t real. Just—
A tall, gangly figure, younger than the woman, pops through the door. “You called, Doc?”
“Lucas, this sort of thing isn’t funny,” the woman scolds, gesturing at Gerard. “Get your friend out of here and set our John Doe out for the autopsy.”
“I did set out the John Doe, and I don’t—fuck!” The young man’s eyes fall on Gerard and almost pop out of his head. “What the hell?”
Gerard takes a ragged breath, then another, and forces the words out. They come out harsh, raw, little more than a whisper, crackling in the frigid air. “Where…am…I?”
The woman looks even more deeply suspicious, but says, “You’re in Christiana Hospital, son. In the morgue.”
“You were dead,” the young man adds. “Like, dead-dead. They found you in a burned-out shack and they said you weren’t—”
“Lucas,” the woman interrupts, and the young man, presumably Lucas, subsides. “Evidently there’s been some kind of mistake, young man. What’s your name?”
There has been a mistake, Gerard is sure of it, and why is he cold, how can they touch him, he—no, this isn’t right, none of this is right. He looks down at his hands. They’re pale, almost translucent, ice-blue and shaking. The eyes tattooed on each joint, in contrast, are perfectly clear and sharp, almost twinkling. They seem to be made of…whatever is on that woman’s chest. She still seems to be having trouble catching her breath, and the thing heaves and pulses with every exhale, but she’s gone from looking afraid to looking annoyed.
Gerard tries to stand, and the room swims. He nearly collapses to his knees. He’s hungry, so hungry, so drained of everything and he needs, he craves…something, but he doesn’t know what. Maybe food, maybe water, maybe sleep, but he just woke up from sleep so it can’t be that…he doesn’t get it, he doesn’t understand.
Or maybe, he thinks as the woman and Lucas come towards him and his eyes are drawn to the thing on her chest, maybe he just doesn’t want to understand.
The woman reaches out to grab him. The second she’s in range, the almost feral need in him sharpens to a deadly point and he has to, he has to touch it, to take it, to let it sustain him…
Wait.
The word darts through his mind, a single clear thought trying to cut through the black desire and need, but it’s too little too late. His hand shoots out faster than he can control it and grabs, not the woman’s chest but the blackness atop it. She stops dead and her eyes go wide, her breath suddenly stopping as she clutches at her chest.
“Doc!” Lucas springs forward to grab her, ignoring Gerard as the doctor sways on her feet. Gerard is the only one who can see the black thing flow into his hand and course through his body. Every single one of his veins suddenly stands out inky-black for a moment, then blinding white. Strength fills his limbs, the hunger and exhaustion and pain drains away, and the cold doesn’t really disappear, but he can tolerate it. He gasps at the rush as it reaches his brain—
—then draws his hand back sharply, eyes widening, as the doctor’s eyes go completely vacant and she drops into Lucas’ arms.
“Doc! Doc! Dr. Weston!” Lucas lowers her to the ground and feels desperately for a pulse. “Shit—help! I need help!”
He begins pressing her chest rapidly, fingers laced together and shoulders braced, but Gerard can tell it’s useless. To his eyes, the woman—Dr. Weston—has gone grey, like a faded old photograph. She’s dead. Her life force is gone…circulating through Gerard’s system, powering his body. Sustaining him. Fueling him.
Shit.
“Call someone!” Lucas bawls at him, jerking his head at a phone on the wall. “Tell them you’re calling from the morgue, Exam Room B, and we need transport to the ER, stat!”
Lucas hasn’t been Marked, as far as Gerard can tell—that’s never been his gift—so he doesn’t understand what just happened, or know that this is useless. And Gerard can’t, won’t, tell him, won’t bring yet another innocent bystander into this, not when he can still get out unscathed. Won’t doom another soul to this cursed knowledge if he can help it. So he goes over to the wall, lifts the receiver, and dictates Lucas’ message, hoping he sounds appropriately panicked and not utterly calm—or utterly guilty.
And when the orderlies with the gurney rattle past him and order him out of the way, he sidles into the main room, snags a pair of scrubs set aside and waiting, and runs before anyone can notice him, or stop him.
