Photoshoot of the Week: March 30th-April 5th 2020 - Mrs Yamaha & Yamaha YZF-R1
Astride the Neckar River in Germany, in a forested vineyard-and-orchard setting in historic Swabia, Stuttgart lies between the Black Forest to the west and the Swabian Alp to the south. The city was founded as the stud farm Stuotgarten around AD 950. Progress was swift: by the 12th century Stuttgart was a trade centre, by the 13th century a blossoming city and by the early 14th century the seat of the Württemberg royal family. An age of industrialisation dawned in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with Bosch inventing the spark plug and Daimler pioneering the gas engine. In the 20th century Struttgart became the centre of the largest industrial zone in southwestern Germany: the metropolitan area is the site of the world or German headquarters for a number of prominent auto manifacturing companies, including Daimler AG and Porsche. Whether with trusty steeds or turbocharged engines, Stuttgart was defintely born to ride! And that means this city is basically the sanctuary for gear people, car lovers and racer maniacs just like the sassy and wild bikergirl and popular socialite Mrs Yamaha, which chose this city as staging grounds for her bike raids. Not only: the Struttgart region is also home to many general and electrical engineering companies as well as firms engaged in clean energy, robotics, and fuel cell and laser technology. Basically this city is the new and the ancient together, in a perfect combination. As history teachers usually repeat, we must learn from the past, for without the past, there is no future. Struttgart clearly knows very well this preaching, and Mrs Yamaha does too: she is addicted to her beautiful new Yamaha RN49 (2017) but she can't live without her RN22 (2009) too. After all, how can you possibly choose between these two beauties? Thank god there's no marriage between a rider and his/her bike... "New" Yamaha R1 RN49 *** "Old" Yamaha R1 RN22 *** For 2019 Yamaha have taken an evolution not revolution approach to the 2020 YZF-R1 and R1M. Yamaha claims that both bikes are more rideable and refined than the previous editions, all while being Euro5 compliant.We have already talked about the R1M model two weeks ago, so now we're going to focus about the brand new Yamaha R1. The base model YZF-R1 comes in at £16,799 and is available in Icon Blue – as shown – and Midnight Black. New styling tweaks for this year are the matt-finished grey front mudguard, tail unit flanks and the revised front fairing that’s claimed to give 5% better aero efficiency – new fairing fitted to both models. The 2020 R1, together with her big brother R1M, are the first in the Yamaha range to meet the latest Euro5 regulations. Helping to achieve this, Yamaha’s engineers have increased combustion efficiency by moving the injectors to squirt directly down the intake – as opposed to across it – and relocating the throttle valves nearer to the combustion chamber. The new engine is also blessed with revised finger followers, a new oil delivery system, revised exhaust ports and a final drive new chain. The new 10-hole injectors, 21.5° spray angle, and relocated throttle valves have reduced intake volume by 12% for improved combustion stability, which should help to create a more efficient engine. To beat the Euro5 regulations, the R1 and R1M are both fitted with four catalytic converters. Two in the forward part of the exhaust chamber and two at the rear, just below the link pipe. The engine’s torque and power delivery are unmistakable, with the four catalysers doing little to mute the MotoGP exhaust note. If anything, the engine feels to pull better in the lower gears than the out-going machine. Other than the improved rideability low-down, most of the other revisions are hard to pinpoint from the seat and are probably more about emissions and noise regs, rather than improving the show for the average rider. Four refined power modes are available and at least one for any riding situation, with 1 being most aggressive. Mode 2 was optimal for smoother power delivery on the track because mode 1 is a bit harsh with an aggressive throttle delivery. Mode 2 allows the revised CP4 engine to produce smooth and predictable output when either blasting to full throttle after cornering or regulating a maintenance throttle throughout a corner. This smoothness occurred across the rev range, whether at 5000 rpm or nearing redline at 14,000 rpm. All work identically to the previous generation R1s and integrate seamlessly when dialed into your riding style. On the track, my map basically read 1 across the board, except for 2 on the engine braking management and power mode—all are changeable on the fly. Even when the tires got greasy, the electronic intervention was not noticeable. For the truly experienced pro racers, traction, slide and