The last bell of the year had rung out minutes before, and a swarm of students exiting the school followed. It was early June, and the endless blue sky and bright afternoon sun were already turning up the heat. Young teens gathered onto the buses, rode off on bikes, or set out on foot towards their first adventure of the next three months. The fresh scent of cut grass drifted through the air, while birds watched and sang. It was a picture-perfect view, a slice of youthful Americana.
The thirteen-year-old boy sitting in the detention hall stared out the window. His green eyes shifted upwards towards the clock turning on the wall in front of him. Aside from the teacher sitting at the desk, he was alone in the room.
Trent sighed to himself, softly enough that the teacher couldn't hear him. Of course he got himself into detention on the last day of school. Of course he was the only one to get detention on the last day of school. The principal had told him that he should be thankful that was all he got. On any other day, a fight with other students would have earned him at least a suspension.
That wasn't much of a comfort, considering Trent was the only one to get punished. Not the ones that were causing the problem in the first place though. The boys that had been bullying Trent and his friends for a year were jocks - and not run-of-the-mill jocks either. They were football stars in the making if one believed the coach. And football stars didn't get in trouble for beating the crap out of a kid smaller and weaker than them.
But Trent, who was not a jock, let alone a popular jock? He was the one stuck with a black eye, bruises, and scratches all over his skin, and detention was the icing on the cake. It was a wonder his friends - who had tried to break up the fight - weren't given detention as well.
Whose idea was it to have detention on the last day of school? It made no sense to him, unless needless cruelty was the point. It was embarrassing enough that the principal had to call his grandmother to let her know he would be home late. Now he was stuck at school for longer than anyone should ever be. All while the assholes who started it all were walking free and enjoying the start of their vacation.
He fingered the pages of his book. It was nothing special, a blatant Star Wars rip-off whose title wasn’t worth remembering. It was something he had failed time and time again to finish because of how boring it was, but he had nothing else to read. When he arrived in detention, with the teacher’s gaze icy cold as he took his seat, he tried reading the first page. Then he tried reading the first page again. And again. Trent had to stop himself from falling asleep. At this point, he would have been glad for homework. At least it would be something for his brain to do.
The bald teacher looked up to stare daggers at Trent, then went back to his newspaper. Mr. Roberts was both the P.E. teacher and the coach of the football team. For reasons they had yet to figure out, he had taken an instant dislike to Trent and his friends from the start of sixth grade. He made sure that they knew it too, singling them out for criticism during activities among the other students. Needless to say, the fight at lunch hadn't exactly put Trent in his good graces either.
Mr. Roberts turned a page in his newspaper, his breathing thunderous in the otherwise silent detention hall. No one liked going to detention as it was, but the detention hall made the experience even more unpleasant. It somehow managed to feel both sterile and dingy, with a sense of grime that no one could clean off. The chairs, which wobbled no matter what, were likely the same chairs Trent's parents used when they were his age. Each desk always had dried out, chewed up gum underneath that went back decades.
Trent bit the inside of his cheek, hard enough to nearly draw blood. Why won't it just end already? What kind of asshole put someone in after school detention on the last day of school for defending himself?
The door opened behind him, breaking the silence. He jerked his head away from the book and watched as a dark-haired girl awkwardly walked between the aisles of desks. She wore an immaculate white button up shirt, a denim overall skirt, and a pair of shiny black loafers so new they didn’t have a single crease yet.
"You're late," Mr. Roberts snarled. He lowered the newspaper to watch her as she took a seat behind Trent, then went back to reading in silence.
She didn't apologize for her lateness, only brushed a strand of hair out of her eyes.
Trent knew her. Well, he knew of her. She was one of the 'popular girls' that sat together during lunch and pep rallies to gossip and read fashion magazines. He never talked to those girls, no one in his group did. They were so different that they might as well have come from different planets.
He knew of her from outside of school, though he wouldn't say it. When Trent was in fifth grade, a family from California had moved into the house next to his grandparents. They decided to do the polite thing and give them a warm welcome to the neighborhood. Trent of course wanted to stay home and watch The Six Million Dollar Man marathon on TV, but he was powerless to stop them from dragging him over. The couple, the Maandigs, had invited them into their house full of boxes and furniture covered in plastic. His eyes kept glazing over the boxes, looking for something interesting - which there wasn't. He was about to fall asleep from his grandparents asking endless questions about living in California.
Loud, excited footsteps from the floor above him caught his attention. It was then that she had asked, in that girly high-pitched voice, "Mom, have you seen my pink sundress? It's not in any of my boxes." She ran down the stairs, somehow not tripping over herself, and tugged at her mother's sleeve. When she saw Trent standing on the porch with his grandparents, she froze.
Her eyes were wide and shy at the same time. "H-hi," She stammered.
Trent stared at her, squinting. What a weird girl…"Um, hi."
They hadn't spoken to each other since that day. But he had noticed her, here and there. Saw her in the rare classes they had together. They never spoke, never interacted. But every time he saw her, he couldn't help but…