He shouldn’t be able to get far. Not without having issues. He’s been a smoker for too long and his stamina is quite frankly shot, and then there’s the fact that he’s dead, or should be anyway, and not ten minutes ago he couldn’t even stand on his own without the room spinning. But he sprints and manages to clear the hospital, sprint through a thickly-wooded area on the other side of the road, dart through a clearing blazed for power lines, and into another strip of woods before pulling up short at the sound of heavy traffic not far away. He isn’t even winded.
What the fuck is going on?
Gerard stops and looks at his hands. Even in the shadows where he stands, he can see them; while they aren’t as ghostly white as they were previously, he’s still pretty fair-skinned. The tattoos on each knuckle, in contrast, have faded from the sharp black lines of before to an almost bluish-grey. There’s no sign of what these hands have just done, but…
But he feels stronger. Healthier. Fuller. Like he’s just had a full plate of Melanie’s special-recipe shepherd’s pie and a cup of Martin’s tea. He feels like he could take on the whole world.
Realization crests over him like a wave, and Gerard drops slowly to his knees, weighed down by the pressure of the truth. In the moment of his death, his second death, the release from the half-life he was trapped in, he begged the universe for life. And the universe responded. He’s been claimed, Marked, and not by the power he’s half-served and half-feared most of his life, not by the one that has Martin in its clutches, not by the one he’d ever expect.
Terminus has always been the one he’s, well, feared the least. Always sort of greeted it as a mate, in a way. He remembers reading the Discworld books to Martin (and Melanie, who wouldn’t leave his side) the one and only time he was ever sick enough they were able to convince him to stay in bed, and how all three of them agreed they wouldn’t mind Terminus so much if he was like Terry Pratchett’s Death. Now Gerard wonders if that’s what put him in this mess to begin with.
He pushes himself to his feet and looks around him. There’s a motorway, a pretty busy one from the sound of it, and he’s tempted for a moment to run out into it. But he doesn’t know if he can die now, not like that…and besides, he didn’t want to die, did he? That’s why he’s here.
Not like this, a voice in the back of his mind whispers. You don’t want to live like this. Not at this cost.
It’s high. Probably too high. But at the same time…well. If he’s being perfectly honest, he wants to go home. He wants to see Martin and Melanie again, maybe get their advice. If nothing else, he wants to die on his own terms, in his own home, the way he wanted to the first time—with his brother and sister there to hold his hands.
Besides. He has to find out if the old bat has turned back the Unknowing yet. And whether she has or not, he has to warn them about the Watcher’s Crown.
Taking a deep breath, Gerard jogs towards the motorway, not to fling himself in front of a car, but to flag one down. He’s got to figure out where he is, and when it is…and then he can worry about getting home. Somehow.

Half YF-12 and half SR-71: the story of “The Bastard,” the only SR-71C ever built
By Dario Leone
May 1 2018
SR-71C S/N 61-7981 was nicknamed “The Bastard” since it was a hybrid comprised of the rear fuselage of the first YF-12A and a functional engineering mockup of an SR-71A forward fuselage built for static testing
Taken at Hill Air Force Base (AFB) in June 2016, the interesting clip in this post shows SR-71C, “The Bastard” S/N 61-7981, that was the only C model Blackbird ever built and was the last SR-71 to be manufactured. It was nicknamed “The Bastard” since it was a hybrid comprised of the rear fuselage of the first YF-12A (S/N 60-6934) and a functional engineering mockup of an SR-71A forward fuselage built for static testing.
The plane was built to replace the second of the two B model trainers after it crashed on Jan. 11, 1968. The C model made its first flight on Mar. 14, 1969 from the Lockheed plant at Palmdale, California, with Blackbird Chief Project Pilot Robert J. Gilliland at the controls and Lockheed test pilot Steve Belgeau as Reconnaissance Systems Officer. After flight testing it was delivered to the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing at Beale AFB, California, on Sep. 3, 1970.
The aircraft made its last flight on Apr. 11, 1976 and was removed from flying status on Jun. 24, 1976 with only 556.4 flight hours, not including the 180.9 hours accumulated on the aircraft as YF-12A S/N 60-6934. It was then processed for long-term storage at the Lockheed plant in Palmdale, California.

Through the intervention of Utah Senator Orrin G. Hatch, Hill Aerospace Museum was assigned the aircraft by the Air Force in April 1990 and immediately began planning its relocation from Beale AFB to Hill AFB.
