The Midlands Trashion Show 2024, held during Plastic Free July, served as a reminder of the pervasive issue of single-use plastic pollution. This year, 130 students demonstrated their creativity and commitment to sustainability by re-purposing discarded plastic into remarkable fashion statements.
Charlene Chinembiri, inspired by videos posted online, created an ensemble from a feed bag and wool, assisted by her fashion-enthusiast sister.
Thandoluhle Khumalo, from Lions River, turned mealie meal bags from her school feeding programme into a dress with her mother's help, showcasing the potential of everyday waste.
Standout creations included Naledi Duma's party dress, Hannah Zunckel's intricate bodice made of metal ring pulls with a CD skirt, and Alwonde Mpangase's pleated frock.
Laila Gangerdine captured the title of Trashion Queen with a detailed dress and headdress made from card and plastic, while Emihle Sithole's layered newspaper skirt earned her the Pompom Princess title.
Dineo Hlatswayo's checkerboard dress, which required her to rise at 4am to travel from the Drakensberg, was awarded a prize for its elegance.
Boys also made a significant impact at the event, with Thokozani Makhaye in his pink rapper outfit and Zekhethelo Dlamini's astronaut costume drawing attention. The wire car category saw Kiara Hansraj win for her neatly finished, spray-painted vehicle, Zanokuhle Sithole for the best suspension, and Lukhona Sishi for the best overall design.
Prizes for winners in various categories were practical items promoting environmental care, such as bamboo toothbrushes, wooden combs, and washable menstrual products. These eco-friendly alternatives highlight the need for sustainable choices to reduce plastic waste.

wanna ask the same question... it's a fun one! ocs that would cling to a vocal synth bank they like and which is their favorite?
i have to start with mkoom since he's canonically into the voca scene he's a diehard miku fan but also really loves lily. his room is filled with miku but when it comes down to it he ends up using lily more (never posts his works). despite liking a lot of voicebanks he only owns lily & miku v3.
wyndi would LOVE #kzn so much they would have no less than 6 charms of her they switch between regularly clipped somewhere on their outfit. would never be a synth user but regardless Thats Their Synth.
keppi would like kafu i think. he'd be a little more normal about her than wyndi is with kzn but like. kafu would still compel him in some way he'd be keeping up with new kafu songs relatively without thought.
that said i think the biggest kafu fan would be amaryllis now SHE would adore kafu to the point of always having the kafu plushie with her, always searching for kafu covers of songs she likes, shares every single fan art she comes across. fjahva knows he cant hang out with her without kafu being mentioned at least once. she would really like kafu.
iraidis would like una i think. would tease the other two like "yeah yeah but ur faves could never do what una can do" & then purposely put on an una song she doesnt even like just to see their faces. she sees an una song in the daily ranking and goes yess my girlboss is winning yet again. would get una motif earrings & sit there wondering when anyone else was going to clock them as una motif so she could be like hahah yeah i like una (downplaying it)
void would get drawn to stardust bc she would remind them of ryuusei at first & then it gradually turns into really liking stardust. would probably reach the point of going to whatever length they needed to buy her only to then open up the editor & get too intimidated to ever actually use her. would have a separate side acc on social media just for sharing fan art although every once in a while the aesthetic lines up enough they feel like they can get away with sharing it on their main too.
sarlina would be a huge popy fan shed think popy is so cute in design & voice & it would end up getting her into playing bandori not long after she finds out. has no preference for synthv or cevio all popy is good popy to her. has not yet figured out she can look for new song via the popy original song tag so her playlist is just whats popular & what her mutuals recommend. she wouldnt be super into the synth scene as a whole popy is just the exception

Empowering Rural Communities: Focusing on Five Sustainable Development Goals
In the vibrant and resource-limited rural communities of KZN, I have found myself in a role far removed from the traditional rehabilitation I once envisioned. Working as an OT in this setting has reshaped my understanding of healthcare and broadened my perspective beyond what I initially thought OT entailed. My journey has evolved into a deep-seated passion for community-based work. The culture shock, challenges, and the need to quickly grasp new concepts have been a transformative experience.
Tumblr media
(Mlgrs Graphic Design, 2022)
I am still in the process of changing and transforming, as my journey in this community continues to shape and refine my understanding of true impact.
Tumblr media
(Cass, 2024)
As I’ve grown in my role, it has become increasingly clear that the community faces significant struggles, many of which directly impact their quality of life. Recognizing these challenges has fuelled my desire to effect meaningful change. With a focus on five Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), I aim to contribute to the community’s well-being through targeted interventions. The Sustainable Development Goals are a global project, and the future of our earth rests in our hands—the achievement of these goals depends on our collective effort and commitment. These goals are good health and well-being, quality education, sustainable cities and communities, reduced inequality, and no poverty.