He took a single glance back at her, hoping she wouldn't notice. She was staring at the wall in boredom, but when she caught him looking at her, she smiled.
…why was his face feeling warm?
Trent quickly tried to go back to his book, completely in vain. The stupid book was unreadable - how the hell did it even get published? What a waste of trees and ink.
The phone on Mr. Roberts' desk rang, and he picked it up. "Yeah?" There was a pause. Then a deep grimace on his face. "Alright, I'll be right there." He hung up the phone and gave both students a judgmental eye. "You two stay put. I was just told some brats are vandalizing my car. When I get my hands on them…"
Getting out of his chair, Mr. Roberts dug out his keys from his pants pocket and pointed his finger at Trent and the girl. "If I find out either of you left while I was gone, there will be hell to pay."
Neither spoke up. When Mr. Roberts left, slamming the door behind him, Trent once again tried to get back to his book. He flipped through the pages - there had to be something more interesting in the middle. Anything more interesting than the first page.
"Psst."
Something was poking him in the shoulder. He turned around in his seat and came face to face with Mariqueen Maandig.
She was smiling, her mouth covered in a rosy gloss. "What are you in for?"
A weird feeling came over him. Was she bored like him? Bored enough to talk to a kid that she wouldn't give the time of day to under normal circumstances?
She really was weird.
He shrugged. "Got in a fight with some assholes during lunch. What did you do?"
She shrugged back, a more sheepish look on her face. "I did something, really, really stupid."
"Can't be that stupid."
"You know that shed on the far side of the football field? I was smoking behind it."
Before Trent could think, he blurted out, "You're right, that is pretty stupid." A chill ran up his spine - who says that to a girl? Did he want her to think was some kind of jerk?
But Mariqueen didn't seem mad at him for that. She stared at him, then burst out laughing, before abruptly going sour. "My friends were supposed to meet me during lunch. But they were taking forever, and I kinda got bored waiting...Then Mrs. Bradshaw caught me." She threw her hands up. "I guess it's whatever, you know?"
"I guess. Still kinda sucks though."
“You ever smoked before?” She asked.
There was a pause. Yes, Trent had smoked pot. He had gone to visit his dad in Portland a few weeks ago for a late birthday visit, and he had a very ‘special’ present to give Trent. Trent however very quickly realized that him and pot weren’t going to work out, and woke up the next day with a pounding headache. His dad told him he’d get around to it one of these days - Trent didn’t believe him.
But it wasn’t like Mariqueen had to know that part, right?
“Yeah…yeah, I totally smoke.” He quickly added, “Like...a lot.”
She stared at him, clearly unconvinced. Before he could continue his - not very good - lie, Trent winced in pain. He brushed his fingertips against his still-fresh black eye.
Mariqueen narrowed her eyes to his injuries. "Did you get beaten up by the football team or something?"
"Half the team, yeah." When her eyes widened, he said, "I mean, you should see the other guys."
Poundpoundpound.
The noise drew Trent away from her, towards the line of windows on the far side of the room. He grinned - on the other side of the glass was Robin, waving his hand at Trent. Before Mariqueen could ask who that was, Trent sprinted out of his desk and lifted the window open.
Robin poked his head in. "The coast is clear. Let's get out of here before he gets bad." His eyes fell on Mariqueen, still at her desk. "What's she doing here?"
"What does it matter to you?" Trent muttered under his breath. "Wait, you guys vandalized the car? What the hell did you do?"
"I'll tell you later," Robin hastily said, motioning Trent towards him. "Come on, we don't have much time."
Trent returned to his desk and grabbed his backpack, but not the book (that could go into the garbage for all he cared). As he slung the bag over his shoulder, he looked at Mariqueen, sitting by herself. "Hey."
Her eyes lit up. "Yeah?"
"Wanna come with us?"
She bolted up from the desk with dizzying speed, backpack already on. Trent followed her closely behind. Robin slid the window higher for them, motioning for them again.
"Hurry."
Mariqueen went through, legs first. The ground was mere feet down from the window, allowing her to safely land on the green grass beneath her. When it was Trent's turn, he bent his torso into the windowsill.
As he was about to dive onto the grass, something caught hold of his shirt.
Mr. Roberts exhaled sharply behind him. "Where do you think you're going?"
"Shi-" In an instant, Trent was pulled back into the classroom by a great force. Soon he found himself face to scowling face with Mr. Roberts.
Trent's blood went cold. The grip around his shirt tightened.
Mr. Roberts exhaled hard. "I told you not to leave." His eyes glanced back at the windowsill, where he could still spot Robin and Mariqueen. He pointed at them with his other hand. "Don't think you two are getting out of here unscathed!"
Trent could do nothing but stare at Mr. Roberts' hand. His muscles froze even as Mr. Roberts dragged him towards the door.
"Alright you brat, you're not leaving my si-"
He pulled his hand away.
No.
Something pulled his hand away.
"What the hell?" His palm was open wide, his fingers spread to an uncomfortable degree. An invisible force seemed to keep the hand suspended in the air. Mr. Roberts tugged at it to get it to move - to no avail. Trent, his face paling, forced himself out of his stupor and ran straight for the window. Robin held his arms out for him, grabbing Trent the moment his torso was through the frame.
"Let's get the fuck out of here," Trent said when he hit the grass. "Now."
The three of them didn't look back as they ran. There was no time to mutter a single word, too busy getting out of range of a very, very pissed off teacher. There was no time for Trent to tell them what happened in the classroom. There was no time for him to even think about what had happened.
He gritted his teeth. It wasn't helping that there was an ache building in his forehead completely out of nowhere.

