Cyberpunk: Edgerunners turns 2 today!

If the multiverse is real then there’s probably a timeline where Cyberpunk Edgerunners was cancelled after the backlash of 2077’s launch. Imagine what the memes would be like in that universe…then again, almost everyone forgot that there was gonna be an anime or ignored Edgerunners. Still, the memes would be ruthless, especially when CDPR is working with such a prestigious studio like Trigger.

I think an awful lot about Splinter believing in the start of the series that he'd lost his humanity.

For the sake of someone named Pete, I will go through the events in chronological order for once-

In Lone Rat and Cubs, Splinter tells the turtles about their time spent running from the Kraang before they found their forever home, and we learn that Splinter didn't easily slip into his new role. Sure, he cared for the turtles, kept them fed and sheltered them from the elements, but he still called them "creatures" and "turtles" before naming them. He didn't see this as an opportunistic situation where he miraculously became a father to a second batch of kids, but rather that he'd fallen into a pool of misfortune and would need to live with this new form while protecting himself and the turtles.

"What terrible deed did I do in a past life that such a curse has befallen me?"

As he considers the turtles' growth and the possibility of a future with them, he then begins to view himself as a potential father. He explains that he wondered if he had the discipline to be a proper father, especially after the loss of his first family, and he realizes it was something he wanted to be regardless of discipline or odd circumstances.

And so, he claims the turtles as his own, and accepts his role as their father.

Though he'd grown accustomed to being a mutant rat over the years, he still draws a line between "Hamato Yoshi" and "Splinter" without knowing it, albeit a blurry and ephemeral one drawn in ever changing sand.

We hear Splinter in the second episode of the series talking about the loss of his family, his home, and his own name. He more or less tells Leo that being mutated erased whatever connection he formally had to the name "Hamato," and the idea is further supported by a similar and more somber scene in I, Monster. Splinter fights off the Rat King's control as he again laments that his entire clan and family, even his humanity, is gone, and he has nothing but the turtles left for him in this new life. Fortunately, he retains his sense of self post mutation, and he's presented from the beginning of the series as one who's in control of himself, both to his sons and friends of theirs, as well as any enemy that comes their way.

However, that presentation of control gives us a bit of a look into his psyche and allows us to consider the idea of him still struggling to come to terms with not being human anymore.

With the introduction of the Rat King, he's taunted by a potential loss of that control for the first time and it shakes him to his core. It makes sense for him to be shaken up since all that'd be left without him is a mindless, humanoid rat who'd lost touch with the human it used to be. Which is why it's so compelling that his sons, particularly Leo, are so adamant about reinforcing the fact that his mutation doesn't erase who he is. It's incredibly noteworthy what Leo says to him when trying to break the Rat King's control over him, "Remember who you are!"

Not who he once was, or the human he used to be, but who he is.

They never viewed Splinter as a separate being from Hamato Yoshi.

The boys aren't strangers to Splinter's old life before them, and they're very much aware of everything he'd lost; the guy talks about certain things frequently enough for them to know his tragedies and recite them without skipping a letter. It's his recollections of the tribulations he suffered through that helped them understand that his life with them is undeniably disconnected from his life with Tang Shen, but not unrelated.

He's still Hamato Yoshi, and his place will always be with his family.

Having been defeated by Splinter, the Rat King runs to find another way of tormenting him, and his perfect target is fear.

Though we got a brief look into this during their first encounter with Falco's twisted appearance, it's not until Of Rats and Men that we get further insight into another layer of Splinter's concern with his rat half: the repercussions that could result from the loss of control.

Throughout all of his years of raising his sons, not once did he ever treat them with the intention to frighten them and make them wary of his every move. The Rat King can easily use that fear to his advantage and weaken Splinter's mental stability enough to figure out how to make mutants similar to him. And he truly makes use of that fear by turning Splinter into his personal puppet.

There's still a considerable amount of concern on the turtles' end that pierces through that fear though. After Splinter teleports across the room to distance himself, Leo looked ready to leap to his side, and the others, despite being threatened literal seconds earlier, remain where they are and are equally concerned.

Eventually, the Rat King strikes again and everyone begins to piece together what's going on when Splinter loses it. Mikey is absolutely terrified and staggered by what happened, and Raph and Donnie tread with caution while Leo and April are the first ones to approach Splinter.

The TV gives them extra confirmation that Falco is back, and to everyone's surprise, Splinter refuses to help them fight Falco, even when Casey is dragged down a manhole by one of the mutated rats in their first attempt to clear the streets. It's not an easy choice for Splinter to make because we see how guilty he feels for his refusal, but the gang doesn't fault him for refusing either. No matter how much they want for Splinter to join them, he's right to worry about what the Rat King, now stronger than before, could force him to do.

