you know i’m not at all a full time abortion organizer and i don’t want it to be my main thing i want to mainly be an abortion nerd and a little satellite training up my comrades and jumping in as needed but so like having said that,
i can’t even begin to compare what it feels like to work on abortion in the left to anything else. just nonstop swallowed resentment over the way your peers acted and continue to act on this issue. their open and overt nonchalance. at absolute best they don’t care that much, or most of the time forget to care. at worst—you know. this org in particular had an entire exodus of practically every abortion organizer. some of that bad blood is older than me and more complicated, but some of the stuff that i saw—well. i’m not going to rehash it because like i said the point is to snuff the resentment. but the full timers who left just fuxking seethe and hate us. abd they have every right but. and so nothing can be synthesized. and i see it all the time, anybody with any background in this in the org just 😬😬😬😬 and making comments.. and you know they’re trying. the vibes are BAD. so as a part timer you know i need to focus on the hard emotional labor of pretending like these people weren’t posting “chemical abortion” or at absolute best rare discourse 2 years ago. fact of the matter is growing up on the antis line is hegemonic and it’s my job to be gentle because it’s not like i’m in the clinic day in. and you can’t really be an abortion organizer and doing any other kind of socialism—nothing is more consuming. i’m a socialism doula for abortionists. i’m a socfem doula for socdems. in between… but my soul longs to be a hating ass bitch. instead i will put everything behind me and get these people to swallow the platform, say abortion out loud, with a smile… and take hating from the workers.. yes ma’am here’s the measly six hundred dollars i collected from them please don’t roll your eyes at me i worked so hard (crying) (not built for this)

WORLD NEWS
Ukraine: Missile strike on Ukraine space plant in Dnipro kills three (BBC)
“Russian long-range cruise missiles killed three people in Ukraine's central city of Dnipro when they hit a space rocket plant and a nearby street, local officials say. About 15 people were injured and nearby residential buildings damaged. Dnipro's Yuzhmash plant also builds satellites - with one launched into space by Elon Musk's SpaceX company. Russia's defence ministry said the factory made parts for Ukrainian ballistic missiles.”
Europe: Wildfire rages in Bordeaux; fire pilot killed in Portugal (AP)
“Strong winds and hot, dry weather frustrated French firefighters’ efforts Saturday to contain a huge wildfire that raced across pine forests in the Bordeaux region for a fifth straight day, one of several wildfires scorching Europe this week. Among the worst fires have been in Portugal, where the pilot of a firefighting plane died Friday when his plane crashed while on an operation in the northeast. It was the first fire fatality in Portugal this year but the blazes have injured more than 160 people this week and forced hundreds to be evacuated.”
Haiti: UN votes to ban small arms sales (BBC)
“The UN Security Council has voted unanimously to ban some weapon sales to Haiti, rocked by deadly gang violence. The resolution calls on UN member states to prohibit the sale of small arms, light weapons and ammunition to what it calls "non-state actors". But a proposal by China for a full embargo on weapon sales was rejected. Since last week, 89 people have been killed in the Port-au-Prince capital region alone.”
US NEWS
Traffic: 2 kids among 6 dead in Montana highway pileup, 8 others hurt (AP)
“Two children are among the six people who died in a Montana pileup after a Friday evening dust storm caused blackout conditions on Interstate 90, a major route in both Montana and the Western U.S. Montana Highway Patrol Sgt. Jay Nelson said investigators so far have found no other factors that contributed to the pileup that also sent eight other injured people to hospitals.”
Abortion: Laws spark profound changes in other medical care (AP)
“Even in medical emergencies, doctors are sometimes declining immediate treatment. In the past week, an Ohio abortion clinic received calls from two women with ectopic pregnancies — when an embryo grows outside the uterus and can’t be saved — who said their doctors wouldn’t treat them. Ectopic pregnancies often become life-threatening emergencies and abortion clinics aren’t set up to treat them.”
LGBTQ Rights: US agencies temporarily barred from enforcing LGBTQ guidance (AP)
“A judge in Tennessee has temporarily barred two federal agencies from enforcing directives issued by President Joe Biden’s administration that extended protections for LGBTQ people in schools and workplaces. U.S. District Judge Charles Atchley Jr. in an order on Friday ruled for the 20 state attorneys general who sued last August claiming the Biden administration directives infringe on states’ right to enact laws that, for example, prevent students from participating in sports based on their gender identity or requiring schools and businesses to provide bathrooms and showers to accommodate transgender people.”

May 5, 2022 (Thursda
Fallout continues over the leaked draft decision of the Supreme Court in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the draft overturning Roe v. Wade.Tonight, in addition to the “non-scalable” fence erected last night, Capitol Police are placing cement barricades around the United States Supreme Court. Legal commentator Joyce White Vance tweeted: “Odd that the Supreme Court is acting like they’re under assault, when it’s actually us who are under attack by them.”
In today’s context, it seems worth noting that in 2014, the Supreme Court struck down a Massachusetts law mandating a 35-foot buffer zone around clinics providing abortion services, on the grounds that such buffer zones infringe on the First Amendment’s right to protest.
Today, Chief Justice John Roberts broke his silence about the leak, calling it "absolutely appalling" and saying that if "the person" or "people" behind the leak think it will affect the Supreme Court, they are "foolish." Interestingly, after the initial insistence—without evidence—by the right wing that the leak came from the left, there is reason to think that, in fact, the decision was leaked by a right-wing zealot afraid that Roberts, who did not want to overturn Roe v. Wade entirely, would pull at least one of the other right-wing justices away from the extremist stance of Justice Samuel Alito’s decision and weaken it.
Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo noted that on April 26, the Wall Street Journal published an op-ed by the editorial board suggesting this very scenario. The editorial board warned that Roberts seemed inclined to “find a middle way” in the Dobbs decision and that if he “pulls another justice to his side, he could write the plurality decision that controls in a 6–3 decision.” The editorial continued: “We hope he doesn’t succeed—for the good of the Court and the country…it would prolong the Court’s abortion agony…. Far better for the Court to leave the thicket of abortion regulation and return the issue to the states.” Regardless of who leaked the draft, in its wake, the political landscape in the country appears to be shifting.
The right wing seems to see this as its moment to accomplish the imposition of religious restrictions they had previously only dreamed of achieving. Talk of ending gay marriage, recriminalizing homosexuality, undermining public schools, and so on, is animating the radical right.