"You think Robin got him out?"
Richard threw the baseball back at Danny. At the bench, Tori sat with her chin propping up her knee, while her other hand tapped against her thigh. They were the only ones in the playground over eleven but under twenty-five. The rest of the playground was full of little kids on the slides, swings, and the jungle gym; their parents watched half-heartedly. Being a bunch of middle schoolers, the three of them stuck out like sore thumbs. Yet it was the first place they spotted that they could hide in, something loud and full of people. Exactly what they needed in a time like this.
They ran off school property as quickly as they could. Mr. Roberts had only caught a glimpse of them as they made their getaway, but it was enough. Without warning, he ran after them.
They threw the spray cans into a nearby dumpster and hoped that no one saw that Richard had his shoes covered in paint. They shoved themselves into the jungle gym, among the screaming children, and waited for Mr. Roberts to do his search and leave.
Luckily for them, they didn't have to wait very long. For all his demands of "Don't be a loser" in his class, he gave up without putting much effort into his search.
After that, there wasn't much more they could do. They still needed to wait for Robin and Trent, assuming they had escaped. Richard and Danny started playing catch with a discarded baseball. Tori's face twisted in worry.
"They're gonna be fine," Richard replied to her finally. "You worry about Trent too much, you know that?"
"I can't help it! He's so..." She snapped her fingers. "What's the word...?"
Danny piped up with, "Pathetic?" He threw the ball back at Richard.
"No."
"A dumbass?" The ball fumbled in Danny's grasp - Richard always had a poor throwing arm.
"True, but that wasn't what I was thinking of."
The ball was back in Richard's hand. "You never worry when me or Robin or Danny get in trouble." He reeled his arm in, gripping the ball. “I mean I worry about him too - a lot - but you worry even more than that.” With a swift swing, he threw the ball back in Danny's direction…
Hitting him square in the forehead.
"Motherfu-" Danny pressed both hands to his forehead and hissed. "You hit me!"
"Yeah, and?"
"It fucking hurts!"
"Aw, don't be a baby. It barely got you!”
"Fuck you!"
Still sitting on the bench, Tori rolled her eyes. "But you guys are guys. Trent's different."
Conveniently forgetting about his pain, Danny gave her a dumb, toothy smile. "Why? Because you wanna kiss him?" He teased.
Tori sneered. "Shut up, Danny."
"What are you arguing about now?" An exhausted-sounding voice exclaimed in the distance.
The three of them looked up, and their collective faces broke out into smiles. Walking towards them with the sun beaming down, an exhausted Robin dragged a moody Trent over. A third, unexpected figure followed closely behind them.
Tori shot up from the bench. "Finally, I thought you'd never make it!"
“He was this close to killing us,” Said Robin. He nudged Trent’s arm. “Trent barely managed to escape. somehow”
There was a glassy, lost look in Trent’s eyes for a second, before he blinked and shook his head. “Y- yeah. I did.”
“Thank God…at least our efforts didn’t go to waste,” Tori exhaled in relief. "So did you see what we did to Mr. Roberts' car? I wrote 'eat shit, fuckhead'."
"I was kinda too busy running away."
Danny threw his hands in the air. "Aw man, you should have seen it! I drew a huge dick on the windshield. Rich drew the balls."
“Big, hairy ones too,” Richard said with a satisfied laugh. “Let’s get outta here.I’m getting bored playing catch with Danny.”
Trent nodded. “Yeah. Hey, Mariqueen,” He turned around to face her, “Wanna come with us?”
Mariqueen looked nervously at him. “Um…”
“Mariqueen, there you are!”
A trio of girls, each more perfectly dressed than the last, approached them from behind Mariqueen. Trent didn’t know their names, but like Mariqueen he knew of them. The popular girls that she was always hanging around with. One of them, clad in a plaid skirt, grabbed Mariqueen’s hand.
Mariqueen pursed her lips. “Sorry. I have to go.”
“That’s fine.”
The girl in plaid tugged at Mariqueen’s hand. “Come on, Q! Lori’s stepmom is taking us shopping.”
“Just a sec!” Said Mariqueen, barely hiding her annoyance. She turned her attention back to him. “Um…I just wanna say-”
“Come on, you can talk with the loser later!”
With shocking strength, the girl yanked Mariqueen away from Trent and his friends. Together, the four of them rushed off the playground to places unseen. Trent found himself watching them - or really, watching her. With her dark hair and nice clothes and smile and-
Tori whispered into his ear, “You’re blushing.”
Trent felt like someone poured ice down his shirt. “Shut up, Myra! I’m not!”
The playful look on Tori’s face became glare. “Don’t you dare call me that, Michael.”
“Oh my god, he is blushing!” Richard ran over to him, grinning. “You look like an idiot.”
Trent’s face went redder. “Shut up!”
“Did you kiss her?” Danny crept up from behind, making kissing noises at Trent.
“I said shut uUUUUUUP!” Trent yelled just as Robin - who was already one of the tallest students in school - picked him up by the waist.
Robin laughed. “Come on, did you or didn’t you?”
“Put me down!” Trent screamed at the top of his lungs. “I swear I’ll kick your ass!”
“If you insist.”
With an audible thud, Trent fell to the ground. “Ow…”
“Hey man,” Robin said with a shrug. “You said you wanted down.”
“Whatever…” Pulling himself up, Trent shook his head. “What do you guys wanna do?”
“Don’t know,” Said Richard. “...You wanna go get ice cream?”
The other four nodded nonchalantly, and within minutes they had left the playground completely.
Going out for ice cream was far from the epic start to summer vacation that every child wished for - unless you're under twelve. Considering that Trent had been unfairly thrown into detention before that, it wasn’t even a good start to vacation. But it was a start, and they all had three whole months to make it the best vacation they possibly could make.
Couldn’t be that hard, right?

