"Although Athene's intimate connections with women are often unnoticed, to disregard them is to identify her with an exclusive bonding with men that is (as the reference to Penelope and Nausicaa suggests) foreign to her. How easily we are pulled to overlook this, to pull her into our struggle with male identification, to project onto her our ambivalence about women bonding with women. Grief stricken, she made a wooden image of Pallas which was at first set up on Olympus and later placed in the heart of the citadel of Troy, (Eventually the word "palladium" comes to refer to any statue of Athene in her aspect of protectress of the polis.) After the death of her friend, Athene becomes Pallas Athene. Pallas is more than an epithet or an attribute; as Guthrie says, "The one is her name as much as the other." Though it may be that originally Pallas was a warrior goddess among the invading Greeks who was then united with the Athene of Mycenean times, in classical Greece Athene is Pallas Athene. The double name suggests her two-sidedness: she is a goddess who has own anima, who is spirit and soul.

"'Pallas,' so Kerenyi tells us, is a word for maiden but not just an equivalent of 'Kore', it suggests a robust, fierce maidenliness. 'A distinct masculinity seems to adhere to this word even in its feminine form.' Kerenyi sees the term as referring to Athene's "androgyny," the androgyny celebrated in the Orphic hymn to Athene where she is described as 'male and female, begetter of war, counselor, she-dragon of many shapes.' I, on the other hand, see androgyny as misrepresenting the inner meaning of Athene's being Pallas Athene. Perhaps the whole point of Pallas Athene is to help us transcend the facile equation of strength and courage and worldly wisdom with masculinity irrespective of the gender of the bearer of these attributes. I see Pallas's strength and independence as precisely womanly, related to her being a virgin in the sense made familiar by Esther Harding: in-one-selfness. (The emphasis on her virginity is confirmed by the festival of the Plynteria at Athens during which the palladium is annually taken to be bathed and thus to have its virginity renewed—as Hera's is renewed at Kanathos.) I am impressed that it is Zeus who is responsible for Achene's killing Pallas (and later for the palladium being thrown from Olympus). Zeus, watching the two maidens playing, becomes fearful that Pallas is about to strike his daughter, and so interposes his aegis. Pallas, startled, looks away, and is fatally wounded by her friend. It was thus his masculine misinterpretation of their assertiveness as aggression, their rivalry as destructive, that caused the death of the feminine Pallas.

"The assumption which equates such courage and self-sufficiency as Pallas represents with the masculine is deeply embedded. It probably underlies the fact that the other Pallantes associated with Athene are all male. There is, for instance, a Pallas whom she kills in the Olympians' war against the giants, and out of whose skin she makes a shield; an Arcadian Pallas who is her teacher and the father of Nike, one of her own manifestations; and a Pallas who, in a variant account of her birth, is her father, a father who tries to rape her, whom she kills, and whose skin she again wraps around herself. In each case she takes their power and their name; in these version it is an explicitly masculine side of herself that is represented by her Pallas aspect. She has become Pallas Athene through (in clinical terms) an 'introjection of the father' (or of a father surrogate). This denies that both names, Athene and Pallas, refer to feminine ways of being in the world.

"Those variants confirm that Athene's relationships to women and to her own femininity are mostly hidden and need to be uncovered by careful research and interpretation. Athene, in a sense, represents just this: the repression of the feminine and the undoing of the repression as a soul task. Really to understand Athene demands a courageous examination of our own participation in misogynous self-denial. To recover the Athene who is mothered by Metis and not only fathered by Zeus is to recover ourselves. We need to begin by recognizing that Athene's separation from her mother is not hers alone, and that we delude ourselves about ourselves if we self-righteously condemn her for it. To get to the Athene who can connect us to a fuller sense of what creative womanhood may encompass than our culture's pieties comprehend means beginning with the father and with the myth that Athene begins with the father. As usual we can only start with the most familiar features of a mythologem and, by reflecting on them, discover their unfamiliarity and strangeness, their prehistory. As L. R. Farnell noted almost a hundred years ago, Athene’s character became 'deeper and more manifold' the longer she was worshipped—a truth whose pertinence I have only recently come to appreciate."

Ill try to list them in order of like, my first OC to my most recent OC's

Jinx first!!!

