DM prompt from astrophile: “POL; where are they when they find out about Emily?”
She hears the soft flap of the tent lift and drop, his scratchy shuffle as he sets down his equipment bag, as he kicks off his shoes. There is the whisper of the mosquito net billowing as he slips through it and then the thin mattress dips. She rolls toward him, presses a hand to his warm back. He’s been in the bush for 16 days.
“I’m sorry I woke you,” he says, leaning down to kiss her. His breath is soft and peppery, and on his shirt she smells dust, the sweet scent of the gardenias that ring the camp along with a brief, sharp popcorn whiff of leopard piss.
“I was awake,” she says.
“You okay?” he asks, groaning slightly as he settles in beside her. He sleeps on the ground out there, and his bones aren’t what they were in his twenties.
“Mm,” she hums. How to tell him? she thinks.
The day was blisteringly hot, but a low rumble of distant thunder promises some relief. The storm will be brewing up from the south and she can picture the anvil-head clouds rolling in over the savanna, as she catches the first whiff of ozone. Beyond the edge of the camp she can hear the snort of a wildebeest and the patter-thump sound of an impala herd gearing up for the excitement. The rain will bring relief, but sustenance, too. Life.
“How did it go out there?” she asks.
He rolls into her, throws a heavy leg over her knees, pulls her close.
“Great,” he sighs. “More than enough for the meerkat piece.”
“How about your stuff?” she asks. “Do you…have enough to publish?”
He can hear the odd tone in her voice, and lifts his head, props it on an elbow. The first wave of rain sweeps overhead, pattering softly onto the canvas above them.
“Scully, what’s going on?”
“There was an earthquake in Haiti,” she says. “DWB asked me, Rudolph, and Singh if we could go.”
“Short stint or long?”
“Hard to say,” she says. “You know how these things go.”
He hums an affirmative.
“I’d like you to come with me.”
They’ve spent alternating months apart since she started working with Doctors Without Borders, each of them necessarily okay with the separations. He has a couple more months here, contracted out to a Discovery Channel team. On his off time, he’s been shooting for an African collection he hopes to sell to Scholastic.
His forehead crinkles in concern. “Scully is there something-”
“I’m pregnant,” she blurts.
Mulder’s face freezes, but his eyes go soft.

Sarraounia Mangou, the Nigerien African queen and sorceress
In the late 1800s, the French Voulet- Chanoine Mission or Central African-Chad Mission, led by the captains Paul Voulet and Julien Chanoine, were dispatched to Africa by the French government to conquer the territories between the Niger River and Lake Chad and unify all French territories in West Africa.
History says that after leaving French Sudan in January 1899, they became very callous and subjected the native people to all kinds of inhumane treatment.
They were just unstoppable until they met Sarraounia Mangou.
Sarraounia (a title indicating a female chief or a lineage of female rulers) was the Queen of the Azna, a subgroup of the Hausa, who ruled in the Niger Republic, during the late 19th century.
She was born with yellow eyes, like those of a panther and so the panther became the symbol of the Azna.
She became queen at the age of 20, after her father’s death.
Said to possess sorcerous powers, Sarraounia had, before the French invasion, fought wars on behalf of her people.
She first drove off the Tuareg, who often attempted to raid her village, then the Fulani, who wanted to convert the Azna to Islam.
Since she had often won peace with both tribes, she sought their help to fight a common enemy the French but they refused.
She subsequently mobilized her people and resources to confront the French forces of the Voulet–Chanoine Mission, which launched a fierce attack on her fortress capital of Lougou.
Known as the Battle of Lougou in 1899, the Voulet-Chanoine Mission met the strongest force and lost several men to the fighting.
What Sarraounia and her people also did was to raid the French on a nightly basis, appearing from what historians called the almost impenetrable bush where the Azna defended themselves when facing a superior enemy.
They disappeared quickly into the bush after the raid.
As many began talking about the magical prowess of the Queen, many of the army on the French side deserted the camp. Most of them were Africans who were forced into service.
The attacks eventually came to an end and within three months, the expedition commanders Voulet and Chanoine were assassinated by their own soldiers over their refusal to obey orders from France and other atrocities.
But many still attributed their deaths to the magical prowess of Sarraounia.
•••