lift control can be defeated with the motorcycle stationary. The 2020 Yamaha YZF-R1 has revised KYB suspension that furnishes a more planted feel throughout acceleration, stopping, and cornering. Tossing the already lightweight (450 pounds, ready to ride) around through quick switchbacks is effortless with the R1’s KYB setup, and even more so with the YZR-M1’s electronic suspension. That feeling is especially apparent during mid-corner throttle—the motorcycle remains stable and smooth as it maintains the optimal line. The more planted feeling is due to Yamaha totally revising the R1’s KYB inverted fork with a new internal shim stack design, and optimizing the KYB shock settings. Although the revamped 2020’s KYB suspension may not be noticeable to a novice rider familiar with last year’s R1, it definitely offers more feeling that inspires more confidence when pushing the motorcycle to the limit. The bodywork is slightly massaged for 2020, and Yamaha claims a 5.3-percent increase in aerodynamic improvement when a rider is at full tuck. Besides the slight massage, the YZF-R1 also has a full carbon fiber tailpiece to complement the returning carbon fiber side fairings and nose. So which are the main differences with the R1M model? R1 and R1M are physical machines to haul around a track, rewarding a rider that prefers to grab the bike by the scruff of the neck and push it into corners, steering it on the throttle at the corner exit. The R1M retains that mid-corner stability of the old model, while the slightly unnerving rebound action being the only real issue I could find with the base model R1. Both bikes now feature integrated top fairing and tank sides which are aimed at increasing aero efficiency. While they may help with that, I did find it a little harder to grip the tank sides with my legs. If you’re looking for a machine to hang off on the track, a set tank grips should be on your wish list. With around 75% of R1 owners taking their bikes on track at least once or twice a year, it’s hardly surprising that the track is the primary focus for the new machine. The rider aids and electronics reaffirm the R1 as one of the most technologically advanced machines in the sector, with a rider interface that, while it isn’t simple, does offer more levels of adjustment than most will know what to do with! For less experienced riders it’ll compliment your time on road and track, helping you to achieve more corner speed and lean angle in a safer environment. So I was on craigslist looking at Camaros for fun. I came across a 1979 Camaro Z28. The car was completely redone in 2001 and a new 350 crate engine was put in it in 2003. The car has new leaf springs, suspension bushings and tires on it. The new engine and trans has just under 45,000 miles on it as well. The seller is asking $5500. Ive driven it and am pleased. Yamaha has been thin on details, but we will apparently see it in America, and we might find used Spyders and Harley Tri Glides going for fire-sale prices now that ladies and gents opting for or needing three-wheelers have an option that gives ’em their lean back.

Reading about Tom’s ride aboard the new KTM 1090 Adventure R, and Scott Rousseau’s Taste of Dakar adventure has got us on a big dirtbike kick. This got us looking through the MO archives for old adventure bike stories, and this piece on the 1997 BMW F650 was among the oldest reviews on the subject we could find. Until the F650 came on the scene, BMW had nothing to cater to the newer rider. With its 652cc Single (from Rotax), BMW was hoping to fill that void. How did the bike perform? By Gourd Mounce Apr. 20, 1997 Photos by MO Staff For years BMW has offered buyers a varied line-up of sportbikes, tourers, and dual-purpose machines with engine configurations ranging from twins to triples to fours. Despite this wide range of styles and powerplants, not since 1967 has BMW built a single-cylinder machine designed for the beginning rider. That has changed with the 1997 F650. After three successful years in Europe, BMW has finally brought their popular single to North America. With its unintimidating 652cc single-cylinder engine, lightweight chassis, great ergonomics and tremendous flexibility, it just may have been worth the wait. Inspiration for BMW’s F650, dubbed the Funduro in Europe, came when company representatives visited Aprilia’s factory in Italy. At that time, Aprilia was in the final stages of production on their Pegaso 650, a high-performance bike powered by Rotax’s liquid-cooled five-valve single. The innovative German firm quickly recognized the benefit of cooperative effort between these manufacturers, and immediately sought their assistance in releasing a similar model. By using a Rotax engine in a bike built by Aprilia, all to BMW specifications, an important beginner-level bike could be added to their line at a competitive price.
