Abortion Drug Testing Is the Latest Weapon in the War Against Reproductive Freedom | The Mary Sue
In Poland, scientists have reportedly created tests that can detect whether people have taken a form of abortion pills. These tests are focused on two specific drugs, mifepristone, and misoprostol, which are both typically used in medicated abortions. The Polish government funded this research as part of its efforts to end legal abortion. According to the New York Times, Polish authorities are already starting to use these kinds of tests to investigate women’s pregnancies and miscarriages.

S.P. Rogers at RePro-Truth:
Back in 2013, “more than 300 provisions were introduced across the country to prevent access to abortion” under the guise of protecting women's health and safety.2 In August of that year, J. Pepper Bryars, the former press secretary and speechwriter for Alabama Gov. Bob Riley, authored an op-ed in which he proudly admitted that “abortion opponents' true goal [was] not to make abortion clinics safer [for women], but to close all abortion clinics.”3 "Our goal should remain… to make all abortion illegal and inaccessible… And our strategy and arguments should always support that long-term goal,” he added.4 Woman-protective anti-abortion arguments (WPAA) emerged as a strategy in the 1990s, “fueled by anti-abortion market research. According to John Willke, head of the National Right to Life Committee and pioneer of the 1970s' fetal-focused arguments, he embraced WPAA early in the 1990s when research showed that the movement's fetal-focused arguments were falling on deaf ears.”5 The prevailing public sentiment, Wilke discovered, was that “pro-life people were not compassionate to women and that we were only ‘fetus lovers’ who abandoned the mother after the birth. They felt that we were violent, that we burned down clinics and shot abortionists. We had to convince the public that we were compassionate to women.”6 In response to this research, Wilke created the now familiar slogan “Love Them Both,” and the anti-abortion movement began to argue that abortion harms women.7 “For audiences concerned about protecting women’s rights, woman-focused antiabortion argument was potentially conflict resolving: it could reassure those who hesitated to prohibit abortion because of concerns about women’s welfare that legal restrictions on abortion might instead be in women’s interest.”8 But WPAA fused “talk about women’s health and women’s rights with some very old forms of talk about women’s roles: Abortion must harm women because women are by nature mothers. Choosing against motherhood and subverting the physiology of pregnancy will make women ill—and in all events cannot represent what women really want, because any real woman wants what is best for her child. Women who seek abortions must have been confused, misled, or coerced into the decision to abort a pregnancy—because the choice to abort a pregnancy cannot reflect a normal woman’s true desires or interests. Using law to restrict abortion protects women from such pressures and confusions—and frees women to be true women.”9
WPAA is aimed at protecting fetuses by restricting women’s choices, which is said to be “good” for women. Advocating for restricting women’s rights because doing so is “good for women is advocating on the basis of a sex-role-based belief that, as Dorinda Bordlee [and other anti-abortion activists] emphasized,... ‘What’s good for the child is good for the mother. So now we’re advocating legislation that is good for the woman.’ On this sex-role-based view, there is no conflict of interests between women and the unborn life they bear because, as Bordlee explained, what is good for the child is good for the mother. A state can restrict abortion to protect the unborn and it is good for women’s health because what is good for children is good for women’s health. The descriptive claim is also a normative claim about sex roles that are ‘good’ for women.”10
[...]
Despite the contemporary anti-abortion movement's emphasis on “science,” WPAA remains grounded in gender-paternalism. “Women’s decisions about abortion are shaped by circumstances that women face before conception and can foresee after birth.”13 “In fact, global studies show that highly restrictive abortion laws make abortion unsafe for women but do little to lower abortion rates.”14 “WPAA offers abortion-restrictions as a one-size-fits-all cure for the many social circumstances that lead women to end a pregnancy. The claim is that by restricting all women, government can free women to be the mothers they naturally are. Woman-protective antiabortion argument is gender-paternalist in just the sense that the old sex-based protective labor legislation was. It restricts women’s choices to free them to perform their natural role as mothers.”15
Since the Dobbs decision, groups that oppose reproductive rights and autonomy are laser focused on prohibiting access to safe and effective medications that induce abortion, particularly targeting mifepristone and misoprostol. Proponents have consistently framed their efforts to cut off access to these medications as a benign effort to “safeguard[] the health and safety of women.”16 Given the anti-abortion movement's history of cloaking its goals in woman-protective anti-abortion arguments (WPAA), it is prudential to ask, “Is the anti-abortion movement’s goal of cutting off all access to mifepristone and misoprostol truly a benign effort to protect women’s health and safety?”
[...] Unfortunately, Roe v. Wade didn't magically mean that safe abortion was acceptable to everyone who needed it. TRAP laws, or Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers laws, enacted under the guise of protecting women's health and safety created tremendous hurdles for low income and minority women. Some who were unable to access abortion turned to unsafe methods.
Anti-abortion activists push the baseless claim that bans on abortion medication are about “protecting women’s safety.” In reality, abortion bans undermine womanhood and have nothing to do with “protecting women.”

