okay i just got into f1 at the end of the last season. Can you explain some things to me- a hesitant Mclaren fan??
Basically why is the team so good this year and if Zak has proven the success of rookies, why don’t more teams follow suit? i’m so curious and also i wanna know everything abt Oscar and his war with Alpine?? Is Zak the team principle? why is he always there if not??
This one isn’t abt Mclaren and even tho i know it’s controversial i still don’t really understand but; What exactly happened in Abu Dhabi 2021??
alright so i typed up this whole thing once and then tumblr deleted it so now you’re getting the shorter and more annoyed version, apologies
here we go, more drama this time mclaren edition
zak brown is the ceo of mclaren racing. some ceos are also team principals (horner, i think toto?) but he is not. he’s also not an Owner i don’t think. but basically he’s the ceo of all branches of mclaren racing including f1, formula e, indycar, super e and esports. admittedly, he is a more involved team ceo. like he appears regularly on their social media pages and at the races and on the pit wall and all that, but he’s not the team principal. that’s andrea stella. andrea is in charge of the f1 team, zak is in charge of all the mclaren teams.
teams need three things to do well, good drivers, good car and good team. supposedly this year mclaren has all three.
lando and oscar get along and have proven they are both good drivers. they are on the younger side (lando is 24 and oscar is 22) and i think they’re the youngest driver pairing on the grid, but they have both proven they can do the job. they are also willing to work together, as in, none of them threw a fit if one had to pass the other and also they’re in it for the team first, personal success second. which is key. you can’t have your drivers feuding cause then they do stupid shit (ie nico rosberg and lewis hamilton)
oscar and lando have both driven the car at this point and they said it went well. but most people say the first test goes well. however, they started shit last year and then made upgrades to get better so the general hope this year is that they will start good and get better. i think lando said in one of his interviews that he was something along the lines of cautiously optimistic (he doesn’t like to say he’s confident because then it looks bad if they suck) but we will know more about the car at pre season testing this coming week.
as for rookies. not everyone signs them cause they’re a risk. and if you’re a big team with an good name and reputation then you might not want to risk it. this past year there were three rookies. nyck devries who failed to score a single point at alpha tauri and was swapped out mid season for daniel ricciardo. logan sargent who scored only one point and it was because two people in front of his dnfd. admittedly he was in a williams, but his teammate manages to score 20 something points so. and then oscar, who i think finished with 80 something points ans a few podiums. oscar was in the better car so he naturally did better, but also he still could have flopped tremendously. and that’s why a lot of the bigger teams like to have the new guys proven themselves first in a shit car cause then if they’re in a good car they’ll really do well. signing a rookie tho is a risk, as it’s been a rare occasion for them to win anything or even podium in their first season. and that’s not great if you’re trying to win a title.
when lando was signed to mclaren he had already been involved with the team for a few years. he was in f3 in 2017 when mclaren noticed him and then made him a test and reserve driver in 2018. now some people (haters) point out that Oh Lando Was A Pay Driver until he was in f1. (meaning, his dad is a millionaire and he basically backed him his whole racing career. so he didn’t have to get sponsors because he had his dad. this is basically what lance stroll does) but when he got into f1 he said he didn’t want to do that anymore because he doesn’t think that that’s what you should do in f1. some people think he only got his seat cause of this, but objectively, mclaren noticed his good performance, not the money part and in any case, his dad doesn’t sponsor him anymore. in any case tho, he had already driven mclaren cars in tests prior to getting his seat in 2019. he was also quite young. 18. but he also had a decent rookie year (not quite as good as oscar but also the car was more shit then than it was this past year).
the oscar piastri alpine drama is basically that he was alpines test and reserve driver for 2022, exactly like how lando was for mclaren. alpine was losing fernando alonso for 2023 cause he was going to aston martin and they were like oh this is fantastic we can sign oscar now and give him an f1 seat. oscar had been in the alpine drivers academy for a few years when he was in the junior leagues (which basically means that they sunk a lot of money into his career). however, aparently alpine announced that oscar was driving for them in 2023 before he had signed his contract. and oscar didn’t appreciate this.