Jinx was once turned into a cat by the villains, and Jinx was pretty chill about it really, they loved knocking stuff over at the villain base, and since the villains thought they was just turned into a cat, no JInx inside, they just assumed it was normal cat behavior

Jinx is a magpie, like they LOVE shiny stuff, like, once, the heroes and villains were fighting over an ancient artifact, who gets it, the heroes want it so that they know the villains cant abuse it, and the villains want it for power, and then Jinx just ups and steals it just cause its shiny

Jinx has a twin brother Aegis, hes the opposite of Jinx, a hero, no-nonsense, his powers is to create shields, i made him after i made Jinx, but using the base i made for Jinx

Aegis is Bisexual and up for poly btw (i even thought about making him date the leader of the heroes and the leader of the villains just for the shits and giggles,)

Jinx lives with their brother (Aegis is older by 2 minutes ["best 2 minutes of my life" lol], cause their parents kicked Jinx out at 18, and Aegis was disgusted by that, so he lived with Jinx

Jinx didnt get much attention as a child, so that's why they're what they're like today, he has flair, a loud voice, just so that they get attention,

also, Jinx had to mostly fend for themself as a child, and they were given almost no supervision, since their parents gave Aegis more attention and training, believing that AEgis was more fit to be a superhero, so Jinx could do whatever, really, so they ate a lot of candy, thus giving themselves a sweet tooth. This is also why Jinx is childish, they wasn't allowed to be a child back then so their allowing themselves to be a child

Also, im starting to wonder if Jinx does have a label on what side they're on, like, anti-heroes, to my research, do bad things for good. Anti-villains do good things for bad stuff, so I don't know if Jinx does have a side, cause they just do their own thing, sometimes joining the villains, sometimes joining the heroes, sometimes being an annoyance to both, so like, they're undecided i guess?? (Kinda like they're gender, it switches lol) Lemme look something up real quick...i guess JInx is like a rogue?

Also, Jinx, having no side, maybe has a lair of their own, a small one though, I've been thinking maybe a candy shop? Like, there's a basement of operations down there, and there's a candy shop up top?

Also, Jinx is Chaotic Lawful (or lawful chaotic), where they have a moral code, no one knows what it is though, but thank goodness its there

At first, i wanted to make Jinx have a double life as Casey, but then the more i thought about casey and their stories, it kinda spiraled into casey becoming their own character,

Now, onto Casey!!! Doing this cause he inspired a TON of characters

Caseys a trans man (aka ftm,), and has transitioned now.

He's a tired photographer and journalist (online), goes to college, engineering, he lives with his brother, Ryan Thompson (or Velocity as his hero name), also lives with his brother

Casey is Ryans adopted little brother, Caseys parents are Lady Luck and Mr. Misfortune (idk if i should give him siblings he was separated from)

So pretty much Casey has terrible and Amazing luck, they don't cancel each other out

This is pretty much where chaos happens around casey, but casey somehow gets out unharmed, which is great for his Photography and Journalism blog cause he usually stumbles into super fights!

Also, Caseys like, the go-to kidnapping victim for the villains, where they kidnap him a lot (they don't hurt him, cause i think I'm leaning more into comedy in my world ), and the heroes save him a lot, this led to him knowing a lot about both sides, also, once, Casey got out of his binds when the villains kidnapped him and left him, and instead of escaping, he takes pictures of the lair first, and gets out, and then proceeded to post the pictures and compliment the villain's style.

Also, Casey usually doesnt talk, mostly to people he doesn't know that much, if he's with Ryan or anyone he's really comfortable with, he will not shut up, showing them pictures, stuff he made using engineering, etc.

Also, every character inspired by Casey (like, they first started out as, haha, what if Casey was ___) has a white streak on their hair, so if you see an OC of mine with a white streak, you know what that means!

Now, Dr. Wilde!!

As you know, Dr. Wilde is a crazy scientist!

Dr. Wilde allows Lumi to call him Ezra (at first Lumi called him Dr. Ezra, but as they got more close Lumi started to call him Ezra, like a friend)

Casey has interviewed Dr. Wilde at some point, and even took pictures of his lab, and Casey has taken care of Tar once (picturing Tar and uploading to the internet how weird the rat is, and that once, the rat got in the oven while Casey was baking and it somehow survived)

Dr. Wilde has dyed Tar's fur a bit (haven't decided what color yet), just so that he can differentiate between the lab rats and Tar

Dr. Wilde's lab is right next to his room (which is like a house, having a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, etc.),

Dr. Wilde rarely leaves his lab / room, as he isn't really interested in the outside world, and when he does leave, he brings Tar with him, and Tar is just perched over Dr. Wilde's shoulder

Dr. Wilde is pretty short, compared to other villains (i should make a height chart actually), where the villains tower over him

Dr. Wilde has green eyes, also, if you look at him, he WILL stare into your soul, no one has ever seen him blink,

Now, Onto Darian Knight / Eclipse!!

