It was martial law, and soldiers shot and killed many young Tausug men in Jolo on mere suspicion of being rebels, [Amroussi “Cheng” Rasul, a grandson of the late Hadji Butu, the first Muslim Filipino senator] recalled. Among them, he said, was his classmate, Alfred Chang.
Rasul’s grim memory harked back to the government’s military crackdown on the historic town, as it sought to suppress the uprising of the Nur Misuari-led Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), then a new group that emerged to challenge the martial law imposed by the late strongman Ferdinand E. Marcos more than a year earlier and started the struggle for Moro independence.
Five decades later, the events of the February 4-11, 1974 siege in Jolo remain largely forgotten, and neither the local governments nor the National Commission for Muslim Filipinos (MCMF) has arranged commemorative activities for what has been dubbed the “Jolo-caust.”
The Battle of Jolo, also called The Burning of Jolo, was a significant but often overlooked event in the country’s history in that it was the strongest resistance against the martial regime of Marcos at that time, said retired judge Soliman Santos Jr. during the live-streamed “The Siege of Jolo 1974” forum at the University of the Philippines in Quezon City on Monday, February 12.
At the same time, the event signaled the beginning of a growing movement for Mindanao independence, according to Santos, author of the book The Moro Islamic Challenge: Constitutional Rethinking for the Mindanao Peace Process.
As the military fought against MNLF forces, intense battles spread throughout the city. Military ships bombarded the pier, a gas station exploded, and napalm bombs were used. After days of fighting, the military regained control, but about two-thirds of the Jolo burned to the ground and lay in ruins.
Amina Rasul, lead convenor of the Philippine Center for Islam and Democracy (PCID), said it was a “devastating blow to the fabric of Tausug and Jolo society resulting in immeasurable human suffering, economic hardships, and destruction of our political structure… and represented a very painful part of our history.”
“People in Manila think we were always poor. No, we were very well off even though we were neglected by the government,” she said.
“Because of the complete destruction… the money that made Jolo relatively rich went to enrich Zamboanga, General Santos, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Manila… And because there was capital flight and the destruction of infrastructure, the best and brightest had to leave because there were no opportunities and they had to support their families,” she said.
The Marcos administration then, concerned about possible consequences from oil-producing Muslim nations, took steps to address the humanitarian impact in the predominantly Muslim province. It established a government task force to lead Jolo’s recovery, which included actions like stopping loan repayments to banks, providing significant loans to residents, and pausing tax collection temporarily.
Elgin Salomon, an assistant history professor at UP-Visayas in Iloilo, said the government then initially concealed the situation in Jolo and later framed the narrative that it was fighting “Maoist rebels” in Jolo through its controlled media.
The MNLF subsequently abandoned its pursuit of independence and forged a peace agreement with the Ramos administration in the 1990s. The accord led to the establishment of the now-defunct Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), the precursor to the current and expanded Bangsamoro region.
Five decades later, what lingers is a sense of nostalgia, with many survivors still longing to witness the return of Jolo’s former glory, said Agnes Shari Tan Aliman, a survivor and author of the book The Siege of Jolo, 1974.

MALLARI (2023) - MMFF REVIEW

“‘Di ba’t isang sumpa ang magmahal?”
Mallari does not only showcase the story of the infamous Fr. Severino Mallari, but also delves into the lives of men from succeeding generations of his clan. The first descendant, Johnrey, a documentary filmmaker in post World War II Philippines, and the second being Jonathan De Dios, a doctor and the lead protagonist of the film. The two descendants of Fr. Severino try to discover their family’s darkest secret, which most likely has contributed to the killings and disappearances in Magalang, Pampanga.
All three generations of the Mallari clan are played by Piolo Pascual, which is perceived to be difficult parts to play. However, Pascual was able to to help distinguish one generation from another and yet was able to establish the connection between all three characters.