"The level is almost over. I need more time."
"You can save and play later."
"It won't take me long to beat it."
"You're lying."
"No I'm not."
"Yes you are!"
"No I'm not!"
"What on Earth are you boys arguing about down here?"
The two of them - Atticus sitting at the desk, Leopold standing cross armed in impatience - turned to face their mother. As she walked down the carpeted basement stairs, her eyes - still heavy from a lack of sleep - went back and forth between the two. Atticus' face went sheepish.
Mrs. Ross slumped her shoulders and pinched the bridge of her nose. "Atticus, dear, let your brother play now."
He swallowed. "But I-"
"No 'buts,' dear."
Atticus frowned but still opened the game's menu. After saving and pressing the 'Quit' option, a message appeared on the screen: 'Go ahead and leave. See if I care.' He raised an eyebrow - was the game mocking him for quitting?
"Alright, I'm finished," He said, getting out of the chair.
Leopold at once took a seat and started looking through the list of games Uncle Marcus had installed on the computer. He settled on Gabriel Knight, which neither of them had tried yet.
"I hope that game isn't too violent," Said Mrs. Ross, weariness in her voice. "I don't much like you boys playing those games your uncle gave you. Especially that...Doom game you keep playing, Atticus."
Without another word, Atticus joined his mother in climbing up the stairs. Digitized music spilled out of the computer's speakers as they left the basement.
When they reached the top of the stairs and entered the living room, his mother looked at him with tired eyes. She hadn’t gotten any sleep since they arrived a few days ago. "Why don't you play upstairs with your sister? I'm sure she wants a playmate now that she's so far away from all her friends."
A shrill shout "I don't want to play with Atticus!" rang out from elsewhere in the house. "He never wants to play with my dolls!"
Atticus' frown deepened and he shrugged. "I think I'll go play outside, Mum. I don't mind being alone."
She nodded. "It is a lovely day, isn't it? But-" she added, "Don't wander off too far from the house. Oh, and Aunt Iris will be here in a few hours with Uncle Marcus for dinner."
"Yes, mum."
When he found himself on the back porch, Atticus stood still. His face went blank in the realization that he had no idea what he was going to do now. It left him with the one thing he could do: think about why he was in America in the first place. The thing was, he wasn’t sure of the reason why. He wasn’t sure his parents knew why they decided to move there.
It was all so sudden. More sudden than he would prefer. All he knew was that his Aunt Iris had married an American man. An American man who owned quite a bit of property in a state called Oregon. And he believed that he had the best house in mind for his new sister-in-law's family.
All Atticus wanted to know was why they decided to go ahead with such a big move. When he asked his parents, they would shrug and say they wanted a "why not have a change in scenery?" Not a very satisfying answer, but he didn't push the issue. Atticus wasn't one to argue with his parents unless he needed to, and he didn’t feel that need then. It wasn't that the move was a bug issue for him either. He had never been happy at his old school, and he didn't have much in the way of friendships to mourn. But…he still couldn't quite put his finger on how he felt about it all.
His eyes scanned the backyard. The lawn lay before him wide and green, and the scent of cut grass was still fresh in the air. The patio furniture set next to him was empty, as was the rest of the yard. He had only been outside for a minute and the heat was already getting to him. Yet there was almost nothing for him back inside, not when his brother still had the computer.
He sighed. It was going to be a long, dull summer.