As you can see, Darian is inspired by casey,

Darian, at first, joined the heroes to spite his dad, who was a villain back then, but after a while, he did come to like being a hero

Darian joined when he was 18, and he's surprised people still think he's a villain

Solar Flare and Casey are the few people who believe he's a genuine hero, Solar Flare cause he's worked with Darian long enough to know he's being genuine, and Casey cause he interviewed anough people to know whats a lie and whats not, Lumi also knows Casey isn't a villain

Sunny Knight / Lumi!!

He joined the villains at 19, about the same time as Darian,

At home with their parents, Sunny and Darian are more civil, more sibling-like,

In the battlefield, Sunny and Darian try to incapacitate each other than hurt, since, yknow, they're siblings. But they don't fight in the battlefield much, since sometimes Sunny and Darian converse, and the hereos and villains think that Sunny and Darian are teaming up and switching sides (Darian to villains and Sunny to heroes),

Also, Lumi joined the villains just because he could, and it looked fun

i dont have much on newer OC's lol, since i havent fleshed them out much lol

I also have a few more OC's i haven't talked about / fleshed out that much, like they're just an idea, but not a person yet.

Viz:

Theyre a hero with high anxiety, but despite having anxiety, and knowing he would get attention, interviews, etc. He still decides to be a hero, since to him, its the right thing to do. I still haven't showed them yet cause 1. i haven't drawn them yet, 2. with anxiety like them, i want to make sure i represent them well and make them realistic and that i don't make them like a stereotype

Starlight / Adrian Celeste:

Hes a self absorbed egocentric hero, and he's vain, he's kinda a joke hero i thought about, where like, he's self absorbed to the point its funny, hes still nice though, he doesn't show it much though, since he doesn't want to seem vulnerable and stuff. a simple backstory I thought about is that he was put down back then when he was young, so to make himself more confident, he started to compliment himself, and other stuff, but then it quickly spiraled put of control, and now hes like this. He also carries a mirror with himself at all times, just to admire himself, and his mirror in his room has sticky note surrounding where his face would be, and it says "perfect" "amazing" etc. also, he can glow, heal, teleport, and kinda has the ability to see the future (in like a vague way, like, he sees the stars and can sense something in the future, but its just really vague)

Jester / R.J. Santos: (Civilian name im not sure on yet)

Theyre a villain, a non serious villain, think like a cartoon villain, a goofy villain, they dont do any harm, just there to have fun. they also wanted to name themselves Jester Jinx, but since Jinx already had the name, they were okay with going with just Jester. Also, he's filipino. Also, he cares for young heroes (being an impromptu dad himself [long story where a kid of a hero wanted to be a villain, but the parent wanted them to be a hero, so the kid ran away, and got to casey, and casey took care of them and helped them be a villain {the kids, actually a teen, like 16, the teen is names Shadowstrike and their civilian name is Micheal, they hate the name by the way},]), and once, casey saw that the heroes were sending young heroes to his base to defeat him, and R.J. doesn't spot a singular a singular adult there, so he makes the young heroes (teens and even kids) sit down and stuff, and then he calls the heroes (he has their number cause they're usually on good terms), and yells at them over the phone for sending kids to a villain, and that they could've gotten hurt, and he gets so angry he starts shouting in filipino. Also! R.J. has a big family (based off my family), where his great grandma had 12 kids, and those kids (his grandparents and grand aunties and uncles) had kids (about 3 each), his aunties and uncles, and they have kids as well (about 3-5), his cousins and such, and his cousins had children as well, R.J. tries to remember them all by name, but its pretty hard, cause like, he has about

Polyphemus by Avi Kapach

Overview

Polyphemus was the son of Poseidon and Thoosa and the most feared of the Sicilian Cyclopes—brutish, one-eyed shepherds who lived far from civilization. He is best known for his role in the myth of Odysseus’ wanderings. When Odysseus stopped at the island of the Cyclopes on his way home from Troy, Polyphemus imprisoned him and his men; he undoubtedly would have eaten them all had Odysseus not blinded him and escaped. 

Later traditions imagined Polyphemus in a somewhat pathetic love triangle involving the beautiful Galatea.