mclaren had unexpectedly an open seat after daniel ricciardos contract was terminated early and i guess oscar had been in contract talks with them. because he tweeted this:
which is nothing short of iconic. then alpine tried and failed to sue him for 4M USD. he dodged a bullet by going to mclaren.
and then abu dhabi 2021. without getting into it too much cause that’s insane lewis hamilton and max verstappen went into the race with the same amount of points. it was the last race of the year so whoever won that race was going to win the world championship title. there a lot that happened at that race that was weird but among the weirdest thing was that towards the end of the race there was a yellow flag, and a safety car. which means that all the cars got close to eachotjer again. now, hamilton had a comfortable lead over max at this point because there were five lapped cars between them. basically, those five cars were a lap behind hamilton and verstappen. sometimes on safety cars they allow the lapped cars to unlap themselves (go around the safety car and back to the back of the grid so they’re in the correct order). and for some reason. they allowed only the five lapped cars between hamilton and verstappen to unlap themselves (which is weird and unfair) and thus verstappen ended up winning. the whole race was bonkers and batshit tho and i would highly reccomend watching that drive to survive episode because they actually show the bonkersness pretty well.

I'm killing myself tonight😭😭
according to an article by motorsport.com , paul said that he has never considered to do two years in f2 because of fundings, and that if he can't step up he's going to consider other options
PLEASE someone find him a seat, we can't loose him to formula e 😭😭😭😭
actually heartbreaking
i think i wont be able to listen to the pod at all bcs i will just end up crying (haven't even managed to read the entire article, just parts) but like..... w h a t
"I certainly won’t have the possibility to do the series again – at least with my current funding." – ??!?!?!?!?!? HELLO ???
"We have approached this year as a one-year plan. We never approached F2 as taking the first year to develop and then go for it in the second year. I’ve taken the mindset that this is the year and that is why I’ve been pushing so hard with myself and the team." – OI then why have u said that you're not here to win this year? buddy???????
idk what to think or feel, im so... likeeee i always saw a formula e switch as something understandable and maybe positive but i was assuming that would be after another f2 season :( so ig there could be some truth behind the rumors abt him going to fe already this year.....
#as in. missing the last two (?) rounds of f2#paul dont do this to me#my heart is actually aching#HEY ALL U STUPID F1 TEAMS LOOK HERE#YOU HAVE A SUPER GOOD BOY JUST BEGGING FOR UR ATTENTION#LOOK AT HIM!!!! LET HIM IN#okay thats it for me. bye#asks!#anon!#paul aron

This holds, a lot of news
> Porsche now wants to keep Da Costa and he's technically under contract for Season 11 too. But the whole thing that transpired might see Da Costa leave anyway. Especially cuz he wants to return to WEC and Jota is close to getting a good deal in WEC
> Vandoorne is likely to be on the move. So far talks have taken place with Envision. Who would leave for his place is not clear. But Buemi might end his Formula E career after this season to focus on WEC and F1
> Frijns has similar struggles obviously cuz of his BMW contract and Envision doesn't want to lose both drivers to a clash again. Now Peugeot is a little easier so they could decide to run two drivers so Vandoorne can do the Berlin races.
> Opposed to Buemi in the article it doesn't seem as clear cut that Robin might be heading out of Formula E. His seat with Envision might also depend on results in Portland and London.
> Nissan looks set to give Fenestraz another year despite Hughes performances possibly giving him a reach to the factory seat. Hughes is on the radar for other teams but for now it seems like he might go for another year with McLaren
> The ideal deal is a Hypercar Manufacturer deal and a customer deal in FE. Which is extremely hard to find for the likes of Da Costa, Müller and Vandoorne. According to The Race only Maserati and Abt might have some wiggle room for this.
> Envision is not likely to keep both drivers. The team needs a chance performance wise but also can't afford to lose both drivers due to a crash again.
