Planning for Whumptober right now…
Day 12 is giving All Star Batman and Robin vibes. But also, if I start writing fanfiction for that cursed universe I’m gonna go insane.

My ramble on Frank Miller's All Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder, aka ASBAR! I attempt to take it seriously on its own terms and figure out what it was going for, with digressions about giallo, Susie Bright, and a hypothetical Nightwing-focused season of Batman Beyond!

Weird Little DC Comics Confession:
Alrighty
I think we can call agree to disagree but imho All Star Batman and Robin written by Frank Miller was just not very good
However I think we can all agree that it’s artwork by Jim Lee is some of the most well drawn and beautiful artwork for a comic book series we had all ever seen
With that in mind, I raise all you this…..
Imho The Way Dick Grayson (Age 12) in particular was drawn in those Pajamas Alfred had given him and wore for a good chunk of the Book, he looked so precious in them
I mean…Look at Him
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s a weird thing to confess I know and I freely admit it, but I’ll say this
Since some of the recent comics had adapted the Flying Graysons’ green performing outfits with a Big Yellow G on them which came from this comic for flashbacks to Dick’s childhood, I don’t see why we can’t adapt this comfy sleepwear for him to wear in some said flashbacks as well

Could you talk more about your Hal reverse kidnapping Dick fic idea? What would he be like as a father figure/mentor? I'm intrigued!
Tumblr media
Hi sorry for not answering this for a month
okay so the thing is Hal, as a character isn't well suited much for being a primary parent figure, he's a great uncle figure! But he's the uncle, he's not the parent but also he knows he can't leave Dick with asbar Batman, that's not an option. Like the kid was kidnapped and tried to kill someone, Batman's a murderer in this verse (or at least he drove his armored car over people while laughing so like yeah). I feel like the first few days or so are good. Hal can feed someone else for three days, he has that much in his bank account. Then, the Guardians call him into a mission because he's their favorite and thus they mess with his life the most 😔
so what does Hal do? Drop Dick off at Oa with Kilowog who has (had? at this point, not sure of the timeline of the explosion vs being a green lantern) children he has loved thus he can take care of a human for a few days, right?? (Hal is right, and Kilowog is not mad at him only because Dick is a cute kid and he does love children). Then of course, other lanterns hear about the kid that the earth lantern brought to Oa and they simply must meet the kid. I feel like Dick and Tomar-Re would probably get along? oooh what about Katma, purely for my Katma should be in all the things agenda. Hmmm, I'll have to think about that one.
Anyway somehow when Hal gets back to Oa to pick up Dick, Dick is now the Lanterns kid now. Sorry, not sorry, you left him behind you have to face the consequences (at least 100 of your closest friends/coworkers/family deciding he's our kid now and they have many opinions). The Guardians allow it because the Old Timer in particular likes Dick. The Guardian who was once and will be named Ganthet kinda likes him too but also Ganthet is weird. He is not a wise, old man he is a weird old man. Dick has many parent type figures and two Grandpa figures now (because once again Hal has been canonically referred to as like the Guardians' favorite son, relationship of all time) and Hal is very ???. He was not expecting this when leaving Dick with Kilowog for a few days.
Dick still goes back to Coast with Hal -and that was sure a conversation with Carol and Tom, Hal will tell you- and both of them try to grow. Hal, with a kid he's in charge of, is a bit more grounded than he is in canon-he can't go wandering when Carol gets engaged to someone else for example- while Dick doesn't become a vigilante, or at least stay one. Keeping him away from Bruce is hard, but when needed Hal and Dick will just go to space for a while so its not overwhelming hard to stay away. Plus Hal uses the old power ring duplicate trick to make sure that Robin and Dick are seen in the same place.
As for your actual question, I think Hal is more like a friend than a father figure? Like he's in charge, yes, but Dick doesn't need another father figure or mentor at this point. It changes over time -I imagine that Hal gives Dick the coat for his 18 birthday- but that's a long time coming, with some bumps in the road. They have to learn to work together and grow, and make changes.
Also this is far down the road, but thinking about Emerald Twilight. Dick wasn't there. He survives. He's in New York maybe, having moved there with Donna and Roy when he turned 18, but still, does Hal know that? I'm not sure if having a kid would change what happened, but Coast City is gone. That's permanent in all the timelines. I'm not sure if this entirely answered your question, please ask more if you want to, but there's some of my thoughts on this.

wfa #77 vs detective comics (1937) #241
theoretically, i know that the yellow batsuit is a reference to tec #241 where bruce switched up his costumes to make sure he was the centre of attention, and not robin
however
i have to be honest: the moment i saw that brightass yellow
all i could think was
oh my god
that's the suit that nearly killed hal jordan

all star batman and robin (2005) #9

Sometimes I have just read too many comics to be able to enjoy fanfic.
Silly fluff with 'Bruce was so mean to young Tim Robin, he celebrated everyone else's first solo patrols and then made Tim eat rats in the basement to stop him wanting to be Robin' as a premise: Poor Tim!
Me: actually you'll find the only person ever threatened with eating rats in the basement is Dick in ASBAR and do we really want to acknowledge ASBAR's existence? Also after Tim's first solo patrol Henri Ducard made sure he got on the right plane home from Hong Kong to Gotham and on his first solo patrol in Gotham he captured the Joker on his own and Alfred picked him up in the van as Bruce was in Rio for work.

Okay this is a bad take but I'm reading All Star Batman and Robin and I can't shake the thought that it looks like something 10-years old Damian Wayne would make. Everyone being obsessed with Batman. Batman being 'COOL' and 'BADASS' (in absolutely 'cool for preteen' way), and doing wierdest, most bizzare things. Wierd 'training' of Dick who is left alone to eat rats, what sounds like such a League of Assasins thing to do. Alfred being SHREDDED (effect of basing how old people look based on Ra's al Ghul). Justice League being a bunch of squabbling wierdos. I attribute rampant sexualization of women to the effect of a kid trying to write 'adult' comic.
The cherry on top is imagining Damian finding his horribly bad comic every once in a while and being painfully reminded of his 10-year old self being cringe idiot, but being unable to force himself to throw it away because of the actually good art.
BUT the absolute banger is imagining his siblings FINDING his comics and REAIDNG them. Aloud. Doing voices and recreations of their favourite scenes. Jason almost dying a second time, from laughing during his stellar """I'M A GODDAMN BATMAN""" . Tim going "why. why would you write something like that" every three lines, visibly pained. Everyone calling Dick, "Dick Grayson, age X" when talking to him for the next few years.

Just remembering and musing on the idea that what comics/graphic novels you read and when you read them in addition to your own life experience you bring into those stories with you, is absolutely going to color the perception you have and what lenses you see those stories through...
