A map illustrating Christopher Columbus’s image of the world before his first voyage in 1492. It was based on a map by the Italian scholar Paolo dal Pozzo Toscanelli, which depicted the Earth as about 25% smaller than it actually is, exaggerated the reach of Asia to the east, and ignored the (correct) measurements of Eratosthenes from some 1700 years earlier. Columbus compounded these errors with...

In 1497, Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama embarked on a historic voyage from Portugal to India, successfully opening a new sea route that significantly impacted global trade. He set sail from Lisbon on July 8, 1497, and rounded the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa. By May 1498, he had reached Calicut (now Kozhikode) on the southwestern coast of India. This sea route allowed for direct maritime trade between Europe and Asia, bypassing the overland routes that were dominated by Middle Eastern traders, and marked the beginning of a new era in global commerce and exploration.

“I shall satiate my ardent curiosity with the sight of a part of the world never before visited, and may tread a land never before imprinted by the foot of man” Captain Robert Walton In 1985 on Livingstone Island off the Antarctic Peninsula, one of the remotest and extreme locations on the planet, a human skull and a femur were discovered by a team of researchers from Chile. Thinking that the bones were recent they analyzed them and discovered that they had lain at the site they were found for over two hundred years. They were astounded, the island was first sighted on the 19th February 1819 by English mariner William Smith, with the continent itself postulated by Captain James Cook, and later confirmed in 1820 by the Russian expedition of Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev; part of an international race, not unlike the space race between Britain and Russia, to lay claim to the discovery of the last unknown parts of the globe. Further analyzing the bones, the researchers were able to claim that they had lain at the site since between 1819 and 1825. Another mystery also presented itself, not only were the bones of the first person to ever set foot on the island, twenty years before Antarctic land was confirmed, simultaneously in January 1840 by the United States Exploring Expedition, under Charles Wilkes, and a separate French expedition under Jules Dumont d'Urville; they also belonged to a woman. Further, both expeditions never actually set foot on the land they sighted, this would not occur until an Norwegian expedition in 1895. Therefore this unknown woman set foot on land in the continent of Antarctica some seventy years (continued in the comments). #antartica #19thcentury #19thcenturyhistory #regencygothic #thesublime #ageofdiscovery #artic #articexpedition #maryshelley #maryshelleyfrankenstein #maryshelleysfrankenstein #frankensteinsmonster #drfrankenstein #thursdaytales #darkromantic #darkromanticism #historymystery #gothicfiction #classicliterature #classicliteraturequotes #gothichistory #gothictales #historystory #historicalstories #darkhistory #historicaltales #deadwriters #livingstoneisland #antarctica #southpole https://www.instagram.com/p/CSevobbnnKa/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Extraordinary Journey of David Ingram: An Elizabethan Sailor in Native North America
In the Battle of San Juan de Ulúa in September 1568 near present-day Veracruz, Mexico, the privateer John Hawkins' ships were badly damaged by the Spanish navy. Marooned by the enemy, around 100 of Hawkins' seamen believed they could not sail back to England and went on land to find a friendly settlement. Amongst these 100 seamen were David Ingram, Richard Browne, and Richard Twide. Eleven months later, the three would be picked up by a French ship in Nova Scotia, after having walked for around 5,800 kilometers across North America. The truthfulness of this long walk, however, has been debated ever since it was made public in 1582 after David Ingram's testimony.

NEW MAP: North America 1517: Spanish–Mesoamerican contact (04 Mar 1517) https://buff.ly/32IRwU5 Despite almost 25 years of Spanish colonial expansion in the Caribbean, open contact between the Spanish and the civilizations of Mesoamerica did not occur until 1517, when an expedition under Francisco Hernández de Córdoba encountered Maya boats off the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. Clashes broke out almost immediately and, after a difficult and violent month of exploration, Hernández limped back to Cuba, dying soon after. Even so, the news he brought back of wealthy and sophisticated Maya kingdoms roused excitement among the Spanish colonies. #16thcentury #1517 #americanhistory #cartography #ageofdiscovery #ekab #exploration #gulfofmexico #mayans #historian #historic #historicalplace #historybuff #historyteacher #instahistory #map #mapping #maps #march #march4 #maya #mexicanhistory #mexico #mayan #northamerica #oldmaps #spanishempire #spain #yucatan #newmap (at Isla Mujeres) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9Q09WegAMs/?igshid=1t9cme9gbzons

#day10 #HappyMothersDay! This is an ode to the ultimate mother: our #earth, our #blood (yes you @littlehag), our #heritage, time from the start. I’m sure others feel like the #AgeofDiscovery is bygone, and that an essential innocence to life is missing... we know so much now, and we know so much glory and so much struggle. What if we could start it again? What if there was no fear of ending because nothing had started yet? #History. The chance to #rewritehistory. To be #gaia herself... or at least her first friend. And harvest our human chronicles from the dirt... That was what this one was about. I’ll let it write itself now. 😎📝 #poetsofinstagram #musiciansofinstagram #writersofinstagram #earthwindandfire #fireandrain #birthinreverse #startagain #genesis #revelation https://www.instagram.com/p/CABVuCWgIdf/?igshid=or1iisu877l6