> It seems at least either Buemi or Frijns is leaving under the banner of the WEC/FE clash. The wording in the article makes it seem Buemi is more likely to leave out of the two and completely leave Formula E behind.

Could you explain formula e to me please as Paul Aron is racing this weekend
OK so im not necessarily great at explaining things but a basic weekend run down is
Friday
-Shakedown
-FP1 (30 mins i think)
Saturday
-FP2 (30 mins i think)
-Qualifying
-Race 1 ~ 40 laps, 6 mins of attack (4-2, 3-3, or 2-4 splits)
Sunday
-FP3 (30 mins i think)
-Qualifying
-Race 2 ~ 38 laps, 4 mins of attack (3-1, 2-2, or 1-3 splits)
FP sessions are exactly as you'd expect (if they arent the 30mins theyre 45)
Quali is in 2 sections, first the group stages - 2, 12 (i think) min sessions with the drivers split into 2 groups based on championship position (basically odd is one, even is the other) with the top 4 of each group going through to the duels. And then the duels, which are 1 laps shootouts until the top drivers from group A and group B go against each other for pole.
The races are in a lot of ways just races, except with 1000% more chaos a good 95% of the time, the biggest differences are -
Attack Mode, which is the FE equivalent of drs/p2p, except drivers have to push a button to "activate" it, and then go off line to actually gain attack mode, this is where the main strategy comes into play. It is an increase in energy from 300kW to 350kW, and it has to be activated twice in the race, notably in Monaco Jehan failed to activate it at all, and received a 10 secind stop go penalty post race (48s added to his race time). It will cause drivers to lose postiins pretty frequently so its important to make sure you hit the button and go over the 3 loops on track the first time(s) you intended to in order to not lose positions unnecessarily.
No pit stops unless there is a problem hence why attack mode is the main strategy bit. Also front wings arent vital so if it completely comes off and isnt at risk of coming off under the car, theyll probs just keep going without it.
SC, under if the race is under safety car, and or full course yellow, for a certain amount of time (in relation to a reference lap time set based on each track, for Berlin its 2min45s) laps will be added for the first 80% of the race, any sc or fcy after that point will not result in added laps. There is a maximum of 5 added laps per race.
Energy management is a huge part of FE it can sometimes lead to peloton (i think that's the word i mean) style racing with drivers not wanting to lead for to long which can be a bit annoying, but we do get a good dose of chaos each weekend, especially in the last few laps which is always fun. And the mid pack will always be in some sort of fight.
In terms of where to watch your best bet is going to the FE website (or app) and checking for your country. FP sessions are free on youtube and show on the app/website too. There's a predictor game each race which is fun and on the app, as well as driver radios during the race.
Paul's making his debut with Envision, who are the reigning teams champions of formula e. Season 10 hasnt necessarily had the best start for them, but it hasnt been terrible, with best finishes of P2 at the opening round in Mexico and at Race 2 in Diriyah. Envision is a customer team of Jaguar TCS racing who supply their power train, and who the other Envision debut, Joel Eriksson, is the reserve driver for. There's definitely the possibility for points, with a car capable of podiums with its usual drivers, and a power train that can win races and is currently topping the teams standings, a good quali, and avoiding the chaos (much easier said than done) is vital, but definitely doable for him, especially given how his rookie f2 season is going (i say like these cars arent entirely different beasts). Envision clearly has faith in him, and chaos means literally anything is possible (like an abt almost got a podium the other week, truly anything is possible here)
We're also blessed in Formula E land that we have a bunch of lovely people who put a lot of time into creating guides and gathering info for people interested in FE, the mains ones im aware of are:
@formulawah 's bad guide to formula e season 10 - by bad it isnt bad its silly and funny and something to look forward to each season, they also post on twitter about fe and have a blog they post on
and
@robinfrinjs 's formula e, an intro to season 10 - this goes into more detail about the cars and how theyve changed through the gens and has more info on sessions and how a weekend is run. They have a discord full of wonderful people that love fe too.