For our latest project, we're reviving a 2008 KTM 990 Adventure that's had a few hard knocks in life, including being swept down a river in Mexico. Our first task on the list after getting it running properly was to upgrade the 8.3 inches of suspension travel the standard model is equipped with. To ensure this 990 lives up to its Dakar-winning heritage, we got our hands on a set of forks and rear shock off an 'S model' with 10.4 inches of travel. This swap also requires a longer 'S-model' center stand and kickstand to accommodate the taller ride height. And while we were at it, we decided to change the fork oil, which hadn't been serviced in over a decade. What came out was a nasty chocolate milk color with barely any viscosity. We filled the forks with Motul synthetic 5W to give the front end that 'fresh from the factory' feel. More upgrades to come but with the chassis upgraded and the bike running mint, we can't wait to get it out on the trail for a quick rip!

A fun enough level for what it is. i always feel like, when i run into these old, straight-forward races, that they must have been a hoot multiplayer. You can still get a feel for it, but it's just not the same by yourself.

This is a cute little one. It's rare to run into one of the old Pitagora Switch levels that actually still run, tho' this one is probably saved by having no pistons in the mix. Even then, you can see some of the bigger dominos really struggling wiv momentum. i'm glad it all ran smooth in the end.

Those bikes were always so easy to turn turtle, weren't they? i don't know what was going on at the midpoint of the level, maybe if i had waited around longer an elevator would have dropped, but i figured it was broken, so i took the scenic route of "LBP1 players didn't know they'd eventually add 16layers to the game." i was lucky the scoreboard was on the floor. i've run into levels on stream where we could use that trick to get around a break, but the scoreboard was up someplace we couldn't access anymore. i think it's kind of cute i'm the only person who beat this level. Like, even the creator said, "i dunno, it's kinda shite, tho'?" i didn't think it was shite, Snakeryder. Not, perhaps, particularly great, but i had my fun wiv it.

So... this one starts as a "save the kids, destroy the kindergarten" level, and it ends as an offroading, mountain climbing adventure(?). Really liked the 4WD, it was a neat little vehicle, and i'm wondering how they set up the suspension. The first half is definitely the stronger bit, a lot of little details, or at least as far as we could get from simple LBP1 techniques. It's fun enough, and worth a quick playthrough.

We talked about this one a little along wiv Vanilla Breeze last week, and it's still a neat, inventive, artistic, frustrating as heck piece of work. Like i love the presentation, and i dig what Kipmonlin was trying to pull off, but gods... just such a pain in the butt from almost start to finish. i wonder how this played natively in LBP2. i know the jump off paint technique doesn't quite work in LBP3 the way it did back then; but i don't think translation would account for things like how poorly the sackbots track you during the paint the targets bit. Still love the animated paint(? liquid? something?) bit. Like, that's just magical.

i wanted to like this one more than i ended up doing. Alpenglow02 does really good work, and there're some solid ideas here, but i feel like the presentation can get a bit confusing in what platforms you can actually interact wiv, and it's just a touch overbight. i really liked the sine wave platforms in concept, like, they're really cool to look at, but the longer section before the secret kirb was just miserable to try to time. i actually got to talk to Alpi some about that, and he did say that he struggles nailing proper difficulty at times, and that's a feeling i can definitely understand. That being said, the glowworms? Loved 'em. Neat effect, cute as heck, right level of challenge for the area. And the central mechanical conceit was a cool one that really added to the level. i feel like i've only seen folx go all in on that idea a couple of times, so it was really nice to see it here.

i am cursed by LBP1-era horrible gas. It is just the worst. i would have given this one more chance, but having to redo the entire slow section, just to get to a bit i could barely visibly read, get killed, and have to do it all over again? Like, i'm sorry, i really am, but i only have so much time to work wiv, and 14minutes was more than this one deserved. The submersible was nice, an interesting workaround to that kind of vehicle in LBP1, and i did dig on the eely enemies (even if they were a total pain in the bum to actually hit); but, yeah... this one really needed checkpoints.

A level that plays itself?! Naw dog, sorry, changes to physics and pistons makes this a level that throws you into spikes whether you touch the controller or not. i was disappointed, but it wasn't the creator's fault. Although, to be vaguely fair to Sumo, which is as much as i ever feel like doing, these kinds of levels tended to be fiddly even in their native state, and plenty of them wound up broken all on their own. Can't say for certain which is the case wiv this one.

i really wound up liking this one, even if i struggled wiv it at times. A really neat take on the Wedding theme, using a lot of the decorative and collected objects flourishes, but to its own ends. Really the best way these kinds of levels can end up. i'm going to have to go back to anrga7ightwish on one of our streams; i'd love to see if they have some other levels that'll click wiv me like this one did.

So, that's our TEN this go about. Some real nostalgic ones in there, and some very solid on-their-own standouts, and aside from the Minisub one, nothing i feel like i could walk away from and say i didn't enjoy at least something in them.
We're going into another really busy period here in meatspace. Well, kinda meatspace. i'm going to have to scramble after blowing through the entirety of a three week backlog on a mixture of a depression spiral (really bad) and gender clinic-ery (really good! But kind of annoying! But really good!). i want to try and rock up to the next clinic on Monday. Their website said there was no appointment necessary, which is good, because i couldn't get ahold of them by phone. i'd wanted to spend yesterday boning down (shut up, it doesn't mean that!) on some HRT specifics that i could talk to the doctor about. The scuttlebutt i've heard is Japan's not super great on what and how much they prescribe, and i want to be able to say to the doc "ok, but what about [X], [Y], and [Z]?" And not have to say, "[osmotically sourced, but ultimately vague, nimbus of knowledge from a dozen different conversations]" Like, i feel like specific details would help my case, but specific details are very much a sometimes treat when it comes to memory retention for me. i mean, even if i do get to talk to the doc, it won't be more than bloodwork, and initial talking points, but still. Here i am, i want to keep moving.