For BMW to use an Austrian engine in a bike built in Italy and still have it look and feel like a BMW required careful design planning. Various configurations were experimented with before the final nod was given to a draft by freelance stylist Martin Longmore. An Englishman now living in Bavaria, Longmore’s concept while designing the F650 was “to create a harmonious blend of aesthetic, technical, functional and innovative qualities with emotional appeal – a blend providing that unique touch which makes every BMW absolutely unmistakable.” One look at the F650 will tell you that Longmore’s design was successful. While the bike has many styling touches of its own, the family resemblance to R-series Boxers is undeniable. Chassis design is fairly straightforward. A square-section steel frame carries engine oil in its top tube and uses the engine as a stressed-member to increase rigidity. A pair of 41mm forks with a generous 6.69 inches of travel handle suspension duties, while a single shock with hydraulic preload adjustment and 40-position rebound damping is used in the rear. Swingarm construction is of aluminum-alloy to reduce weight. Braking chores are handled by a single four-piston Brembo caliper putting the squeeze on an 11.8 inch disc on the front wheel. A twin-piston caliper grabbing a 10.9 inch disc is used at the rear. Equally crucial to the F650’s success was an engine that provided the smoothness and reliability that BMW and its customers demand. Rotax has long been one of the premier manufacturers of large-displacement single-cylinder four-strokes, and their five-valve engine had a proven track record. Still, BMW made several engine modifications to suit their needs. Rotax’s dry-sump lubrication and single-piece connecting rod were retained but the engine’s roller bearings were changed to low-friction plain bearings in the interests of longer life and reduced mechanical noise. A K-series styled, pent-roof, four-valve combustion chamber with dual overhead camshafts, bucket tappets and shim-type valve adjusters was used. The four-valve head provided room for a dual-plug setup that adds horsepower while lowering exhaust emissions, an important concern for BMW. Feeding the engine is a pair of constant-vacuum Mikuni carburetors, each with its own intake port. Similarly, exhaust gases are carried out by a pair of headers through twin ports. These modifications allow the engine to produce a healthy 48 horsepower at 6500 rpm with 41 lbs-ft of torque at 5200.
Riding the F650 shows that BMW’s engineers have done their homework. Performance is linear throughout the entire rev range, and the motor is surprisingly smooth for a single. This engine likes to rev, and is more than happy to pull beyond its 7500 rpm redline. However, that tendency to rev means some low-end grunt has been sacrificed. Wheelies? Sure, with some effort: But if you’re looking for XR600 stump-pulling torque, you’d better check elsewhere. Around town, the BMW’s long-travel suspension make commuting a breeze. Handling is quick and predictable, due mainly to the F650’s light (421 lb. wet) weight. Brembo brakes enable the rider to avoid even the most inattentive commuter. Meanwhile, the 6.69 inches of suspension travel provided by the front forks easily soak up even L.A.’s huge earthquake-sculpted potholes. While engine vibration makes some dual-sport singles a chore to ride at freeway speeds, the F650 is as smooth as many multis. Cruising at 75 mph is comfortable, and vibration isn’t more than a mild buzzing. Only at 80 mph and beyond does the buzz increase to the point of annoyance. However, buffeting at these speeds is tiresome due to the tall windscreen. Here the street-only F650ST’s lower screen would be preferable. Seat comfort is good, allowing several hundred miles to pass without complaint. Fuel mileage was excellent with a combination of fast freeway and city riding yielding 50 miles per gallon. With its generous 4.6 gallon tank, a cruising range of 230 miles is possible. Adding to the long-distance capability of the F650 are its optional saddlebags, top case, heated handgrips and electrical accessory socket. Our test unit came equipped with a set of BMW’s K-series saddlebags. While pricey at $645 plus another $197 for the mounting hardware, these bags offer tremendous carrying capacity. With its ability to carry both a full-face helmet and 18-pack of cans with ease, the F650 proved itself a valuable mule. Also available is a top case for $315, plus $96 for the mounting kit. Another option is a set of smaller city cases for $331. However, like all of BMW’s K-series luggage they still use an awkward mounting system. Attaching the bags always seemed to take a few minutes longer than we would have preferred.
Similar to the R1100GS, the F650 version is offered as a dual-purpose bike. Off-road its light weight puts it miles ahead of its portly big brother. While nobody is going to enter an F650 in the Baja 1000, it does possess a surprising amount of dirt capability. We took the F650 to our official MO off-road test area and found that, while it did bottom out over larger bumps and get out of shape on fast bumpy sections, it could be ridden with reasonable confidence through areas where larger adventure bikes would fear to tread. Shorter riders will be glad to hear that BMW offers a lowering kit for the F650. Unlike other BMWs with adjustable seat heights, the lowering kit actually drops the center of gravity, via a modified swingarm and shock stop. Shortened side and centerstands are included with the kit. BMW’s F650 is a complete, refined motorcycle that’ll do many things well. It’s as capable of exploring bumpy dirt roads as it is commuting or highway touring. While it may be an attractive model for beginners, experienced riders will also appreciate its combination of simplicity, light weight and refinement. Gixxer Fix: A GSX-R1100 with Ducati superbike suspension
Arno Overweel builds pretty wild custom motorcycles. He’s not afraid of bolting a turbo onto a Honda CBX1000, for example. But he usually reserves those neck-turners for his customers: his own daily runner is a bone stock and somewhat anonymous Suzuki TL1000.