Posting this for reference bc I found out recently that you can order abortion pills online if you can't access a clinic in America and I'm also linking directories to abortion providers in Canada (alt) and the US and because it's personally relevant, if you happen to be a Canadian who's been denied an abortion by a practitioner, here is a list of provincial medical colleges so you can report them.

“Under Section 58 of the Offence Against the Person Act 1861, which carries a maximum life sentence, it is illegal for a woman to administer “poison” (abortion pills) with the intent to cause her own miscarriage after the 24-week legal limit. Last month, the fifth woman this year appeared in an English court charged under Section 58, compared with only three previous prosecutions in the past 160 years.”

I read that that one abortion pill is being mailed still. It's the reversible one right? If someone wants a reversal pill, where can she get one fast? Do you have a good resource on that sort of thing I can reblog?
Abortion pill reversal works specifically when the mother has taken mifepristone (the pill whose FDA status is in flux) and not misoprostol (usually the second pill)
If someone has taken mifepristone and decides she wants to save her baby, she can call 1-877-558-0333 or visit AbortionPillRescue.com
She will be connected with a nurse who will ask her some questions to determine if she is a candidate for the reversal, and then will be connected with a nearby doctor/healthcare provider who can give her progesterone and hopefully save her baby.
Misoprostol is the second pill that is typically taken, and it induces contractions to expel the baby. Without taking mifepristone first, the misoprostol is less likely to work as intended (that is, to kill and expel the baby). Because it works differently than mifepristone, the abortion pill reversal may not be as effective for someone who only took misoprostol. However, it would still be worth calling the hotline and asking the nurse, and the nurse may want you to see a local doctor just in case.

Urged by Cortez Masto, CVS and Walgreens begin dispensing abortion pill in Nevada - The Nevada Independent
Almost a year after major pharmacy chains began waffling at the prospect of filling mifepristone prescriptions, Walgreens and CVS began dispensing the abortion pill in Nevada during the last few weeks.
The decision comes after a concentrated push by Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), who called on the chains to follow through with Food & Drug Administration (FDA) guidance updates finalized in 2023 allowing mifepristone to be dispensed and sold at pharmacies.
Now the most common means of terminating a pregnancy, mifepristone is the first of a two-pill drug regimen that patients can take within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. The pro-abortion rights Guttmacher Institute estimates that medication is now used for more than half (54 percent) of all abortions.
Mifepristone is available in Nevada via mail or at clinics, but abortion rights advocates say the pharmacy option will make access as simple as patients visiting their regular doctor’s office (which often are not certified to stock the abortion pill), obtaining a prescription and then picking it up at their local pharmacy.