April speaks for everyone though when she tells him they all believe in him. They make it known that they aren't afraid of what may happen, and they especially aren't afraid of him.

Unsurprisingly, Splinter changes his mind at the last minute, and, with the help of a recently mutated cat, he chases Falco down to deal with him once and for all. Protecting his family takes priority over his doubts, and by the end of the episode, he overcomes his fear of the Rat King controlling him.

He has his humanity, and that's what makes him different from the rat Falco constantly made him out to be.

And for the first time in the series, in The Lonely Mutation of Baxter Stockman, he says out loud that he has his humanity and is thankful he's fortunate enough to still have it when others lose it post mutation.

I previously went a bit more in depth about it in this post but the boys have witnessed Splinter grappling with being a rat, particularly with the Rat King's meddling, and Donnie sincerely believed giving him retromutagen would be something he'd want. This was clearly an idea that's been weighing on Donnie's mind for a while considering that he seemingly kept quiet about his plan until he completed the retromutagen, and he's the most upset when he has to use the remaining dosage for Kirby.

But Splinter tells him and the other turtles he's content as he is and wouldn't do anything to change himself this far in. And the boys all seem content with his answer.

With the invasion of the Kraang and his defeat at the hands of the Shredder, Splinter again comes face to face with his mutated genes, and there's no Rat King stringing him along this time. He'd been swallowed by delirium with the lack of familial support to pull him out of it, and he became spiritually disconnected from his body as a result. The gang is initially caught off guard by Splinter's state, but they quickly get over it and work to subdue him.

While the boys are pulled away into battle, April uses her powers to sift through Splinter's memories and, after showing him the time he asked her to train with him, we see a memory with the turtles, Karai, and his only family portrait from before his mutation:

Seeing his family is what manages to bring him back to his senses.

We the audience, as well as Splinter, figured that was the end of his troubles with being a mutant rat, but Shredder decided to bathe in some super juice and sent Splinter careening a thousand feet into a dark cavern, the same one Splinter sent Falco down two seasons ago. Being thrown into near total darkness with a fairly debilitating injury and fever was the perfect recipe for him to begin hallucinating, and he believes the Rat King is attacking him when he's most vulnerable. But just when he feels himself slipping further away, his mind goes straight to the day his sons celebrated their 15th mutation day, and just beyond them is Tang Shen.

He regains his clarity, grasps that Falco's been dead the whole time, and is immensely relieved to see Donnie and Mikey after what he'd been through.

"Perhaps a teacher, but never my master."

Falco inadvertently taught Splinter that he's always had his humanity, and his family serves as a reminder of that fact by remaining a constant and significant pillar for him.

His family is his humanity.

The farmer's market was a bit more crowded today in terms of both vendors and buyers. Although most of the produce was sold earlier in the fall, there were still fruits and vegetables that had been harvested from the gardening that had occurred the year prior. A few years after the end of the Rumbling, the world was slowly getting pieced back together.

Walking from your house to the market and then through the market to the bakery was going to be a bit of a longer journey, so you were pushing Levi through the lineup of vendors as he sat in his wheelchair. It was ultimately for the best. Since he was seated, he was able to sit with your 7-month old in his lap, although your child was beginning to get restless from the amount of people around you. He wanted nothing more than to escape Levi's lap and crawl around, but Levi had a firm grip on him.

You had originally said that you were only wanting to pick up some vegetables and hang out at the bakery for the afternoon, but Levi wasn't dumb. It was too much of a coincidence that you had been this insistent on going out on his birthday. You had something planned.

His eyes went from staring at the bakery off in the distance down to your child that was busy babbling and tugging on his shirt. He had been fine as Levi occasionally distracted him by chatting with him or poking him, but it was clear that he was getting restless.

Levi heard you shuffling around behind him and you reached over his shoulder while holding a small plush shaped like a cat, handing it to your child to play with.

You ruffled your baby's jet black hair, which matched the hue of his father's. It hadn't thickened up enough for you to be able to style it yet, but you knew that your heart was going to melt as soon as you saw your baby wearing the same undercut as Levi.

Levi's nose immediately scrunched up as he gave his child a wary look the minute the teething toddler began gnawing at the plushie, very quickly covering part of the stuffed animal in his own slobber.

"Would you rather him be gnawing on his hands that have been touching every surface we've seen since leaving the house?"