A few years ago, the Dutchman built an eye-catching custom for himself, but made the mistake of taking it to a show—and someone made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. So he figured it was time for another personal project.
Arno had a specific idea: decades ago, he’d successfully mated a single-sided Honda VFR800 swing arm to a Suzuki GSX-R1100. Right now, he had the wheels and swingarm from a Ducati 1098 lying around in his Culemborg shop, and an itch to pull off a similar trick.
He managed to source a mint condition GSX-R1100 donor, dragged it to the Rno Cycles workshop… and froze. “I could not put the saw to it,” he says.
“When I get a new bike, I get rid of all the unnecessary stuff. But for the first time in my life I grew a conscience. I was thinking, this one is too original for its age. It’s a classic. This will be a sin.”
Luckily, a friend came to the rescue. While browsing the classifieds he stumbled across the GSXR that Arno had built years ago—with the Honda swingarm still attached. Arno took it as a sign, snapped it up, and tore the Suzuki down for the second time.
The first job was to swap the VFR swing arm for the Ducati 1098 unit. That meant milling out some metal on the frame, doing the same to the swingarm, and then building up certain areas with aluminum for strength. Arno also fabricated a full set of spacers to match everything up.
The new setup also called for a new mounting point for the shock linkage, so Arno designed a multi-purpose subframe to link the suspension and support the tail. The shock is a Showa unit, overhauled and tuned by HK Suspension.
Up top is a custom tail section, complete with an integrated taillight, and a neat bolt-on license plate bracket that also holds the turn signals. Arno fabricated a new seat pan too, then had Miller Kustom Upholstery cover the unique three-piece saddle.
The Ducati 1098 wheels and Brembo brakes went onto the Suzuki too, along with a set of Pirelli Dragon Supercorsa tires. But the front forks (and fender) are from a Ducati Panigale, held in place by a set of custom-machined yokes.
Move up to the control area, and you’ll find a set of custom-made clip-on clamps, holding carbon fiber bars from LSL. There’s also an Acewell speedo, and an aftermarket Harley V-Rod headlight. Everything’s mounted on hand-made brackets, and they’re all integrated too; the headlight bracket bolts to the speedo support, which also holds the brake fluid reservoir.
As well as loading the Suzuki with cool details like that, Arno has installed custom bits like the rearsets and front sprocket guard. There’s also a new oil cooler adorned with beautifully machined side guards, lines from Goodridge, and nifty little line spacers.
Performance upgrades include 40 mm Mikuni carbs with K&N filters, and a custom-built stainless steel four-into-one exhaust system. There’s new wiring too, and a Lithium-ion battery hiding under the tail hump.
Final touches include minor tweaks to the fuel tank, which is now topped by a modified LSL gas cap. The stylish coat of blue paint was shot by Ben Oud’s Motorspuitwerk, and the cheeky street racer-inspired graphics come from Jeroen Overweel.
It’s something of a mashup, with hints of cafe racer, street fighter and 90s sportbike all gloriously rolled into one. And with even more than the original 143 hp on tap from the screaming inline four, this is one heck of a grocery getter.

Custom Bikes Of The Week: 12 April, 2020
A new limited production BMW R NineT from Germany, a slammed Sportster built by two of Jakarta’s top custom shops, and a slick new electric bike from the Swedish manufacturer CAKE. If we could put them all in our garage, we would.
Custom Sportster 883 by Newline SC and Garasi 19 It takes a very special Sportster custom to wow us these days, but this machine from two Jakarta workshops did the trick. It’s called ‘The Parama,’ it’s based on a 2003 Sportster 883 Anniversary, and it’s a collaboration between Dickson Will of Newline SC and Andre Tenardi of Garasi 19.
Stance is always the hardest thing to get right on a Sportster with café pretensions, but these guys have nailed it. We’re guessing the forks have been lowered a little in the custom cnc’d clamps, and there are new Burly shocks at the back. Chunky Coker tires fill in the visual gaps.
The monocoque-style bodywork is actually in two sections, but the flow is beautifully judged and gives the Sportster a compact, streamlined vibe. There’s a diamond-stitched black seat pad from the West Java leather specialist Tegep Boots and the tail unit is finished off with a discreet bar of LEDs.