@formulaesource doesnt really post much over here anymore, but theyre incredibly active on twitter, and are attending this weekend. Theyre pretty much always up to date on how long races and such are gonna be and a great source for updates on penalties and such, and just changes to the formula e world in general.
Hopefully this is somewhat helpful and anything i havent remembered to include can be explained elsewhere or just send another ask and i shall do my best to help you figure out this chaos child of a racing series. Fingers crossed for a decent weekend for Paul 💚💚💚
#anon <3#asks#formula e#fe#paul aron#hopefully this is helpful#those guides are a life saver#even with this being my 3rd season watching they help you stay up to date and learn things you didnt know before#if you can watch some old races on youtube i would recommend doing that especially berlin ones just so you know what to expect#its fun times over here though#i will cry over 20/22 driver losing out on a win#tonio especially is getting bullied by the racing gods this year#chaos is usually good chaos but the crashes can be pretty nasty sometimes#and we have had quite a few hand injuries in the last 2ish years#but 99% of the time its good vibes

Sometimes I don’t understand. For me it’s a shame too, because what is more important for me is talking about family, the work we have done. idk which feeder series I should skip so here:
the lore is that I get signed to red bull's jr program and phm/aix (probably carlin that was bought out for a year and went back to being carlin after)(it'd be funny if it was alpine cuz ppl would joke abt alpine fumbling oscar and then me), and they sign me in one of the above series before being dropped for being young, a girl, and causing a dangerous incident on track (some pay driver insulted me, so I lap him and crash him out landing us both a dnf and bye bye car) and when asked about it, I'm like "Well, I'll be back. And PHM is going to R-E gret dropping me" (the last bit is said very sarcastically, and it gets laughs, and I pull it off). My seat is given to another pay driver (no surprise I hate on untalented paid drivers when I reach f1 haha) before getting signed to prema a few weeks later for freca/f3/f2 and absolutely devouring with no academy backing, championship winner type thing. later I also become an f1a driver, but drop it after winning the championship in my rookie year (you notice a pattern, I've won like every jr formula in my rookie year and also won in okj at like 12)
(aix gets this suffering because joshua dursken's engine is annoyingly good, and they became a team earlier in my dr)

Formula E: Cassidy secures victory in second Berlin round
Formula E: Cassidy secures victory in second Berlin round By Balazs Szabo on 23 Apr 2023, 15:00 Nick Cassidy took his first win in the current Formula E season in this weekend’s second Berlin E-Prix, beating Jake Dennis by only four tenths of a second. F1Technical’s Balázs Szabó reports on the Sunday Berlin race of the 2022/2023 FIA Formula E World Championship from the Tempelhof paddock. Following the sunny weather yesterday, cold and rainy conditions welcomed the 22-driver field on the second day of running at the temporary Tempelhof venue in Berlin. As a result of the wet conditions, the pecking order from Day 1 has been completely changed for today with yesterday’s two fastest teams – Jaguar and Maserati – losing their competitiveness. Instead, it was the ABT Formula E team which took a shock front-row lockout with Robin Frijns taking pole from team-mate Nico Mueller. The start of the second Berlin E-Prix was not straightforward though as protesters gained access to the track by climbing up the catching fences just before the start. As the protesters sat down on the circuit, the start procedure was aborted and Race Director Scot Elkins briefly sent out marshals to the track to examine the track surface. When the race could be started, pole-sitter Frijns could hang on to his starting position to lead his team mate Nico Mueller into the first corner. Envision Virgin racer Sebastien Buemi occupied P3 with Jean-Eric Vergne, Mitch Evans and Pascal Wehrlein following the Swiss driver. Just like yesterday, drivers started to use their attack mode quite early on in the race as it proved beneficial yesterday on the temporary Tempelhof circuit where energy management is usually not easy to master. In the first phase of the race, drivers