What also is depicted in the movie is the presence of important female figures in each of the Mallari men’s lives: Dona Facunda, Fr. Severino’s mother played by Ms. Gloria Diaz, Felicity, Johnrey’s wife played by Elisse Joson, and Agnes, Jonathan’s fiancee played by Janella Salvador. All three actresses gave the three women their respective well-defined characters which was able to show how each Mallari’s love for these women had urged them to take greater lengths, even if it will cost them their own morals.
JC Santos does an excellent job in portraying Brother Lucas in the likeness of Brutus from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, as he showcases his character’s loyalty and later betrayal to Pascual’s Dr. Jonathan.
The film may remind one of Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All (2022) with its presence of common themes such as gore and manslaughter. It is also important to note how both Carido and Guadagnino have commonly used manslaughter as a dark metaphor for love as a motive of sacrifice and self-discovery, which the former has executed very well and evidently in Mallari (2023). It also bears similarities with Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho (2021) not just with the presence of gore and manslaughter, but also with the key theme of time travel, which the two Mallari descendants have used in order to learn about the dark secret of their family for this film.
The film had a well-organized flow of events, as well as a smooth transition in between time periods. It was able to give me and other viewers proper context and a good idea on how to let the story unfold and think about what could happen next. However, Jonathan’s arc was very anti-climactic towards the end yet it established his arc as an anti-hero.
Another thing to love about this film is that not only did it have Gothic themes and the use of the Catholic faith, which are associated as Western literary and cultural elements, but it also incorporated the use of Filipino folk medicine and faith healing, which are indigenous Filipino cultural elements, as important parts of the film.
In conclusion, Mallari (2023) was a great watch, and it definitely deserved the accolades. Not only did it bring justice to a dark love metaphor, but it also presented and promoted Filipino culture through folk medicine as key horror elements. It is a must watch for traditional Filipino horror movie buffs and those in need of a fresh face to Filipino horror films.

[A.M. No. 10-1-06-RTC : January 12, 2010]
RE: PETITION FOR CHANGE OF TRIAL VENUE OF CRIMINAL CASE NO. SA-198, PEOPLE V. DATA ANDAL AMPATUAN, SR., ET AL. FOR REBELLION FROM THE REGIONAL TRIAL COURT OF COTABATO CITY TO THE REGIONAL TRIAL COURT OF QUEZON CITY.
Sec. 5 (4), Art. VIII of the Constitution of the Philippines Section 5(4) of Article VIII of the 1987 Constitution of the Philippines states that the Supreme Court can order a change of venue or place of trial to avoid a miscarriage of justice. The Supreme Court also has other powers and responsibilities, including: Administrative supervision The Supreme Court has administrative supervision over all courts and their personnel. Rule promulgation The Supreme Court can promulgate rules for the protection and enforcement of constitutional rights, as well as for the practice and procedure in all courts. Appointment of officials The Supreme Court appoints all officials and employees of the Judiciary in accordance with the Civil Service Law. Judicial power The Supreme Court is vested with judicial power, along with such lower courts as may be provided by law.
Sirs/Mesdames:
Quoted hereunder, for your information, is a resolution of the Court En Banc dated January 12, 2010
"A.M. No. 10-1-06-RTC (Re: Petition for Change of Trial Venue of Criminal Case No. SA-198, People v. Data Andal Ampatuan, Sr., et al. for Rebellion from the Regional Trial Court of Cotabato City to the Regional Trial Court of Quezon City.)
For consideration of the Court are the following:
1. Letter dated December 23, 2009 of Acting Secretary Agnes VST Devanadera, Department of Justice, requesting for transfer of venue of Criminal Case No. SA-198, entitled "People of the Philippines v. Data Andal Ampatuan, Sr., et al.," for rebellion from the Regional Trial Court of Cotabato City to the Regional Trial Court of Quezon City, citing the following as grounds therefor:
a. The events occurring in the aftermath of the Maguindanao Massacre reinforce the notion that the Philippines is now the most dangerous place for journalists;
b. This is considered by media organizations as a flagship case because of the interest it has generated in the local and international press due to the perceived clout of the suspects who belong to very influential and powerful political clans that virtually rule Maguindanao as its fiefdom;
c. Although a panel of prosecutors composed of city, provincial and state prosecutors has been formed to prosecute this case, witnesses remain reluctant to fully disclose what they
know if the case will be tried in the very heart of the accused's territory; and
d. These factors do not instill confidence in the mind of potential witnesses, court personnel and complainants that their security will not be compromised if trial is held in Maguindanao.