Etymology

The name “Polyphemus” is fairly straightforward: it is made up of the Greek words polys, meaning “many,” and phēmē, meaning “voice.” Polyphemus is thus “the many-voiced one” or “the one much spoken of”—perhaps a reference to his famous role in the “much spoken of” Homeric epic, the Odyssey.

Titles and Epithets

In Homer’s Odyssey, Polyphemus is called by a handful of epithets, including pelōrios (“massive”), agrios (“wild”), and antitheos (both “godlike” and “enemy of the gods”).

Attributes and Iconography

Ancient sources classified Polyphemus as one of the Sicilian Cyclopes. This was to distinguish him (and his brethren) from the Uranian Cyclopes, most famous for fashioning Zeus’ thunderbolts.

The Odyssey gives a powerful description of Polyphemus as

a monstrous man…who shepherded his flocks alone and afar, and mingled not with others, but lived apart, with his heart set on lawlessness. For he was fashioned a wondrous monster, and was not like a man that lives by bread, but like a wooded peak of lofty mountains, which stands out to view alone, apart from the rest.

Polyphemus also performed impressive feats of strength. In the Odyssey, for example, he trapped Odysseus and his men in his cave by covering the entrance with a “great door-stone, a mighty rock” which “two and twenty stout four-wheeled wagons could not lift…from the ground.”

In ancient art, Polyphemus was represented much like other Cyclopes: with a giant body and one large eye set in his forehead (and, sometimes, with two horizontal slits where his other eyes would have been). Polyphemus’ showdown with Odysseus was a common subject for painters, potters, and sculptors from the very beginning, with the myth of Polyphemus and Galatea becoming popular later on.

Polyphemus and Odysseus

Polyphemus, the most powerful and savage of the Sicilian Cyclopes, is best remembered for his brutal behavior towards Odysseus.Driven by a dangerous combination of hunger, curiosity, and bad luck, Odysseus and his men landed on the island inhabited by Polyphemus on their way home from the Trojan War. Upon discovering Polyphemus’ cave, they were amazed at the size and quantity of the cheeses and farm animals kept inside and quickly made themselves at home.

When Polyphemus returned to his cave, however, he trapped Odysseus and his men inside and sneered at their request for hospitality. Odysseus tried to remind the Cyclops that the gods look kindly on those who treat foreigners gently, but Polyphemus responded with even more ridicule:

A fool art thou, stranger, or art come from afar, seeing that thou biddest me either to fear or to shun the gods. For the Cyclopes reck not of Zeus, who bears the aegis, nor of the blessed gods, since verily we are better far than they.

Having thus revealed his complete and utter disregard for the gods, Polyphemus seized two of Odysseus’ men, “dashed [them] to the earth like puppies,” and ate them. He then kept the men trapped in his cave—he closed off the entrance with a huge boulder that only he could move—and continued to pick them off at his leisure. 

Odysseus, however, devised a cunning escape. He and his remaining men sharpened a large log that they found in the cave, then proceeded to get Polyphemus drunk on wine. After the Cyclops fell asleep, the men drove the sharpened stake into his one eye. 

The next morning, Polyphemus opened the cave to pasture his sheep. Blind but eager to retain his prisoners, he carefully positioned himself in the middle of the exit and felt the backs of his sheep as they passed to make sure Odysseus and his men were not slipping away. But Odysseus once again outsmarted the Cyclops: he fastened himself and his men underneath the bellies of Polyphemus’ giant sheep so as to avoid his grasp.

Once Odysseus was back on his ship, however, he could not resist taunting Polyphemus. The Cyclops responded by launching a massive boulder at the ship, sending up a wave that nearly sank Odysseus and his men. Egged on, Odysseus cried out again:

Cyclops, if any one of mortal men shall ask thee about the shameful blinding of thine eye, say that Odysseus, the sacker of cities, blinded it, even the son of Laertes, whose home is in Ithaca.

In later sources for the story, Galatea sometimes had her own lover, Acis, whom Polyphemus killed in a jealous rage. But in even later versions, Polyphemus did win Galatea in the end and even made her his wife.

Pop Culture

Polyphemus has regularly featured in modern pop culture adaptations of the myth of Odysseus, such as the 1955 film Ulysses and the 1997 miniseries The Odyssey.