Okay, here’s my master post on birth control
Opill is an otc birth control. It is progesterone only, so it is safe for people who have migraines with aura and people with a high risk of blood clots. It is not safe for people with a history of breast cancer. You can buy it in 1/3/6 month packs. It’s on Amazon but you can purchase it in stores. If you use a subscription plan for Amazon the first month is cheaper. You can get a 3 month pack for around the price of a 1 month pack if its your first subscription.
Telyrx might or might not ship to your state. They have birth control you might already use + plan b and Ella, which works if you’re at a higher weight. Standard Plan B caps out at 155 pound, Ella works up until 195 pounds. There are several day after pills on Amazon that’s around $15-$16, but I don’t know if it works at a higher weight limit.
Doubling on Plan B is not proven to work. If you do, you should still be fine, but you will have likely feel nauseous and possibly vomit, which could make it not work. You should be good if you vomited two hours or later after taking it. It shouldn’t be too severe.
Plan B can either work up to 3 days or 5 days after your birth control fails. Make sure you read up on what you buy. The ones on Amazon are all 3 day pills.
PlanCPills.org has a list of sites where you can purchase abortion pills. They’re on sale now for obvious reasons. Some are as low as $30. For abortion pill pack for that works up until 12 weeks is not that bad.
The specific website I used is medside24.com. These websites typically require a valid ID. Get one ASAP. Medside24.com had issues with their payment system when I used them today, but it worked out, so please don’t get too stressed. They also will not reship your order if your address is wrong, so make sure your address is right.
Plan B general lasts for four years, Plan C lasts two years because misoprostol lasts two years, but mifespristone lasts 5 years, bc is whatever it is on the package. Keep them away from extreme temperatures as they are very sensitive to temperature changes. Direct sunlight can also damage birth control, Plan B, and Plan C.
The copper IUD can be used with hormonal birth control. Do not use two hormonal birth control types together. There will be side effects in a similar manner to doubling up on Plan B.
You can take Plan B while on birth control but it could cause side effects.
Testosterone is not birth control. Estrogen can make a transfem sterile, but it is not birth control.
The mini pill, also known as a progesterone only pill, has to be taken at the same time each day for maximum efficiency. You have a 3 hour window to take it or else it’ll count as skipping a day and you will be unprotected if you have sex. The Opill counts as a mini pill, so please be aware of that. There is no skip week with progesterone only birth control. You can take the pills in any order, as each pill contains the same amount of medicine.
Birth control containing estrogen and progesterone has a more lenient window. You can take two in one day if you’ve missed one day, but you will be less protected than normal. If you missed two or more, take the most recent pill that you’ve missed and continue taking it as normal. You have to throw out the missed pills. You must take these pills in order because they may contain different amounts of hormones. You can skip the placebo week on estrogen birth control and move on to the next pack.
Feel free to add anything I’ve missed.