1. Quality Education
The 2016 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) revealed that a staggering 78% of South African Grade 4 learners could not read for meaning in any language (Howie et al., 2017). This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for improved literacy education. The ability to read with comprehension is not only crucial for language subjects but is fundamental across all areas of learning.
Tumblr media
(Seylan, 2011)
In response to this, I’ve become involved in a Grade 4 and 5 Reading Club within the community. However, it’s clear that literacy support needs to begin earlier and extend beyond these grades. As part of our community project, we are working with volunteers to make these reading sessions more engaging, fostering a love for learning from a young age. We’re also discussing the possibility of extending these initiatives to younger grades.
Additionally, our stakeholder meetings with local teachers have highlighted the need for more comprehensive support for students with learning difficulties. To address this, we’re planning the RedFlag workshop, aimed at equipping primary and high school teachers with the skills to identify and support students who may have learning challenges. This workshop will also emphasize the importance of parent involvement, as effective education often requires a collaborative effort between teachers and families. By raising awareness and providing resources, we hope to build a strong educational foundation for all children in the community.
2. Good Health and Well-being
Good health is the cornerstone of a thriving community. However, in rural areas, access to healthcare services is often limited. The WHO has long advocated for a decentralized approach to healthcare, particularly through the PHC model, which aims to bring essential health services closer to those in need (WHO, 1978).
In this community, implementing the principles of Community-Based Rehabilitation is crucial. CBR utilizes local resources and encourages community involvement in health initiatives. This approach is particularly effective in rural settings, where traditional rehabilitation services may be inaccessible. By focusing on maternal health, immunisations, and preventative care, we can reduce the incidence of disabilities and promote overall well-being.
One practical step is conducting regular screenings at local clinics to monitor immunisations, maternal health, and contraception use. These screenings not only help prevent health issues but also serve as an entry point for broader health education and intervention.
3. Reduced Inequality
Inequality is one of South Africa’s most pressing challenges, and it is particularly pronounced in rural communities like Zwelibumvu. Access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities is often limited, exacerbating the difficulties faced by vulnerable populations.
By bringing services directly to people’s homes, we can ensure that everyone, regardless of their socio-economic status, has the opportunity to improve their health and well-being.
Community events, like the Men’s Dialogue in Zwelibumvu, offer platforms for individuals to share experiences, foster understanding, and build a more inclusive environment. While I couldn’t directly participate in the men’s discussions due to cultural norms, listening from outside provided valuable insights. My colleague’s engagement with the men on mental health, community, and social issues was a step towards breaking down barriers and promoting equality. Reducing inequality requires creating opportunities for people to thrive, and through targeted interventions and community involvement, this goal becomes attainable.
Tumblr media
(Seriff Graphically Speaking, 2016)
Building sustainable, inclusive, and resilient communities is vital for enhancing the quality of life in rural areas. The recent floods in KZN highlighted the vulnerability of these communities, with many homes destroyed by natural disasters.
If an opportunity to build sustainable cities and communities doesn't present itself, we must take the initiative to create it, driving change from within our own efforts and resources.
Soil erosion is a significant issue in the area, exacerbated by grazing practices that uproot vegetation and leave the soil exposed. To combat this, we are working on educating the community about sustainable farming practices, such as controlled grazing and rotational farming. These practices can help preserve the land, reduce erosion, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the community’s agricultural resources.
Through community events and workshops, we aim to raise awareness about these issues and promote practices that contribute to the resilience and sustainability of the community.
5. No Poverty
Poverty is a pervasive issue that affects every aspect of life and is intertwined with many of the other SDGs. In this community, many families struggle to meet their basic needs, making poverty alleviation a top priority.
Tumblr media
(Ondemand, 2020)
One approach is to provide skills training workshops focused on agriculture, crafts, and other income-generating activities. By equipping people with the skills needed to earn a living, we can help break the cycle of poverty.
Addressing substance abuse and school attendance is another critical component of this goal. Through education and targeted interventions, we aim to guide young people away from destructive habits and towards a path of academic and professional success. By providing support and resources, we can empower the youth to achieve their full potential and contribute to the economic stability of their families and the broader community.
Maternal health is another crucial aspect of poverty alleviation. A healthy pregnancy and proper prenatal and postnatal care can significantly impact a child’s development and a mother’s ability to work. By educating mothers and providing them with the resources they need, we can improve outcomes for both the mother and child, contributing to the family’s overall well-being and financial stability (World Health Organization, 2019).
As an OT, educating women about maternal health, young adults about substance abuse or offering insights on addressing mental health can create a ripple effect that influences not just the immediate well-being of the person but also shapes the community and future generations, paving the way for more successful lives and breaking away from the poverty cycle.