Aphrodite’s dark side | Epithets

Evidence of a cult of a warrior and dark Aphrodite has been widely studied. Aphrodite had been depicted with armor and prayed to for martial assistance in many places from Syria, to Corinth, Sparta, Argos, the Attika, Kypris, Rome, Naxos, and many, many, other places (but mainly Sparta. Surprising, no?). The cult of a warrior Aphrodite has been suspected to have emerged from Aphrodite’s “ancestral” correspondents like Istar or Astarte, who were both goddesses of sex and war. However, the evidence of a dark face of Aphrodite is there, and it can be too called upon today, even if it wasn't as popular as her holy and hevenly aspects.

Enoplios — weapon bearing

This is an epithet of Aphrodite attested by Plutarch, and is also epigraphically present in the Roman period. In the third century AD a priestess, Ponponia Kallistoneiké, set up a dedication to Artemis Ortheia in Lakonia attesting one of her fellow deities was Aphrodite Enoplios.

Summakhia — ally in war

Pausanias finds a cult of Aphrodite “ally in war” in Arkadia. This is all the comment I could find about it.

Nikephoros — victory bearer

In Argos, according to Pausanias, Aphrodite wore the epithet “victory-bearer”. Icons of Nikephoros and Hoplismene (armed) Aphrodite have been also attested in Syria and Eretria.

Areia — of Ares / war-like

At Sparta mainly, there is a lot of evidence of icons portraying an armed Aphrodite with inscriptions of this epithet. Pausanias tells us of one in a temple behind the Bronze House of Athena. There is another female wearing a peplos, a helmet and a spear, but without the aegis that characterizes Athena, thus many suspect it belongs to an armed Aphrodite.

HOWEVER Leonidas of Tarentum writes in the third century: “Eurotas once said to Kypris (Aphrodite), ‘Either take up arms, or quit Sparta, the polis mad for arms.’ She, laughing, replied, ‘I shall be ever unarmed.’ She said ‘and I shall dwell in Lakedaimonia.’ Our Kypris is unarmed. Shameful are those tale-tellers who say that our goddess bears arms!��

BUT from Antipater of Sidon, in the first century, there is a contradiction: “Even Kypris is Spartan. She is not dressed as in other towns in soft garments; But in full-force she has a helmet instead of a veil, instead of golden branches a spear-shaft. For it is not proper for her to be without arms, the consort of Thracian Enyalios (Ares) and a Lakedaimonian.” And this is not the only record we have of an actual Aphrodite wearing armor in Sparta; Plutarch, Nonnos, Julianus of Egypt and perhaps others tell us about the Spartan tendency to portray Aphrodite wearing an armor; either bow and quiver, spear and helmet, a shield, and even a sword. So perhaps Leonidas was either being sarcastic or lying (or the cult of Aphrodite Areia came after him, of course). This Epithet is thus related to Hoplismene. Julianus tells us that in the sanctuaries of armed Aphrodite girls revere her war-like nature and women give birth to courageous children.

Above all, Pausanias also claims that this Aphrodite was specifically worshipped as a female Ares. This gives us a clue whether this Aphrodite had been syncretized with Ares’ actual femenine counterpart, Enyo (Ares has an epithet related to her: Enyalios)

Androphonos — killer of men

This epithet is representative of her chthonic aspect. There is evidence of a sanctuary of hers and Aphrodite Anosia in Thessaly.

Anosia — the unholy

Aphrodite Anossia apparently was celebrated by women in Thessaly, and she is associated with homosexuality (although this is doubtful). Atheneus tells us a tale of a hetaira (courtesan) named Lais, that flee to Thessaly and fell in love with a man. A band of jealous women beat her to death at Aphrodite’s temple and thus the goddess in this temple became known as Anosia, the Unholy.

Tumborukhos — gravedigger

The Pythagoreans said there are two Aphrodites: one in heaven and one in the Underworld. Therefore she was called Tumborukhos as well.

Epitumbidia — she upon the graves

Couldn't find much information on this epithet either but it must be related to the previous one and representative of her Underworld connections.

Skotia — dark one

This epithet is referent of Aphrodite’s origins as a terrible goddess, and her associations with the planet venus, which were suppressed later by the pop cult (not the association with the planet, tho). This epithet appears to link her to the Erynies and Hekate, and may be referent of a “witch-star” (kakkab kassaptu in ancient Babylonian) nature. The lack of evidence for these type of epithets points at an unpopularity of them. It is important to highlight that some of them could be use against the goddess to give her a bad or “demonic” reputation in the christian sense so I suspect their suppression might have a relation to that.