Do it for them - Co-captain x Curly
Previous - Part 7 - Next
Warning: Abortion mention.
You were watching the ultrasound you were doing on Anya, and you ran your hand over your face upon seeing the fetus.
"When"
Anya: "...I found out just before the crash..."
"Why didn't you tell me?" You turned to look at Curly on the stretcher and then saw Anya, "Why didn't you tell me?"
Anya: "For a moment I thought that... you wouldn't do anything for me either... and then, with all the responsibility you had on your shoulders... I didn't want to give you more problems."
"Why did you think I wasn't going to help you?"
Anya: "...You were always on the captain's side..."
"Well, when he had reasonable decisions, of course I agreed! Ugh... I don't want to talk about this now, let's focus on this now... How many weeks approximately?"
Anya: "...14 weeks..."
"Great, you're still on time. I know I ordered misoprostol, it must be somewhere."
Anya: "What's that?"
"It would help you to abort"
Anya: "How did you manage to get them to add that?"
"Well, I lied saying that some of the crew had gastric ulcers due to the consumption of aspirin to treat the inflammation caused by radiation when they had to go on walks outside the ship... And I sent Curly to ask for it so they didn't ask questions."
You mentioned searching through the cabinets for that medication until you found the tablet and handed it to her.
"I warn you that it's going to be hell, it's completely your decision, and I'll be with you to help you with all this."
You said, holding the pills while she watched you, slowly taking the box.
Anya: "How do you know?"
You fell silent and your eyes quickly moved to give Curly a glance, and then back to Anya, who understood immediately.
"Those are the side effects mentioned in the content if you take them when you are pregnant."
You told him right away and then sat down sighing.
Anya: "You look tired... Shall we grab a drink?"
You knew very well why he was saying that now, but you nodded to leave that place, not without first greeting your husband, letting him know you would be back soon.
Anya: "How was that?"
"I had gotten pregnant a few years ago, and we were about to make a new delivery, before that I asked Curly for a new load of medications, I was going to finish it myself on the ship."
Anya: "Why didn't you stay? Why didn't you do it in a safe way?"
"They keep an eye on everything you do, and they judge you. I wouldn't have gotten this job back, they would have done thousands of physical and mental tests to tell me I wasn't qualified to be co-captain... And I didn't want Curly to find out either."
You shrugged and took a seat while you prepared what was like hot chocolate, placing the powder in some cups and pouring water over them.
Anya: "Didn't he suspect anything?"
"I knew how to hide it, at that time there were only men on the ship, I lied saying it was my period, no one cared enough to ask more questions... Although Curly was very worried, he couldn't neglect his work that much either."
Anya: "...How was it? I want to know exactly what I'm going to face."
"...Hemorrhages, pelvic pain, depression, infections.... infertility"
You looked at the cup in your hands while saying this last part, taking a sip of its contents.
Anya: "...There aren't too many painkillers left in the nursery... Not for the three of us... Not for all this time we have to wait-"
She pressed her lips together as she placed her hand on her belly and tightened her uniform.
"Oh right, I haven't told you yet, the ship is heading to a Pony Express station, there we can ask for a rescue, we'll arrive in two more months."
Anya: "Even so, there aren't enough."
"I've already endured hell, I can do it again, don't worry about my dose."
Anya: "But-"
"Think about yourself! Please! Stop thinking about others!"
You slammed the cup against the table, causing a bit of the liquid to spill.
"It's your decision... Just...Decide... For you, not for others."
Anya: "Captain..."
You lifted your head upon hearing her say that, and you could see a small smile on her lips.
Anya: "Thank you"

If you’re a woman, especially after the results of the US election, here are some things I’m doing to try and keep myself safe.
- start working out and lifting weights. Practice self defense. Men are going to feel emboldened and entitled to you. Protect yourself physically and look out for your sisters.
- plan your birth control. Here is a list of doctors who will perform tubal ligation/bilateral salpingectomies (permanent birth control) without fighting you or requiring you to be married. If you decide in the future you do want to conceive, IVF would still work. Otherwise, look into hormonal contraceptives if they work for you medically.
- Consider taking gun safety classes and owning a firearm. Many cities will have a female-specific course you can take.
- Build your community. Talk to your neighbors, coworkers, business owners. Reach out to other women. Especially vulnerable women, married women, women with abusive partners, etc.
- Become a handywoman. Learn how to fix your own home, furnishings, car, you name it. The less you have to rely on men the better. There are tons of great youtube tutorials. You can also look for local woman-run courses.
- Consider storing mifepristone and misoprostol (abortion pills) and/or plan B if you are in an abortion-ban state and able to get it. The pills last between 2-5 years. I don’t recommend performing self-abortions without medical guidance, but it may be better than the alternative. Store them in a cool, dark area.
- SHOW UP and VOTE at local elections. Abortion and women’s rights are at stake in many places. Having a local government that will protect you goes extremely far under Trump.
Please add other preventative measures y’all are taking to weather the next 4 years.

Myself, Marnie Galloway and Isabella Rotman made a zine all about one way of abortion; using misoprostol and mifepristone! Using trans-inclusive language (as a trans person who has had an abortion, this was really important to me as many abortion resources are very gendered.) abortion pill zine explains what the meds are, how they work and additional abortion resources!
While the zine is available for purchase, we and the Silver Sprocket team wanted it to be accessible without a financial barrier, so it is available on the Silver Sprocket's website for FREE!! We're so proud of this project and hope it helps someone out there.