Media stories have noted that most democratic countries have, in fact, been expanding reproductive rights. Going the opposite direction is a sign of rising authoritarianism. The United States shares that distinction right now with Poland and Nicaragua.
In contrast, those interested in protecting the constitutional right to reproductive choice, as well as all the other civil rights now under threat, are speaking out powerfully. There is also mounting anger that five of the justices on the Supreme Court seem to have lied under oath in order to do the very thing they appeared to promise not to.
That open call for a rollback of rights we have enjoyed for 50 years seems to have been a wake-up call for those unable to see the rising authoritarianism in this country for years.
From 1995 to 2001, MSNBC host Joe Scarborough was a Republican representative from Florida. Today he said, “[W]e need to look at what’s before us and how extreme these…MAGA Washington freaks are.” He went on to list some of the extreme statements of Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) and former president Donald Trump, and then said: “This is the party that brought you Jewish space lasers. This is the party that talked about that dude from Italy who they say stole the election with a satellite. Remember those bamboo particles that Republicans claimed were in Arizona ballots? And those ninja freaks or whatever they were called that went in and they were going to show that Biden stole the election but except it ended up that they get even more votes for Joe Biden. They’ve told one lie after another lie from websites run by Chinese religious cults….  This is what America wants?”
Scarborough continued: ‘“There’s always been one funny controversy after another churned up by Republicans so they can govern by gesture and proclaim their need to be radical so they could own the libs. But lately those politics of gesture morphed into actual policies that are hurting you…and your family. That are hurting Americans in Trump states. The Texas governor attacks truckers in his own state ‘cause he thinks that’s how he owns the libs, but he ended up costing Texans 4 billion dollars.”“There’s the Florida governor’s crazed attack on Florida taxpayers, going to cost them about a billion dollars, via his war on the Magic Kingdom—again to own the libs. But he’s just ending up owning his own taxpayers in central Florida. And yesterday a harshly written Supreme Court draft…will end a 50-year constitutional right…that only 19% of Americans support being stripped away. Only 19% of Americans want to ban abortion.”
This, of course, is not a conversation the Republicans wanted to have before the midterm elections, and thus they have tried to focus on the leak rather than its substance.
Today, Politico tried to suggest that the extremism of the party was limited to the “fighters” in the Republican Party, who are challenging “the governing wing.” Author Ally Mutnick contrasted Pennsylvania Republican nominee for the House of Representatives J.R. Majewski with Representative Dan Crenshaw (R-TX). Majewski “twice painted his lawn into a massive shrine of former President Donald Trump,” “raised thousands of dollars to escort a group to Washington for the Jan[uary] 6 rally that preceded the Capitol riots,” and ran a recent TV ad that “showed him walking through a shuttered warehouse with an assault-style rifle, vowing to do ‘whatever it takes’ to restore the country to its ‘former glory.’”
The article contrasted “hardliners who often refuse to negotiate” with “dealmakers who are eager to reach across the aisle.”The attempt to split the current Republican Party into a moderate wing and a radical wing is a dramatic revision of Republican Party history. In fact, moderate Republicans, who believed that the government had a role to play in regulating business, providing a basic social safety net, and promoting infrastructure, were purged from the party in the 1990s, when power shifted to leaders who believed that the country worked best when businessmen could organize the economy without meddling from government bureaucrats. Because their position was always to cut taxes and pare back the government, they were absolutists, unwilling to compromise with Democrats.
Now those extremists have themselves split into a business wing that wants small government to leave it alone and a theocratic wing that wants a strong government to enforce Christian beliefs on the country, but neither is moderate or willing to compromise with Democrats. Crenshaw might be more reasonable than Majewski, but he opposes abortion and Roe v. Wade, opposes gun control, wants to end the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), and voted against both impeachments of former president Trump.
Next week, Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will force a vote on legislation that protects the right to abortion. This will almost certainly fail, since the filibuster will enable Republicans to block the bill unless it can get 60 votes, which is highly unlikely. But it will put senators’ stances on the protection of reproductive choice—a very popular policy—on record.
Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), who expressed dismay that now-Justice Brett Kavanaugh misled her in what seemed to be promises not to overturn Roe v. Wade, has already said she will vote against the measure because she thinks it goes too far. She and Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) have proposed their own much more limited bill, but it has no cosponsors, and Democrats say it leaves the door open for states to impose severe restrictions. Schumer says he will not hold a vote on the Collins-Murkowski bill because he will not agree to cut back on constitutional rights. “This is about a woman’s right to choose—fully,” he said. “We are not looking to compromise [on] something as vital as this.”
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) added. “I do not think that 50 percent of America should be told that they have to put their bodies at risk of life or death without their consent.… I hope every human being in this country understands that when you take away a woman’s right to make her decisions about her health and well-being, she is no longer a full citizen.”

Russia Approves Coronavirus Vaccine Before Completing Tests
MOSCOW — Russia has become the first country in the world to approve a vaccine for the coronavirus, President Vladimir V. Putin announced on Tuesday, though global health authorities say the vaccine has yet to complete critical, late-stage clinical trials to determine its safety and effectiveness.
Mr. Putin, who told a cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning that the vaccine “works effectively enough,” said that his own daughter had taken it. And in a congratulatory note to the nation, he thanked the scientists who developed the vaccine for “this first, very important step for our country, and generally for the whole world.”
The major powers are locked in a global race for a vaccine that President Trump, Mr. Putin and China’s president, Xi Jinping, are treating as a proxy war for their personal leadership and competing national systems. The United States, with an effort called Operation Warp Speed, and China have poured billions into the pursuit, and health officials worry that Russia is trying to snatch a victory by cutting corners.
By skipping large-scale clinical trials, the Russian dash for a vaccine has raised widespread concern that it is circumventing vital steps — and potentially endangering people — in order to score global propaganda points.
Russia’s vaccine sped through early monkey and human trials with apparent success. But Moscow was cautioned just last week by the World Health Organization not to stray from the usual methods of testing a vaccine for safety and efficacy.
Beyond that, the United States, Canadian and British governments have all accused Russian state hackers of trying to steal vaccine research. Russian officials have denied the accusations, and say their vaccine is based on a design developed years ago by Russian scientists to counter the Ebola virus.
A vaccine is seen as the most likely avenue for defeating the novel coronavirus and alleviating a worldwide health crisis that has killed at least 734,900 people and decimated national economies. Western regulators have said repeatedly that they do not expect a vaccine to become widely available before the end of the year at the earliest.
