I know I can sometimes be a petty little hater, but the truth is I'm not that bothered by people rebooting and remixing stuff - sure it's often done as a cash grab and is rarely an improvement on the original, but whatever, not everything is for everybody, I'll be salty about it for a week and move on.

BUT! But. What gets me every time is when the new creators openly talk shit about the original creators and the IP (*caugh* Ninja Theory and Crystal Dynamics *cough*). Listen, you wouldn't even be here if the original IP didn't exist, and you're being allowed to remake it because at least something about it was good. Show the slightest amount of humility, or - if you can't even manage that - at least be professional about people who are basically your colleagues.

I just can't stand this, and I take it as my personal duty to be forever petty about it lol. (And usually that's not hard, because so far I've never seen this attitude result in a better product.)

I watched Devil May Cry season 1 on Netflix...

...so here are my two cents 🪙🪙

THE CHARACTERS

I am glad to say they did our boy justice: Dante is as cool and lovable as ever. He's still a baby devil here and has a lot to learn, but as the series is apparently supposed to have 5 seasons, this makes sense. Lady, on the other hand, is a mixed bag. She does get a lot of screen time, but a big chunk of that is spent being Very Edgy™ and swearing like a tween who just discovered there are bad words, to the point she's can get annoying at times. Again, since there are several seasons planned I hope she can go back to being her original self, but the writers definitely didn't do the best job of balancing out her abrasiveness with her (hidden) vulnerability.

Bonus points for The White Rabbit and Enzo.

THE STORY

The story is going to be the sticking point for most people, as it's really a break from what we've seen before. The main story beats are there, but they take place in the context of Bush's America🇺🇸 and that is something I have never really needed in DMC. That said, the story is not bad at all, it just has to do more with the world DMC The PS2 DVD came out in than any themes DMC The Video Game focuses on. Personally, I would have preferred a more subtle story dealing with religion and the nature of good and evil, but you can get a meal you didn't order and still enjoy it. I will say the satire of 00s U.S. government is somehow both absurd and accurate.

THE SETTING

For me this one is a big downgrade, since setting the story in New York makes the backdrops feel very generic-big-city. There are also SF elements that feel kind of out of place in DMC. Overall, the gothic vibes and architecture are gone - maybe it will change as the story progresses but so far it's pretty meh.

THE ANIMATION

This one is a huuuge plus, with the fights being very creative, cool, and fluid. 10/10 no notes, Style Ranking: S

CONCLUSION...

For me DMC 1/3/Manga/'07 Anime will probably always be peak Devil May Cry, but I also feel this franchise had massively lost steam in parts 4 and 5, and that Capcom is not really sure what to do with the story at all (I won't even bother mentioning the awful reboot). So in that respect, I am very open to giving Netflix's newest take a try! Yes, it deviates from some things that made the original unique (like the setting), but it's still recognizable enough to be enjoyable. For now I look forward to future seasons 👍

Omg these two have been making me weak for the last 20 years. Listen! Lady is actually not very lady-like: she's abrasive and guarded. She's not motherly or flirty or a vamp. But she's driven, sincere, and determined. She fights for what she believes is right. And despite his childish antics Dante deeply respects that.

Acknowledging that “critical thinking” means “thinking about things in a thorough way from different perspectives” and not “finding every flaw in a thing and fixating on it until all the joy is gone” is so liberating.

Sad to say I've had to cancel my Tumblr subscription because the price hike was just too much (44 to 80 euros). I loved supporting the site (and not seeing damn ads), and I know the sub was probably going to increase anyway, but hiking the price by almost double is just insane.

I know we're all riding the wave of Tomb Raider nostalgia, but I will NOT allow Chase Carver to be rehabilitated. He's a disgusting loser with the personality of a herpes sore, and even dying a gruesome death was still too good for him.

If you haven't read the comic (which is not that horrible, except for the Great Unpleasantness that is Carver), Chase gambles away Lara's money and then cheats on her but Lara still can't get over him, probably because holding her breath for several minutes during all those water puzzles has finally resulted in irreversible brain damage.

Kurtis and AoD Lara would never.

Posting a little thread from bluesky 😁 ngl teenage me was not excited about some dude being playable in AoD thinking they'd just make him a self-insert for dudes who wanted to see Lara taken down a peg (shout out to Chase Carver, may he rest in pieces ✌️), but when I (finally) progressed through the game I was very pleasently surprised! Glad to see Kurtis finally get the praise he deserves ❤️‍🔥