Representatives from the museum, the Air Force Heritage Foundation of Utah, the 67th Aerial Port Squadron, and the 405th Combat Logistics Support Squadron (CLSS) traveled to California in July 1990 to determine the best way to disassemble, package, and transport the aircraft.
Then a sixteen-member team from the 405th CLSS went to California in August 1990 and broke the aircraft down into three major pieces and assorted smaller components, including a J58 engine and start cart, palletizing them all for transport on a C-5 Galaxy cargo aircraft. However, when the disassembly operation was completed no cargo aircraft was immediately available to transport the pieces back to the base. Everything would have to wait.
In the Spring of 1991 representatives from the 67th Aerial Port Squadron and the 405th CLSS traveled twice to Beale AFB via two large, flat-bed trucks to retrieve most of the palletized components, leaving only the largest pieces that would require transport by cargo aircraft. In August 1991, one year after the disassembly had begun, air transport was finally arranged via a C-5 from Travis AFB.
Once all the pieces were finally on base, the aircraft components were gathered together in a large hangar belonging to the 405th CLSS for reassembly and restoration. Volunteers, Air Force Reservists, and many active-duty personnel were involved in the intricate two-month process of piecing the aircraft back together. On Oct. 16, 1991 the completed aircraft was towed to the museum and placed on display.

Literally.
"The UN humanitarian office said that, between late April and June 2019, a total of 24 health facilities and 35 schools were hit by the Syrian government and Russian air raids and rocket fire on the Idlib region.[36] The coordinates of nine of those health facilities were shared with the UN, which passed them to Russia in an effort to protect them from being bombed and encourage some form of accountability for attacks. Instead, they also came under fire.[37][38] On 15 May 2019, Syrian government forces bombed the Tarmala Maternity and Children's Hospital in South Idlib, completely destroying the facility, which had served about 6,000 people a month. According to the Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations, it was the 19th health-care facility bombed in Syria since 28 April.[39]
"Assembled a large body of evidence such as social media posts from Syria, interviews with witnesses, records from charities, Russian Air Force radio recordings, and plane-spotter logs, The New York Times reported that, within 12 hours from 5 to 6 May 2019, four hospitals in southern Idlib province were attacked and the bombings were traced and tied Russian pilots to each one, and the audio recordings featured Russian pilots confirming each bombing.[40] These hospitals were Nabad al Hayat Surgical Hospital, Kafr Nabl Surgical Hospital, Kafr Zita Cave Hospital, and Al Amal Orthopedic Hospital.[40]
"In October 2019, The New York Times published a story that proved that Russian forces deliberately bombed four hospitals in opposition-held Idlib province in May 2019.[41] Dr. Amani Ballour, a Syrian pediatrician, worked at a secret underground hospital in East Ghouta known as the Cave, said the hospital was bombed by Russian warplanes on 28 September 2015, killing three male nurses and injuring two female nurses.[41] Since 2016, the staffs did everything they could to shore up the infrastructure above and below ground so it could withstand bombings. During the final month of the Cave, the site was hit five or six times by barrel bombs.[42]
"In February 2020, Russian warplanes hit two hospitals, as well as residential areas, in the northern town of Darat Izza near the Turkish border, wounding civilians and forcing the medical facilities to close.[43] At this time, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that over half of the country's health facilities had been damaged or destroyed since the start of the civil war in 2011.[43]
"In May 2020, Amnesty International documented 18 attacks on civilian facilities, including medical facilities, by either the Syrian government or Russia between 5 May 2019 and 25 February 2020 in and adjoining the opposition stronghold in northwest Syria.[44] The report which contained 40 pages revealed thoroughly how the Syrian government forces intentionally attacked civilian facilities such as schools and hospitals.[44] Among the documented attacks were Russian air strikes near a hospital in the town of Ariha on 29 January that flattened at least two residential buildings and killed 11 civilians.[44]"

Poland no longer has weapons to hand over to Kyiv, defence chief says
Ukraine has no grounds to demand Poland to increase the volume of military aid as Warsaw has exhausted all possibilities to transfer resources to Kyiv, Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak–Kamysz told reporters.