Around the world, more than 30 vaccines — out of a total of more than 165 under development — are now in various stages of human trials. Currently, eight vaccines have entered the final phase of mass human testing, including ones produced by Moderna in the United States, Oxford University and AstraZeneca in Britain and several Chinese companies.
Some of those Chinese companies have been accused of cutting corners themselves. One offered the vaccine to employees at the national oil company, while another has teamed up with the People’s Liberation Army to conduct human trials.
In Russia, the minister of health, Mikhail Murashko, has said the country will begin a mass vaccination campaign in the fall, and said on Tuesday that it would start with teachers and medical workers this month.
The governor of Texas says virus cases are still too numerous to warrant reopening. Emerging clusters at U.S. schools and on high school teams raise concerns about wider community spread. ‘It’s really risky.’ Russia approving a vaccine before it completed Phase 3 tests prompts alarm from experts.
In Moscow, the announcement was greeted with a mixture of national pride and nagging doubts by Russians who have been schooled by experience to treat such boasts with a healthy dose of skepticism.
Lidiya Ivleva, 70, a retired nurse out for a walk in a Moscow park Tuesday afternoon, embodied both sentiments. While calling the vaccine “a great achievement” for Russian scientists, she said she would not rush to get it herself because of the “hasty” testing.
“Those who fear the pandemic more will take it first, and good for them,” she said. If in a year or so it is clearly shown to be safe, she said, then she will reconsider.
Vaccines generally go through three stages of human testing before being approved for widespread use. The first two phases test the vaccine on relatively small groups of people to see if it causes harm and stimulates the immune system. The last phase, known as Phase 3, compares the vaccine to a placebo in tens of thousands of people.
The Russian scientific body that developed the vaccine, the Gamaleya Institute, has yet to conduct Phase 3 trials.
That final phase, however, is the only way to know with statistical certainty whether a vaccine can prevent an infection, and how effective it is. And because it tests a much larger group of people, a Phase 3 trial can also detect more subtle adverse effects of a vaccine that earlier trials could not.
Experts warn that, among other things, a faulty vaccine could actually render those inoculated more vulnerable to severe forms of Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus, a potential disaster that can be ruled out only through extensive testing on human volunteers.
Image“It works effectively enough, forms a stable immunity and I repeat, it has gone through all necessary tests,” President Vladimir V. Putin said. “It works effectively enough, forms a stable immunity and I repeat, it has gone through all necessary tests,” President Vladimir V. Putin said.Credit...Aleksey Nikolskyi/Sputnik, via Reuters The Russian vaccine uses two strains of adenovirus that typically cause mild colds in humans. Scientists genetically modified them to cause infected cells to make proteins from the spike of the new coronavirus, officials have said.
The approach is similar to the one used in a vaccine developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca that is now undergoing Phase III tests in Britain, Brazil and South Africa.
The W.H.O. is in close contact with the Russian authorities and discussing proper procedures, Tarik Jasarevic, a spokesman for the organization, told reporters in Geneva on Tuesday. But he emphasized that obtaining the organization’s seal of approval would require “rigorous review of safety and efficacy data” derived from clinical trials.
The Russian Ministry of Health did not respond to detailed written questions sent last week about human trials and research into potentially harmful side effects.
CORONAVIRUS SCHOOLS BRIEFING: How is the pandemic reshaping education? Get the latest news and tips as students go back to school. Sign Up The Gamaleya Institute developed the Russian vaccine using a human cell line first cultured in 1973 — the same line used in the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. Like a number of other cell lines used in medical research and vaccine manufacturing, it began with cells taken from an aborted fetus, raising objections from abortion opponents that may come into sharper focus if the vaccine is used widely.
Russia’s announcement of a potential vaccine well ahead of the Western timeline of the end of the year could provide a welcome respite for Mr. Putin from a string of bad news.
Over the past year he has seen a steady decline in his approval ratings, which had soared to more than 80 percent after the annexation of Crimea in 2014. Now, with Russian troops bogged down in Syria and Libya, foreign adventures have lost their appeal for most Russians.
Mr. Putin has also stumbled in domestic affairs. He was uncharacteristically passive in the spring as Russia erupted into one of the world’s hot spots for the coronavirus pandemic. And he has had no answers for the economic malaise enveloping the country, as the pandemic has flattened prices for oil and other natural resources that are the main engine of the Russian economy.
Russia has already used the vaccine race as a propaganda tool, even in the absence of published scientific evidence to support its claims as the front-runner. The vaccine, for example, was branded Sputnik V, recalling the Soviet Union’s launch of a first satellite, beating the United States.
For the last several months, state television has promoted the idea that Russia is leading the competition. In May, it reported that the first person in the world to be vaccinated against the virus was a Russian researcher who had injected himself even before monkey trials had been completed.
Russia also tested the vaccine on soldiers, raising concerns about consent, though the Ministry of Defense said that all the soldiers had volunteered.
Kirill Dmitriev, the head of a government-controlled fund that invested in the vaccine, denied in a conference call with journalists on Tuesday that Russia had cut corners on testing, or that it had stolen intellectual property to get ahead.

Trump Administration to Restrict Planned Parenthood Family Planning Funds
The Trump administration is expected to announce Friday a proposed rule to cut family planning funding from abortion providers such as Planned Parenthood that promote abortion and refer women for the procedure as a method of family planning.
The new regulations would prevent abortion vendors from operating a family planning program in facilities geared toward ending life and would make abortion counseling optional – not required – while they would not allow for abortion referral.
According to the executive action, Planned Parenthood and other abortion vendors would lose the funding they have been receiving under Title X, a program that provides about $260 million annually in federal funding for birth control and other services that are categorized as “family planning” – if they continue to perform abortions and refer women for abortion as a means of family planning. Those funds are to be redirected to other facilities that provide more comprehensive healthcare services.
“The proposal would require a bright line of physical as well as financial separation between Title X programs and any program (or facility) where abortion is performed, supported, or referred for as a method of family planning,” a Trump administration official reportedly told the Weekly Standard in advance of the announcement.
The administration’s executive action is in keeping with a 1988 Reagan rule that ended past practices of allowing Title X to fund programs that existed at the same location as abortion clinics, referred women for abortions, and that lobbied for abortion rights – all as long as taxpayer monies were not directly funding abortions.
When the Reagan administration clamped down on the fuzzy line between providing taxpayer funding for birth control and promoting abortion, the rule was challenged in court. Ultimately, the Supreme Court upheld the regulation, 5-4, in Rust v. Sullivan. By the time the case was decided, however, the Clinton administration had moved into D.C. and rescinded the Reagan rule. The George W. Bush administration never launched an effort to reinstate it.