constantly changed the top positions as no one wanted to lead and lose the benefit of a tow which has proved very powerful and beneficial in terms of energy management so far this season. The two Porsche drivers Antonio Felix da Costa and Pascal Wehrlein managed to climb up the order and seemed to have the upper hand over the rivals. However, as soon as they hit the front, their competitors were able to react with Vergne taking over the lead on Lap 20. After starting from eighth on the grid, Cassidy slowly moved up the order and hit the front of the field at Turn 6 with 16 laps to go. Following his costly mistake yesterday, Dennis shadowed Cassidy for the last part of the race with one per cent more energy than the Kiwi. With only three laps left on the board, fourth-places Evans made a mistake which allowed Cassidy, Dennis and Vergne to escape into the distance. However, the Evans-led group closed in on the leading trio once again. Despite his power advantage, Dennis never looked likely to make a move, and Cassidy was able to secure his first Formula E race win of the season in Berlin. Dennis and Vergne completed the podium with yesterday’s race winner Mitch Evans following in P4. Despite their promising mid-race pace, Porsche driver Felix da Costa only managed a fifth place in front of local hero Maximilian Guenther, who showed a remarkable performance to bounce back from his low-key qualifying result. Championship leader Wehrlein appeared to be in contention for the win at the mid-point of the E-Prix, but dropped back to seventh with reigning champion Stoffel Vandoorne securing P8. Abt Cupra racer Nico Mueller was not able to convert his second starting position to a podium place, and had to settle for P9 with Neo 333 driver Dan Ticktum completing the top ten. The difficult double-header for Wehrlein left him on top of the pile but by a narrow four-point margin to Cassidy, with Vergne third. Following their troublesome Saturday round, TAG Heuer Porsche's advantage in the Teams' table also continued to evaporate on Sunday, with the Jaguar-powered Envision Racing squad now just 15 points back in second. via F1Technical.net . Evans Outpaces Vergne in Saturday Practice for Diriyah E-Prix Doubleheader
In the electrifying world of Formula E, the battle between Mitch Evans and Jean-Eric Vergne continued to spark excitement as they returned to the track for Saturday's practice session following Friday night's thrilling Diriyah E-Prix race. Evans, representing Jaguar TCS, emerged victorious in the practice round, edging out Vergne of DS Penske to claim the top spot.
Today's practice session stood as the sole opportunity for teams to fine-tune their strategies, a contrast to the two sessions held the day before. For doubleheader weekends featuring two full championship rounds, the practice time is halved for the second race, intensifying the challenge for teams and drivers alike.
Evans showcased his prowess with a blistering pace, clocking in at 1m10.154s, a mere 0.208s faster than Vergne. Impressively, Evans completed two fewer laps than his competitor, underscoring his efficiency on the track. Maximillian Guenther of Maserati MSG secured the third spot, trailing 0.131s behind Evans, while Oliver Rowland of Nissan, despite not utilizing the full 350KW power allocation, clinched the fourth position. Friday's race winner, Jake Dennis of Andretti, rounded up the top five.
Stoffel Vandoorne, representing DS Penske, trailed closely behind the top five, just 0.050s adrift, with Nick Cassidy of Jaguar following closely at 0.004s slower. Nissan's Sacha Fenestraz secured the eighth spot, followed by the Envision Racing duo of Sebatien Buemi and Robin Frijns, completing the top 10.
Further down the grid, Jake Hughes represented NEOM McLaren, with Norman Nato of Andretti close behind in 12th position. Jehan Darulava of Maserati claimed 13th place, ahead of Mexico winner Pascal Wehrlein, who led the factory Porsches. Edoardo Mortara of Mahindra secured the 15th spot, followed by teammate Nyck de Vries and the ERT duo of Dan Ticktum and Sergio Sette Camara.
The field wrapped up with Lucas di Grassi of Abt Cupra, Sam Bird of McLaren, Nico Mueller of Abt Cupra, and Antonio Felix da Costa of Porsche, with just 1.32s covering the entire grid. As anticipation mounts for the upcoming races, the competitive landscape of Formula E continues to deliver electrifying performances and intense rivalries on the track.

