Did The DVD Drive Help Sell PS2s?

This is a repost of a cohost post from AUG 13, 2024:

Someone made a weird claim on twitter about the PS2 and how important DVD playback was in late 2000, claiming that DVD players were under $100 by the end of 2000. It didn't smell right, but this screenshot they kept posting didn't make sense to me. Where was it coming from, who was saying this about DVD players?

I went to try and find where this screenshot comes from, and it's the Wikipedia page for "DVD player". I went and skimmed the 5 refs included in that article, and as far as I can tell, of the 1 webpage, 1 service manual, and 3 articles, none of them say this about pricing. Here's the specific version of the article I was looking at.

The closest we get is the EETimes reference in that wikipedia article, an article from May 2002 which has "With DVD player prices on track to drop to about $70 by year's end". That's not super helpful because it doesn't tell us where the prices are in May 2002.

The remaining four sources aren't very helpful either. The service manual PDF is lots of circuit boards, no prices. The webpage and and the other two articles are talking about the first year of the DVD player & format, which is about 1997. So that doesn't help us. Where'd this number even come from?

I checked the Talk page for the article, I'm seeing someone point out in 2008 that there were 0 sources on this article, and I'm not digging in the edit logs of the article itself to see when/where the references came from. So we know sometime between 2008 and 2024 these five sources were added, but none of the sources back the claim.

Trying to find articles about pricing from the time, I google "dvd player price in 2000" and get an IGN article from August 2000 that lists prices ranging from $270 to $3,000. To confirm my knowledge of the PS2 launch (because now I'm doubting what I know lol) I find a GameSpot article from May 2000 announcing the price and launch of the PS2, which is October 26, 2000 for $299 USD.

If your entry level DVD player is $300 in August 2000, I don't know how easy it was to find players "under $100" by the end of the year, and definitely not by the PS2's launch date of late October 2000. Based on looking through some articles at the time, we're looking at something that cost the same as a budget Sony DVD player at the time, but also played video games. It's hard to say how much that drove sales, but I did a quick search for "ps2 launch sales", looking for articles before 2001. I found a CNN article from the PS2's launch day that says:

Perhaps the most important perk, the PS2 can play digital versatile disc (DVD) movies, a feature that Sony hopes will make the $299 console a standard appliance in North American homes. The game pad controls the DVD functions with a relatively rudimentary interface, allowing users to skip ahead, pause or view special features.

In Japan, the presence of the movie player has reportedly driven up sales of DVD movies.

Based on quick searches from articles at the time, T\the evidence that the DVD feature helped PS2 sales is way more evidenced than the idea of $100 DVD players by the end of 2000. Hell, trying to find something that gets me close to that pricing claim is a CNET article from 2002 which says:

The cost of DVD players fell more than $200 within two years of their introduction in 1997 for nearly $500, according to Peddie Research. And the price slide hasn't stopped. Although the Consumer Electronics Association says the average price of a DVD player was $193 last year, consumers can now find players for less than $100.

Looking at it all, it seems like the DVD functionality was a selling point according to Sony and articles at the time of the launch, so. Idk, seems like the DVD feature was important to sales of the PS2!

I woulda been 6-ish when the PS2 launched, so what I know first-hand of the era is skewed. Listening to people I trust talk about games has given me the impression the DVD drive and playback was important to the PS2's sales and initial success, making for a solid foundation for people to develop a shit ton of amazing, system-seller titles for the platform. It's a hand-in-hand situation, not an either-or situation. Based on what I remember growing up, the PS2 was a good investment for a video game household that loved movies but didn't have the funds to get a DVD player and get a game console. For us, the PS2 was a best of both worlds situation.

But that's kinda... not the point? It wasn't difficult to find these sources talking about price, but it shoulda been easier. Articles talking about DVD player prices should have been in the Wikipedia article, but weren't. That's super strange to me, a wikipedia article about a large and important type of media player has only 5 sources, and more than half of them are talking about it's first year. Google search should have been a lot better to allow me to find more sources from the time, because it was hard to find any coverage of the launch day vibes of the PS2. Thinking about this more after the fact, I think I need to learn how to search magazine scans because I know gaming print magazines at the time would have said something about DVD playback and how important it may or may not have been!