Melanis — black

Related to the previous epithet. It appears that these “dark” and “unholy” aspects of her are related to the planet venus, as points her Ouraneia (“heavenly”) epithet as well. Venus was known as a “star of lamentation”.

Persephaessa — Queen of the Underworld

This epithet appears to be a syncretism between Aphrodite and Persephone. This is obviously mainly an epithet of Persephone. I could not find evidence for it being used to Aphrodite in the ancient world, just commentaries about it; however, by searching it on google you find an archeological source of it but sadly its written in german, and I have no idea how to read german.

Hoplismene — armed

Pausanias tells us about the sanctuary of Aphrodite at Kythera, saying that there “the goddess herself is an armed xoanon”. The xoanon were archaic wooden icons, and this one, according to Pausanias, was wearing an armor. Quintilian once asked why the Lakedaimonians (Spartans) have an armed Aphrodite, and Plutarch said that they like to portray every god in armor to show that all of them have excellence in warfare. This Aphrodite is present in Corinth as well.

Hegemone — leader (of the troops)

This Epithet of Aphrodite is found in the Athenian Agora, and their border fortress at Rhamnous. The city council also offered dedications to this Aphrodite. There are figures of her engaged in combat with the giant Mimos, and other portrays Aphrodite in a chariot wearing Athena's aegis (although it lacks the gorgon face), along with Poseidon. Hesikhios confirmed this epithet in the sixth century AD saying it applies to Artemis as well. This Aphrodite was also offered sacrifices with Themis and Nemesis, in honor of Aeneas, her son.

Strateia — campaigner

In the Hellenistic period, Aphrodite was called Strateia in western Asia Minor. There is an inscription from Mylasa refers to a priest of Aphrodite Strateia, and a calendar of offerings specifies sacrificing to Aphrodite Strateia along with Arete and Herakles. In Paros and Epiros, strategoi (military generals) are known to have sacrificed to Aphrodite, along with other deities.

Enkheios — spear-bearer

Hesikhios, an author from the 6th century AD, tells us about a terracotta Aphrodite in Cyprus depicted holding a helmet in one hand, a spear, and a shield leaning against one of her legs.

Conclusions

Can we use these aspects of Aphrodite even if they have been exaggerated and weren't actually very much present in ancient cult? Of course. Because worship changes and evolves, if you find one of these epithets symbolic in your life and devotion, you can totally use them and even give them a different dimension. As a witch, for example, I could use the dark and unholy epithets of Aphrodite as a symbol of how witchcraft has been regarded as evil in superstition and a reminder of the persecution women have gone through, and it would be an act of devotion to the Goddess and an act of empowerment. The unpopularity of many of these epithets is also representative of stigma against women and thus using them today could be attested as an act of rebellion.

General Opinion over said character: mythra is up there for being one of the best written women in a recent game for me? i think her struggles with what shes been through and seen making her literally create an idealized version of herself (who is still flawed and imperfect) is such an interesting story even if its hindered by how fucking awful her model/design can be at times and the fact two of her first scenes are being weirdo tsundere anime girl trope. that part sucks. but anyways shes still really well written most of the time and i love her arc when you look at how she was at the start of torna through to the end of xc2 proper

venti is like... im waiting to see what exactly he did during the fall of khaenri'ah before solidifying any proper thoughts i have on him if that makes sense? the seven are hiding so much i feel like i cant make a judgement call about them until we get more info (i say as if zhongli isnt one of my favorite characters, but i Understand him a lot more than i do venti). i think that the fandom is sooooo wrong about him hes a sad old man who has lost so much and drinks to comfort himself and i think the grief and loss that echoes throughout his story quest is his best trait. also 100% believe that he agreed to losing his gnosis and that it was all a big act that it was being stolen from him, if that doesnt end up being canon im gonna be really disapointed

azura is the backbone the glue the everything that tries to holds fates' flimsy story together and i think she mostly does a great job for what shes got. i love love love how she has had two families that never actually loved her like a real family should and i think its neat that she eventually gets to find that kinship through corrin. i love her softness while she is still highly determined and sharp witted. when i first played i really related to how she felt the need to put the burdens of the world on her shoulders even if it (literally!) killed her. she really pulls off the princess from a fallen/destroyed kingdom thing with how well her writing balances the sadness and loneliness she's lived with for so long with how she is still a girl who is alive and has joy even if she forgets it sometimes. her scary stories she tells to sakura and her love of sleeping on a fluffy kitsune tail all humanize her and give her a depth a lot of the fates cast is missing. we love her we stan.