Ten years ago, Solomon Maina's daughter, Debora, was one of 276 schoolgirls kidnapped from their dormitory in the middle of the night by Nigeria's Boko Haram Islamist militants.
Global outrage was swift. A ubiquitous "Bring Back Our Girls" campaign, drawing support from the likes of Michelle Obama and Sylvester Stallone, shined a spotlight on the abductions. Then, in 2016 and 2017, negotiations led to the highly publicised liberation of around 100 of the captives.
Debora was not one of them.
A decade after that fateful night in April 2014, the world has largely forgotten the plight of the so-called Chibok girls.
But for the victims and their families, the tragedy is ongoing.
"Especially at night, I think about my daughter," Maina, in tears, told Reuters in an interview at his home in Chibok, a Christian enclave in the West African nation's majority Muslim north. "I will never forget her."
Abductees who have returned home have struggled to resume their interrupted lives. Some are raising children fathered by their captors. Others have waited years for funds promised by the government to continue their education.
Those who spent the longest time in captivity have often had the most difficulty reintegrating with civilian life.
Dozens freed only in the past few years are living inside a military-run rehabilitation camp with surrendered Boko Haram fighters they married in the bush, according to the Murtala Muhammed Foundation, a charity that advocates for them. With them are more than 30 children.
"I'm tired of staying in the camp," one Chibok survivor told Reuters, asking not to be identified for fear of reprisals by the military. "I want to go home and stay with my family. There is no place like home."
Three of the surviving women told Reuters that in at least five cases women who arrived at the camp unmarried have been married to surrendered fighters once there. Government officials have officiated over such weddings, in an apparent effort to appease the surrendered fighters, family members say.
Aid groups and relatives say there is no clarity surrounding when - or even if - the women in the camp will be allowed to return home.
"They were brainwashed and their psychological thinking and mindset were changed to favour their abductors," said Dauda Yama whose daughter is inside the camp.
The state official in charge of the rehabilitation project did not respond to a Reuters request for comment.
Still missing
Roughly 90 Chibok girls are still missing. Based on the accounts of former abductees, the Murtala Muhammed Foundation believes a third of those have died in captivity.
"Some died of childbirth, some of starvation or snakebite others in government air strikes" against Boko Haram, said Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode, the foundation's head. A parents association for the Chibok girls also estimates dozens are now dead.
Nigeria's president's office and the interior ministry did not respond to requests for comment on how many of the missing Chibok girls were believed to still be alive.
Early on, as the girls began emerging from captivity in the bush and their fate was still a rallying cause around the world, the government pledged to fund their studies in "any field of their choice."
Some liberated captives are attending universities as far afield as the United States. But some say the assistance never arrived.
Yagana Yamani waited for government funds for six years after escaping her captors. She finally asked her mother, a farmer, to help. Now 25, she is studying public health.
"They didn't fulfil their promise," she said.
The federal government did not respond to requests for comment on the question of whether it failed to provide promised support.
Nigeria's military has been fighting Boko Haram since 2009 in a conflict that killed tens of thousands of people and displaced more than 2 million.
While the group aims to topple Nigeria's government to establish a state based on its own interpretation of Islamic law, to many people around the world it is best known for the Chibok kidnapping.
Soon after the raid, then-President Goodluck Jonathan promised that the girls would be brought home. Solomon Maina feels he is alone grappling with his daughter's fate.
Through a freed abductee, he learned that Debora had been injured but survived a bombing raid on Boko Haram. He believes she's still out there, alive.
"Where is she now? Is she in a comfortable place?" he said.
"I think about this all the time."