The engine cases have been powder coated black, but the rocker boxes have been given a contrasting bronze anodized finish—the only real hint of color on the entire machine. Less obvious is a full complement of Motogadget tech, including a new speedo, turn signals, grips and switches.
‘The Parama’ could so easily have been a Frankenstein bike designed by a committee, but Newline SC and Garasi 19 obviously work well together. The judges at the huge Kustomfest show thought so too, awarding this Harley second place in the American category. [Images by Dickson Will]
‘Cobra’ BMW R nineT by Hookie We’re not generally into computer renders here, however sweet they may look. But when a major shop like Hookie Co. signals the release of a new model, it’s worth taking note.
‘Cobra’ is based on the current model R nineT and these computer-generated images show the kit that the Dresden workshop is developing. It’s not Hookie’s first modified R nineT: we loved their retro/classic take on the model a couple of years ago.
This time around, the vibe is much more modern, with angular lines and a dead straight top frame rail. The tank is chiseled, putting a 21st century spin on the style of vintage Heinrich and Hoske tanks.
There’s a knurled fuel cap atop the tank, which segues into a waspish seat unit with a new pad that’s a rider-friendly 805mm off the ground. The front wheel is shrouded by a sportbike-style fender.
Aside from the full custom bodywork, the engine gets a new intake system with pod filters and a slimline, blacked-out custom exhaust system. Lighting the way up front is a Koso Thunderbolt LED headlight set into a custom cowl.
Hookie have defined five initial styles in the first release, and the first bike (‘Toxic Red,’ above) is already reserved. If your appetite is whetted, you’ll need to find €34,900 (US$38,000), which includes the cost of a brand new BMW R nineT. [Hookie]
Honda CB750 by FingersCrossed Moto We reckon small community garages are going to see an uptick in these uncertain times. FingersCrossed Moto is based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and their CB750 is a carefully crafted 1999 Nighthawk that tested the resolve of the three garage founders.
The problems started when the idea of mating a Honda VFR800 swingarm to the stock frame turned out to be … not such a good idea. But after the guys rebuilt the back end of the CB, everything else started to fall into place.
A GSX-R600 front end was slotted in, and the engine was juiced up with a set of custom-tuned Mikuni carbs and an aftermarket exhaust system with a custom-built muffler.
There’s a new seat on top of the flattened subframe, and multiple other custom parts finished to OEM level—like the side covers, headlight mount, and chainguard. It’s all finished off with a lovely lick of Honda’s classic ‘Desert Silver’ metallic paint.
The start might have been troubled, but the result was worth it. Here’s to seeing more builds from the smaller community shops. [More]
The new CAKE Kalk INK SL We’re fans of the electric bikes from the Swedish manufacturer CAKE, despite the weird naming and slightly confusing model lineup. The styling is quirky yet appealing, and the specs are good.
This new INK SL model is CAKE’s latest street-legal bike and is based on the range-topping $14,000 KALK&. It’ll be priced at a more tolerable $10,500 though—thanks to slightly different components and a simpler rear suspension setup.
The stats for the INK SL suggest it will be a very accomplished commuter bike. Dry weight is a mere 82 kg (169 lbs), and top speed is a smidge over 90 kph (56 mph). Range is certified at 86 km (53 miles), which is plenty for most urban commutes.
The battery is a 50Ah unit and it can be fully charged in just 2.5 hours. There are several riding modes too, from a leisurely ‘Explore’ setting, giving up to four hours of range, which drops to one hour in the full-on ‘Excel’ track and race mode.
The hardware is all high quality, with 6061 aluminium everywhere, motorcross-spec suspension, four-piston brakes, and aerospace-grade 7050 aluminum bars. Forged aluminum 19-inch wheels are shod with dual sport moto rubber.
CAKE operates on a direct-to-consumer sales model, and worldwide delivery of the INK SL is due to start in July. Bikes will be shipped from the closest warehouse, which is Utah in the USA or Rotterdam in Europe. [CAKE]

Battle of The Twins Redux: A 310-pound BMW race bike
In the lore of motorcycle racing, Battle of The Twins has few equals. First staged in the US at Daytona in 1981, the 50-mile series has spawned many epic duels—and spurred the development of the legendary Britten V1000.
The ripples from those thunderous early races are still felt today, as evidenced by this incredible BMW racer that just washed up into our inbox.
It comes from classic race bike aficionado Scott Kolb, who’s based an hour and a half north of New York City.
Scott had a theory: “An air cooled BMW engine in a sweet chassis, with the right rider, just might beat up on modern sportbikes at local track days.” He set out to build a 310-pound [140 kg], 82 horsepower track bike.