Idk where to end this. Seems like there's a weird bit of misinfo on the DVD player Wikipedia page, which seems hard to correct because I'm not sure where to look for better sourcing. Someone should do something about this I think!

USD Index Begins Inching Towards Highs Once more, Société Générale Economists Say Rebound In the direction of 114.8 Peak ‘Is Not Dominated Out’

In 2022, the U.S. dollar has been very strong, despite the global economy’s downturn and the rising inflation worldwide. 12 days ago, the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) rallied to a high of 114.8 and since then, the index has pulled pack and a recent analysis from economists at Société Générale notes that the index will likely rally back toward the 114.8 high.

Greenback Index Starts Climbing Again After the Recent Pullback, Société Générale Economists See a ‘Prevalence of Upward Momentum’

The U.S. dollar, otherwise known as the greenback, has been a formidable foe against a myriad of fiat currencies this year. A large swathe of fiat currencies like the euro, pound, yen, yuan, and Australian and Canadian dollars have all suffered from the greenback’s strength. On September 27, the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) tapped a high of around 114.8, a height that hasn’t been recorded since 2001. The DXY is an index that is leveraged to measure the value of the greenback against six different fiat currencies. The basket of fiat currencies traded against the U.S. dollar consists of the European Union’s euro, the Swiss franc, the Swedish krona, the British pound, the Canadian dollar, and the Japanese yen. However, the basket of six currencies is not distributed evenly, as the euro consists of 57.6% of the basket, and the yen is the second largest component with 13.6%. The index gives traders, analysts, and economists a fair valuation of the dollar’s strength against the basket of foreign currencies. The DXY was introduced in 1973 when U.S. president Richard Nixon removed the gold standard and the Bretton Woods Agreement dissolved. At the time, the DXY initially started with a base of 100 and the index has risen a great deal since then, reaching an all-time high in February 1985. At that time in 1985, the DXY tapped 160.41 and in order to breach the record from the latest high recorded 12 days ago, the index would have to increase by more than 39%. Economists from the French-based financial services company Société Générale S.A. (Socgen), believe the DXY is heading back toward the 114.8 range after the recent dip. “A rebound towards 113.60 and the peak near 114.80 is not ruled out,” the Socgen economists detailed on October 7. The economists further state that a break under the 110 region would suggest a deeper pullback, but DXY is currently trading at around 112.747 on Sunday afternoon at 11 a.m. (EST). “Only if the support zone at 110.00/109.30 gets violated would there be a risk of a deeper pullback. In such a scenario, next objective could be at September low of 107.60,” the Socgen economists wrote in the company’s U.S. dollar and market outlook note. “Daily RSI is still within bullish territory denoting prevalence of upward momentum,” the economists added. Presently, five-day metrics indicate that the euro is down 2.39% against the U.S. dollar, while the Japanese yen is down 1.02%, and the British pound is down 3.19%. An ounce of gold is down 1.04% against the greenback this weekend, and silver is down roughly 2.47%, but still above $20 per troy ounce of .999 fine silver. The global crypto market capitalization of all the cryptocurrencies in existence has gained 0.08% during the last 24 hours and the crypto economy is currently valued at $944.60 billion. Equity markets closed in the red on Friday afternoon as Nasdaq shed 3.8%, the Dow Jones composite lost 2.05%, NYSE declined by 3.34% and S&P 500 saw a 2.8% decrease in value. Reliance Industries seeks minimum $14 for gas from CBM block

Reliance Industries Ltd is seeking a minimum of USD 14 for selling natural gas being produced from coal seams in a block in Madhya Pradesh as it looks to cash in on the recent spike in energy prices globally.

Reliance sought bids from users for the sale of 0.65 million standard cubic meters per day of gas from its coal-bed methane (CBM) block SP-(West)-CBM-2001/1 for a one-year period beginning April 1, 2022, according to a Notice Inviting Offer (NIO) published by the firm.

