At my old material handling position, conveyables were conveyed up and away to another sort. noncon got conveyed less than 50 feet to “noncon” reload.
So, con goes probably 200-300 feet, up, down, on a slide, gets moved to another slide, goes another 100 or so feet before it gets reloaded into a ULD (unit load device, we’re talking air freight here.)
Noncon is anything that can roll, has an irregular non-box shape, is wrapped in plastic (fucks everything up if it gets caught on something), is huge (likely to cause a jam by getting stuck), a document or soft bagged package other very small piece of mail (often valuable cargo/customer paid lots to ship and will be destroyed if it goes through the conveyor system.) Also things that appear very fragile (i once saw a shipment of LIVE FISH in bags of water that were packed in styrofoam. Found out they were fish because one of the boxes broke, but the bag stayed intact.) Anything weird that will be damaged or do damage to other packages goes in the noncon belt. Also Dangerous goods.
The noncon belt is wider and short and slow. And yes, I had a hell of a time keeping a straight face my first couple weeks, but after a while, it’s just a word.

Unit Load Device
A pallet or container used to load luggage, freight and mail on wide-body aircraft and specific narrow-body aircraft. It allows a large quantity of cargo to be bundled into a single unit. Since this leads to fewer units to load, it saves ground crews time and effort and helps prevent delayed flights. Each ULD has its own packing list (or manifest) so that its contents can be tracked.
ULDs come in two forms: pallets and containers. ULD pallets are rugged sheets of aluminum with rims designed to lock onto cargo net lugs. ULD containers, also known as cans and pods, are closed containers made of aluminum or combination of aluminum (frame) and Lexan (walls), which, depending on the nature of the goods to be transported, may have built-in refrigeration units.
All ULDs are identified by their ULD number. A three-letter prefix identifies its type and key characteristics, followed by a 4 or 5 digit serial number (4 if prior to October 1, 1993; either 4 or 5 if after October 1, 1993) to uniquely identify it from others of the same type, and ending with a two character (alpha-numerical) suffix identifying the ULD's owner (if an airline, often the same as IATA designator codes). For example, AKN 12345 DL means that the ULD is a forklift able LD3 with the unique number 12345 and its owner is Delta Air Lines.

GTR Opens Air Cargo Hub at KLIA Air Cargo Terminal 1

GTR (Ground Team Red), a joint venture between AirAsia and SATS, has launched its air cargo hub at the KLIA Air Cargo Terminal 1 (KACT1). Located at the former low-cost carrier terminal in Sepang, the facility spans 93,000 sq ft and was built at a cost of MYR 23 million. It adds additional storage to the existing 40,000 sq ft warehouse, and the combined facilities will handle 300,000 tons of air freight annually, strengthening Malaysia’s goal of being a regional logistic hub. The new air cargo hub enables GTR to expand its capabilities by handling both narrow and wide-body aircraft cargo operations and has motorised material handling system that facilitates efficient handling of Unit Load Devices (ULDs).

The new air cargo hub also has a purpose-built 10,000 square feet cold-chain facility for specialised handling for perishable and pharmaceutical products and dedicated zones for dangerous goods, pets and valuable cargo handling. Modern security cargo scanners offer both horizontal and vertical views of cargo to enhance detection. Malaysia's Minister of Transport, YB Loke Siew Fook, said, “I would like to congratulate GTR on the launch of their Air Cargo hub today, and their efforts to enhance airline ground handling operations in Malaysia. It is an impressive facility and will help to further elevate KLIA and klia2 as a key logistics gateway, in line with my Ministry’s National Logistics Masterplan to develop Malaysia as a logistics hub. Malaysia Aviation Group’s (MAG) cargo arm, MAB Kargo Sdn Bhd (MASkargo), hopes to achieve all those objectives while piloting this new solution. Before the quantum implementation, flight planners manually assigned shipments to ULDs, flying to any one of the nearly 100 destinations MASkargo services. In an extremely competitive industry with very little room for error, this puts MAG at a disadvantage by taking a significant amount of time and incurring high costs.