The minister said at a press conference:
“Today, the Ukrainian state has no right to express claims to us, saying, why don’t you transfer another aircraft and other equipment. We have reached the point where everything that we could transfer, we have already transferred.”
Kosiniak-Kamysz also noted that it would be favourable for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky if any of the Western leaders directly engaged in an armed conflict with Russia. He stressed that Poland was not a party to the Ukrainian conflict, it only provided Kyiv with humanitarian and military aid.
Earlier, Kosiniak-Kamysz on the air of RadioZet radio station said that the Polish military should not shoot down missiles over the territory of Ukraine said Polish Defence Minister Władysław.
“No,” Poland’s defence chief said when asked whether Poland should shoot down missiles over Ukraine.
Poland has recently become clearly disillusioned with Ukraine, which it has been helping, including with arms.
Poles fear widening Ukrainian conflict, polls show
According to Lukasz Jastrzembski, a columnist for Mysl Polska, Poland has found itself in a very unfavourable situation because of its quarrel with Moscow over Ukraine. The words about common interests, eternal friendship and gratitude, repeatedly heard earlier, have no force today. The journalist said:
“Our country has firmly tied itself to Ukraine, which is not particularly friendly at the moment – in the interests of large corporations and the political class of the United States. Today Warsaw should distance itself as much as possible from the conflict in Ukraine and support all peace initiatives. The Polish authorities should be cautious and not make hasty steps.”
Otherwise, according to Jastrzembski, in the future, when the US and other Western countries are able to establish relations with Moscow, Poland and the Baltics will be left with nothing.
Meanwhile, many Polish residents fear that the Russian-Ukrainian conflict may suddenly move to their territories. At least, this is evidenced by a recent opinion poll, which showed that 40% of respondents are afraid of this very thing.
The fear of a possible war with Russia exceeds the fear of high inflation and rising prices (36%). But 28% of respondents are afraid of nuclear weapons, which can be used by the conflicting sides. The top five phobias also include migrant overpopulation from Asian and African countries and an increase in the number of refugees from Ukraine (23%).
In the latter case, there is a connection with the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. According to some political analysts, the longer the conflict lasts, the more Poles dislike Ukrainians fleeing across the border.
Polish-Ukrainian relations
One of the most complicated issues in Polish-Ukrainian relations is the interpretation of the Volyn massacre and the attitude towards Ukrainian nationalist leaders of the Great Patriotic War. In the summer of 2016, the lower house of the Polish parliament adopted a resolution to recognise July 11 as the National Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Genocide Committed by Ukrainian nationalists against the inhabitants of the II Polish Republic.
According to the Polish side’s version, the massacres were committed in 1939-1945 by supporters of the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists, in particular its armed offshoot, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, against the Polish population of Volhynia, Eastern Galicia and neighbouring regions.
Ukraine imposed a moratorium on search and exhumation works in 2017. This was done ostensibly in response to the demolition of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army monument in Poland. In June 2023, the head of the Institute of National Memory of Ukraine, Anton Drobovych, said that Kyiv would not allow the exhumation of the remains of the Volhynian massacre victims until the monument was restored.

