Be careful of emotional music in movies and TV Shows.
By "be careful" I mean, when you're doing that thing I never stop talking about—you're trying to figure out why a moment in a story moved you—think about whether or not the story really set up and followed the moment through...or if they just threw a really emotional-sounding track/song over top of a rushed, cheap moment.
Like in the Vampire Diaries, or Suicide Squad, or an animated-streaming-movie. The characters will be saying something normal or maybe a bit cheesy to each other, the scene is about to end, and the storytellers don't have a good way to end it, so some song starts playing quietly under the dialogue. And suddenly you're feeling something, even though a second ago you were not that into it.
In the Vampire Diaries, it's usually The Fray. In Suicide Squad you'll get a punk-rock song as a new villains-enter-the-room scene starts...or several, every time a new scene starts.
In a streaming-budget musical, it might even be an original song with original lyrics that the characters are singing...
But pay attention! Music is one of the very easiest ways to engage a human's emotions. It's why influencers play inspirational piano music or covers of good movie soundtracks over what they're saying when they're trying to send out an encouraging message. It's why motivational speakers have a musical pad under everything they're saying. And yes, it's why movies use music, too.
And that is not a bad thing.
But what is bad is music that is used to try and make a moment impactful...but the story itself, and the characters in the scene, and the context of the scene, and sometimes even the lyrics of the song itself, can't support it.
The lyrics could be total crap—they could fail to fit the characters singing them, or the moment they're being sung during, at all—
—or it's an indie pop song that is actually about a friend with a drug addiction, but it's playing over, like, a scene where a young girl is saying "see you around" to the boy she has a crush on, so you feel all hyped emotionally.
It's cheap. It's silly. It's what Disney did in Wish (you knew this was coming, I've been on this topic for weeks)
Having Asha and Magnifico sing "At All Costs," which is a love song, to a room full of tangible bubbles makes zero sense. The song's lyrics only work if you're a pair of lovers declaring your devotion to each other—or, maybe, if you're a king and apprentice singing to actual people, not a room full of their daydreams. But!
The music is pretty. And it's literally engineered to be inspiring, and play with your heart strings. So you're sitting there going, "oh, wow, what a breathtaking magical song, I love it,"
but try and explain to me why you love it in connection to the story and there's nothing there.
Nothing that makes sense. You've just been emotionally manipulated by music. What you're really responding to is just the way the song sounds, and nothing else.
It's like the song (whether it's a musical number sung by the characters, or a piece of the score, or a pop song playing quietly in the background) is a beautiful set of curtains.
If you hang it up on a curtain rod, or even drape it artfully from the ceiling, it can do a lot for the space. It can make the place look bigger, or more comfortable, or show off the room's depth, or set off other pieces of furniture. It can even be a focal point.
But you know what the curtains need to do all that? A curtain rod. Something to be hung on!
If you just ball up the curtains and drop them in the center of the room, someone might walk in and go, "oh, are these curtains? They're pretty!" But you know what else they'll say? "Where are you going to put them? Why are they in the middle of the floor?" Because they don't belong there. The curtains are wasted on the floor.
Like a song that has no contextual meaning and is just laying in the scene like discarded curtains, arbitrarily playing with your emotions. Doesn't belong there; and what a waste!
So next time you really love a scene that has music in it at all, see what part the music plays.
If the lyrics make sense with the characters, if the story has reached a point where the song is all that's needed to accentuate the emotional depth that's already there, instead of creating it where it was lacking, then awesome. Now you can articulate what made you appreciate the song, so much better!
But if the lyrics made no sense with where the characters or the story was at; if it sounded pretty but didn't fit the scene; if it was the only emotional thing about the context of the scene—then it's not the story that you like. It's just the song, by itself. Add it to your Spotify playlist but don't say you loved that movie or that scene. You just loved that song.
Give credit where it's due instead of letting filmmakers trick you with cheap musical moments.

