BEN HARDY (1921-1994)
Custom motorcycle builder Ben Hardy was born Benjamin F. Hardy on July 25, 1921, in Los Angeles, California. However, historical data regarding his family, upbringing, and obituary have yet to be recovered from the annals of time.
After World War II, as the United States experienced a slight depression with high unemployment, and California had an unemployment rate of 8.8% compared to a national average of 3.9% in 1946, Hardy established Hardy’s Motorcycle Service shop in South Central Los Angeles, located at 1168 E. Florence Avenue. He built two ‘Billy’ bikes and three’ Captain Americas,’ made at that time from a 20-year-old, heavily customized Harley-Davidson Panhead, with the assistance of another Black motorcycle builder, Cliff Vaughn, the most famous motorcycles ever made.
Los Angeles, California, was a city divided and segregated along racial lines, and it did not welcome Hardy and his creation into the mainstream motorcycle world. However, Hardy and Black motorcyclists continued riding the typical ‘Billy’ bike in their limited circle. In the 1950s, during the high point of Jim Crow, some viewed the camaraderie of riding a customized Harley chopper creatively in a group as a revolutionary act.
In 1969, Hardy’s chopper was showcased in the iconic 1969 motorcycle film Easy Rider, in which two bikers travel through the Southwest and South of the U.S. with lots of money from a cocaine deal. His bikes were duplicated for this movie if mechanical failure or wreckage during film shortage were anticipated. The film Easy Rider brought in more than $60 million; however, Hardy was inadequately recognized and did not benefit financially from the movie’s success.
In 2014, 20 years after the death of Hardy, the Captain America bike sold for $1.35 million. Four years later, in 2018, Hardy’s work was featured in the “Black Chrome” at the California African American Museum. This exhibit, sponsored by the Automobile Club of Southern California, the most prominent member of the AAA Federation of Motor Clubs, was about the historical development of African American motorcycle culture. A replica of Hardy’s Captain America bike is housed in one of Germany’s largest motorcycle collections at the German Two-Wheeler and NSU Museum in northern Baden-Württemberg.
Ben Hardy died in 1994. He was 74.

how did abeke take care of her braids when the team was on a mission is what i want to know
#i'm sure she normally had her hair braided by niloan greencloaks from her tribe#(which! would have been nice to see or hear about at some point since hair braiding was a time of community for ancient africans)#but what about when that wasn't possible? was she talented enough to do them on herself?#maybe tarik was able to do them for her?? but then they're from different regions of nilo so he wouldn't know her tribe's style#how long was she leaving her braids in? hopefully not too long...#did she ever take breaks from protective styles? she's never mentioned to be going around with her hair down... which is mildly concerning#you gotta let that hair breathe#how did she protect her braids at night when they were sleeping on the cold hard ground?#she must have had a silk scarf that she used to wrap them#but since they don't mention any of that are we to assume her braids were super frizzy all the time?#was she bringing shea butter with her on quests to moisturize her hair? i hope so#goodness girl spill your secrets how are those braids always looking perfect when you're fighting for your life#i'm so concerned for the niloan characters' hair bc we're never shown them taking proper care of it#which was either the predominantly white writing team not knowing how those styles work#or them going “we only have 200 pages each book who gaf ab their hair”#ME! as a niloan i gaf.#text#spirit animals#spirit animals books#spirit animals series#abeke#tarik

Me, dangling a fic carrot in front of my brain so I might (might) daydream it into fruition: what if Adam and Wellesley, hanging out in the early 70s shooting the shit re: PTSD management techniques and also the best way to blow up the side of a mountain.*
*Bran has to repeatedly stress that these are two seperate and entirely distinct categories of activity, please, do not blow up my territory.
#what if I actually did the research I need to do to convincingly write a pair of unhinged veterans#also why did Bran rename him Wellesley? was he at Waterloo? do he and Tag get into fights about it?#my special reader talent is noticing art whenever it’s mentioned in books#and Adam has a very nice painting inferred to be in Wellesley’s style#and Aspen Creek era Wellesley only paints for his friends#ergo he’s met Adam at some point and my headcanon for this is#it was when Adam was a baby werewolf full of piss and vinegar#Wellesley thinks he’s delightful because he’s young enough to think military tech is fun and exciting not newfangled bullshit#Patricia briggs: this werewolf is an African nobleman and priest turned bomb specialist and artist#me: OH FUCK HEAH I WANT FIVE THOUSAND BOOKS ON HIM#i could give him my opinions on Benjamin West (basic bitch)#it would give me an excuse to research the luminists again#mercy Thompson#Fic musing