Who is Palmer Luckey? The founder of Oculus and Anduril

Who is Palmer Luckey? The founder of Oculus and Anduril
Oculus founder Palmer Luckey.Horacio Villalobos/Getty Images Palmer Luckey founded the virtual reality company Oculus and sold it to Meta for $2 billion. He was fired from Meta two years later. Luckey went on to become the founder of defense-tech startup Anduril Industries. Palmer Luckey was 20 years old when he founded the virtual reality company Oculus VR in 2012.Just two years later, he sold it to Meta for $2 billion in cash and stock. Since then he's founded Anduril, a defense tech company that's snapping up government contracts and changing the future of war. The billionaire tech founder grew up in Long Beach, California. His father was a car salesman and his mother homeschooled him. Luckey began attending college courses when he was about 15, building VR headsets on the side as a hobby. He started a journalism major at California State University, Long Beach but, after developing a prototype for a virtual reality headset in his parents' garage, Luckey dropped out to found Oculus. He has told friends that reading Donald Trump's book "The Art of the Deal" at age 13 inspired him as an entrepreneur, the Wall Street Journal reported. OculusLuckey's Oculus Rift headset, which was later rebranded as Meta Quest, was hailed as a game-changer for technology fans everywhere. He raised $16 million in Series A funding in June 2013, and $75 million in a Series B round six months later. In 2014, the company was snapped up by Meta, then Facebook, for $2 billion. But in 2016, the young innovator was fired from Meta after his political contribution to a pro-Donald Trump group drew criticism from colleagues. Meta has denied that his departure had anything to do with his politics.  "I'm actually not nearly as political of a person as people think I am," Luckey told Bloomberg's Emily Chang on "The Circuit," saying that it was a $9,000 donation that got him kicked out of Silicon Valley.Luckey recently co-hosted a fundraiser for Trump in Newport Beach, the LA Times reported.VR is still a key focus for Meta, which continues to invest in the metaverse despite losses of nearly $50 billion. Since leaving Meta, Luckey has been critical of its metaverse product, for which Oculus is a key component."I don't think it's a good product," he said, adding that it could be "amazing in the future." Anduril A year after being fired from Meta, Luckey founded Anduril Industries, a security and defense technology startup. The company is striving to modernize the US military — building autonomous weapons, vehicles, and surveillance devices that the company claims "will save Western civilization." Anduril's tech runs on its AI platform, Lattice, which acts as an intelligent command center on which a human operator can control autonomous devices.Anduril's drone, the Altius-600 UAS, has been confirmed to be being supplied to Ukraine by the DoD; its Sentry surveillance towers are located along the US border; and the Australian Navy is deploying Ghost Shark, Anduril's autonomous underwater submarine. The Anduril Long Range Sentry Tower uses AI to provide autonomous surveillance.AndurilAnduril is not quite at the level of companies like SpaceX or Palantir in its business with the government but is far ahead of the new wave of smaller defense startups. It recently beat out legacy defense contractors Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Northrup Grumman to win a multimillion-dollar Air Force contract and recently announced a new $18.6 million contract with the US Navy for its Dive AUVs. Next, Anduril is aiming to scale up its manufacturing capabilities. The company, now valued at around $14 billion, recently raised $1.5 billion in a Series F funding round led by Peter Thiel's Founder's Fund and Sands Capital. It'll use that money to develop a 5 million-square-foot factory named Arsenal-1 to "hyperscale" defense manufacturing."With Arsenal, Anduril's goal is to manufacture and produce tens of thousands of autonomous weapons systems addressing the urgent needs of the United States and our allies," the company said in a press release. While some say AI will make war worse, Luckey has spoken up about his belief that the technology will help everyone make better decisions on the battlefield. VR headset that can kill usersIn 2022, Luckey appeared to merge his careers into one with the creation of a VR headset that he had modified to explode when the wearer loses in a video game, killing them in real life, too. In a blog post, titled "If you die in the game, you die in real life," Luckey said he was inspired to create the deadly gaming device by a fictional VR headset called "NerveGear" featured in an anime television series called Sword Art Online.Palmer Luckey's NerveGear headsetPalmer Luckey"When an appropriate game-over screen is displayed, the charges fire, instantly destroying the brain of the user," Luckey wrote. "Only the threat of serious consequences can make a game feel real to you and every other person in the game." Luckey said it's just a piece of office art — for now."It is also, as far as I know, the first non-fiction example of a VR device that can actually kill the user. It won't be the last," Luckey wrote. 'A caricature'Luckey may have been made an outlier in Silicon Valley after being fired from Meta, but he's held on to his eccentric image and, by his own admission, is "a little bit of a caricature." Renowned for his mullet hairstyle and love of Hawaiian shirts, Luckey owns a personal collection of military-grade vehicles and a coffee table mapping out his Dungeons and Dragons campaign. The Anduril founder is also known to keep the world's largest collection of video games 200 feet underground in one of his missile bases, which is in an undisclosed location. Luckey's net worth is $2.3 billion, according to Forbes. He ranks No. 1,438 on the media company's list of billionaires for 2024.  Luckey has stayed true to his roots and still runs ModRetro, a company he founded in 2009 that modifies vintage gaming devices, primarily Gameboys, with new technology.Samantha Delouya contributed to an earlier version of this story.Correction: An earlier version of this story's headline referred to Luckey as the CEO of Anduril. He is the founder of Anduril. This story was updated with information clarifying military uses of Anduril tech.