Adventures in Bike Commuting 12/12/2022 - in which I bike down to CVS, have a pleasant interaction with an old man, and then ride the [LOCAL TRAIL] home.
Today, I needed to get in-soles for my shoes for work because my back was killing me last night, after having stood on my feet for about 9 hours. So I decided to bike down to a CVS a few miles away. The way there I ended up taking the roads, since I couldn’t figure out how to tell my GPS to use the trails (I figured it out eventually). It was kind of sketchy riding the stroads and I usually took the sidewalks whenever I could or stayed off the road. Admittedly, staying off the road was kind of... also sketchy. Ghoulie is a mountain bike and can handle off-roading but she definitely has shitty suspension. I might talk to my local bike shop about the possibility of upgrading the suspension later. Anyway, I got to the CVS and grabbed the insoles and some snacks. As I’m walking Ghoulie away from the CVS, an older man who was going into CVS stopped me and asked if she was electric. I said yes, and we talked for a few minutes about electric bikes - he has one himself, and he asked how much she was and I said “about six hundred and not worth it in my opinion.” and I talked about the problems I personally had with her. After we said our goodbyes I walked her across the street to the Mcdonald’s to grab a quick lunch and then we set off again. I figured out I could add stops for my route, like trailheads on my phone and did so. Getting to the trail was actually not too bad, since I didn’t have to go on the street. I was pretty much basically already on the trail. I took the second picture first - the one with Ghoulie, at the top of the trailhead I was on. We then went down quite a ways and through some really pretty areas. I bet it looks extremely pretty to go down in the fall when the leaves are changing color. And it probably looks good when the leaves are on the trees and green too. I also went through this underpass/tunnel on the trail that got me across the street. That was honestly extremely cool. I have a fascination with tunnels in general, always have. When I was a kid, I’d dig small tunnels in the desert with my hands for fun. I honestly didn’t expect there to be anybody else on the trail today - it was pretty chilly about 40 F, but I saw three ladies, two of whom were sitting at a bench and a third walking her dog on the trail itself. I gave them a polite wave and continued on, where I took the first picture. Overall, riding a multi-use pathway 100% beats riding on a road with cars in my experience. The only sketchy thing about taking the trail was my battery was almost dead on my bike, but I think Ghoulie has more juice than her indicators tell me. I made it home alright. Apparently, one of the older people I live with saw me on my way down to CVS because he mentioned the tunnel I took on the way up as being part of the trail. I told him I hadn’t seen it because I wasn’t 100% taking the trail on the way down, but took it on the way back up. It was pretty cool tho, all in all. I almost cried over how pretty the trail was but I don’t expect anybody else to understand that. I just love being in nature a lot, especially after spending a decade trapped in the LA sprawl.

Review / 2024 KTM 890 SMT
When the 2024 KTM 890 SMT appeared in early 2023, I thought I had this bike figured out: A full-sized supermoto, with aggressive handling and an engine far more powerful than a dirt bike (the usual basis for a su-mo build). I figured it would be something like the Super Duke GT, a backroad touring weapon (if I may use such an unlikely term). After a few weeks of riding the bike, I’d say that’s kind of what you get here. But not exactly. The secret to understanding this bike is all in carefully reading the name. SMT stands for Super Moto Touring, and that’s what you get.

Photo: Zac Kurylyk The 890 SMT’s bones Here’s what we said when the 890 SMT was first introduced: At its heart, a supermoto is basically a dirt bike with slick tires. The 890 SMT takes that idea to the next level and offers an adventure bike with sticky rubber on 17-inch rims. The old SMT models used KTM’s V-twin engine, but the new 890 uses (as the name implies) the LC8c parallel twin that first appeared in the 790 series and now powers the 890 Adventure, among other machines. The engine, like the ADV models, is tuned to make less muscle than the 890 Duke. The SMT’s powerplant makes around 104 horsepower at 8,000 rpm, and 74 pound-feet of torque at 6,500 rpm, just like the 890 Adventure models. It has a 43-tooth rear sprocket like the Duke, instead of the 45-tooth as found on the ADV, and I think that taller gearing is noticeable on take-off. The electronics package is very similar, with Track mode subsituting for the Rally mode you see on the ADV bikes, but offering similar on-the-fly tuning for traction control and throttle response settings. The SMT also has Rain, Street and Sport riding modes, all governed by an Inertial Measurement Unit. Your leaning-sensitive ABS (with Supermoto mode!) and switchable traction control settings are tied to those riding modes. KTM also built in adjustable motor slip regulation and a quickshifter and cruise control. The bike I tested had all those perks.
One electro-perk my bike didn’t come with was heated grips. Hey, KTM! These should be standard equipment on a touring bike. Also note that some of the other electro features (Track mode) are pay-to-play add-ons that come with the Tech Pack. Photo: Zac Kurylyk Much of the chassis is identical or similar to the ADV models; the frame is all pinched straight from the 890 Adventure. The gas tank has a similar wraparound design, with lobes lowered down beside the engine, but it only holds 4.1 gallons of fuel instead of 5.3 gallons. That means less fuel range, but for street touring, it’s more than enough. I hesitate to state the range because I found it varied depending how hard I was on the throttle, but I think every 180 miles or so is when most riders will want to re-fuel. The wheels use cast rims instead of the spoked setups you often see on DIY supermotos. There’s WP Apex suspension fore and aft, with only 180 mm of travel. That’s a lot more than many streetbikes, but remember the 890 Adventure R has 240 mm of travel. As far as brakes, the SMT comes with beefy 320 mm front discs and four-piston J Juan radial-mount calipers.