The only response you heard from Levi was a gentle grunt as he acknowledged your comment.

You wheeled Levi and your baby over to a corner table on the outside porch of the bakery as soon as you arrived before walking inside to pick up the order that you had placed ahead of time.

You knew that Levi was not one to enjoy gifts, but you wanted to at least do something to celebrate. Plus, the three of you needed to get out of the house and go somewhere other than the teashop.

"No way," you uttered affectionately as you redirected your child's grabby hands away from the pastry cake you held in your hands. "I didn't even set this thing down yet."

While your child looked overly excited for the sugary treat that he technically wasn't even supposed to have yet, Levi held a skeptical expression, with one eyebrow raised higher than the other.

"Oh c'mon, it's like your first day off in what...two weeks?" you asked in an exasperated tone as you sat down. "I know you're very adamant about keeping the teashop together, but you should at least be allowed to celebrate your birthday."

"I've had days off."

You scoffed, clearly not believing him.

"Yeah, and you choose to spend them at the shop despite the fact that Gabi and Falco have been helping out."

"And leave the fate of the shop to those brats? Fuck no."

A scowl quickly appeared on your face as you visually berated him for cursing in front of your child, although you already knew that he didn't really care too much about that concept of not cursing in front of him.

He tightened his grip on his child that was getting increasingly fussy and turned him around to look into his eyes that matched yours in color.

"You have never made a fuss about your birthday, have you?" he asked with a serious expression. "Maybe you should have a chat with your mother."

You gently smacked Levi's shoulder with an annoyed, but also subtly amused look.

"He hasn't had a birthday yet, you dumbass."

You vaguely heard him scoff at your comment, amused at the fact that you cursed almost immediately after judging him for cursing within earshot of your baby.

"Just accept the 'happy birthday', you asshole."

Like her mother, she loves to be a troublemaking rebel and bend the rules to succeed. However, she does have a habit of expecting doom from every encounter, she is also hypochondriac like her dad, but deep down she does have a softer side when she trusts the squadron, her friends, and family, especially when she’s selfless, but not when it comes to her guitar that she never lets anyone touch it. Especially Apollo.

Marceline: Being the musician she is, Octavia takes up the talent of being a musician like her mother who loves to play music with her axe guitar that she has as she loves to sing and create music on her free time. Especially when the songs she sings have a meaning to it, for example “That Distant Shore from Steven Universe” is Octavia loves that song very much cause she has a goal in mind and her feelings of her time spent with the Storm Hawks and the Condor.

Maomao: Octavia practically focuses on learning to survive and thrive in whatever way her environment demands her to, just like Maomao. But what catches the inspiration is when Octavia is unaffected by Apollo’s charms along with many of the male sky knights charms, but besides that she is also possesses a insatiable curiosity, sharp witted, calm, and mature enough to know how to read people and situations but a large part of her is how she is accepting kindness and forming relationships all around her. But beware, she tends to hiss whenever she gets irritated by Apollo’s comments when he tries to be flirty.

Chie Satonaka: Octavia has an enormous strong sense of justice and desire to protect others, especially when it comes to her family and friends, mainly her mother. Exactly like Chie, she does not hesitate to intervene and speak out, she wants to protect her home terra and Atmos. She also constantly training her sky-fu moves and challenges herself when she uses her powers and the binding thanks to Cyclonis and Virgo’s training including overcoming her fear of losing her mother after hearing what happened to her grandmother, Marietta.

Roxie: Being the punkish and rebellious Pokemon trainer she is, fits very perfectly with Octavia since she has a habit of breaking the rules and doing things her own way. Not to mention that Roxie is also a musician as well, she is rather determined and stubborn whenever her father gives her a stern lecture of how dangerous it could be if she decides to rebel, however she still cares for her father and tries to stay out of trouble. Sometimes.

Nora Valkyrie: Even though Octavia has a gloomy, rebellious, and punkish side of her, she also developed a cheerful and bubbly personality just like Nora. Besides her personality Nora is extremely skilled in combatant, able to fight with a large hammer while performing acrobatic flips and spins with minimal effort, just like Octavia who developed that skill from her mother’s training, not to mention skilled marksman when she need to throw her bombs at the target giving her the opportunity to knock her enemies out with a sleepy gas or stink bomb, however she tends to also use her glitter and paint bombs to blind the enemy as she seizes the opportunity to knock down her enemies with her axe guitar.