With the quantum-powered solution, flight planners will receive graphic cargo plans to maximize capacity, increase efficiency, and reduce costs. It will also enable the carrier to manage priority shipments better and enhance communication. Air freight là gì? Tìm hiểu một số thông tin phổ biến về Air freight
1. Lý giải nghĩa Air freight là gì trong Logistics?  Air freight – Vận tải hàng không Một trong những thuật ngữ thuộc lĩnh vực Logistics là Air freight – Vận tải hàng không. Đây là một phương thức vận chuyển hàng hóa thông qua một hãng hàng không, có thể là điều lệ hoặc thương mại.  Air freight – Vận tải hàng không, Road, Seaway là ba phương thức vận chuyển phổ biến trong ngành Logistics. Trong đó Air freight là một sự lựa chọn hiệu quả của nhiều doanh nghiệp khi có nhu cầu vận chuyển những loại hàng hóa đặc biệt.  Hàng hóa được lựa chọn vận chuyển theo đường hàng không là những loại hàng hóa cần chuyển trong thời gian gấp, mức độ an ninh cao khi đã được kiểm soát tại sân bay và quản lý tất cả hàng hóa đi vào và rời khỏi một số khu vực nhất định.  Air freight được lựa chọn để vận chuyển hàng hóa đặc biệt  Hàng hóa hàng không là bất kỳ tài sản nào được mang trong một chiếc máy bay. Đó thường là những loại hàng hóa có giá trị cao cần xử lý và quản lý đặc biệt. Một số loại hàng hóa hàng không có thể là sản phẩm của ngành dệt may, bán lẻ hoặc hàng tiêu dùng, máy móc, phần cứng và điện tử,... Ngoài ra vận tải hàng không nhất thiết là một phương thức vận chuyển hàng hóa mà đó còn là vận chuyển hành khách.  Air freight – Vận tải hàng không mặc dù chỉ được lựa chọn để vận chuyển một khối lượng hàng hóa rất nhỏ trong tổng khối lượng hàng hóa thương mại quốc tế nhưng lại là một phương thức vận tải rất quan trọng và đặc biệt phát triển mạnh mẽ trong nhiều năm gần đây.  Bên cạnh đó thì freight còn có nghĩa là “cước” vì vậy Air freight cũng có thêm một nghĩa nữa là các chi phí phải trả cho vận tải hàng không. Đây là số tiền phải trả khi sử dụng phương thức vận tải hàng không để vận chuyển hàng hóa từ nơi này sang nơi khác.  2. Ưu điểm và hạn chế khi lựa chọn hình thức Air freight để vận chuyển hàng hóa  2.1. Ưu điểm  Air freight – Vận tải hàng không giúp hàng hóa vận chuyển nhanh  Air freight – Vận tải hàng không luôn đứng ở vị trí hàng đầu trong quyết định lựa chọn phương thức vận chuyển các loại hàng hóa quý hiếm, giá trị cao, thời gian sử dụng ngăn, thư từ, tài liệu, hàng thời vụ, hàng chuyển khẩn cấp,… bởi thời gian vận chuyển nhanh, độ bảo mật cao. Theo đó, vận tải hàng không có tuyến đường đi gần như là đường thẳng, tốc độ vận chuyển được so sánh nhanh gấp gần 30 lần so với đường biển, 10 lần so với đường bộ khi vận chuyển bằng phương tiện ô tô và 8 lần so với đường tàu.  Ngoài ra, vận tải hàng không được đánh giá là phương thức vận chuyển an toàn nhất kể cả về an ninh hay tai nạn. Vì vậy mà  Air freight rất được ưu tiên khi vận chuyển những loại hàng hóa nêu trên. Một số loại hàng hóa cụ thể có thể kể đến như: Kim cương, đá quý, đồ trang sức, vàng, bạch kim, hàng cứu trợ khẩn cấp, hàng giá trị cao (từ 1000 USD/kg trở lên)  2.2. Hạn chế Air freight – Vận tải hàng không có giá cước cao  Bên cạnh tính hiệu quả từ những ưu điểm nêu trên, Air freight còn tồn tại một số hạn chế như:  - Giá cước cao hơn các phương thức vận chuyển khác vì vậy mà đây được xem là phương thức vận chuyển cao cấp. Theo tính toán, vận tải hàng không có mức phí cao hơn vận tải đường bộ bằng phương tiện ô tô và vận tải đường sắt từ 2 – 4 lần và cao hơn 8 lần so với vận tải bằng đường biển  - Vận tải hàng không hiệu quả nhưng chi phí vận chuyển đắt do đó không phải loại hàng hóa nào cũng phù hợp để vận chuyển nhất là đối với những loại hàng hóa cồng kênh chiếm nhiều diện tích trong khi phương tiện vận chuyển bằng đường hàng không là máy bay thì có diện tích giới hạn hay các loại hàng hóa giá trị thấp, khối lượng lớn cũng đều không phù hợp với phương thức vận chuyển này - Với những doanh nghiệp hoạt động trong lĩnh vực Logistics muốn mở rộng kinh doanh phục vụ nhiều loại hàng hóa có nhu cầu cung cấp dịch vụ vận tải hàng không - Air freight thì chắc chắn phải tiêu tốn một nguồn vốn xây dựng khá lớn để hoàn thành chỉ tiêu dự án  3. Những bộ phận liên quan khi thực hiện Air freight Những bộ phận hỗ trợ trong quá trình vận chuyển hàng hóa bằng đường hàng không  Cũng như các phương thức vận chuyển khác, vận tải hàng không - Air freight cũng cần có điểm xuất phát