“Unlike the Reagan regulation, the proposal will not prohibit counseling for clients about abortion, but neither will it include the current, potentially illegal mandate that projects must counsel and refer for abortion,” a Trump administration told the Weekly Standard, adding:
This proposal does not necessarily defund Planned Parenthood, as long as they’re willing to disentangle taxpayer funds from abortion as a method of family planning, which is required by the Title X law. Any grantees that perform, support, or refer for abortion have a choice – disentangle themselves from abortion or fund their activities with privately raised funds.
Title X, however, is only a minor portion of Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer funding. Medicaid funding is the organization’s primary funding stream and can only be eliminated through legislation passed by Congress and signed into law by the president.
Planned Parenthood is calling the proposed regulation a “domestic gag rule” because, they claim, it ‘gags’ doctors by banning them from receiving Title X health care funding if they even talk about abortion or abortion-related services”:
The Trump-Pence administration wants to implement a dangerous gag rule that threatens your access to reproductive health care — and these lawmakers are not having ANY of it:https://t.co/0vWafVZG1U #NoGagRule pic.twitter.com/d1o5nJIPtn
— Planned Parenthood Action (@PPact) May 17, 2018
Abortion is so central to what Planned Parenthood does that the organization states, “This blocks patients from their doctors and makes it impossible for Planned Parenthood health centers to serve patients.”
Trump made four promises to the pro-life base of his party while campaigning in 2016, including that he would defund Planned Parenthood if the organization continued to perform abortions. In response, the abortion lobby has only doubled down further in its narrative that abortion is “health care.”
National pro-life organizations have praised Trump for being true to his promises. On Tuesday, the president will keynote the annual Susan B. Anthony List Campaign for Life gala. At the annual March for Life event in January, Trump also became the first sitting President of the United States to address the March live via satellite from the White House.
“It’s a shame that the federal Title X family planning program has been co-mingled with abortion ever since President Bill Clinton issued regulations not only removing the wall of separation President Reagan issued, but even requiring groups to refer for abortion,” said Tony Perkins, president of Family Research Council. “The result is that Planned Parenthood — an organization that’s been under criminal investigation for selling baby body parts — gets roughly $60 million per year through what has become a slush fund for the abortion giant.”
“Planned Parenthood and other abortion centers will now have to choose between dropping their abortion services from any location that gets Title X dollars and moving those abortion operations offsite,” he added.
Republicans in Congress have been vehemently criticized by their constituents for failing to eliminate Planned Parenthood’s Medicaid funding, though they vowed they would do so once they had control of both chambers of Congress and the White House.
In the Senate, where the GOP holds a very slim majority, two liberal Republican senators – Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska – have consistently voted in favor of abortion rights and against defunding Planned Parenthood.
Measures to defund Planned Parenthood have been attached to larger pieces of legislation – such as Obamacare repeal bills that failed to actually repeal the healthcare boondoggle. More recently, Republicans failed to include Planned Parenthood defunding language in their tax reform reconciliation, knowing Collins and Murkowski would likely not approve the measure in the Senate. In general, many Republicans in the Senate have been much more interested in “bipartisanship” than abiding by the wishes of the conservative base of their party.
Democrats, on the other hand, have made clear on many occasions they will not agree to any legislation that defunds Planned Parenthood, and Democrat Doug Jones’s win of a Senate seat in Alabama means most U.S. senators are now pro-abortion, as the Weekly Standard observed.
In response to the Trump administration’s announcement, Students for Life of America President Kristan Hawkins said the new policy would prevent abortion vendors from operating a family planning program in facilities geared toward ending life.
“These changes are long overdue as abortion is not health care or birth control and many women want natural health care choices rather than hormone-induced changes,” said Hawkins in a statement sent to Breitbart News. “You can really see how insidiously entangled the abortion industry is in our government-run healthcare programs when abortion allies in Congress get apoplectic because family planning programs don’t include a sales pitch to end the lives of family members.”
Planned Parenthood’s 2016-2017 annual report shows the group continues to perform more than 320,000 abortions per year while offering no mammograms and minimal prenatal services to pregnant women.
The abortion provider boosted its profits by $21 million – 27 percent – from last year as the group also took in nearly $544 million in taxpayer funding.
In December, the U.S. Department of Justice launched a formal investigation into Planned Parenthood for its alleged sale of the body parts of babies aborted in its clinics for a profit.
“Does anyone believe that the 266 Planned Parenthood clinics that sell abortions as well as birth control don’t try to increase their profits by also pushing for the end of preborn life when women pass through their doors?” asked Hawkins. “The Trump Administration has every right to require that Title X programs focus on health care, not abortion, and to keep such programs aimed at helping women make a plan for a family outside of the facilities designed to making sure women don’t have a family at all.”

Students Sue D.C. For Disallowing “Black Preborn Lives Matter” Drawing
Washington, D.C. officials have proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt this year, that they are perfectly fine with activists defacing the sidewalks with their political messages. Indeed, not only is the city fine with this graffiti, they’ve actively paid for it! Not only after George Floyd died in Minneapolis, Mayor Muriel Bowser actually commissioned artists to paint a two-block area of street with the giant words, BLACK LIVES MATTER. And when activists wanted to add to the mural with a second painting that read, DEFUND THE POLICE, Bowser was just fine with it.
But apparently, the city’s tolerance for political messages on the roads and sidewalks only extends to messages the Democratic leadership agrees with. Because when pro-life students began writing “Black preborn lives matter” in chalk on the sidewalk outside a Planned Parenthood clinic, they were quickly arrested and prevented from putting their message out there.
Now Students for Life of America is suing D.C., claiming that the only difference between what they were trying to do and what BLM protesters have done lies in the content of the message – an obvious violation of their First Amendment rights.
From The College Fix:
When pro-life activists showed up early morning Aug. 1, “myriad police cars and law-enforcement officers” told them they’d be arrested if they even scribbled with “washable sidewalk chalk” on the public sidewalk in front of the abortion clinic.
SFLA and foundation staff “were prohibited from communicating their message, even though other messages are now permanently emblazoned along the streets of the District in a nearly identical format,” the suit says: “The only difference between the Plaintiffs’ desired mural and the other permitted—and permanent—murals is the content of the message.”