Photo: Zac Kurylyk All in all, a very well-rounded package with a 428 pounds dry claimed weight. But the real question for me was: How did it ride, and was it a practical motorcycle for touring? The ride I don’t have a lot of experience on supermotos, but I do have a lot of experience on single-cylinder dirt bikes and dual sports, the basis for most supermoto builds. When I picked up the 890 SMT, I was just coming off a three-week jaunt on the GasGas ES700 Enduro, and I expected similarly aggressive feed back from the new twin-cylinder supermoto. That’s not what I got; maybe KTM retuned the 890 for the supermoto application, but it is still a less hard-edged machine at lower rpms when you compare it to single-cylinder dirtbike conversions. Like KTM’s other 890 parallel twins, you have to rev this engine up to get in the sweet spot. But when you do so, it’s a lot of fun.
Check out the fuel tank. It wraps around the engine same as the 790 and 890 tanks, but it holds less fuel as it’s not as low-mounted. The range probably isn’t needed for most SMT riders. Photo: Zac Kurylyk I left Halifax on the bike and headed for Route 2, running eastward along the Bay of Fundy’s northern edge on my way home. I was trying to get back before it was too late into the night, as I’d been gone about half of July at that point. In other words: I had a Super Moto Touring bike on a twisty road for a few hundred kilometers, which was the perfect testing scenario. And I was glad to have it, because the sitting-tall riding position with wide handlebar and a responsive engine as long as you kept it on the boil. Around the eastern end of Route 2 there was plenty of traffic to pass, but I carried a quick pace, bang-bang-banging through the gears (the quickshifter is lovely!) as I zipped around cars. This was the perfect bike for this sort of scene, with pavement kept in decent condition, the suspension easily soaking up any bumps and bangs on this secondary highway through tiny communities. However, when I got to Parrsboro, where I turned left onto Route 209 for the legendary Advocate Run, the bike showed that (surprise, surprise) it’s a streetbike.
The 890 SMT can handle a lot more banging and clanging than the Duke series, but it’s still not as well-suited for a rough road as the Adventure series; the 17-inch wheel makes for better steering, but there are trade-offs. Also: Check out those tires! I was extra-careful when riding on a rainy day, but never had any issues with them. Photo: Zac Kurylyk Route 209 is in terrible, unsafe condition, with massive potholes, gravel-covered corners, and long stretches where erosion under the pavement has left the road surface on a sketchy angle. I wondered if the 890 SMT would be able to soak up this punishment with aplomb, or would I wish I had an adventure bike instead, with larger-diameter front wheel and a suspension better-suited to the rough terrain? The 890 SMT steered around most of the trouble, but the big bumps that I hit were… unpleasant. I suppose tweaking and tinkering with the fork clickers might have made a difference, but given that I was riding on a cast wheel, I opted for discretion over valor and decided to dial back my pace as I frolicked amidst the potholes. The night ended with a long highway run from Amherst to home, maybe 300 kilometers. Like I said, this ride had a taste of everything, and I was glad to have a chance to see how the big supermoto ate the superslab. Whether we like it or not, a lot of our moto trips include long stretches of four-lane, and any serious touring bike has to be able to handle it.