Influenced by the writings of Tony Foale and the race bikes of Chris Hodgson, Scott decided to build a homage to the great Daytona BoTT racers. So he pulled the engine from his 1976 R90/6 road bike and put the rest of the machine on eBay to help pay for parts.
Fortunately, he had a client with the same vision. And like Scott, the client works in the high-end architectural field, and he is a hands-off kinda guy.
“We’ve both seen enough clients ruin great design by diluting the original vision,” says Scott. “The best projects come from a consistent and pure design idea.”
“To that end, he offered no commentary—not even about color. But he did say ‘The bike needs to fit me,’ and left it at that. He’s 6′ 4″ and 240 pounds, [109 kg] so I made a bike to measure.”
Like a good suit, this BMW fits him to a tee. For starters, both the wheelbase and the ergonomic triangle—pegs to bars to seat—are 5% bigger than the average production bike.
This is second nature for Scott, because the many chassis he has built over the last 20 years have a strict focus on function—while being mindful of the need for visual flow.
Scott knew that the target weight figure would require carbon wheels from Rotobox and Öhlins R&T suspension front and back. The carbon wheel is only available for the BMW R nineT, which prompted Scott to use other R nineT parts like the rearsets, levers, blinkers, mirrors, and a license plate carrier from Rizoma.
“Rizoma uses surface machining on many of their parts, which shows in the machining flowlines left behind by the ball mill cutter. I love this look: it adds a little texture for a good feel under your glove, plays with light, and most importantly shows the thought process of the CNC programmer—giving the parts a human touch.”
The engine has all the classic go-fast bits offered in the mid 80s by Chris Hodgson’s CC Products outfit (which has now morphed into San Jose BMW). The heads are dual-plugged, with larger valves and porting and flowing. There’s a lightened and balanced flywheel, a performance clutch, and a crank dynamically balanced by Falicon. Displacement has been bumped up to 1000 cc using the well-known Siebenrock big bore kit.
“A 200-section rear tire was completely unnecessary, but I couldn’t resist!” says Scott. This required a one off swingarm with extra offset, and a lot of machining to get the R nineT rear drive to mate up to an airhead transmission. The Brembo calipers are from a BMW S1000R, matched to Brembo master cylinders, and the clutch is a hydraulic setup from SWT-Sports in Germany.
The 4130 chromoly tube chassis is based on the famous ‘Team Incomplete Boxer’ owned by photographer Gregor Halenda, but goes one better.
It includes a similar motor mount that attaches to the top of the engine block, and eliminates the cradle downtubes. “This visually frees up the wonderful cast block that we all love,” says Scott, “but the real benefit is quicker lap times.”
The powder-coated tubing is a thing of beauty, and the ‘one better’ part is a rear billet mounting block to eliminate the tubes reaching to the bottom rear of the engine block. “While we were at it, we realized we could isolate the forces of the rear swingarm from the front end by making the swingarm pivot in its own subframe.”
The bodywork was styled in-house. “It’s simple shapes, found by laying lines over photos of the rolling chassis,” says Scott. “The actual shapes were formed by sculpting foam, and then molds were made.”
The fairing and seat unit were were laid up in carbon fiber, with the outer layer being a 3oz twill weave. (“I like how the asymmetrical weave gets the compound curves to really pop.”) The tank was hammered out of .062 aluminum, and is finished with a Rizoma fuel cap.
The technology may be modern, but the body finishes have a hint of retro style. “I love 70s graphic design,” says Scott. “Primary color schemes were everywhere when I was a kid, and seem to influence my company’s aesthetic choices.”
“A pure cyan is used on my company logo, and always seems to make it into our race bikes. Throw in the Öhlins gold and Rizoma’s red accents, and you have a bike ready for the full primary color treatment—which lead to the red stripe down the center of the body, splitting the carbon and aluminum.”
The electronics are ultra modern, with a Motogadget m.unit control box at the center, taking signals from discreet m.buttons and a keyless ignition system. “The keyless receiver is hidden in the carbon fiber seat unit, along with all of the electronics,” Scott reveals. There’s a new ignition module too, from Euro MotoElectrics.
The BMW hits the 310-pound, 82 horsepower target, and Scott has finished it just in time to ship it to the One Moto Show at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon, which opens on February 7.
Once he gets the bike back, it’ll be fettled and tuned for the track, and ready for informal battles with more modern sportbikes. It’ll be intriguing to see how it fares.