2. Letter dated January 4, 2010 of Atty. Philip Sigfrid A. Fortun of Fortun Narvasa & Salazar Law Offices, counsel for the accused, opposing the request for change of venue arguing that it will be practical and protective of the accused's right to due process if venue be maintained in Mindanao for accessibility to the courts and convenience to those charged. He thus requests that venue be maintained in Cotabato City or any other appropriate place in Mindanao, such as Davao City or General Santos City. Paragraph 4, Section 5, Article VIII of the Constitution provides that the Court may order a change of venue or place of trial to avoid a miscarriage of justice.
The purpose of the provision is to ferret out the truth from the opposing claims of the parties in a controversy by means of a fair and impartial inquiry. Consequently, where there are serious and weighty reasons present that would prevent the court of original jurisdiction from conducting a fair and impartial trial, this Court has been mandated to order a change of venue so as to prevent a miscarriage of justice.[1] Among the reasons sufficient to justify a change of venue is the reluctance of witnesses to testify-out of fear for their personal security. Corrolarily, a hostile sentiment against the accused at the place of the trial, giving rise to the possibility that his life could be placed in clanger, is sufficient and justifiable cause to order a change of venue of the trial.[2] In view of the foregoing considerations and the proximity of Camp Crame to the Regional Trial Court of Quezon City, the Court deems it best that the hearing of the case be lodged before the Regional Trial Court of Quezon City provided that the proceedings be conducted in an appropriate place in Camp Crame, with adequate equipment and facilities sufficient to accommodate the court personnel, counsels of
the parties and the parties and witnesses to ensure the safety and security of the Presiding judge, the court personnel and the parties and their counsels and witnesses.
CONSIDERING THE FOREGOING, the Court RESOLVES to:
1. NOTE and GRANT the Letter dated December 23, 2009 of Acting Secretary Agnes VST Devanadera, Department of Justice;
2. NOTE the Letter dated January 4, 2010 of Atty. Philip Sigfrid A. Fortun of Fortun Narvasa & Salazar Law - Offices, counsel for the accused;
3. DIRECT the Executive Judge of the Regional Trial Court of Cotabato City to IMMEDIATELY FORWARD the records of the case to the Executive Judge of the Regional Trial Court of Quezon City;
4. DIRECT the Executive Judge of the Regional Trial Court of Quezon City to IMMEDIATELY RAFFLE the case to a branch thereat and COORDINATE with the authorities of Camp Crame for the proper conduct of trial in an appropriate place in Camp Crame sufficient to accommodate the court personnel, counsels of the parties, the parties and then-witnesses; and
5. DIRECT the judge to whom the case is raffled to try and hear Criminal Case No. SA-198 with dispatch; and
6. DIRECT the Office of the Court Administrator to ensure the proper implementation of this Resolution."
Very truly yours,
(Sgd.) MA. LUISA D. VILLARAMA
Clerk of Court

FunI never had something that I truly enjoy and I can say fun. Watching porn is bad. For the past 34 years, I never had male bestfriends and playing with other kids can really be counted. I was always alone at home. Watching porn reenacts my play with our relative when I was a kid and the light feeling and thrill it gives and signify male bonding. I do not want to be gay or be called gay. I am straight. I never watched porn with female individuals and never jerked-offed on in. I always thought that by this way, I can be different as those watching porn as how it was a pattern of this world. I am unique. Many does not accept my habit maybe even by my family but this is how I grew. I will be always alone at home and I always wish I had a sibling. I have lots of girl cousins and it contributed to me not watching porn because I was the eldest and I was always shy and it might also affect how I interact with them. Maybe if the play with my relative did not happen, I might not be fixated on gay porn. I was now 34 years old and I want to break my habit of watching gay porn. I always thought that I was still a kid but my curiousity and habit became an addiction. I do not want to see myself still watching porn at my 35 years of age or 40's. Yes, it cures my depression but I was not productive. If only I had friends.
