I don't truly experience anything

- a poem of some sort, I suppose

aromantic - I've never felt this thing that others say define us as human.

this feeling that in media seems to be the one feature that qualifies an alien or a robot as owning a soul

this one feeling that everyone seems so obsessed over

the thing behind the curtains of everything

the thing that surely, no one could ever live without, right?

I've never been with a person, thinking about how I'd love to spend the rest of my life with them and them alone

I've thought I might have, several times, with my closest friends, the ones I feel comfortable around

but it's not the same

it's not how others describe it

I've never wanted to kiss anyone

the closest I've come to romantic love is platonic

but if it is

if it turns out I'm pan- and polyromantic

if I've only ever experienced romantic love, and never platonic

then I'm still one form of love short from everyone else

I'm still less

asexual - I've never wanted intimacy the way others seem to.

I've never seen a person and felt anything like what people have described

I've never been able picture myself in a sexual setting, and I've certainly never enjoyed it when I've tried

I've never experienced an orgasm, not even sure I could if I tried

I've never felt the need to do anything of the sort

I've felt the want to, sure, but even then, not really

because I've never wanted it for it, I've wanted it to feel included

I've wanted to know what everyone else seem to revolve their life around

I wanted to understand, and to stop being so alien to the people around me whenever I just don't understand something

really, it just doesn't make any sense to me

never has, and tbh I just thought we'd all agreed to just go with it, because that's what everyone else did

I have yet to understand what this "feeling" is supposed to feel like

and I guess it's keeping me alive, so I'll try not to damage it too much

but it has never really meant any more than that in any way that means anything

it's a house

and you can decorate it to your choosing

and sometimes you'd like to move, but then you look at the housing market at the moment and decide that actually

the house I have now isn't that bad

and of course, you can't tear down a load bearing wall, the whole house would collapse

but otherwise, do whatever you want with what you've got, and you'll be good.

I guess in that sense I've kind of seen trans people as claustrophobic people stuck in a small attic-appartment without windows

the housing market is still horrible, and so they start by making modifications

let the air in

maybe even make a terrace on the roof out the window

doing what make them feel better

and if that so means I'll have to stop calling their house and attic, because they've expanded so much it's really a proper house now, then sure, I'll change the mailing address, why not?

agnostic - I say agnostic, but really I'm just afraid to say atheist

because I've never been able to believe

I don't even think I've ever really grasped the concept properly

but I want to

I really really do

I want to believe that there's some higher power out there

that there's someone looking out for us

taking care of us

I so badly want that comfort that others seem to get from talking into the void and somehow still feeling heard

but I don't know how

belief is such an amazing thing

belief is unconditional trust, something I'd almost call stronger than unconditional love

it's trusting that someone else will do good without any guarantee beforehand

and yet even when it comes to my closest friends, I can't do it

because I only actually believe in them if I've seen proof of it before, and that's not belief, it's a conditional trust

and I'm so incredibly jealous of the ones who are able to do so

I wish I was religious

Commonality between gender and religion

In the same way that I was brought up as a certain gender, I was brought up in a culture that is steeped in the history of christianity. It has imposed its history and theology on me, though their power is waning. The traditions and ways of thinking linger.

In the same way I don't believe in god - I recognise that there is a nebulous societal understanding of what "god" is, though no-one can come up with a coherent description or set of traits for god - I also don't believe in gender.

Gender, the concept of "man" and "woman", these are concepts being imposed over physical reality that don't - in themselves - have any physical meaning.

If someone tells me that they believe in a particular god - I don't really know what that means.

If someone tells me they are a particular gender - I don't really know what that means.

This could be a failure of understanding on my part. In any case, if someone tells me that they are a man, or a woman, or a christian, or a jew - that's fine. So long as you aren't using some internal logic to oppress or harm others as a consequence, then there's no harm in these flights of fancy - and I know how much it means to belong to a group of people who see the world like you do.

I wonder if any other asexual, agender or atheist folk resonate with this.

I've been seeing a lot of discourse about the Murderbot casting, to the tune of "Wells says she imagined it as brown"/"the narrator of the audiobook is a man"/"the writing just sounds female, the types of things it notices and cares to mention and the way it puts its sentences together is how a woman would"/"it's canonically agender wtf"/"agender people can look masculine you asshole"/"it's supposed to look big and average that means white male"/"that's your own cultural bias in play and evidence says the average in its universe is brown"/"that's your bias in play there's no ironclad indication what the average is in the Corporation Rim"/"here's every single canon description of Murderbot it has no canon physical attributes other than Tall it could be played by literally anyone Checkmate Atheists" etc etc etc and it all just... misses the point?