morality alignment?: Neutral I guess? Her family does work with the underground groups such as the black market, the mafia, and triads. It’s a necessity. They attract most of the demonic attention, and the family needs the connection for birth certificates and the likes. The government knows a bit about them and is frankly scared of them, mistakenly believing they hold all the power over all of the underground crime scene because “when something goes wrong down there, the King Family cleans it up.”

sins - lust, pride, envy. The devil traits manifested in her are succubus traits, so bodily pleasures are something of a necessity for her. Her entire family runs on pride, and she envies people who can live freely, because as a part-devil she cannot mingle normally.

virtues - charity, kindness, justice. Though much of their wealth comes from “dubious” means... as in, charging underground bosses exorbitant amounts to clean up demon messes, she is still charitable with it. Just not in a lot of actual charity, because her family is careful about where they leave their marks. She likes to give gifts, especially with food, because she hates to see people go hungry. Much of that has to do with her kindness, too, and in her own way, it is a form of justice. When she travels, she known to visit homeless shelters or soup kitchens and drop off a ton of groceries. (And there was the one time she paid off Dante’s pizza tab and left extra money for him for food.)

introvert/extrovert: more on the introverted side, though she is not opposed to interacting with people. She’s a learned introvert because she has to hide who she is.

organized/disorganized: organized but not to a fault. Her demands for others is usually “no tripping hazards” and “don’t leave food out where it can fester” but otherwise just be mindful of your stuff.

close minded/open-minded: I would say she’s open minded. She’s especially open minded about sex.

calm/anxious: easily anxious, her anxiety is the number one thing that made her doubt Dante would like to hear from her about her pregnancy, and she spent the next two decades never contacting him, thinking she didn’t deserve him anyway.

disagreeable/agreeable: a very agreeable person, especially towards people she loves. She has her moments of stubbornness though.

cautious/reckless: being an ambusher, she leans more towards cautious.

patient/impatient: patient, as with her nature as an ambusher.