Bids have been sought at a premium over the base of 14 per cent of the Brent crude oil price.

"A Bidder shall be required to quote the variable denoted as 'V' in USD per million British thermal unit terms as a positive number pursuant to the gas price formula" of "14% x Dated Brent + V," the NIO said.

The starting ticker for 'V' has been kept at USD 1 per mmBtu, which means bidders will have to quote at least USD 1 plus 14 per cent of dated Brent crude oil to buy the CBM gas.

Brent crude oil is currently trading above US 92.5 per barrel and at this price, the floor rate for Reliance gas comes to USD 13 per mmBtu. Adding 'V' of USD 1, the minimum price comes to USD 14 per mmBtu.

The sale price will be higher of the bid price or the government-approved rate for domestic gas, NIO said.

The government dictated price for gas produced by state-owned firms such as ONGC presently is USD 2.90 per mmBtu.

The rate Reliance is seeking is higher than the price at which the company had sold the same gas last year.

Gas will be delivered at Shahdol in Madhya Pradesh, which is connected to the nationwide gas pipeline network through the HVJ pipeline, the NIO said.

Last year, Reliance had sold three-fourths of the gas from the same CBM block to an affiliate of the company. India Gas Solutions Private Limited, a 50: 50 joint venture of Reliance and UK's bp, bought 0.62 mmscmd out of 0.82 mmscmd gas bid out in that auction.

State-owned gas utility GAIL India Ltd cornered 0.17 mmscmd while 0.03 mmscmd was picked by Reliance Gas Pipeline - the entity that transports gas from the CBM blocks in Madhya Pradesh to consumers.

The price bid was 9.2 per cent of the prevailing rate of Brent crude oil price, which translated into a rate of USD 8.5 per mmBtu at current oil prices.

Some interesting and unexpected lost Pokemon merchandise news: These never released prototype plushes popped up and sold on eBay last week. In 1999, the plush company Applause got the rights to make some very cute mini Pokemon plushes that came in small plastic Pokeballs. While there were quite a few Pokemon in the set, all of the Pokemon plushes above never made it into the set. Bellow are all of the officially released plushes from this set.

According to the eBay seller named lorelled: “I worked in Marketing and Product Development at Applause Inc. from 1998 to 2001. These items were discarded by the company after they were rejected for production by the licencor. Only 3 prototypes of each proposed item were ever made, which is why they are extremely rare.”

If you want to know how rare these are, I’ll make a list of how much each plush sold for in USD. Keep in mind, all of these had intense bidding wars and multiple people were willing to pay this much for one of these plushes.

This is Volume 11 in the series Toho SFX Movies Authentic Visual Book.

From the Introduction: “Toho SFX Movies Authentic Visual Book is a series focused exclusively on one character (mainly one monster) from one work, which is edited into one volume every time.  Large pictures of the character make it possible for readers to enjoy the texture, subtlety of the design and design details of the character.  In the meantime, as there have been a lot of books written on the description of each work, such description in this book is limited to a minimum amount.

“The Godzilla of this book is the Kaijyu (their spelling) which appeared in ‘Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah Giant Monsters All-out Attack’ (2001).  We hope you enjoy Godzilla’s design with these snapshots and still pictures taken when they shot the film.”

These books are sold through the Godzilla store (http://godzilla.store) for about $12 USD, although I haven’t tried to see if they ship to the USA.  There are outlets in the States that sell these books, and I got the several volumes I own at conventions (remember those?) for about $20-$25.00 a piece.

Each book is 32 pages long, 8 1/2″ by 11 1/2″, and filled with numerous photos from Toho’s own vault, most of which have never published before.  The latest volume is #68 (!) which focuses on Godzilla 1973 aka the version from Godzilla vs Megalon.