No one is annoyed with Skarsgård!MB because "white dude" isn't canon.

They're annoyed because written Murderbot presents a level of identification and recognition for them that "white dude" does not.

Or, in other words: it is difficult to imagine a level of abuse more profound than not having the freedom of your own literal thoughts, consigned to a cripplingly limited and cruel social role from which any deviation is met with brutal pain. And it is all too easy to imagine a demographic who are presumed violent, hostile, and inferior, good only for labor and violence, who must be controlled and denied and unpersoned for the good of the rest. The lines aren't hard to draw, here; Murderbot is deeply relatable to many people who are not (visibly masculine) white men, specifically because they are not (visibly masculine) white men. Because they share with it the experience of oppression, marginalization, and being known on sight as wrong, being punished for the slightest deviance. Because it is not just another in the long boring line of ten thousand thousand grizzled white space marine heroman types; it is the thematic opposite of that.

And yeah duh obviously you can look like a boilerplate white dude and still suffer plenty of oppression, but film is a visual medium. Character design is a crucial part of its language, especially when a specific character is the only example of its type available to the audience. It is a shorthand that the audience will understand as a reflection on the wider setting. Which means that casting Skarsgård is, whether they meant it or not, a subtle statement that the ultimate bigotry in Murderbot's universe is against and about conventional white dudes.

Or in other other words, you cannot refute complaints about Skarsgård!MB with ~canon~ because canon has nothing to do with it. It's a thematic inconsistency, a failure to understand the not the story's text, but its subtext and its place in the wider cultural conversation of sci-fi (or at least to accurately translate those meta considerations to the satisfaction of a decent segment of the audience).

Like you can still yell about how bullshit you think that is if you want. Casting's not that deep or it's an important queer metaphor to pass and still struggle or people have no inherent 'right' to representation or whatever else. I'm not telling anyone what to say or believe. But just understand that that's what you're actually arguing with (or for, for that matter), is all I'm saying.

But as far as I've heard cultures that make AFABs wear hijabs are usually very closed off the gender nonconformity. Again, I know nothing about your origin or where you come from. yupp, u right actually im very deep in the closet irl (only two ppl know abt me being queer)

and tbh, abt the hijab its just I'm used to wearing it since I was 8 so I just cant imagine not wearing it now, I just feel naked without it

and ofc, people are very closed off to gender nonconformity around me, putting everyone in boxes of male and female, despite the book saying genders is nonbinary (this would be a whole religious discussion tbh, with how jinns/angel/etc are very fluid/agender)

im from Indonesia where its very very conservative here, so- yeah. you're not even allowed to be atheist by law, you have to choose one religion for your id

even thoo- there are native beliefs not seeing gender as binary like Bugis (I'm not well educated about the tribe so I cant explain more)

anyway- about gender, yes. I've always known I don't fall into any of the two ever since I was very little. like, I remember when I was in 1st grade of elementary, we were told to fill this form, and I thought long to myself whether should i check on the F or M box, since neither feels right

I grew up not feminine in the first place, my mom got frustrated one time and got me into dancing class. But then the instructor gave me a male role as my first performance (my mom was so mad lolol)

My dad was more supportive in a way he let me choose what toys I wanna buy, what clothes I wanna wear, compared to my mom. Like at school, I used to not want to wear skirt, I just don't like the label it put on me so I wore pants underneath

There's also a thing about what sex I was born with, my mom liked to tell me multiple times that the radiology result of me in her belly was male (probably due to the tech at that time not as advanced, but idk for sure) so they prepared male names, male clothes, etc etc, only for me to be.. not exactly a male. And then there was this topic she mentioned, about me going into surgery to 'fix' the sex at only a few months old, but idk much abt it, and tbh its tmi so I'm not gonna say it here lol

By appearance also, i never rly care tbh, I just wear what I feel like wearing, and atm I don't care abt what my outfit labels me as. i don't think ppl could determine anyone's gender based on whether they wear dresses or pants anyway, including headscarves

Buttt.. rly, by outfit or what anyone was born with, it doesn't make anyone less valid to not want to be perceived as anything.