By focusing on these five Sustainable Development Goals, I hope to make a meaningful impact in the rural community I serve. Each goal is interconnected, and progress in one area often supports progress in others. Through education, health promotion, reducing inequality, building sustainable communities, and combating poverty, we can create a brighter future for the people of KZN.

Unveiling the Essence of UKZN's Occupational Therapy Curriculum
Walking through the corridors of healthcare education, we stumble upon a treasure chest of wisdom and wonder—the UKZN Occupational Therapy curriculum. Like a map to hidden treasures, it promises to guide aspiring therapists.
Tumblr media
As the role of Occupational Therapists continues to be dynamic and continuously evolve, the need for practitioners who are well-prepared to work in community and primary healthcare (PHC) settings has become increasingly apparent. At the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), the OT curriculum plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of OT practice. In this blog, we delve deeper into the fabric of this curriculum, it becomes imperative to scrutinize its efficacy and in this,, we embark on a journey of reflection, dissecting the curriculum through the lens of community care.
At the heart of UKZN's OT program lies a four-year undergraduate journey, crafted to shape empathetic professionals equipped with the knowledge and skills to transform lives. Guided by seasoned educators, students delve into a myriad of subjects ranging from Anatomy, Psychology and Physiology to the philosophical underpinnings of OT Theory and Practice. Theory comes to life through hands-on experiences during Fieldwork Placements. Here, students immerse themselves in clinical settings, applying classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios where these placement within the KZN province are the crucible where theory meets reality, fostering the development of competent and compassionate practitioners. Complementing the core curriculum are electives designed for the curriculum. From assistive technology to community-based interventions, these electives empower one to carve your niche within the profession, nurturing unique talents and interests.
Delving into the heart of occupational therapy education at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), one finds a curriculum that transcends the confines of clinical walls, embracing the principles of community-based practice and primary healthcare (PHC). Within the fabric of core courses like Occupational Therapy Theory and Practice and Professional Issues in OT, the curriculum intricately weaves discussions on community interventions and the imperative of addressing health disparities in diverse populations.
Moreover, UKZN's commitment to community-centric care is palpable through dedicated courses and clinical placements designed for this purpose. These courses delve into community assessment, program development, and advocacy strategies, equipping students with the tools to effect change beyond traditional healthcare settings. Clinical placements then provide the crucible for experiential learning, immersing students in community health centers, schools, and nonprofit organizations. Here, they apply theoretical knowledge to real-world contexts, fostering cultural competence and collaboration within multidisciplinary teams.
The community I currently serve has numerous areas requiring the intervention of Occupational Therapists. However, once students depart, the community lacks ongoing support. This reality is disheartening and requires attention, with no profession better suited to address it than ours. We consider the individual holistically. We assess their home environment, support systems, available resources, mental health, HIV status, nutrition, and sleep patterns. Despite having much to offer, our valuable work isn't fully utilized where it's most needed.
I found this amazing article that highlights our readiness to practicing within rural settings, please have a quick look.
There are several challenges and limitations that warrant consideration. Significant challenges being resource constraints, potentially impacting the availability of state-of-the-art equipment, technology, and facilities essential for comprehensive training. Limited clinical placements in community settings also poses a barrier, as hands-on experience in diverse environments is crucial for developing practical skills and cultural competence. In the beginning of my degree we were faced with the unfortunate introduction of the COVID-19 pandemic in which we were not able to go into the community and gain essential practical knowledge from the Community Studies module present withing the OT curriculum. Additionally, there might be gaps in the curriculum content, such as insufficient emphasis on advocacy training or addressing the social determinants of health, which are essential for effective community-based practice. Overcoming these challenges requires a concerted effort from educators, policymakers, and healthcare institutions to allocate resources effectively, expand clinical placement opportunities, and continuously review and update curriculum content to ensure that students are adequately prepared to address more complex needs of communities in PHC settings as communities are constantly evolving.
One notable aspect is the emphasis on experiential learning opportunities embedded throughout the curriculum. Through clinical placements in diverse community settings, students gain first-hand experience working with individuals and populations in need.
Moreover, the Community module in our final year fosters a culture of community engagement by encouraging us to participate in community-based projects and service-learning initiatives. By collaborating with local organizations, such as community health centers, schools, and advocacy groups, we have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills to address real-world challenges and contribute to positive social change. These experiential learning opportunities not only deepen our understanding of community health issues but also cultivate their empathy, cultural competence, and advocacy skills—essential attributes for effective practice in community and PHC settings. The way that the curriculum is structured allows for being a dynamic OT who is able to work in various community settings, encourages working under pressure to meet goals and prepares us for the real word by the hours we spend within the communities.