The volume pictured above is the first I purchased because it focuses on GMK’s Godzilla, which is my favorite Godzilla design.  About half of the photos in the book depict the film’s battle between Godzilla and Baragon.  I’d’ve scanned more pictures from the book for illustration, but there are very specific copyright warnings in the book, and we all know how litigious Toho can be.

Highly recommend getting these books if you can.  The detail and BTS shots are so good that it’s the next best thing to actually being on set.

Azusa 999 by Ichirō Sogabe, October 1997

Azusa 999 is an RPG Maker adventure game (à la Corpse Party or To the Moon) developed in 1997 for the classic Japanese PC-98 personal computer. It's a heavy emotional story about suicide and an otherworldly train… among other things. It's quite unlike anything else – a flawed diamond, forgotten by time – which is why I decided to translate it to English over two decades after its original release!

The venerable RPG Maker Dante98: the very first official version of RPG Maker, for the good old PC-98. Between 1995 and 2001, Enterbrain, the company behind the software, famously held a huge annual RPG Maker game-making contest with their parent company – the Ascii Entertainment Software Contest – in which winners could receive up to 10,000,000 yen (~10,500,000 yen; ~100,000 USD in today's money). The most notable winner, in retrospect, was the horror adventure cult-classic-cum-genre-progenitor Corpse Party. You might've heard of it!

What's not as famous, though, is that this grand contest wasn't the only one of its kind. Between 1997 and 2002, Enterbrain also held a monthly contest for smaller games with smaller prizes to match, via a site called the "Internet Contest Park"; colloquially known as "Conpark". A contest for small, experimental games, with a focus on ingenuity, creativity, and heart… It was special.

I first found out about Conpark via the website of Sasuke Kannazuki, the creator of the cult classic RPG Maker title Moon Whistle. Back in the day, being an RPG Maker enthusiast, he occasionally reviewed games seen on Conpark – and two decades later, I stumbled upon those reviews. Finding out about this cultural treasure trove – oodles upon oodles of forgotten Japanese-only video games, made in the visions of singular enthusiasts, all buried beneath the sands of time – I found myself hungrily digging through the archives; living this cultural past that I never knew existed. When the dust settled, my interest had solidified most for one game. A game with strikingly stylized aesthetics. A game with an emotional premise. A game that I somehow felt compelled to translate, so that it may be experienced by people in another place; in another time.

That game was Azusa 999. Submitted for the October 1997 edition of Conpark, it netted its creator Ichirō Sogabe 68,000 yen (~71,000 yen; ~654 USD in today's money) at the ripe old age of 19. Though it was seemingly developed in only two months (his previous winning entry, CLOCK, was in August of the same year), this story about death and an otherworldly train was immensely well-received, and is beloved by the precious few who know it.

When asked for a short comment upon winning the prize, Sogabe wrote:

Originally, the game's title was "Asuka 999"… It wasn't until after I'd sent it in that I noticed that the pop song was called "Azusa #2" and not "Asuka #2"! So in the end, I changed it. In any case, I'm very thankful.

The title is, as explicated above, a reference to the 1977 pre-J-pop humdinger Azusa 2-Gō ("On Azusa #2, at 8 AM on the dot, I depart from you"). The "999", one can imagine, is straight from Galaxy Express 999, a peerlessly influential manga and anime that similarly is about a mystical train. The Azusa #2 – the train on which you tearfully depart from that which pains your heart – and the Galaxy Express 999 – the train not of this world. Combine the two, and you get Azusa 999… both in name and in concept.

When I decided to translate Azusa 999, I had not yet played through the story in its entirety, and I had no experience with PC-98 hacking. I did, frankly, not know what I was getting into. This project that I thought would be "free of hacking" ended up luring me into 22 total hours of assembly hacking, and half that to program tools – not to mention that the story was longer and made me far more uncomfortable than I had expected. If I'd known these things in advance, I would probably not have decided to translate it. But… I'm glad I did, for here is a fascinating, storied, unique work that deserves to be shared – and it was translated and released precisely because I let passion get the better of me. And therein lie the fan translator's greatest assets: boundless enthusiasm, and a lack of common sense.