I don’t think Wish is bad movie, to be honest. I just think it’s incredibly bland and unable to justify the money and effort put into creating it. However, I also think it’s very funny that it’s currently getting thrashed by Trolls; Band Together and it is fun to watch Disney crash and burn every once in a while.
Also, I should have put this in the original ask. Adriana Debose as Asha and also recently Racheal Zegler were absolutely shoved onto the glass cliff by Disney and that does make me mad and annoyed.
oh yeah i LOVE watching the corporation crash and burn, and again saying the movie's bland is valid af. it's just wild to me that people are calling it the second coming of satan

I’m attempting again to do some predictions for season 2. The last time I tried this I got too bogged down in the details, this time I’m going to try for broad strokes. I am no longer trying to map songs to episodes, though someone else can try if they dare.
The series will continue to explore what Gobo’s friendship with Junior looks like. Meanwhile the other fraggles will remain understandably cautious of gorgs.
The video Doc acquired of fraggles interacted will either get deleted or corrupted in some way, she’ll assume some kids are playing a weird prank on her, or like Doc Classic, she will not be able to see fraggles at first.
Lanford can talk in this season.
Jamdolin will reveal that in his youth he was very much a worrywart like Boober, and they will bond over it (Fun is Here to Stay)
When Doc sings Free and High, she will not know she’s singing with the fraggles. Maybe Lambert's powerful pipes will resonate throughout the rock and be heard in the workshop, and she’ll find herself singing along…to a song she never heard before. Magic is infectious, after all. She’ll be a little weirded out by this, and be motivated to seek out answers about spontaneously breaking out into song.
Junior will struggle to make his parents see his point of view about the fraggles. He will make some headway with Ma, when he mentions something he heard Gobo talk about regarding getting advice from the Trash Heap. She will seek this advice herself (Be a Queen)
Just going by song list I can tell it will get heavy in the last few episodes.
Doc will be the sort of ‘main antagonist’ of this season, kind of like Junior’s role in season one. She will do things, albeit unwittingly, to interfere with the delicate the balance of the rock. Conflict will come to a head before Doc and the Fraggles somehow bridge the gap and they become friends. Where Gobo bridged the gap between gorgs and fraggles, it will be up to Red to reach out to Doc (The Hope we Build Together)
As for sorting guest stars…
I mean, obviously Daveed Diggs revives his role as Jamdolin. He’s pretty much a staple of the show. There are also four other new guest stars not assigned roles: Adam Lambert, Brett Goldstien, Adriana DeBose and Catherine O’Hara. There are also four characters we’ve spotted in images.
The redheaded fraggle has spoken in the trailer and her voice is very Catherine O’Hara like. I believe that is her. I also believe she’s more or less a representative of the ‘lost fraggles’, a group of fraggles who got separated from main population way back when. This probably explains her antique looking/renaissance inspired clothes.
Both the tiny glam fraggle and the big glam monster look like fitting characters for Adam Lambert, but I’m giving it to the purple guy, as his only song is with Wembley and Pogey, not a whole auditorium of people.
Between Brett and Ariana, Ariana seems more fitting for the tiny concert fraggle, and Do the Sashay feels more like a showstopper song than Brett’s 2. Which leaves Brett to be the craggle. He is, I suspect, a fill in character for Lyle, functionally. They probably wanted to tell more craggle stories, but weren’t able to get Ed Helms back for the second season.

hi, barbie (swann)! hope you're doing well :) your theme is absolutely ethereal and your blog is an incredible lifesaver!
i wanted to seek your help with finding some fcs for a canon character if that's okay. sorry for the lengthy ask, i am providing context to be on the safe side.
so, this character is amara aquilla aka magma of marvel. to nobody's shock, marvel hasn't defined her ethnicity or heritage clearly, but from my understanding (please take this with a grain of salt, i don't mean to misstate facts and i acknowledge i can be fallible), she's brazilian with italian descent (in terms of nationality rather than ethnicity) in the comics — where she is depicted as white. in the animated show x-men evo, however, she's stated to be african-brazilian.
as someone who's passionate about writing underutilised canon characters and giving them the justice marvel doesn't give usually, i am going to be liberal with my comics portrayal of amara and write her as a woman of colour.
with this being said, do you have some suggestions for her fcs? i'm seeking a fem representing person who's brazilian with african (and maybe italian if possible) descent, has a reasonable amount of content, older than 18, and with blonde hair if possible? i know this is a huge ask, so if you answer this ask or could recommend me some other rph blogs that could help, i would really appreciate that!
thank you, i wish you a very lovely day. <3
𝙝𝙞 𝙗𝙖𝙧𝙗𝙞𝙚! awh, thanks, first of all, so much for the kind words, angel!!! wow omg 🥹 this is definitely a very complicated casting situation, as so often happens with comic book characters lol. admittedly i'm not a marvel girlie so my information is going to be based solely off of the information provided here. to the best of my understanding, you're looking for an 18+ fem/female fc who ideally is afro-brazilian and blonde. i'm going to do my best to meet those specs as exactly as possible, but i'll also be looking for any other blonde afro-latina fcs, or if i stumble across any other woc who are brazilian and blonde. i hope this helps you, peach!! ♡