Ok lost the end of Formula E quali (grrrr), why did Mahindra and Andretti retire???
Andretti ending up racing, it was Abt Cupra that withdrew from the race! There was a problem with their suspension that they couldn’t fix so they didn’t even run Quali, sucks for them all, especially after they’ve travelled all that way for nothing basically. Andretti just had a terrible race so might as well have retired I guess! Maserati both ended up out, Sam Bird DNS and Mitch Evans got an early drive through penalty so all in all that’s five teams that just had a terrible time!
It cracks me up because Naomi kept saying the younger drivers were going to benefit on this track and the older ones would suffer and we ended up with Da Costa, Vergne and Cassidy on the podium because the younger guys who were in the hunt (Fenestraz & Gunther) just ended up overcooking it and put themselves out!

Both Envision drivers - Sebastien Buemi and team returnee Robin Frijns - will be required to race at the WEC event for Toyota and BMW respectively, meaning that as it stands they will be out of the first Berlin FE race, on the Saturday
Formula E is likely to issue a further iteration of its calendar to confirm the venue for the only current to-be-decided race on the schedule in Italy over the weekend of April 13/14. This is expected to be either Misano or Imola, although a recent simulation study of the Vallelunga circuit near Rome was also carried out.
Additionally, Jakarta being added as a season finale in August is believed to be still possible, meaning that a 17-race billing might be achievable.
But Buemi told The Race that he “still has not lost hope [the WEC clash will disappear] because I know things will change again when they publish [a calendar update] in November".
“I was quite happy to see that we don’t have the clash with the prologue [WEC test in Qatar, which was initially set to be on the same weekend as an end-of-February FE date] and Le Mans tests [now free of the scratched Jakarta race]."
Buemi suggested reducing Berlin to a single race and making Portland a double-header would be a logical change to ensure no direct clash between Berlin and the WEC's Spa race.
-
Another driver who is likely to be in the frame for a drive at Envision is Tom Dillmann, simulator driver for its powertrain supplier Jaguar.
Ex-Dragon-Penske driver Joel Eriksson has also served as a test and reserve driver for Jaguar. The firm is expected to announce its full wider 2024 FE driver line-up before the end of this year, which will make Envision's potential fallback plans clearer.
Other drivers that could be affected may include Abt Cupra’s Nico Mueller, who may be held to racing for the Peugeot WEC team at Spa.
Abt is expected to call upon the services of Kelvin van der Linde, who subbed for an injured Robin Frijns in three events last season, to deputise.
FE is expected to take precedence for Norman Nato, Jean-Eric Vergne and Stoffel Vandoorne, while the situation regarding Mahindra's FE returnee Nyck de Vries remains unclear as he is expected to also be racing for the Toyota WEC team in 2024 but has yet to be officially announced.

What happened with daniel? I keep seeing vague mean german comments on tiktoks with him? Something about gaming?
omg the way I was racking my brain trying to figure out if something has happened lately and completely ignoring the 2020 incident. if it’s not this then I’m not quite sure what it’s abt.
I’ll just explain the situation: so basically during the start of the pandemic, formula e held this competition for all the fe drivers had to participate in sim races.
During one of the races, Daniel Abt had managed to get on podium. Suspicion was immediately raised by some of the drivers and others. Daniel would later admit that he let a 18 year old sim driver , participate in the race for him. he didn’t mean harm at all but Audi took it seriously and fired him.
He released an apology statement, vid and paid a fine. There’s a lot of speculation on why it happened but I’ll just leave with basic facts. Fe drivers at that time would speak out and support Daniel but at the end of the day daniel rejected offers from teams and wouldn’t drive again till for Nio for a few races.
Not sure if that’s what’s happening since it was so long ago and Daniel and everyone has moved on from it but that’s the only thing I can think of!