Maybe there are no more than 20 times that I remembered myself playing with my relatives.
I have insecurity with my appearance. Maybe a body dysmorphia coupled with my family not accepting me, my social anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, homosexual obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression.
For me, it is just fun looking at others boys the same age as me because I have no friends and growing up, I studied for more than 30 years and I was always at home and do not see other faces aside from my family.
I have no friends to back me up or support me. I have no one to call when I need help. I never had friends and I did not know if those people at the places that I went to can be trusted.
No one understands me even my family about what happened to my Tito John. What happened to Tito John was premeditated and planned because the neighbors always murmur around the subdivision and even told their plan of killing Tito John. I barely remember if it was 1996 or 1998. I do not know that the fight in the subdivision is too grave that it lead to their killing of my Tito John. I want justice.
I only knew few people and places where they murmured against us regarding Tito John in 1996 / 1998 and that includes in front of the vacant lot that have "Santos" as their surname. I doubt some of the surnames because I learned that we have the same surnames and the enemies might be copying our surnames. Ocampo, Cathy and Baby Reyes are also our enemies. Some of the neighbors that I know are Martin, Hipolito, Nestor, Tonette, Bai Ramoso, Morena, Julie, Estrel, De Leon, the two Yollys, Agnes, Santiago, Antonio, Cabunyag, Abon, Nimfa, Francisco, Donato, Cesar, Morales. We never had friends in our subdivisions and thinking now that my family introduced those names as a caution and warning. Some of these names murmured against us already and they are suspected already.
What I am thinking about these people being relative might be real. We never said that Menchie Hipolito is a suspect in the 1999 crime. My family maybe even did not know. I just remember their faces and names because I always pass them by in the streets. She just uttered about their legal case and maybe she blurted customs just to mock us and maybe she is one of those who did not pay our family. She is also made "barat" regarding the prosthesis even she knew about the condition of our family and the 1999. Sa sobrang guilty ni Menchie Hipolito nasabi niya yung 1999 or about legal case that she should not have said because I might never learned about that information. Guilty.
I have plans of studying Law too when I was in 3rd year High School to protect my family and have justice regarding 1999 and what happened to my Papa Hen in 2006. The enemies knew my capability even in politics and that is why they attacked me at school or around the neighborhood. I am a threat even when I was just 3 years old because I do not know why Pasia Torres knew about me that she had me checked-up at their clinic by first escorting me out of the school premises to their place without the consent of my parents. I do not know if they have any knowledge about kidnapping laws and medical malpractice regarding lack of consent but I was not with my parents the first time Pasia Torres and Gina checked me up and kept that informtion until College and I do not know if my parents know about what the school did. I think that even at 18 or while studying that the school have no right of checking up the health of the students without their parents.
Lord's Shepherds Academy is a Christian school and I only learned that they are Born-again when I was in Grade 3 and I am angry at them because they have gay teachers like Roland Senense and Cocoy Paguio and they just let them teach whatever them and Vida Bernal, Vette Alday and Melba V. want. As a kid, I have no wisdom yet as what to believe even what I am doing might be wrong and have no knowledge of it, I also never had a habit of letting my parents know about the misdeeds and maltreatment or child abuse of the school because I was a kid. I want to sue everyone in Centro Escolar University and Lord's Shepherds Academy because they leave me defenseless and my whole life fucked-up.
I strongly believe that Lord's Shepherds Academy and Centro Escolar University is related to the 1999 crime and I also associate them to local TV GMA and ABS-CBN.

Agnes siguió en silencio al santo y a Hazel. El lugar al que llegamos era un pequeño jardín desierto. “¿A dónde vas?