what footballers do you think would make good hockey players
hi max!
sorry this is so late i had to really think about this. to me, there are two ways to go about this: one, who (right now) could realistically go onto the ice and play a game of hockey. the other is who (hypothetically, if they played hockey instead of football since they were a kid) would succeed in the sport.
for the first one, i literally cannot think of a single player. sorry footballers of the world, but skating is a skill that im not sure many footballers know how to do. let alone the rest of the sport, hockey is so so different than football. this sounds really mean! i don't mean to be mean, but the athleticism that hockey players have is quite different than most other sports. a lot of other sports' skills transfer between sports well, but hockey is an outlier in terms of popular world sports.
for the second one, honestly not many? the one that stands out to me is probably sergio ramos, mostly because he is very skilled with the ball and blocking shots, and obviously he has killer instinct on the field which all would transfer very well to hockey. he would thrive! he could fight and slash and check to his heart's content with only penalty being 2 minutes in the box, not a game ejection.
i think the funnier question would be what players would be terrible at hockey, like if you put them in the nhl they would just wilt. the one that i think of immediately is neymar! sorry ney, but you and your glass ankles would be absolutely destroyed in hockey! and idk if he has the hand-eye coordination to transfer his jogo bonito with his feet to his hands for beautiful dangles. the other one who i think would suffer is haaland, because even though he is really tall and broad, i think on skates he would turn into bambi! there are other players in the nhl who are that tall and broad, but they know how to use their height to absolutely crush people on the ice, and i don't think haaland knows how to do that.
also could you imagine the instincts football players would have? they hear the whistle, hands up, get called for high sticking! at the end of the third period its a draw, they are ready to go home but there is more game to play! they try to clear the puck over the glass to get a throw in, but there aren't any throw ins, and he goes to the box for delay of game!
tl:dr i would love to see footballers play hockey i think it would be so funny, but i don't think any of them would be good at it unless we lived in an alternate universe where they grew up playing hockey, but even then idk how good they would be
#bestie asks 🫶#max 🦋#this sounds mean i am not diminishing their talent!#hockey just requires an athletic skillset that differs so heavily from football#so i don't think their skills would transfer well#also the climate? the south american and african players would not have a fun time#hypothetically i would love to see an all footballer hockey game#that would be my avengers endgame#this was fun to think about though sorry this isn't the best answer#also max saying footballers instead of soccer players? time to celebrate everyone#thank you for the ask!

Bill Pickett (ca 1870-1932), African American Cowboy inventor of "bulldogging," a rodeo technique to wrestle a steer to the ground.
From 1905 to 1931, the Miller brothers' 101 Ranch Wild West Show was one of the great shows in the tradition begun by William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody in 1883. The 101 Ranch Show introduced bulldogging (steer wrestling), an exciting rodeo event invented by Bill Pickett, one of the show's stars.
Riding his horse, Spradley, Pickett came alongside a Longhorn steer, dropped to the steer's head, twisted its head toward the sky, and bit its upper lip to get full control. Cowdogs of the Bulldog breed were known to bite the lips of cattle to subdue them. That's how Pickett's technique got the name "bulldogging." As the event became more popular among rodeo cowboys, the lip biting became increasingly less popular until it disappeared from steer wrestling altogether. Bill Pickett, however, became an immortal rodeo cowboy, and his fame has grown since his death.
He died in 1932 as a result of injuries received from working horses at the 101 Ranch. His grave is on what is left of the 101 Ranch property near Ponca City, Oklahoma. Pickett was inducted into the National Rodeo Hall of Fame in 1972 for his contribution to the sport.
Bill Pickett was the second of thirteen children born to Thomas Jefferson and Mary Virginia Elizabeth (Gilbert) Pickett, both of whom were former slaves. He began his career as a cowboy after completing the fifth grade. Bill soon began giving exhibitions of his roping, riding and bulldogging skills, passing a hat for donations.
By 1888, his family had moved to Taylor, Texas, and Bill performed in the town's first fair that year. He and his brothers started a horse-breaking business in Taylor, and Bill was a member of the national guard and a deacon of the Baptist church. In December 1890, Bill married Maggie Turner.
Known by the nicknames "The Dusky Demon" and "The Bull-Dogger," Pickett gave exhibitions in Texas and throughout the West. His performance in 1904 at the Cheyenne Frontier Days (America's best-known rodeo) was considered extraordinary and spectacular. He signed on with the 101 Ranch show in 1905, becoming a full-time ranch employee in 1907. The next year, he moved his wife and children to Oklahoma.
He later performed in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, South America, and England, and became the first black cowboy movie star. Had he not been banned from competing with white rodeo contestants, Pickett might have become one of the greatest record-setters in his sport. He was often identified as an Indian, or some other ethnic background other than black, to be allowed to compete.
Bill Pickett died April 2, 1932, after being kicked in the head by a horse. Famed humorist Will Rogers announced the funeral of his friend on his radio show. In 1989, years after being honored by the National Rodeo Hall of Fame, Pickett was inducted into the Prorodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy at Colorado Springs, Colorado. A 1994 U.S. postage stamp meant to honor Pickett accidentally showed one of his brothers.
