As someone who works w animals “animals are not mindless automatons, they actually do have feelings and individuality and are capable of feeling acute physical and emotional pain and of forming deep attachments with other animals and people” and “animals are not human infants and have a limited capacity to communicate with humans so you have to familiarize yourself with their boundaries bc if they feel threatened or overstimulated they will fall back on their basic instincts and if you fuck around you are going to find out” are statements that can and should coexist

anthropomorphizing animals is cool when people draw frogs in hats fishing and living in a cute little house. Not so cool when people say zoos shouldn't exist because they don't understand that animals aren't people

hey what's your beef with peta? if it's that they operate "kill shelters" you might want to read the newsweek fact check https://www.newsweek.com/fact-check-peta-responsible-deaths-thousands-animals-1565532 (tldr: "Just as a hospice has a high mortality rate, so does a shelter that takes in those near end-of-life, feral, aggressive, dying and discarded animals." "Cherry-picking animals to only allow in the most adoptable at shelters with limited admission (otherwise known as 'no-kill') policies doesn't help and often leads to people dumping animals, or neglecting them in other ways,")
Oh no it's so much more than that.Constant spreading of pseudoscience and misinformation, ableist campaigns (such as "drinking milk causes autism", racist and antisemitic campaigns (comparing pig farming to the Holocaust for instance), sexist campaigns under the guise of feminism (veganism is feminist because cows have a womb they are women too) more misinformation and pseudoscience, financial scams, at least one instance of abducting someone's beloved and cared for pet to euthanize it, harassment, using emotional manipulation on children ("your mommy is a murderer because she eats meat" etc), harassing and breaking into zoos and research labs , frequently killing the wild animals they rescue, that one bullshit monkey photograph lawsuit, being against ALL animal agriculture and hunting EVERYWHERE, being opposed to pets (yes cats and dogs too), actually paying people to abuse farm animals for staged videos, cultish behavior, absolutely insane ideas, and oh, misinformation and pseudoscience.
As to kill shelters, it's the lies and the hypocrisy that bothers me, because these are the same fucking people who will insist they're doing good by keeping animals alive when they have no quality of life to speak of anymore. One moment they're gushing over some poor piglet born without trotters or blind legless bird being kept alive and miserable for months, the next they're all pro euthanizing healthy animals en masse, all while they collect donations for both.
I know a lot of people donate to them in good faith but don't. Even if you are vegan. They're not doing anything good with that money.

Urge These Resorts to Stop Offering Cruel Dolphin Experiences! | PETA
Hawks Cay Resort in Florida and The Kahala Hotel & Resort and Hilton Waikoloa Village in Hawaii are supporting the abuse of intelligent dolphins by partnering with notorious Dolphin Quest or Dolphin Connection. These companies cruelly confine dolphins to tiny lagoons so they can offer tourists “swim with dolphins” experiences for profit.

Every once in a while I will see a post claiming vegans kill more animals then people who eat meat because of the rodents and birds killed harvesting crops and it always makes me laugh.
If you don’t want to be vegan then don’t be vegan but if you’re going to be a troll, at least use your brain.
You also eat fruit, vegetables, nuts, legumes and grains. (Not just vegans.)
You know who else also eats those? Livestock.
Almost 80% of the world’s soybean crops are fed to livestock. A quick google search will prove this to you.

Massive gripe ive been having with primarily the therian community lately, I really dont feel like we focus enough on animal rights causes considering how "connected" we're supposed to be to nonhumans.
Like I see it around for sure, but when I do it usually isn't more than just "hunting for sport is bad👍" or "dont beat your dog 👍" and that's it. The main focus of the community is still very much on biologically human individuals rather than on bio nonhumans, who are very literally treated like garbage in society and it's frustrating because i feel like we should be right there on the front lines when it comes to animal liberation.
Im not saying all of us need to be members of ALF or anything, im not even vegan and have no plans to be, but as of rn the community's overall acknowledgment and support of animal rights causes is pretty pathetic. Hell, I still hear therians confidently and proudly infantilize adult/highly intelligent nonhuman species ("animals have the intelligence of human toddlers") and spread blatant misinformation about them. Shit just annoys me

I think some of you are so far down ARA or anti-ARA pipelines that you stop seeing nuance in a lot of animal welfare issues.
A lot of sanctuaries and organizations like peta will falsify stories of animal abuse and some do abuse and kill more animals than they do right by.
A lot of animal abuse and neglect due to ignorance or apathy (towards non-traditional pets especially) happens in the world.
These are both true statements. You don’t have to try to justify peta to prove you’re an ARA and you don’t have to justify the US commercial poultry industry to prove you aren’t an ARA.
Please think critically and independently on these issues, I beg.

how would you respond to "I also think suffering is horrendous but as I said, I don't think veganism helps about that. In fact vegans usually oppose things like hunting and population control that don't make any sense from a welfare perspective, and for many things I consider veganism a burden in the way of welfarism"?
Well the idea that hunting reducing suffering is frankly laughable, but even ignoring that, this argument works only in the most no-nuance sense of reducing suffering. Walking into a hospital and just euthanising anyone experiencing any kind of pain would be reducing suffering in this same sense, and anyone opposing that action would be “getting in the way of welfarism.”
The big issue with that is that these animals only exist to suffer in the first place because they are bred specifically for profit. We’re talking about cheeseburgers and bacon here, any suffering to produce these items is wholly unnecessary. They want to talk about welfare, but their position is essentially that we should reduce suffering while continuing to breed and kill animals, ours is that we should end that same suffering by not breeding or killing those animals at all. Which of these actions results in less suffering?
The same is true of overpopulated species. They’re overpopulated because we killed all of their natural predators and took away their habitat to graze farmed animals. So which action reduces suffering more significantly - killing the overpopulated deer over and over every time they overpopulate, or reducing population through fertility control? Or better yet, solving the problem permanently through rewinding and the reintroduction of natural predators?
It is also important to remember that animal suffering is not the primary issue for vegans; animal rights are. This is why we most of us are abolitionists, rather than welfarists. If you take away someone’s right to life, liberty and bodily autonomy, but you don’t cause them any physical pain, is that suddenly okay? All the opportunity cost and the harm caused by the life and opportunities for joy that are denied is fine, so long as they aren’t experiencing physical pain?
Veganism “gets in the way of welfarism” only in the sense that we are not trying to make animal exploitation and slaughter slightly less horrific, we are trying to abolish it completely. They want to paint themselves as welfarists, but no one who is paying for an animal to be shot in the head, electrocuted, gassed or have their throat slit can be said to be in support of that animal’s welfare.

Look at that cat, shaking his legs due to fear of all the bombs. Cannot walk anymore. Animals cannot hide their feelings. Imagine what Palestinians feels inside. Babies, children, mentally handicapped or handicapped people in general like blind and deaf people, elderly.
Where are you vegans and animal rights activist who supports israel?Perhaps the animals from Palestine are lower than animals in your country. Make some excuses. But, it's not my business.
That cat like others in palestine is traumatized for life.
That cat is lucky. He cannot hunt anymore since his limbs are paralyzed. Other animals like him will starve to death if they are not taken care of by humans. Thanks Israel and America

Can’t be vegan? Go vegetarian.
Can’t be vegetarian? Do meatless Mondays.
Trying your hardest (whatever that may be) to help animals and the environment is far better than sitting on the sidelines and watching it burn.
