As the Romulan Admiral Alidar Jarok so aptly put it, "Oh what a fool I've been, to come looking for courage in the lair of cowards."

It is for her that I am here. Not to destroy the Romulan Empire, but to save it. For months, I tried desperately to persuade the High Command that another war would destroy the Empire. They got tired of my arguments. Finally I was censured, sent off to command some distant sector. This was my only recourse. I will never see my child smile again. She will grow up believing that her father is a traitor. But she will grow up. If you act, Picard. If we stop the war before it begins."

RIP Admiral Jarok and Senator Cretak, victims of Romulan-Federation political bullshit. They both deserved better.

Reviewing Star Trek TNG - S3E10 "The Defector"
Tumblr media
THE PREMISE
The Enterprise receives a distress call from a Romulan scout ship being chased towards the Neutral Zone by a Romulan warbird. They move to intercept it, the warbird leaves, and they beam the scout ship's pilot aboard. The pilot introduces himself as Sub-Lieutenant Setal (played by James Sloyan), an unimportant logistics clerk seeking to defect to the Federation after discovering plans for a secret Romulan installation in the Neutral Zone capable of sustaining a large fleet, which will be ready to launch within forty-eight hours.
The crew are suspicious of Setal's claims, and Captain Picard orders an investigation into his reliability. Meanwhile, the Federation informs them that the Romulans want to secure Setal's return as soon as possible.
MY REVIEW
God, there's a lot of Romulan episodes in this season, isn't there?
I will admit that I was disappointed to find out that the defecting Romulan wasn't Bochra from "The Enemy." You know, the episode I reviewed before suddenly disappearing for like two months? That episode?
Anyway, it would've been interesting to see how Bochra and Geordi could've developed their unlikely friendship. But I guess that's what I get for expecting serialised storytelling from a mostly episodic series.
Tumblr media
Fortunately, Setal proves to be an interesting enough character in his own right, with the crew unsure if he's being sincere (if there is an installation, it is awfully convenient that the Federation's sensors just so happened to miss it) or if this is merely a ploy to get the Federation to attack and look like aggressors. But then they're suddenly interrupted by Setal's ship exploding.
Setal explains that he set the ship to auto-destruct before he left to prevent it from being captured, insisting that he's not a traitor... even though he's actively trying to sabotage the operations of the empire he works for. His bullshit attempts to avoid choosing sides are a reoccurring theme in this episode.
Back on the bridge, the crew are becoming increasingly skeptical of Setal's claims - they detect no unusual activity in the supposed location of the Romulan installation, and they begin to suspect that the situation they found Setal in may have been faked.
Picard is then informed by Admiral Haden that "Sub-Lieutenant Setal" is actually Admiral Jarok, and should be considered an unreliable source of information. Jarok refuses to talk to Picard, and his hypocrisy arises once again. Fortunately, Picard calls him out on his bullshit.
"You already betrayed your people, Admiral! You made your choices, sir! You're a traitor! Now, if the bitter taste of that is unpalatable to you, I am truly sorry, but I will not risk my crew because you think you can dance on the edge of the Neutral Zone. You crossed over, Admiral. You make yourself comfortable with that."
Have I mentioned how great Patrick Stewart is when he gets to act angry?
It's here that Jarok explains his motivation for defecting: he realised that another war could destroy the Romulan Empire, but the Romulan High Command wouldn't listen and sent him off to an irrelevant sector, causing him to defect. And all because he wanted to create a better world for his daughter... this is sounding awfully similar to Chorgan's motivation in the last episode.
Tumblr media
Okay, to this episode's credit, Jarok is fleshed out more than Chorgan was, including a nice scene with Data in the holodeck earlier where he sees an image of Romulus, plus some lamentations about how he'll never be able to return home and have his daughter see him as a traitor. It's just weird how these last three episodes have felt kind of repetitive in the writing department.
Anyway, Jarok ends up agreeing to cooperate, and the Enterprise heads for the agreed rendezvous point at Nelvana III... and finds absolutely no indication of the secret base Jarok mentioned. Jarok is stunned, since he claims to have seen messages and timetables describing it, but Picard suspects that the High Command was simply testing his loyalty by feeding him disinformation.
Tumblr media
We learned something today.
The Enterprise prepares to leave, but two warbirds decloak and attack them. They're hailed by Commander Tomalak (also from The Enemy, funnily enough), who confirms their suspicions that the Romulans were tricking them into appearing as the aggressors and demands that they surrender as prisoners of war. Fortunately all is not lost, because Picard gets Worf to signal three Birds of Prey to decloak.
Yeah, in an earlier scene Picard had called Worf into his ready room for some reason, and I guess Picard was arranging for the Klingons to give them a secret escort? That's basically all the buildup that this little scene gets, because it's obvious that they just wrote themselves into a corner and needed a quick resolution.
Tumblr media
Anyhoo, Tomalak withdraws, the Enterprise heads back to Federation space, and Jarok realises that his sacrifice was for nothing and he kills himself using the 24th century equivalent of a cyanide pill. He left a letter to his wife and child, even with the knowledge that it couldn't be delivered. Fortunately, this gives us a nice conclusion with Picard musing that if other Romulans had Jarok's courage, then one day they might be able to.
Well, that's nice.
Also, I couldn't find a way to work this into the review, but the episode begins with Data performing Henry V on the holodeck alongside Patrick Stewart in heavy makeup while Captain Picard observes.
Tumblr media
Look at him. It's like he's meeting up with his friends for a LARPing session. It’s precious.
Maybe this is part of Picard's master plan to get all of the senior staff interested in Shakespeare so they'll agree to perform with him? We shall see...
7/10 - A good enough episode that ultimately ends up feeling kind of pointless.