I suspect many owners will bolt up a taller shield if they’re doing longer distances, but I had no complaints about the bodywork or any other part of highway performance. I can happily report that roll-on power on the highway was excellent, much to the embarrassment of a kid who tried to impress his girlfriend with an impromptu race down the highway … errrrr, hypothetically speaking, of course. Final conclusions I ended up getting the occasional ride in aboard the 890 SMT as the summer went on, but I focused more on dirt riding and the SMT spent more time in the garage than I thought. I didn’t get any more touring-style trips in on the SMT, but I did get a lot more backroad and urban riding in. I think, if that’s the majority of your riding, you might appreciate one of KTM’s other supermotos (KTM 690/Husqvarna 701/GasGas ES700) more, for that sort of thing. The SMT is indeed better suited for long-haul riding than braptastic hoonery, as the name itself implies. Not that it can’t do that sort of thing, it can, but a hardcore supermoto junkie would probably enjoy a lighter, more hairy-chested bike intended for traditional supermoto-style riding.
If you don’t intend to do longer miles, I think a buyer might be happier with a more aggressive, smaller supermoto, like KTM’s LC4-powered models. At least *I* would. But for other riders who enjoy flogging bigger bikes around irresponsibly, the 890 SMT might indeed be the ticket. If you’re curious, I think you should do your best to get a test ride. It will tell you if the machine is suitable for your needs. Photo: Zac Kurylyk But if you want to get a little farther away from home, then the SMT is the thing. It’s comfortable for hours on end; it has electronics that can save your butt when fatigue and the elements delay your reaction time; it has enough power to keep a fast pace. Just don’t expect it to handle the same kind of abuse that a true adventure bike will. I also suspect that KTM figures some riders are going to want to take this thing out for trackdays, given that a Track riding mode is installed. Given that I have zero experience on a racetrack, I won’t even pretend to comment on the bike’s suitability except for this: On a bumpy Canadian roadracing track like St-Eustache or Shubenacadie, I bet this thing would be a blast, even on the stock tires, which have barely any siping and frankly, look pretty close to trackday tires. For me? the SMT is a cool idea, but I’d prefer an 890 Adventure S with a 19-inch front wheel—but they don’t currently make one. Or a Super Duke GT, if I wanted high-speed touring … that bike is just a little more super than the SMT, even if it’s based off the Duke, not an ADV platform. The last bell of the year rang out minutes before, and a swarm of students stampeded out of Lavender Creek Middle School. It was early June, and the endless blue sky and bright afternoon sun were already turning up the heat. Young teens gathered onto the buses, rode off in bikes, or set out on foot towards their first adventure of the next three months. The scent of freshly cut grass drifted through the air. It was a picture perfect view, a slice of youthful Americana.
The thirteen year old boy sitting in the detention hall wasn't so lucky. His green eyes stared up at the clock turning slowly on the wall in front of him. Aside from the teacher sitting at the desk, he was alone in the room.
Trent sighed to himself, softly enough that the teacher couldn't hear him. Of course he got himself into detention on the last day of school. Of course he was the only one to get detention on the last day of school. The principal had told him that he should be thankful that was all he got. Any other day of the year, a fight with other students would have earned him a suspension.
That wasn't much of a comfort, considering Trent was the only one to actually get punished. Not the ones that were causing the problem in the first place though. The boys that had been bullying Trent and his friends for a year were jocks - and not run of the hill jocks either. They were football stars in the making, if one believed the coach. And football stars didn't get in trouble for beating the crap out of a kid smaller and weaker than them.
But Trent, who was not a jock, let alone a popular jock? He was the one stuck with a black eye, bruises and scratches all over his skin, and detention was the icing on the cake. It was a wonder his friends - who had tried to break up the fight - weren't given detention as well.
Who's idea was it to have detention on the last day of school? It made no sense to him. It was embarrassing enough that the principal had to call his grandmother to let her know he would be home late. Now he was stuck at the school for longer than he ever wanted to be. All while the assholes were walking free.
Sighing, he fingered the pages of his book, a blatant Star Wars rip off. It was something he had already read (and hated), but it was his only book left in his locker. When he arrived in detention he tried reading the first page. Instead he found himself reading the first paragraph over and over again; it was enough to put him to sleep. At this point, he would have been glad for homework. At least it would be something for his brain to do.
The bald teacher stared daggers at Trent, then went back to his newspaper. Mr. Roberts was both the P.E. teacher, and the coach of the football team. For some reason, he had taken an instant dislike to Trent and his friends all the way back in sixth grade. He made sure that they knew, singling them out for criticism during activities. The fight hadn't exactly put him in his good graces either.
Mr. Roberts turned a page in his newspaper, his breathing loud in the otherwise silent detention hall. No one liked the detention hall - it had a feel of sterility despite the layer of dinginess that it somehow always had no matter how much the janitor cleaned it. The chairs were likely the same chairs Trent’s parents used when they were kids, and they wobbled no matter how still you sat. Each desk had dried out, chewed up gum underneath.
Trent bit the inside of his lip. Why won’t it just end already?
The door opened behind him, breaking the silence. He jerked his head away and watched the dark haired girl awkwardly walk between the aisles of desks.
"You're late," Mr. Roberts snarled. He lowered the newspaper to watch her as she took a seat behind Trent, then went back to reading it in silence.
She didn’t reply.
Trent knew her. Well, he knew of her. One of the ‘popular girls’ that sat together during lunch and pep rallies, gossiping and reading fashion magazines. He never talked to those girls, no one in his group did - they were so different that they might as well have come from different planets.
But he knew of her from outside of school too. When Trent was in fifth grade, a family from California had moved into the house next to his grandparents’. They dragged him along to greet his new neighbors, interrupting his Six Million Dollar Man marathon. His grandparents said their ‘hellos’ and asked the couple what California was like, while Trent's eyes glazed over in boredom. At random, he spotted someone walking down the stairs
She had asked, in that girly high-pitched voice, “Mom, have you seen my pink sundress? It’s not in any of my boxes.” She ran down the stairs, somehow not tripping over herself, and tugged at her mother's sleeve. When she saw Trent standing on the porch with his grandparents, she froze.
Her eyes were wide and shy at the same time. “H-hi,” She stuttered.
Trent stared at her, squinting. Weird girl…"Um, hi."
They hadn’t spoken to each other since that day. But he had noticed her, here and there. Saw her in the (rare) classes they had together. But they were always separated.
And now they were the only ones in detention.
…why was his face feeling warm?
Trent quickly tried to go back to his book, completely in vain. The stupid book was unreadable - how the hell did it even get published? What a waste of trees and ink.
The phone on Mr. Roberts’ desk rang, and he picked it up promptly. “Yeah?” There was a pause. Then a deep frown on his face. “Alright, I’ll be right there.” He hung up the phone and gave both of the students a judgemental eye. “You two stay put. Some brats vandalized my car. When I get my hands on them…” Getting out of his chair, Mr. Roberts dug out his keys from his pants pocket and pointed his finger at Trent and the girl. “If I find out either of you left while I was gone, there will be hell to pay.”
Both of them remained silent. When Mr. Roberts left, slamming the door behind him, Trent once again tried to get back to his book.
“Psst.”
Something was poking him in the shoulder. He turned around in his seat, and came face to face with Mariqueen Maandig.
She was smiling with a rosy gloss. “What are you in for?"