The suit challenges the explanation given by city agencies that the plaintiffs needed permits for their planned pro-life, pro-black mural. The activists who painted DEFUND THE POLICE – which is “visible from Google satellite view” – didn’t seek permits from the Metropolitan Police Department or Department of Transportation. (The suit includes several images of the murals from various angles.)
Call us crazy, but this lawsuit sounds like a slam-dunk. Bowser and other city Democrats lost the right to prevent activists from painting political messages on the public roads and sidewalks the very moment they authorized the earlier murals. For them to sit back and say, “Oh, well, this is okay, but this isn’t” is a blatant violation of the First Amendment, and we can’t conceive of the judge or jury who wouldn’t see it that way.
Unless, of course, “wokeness” has already infected the judiciary, in which case we’re screwed anyway.

To pass the time.
Let’s start with you: How are you?: I am feeling very under the weather. Yesterday afternoon I started to notice some post-nasal drip and by bedtime I had to chug nyquil to get to sleep because swallowing hurt me. Woke up to a tender throat, stuffy and runny nose, and a sinus headache... so things could be better, but they could also be worse.
What motivates you to get up every day?: Sunlight. If there is no sun, there is no motivation and it’s the biggest struggle to roll myself out of bed.
Do you have a true best friend?: I don’t have a “best friend” because I have a handful of best friends... whom I trust wholeheartedly. I think limiting my love to just one “best friend” would be a waste of my affections.
Do you see yourself as a sensitive person?: Yes, absolutely.
Have you been upset recently?: Nope. I’ve been really good lately.
Do you still leave/receive voicemails?: Yes... I want to make sure that people know that I have called and that its not a huge emergency but I want to touch base. I don’t call others often though...
Do you live in your hometown?: No.
Are you a festive person? Do you enjoy holidays?: I’m not super festive, I both love and loathe holidays. I’ve got complicated relationships with all of my immediate family, with the exception of my dad.
Did you/Will you attend college?: I attended Queens College and am enrolled in the University of New England presently for my masters.
How many alarm clocks do you use?: My phone.
Do you consider yourself to be an open-minded person?: Absolutely.
Do you eat fruit?: All the time.
What is your favorite subject to learn about?: Psychology, psychopathology, trauma.
How many meals a day do you typically eat?: It depends... I often forget breakfast.
Music, eh?
Have you seen any live shows?: Yes.
Name three of your favorite bands/artists…: Lizzo, Demi Lovato, The Avett Brothers.
How big of a role does music play in your life?: I am always listening to music.
Can you play any instruments?: Nope.
You’re feeling down - do you listen to sad music or happy? Both, either.
If you’ve ever been to a concert, how old were you and who did you see?: I’ve seen NoName, All Time Low (more than once), We The Kings, Hey Monday, Underoath, LIGHTS, Lake Street Dive, Xavier Rudd, Trevor Hall, Highly Suspect, Ashlee Simpson, and a handful of others.  Do you prefer music to be meaningful and deep, or purely for dancing/fun?: Either. Depends on my mood.  Is there a song or artist that you secretly enjoy, but don’t want to enjoy?: Taylor Swift. The bish makes catchy music.
If you could only listen to music from one decade, which would you choose?: 90′s. Has your parents taste in music in any way affected what you like?: Definitely. My dad has always been a downloader of music and movies, he would have a very eclectic selection and I had full access.  You’re looking for some new music - what’s your preferred way to discover?: Through the “other artists you may like” section of apple music or listening to different playlists.  Do you still own any CD’s/records/tapes?: Not on purpose.  Do you ever hear a new song on tv that you like and find it?: Yes.  Speaking of television… (look at that smooth transition!) Do you watch a lot of television? Whether that be shows, news, movies etc.: I watch a lot of netflix and hulu.  Do you watch the news?: No.  What about the weather channel?: No.  What’s your favorite holiday movie?: I’m not sure. Elf maybe.  What hooks you to a television show? Light and funny or really dark and intense.  How do you feel about adult cartoons?: They’re alright. Not my preferred genre.  Talk shows - boring or entertaining?: Can be entertaining when I’m bored out of my mind... but overall boring.  Do you prefer cable, satellite or streaming?: Streaming.  Have you come across any new shows you like this year?: The Act. Super fucked up, super intense, and super thought-provoking.  Do you still watch shows that you grew up watching?: No.  What about movies that you grew up with?: No.  Are you subscribed to any streaming services?: Hulu.  Reality shows - entertaining or horrifying?: Entertainingly horrifying. Vanderpump Rules is a must watch.  What is the first movie you ever saw in a cinema?: I don’t recall.  Let’s talk about what you don’t discuss at Sunday brunch Do you identify with any organized religion?: I would say I lean heavily toward Buddhism.  If so - is it how you were raised, or have you found your own?: I was raised without an ounce of religion discussed. I had friends who went to church but if they asked me what religion my family was I wouldn’t have known the answer. My mom grew up Jehovah's Witness and subsequently did not want to push religion on to her children in any way. My dad is super atheist and never directly discussed religion with me.  Do you think that marijuana should be legalized?: Absolutely. It’s less destructive than alcohol. It can be used for SO MANY things. Marijuana is good.  If so, would that be for medical use only, or recreational?: Both. Medical cards are expensive af and they have to be renewed every year. Pay 200+ every year for medical access (plus the cost of the weed) or just buy recreational without that 200+ yearly fee...  Pro-life or pro-choice?: Incredibly pro-choice. I do not know if I would get an abortion myself, I’ve never been in that spot, but I do know its not a single bit of my goddamn business if someone has an abortion. I am truly a supporter though, my sister had had two abortions and if she hadn’t those children would have been all sorts of fucked up because she was on all sort of drugs.  Have you ever protested or been on strike?: I have done Women’s marches and I also stood outside a planned parenthood to escort women into the clinic and shield them from the insane and really mean pro-life protesters.  Is gun control necessary or no?: That shouldn’t even be a question... do people get shot needlessly or no? Are you happy with the political state where you reside?: I am perfectly happy with Massachusetts and their political state (well, everything can improve in one way or another...). I am not, however, proud of the political state of my country. Our president is a huge baby and the people, in general, are so extremely divided and on really chaotic ends of the political spectrum right now.  Have you read the book 13 Reasons Why or watched the show?: Yes and yes.  Should shows like this be available to everyone or could it be a trigger?: I think that this isn’t an easy answer. I believe that the making it available for public consumption did a really good thing for society- shed light on suicide and all of the contributing factors as well as emphasizing how confusing and messy the lives of young people can get, regardless if we see it or not. However, it was also something that was triggering for some people and it did borderline romanticize suicide without really hitting home that if you kill yourself you don’t get to see how much others care and you don’t get to see how hard others will fight for you.  Okay, let’s simmer down. Back to happy things. Do you like animals?: Yes.  If so, do you have any pets?: Dog and cat.  What is your favorite day of the week and why?: I don’t have one really because I have a revolving schedule and classwork due regularly.  Do you have a favorite season?: Fall.  How do you enjoy nice scents? Uhh... breathing?  Do you live in a large city or small town?: Medium town.  Are you happy with that or would you like to change it?: I think it’s fine.  Do you have any children?: No human children.  Are there any colors that you think compliment you?: Orange, yellow, blue.  Do you enjoy cleaning or find it to be a chore?: I enjoy it for the most part.  What is your absolute favorite food?: Sushi.