Chuuya Nakahara: Just like her mother, Octavia inherited her mother’s ability to manipulate gravity around her, allowing her to manipulate and make gravitation just like Chuuya Nakahara. Not to mention how Octavia can alter the gravity of anything she touches, along with standing and walking upsides down from the ceiling. The boots she wears are what allow her to change the gravity around her, Red for air pressure and blue for gravity. On the plus side, it makes her stylish and fashionably fabulous in those boots.

I remember when I first started watching the show I had seen an interview w either David chase or one of the directors who was like we instantly knew it had to be them because they had this little thing called chemistry... and I was genuinely baffled reading that because I was like they do? and then I realized they are so fucking seamless that I forgot they were actors EVERY SINGLE TIME like they are so seamless that it was bizarre to me to step back and think of them as two people like doing their craft. anyway thats on the meta level in terms of them in the show I will never forget when miss Falco said what they have is true love and forever love and I was like Selina Meyer nervous laughter jpg. but then the more that I watched (and rewatched) and thought, the more every time I'm like. yeah. it is. bc I genuinely do think. in a world where there is no intelligent design and most CERTAINLY no soulmates, they come very near to defying that. the petty dramas they enact every day are the dramas that have been happening since the beginning of time and will continue to happen wherever marriage is an institution. the best thing the sopranos does is the everyday paired with the high drama and they are the best example of that, their marriage is both a functional societal agreement that they each profit from and this animal of its own. theres no Tony without carmela and theres no carmela without Tony. 🎄 Happy Birthday Levi, Merry Christmas Y/N 🎁

It was a really busy day at the cafe and I was in the back cleaning some dishes lost in the feeling of Christmas humming along to the carol playing over the speaker. "Y/N you need to come up front. We need your help.....please. I heard Levi yell. " I will be there in a sec." I yelled back drying my hands from doing the dishes. I put on my apron heading to the front. I was stopped in my tracks when I saw the store was empty. "MERRY CHRISTMAS!" everyone yelled when I walked in from the back. "What is this? I thought we still had costumes?" I asked as Gabi runs up to me giving me one of the Christmas cookies.

Levi was rubbing the back of his neck. "I was thinking about having a Christmas party for you for doing such a good job." Tears fill my water line. "Levi that was so sweet thank you." I walk up to him giving him a hug and kissing his cheek. "Can I get one?" Jean asked pointing to his cheek. "Only if you want to loss your job and get an ass kicking." Levi deadpans, I kiss hie cheek again. "Sorry Jean but I can give you a hug." The staff laughed.

"So what do you have planned for this party." Eren said from the back having his arm crossed. "Well first you guys can go change out of your nasty uniforms." Levi said as he untied his apron. Eren, Jean and Armin head to the men's room when Mikasa, Annie and Gabi head to the woman's. "Reiner is picking up Falco and the kids. Erwin will be by later with Connie and Sasha. I also asked your dad if he will take the kids tomorrow night." He whispered in my ear. My heart and stomach did a backflip. "Plus I got myself a birthday/Christmas gift for us when they leave."

As the party went on all I could think about the gift Levi got. 'Was it the new green lace set that I saw on Adam&Eve's, website last month or was it something else.' I thought to myself as I was cleaning up after the party. As I was lost in thought I didn't hear Levi walk up behind me putting his arms around me. And in all honesty I really didn't mean to hurt him. He just scared me. That's what I told him the hole way to the hospital after I broke his nose and dislocated his arm. "Sunflower really I'm okay truly. I'm somewhat glad you remembered the defense moves I taught you when you work at night by yourself." I looked at him tears falling down my face.

After being there for 4 hours we were sent home. Levi in a sling and me with a bruise ego. "Mommy was funny when she flipped daddy like that. Uncle Erwin couldn't stop laughing." My daughter told my dad when we got home. "Yeah and Uncle Jean looked like he was about to be sick when he saw dad's arm." Okay you two, get ready for bed or Santa wouldn't stop at the house." Levi told the kids as he got him a water from the fridge. "Here let me help.... I was interrupted by Levi opening his water bottle. "See I still can do things you need to calm down. I'm fine really." He put the water bottle down on the counter. I took a deep breath then looked at my dad. We're good dad I will call you if we need anything. He nodded walked over, kissed me on the head and walked out heading home.

After we got the kids to bed and a very long night of me not sleeping Christmas morning came with a lot of screams, giggles and thank you (for Santa too), we got the kids all packed up and sent off to my dad. As I was picking up I felt myself started to get upset and tears start to from in my eyes. Knowing something was wrong Levi came into the living room with a cup of mint tea. "You really to stop betting yourself over this. You did nothing wrong. If anything you could feel proud." I looked at him over my cup mid sip.