A statement I wish I didn’t have to make

As of today, I am no longer associating in a personal or professional capacity with @creationsoutofe, otherwise known as Eden. Someone whom I valued as a family member, had helped them out and saved their life more times than I care to count. When I first met them, they were in a very rough spot. They had FNGR (ForNoGoodReason) and his white knights harassing and abusing them for being out of the relationship, and they gave me a bunch of videos to comb through of his that were said to show the terrible things about them in them. I diligently helped them, helping to write and proofread scripts on the scripts they were going to write and even being a moderator in a video when they were talking with a few people. Also reviewed the roleplay of them being underage characters when Eden showed me saying it was a sign of him abusing them and forcing them to do it. We slowly developed a strong, almost sibling friendship. I even helped them get a new phone and gave some money when they needed rent when their dick neighbor moved out. Eventually, they got harassed more and more and somehow....started talking with ForNoGoodReason again. These actions confused me, why would someone who wanted to get away so badly, who had everything going right for them, run right back? It confused me, but they convinced me (sadly) that he had changed and he was going to respect them and be a righteous person. That did not last long. They kept saying how he would be so kind to them, but also be so cold to them. This confusion went on for months. I was so worried for them, because they had no offline support, were suicidal on more than one occasion and would not go to the mental ward because it could mean losing the house even though they needed it. Eventually, they did finally get in contact with their mother and moved back home. It was a lovely celebratory time; they were free from the hell they were in....right into limbo. They made their "peace" with FNGR, and despite everything that they had shown to the contrary, they said that he did not abuse them. Remember that roleplay, if they were not abused, that means they enjoyed it. Enjoyed a roleplay about being sexual as an underage character. Strike one. Time passed, and I eventually came into re-contact with an old friend. Aegis. This person, we had roleplayed a fair bit earlier and decided to do it again. We started talking beyond it, and we started dating with my two other partners (I'm poly BTW). Eventually, there came concerns that they had posted underage artwork. The most "damning" piece of evidence was a picture of Breath of the Wild Link in a very lewd and naked pose. Which the artist, when Aegis had gotten it a long time ago, claimed to be over 18, even asked the artist himself at the time if it was over 18, but when they went back, the artist was gone for lying about the age of his artwork. All of us saw it as OK; the artist lied about his art, no big deal...WRONG. Eden decided that we needed to go through ALL of Aegis' lewd pictures to "make sure there was not anymore." So, me, my partner Andy, Eden, and eventually a third party named H8ful went through Aegis' computer late into the night and while Eden eventually had to leave partway through due to commitments the next day, we ultimately all concluded that it was an honest mistake, and done in by a lying artist because there was nothing else of the sort. Eden went on Twitter the next morning, even after we told them we found nothing else incriminating and lied about Aegis being into the kind of thing. They had to be told point blank that that was dishonest and straight libel because we went through their computer and checked everything and confirmed there was nothing of the sort. You do not attack one of my partners with lies, especially ones from a glass house- strike two. Finally, we had had enough, me, my partners and a mutual friend who will not be named, sat them down and said we were concerned about them and their continuing to associate with FNGR. They said they would talk to him and the therapist they saw at the time. The therapist said having FNGR in their life was a good thing. Also, that they should not cut them out of their life because it would cause ANXIETY. I lost it. As you may know, I suffer from genetic depression, and it flares up — especially around stressful things. I had been dealing with work being stressful due to my contract just being up, my mother being cut out of my life, the stuff that had already happened and this was the last straw, and I did something I am not proud of, I self-harmed. I cut with a razor down my thigh — surface level, not enough to leave anything more than small cit that bled. However, I realized this was not healthy, and I also realized that FNGR was a stressor for me that I could remove. I asked Eden to not talk about him because it was causing me too much stress and that I self-harmed. They took it to mean I cut because of FNGR and that was the only reason, and that was toxic. I was so confused; I had explained to them that hearing about him was a stressor so please stop, not that he was why I cut. Eventually, sadly Eden unfriended me and said I needed to get help before they would friend me back. I thought OK, I can go through Pride Counselling; it is an application I have used before that matches you with a therapist who has years of experience and tailored for you. For a few, you can have unlimited text conversations and as many video calls as needed. I thought that was perfect. There are no local options for trans people who do not treat you like an experiment, and the hospital has a walk-in therapy that does not even keep a file on you. No, none of that was good enough, for the sin of self-harming they demanded I go to the mental ward. The psychiatric ward. The place where, where I live, let me have a razor in a bathroom alone when I was suicidal and had sharp utensils freely. Even if I was actively suicidal, that is the LAST place I should be. All they had to say about that was "Rules change." Rules change? They have the same therapists and employees from when I was there for actively being suicidal. I am not suicidal, so I have no reason to be there, especially when I have a job with benefits that cover my over 1000 dollar a month drug prescriptions to keep my genetic depression in check and transition going. If I went there, I would lose all that, point blank. Eden did not care and saw the actual helpful option and me putting my foot down as "being pissy," this even though I had Andy, my partner, review my plan for therapy and say "This is a major step forward for you. I am proud of you". You try to dictate my path to my own recovery and hold our friendship hostage? - Strike Three I sincerely wish the best for them, but they need to take a good look in the mirror and see their flaws. Eden, you were, and still are, a sibling to me. I wish for the best...and try not to do anymore roleplays...your glass house and hard moral stance couldn't take it.

Okay, I understand this is extremely not the focus of the Butterscotch stories, which I read and love— but, in that AU, what is the relationship configuration of the Caramel, Hazelnut, Vanilla, and Sugarfree Vanilla Jacks? It’s such a cute background detail, and it really charms me that all of them, especially Sugarfree Vanilla, are under Caramel Jack’s coffee aegis.

Thanks for the question! I have a lot of background details worked out in Butterscotch that haven’t come up in the main narrative yet, so I’m really happy to get the chance to talk about htem :)

Regarding the names: ‘Caramel Jack’ is a riff on Calico Jack. Silver refers to all of them as Jack, because Rackham’s the one that fetches the coffee under his own name. The coffees would be labeled ‘[Syrup] Jack’ to differentiate them, and Silver refers to the characters by their coffee orders, not their names. I figured at some point in the past Vane (who I definitely think is the type to order sugary drinks sugarfree) was part of Rackham’s group order, before Rackham and Anne started working for Max. 

The relationship configuration is roughly like the show, but nicer (‘roughly like the show but nicer’ is the general thesis of Butterscotch). Max, Anne, and Rackham (Hazelnut, Vanilla, Caramel) are poly, although in this AU Jack was more enthusiastic about Anne initiating things with Max. Mark Read (Peppermint Jack) has been referred to in passing too: by NYE/Spun, Mark is a new partner in the relationship. So there’s some kind of poly quad arrangement where they all harmoniously work in the same company and love each other very much.