If you were any color, what would you be?: Lavender.  Do you spend a lot of time on social networks?: No, I have cut down immensely. I deleted FB and I limit myself to 2 hours per day.

The Transhumanist movement is made up of people of various political leanings. There are those who skew left-of-center, those with a more libertarian mindset, and there are even some who are archly conservative. But they all share a belief that science and technology can be wielded to cheat death. And they’re all completely tone deaf.
I first came to Transhumanism in my work as a journalist. In my career, which has spanned a decade of reporting and editorial writing on the intersection of human rights, policy, and science, nothing has raised my hackles as much as this movement’s quest for immortality and the ignorance of the inherent inequality of the discussion around that idea.
It was actually this ignorance, or perhaps willful callousness, that made me pivot my career to focus on bioethics, in which my main areas of research are biohacking, DIY science, and fringe technologies. I overlap with Transhumanist interests more often than not in my career. And it’s not all negative. In fact, I very much agree with the other maxims of the movement, including self-experimentation and morphological freedom, and I enjoy investigating the ethical challenges associated with using scientific knowledge to enhance the limits of the human body.
My disagreement with transhumanists isn’t that they want to be immortal. That goal has been a popular pastime of the wealthy, fearful, and bored for at least a millennia. It’s not the quest for immortality that seems unreasonable to me.
It’s the timing.
We live in an age where civil liberties are constantly under threat. People are in fear of being assaulted, detained, or even killed by state-sponsored actors from municipal police forces to ICE. It seems that our freedoms are eroded daily in favor of catering to the fleeting temper tantrums of one man. Trying to unleash radical life-extension strategies in this political climate is at best vain and misguided, and at worst offensive to anyone who doesn’t possess freedom over their bodies, or doesn’t possess the privilege to even think about living forever.
Some of us are just trying to make sure we’re alive at the end of the week.
Memento mori? Nah, bro.
There are several so-called “life-extension” technologies, some of them absolute bunk, others questionable-but-possible, and some theoretical-but-perhaps-legitimate. None of them are currently able to keep us alive for longer than a normal human lifespan, which currently hovers around 80 years old in most developed countries.
There is simply no logical reason to invest money in being frozen.
It’s true, we have already used modern medicine to extend our lives significantly over the past couple decades, and by some estimates, the first person to live to 150 has already been born. But radical longevity enthusiasts aren’t just hoping for an extra century or two. The moonshot is true immortality, and the investments by Randian billionaires into tremendously questionable efforts by private companies seeking secret ways to avoid dying are staggering — perhaps even reaching into the trillions of dollars.
Cryonics, or the idea that a dead body can be frozen at extremely low temperatures and resurrected at some point in the future when technology has evolved to bring frozen people back from the dead, is a big-ticket theory with Transhumanists. There are global conferences dedicated to the study of cryonics, a technology that is said to preserve tissue so well that this tissue is essentially still alive. Or so the story goes.
Max More, one of the original founders of the modern transhumanist movement, and the author of a 1990s Transhumanist manifesto, owns and operates Alcor, one of the country’s largest cryonics facilities. There, those hoping to simply press pause on their deaths and join humanity as a reanimated corpse can buy a tank for themselves, their loved ones, or their pets, for a pretty price. Alcor charges a minimum of $200,000 for whole-body preservation. (The running price of preserving a loved one at the Cryonics Institute, another major operation, starts at $35,000.)
Unfortunately, cryonics is bullshit.
Scientists agree that the freezing process damages cells irreparably, by creating what are essentially cellular icicles. Not to mention that reheating a human body — cells, membranes, and so on — also mangles the many proteins and pieces that comprise us. One BBC investigation into cryo-preservation pointed out that organs often need different temperatures and environments to maintain functionality, something we know from preserving them for donation.
There is simply no logical reason to invest money into being frozen. It doesn’t work now, it likely won’t ever work, and by the time it ever does work, no one who was frozen now will be able to be successfully resurrected.
Tumblr media
A similarly dubious technological attempt at dodging death is brain uploading. This concept is basically just the plot of Transcendence. A major proponent of brain uploading is Transhumanist luminary Martine Rothblatt, the founder of SiriusXM satellite radio and the highest-paid female CEO in the country. When the time comes, Rothblatt would like to upload her wife, Bina, to the cloud — a project that is already underway with Bina48, a social robot that has Bina’s personality — and her own Twitter account.
The concept behind brain uploading is that someday, everyone will be able to upload their entire consciousness and personality to a server and preserve themselves digitally, only to be transferred at some point into some other vessel, if they so desire. (Popular options are humanoid robots or similar household objects.)
This is a fun pastime for people who can afford it, no doubt. Talking to robots is awesome. (My kid’s first word will likely be “Alexa.”) And AI and robotics technologies are progressing at an incredible pace. However, true mind uploading is incredibly far off, because there is no evidence that personality traits reside within brain tissue, and there is no proven way to harness memories or creativity, or any of the other things that make you “you.”
Still, one provocative start-up is currently enrolling patients who want to try out this tech. (You just have to die first).
The most realistic-seeming life extension technique lie somewhere in the realm of regenerative medicine, a fringe of largely theoretical ideas based in real science that is progressing rapidly. Aubrey de Grey, the famed Cambridge gerontologist, who is also a figure in the Transhumanist movement, leads this charge. He is followed by a number of stem cell experts, geneticists, and otherwise legitimate characters who have taken up the mantle of the study of genetics and telomeres.
Telomeres are the timekeepers of human genes. They are small capsule-like pieces that make up the bottom of chromosomes and are often described as the little plastic nubs at the end of a shoelace. Their length appears to be indicative of lifespan because they seem to shrink as humans age. The longer the telomere, the longer you’ve got on the terrestrial plane, or so the theory goes.