UN NUOVO RUOLO DELLE DONNE IN AFRICA: GUIDE DEI PARCHI
Tumblr media

Why, then, did the killings go on for so long? The same irrationality lies at the heart of many other mass murders. In the Soviet Union, for example, shooting or jailing political opponents at first helped the Communist Party and then Josef Stalin gain absolute power. But after there were no visible opponents left, seven million more people were executed, and many millions more died in the far-flung camps of the gulag. So many engineers were seized that factories came to a halt; so many railway men died that some trains did not run; so many colonels and generals were shot that the almost leaderless Red Army was nearly crushed by the German invasion of 1941.
In the Congo, as in Russia, mass murder had a momentum of its own. Power is tempting, and in a sense no power is greater than the ability to take someone's life. Once under way, mass killing is hard to stop; it becomes a kind of sport, like hunting. Congo annals abound in cases like that of René de Permentier, an officer in the Equator district in the late 1890s. The Africans nicknamed him Bajunu (for bas genoux, on your knees), because he always made people kneel before him. He had all the bushes and trees cut down around his house at Bokatola so that from his porch he could use passersby for target practice. If he found a leaf in a courtyard that women prisoners had swept, he ordered a dozen of them beheaded. If he found a path in the forest not well-maintained, he ordered a child killed in the nearest village.
Two Force Publique officers, Clément Brasseur and Léon Cerckel, once ordered a man hung from a palm tree by his feet while a fire was lit beneath him and he was cooked to death. Two missionaries found one post where prisoners were killed by having resin poured over their heads, then set on fire. The list is much longer.
Michael Herr, the most brilliant reporter of the Vietnam War, captures the same frenzy in the voice of one American soldier he met: "We'd rip out the hedges and burn the hooches and blow all the wells and kill every chicken, pig and cow in the whole fucking ville. I mean, if we can't shoot these people, what the fuck are we doing here?" When another American, Francis Ford Coppola, tried to put the blood lust of that war on film, where did he turn for the plot of his Apocalypse Now? To Joseph Conrad, who had seen it all, a century earlier, in the Congo.
—King Leopold’s Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror, & Heroism in Colonial Africa
Reading this due to current events (Congo, Palestine, Ukraine, Myanmar, Azerbaijan, Xinjiang, Tigray, Manipur… nothing ever changes, does it)

I turned 30 being surrounded by strangers in a foreign country halfway across the world.
I’m going through all my pictures and I can’t believe half of the things I got to experience out there. 4 African countries, 6 safari drives, 1 walking safari tour, zip lining from Zambia to Zimbabwe, flying in a helicopter for the first time, camping in the middle of the bush & having a night out in one of the most dangerous cities in South Africa.
This trip was unforgettable. I’m so glad I did it. Being surrounded by other adventurous souls made me realize how much I love & missed traveling, not vacationing. I feel realigned & ready for this new era. I’m already planning my next adventure. 🥰🫶🏼🇿🇦🇿🇼🇿🇲🇧🇼

🐾⚔️ for all of them :)
🐾 [PAW PRINTS] -> Does your Original Character own any pets? If so, how many and what kind?
Ylva - Basically owns a private zoo at this point, she has so many animals. Dogs, cats, rabbits, birds you name it, she probably has it.
Phoenix - Also owns a lot of animals, but she trains animals for tv and movies
Branwen - has a small flock of ravens, and a cat. The ravens are named after the Addams Family and the cat is named Salem
Calamity - she has a seagull named Fripp :)
Lorelei - doesn't have any pets in the traditional sense, but she does take care of the animals that live in her lake
Blake - co-owns Phoenix's animals because they're together <3
Persephone - she has an African bush viper that is basically a glorified house plant
Aida - she has a black and white cat named Oreo
Drew - doesn't have the time for any pets, but if he did it'd be something low maintenance like a ball python
Morgan - her dad is a wildlife rehabber, so they're not pets, but she does spend a lot of time around animals
Hayden - she has a Rottweiler mix puppy named Libby
Max - no pets currently, but I could see him getting a rabbit or guinea pig.
⚔️ [CROSSED SWORDS] -> What is your Original Character's relationship to Dark Core, their Riders, and Garnok in general?
Ylva - Even though they're supposed to be enemies, Ylva kind of pities the Dark Riders. She can't help it, it's just who she is. In another lifetime she feels they could be friends. Thinks Darko is a pathetic wet cat and Mr Sands is a loser, though.
Phoenix - Tries to ignore them mostly, she's tired of the emotional whiplash they give her between flirting and attempted murder.
Branwen - No real feelings either way about them, though she did turn down their offer to recruit her. She did once have a violin battle with Katja though.
Calamity - Was briefly part of Dark Core, but they kicked her out because she was too annoying. She still shows up every now and again because they refuse to update their security. She also broke their portal by accident.
Lorelei - Doesn't like Dark Core, she despises what they're doing to the environment, and is personally responsible for that scar on Sabine's face
Blake - Basically ignores Dark Core.
Persephone - Had a Raptor-esque experience with Dark Core briefly before she broke off their contract and has ignored them since
Aida - Detests Dark Core, the Dark Riders and everything they stand for.
Drew - Blissfully unaware
Morgan - In the same camp as Lorelei, hates how badly they're screwing up the ecosystem with their bullshit
Hayden - Kinda stays out it, she knows they're bad, and she helps the druids and keepers of aideen how she can but she's not a fighter
Max - Blissfully unaware of everything

