And because I’m a nerd, of course I have more—but this time a bit more niche:
Ching Shih – A former prostitute (allegedly) who married a pirate captain, took over his fleet after his death, and became one of the most prosperous pirates in Chinese history. Give me another Doctor Who pirate story, I’m begging you. Space pirates? Ghost pirates? Time pirates? Just give me pirates—and let her be terrifying.
Adolphe Sax - Invented the saxophone and had multiple assassination attempts made against him over it. Had a literal battle of the bands under the freaking Eiffel Tower tell me that wouldn't be a good conclusion to an episode.
Julie d'Aubigny - Opera singer, duelist, bisexual chaos gremlin. She once broke into a convent to rescue her girlfriend. Please cast Chappell Roan to play her—I need the musical swordfight scene, need it.
Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz - Self-taught scholar, nun, and proto-feminist who defied colonial patriarchy with poetry and science. Imagine the Doctor just losing it over her brain while they tag-team theological takedowns.
Policarpa Salavarrieta – Seamstress by day, spy for the Colombian resistance by night. Used her position to smuggle secrets, recruit rebels, and absolutely school the Spanish royalists. Revolutionary to her last breath. Great set up for a tragic historical ending.
Historical figures I think it'd be neat for the doctor to meet in the show in no particular order
Emily Dickinson – I’d love for the Doctor to have a poetry-off with her. Plus, I think she’d be pretty blasé about the inevitable macabre elements of whatever story involves her.
Joan of Arc – I don’t want her visions to be explained; I want them to remain mysterious, yet still inexplicably help whatever extraterrestrial crisis has caused her path to cross with the comic hobo.
Edgar Allan Poe – For the same reason as Emily: bonus points if the Doctor’s two hearts inspire The Tell-Tale Heart in some way.
Oscar Wilde – I specifically want Fifteen to meet him so they can have a flamboyant gay-off. The banter would be dazzling, and the outfits even more so. Also, the Doctor quoting The Importance of Being Earnest in the middle of a crisis is non-negotiable. If we got Shakespearean Tennant quoting Shakespeare, we absolutely deserve this.
Hatshepsut – A forgotten-but-formidable female pharaoh who ruled with power and grace? The Doctor would absolutely admire her.

i’m probably totally overthinking this, but do the episode subjects for this season relate to the professor hologram? adolphe sax couldn’t be killed, so the hologram is also going to be harder to get rid of (that episode the professor also mentioned that the hologram and algorithm were left unattended in the dumpster). wu zetian was ruthless in becoming emperor, so the hologram will do anything to take the professor’s place. robert liston related to the hologram skinning ryan, so i feel like it’s not too much of a stretch

ok so. adolphe sax's death. now i know almost zero details about this but it seems like if a saxophone player had a grotesque lip swelling that an injection of herbs cured, that would be an infection right? the herbs grow mold, that mold is penicillin, an antibiotic treats the infection and hes fine. plus, he died of pneumonia a few years later, which is also a potential symptom of infection. i am not a doctor but perhaps the "tumor" on his lip was just a really bad infection?

AVeryCanadianFilm: Physics and Jazz
Samuel H. Lawson's notebook: Topic - the importance of equity, diversity, and inclusion in mathematics and physics.
Adolphe Sax (1814 - 1894) was a Belgium musician and inventor, he invented the saxophone around 1840. The saxophone was used by Europeans to make various types of European music. I seriously doubt anyone in Europe could have predicted the kind of music made by John Coltrane, Charlie Parker et al., using the saxophone. Bartolomeo Cristofori (1655-1731), an Italian, invented the piano. The piano was used by Europeans to make various types of European music. I seriously doubt anyone in Europe could have predicted the kind of music made by Jelly Roll Morton, Art Tatum et al., using the piano, and so on and so forth. The point is obvious. Instruments and techniques created by people of one culture are free to be used by people from a different culture to create something new and worthwhile, if they are given the opportunity.

Saxophone History Podcast Episodes 1 & 2
I’m very pleased to be publishing the first couple of episodes of a new podcast I’ve been working on for a while. It’s called The Saxophone History Podcast and the idea is to take a look at the lives of the most interesting people who have played the saxophone throughout history. It’s a thoughtful, researched, and slightly irreverent look at our collective history as saxophonists. I’m going to…