This is real science, and there are plenty of legitimate aging studies underway that involve measuring telomeres and to see how they correspond to aging and disease. Unfortunately, there is a lot of bad science surrounding the theory as well.
Liz Parrish, the CEO of a company called BioViva, claims to be the first person to have elongated her telomeres through gene therapy that she perhaps performed on herself, possibly in Colombia. The details are foggy, but what’s clear is that BioViva’s science is happening without any regulatory oversight, peer review, or pre-clinical trials.
After she allegedly used gene therapy to reverse her body’s aging process, Parrish plastered the internet with blog posts claiming she was “Patient Zero”for this unproven and untested idea. Genome editing pioneer George Church, who despite being listed as a scientific advisor for Parrish’s company, referred to her gene therapy project as “a one-person show” in an article in MIT Technology Review.
I understand natural curiosity, the thrill of science, and the quest for innovation. But Transhumanist leaders have made science into a circus.
It is irresponsible, if not actively harmful, to pursue radical life extension as a serious goal, while so many Americans fear that they won’t be able to make through the next few years.
Zoltan Istvan, formerly the head of the Transhumanist Party and self-described “science candidate,” traversed the country campaigning during the 2016 presidential election in a vintage RV decorated like a coffin. Because becoming immortal and alleviating existential risk was his actual campaign platform. Most recently, Istvan also ran for governor of California, and once again suggested that governments should divert more resources into scientific and technological research to “cure death.”
Istvan, like so many other life extension advocates and Transhumanists, is a supporter of the concept of “morphological freedom,” or the idea that anyone has the right to do what they will with their own body. I also believe in morphological freedom, and I feel privileged to have it. But until every American also gets the chance to enjoy freedom over their bodies and choices, I remain exceedingly skeptical about investing outrageous sums into longevity research or prioritizing it above the needs of living people.
Until every American can say that they enjoy morphological freedom, including every woman who wants access to safe, affordable reproductive care, I don’t want to hear about Peter Thiel or Larry Page spending billions on flimsy science for life extension. Only 28 states require insurers to cover contraception, and 6 states moved to ban all abortions in 2017, while a further 28 states introduced legislation that would “ban abortions under some circumstances.”
Instead of funding life extension, let’s fund pro-choice candidates, build health clinics, and train midwives. Let’s fight for all women to have control over their own bodies.
Until every American has the freedom to live without fear of the state impeding their natural lifespans, I don’t want to hear about funding brain uploading initiatives. Nearly 1,000 people were shot by police in 2017. People of color actively fear for their lives every day in this country, from militant police forces and unwieldy federal immigration officials.
Instead of talking about the rights of the wealthy and educated to dabble in dubious science, let’s focus first on making sure that everyone, regardless of class or color, can feel safe on our streets.
Transhumanists list “curing death” as the number one item on their political platforms. To the people researching life extension, death is a “disease.” But I have never heard any of the people advocating that they have a human right to live forever also demanding universal healthcare. In fact, there is an ongoing debate within Transhumanism about whether universal healthcare is a human right at all.
In the U.S. in 2016, 3.2 million children did not have access to health insurance. In Zoltan Istvan’s home state, California, that number was 268,000.
I don’t see longevity supporters rallying for these causes. I don’t see them en masse wearing Black Lives Matter t-shirts, telling GOP senators to leave the ACA alone, carrying signs for Planned Parenthood, or building a float for Pride. But they will rally across the US to “oppose death.” And raise $28,000 for Istvan to build a mobile coffin.
Without also advocating for civil liberties for others, longevity proponents can be seen as a truly unethical example of what happens when the uber-privileged from Silicon Valley lose touch with how bad things really are. It is irresponsible, if not actively harmful, to pursue radical life extension as a serious goal, while so many Americans fear that they won’t be able to make through the next few years.
Forever isn’t even a consideration.

Discover Medications As well as Drug Courses That Begin With PROGESTINS.
It is a real however regrettable reality, typical doctors are not called for to have any type of training in nourishment. Healthy proteins are made use of in both forms of metabolic process - anabolism (structure as well as keeping cells as well as cells) as well as assimilation (breaking particles down and releasing/producing energy). Pain killers remains in a team of drugs called salicylates, which work by quiting the production of prostaglandin, materials in the body that create swelling. Don’t Think of An Elephant Book Summary
Key quotes and thoughts from Don’t Think of An Elephant! Know Your Values and Frame the Debate by George Lakoff.
Systemic issues are not easy to explain, but progressive’s ability to frame them in a way conservatives and progressives alike understand is critical if we are to achieve political change to lead to greater freedom and equality.
Strict Father Morality vs. Nurturing Parent Conservatives believe in “strict father morality” whereas progressives believe in a “nurturing parent.” Think James Dobson and the concept of “spare the rod, spoil the child” who says we should be punished for our transgressions, that people are born evil and need straightening out by a strict father. Conservative women and men tend to see male authority as protective and supportive. Thus, the “war on women” doesn’t resonate with them.
What binds us together Conservatives and progressives believe in freedom. Rather than using a phrase like the War on Women, better to focus on “Freedom, which allows women to decide for themselves, whatever their views on abortion, contraception, and sex education.”
Private depends on the public. We need highways, airports to allow business to travel to and from our businesses, to bring in tourists. We need parks to play in and libraries for education. We need an educated workforce to work in companies. “It is the freedom that public resources afford that make them central to democracy.”
How is freedom achieved? Through the following:
Health = Freedom. Without health, we cannot enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. GOP renamed “Affordable Care Act” to Obamacare to associate it with government takeovers and death panels. We should continue using Affordable Care Act and other names that appropriately label services that give us freedom.
Education = Freedom. “Education tells you about the world and the possibilities in life. If you don’t know what’s possible, you cannot even set goals.”  (p. 63). Education teaches you to think, act, be socially engaged, act rationally, get facts for yourself. It gives you access to art, the beauty in life, and the knowledge to be a productive citizen. It helps people be empathetic and understanding to each other.
Public education is publicly accountable and thus, not allowed to narrow the information made available to students (for example, teaching creationism versus science).
Wealth = Freedom. Poverty is a freedom issue. People who are poor send kids to school hungry, have less time to participate in politics, have less access to health and education. Rich people relocate easier, travel easier, eat better food, have more social connections, have access to better jobs.
“Conservatives see being poor as a personal failure, a failure of individual responsibility. But the reality is that poverty curtails freedom. There is a reason people speak of being trapped in poverty. They are.”