và điểm có thể dừng chân, phương tiện di chuyển, cơ sở vật chất phục vụ khi thực hiện các hoạt động với hàng hóa,… Dưới đây sẽ là những bộ phận liên quan cụ thể trong mỗi chuyến hàng được vận chuyển bằng đường hàng không:  - Cảng hàng không: Theo Luật Hàng không dân dụng Việt Nam là một tổ hợp vào gồm nhiều địa điểm khác nhau điển hình là sân bay, nhà ga và các trang thiết bị, công trình bên dưới mặt đất cần thiết hỗ trợ cho máy bay cất cánh và hạ cánh, thực hiện dịch vụ vận tải hàng không  - Phương tiện vận chuyển trực tiếp là máy bay được phân ra theo từ đối tượng vận chuyển hoặc kết hợp cùng vận chuyển. Cụ thể: + Máy bay chở hành khách: Được thiết kế có các khoang với nhiều ghế ngồi dành cho khách nhưng có thể kết hợp để chở hàng ở boong dưới có các khoang hàng  + Máy bay chở hàng: Loại máy bay này được thiết kế dành riêng cho chở hàng để trở những lô hàng lớn, kích thước cồng kềnh.  + Máy bay kết hợp: Là loại máy bay được thiết kế vừa có thể chở hàng và hành khách ở boong chính lại vừa có thể chở thêm hàng ở boong dưới  - Thiết bị phục vụ trong quá trình vận chuyển bao gồm: Xe vận chuyển các container, xe nâng hàng lên máy bay, thiết bị nâng container lên máy bay, băng chuyển hàng rời, giá đỡ,…  - Đơn vị xếp trên máy bay (ULD – Unit Load Device) là một bộ phận của máy bay chở hàng nhằm hỗ trợ trong việc xếp hàng lên, xuống máy bay dễ dàng, phù hợp với kích thước của khoang máy bay.  4. Air freight – Vận tải hàng không đối với những quốc gia không giáp biển  Air freight – Vận tải hàng không đối với những quốc gia không giáp biển  Hoạt động xuất nhập khẩu hàng hóa là một trong những hoạt động mang lại giá trị kinh tế cao bởi ngoài việc sản xuất tiêu thụ trong nước thì xuất khẩu hàng hóa sang thị trường quốc tế là mục tiêu kinh tế rất quan trọng của hầu hết mọi quốc gia trên thế giới. Nếu hàng hóa chỉ tiêu thị trong nước trong phạm vi địa lý bị giới hạn từ đó thị trường và người tiêu dùng cũng bị giới hạn theo đó dẫn tới việc kinh doanh không thể phát triển trong lâu dài. Nhưng khi tiếp cận được với thị trường nước ngoài, sản phẩm hàng hóa được tiêu thụ nhiều hơn, sản lượng sản xuất theo định kỳ cũng tăng lên kéo theo nhu cầu về lao động, từ đó gián tiếp tạo công ăn việc làm cho người lao động tại các quốc gia.  Trong hoạt động xuất nhập khẩu hàng hóa, các dịch vụ trong lĩnh vực logistics đóng góp một vai trò hết sức quan trọng. Đó là việc cung cấp các phương thức vận chuyển hàng hóa từ quốc gia này sang quốc gia khác một cách nhanh chóng và thuật tiện. Tùy theo đặc điểm của từng loại hàng hóa, vị trí địa lý từ nơi vận chuyển đến nơi nhận hàng mà có các phương thức vận chuyển phù hợp. Hiện tại có 4 phương thức vận tải phổ biến đó là vận tải đường bộ, vận tải đường sắt, vận tải đường biển, vận tải hàng không. Tuy nhiên ở đây chúng ta đang nhắc tới ý nghĩa của vận tải hàng không đối với những quốc gia không giáp biển. Mặc dù đây là phương thức rất hiệu quả để vận chuyển hàng hóa từ quốc gia này sang quốc gia khác khi không có đường biên nhưng khó khăn của các doanh nghiệp tại đây khi lựa chọn vận tải hàng không là chi phí cao và lượng hàng hóa chủ yếu cần vận chuyển chỉ là một lượng nhỏ, giá trị không quá cao.Đặc biệt với những nước đang phát triển, họ gặp phải vấn đề là làm sao để tạo ra đủ lưu lượng thu hút được các dịch vụ vận tải hàng không vừa thường xuyên vừa có giá cạnh tranh.  Air freight – Vận tải hàng không đối với quốc gia không giáp biển cũng khó có thể phát triển do một số hạn chế về chi phí Như đã tìm hiểu trên đây thì chi phí vận tải hàng không rất cao do giá nhiên liệu cao điều này đồng nghĩa rằng với những chuyến hàng nhỏ, giá trị thấp lợi nhuận không đủ bù đắp được chi phí. Đặc biệt khi giá nhiên liệu tăng giảm liên tục không có thời điểm cụ thể sẽ rất khó để các nước đang phát triển không giáp biển có thể tính toán được chi phí vận chuyển đối với những hợp đồng được ký kết trước một khoảng thời gian giá nhiên liệu tăng. Thêm vào đó, mức tiêu thụ nhiên liệu lại tỉ lệ thuận với trọng lượng máy bay và khoảng cách bay, chi phí cận biên để vận chuyển hàng hóa được tính dựa trên trọng lượng và điểm đến.  Như vậy có thể thấy Air freight – Vận tải hàng không đối với quốc gia đang phát triển không giáp biển cũng khó có thể phát triển do một số hạn chế về chi phí. Vì vậy trong vận chuyển hàng hóa xuất khẩu các nước này vẫn gặp những khó khăn nhất định gây cản trở khá lớn để hoàn thành mục tiêu phát triển kinh tế.