If there's something i remember about the first time i ever watched West Side Story, it's just how much the scene of Anita in Doc's store hit me. It was the 1961 movie, with Rita Moreno as Anita, and part of the heaviness i remember feeling is tied to her performance though i know it's about more than that. In a story with 3 main character deaths, 3 violent deaths, it's not the violence in those deaths what hit me the most. I didn't cry watching the rumble. I didn't cry watching Tony die, nor Maria's breakdown afterwards. I cried watching Anita's pain while she spit out the words.
"You tell that murderer that Maria's never going to meet him. You tell him that Chino found out about them and shot her. She's dead".
It's been years in between then, watching the story unfold for the first time, and now, watching Spielberg's adaptation. I still find myself caught in Anita's pain. She loves Maria to the point of agreeing to help the man that killed Bernardo, she loves Maria so much that she decides to help the man who she would rather see dead, all while deep in mourning. No time to ease the pain. She decides to help anyway, for love. And her love is met with violence. So much violent cruelty that we watch her break, right there, in front of us.
"She's dead".
The 2021 film is different in many places, including Anita's scene at Doc's, but i loved it. This scene in particular is a good example of how i feel many of those differences complement the original point and add to my love for the story. Like by having the girls from the Jets there. It hit me like hell, watching it. Not because this scene is better than it's former version, not because it one ups it. It hit me like hell because that pain, that visceral fear that struck me watching Anita walk in the store in the 1961 version -the first time that i watched it and every single time i've watched it since-, that feeling struck me all over again, and i got to see it reflected in the faces of the other girls too. In their faces, in their panic. And in their cries. I felt the air choking me, that fear, that god damned fear cause you know. Fucking hell you know. And i knew they felt it too.
It ocurred to me that perhaps that's the thing that separates hate from violence. It's empathy that stops hate from turning violent.
The girls are no exception from the hatred that stains the story. They yell at Anita for speaking spanish, they throw insults just like the Jets. How dare you be here. You don't belong here. I do. And i will tell you just how much you don't have a right to even look me in the eye right now. The divide is there, the hate is there, just the same. They don't second guess any of it until they see it in the boys faces, until they hear the change in their voices and their words. They know what comes next the same way that i know it. And the fear is no longer in just my lungs, no longer in just my throat. It's then that it's not just my fear. It's ours. When the camera frame catches them, i see my fear in their eyes and i know. I just know.
And it would be naive to think that this moment will change everything. That's not how people work. The girls won't change their minds right then and there, and the hatred that has stained them and everything around them their whole lifes won't disappear just like that. That hatred we inherit, and feed into, and make our own either actively or passively, it must be unlearned. But this is how change starts. It starts with empathy.
Empathy is what stops hate from turning violent. So many have asked if it was really necessary to have another West Side Story, but watching it i do think it makes sense to retell the stories, to bring front and center the tales we have already told. And with them, the empathy we find in them. And we hope if we can't heal this hate right now, we can at least stop it's violence until we do.

Me processa".

Bring it On
Okay so I just watched a Bring it On bootleg and I'm gonna say it's one of the more important works of theater in our generation purely for what all the creative team had learned from it.
David Korins (Set Design): the screen work -> DEH, the transforming set stuff -> Hamilton
Lin - Definitely can hear some early Hamilton workshopping in there. Also one of his first massively collaborative projects, leading to Moana, etc.
Andy Blank- Although I have some problems with him as a director, he did a great job combining dance styles which helped in Hamilton and Bandstand.
Tom Kitt - Got him into momentum for If/Then, probably somehow. Ya that one's a stretch but whatever!
And this casttttttt -> Adrienne Warren. Taylor Louderman. Adriana Debose. Baby Jason Gotay. Ugh. Adrienne is gonna win a Tony for sure one day.
Listen to this cast album. Consider this a public service announcement.