Equality = Freedom. All people should be free to marry whoever they love and want to be committed to for life. Also, women are human beings and have the right to control their bodies. When that is denied, they are not free. Sex education is important for women to control their bodies. Women need to control when they produce or not. Forcing a woman to undergo humiliation (forced ultrasounds) in order to exert control over her body is a freedom issue. Hounding women on the way into an abortion clinic is a freedom issue.
“You are not free when you are not treated like other human beings with respect to how you function in an institution.”
“Discrimination is a denial of freedom.”
Unions = Freedom. Workers are profit centers yet conservatives like to speak of “wealthy company owners and investors as ‘job creators,’ that they ‘give’ people jobs, as if they just create jobs as gifts for people who are out of work” (p. 68).
Say, “Workers are profit creators.” It is the truth. Versus conservative rhetoric where they say “job creators” which favors corporations.
A decline in unions is a decline in wealth.
Unions grant freedom from corporate servitude and wage slavery.
The power of many “resources” (as opposed to “asset” workers) is greater than one in ensuring employers do not, for example, steal or misappropriate pensions.  Unions create the best deal for “resource” workers.
America is a country of immigrants. It is comprised of refugees fleeing from persecution, poverty, discrimination, death. “The issue is empathy and respect for these refugees as human beings” (p. 73).
Runaway wealth began to accelerate during the 1980s when Reagan cut taxes on the wealthy.  Wealthy people and corporations have lobbying power with public officials, own media outlets, sponsor shows, buy massive advertising. They gain control of state legislature and voting rights of poor. They control information. (read, in Nevada, Adelson owns the Las Vegas Review Journal and recently published a favorable spread about Dean Heller’s productivity along with his colleagues in a Republican congress in 2017 when the forced the tax scam on millions).
Runaway wealth is out of control and the way to regain control is to change politics. In 1976 in the US, the top 1% had 19.9% of the wealth of the nation. In 2010, the top 1% had 34% of the wealth, top 5% had 63%, top 20% had 88.9% of the wealth. That leaves 80% of the population with only 11% of the world’s wealth.
As the nation’s wealth to the wealthy rises, the freedom that wealth buys to enjoy life, influence policy, declines for most Americans.
State control is cheaper than national control, which is why it’s critical we ensure control over state politics. As Republicans and the Trump Whitehouse stop federal funding for health care, education and women’s rights, they direct decisions to the states, where they depend on Republican seats to enforce conservative agendas.
Progressives must pay attention to local politics and midterm elections and ensure Democrats are voted in (mission accomplished in Nevada where we have early voting, voting from any poll station rather than only in your jurisdiction, etc!).
We are in a “government by corporation” society now. Corporations have achieved extreme wealth and, by way of Republicans, have been given the rights of human beings and citizens. Corporations govern our lives. Corporations have improved lives by providing pharmaceuticals, computer technology, telecommunications. Their innovations, however, have been made possible, through developments made possible through public resources: computer science, medical research, satellites.
The wealthier corporations get, the more power they have to avoid regulations and to pass the cost of doing business onto consumers. It’s called the “externalization of costs” - an example being waste clean up. Pollution dumped into water sources from fracking are cleaned up by the government; global warming caused by a chemical release from companies is paid for by consumers who pay higher insurance premiums in areas now frequently hit by disasters, for example.
Will the government by corporation afford us the greatest life, liberty, happiness?
A nurturant morality views ethical behavior centered on empathy and responsibility (for yourself and others needing your help). Many things follow from this: fairness, minimal violence (for example, justice without vengeance). Conservatives follow a policy of self-interest, using strict father morality as the guide, such as when Bush went ahead with the Gulf War, where a million civilians died of the affects of our war against them and the embargos - we destroyed water treatment plants, hospitals, etc.
The second Bush led the war in Iraq, which was supposed to cost $40 billion dollars; it cost us $3 trillion so far and counting, if you consider the cost of veterans getting injured. This war was paid for through, at the time, our social security surplus.
Money spent on war drains public resources at home.

Planned Parenthood
In 1916 the first birth control clinic in the U.S. was opened by Margaret Sanger. Sanger founded the American Birth Control League in 1921 which later changed its name to Planned Parenthood in 1942. Planned Parenthood was founded on the idea that women should have the information and care they need to live strong, healthy lives and fulfill their dreams. Planned Parenthood has received federal funding since 1970. At this time, President Richard Nixon signed the Family Planning Services and Population Research Act into law. This provides funding for family planning services, including contraception and family planning information. The law was supported by both Democrats and Republicans. According to Nixon, the funding is based on the idea that "no American woman should be denied access to family planning assistance because of her economic condition".
Today, Planned Parenthood is a widely-known, nonprofit organization that provides sexual and reproductive health care and education to millions of people worldwide. As professional healthcare providers, we are dedicated to offering safe, reliable, and affordable healthcare to those who need it. We have 650 affiliate health centers across the nation, including standalone clinics and satellite offices. We are partnered with organizations in 12 countries globally. Some of our services include sex education, pregnancy prevention and birth control, vasectomies, abortion, female sterilization procedures, pregnancy tests, prenatal care, STD screening and treatment, pap smears, and breast exams. However, different centers offer varied services. 2.5 million women and men in the US visit our centers each year.
The majority (around 80%) of our services are preventative. We help prevent unintended pregnancies through contraception, reduce the spread of sexually transmitted infections through testing and treatment, and screen for cervical and other cancers.
In addition to health care, we teach comprehensive sex education with the intention to encourage people to make informed choices and lead healthy lives. We offer both on campus and online courses to provide young people with honest information about sexuality and relationships. One of our goals is to help reduce our nation’s alarmingly high rates of unintended teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. We provide educational programs and outreach to 1.5 million people every year.
Throughout our history, we have experienced both support and protest. National and local pro-life groups have made efforts to stop federal and state government funding. As a result, federal and state legislators have proposed legislation to reduce funding levels. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, New Hampshire, Ohio, and Utah‍ have enacted these proposals. In some states, Planned Parenthood was completely or partially defunded.
As an organization, we strongly advocate for the people’s access to comprehensive education and health care. We are dedicated to fighting for the protection and expansion of reproductive rights.  Many individuals around the world, don't have access to vital reproductive and sexual health care and information due to poverty, politics, and war. Planned Parenthood works with local partners in Africa and Latin America to overcome these barriers by increasing access to health care and education. We fight for legal, social, and political improvements in communities around the world.