Despite not having being schooled in the traditional sense, Elmon is an educated man. ‘The bush is my classroom and the animals, my teachers.’ he said with his stern, yet friendly expression. Throughout his lifetime he has undergone a ‘schooling’ which very few humans have ever been fortunate enough to have, and even fewer will in time to come. On watching a lioness pawing at a male to wake him from his slumber to mate yet again, Elmon turns to me, chuckles and says “It’s the 1st time I’ve seen that. In the bush, I will learn until I die!”
Elmon is one of the earliest leopard trackers in South Africa. He came from the same generation as Mother Leopard, the first leopard viewable to human eyes in Londolozi. It was during this time that the reserve became a leading destination for leopard viewing.

These immersive adventures take travellers far beyond the typical tourist trails, allowing them to connect with local communities, traditions, and customs on a profound level.
Whether it's spending the night in a traditional homestead with the welcoming Bakiga people in the south-western highlands or participating in age-old rituals and ceremonies with the Karamojong in the north-eastern plains, Uganda cultural camping safaris provide a rare glimpse into the soul of the country.
Tumblr media
Sharing stories around the campfire, engaging in traditional dances, and enjoying local cuisine are just some of the highlights of these culturally enriching experiences, which leave a lasting impression and foster a deeper appreciation for Uganda's vibrant heritage.
The appeal of adventure camping safaris
Closer to Nature
Adventure camping safaris are all about getting back to basics and embracing the simplicity of life in the wild. You will sleep under the star-studded African sky, serenaded by the sounds of the bush. The canvas walls of your tent are all that separates you from the wild, providing an authentic and immersive experience.
Expert Guides and Bushcraft Skills
Your adventure camping safari will be led by experienced guides who have an intimate knowledge of Kenya's flora and fauna. They're skilled in tracking wildlife and will share their expertise, making every moment an educational experience. You may even have the chance to learn basic bushcraft skills, like fire-making and identifying animal tracks.
Off-the-Beaten-Path Exploration
Unlike traditional safaris that stick to established routes, adventure camping safaris in Kenya are all about exploring off-the-beaten-path locations. You will venture into remote corners of national parks and reserves, encountering wildlife in their natural habitat without the crowds.
Flexible Itineraries
Adventure camping safaris offer flexible itineraries, allowing you to adapt to the ever-changing rhythm of the wilderness. If you stumble upon a pride of lions on the hunt or a group of elephants at a watering hole, your guide can adjust the plans to ensure you don't miss a thing.
Campfire Stories and Starlit Nights
Evenings around the campfire are the heart and soul of adventure camping safaris. Swap stories with fellow travellers, listen to the calls of nocturnal animals, and gaze at the stars in a sky unpolluted by city lights. It's a chance to connect with nature and your fellow adventurers on a profound level.

Leopard drinking at waterhole - yes, he disturbed our dinner! We could not imagine staying in the parks and not photographing after the sun goes down! We have photographed lions, leopards, cheetah, caracal, porcupine, African wild cat, genets, bush babies, civet, owls and more, mostly from the camps, what we call the ‘Sofa Safari’.  The issue of using spotlights and flashes can be a hotly debated one but I think it’s like anything else, some people will abuse the item while others will use it responsibly.   I think these comments from @BrendonCremer sum up the situation nicely…  “In recent months we have once again seen photographers come into the firing line on social media platforms regarding what some people see as unethical / conservation issues which are completely unfounded statements or are rather based on personal opinion rather than based on fact. Some of these being the ongoing bashing of photographers for the use of spotlights and flashes on nocturnal animals, which is said to blind and disable them, a statement that is complete nonsense…   Please people, let's rather look at all the good that photographers do for conservation through various efforts around the world… the point is, lets focus on real issues rather than seeking attention with biased and personal opinions”.  https://www.kruger-2-kalahari.com Hashtags #Kruger2Kalahari #NaturePhotography  #WildlifePhotography #PhotoSafari  #nikonwildlife  #knp  #madikwegamereserve #madikwephotography #madikwesafari #madikwe #travelphotographer  #selfdrivesafari  #bigfivesafari #nocturnalphotography #nightphotography #flashphotography #leopard #big5 #bigcats #sofasafari #spotlight (at Madikwe Game Reserve) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpC-5hAKr56/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