One of the common responses found from the study below was that the participants found it challenging to practice within the realities of a rural setting because of the resource constraints and because the undergraduate programme and clinical skills development had mainly occurred in well-equipped tertiary hospitals. It's not uncommon for practitioners to find it challenging to transition to rural settings due to resource constraints and the focus on training in well-equipped tertiary hospitals during our education. This disparity in experiences and resources can create barriers to effective practice in rural areas.
In reimagining the Occupational Therapy (OT) curriculum at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) to better equip students for community and primary healthcare (PHC) settings, several key recommendations emerge. Firstly, integrating more robust community-based learning opportunities throughout the curriculum, including extended clinical placements in diverse environments, could provide invaluable hands-on experience. Additionally, fostering interprofessional education (IPE) initiatives would enhance collaboration skills essential for interdisciplinary PHC practice. Strengthening cultural competence training and expanding community-based research projects could deepen students' understanding of the complexities of working with diverse populations. Moreover, integrating advocacy training and offering elective courses in community health would empower students to advocate for policy changes addressing health disparities. Finally, forging stronger partnerships with local organizations would facilitate expanded clinical placements and community-based projects, enriching students' engagement with PHC initiatives. By embracing these recommendations, UKZN can ensure that its OT curriculum remains dynamic, relevant, and impactful in preparing future practitioners for the multifaceted challenges of community-oriented practice.
As we draw the curtains on our exploration of the UKZN Occupational Therapy curriculum, one thing becomes abundantly clear: the journey to community care excellence is a dynamic and evolving one. Through the lens of our analysis, we've glimpsed the strengths and opportunities embedded within the curriculum, each a testament to the dedication of educators and the aspirations of future therapists.
Yet, within this journey to finding the treasure chest, there are obstacles in the road and peaks to conquer. My reflection on the curriculum's pros and cons serves as a guide towards innovation and improvement. Let us harness the insights gleaned here to nurture a curriculum that not only prepares students for the rigors of community and PHC practice but also instils within them the spirit of compassionate care and unwavering dedication to those they serve.
As the sun sets on our discussion, let us carry forward the torch of inquiry and advocacy, knowing that the seeds of change we plant today will bloom into a future where community care thrives and flourishes.
In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, the role of occupational therapists as champions of community care and primary healthcare has never been more crucial. Through our exploration of the UKZN Occupational Therapy curriculum, we've journeyed through the corridors of learning, uncovering both its strengths and areas ripe for growth.

SANCTUARY PRIVATE ESTATE, RIDGESIDE
Tumblr media
As director of a residential property development company based in Johannesburg, South Africa, Laurence Grigorov subscribes to various magazines which feature exciting and new developments and projects. Keeping track of these projects gives Laurence Grigorov an insight in potential residential and commercial market trends and changes.
Set amongst the gentle sloping coastal grasslands and protected indigenous forests that form uMhlanga Ridgeside’s ‘Green-T’ is Sanctuary Private Estate.
The gated estate’s elevated vantage point overlooks the Indian Ocean, forest tree lines and dams below, offering a tranquil contrast to the urban city bustle of uMhlanga.
Sanctuary Private Estate will comprise of three phased developments totalling 350 residential opportunities to be built over the next three years. The estate will offer a range of products from studio apartments to 4-bedroom townhouses to suit a diverse range of requirements all underpinned by a common goal to maximise quality of living and connectivity with nature.
FWJK’s Managing Director, Dan Gardner, says that “Sanctuary Private Estate will redefine urban living in the area, offering residents the unique opportunity to break away from urban pressures and unwind in nature, right in the heart of uMhlanga.” The estate will offer bird watching hides, viewing platforms, a fishing jetty, mountain biking and walking trails, kiddies play areas, a paddle court and more.
Phase one, TYNE, houses 36 shortstay letting apartments set near the entrance of the estate. The building floats above a protected green-belt and dam boasting uninterrupted ocean views. The splayed balcony slabs emphasise the floating effect of the structural design.
Each apartment flows onto a generous private balcony, taking advantage of KZN’s indoor/outdoor lifestyle. Phase two, YORK, is composed of 115 luxury apartments all of which perch unapologetically from the upper precipice of the estate giving rise to the most spectacular ocean and Durban harbour views within Sanctuary Private Estate.
The orientation of the views, as well as the unique shape and topography of the site, leads to the striking architecture of the building, whose powerful form resembles that of a ship’s stern heading out to sea. Clean lines, quality finishes and purposeful spaces set the scene for a peaceful and relaxed lifestyle in a perfectly positioned ‘sanctuary’.
Phase three, SAGE, is in the concept planning stage and will be launched to the market in early 2023. This last phase within the estate will consist of 199 opportunities offering a range of semi-detached town houses as well as apartments to suit a diverse spectrum of requirements.
